THE LARGEST MUSIC, ART & ENTERTAINMENT MAGAZINE IN THE RGV!

A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER TIME FLIES WHEN YOU ARE HAVING FUN! That’s the cliché, and its so true. Not too long ago I was a wee little Ramsey with a wee little idea.

PUBLISHER RAMSEY RAMIREZ GRAPHICS FRANK X. SALINAS CONTRIBUTING WRITERS RAMSEY RAMIREZ JOHN CAIN DARTH CHEW

My last boss told me there was no money in Local Music and stopped letting me cover local bands in his mag. Eventually I left. But there was plenty of bands that I thought deserved some coverage. I met a guy named Russel. We started something cool. A mag called WEIRD MAGAZINE & had a radio show called WEIRD RADIO. I brought the ROCK, ART & MUSIC, He brought the PARANORMAL & CONSPIRACIES.

COVER PHOTOS BY: HELLYEAH: DAVID LINDSEY WADE

THE WEIRDNESS WAS TOO MUCH FOR ME. The alternative media and all the conspiracy stuff was making me paranoid and crazy. I decided it was best to follow my original plan and start my own mag devoted to local music, and MAGAZINE X was born in AUGUST of 2005 and printed September of that year.

Before I knew what happened, the big dogs caught wing of what we had built here and came calling. The Record Labels & PR dudes started offering me bigger & bigger interviews. DEFTONES, FILTER, DOWN, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, AS I LAY DYING, BOBBY V, DEADMAUS and more. Was my ex-boss right? Probably. But I found a way to make it work. Yes, we bring you this magazine every month. Free! But it is the local business’ that keep it going. I’m very grateful to all my advertisers. Especially those that have been with me since the beginning, Shenanigans, Skunky’s, Copz Lounge, RGV Video, as well as the newer ones like MUSICADEMY, Hippies Smoke Shop, Studio 54 They have seen the benefit of supporting this mag and all the local and national talent that grace it’s pages.

Disney has for years brought us movies to entertain us. Be it a lion being born completing the circle of life. Or a little mermaid wanting to gain the ability to walk on land and fall in love. Or even two kids trying to make it to a mountain so they can go back home in their spaceship. Disney has for years brought us different types of movies to love and enjoy. Which brings me to this review of a film that I myself enjoyed but for some it didn’t. Even Disney has had a miss from time to time but I don’t believe this time it’s a miss. Might not be a massive hit but it wasn’t a flop. The movie I speak of is The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. This story has been told by Disney several times before twice in an animated perspective with the 1940 film Fantasia and again it was told in the 2000 sequel Fantasia 2000. Now ten years later the same premise of the story would be told in live action. The Plot is patterned behind the usual stories of Good vs. Evil and the triumph of good overpowering the evil villain. I’ll say that in my opinion this concept was done very well and as well the cast chosen for this film.

Nic Cage will return as Ghost Rider with Crank team Neveldine and Taylor behind the director’s seat.

The main villain’s role of Maxim Horvath belongs to Alfred Molina a season veteran actor of both stage and screen. Maxim Horvath was a friend of Balthazar and he of course fell to temptation’s darker side of power through the corruption of another magic user who is named Morgana Le Fay who is played by Alice Krige. Who is known for her role as the Borg

Queen from Star Trek’s First Contact. Yes, that Morgana who in turn is the reason this whole mess starts to begin with. Now if you want to know how Morgana and the other magic users play their parts I say watch the film I do recommend it. Now, the hero’s part was played by two actors one is the accomplished actor Nicolas Cage who played the part of Balthazar Blake and the second hero is played by Jay Baruchel who is known for playing his namesake in the film Knocked UP. Plays the part of Dave Sutler the one who is destined to follow in the Merlin’s footsteps. Yes, I did say “Merlin’s footsteps” and didn’t you see that one coming? I know I gave that bit away by mentioning Morgana Le Fay’s name. And, that’s all I am going to tell you and if you want more, then I am afraid you will have to go and see the movie. And, I will not be giving out spoilers I believe I’ve given enough. Now, don’t look at me like that. All I’ve given you was two names the rest you can deduce on your own and, believe me all magic movies are based around the concept of good vs. evil. And, after you see this film you can decide if you like it or not but I believe if you are all a fan of fantasy and magic I’m sure you’ll all like this film. Now, I will say this that for some people this movie won’t entertain you or appease you. This film does not have aliens, well it does have a large Chinese dragon but that’s not alien now is it…oops sorry bout that almost gave something else away didn’t I? Where was I? Oh, yes…or large

amounts of explosions or gunfire. What it has is a lot of special effects and allows you to watch a world like ours be manipulated by the power of thought and magic. And, for some of us it was done right and for some others it was not. Probably could be that were expecting something totally different but the entire main points were there. Plot, character design, good costuming, expensive cars hehehe I have a friend who values movies based on the cars they use so even that will satisfy him. And, good triumphs over evil what else is there? Well, maybe more dragons but I’ll say that even the acting was decent I mean it isn’t academy award winning but was still decent. I myself have come to the conclusion that a lot of people out there have nothing else better to do than to bash a movie just because they feel it’s not up to their expectations. I believe that this movie is good enough to watch and enjoy. So I say go out there watch and enjoy and make up your own opinions. And, allow the magic of the screen take you to somewhere far away and fill your senses with wonder and dreams and if it’s only for a short time enjoy it for that time. Since movies are actually only there to transport us away from our usual bland worlds to places only reachable in dream and thoughts. This is Darth Chew leaving you with these words. Magic is something that we all have and can use; it’s within our minds called thought and imagination. Now, go watch a movie or something I know I am.

Whats up guys? Are you guys ready for the MAGX JAM 5 @ smoking aces on August 12th? NORMAN MATTHEW: Sooo ready man,it's been a while since i've been to the dirty south ;) every show we have done in mc allen is always fun! the night before the KORN tour we were in McAllen and i believe last time we can through was with BURN HALO. I'm particularly excited because the last run we did was with our boys in THE DREAMING ( x Stabbing Westward) back in March and have been in the studio since.

Request on SCUZZ TV in Europe,we were charting higher than NICKELBACK and 30 SECONDS TO MARS, we peaked at #2 and it was such a high man..Whats even weirded is we don't know how it happened. We had no press campaign or strategy in place,it literally ran on the steam of the Fans man! That is an amazing testament to the power of the song. The producer director at SCUZZ TV ran the video and it just grew wings and flew.a great achievement for a band coming out the gate, i personally thank the fans, its cliche to say,but they really DID make it happen. Thank You a million times over.

What's been going on in the last year since we've seen you?

And you are going on a european tour later this month? With who?

NORMAN MATTHEW: Since we last saw you,we did a headlining run, then hit the road with I AM GHOST,THE BECOMING,MODERN DAY ESCAPE and THE DREAMING. I recently moved from El Paso to Dallas,Tx with my fiance and have a gnarly new studio in Dallas,TX so J6,Matt and I have been hitting it hard, but after 5 months of being off from playing live consistently for over a year half supporting our Glasstone/Century Media Release "ANTHEMS FOR

NORMAN MATTHEW: Yes,after the run with OTEP & THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE we will be heading over to Europe, hitting GERMANY,NETHERLANDS,FRANCE and UNITED KINGDOM with JULIEN-K (members of Orgy,Dead By Sunrise) and MY PASSION from the UK

THE USED" I'm ready to get back out there and start playing the new stuff and seeing how people react to it. Our next release "PATCHWORK PROMISES" is coming out in mid August and the first single "CATCH" is already out the gate and about to get hit iTunes. "PATCHWORK PROMISES" will be a Limited Edition Pressing, so make sure to get a copy at the show!

man. I came into the music dream when i was 4 and saw KISS, i didnt know about Sex,Drugs,Rock And Roll, i just knew the cause, not everything that came along with it. As far as the "Rockstar" stigma, things have changed man, the business and model has changed. The musician that is out there today is true warrior fighting a flailing economy,

I heard you have one of the top videos in the UK? Tell me how that happened.

NORMAN MATTHEW: Yes man, such a trip! "AS BEAUTIFUL AS YOU ARE" was a TOP

changing buyers habits, piracy at its zenith. performing at low paying venues with high operational costs as a band,so my hats off to ANY and ALL musicians out there, we all deserve the same respect and success, regardless of the level you are at. Its all about the cause, not the payoff.

What tours have you been on this year? NORMAN MATTHEW: We did the I AM GHOST,THE BECOMING,MODERN DAY ESCAPE Tour at the beginning of the year, did a run with THE DREAMING with a few headlining shows dialed in here and there and have spent most of 2010 in the studio kicking out the new record.

What is it like opening up for these big bands? NORMAN MATTHEW: Its amazing! THE USED were great to us! They were our first live show man, what a way to kick it all off! KORN,for being as iconic as they are were truly down to earth. Munky even stood on the side of the stage and watched us and the drummer from DROWNING POOL kept running out onstage to fix the messed up drum mics at one point, while CJ from DROWNING POOL would hangout in the dressing with us learning our riffs, soo dope! Speaking of DOPE, opening for DOPE was rad too! Angel, the drummer for DOPE has a side project called TEAM CYBERGEIST that fea-

Most of you have heard of the band HELLYEAH. For those that haven't, HELLYEAH is a supergroup composed of TEXAS BORN ex-PANTERA & Damage Plan super drummer VINNE PAUL ABBOT, Mudvayne vocalist Chad Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett, Nothingface guitarist Tom Maxwell, Damageplan bassist Bob Zilla. After alot of begging and a couple of obligatory reach-arounds, we were able get the PR guys to give us 10 minutes on the phone with the one and only Vinnie Paul! Vinnie is a heavy metal drummer and producer who is currently a member of supergroup Hellyeah, but is best known for being a member, and co-founder, of the heavy metal band Pantera. He also co-founded the heavy metal band Damageplan in 2003 with his late younger brother, Dimebag Darrell. Out of respect for Vinnie and Dime, we kept the questions relating to HELLYEAH and their new album. MAGX was exctatic to get the chance to interview this living legend. Oh, and we were just kidding about the reach-arounds. (Or are we???)

Hey Vinnie! First I gotta say we are big fans here in South Texas! Vinnie: Thank You! What's Up McAllen!

So you guys got a new album called STAMPEDE. What was the feel going into this one? Vinnie: The feel was to make a better record. We had a lot more confidence, we knew who were were and I think it really shows in the new music.

Where is this tour taking you? Vinnie: All over the US. Closer to you guys would

be THE UPROAR TOUR, Dallas September 10th, Corpus Christi September 11th, and Houston on September 12th. Then it's off to Canada, Australia & Japan!

What are your shows like in Europe?

Vinnie: Different cultures but the energy is the same. They love the music. Music is the universal language.

What is the most memorable show you have played?

Vinnie: '92, monsters of rock! There was a sea of people. It was amazing.

Do you have any pre-show rituals: Vinnie: A couple vodka shots, put on some slayer or judas preist to get ready. Then you walk out and hear the roar of the crowd. It's an unbelievable feeling.

What is your favorite food? Vinnie: Fajitas!

I signed a leg! The guy took off his leg off and handed it too me. It stunk like hell but he was happy as shit. I signed it for him, he popped it back on and hopped on down the road.

What do you do on your down time?

Are they hard to find overseas? Vinnie: Yes, they are kinda hard to get. When you are over seas. There are very few mexican restaurants in europe and germany but the few they do have are damn good!

What feedback have you gotten on the new songs?

What’s the craziest thing you've seen or done at a show?

Fishing. I recently bought a home in las vegas too. I love it there. There is always something going on. I love to gamble.

Do you win or lose? Eh, about 50/50. I also love to go to all the shows. Tosh is awesome and funny. I love all the Cirque de Sole shows, and check out my boys, The Sin City Sinners whenever I can.

So far the fans love the new

When was the last time you were star struck? That kind of wore off many years ago but i met definitley when I met Rob Halford at night club back in PANTERA days. He brought us on the PAIN KILLER tour. Of course when I met Ozzy & the Van Halen Bros. It's always special meeting my heroes. Sammy Hagar is one of my best friends, I love him.

Do you guys have any unreleased tracks? No. Some bands write 20 songs and hope they get 10 decent ones. Our philosophy is "Why not write 10 great songs and not waste time."

What is it like being part of HELLYEAH? We are a family. We treat each

Favorite Video Game? Madden! Go Cowboys! Favorite Movie? Yippie ki yay mother fucker. Diehard! My favorite action star. I think Bruce Willis is awesome!

O.K. Thanks Vinnie. Best of luck with your tour & your new album. Hopefully you guys will be back here soon! We will! Tell everyone in the Valley thanks for all the support over the years. We'll be back down there very soon!

SEE GUILD LIVE @ SMOKIN’ ACES THURSDAY AUGUST 12th @ THE MAGX JAM 5. FREE ADMISSION.

MAGX loves to expose you to BAD ASS new music. GUILD is a killer Electronic Rock band from the future. Ok, thats a lie, they’re from L.A., but they sure sound like they’re from the future. Chok full of electro-rock goodness, these guys have played all over the famous venues and will be making a stop in the VALLEY for the MAGX JAM 5 year anniversary JAM! August 12th. Smokin’ Aces in McAllen. The MAGX JAM 5. BE THERE! It’s FREE!!! But read this interview with Kris Olmedo (Drums, Production, Composition) first! Tell me a little bit about the history and evolution of GUILD? GUILD has been around for ages, since the dawn of time, no seriously ... GUILD began in the mid 90's, mostly as experiments with technology, computer based sequencers like impulse tracker were the pirate hacker music scene which we were very much involved with and fascinated by. We have since then gone on to headlining industrial festivals, playing all around texas, headlining legendary stages from the Viper Room and Whisky A Go Go to name a few and have come a long way both musically and personally. We have earned all of our badges of honor, we are a tight knit family who enjoy playing music together and pushing our creative skills almost daily. We try to find new and exciting ways to make music and entertain our audience. What kind of music do you guys create? We create AWESOME music. HA! All of us listen to various music from electronic, dub-step, metal, punk, rock, pop, soul, folk, hip-hop, etc. We love all music and combine all that we love into what we do.

We aren't so pretentious to say that we DEFY CONVENTIONS but we do find it hard at times to describe ourselves. The easiest way to describe our style would be electronic - rock ....... from the future... For people that havent seen or heard you guys, what can they expect at the live show on August 12th @ Smokin' Aces for the MAGX 5YEAR ANNIVERSARY JAM? We not only bring our instruments to a show, we bring our stage production and programmed light show, it's as if a UFO had descended on stage. We also bring the heart, the heart of a band that is in this for the long run. We play music because it is not just a band, it is who we are. That may sound cheezy but there is no other way to describe it. We could play in front of a million people or ten people and would perform with the same passion and love it just the same. We play to entertain and enlighten and if you're life has been enriched by us then we have done our job right ... and we rarely fail at that task. When you are preparing for the

MAGX Anniversary Jam we recommend you bring sunglasses and a harness to make sure your jaw doesn't break when it hits the floor. WOW! Will the MAGX JAM be the first time you guys perform in The Rio Grande Valley? I actually grew up around that area but this will be the first time I have returned since then. We are beyond excited for this, we know Valley folk party and rock like no other and are looking forward to it. YES WE DO AND WE ARE! Where and with who have you played? I see Mankind Is Obsolete and Chant are myspace friends of yours. Both have played MAGX JAMS in the past. Have you played shows with them? We have played with Mankind is Obsolete and Chant. Chant and GUILD go back a long way and we are very good friends. We've played all over from Hollywood, Orange County, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Austin, San Antonio just to name a few. We've played with all sorts of talented acts like Romak and the Space Pirates, God Module, 16 Volt, Pitbull

Daycare, Vyncent Flaw, Emily's Gone Mad, Subnatural, Lucid Dementia, there are dozens more that I will feel bad for later not mentioning but so many I can't remember them all. I heard you were on the latest NINE INCH NAILS video. Tell me a little about that. We essentially hacked on to their last release. The band had not filmed their "Lights in the Sky" tour, so they commissioned their fans to submit all of their bootlegged video and it would be compiled together to make a DVD. With the affordability of HD cameras the video quality is amazing! you'd never know it was all fan filmed. We remixed "In This Twilight" from their Year Zero album and it is featured in some of the DVD features. We won't reveal how exactly we did it but, needless to say NINE INCH NAILS was infiltrated and we are truly privileged to be involved in a project by living legends. Lyrically, what influences you guys? "You guys?” Not "y'all"? I thought this was Texas? Just Kidding. LIFE, is the answer to that one. LIFE influ-

tures members of STONE SOUR,KITTIE,KMFDM and he asked me to sing on two tracks, such an honor. THE 69 EYES were great to us, CAVO and SICK PUPPIES, totally cool,BURN HALO were great, their singer James and I used to jam with Keith Barney and Trevor Friedrich in 18 VISIONS/ NEVER 3NOUGH. Its all been such a great ride man and now OTEP,THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE and Europe with JULIEN-K,i couldn't be more thankful.

I heard you guys have been in the studio…Is there a new CD coming out soon? Tell me a little about it. NORMAN MATTHEW: Yes, we are releaseing "PATCHWORK PROMISES" as a Limited Edition EP, it will be on iTunes til the end of time, but the CD version will have a limited pressing. We plan to release the full length by end of 2010,it just needs to be handled properly,we've worked really hard on the material and I won't let it fall to the wayside, rest assured ;) "PATCHWORK PROMISES" is amazing man,im VERY proud. Its HEAVY! much heavier than "ANTHEMS FOR THE USED",which was Raw and Gritty in and of itself, but with "PATCHWORK PROMISES" we kicked it up a notch,It's much darker and lyrical very deep. "CATCH","FAVORITE DRUG","GHOSTS" and "FALLS APART" blow my mind,i sit back and listen and can't believe that came out of me,haha! another cool thing like with "ANTHEMS FOR THE USED", i played drums on the record as well as my handling my singer/guitarist duties. It helps in the creative process MAGXONLINE.COM

because its all about j6,matt x3r0 and myself, we share the same vision and live for the cause, so we dont have to worry about hurting anyone's feelings in the writing/recording process, we just let it flow...and with "PATCHWORK PROMISES",it flowed. We have demoed over 25 songs!

“J6,” You're originally from Edinburg. Tell me how you wound up where you are, touring with an awesome band, opening up for some big names? J6: YEAH!! I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN BEAUTIFUL EDINBURG,TX. LIVED IN THE VALLEY TIL MY EARLY 20s WHERE I THEN MOVED TO SAN ANTONIO. I’VE BEEN IN THE MUSIC BIZ FOR

A SUPER LONG TIME IN SOUTH TX AND THE WEST COAST AREAS.BEEN FRIENDS WITH NORMAN MATTHEW FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS, AND HE HAD ASKED ME WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO COLLABORATE MUSIC WITH HIM FOR EITHER HIS PROJECT AT THE TIME(NEVER ENOUGH) OR TO START A NEW PROJECT. I TOLD HIM "GIVE ME A FULL ENDORSEMENT DEAL AND A WET KISS AND I'M ALL YOURS". LOL! SO I

PACKED UP MY WIFE AND OUR GEAR AND HEADED OUT TO EL PASO, TX. WHERE NORMAN OWNED A RECORDING STUDIO AND LIVED AT THE TIME. THAT'S HOW WE STARTED THIS RAD BAND MURDER FM... OF COURSE TOURING WITH A NEW PROJECT ACROSS THE U.S. WAS A HUGE STEP UP FOR ME AND A DREAM COME TRUE. OPENING/TOURING WITH THESE HUGE BANDS THAT I GREW UP LISTENING TO WAS

YOU. LOL! THERE IS NO REAL SECRET IN MAKING IT BIG. IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE BAND AND ITS DRIVE FOR SUCCESS. OPPORTUNITY DOESN'T JUST COME KNOCKING AT YOUR DOOR. YOU HAVE TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN. FINDING THE RIGHT BANDMATES THAT HAVE THE SAME DREAMS AND GOALS COULD LEAD TO GREAT SUCCESS. A BAND IS A MARRIAGE, FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE! LOL! BUT IT'S TRUE!

THE ICING ON THE CAKE. I CAN'T THANK GOD ENOUGH FOR HOW BLESSED WE ARE.

FOR ANY ADVICE I WOULD GIVE OUT FOR UPCOMING BANDS; 1ST LEARN THE MUSIC BUSINESS, 2ND, RULE YOUR INSTRUMENT, AND 3RD, FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS NO MATTER THE DIFFICULT OBSTACLES, CAUSE THIS WON'T HAPPEN OVER NIGHT. YEAH...LOVE YA !

“J6,” What advice do you have for the local bands here in South Texas who want to make it big? What is the secret? J6: THE SECRET IS DEEP WITHIN

What drives you guys? What is your overall goal with MURDER FM? MAGX •23

MURDER FM CONTINUED NORMAN MATTHEW: What drives me is creativity, release and expression. Of course its a given a musician wants sustain themselves financially by doing what you love and living the dream, so you dont really have to state that ya know? who wouldn't want to rock for a living? as for me though, if i can leave my mark/stain on the music world,i'll be happy, the rest are mere added extras and cool bonuses along the way

ences us, the culmination of everything we have gone through individually and as a group have shaped who we are. (3van.richards ) As the singer, I am influenced by the works of people like Hunter S. Thompson, Bob Dylan, Herman Hesse, Chuck Palahniuk, Ben Gibbard, Saul Williams, Thom Yorke to name a few. Songs also write themselves at times. On several occassions I have felt that a song was using ME as a tool to write lyrics to it and express what it wanted to say. And a song is like a child, you do all you can for it, raise it and nurture it the best you can but eventually you have to let it go and let it live on it's own. Eventually you get to sit back and look at your song, all grown up and pat yourself on the back and say proudly "that's my song". Musically? Wow the list goes everywhere... a veritable roller coaster ride of influences from Nine Inch Nails, Bob Dylan, Sleighbells, Goose, TV on the Radio, Radiohead, Prodigy, Skinny Puppy, Nirvana, Pantera, Die Antwoord, Saul Williams, Primus, Fever Ray, Sepultura, the Beatles, Beach Boys, you name it. This list could go on and on but in reality, we are influenced by music that is real, by real I mean true, honest, sincere which can range from happiness, anger, fear, sadness, love, hate, hope, etc. The best songs are the ones that speak to everyone no matter what genre. Songs that are trivial can be good, but the ones that are genuine live FOREVER!

I heard something about a special Acoustic set you guys are playing at KABOOM COMICS in McAllen before your big show at Smokin' Aces. Do you guys do many acoustic shows? NORMAN MATTHEW: You know it man! i'm excited about the word getting out on that! We have done many many in Store Performances at HOT TOPIC stores in Texas,New Mexico and Arizona,so something like this is right up our alley for sure! always good times

We're excited to have you guys back in the Valley for our 5th anniversary MAGX concert! Will we be hearing some of the new songs? NORMAN MATTHEW: Hell Ya you will be! From what I understand, we have a full set, which is great for us,because we can play stuff from both "ANTHEMS FOR THE USED" and "PATCHWORK PROMISES" the night before the OTEP / THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE Run,McAllen always seems to kick it off right for Murder FM and we thank You!Â

Nice quote! Where can people hear and see you online? We can be found on www.guildoffline.com www.myspace.com/guild www.twitter.com/guildtheband www.youtube.com/guildoffline www.reverbnation.com/guild and one can enlist in our Online Army a www.facebook.com/guildonlinearmy We look forward to melting faces on August 12th with our friends Murder FM and be sure to wear tight pants, because with all the awesome music you'll hear that night... you WILL have a boner. And if you're a girl wear tight pants anyways to make sure our claim is fulfilled. HA HA HA! Thank you MAGX, sya real soon. MAGX • 24
