Abstract Architecture , unlike other engineering fields is truly a practical field where learning is aprocess. During practicum, students gain immence insight regarding the real facets of architecture. This course help to train students in various fields such as technical, economical, practical and drawings, estimation and costing, in dealing with different professionals, engineer’s, clients. It basically prepares students and makes them familier with the office environment and trends. For my practicum I joined ONE LINE ARCHITECTS, Sathdobato, lalitpur for almost 6 months. This practicum report reflects my experience as trainee architect on various projects aiming to develop practical knowledge on the architectural field.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The site is in mixed old residential area. The land is in Contact with secondary road on southern face and tertiary road on the western face. The planning was done only sparing the setback in two roadside faces.
During first phase only façade design was assigned. Since building was planned with north and east side attached, only two façades was designed. The west side had only setback so only opening was placed. But on southern side due to unregular shape of the site, aside from setback the space of 4'3'' was left so, a balcony was projected.
DESIGN APPROACH According to the site, west and southern side has the access to the roads and with the set back of 5’, buildingis faced towards south and west. Mixed old residential zone of the site permitted the building to go upto 6 storey. Each floor consists of 3 studio appartments. The smallest one 131.34 sq. ft, and 195.47 sq.ft the biggest one in each floor. FLOOR PLANS Floor plans are simply made with 4 room with circulating and service spaces in middle and enough natural light. At first façade design for three and half storied was done. The floor area ratio was still left and since client later wanted to increase the no. of floors a new façade was made. CHANGES • Increment of room number and floor as far allowed 8 storied building • Interior layout
ABOUT SITE The site is located thamel area with area of 1155.07 sq .ft (0-3-1-2) with roughly rectangular in shape. South and west side of the site has access to the roads of 12’10” and 5’ simultaneously. The site is surrounded with the other new and old residential homes Architectural practicum report Eris Maharjan (073/BAE/216)

ELEVATION TREATMENT The souther elevation has two different types of treatment, one with 8’ window and brick treatment below the sill level in every floor starting from 1st floor. And the other window of size 7’2”. Whereas on the western side long vertical ribbon window on the middle stairs and 1’1” projected brick treatment with window opening of 7’2”.And other two elevations east and north is plan. ACHIEVEMENT • Exercise on plain façade • Play with projection and material used • Municipal drawing • Sanitary (soil and waste pipe layout) • Water supply (hot and cold water layout in plan) • Electrical layout
10

REQUIREMENT • Bathroom in each floor • Rooms for renting in ground and first floor.
3D OPTIONS OPTION 1 This option of 3D has no balconys. The windows here is of different size to give the plane facade intresting oppening. OPTION 2 Meanwhile in this option balconies appear and elevation treatment is made with only one material. conclusion, second option finalized.

Site from front road
approach of southern sunlight to the site
The first picture is taken from the main road of the site. The access of main road is towards west side of the site. The second picture is taken from the secondary road of east side of the site. the land here is slopy with the height difference of 15’ gradually increasing from west to east. According to the owner, the vacant land in the surrounding will have built building within few years so the southern light for the building will be absolutely less or in other words, approximately 5’ gap between two building is the space from where the southern light will be possible, as we can see in third picture. Architectural practicum report Eris Maharjan (073/BAE/216)
19
DESIGN APPROACH The site is longitudinal in shape so, in order to break that longevity different spaces were separated with blocks and were placed in alternative direction so that the light Receiving surface can increase. Due to slopy land the mass of lands are divided to different height and spaces thus formed is used to create different spaces in different height. The surface is gradully increasing in heights from front to back

Wall design
city sky line
nepali skyline
During the wall design, mostly the wooden planks are used. This particular design is from the reception area where the customer are welcomed. Since this restaurant is mainly targeted for tourist, in order to not feel the foreign environment for tourist upon arrival and to merge their world with our, the pattern representing the city skyline is drawn by planks surrounded by the bookshelf. Whereas the long wall opposite to the reception is covered with Nepalese temple skyline drawn by the help of wire concealed within the steel frame. The mass used to draw the city skyline (wooden plank) and Nepali skyline(wire) is too vast, it is made so to balance the presence. They are in our world, so a simple design is made with our skyline without compromising the importance of our culture.

Partition
long battens with cove light represents our traditional dhali system
The design of the ceiling represents our traditional dhali system. The material tused are also plank. Originally false ceiling was proposed but the floor height was too low for that (8'6") so in order to provide the essence of dhali, strip lights were used to show the depth In order to separate the space a semitransparent partition was designed which include naglo "hasa" in Newari as main body. It will be attached to the thread and will be hung upside down. In the middle of the those there will be the picture or portrait of the culture nanglo attachet through thread

CONCLUSION Overall, this internship was a useful experience. We have gained new knowledge, skills and met many new people. We achieved several of our learning goals. We got insight into professional practices advocated in current trend. We learned the different facet of working within a well-established industry. Related to our study we learned more about the design phases and actual construction procedure. Furthermore, we have experience that it is important that education is objective and that we must be aware of the industrial aspect of the topics we study. The internship program for me was not one sided, but it was a way of sharing knowledge, ideas and opinions. This internship was also good to find out what our strength and weakness are. This helped to define what skills and knowledge we must improve in the coming time. We can confidently assert that the knowledge we gained through this internship is sufficient to contribute toward our future endeavors. At last this internship has given us new insight to a motivation to pursue a career in core architectural department.
