Living Life What’s happening where?
It’s been a year since I picked up the reigns of this publication, and what a wonderful journey we’ve been on. I know it’s been a year because I remember wishing my mum, and everyone else’s, a happy Mother’s Day. This year, CC publisher Charlotte Smulders and I are introducing you to our mothers to tell you why they inspire us. Luckily for Charlotte, her family recently had their portraits taken, but when it came to organising Gilbert to head up the highway to take a picture of my mum – she was away on a South Island roadtrip with my father – celebrating 36 years of marriage! Thirty-six years! And she was busy texting me several times a day of all the wonderful sights they were seeing. So, I had to rifle through my albums to find a suitable pic. Since I wrote last month, I’ve attended the red-carpeted opening night of Jersey Boys in Auckland. Oh, what a night! If there’s one piece of advice I can give you this year – book some flights, hotel, and tickets, because this is a show you just can’t miss! Actually, neither is the Riverdance farewell tour which is here in early June. And I have some double passes to give away! Just email me before May 31st, and I’ll pop you in the draw. Chatting about shows reminds me that we’ve got a new column starting this month…one full of tattletales from around town. I’m terrible at gossip, so I’m leaving it to the experts. S
ome years ago my mother gave me a gorgeous candle. I have never wanted to light it because the message that it holds is rather beautiful. When Kineta and I decided to dedicate this column to our wonderful mothers I thought of my candle and the meaning of its message – it summarises the mother/ child bond that is so inspiring: “Daughter – a candle full of wishes to be your guiding light, keeps your heart so precious, holds your dreams so bright.” My mother could be my candle. Mother’s Day has so much more meaning for me now that I am a mother. Growing up it was all about breakfast in bed for mum and that was about it. Now that I have two girls of my own I like to think that I am much more reflective on this special day. Mothers are most definitely the glue of the family. I would hate to think how my two would cope without me around – for one they would look like orphan Annie. Mothers are completely selfless. This I did not appreciate till I have gone hungry numerous times, forgone ‘me time’, existed on sleep deprivation and have gone to a club med! And not to mention sleep-ins –

what are they? Children are the most rewarding experience and almost the most exhausting! I am so thankful and appreciative of the lessons my mother taught me (at the time I probably wasn’t so receptive). Mothers have a guiding light to them. How many times do I think back to the advice my mother gave me? Plenty! They are the hands that make us and mould us to what we become. My mother is still the first person I go to for everything – advice, help, gossip, you name it – she is always at the ready. I look back fondly on my upbringing. At my 21st I remember one of my speeches – apparently I was the product of both of my parents best points. I like to think I have inherited from my mother a sensitivity, a caring nature, wisdom, organisation (or is it bossiness), multi-tasking and great taste...and I love the fact that I can fit her shoes!! Do we become our mothers? If we do I couldn’t be more proud – my father and husband are probably inhaling deeply now thinking “oh my God!” And hopefully my girls will also treasure their candle! To all the mothers who read this – enjoy the 13th, I hope you get a sleep in and a delicious breakfast in bed!

A
t the age I am right now, my mother had four of us ratbags under the age of five. I haven’t a single one, and I just can’t imagine putting four little beings before myself, as she did. My question is – how on earth did she fit four children AND a husband into her life? I wonder if she ponders where her late twenties and thirties went; her forties and fifties. What a woman to devote so many decades to four, now adult, children! We’ve all turned out pretty well, so I’m sure she sits back happily knowing what a good job she and Dad did. I guess it’s not until now that I can look back, appreciate and respect the hard work and dedication she’s put into our lives. I love that I know she’s on the other end of phonecalls and texts when I need advice, reassurance, a recipe, or need to borrow something; I love the way she endures the gibberish the four of us kids speak to each other in, the garbage and jokes we all tell each other when we’re all together, and the tickle attacks on her when she has her back turned; and I
love that she opens up her already full garage to our wares every time we go overseas or move city. I love that she taught me compassion for humanity, and I reflect fondly to the days when we were little and she’d take us around resthomes to sing to the older people to brighten up their days, and mum would play the guitar. The most wonderful thing about her is, even though there’re four of us, she knows each of us inside and out. There’s no point having secrets from her because, as she says, ‘Mum always knows’, and she makes us laugh when she reminds us her favourite fashionista’s on TV, with a text message, “Gok’s on!” Though it’s hard for me to imagine her as anything other than being our full-time mother, she somehow also managed to be a nurse and a matron, among other things, all at the same time. What a woman! She’s my greatest fan, and most honest critic. She’s my wonderful mum. Happy Mother’s Day!

Who is the high-flying businessman with a penchant for gin and blondes? JON GADSBY

ello all. For those of you I don’t know, I am Tattie – a self-confessed nosey parker and for your sake you may hope that I never get to know you. With the Grey Ghost as my comrade in arms, we spend hours each week cruising streets learning of your unfortunate actions and indiscretions – in an effort to raise a smile when these are brought to print. We know that gossip is bad, and we will never out you. There will always be enough left unsaid to leave degrees of uncertainty around true identity. Any outing of identity will have been through self confession. Well, who is the prominent sportsman, of the oval ball variety, who has just announced to family and very close friends that he and his partner are expecting their second child? Which captain of industry prior to Christmas took delivery of a Segway moments before heading to a sake-enhanced lunch which was followed by a trip to a local law firm to demonstrate the internal manoeuvring capabilities of these amazing machines designed for the outdoors? Wide tires started to ride up the walls moments before the Segway landed on our captain. An ambo was called as a chauffeur later in the day and our man was forced to park his new toy up for the holidays, recognising that the difficulty of riding one of these while on crutches. The Ghost understands that there have been further demonstrations of the Segway’s acrobatic capabilities…

Oh, we see what he sees in the blondes, but what they see in him… Well, Tattie would need a few of those said gins… Who was the senior Christchurch pilot that was explaining to a dinner party audience that flying the new 777 aircraft was very easy? Pull the stick back and the houses get smaller, push it forward and the houses get bigger – an explanation indicating that flying is around the size of the house. When asked what happens when it is dark and you can’t see the houses, our esteemed pilot advised that darkness meant people were likely sleeping and that it was time for the pilots to have a little snooze too. Who is the well-known sportsman who was recently spotted shopping at Avonhead Mall and picking something out of a nasal passage? Sure, most of us, use a tissue to remove such substances, but this writer kept watching said player, and just when he thought no one was watching – feasted on the tiny meal sitting at the end of his finger. It’s a shame his blonde companion missed the whole thing. Till we see you again, practice your mini golf, watch out for segways and try to fly during the day… A Bientot... hem… I’m going to address a rather sensitive subject. Nervous or highly-strung readers might be well advised to take refuge in a cup of tea and the latest newspaper; or even a well thumbed copy of the Bobbsey Twins. Now there’s a good read for you. For those of you still with me, remember you have been warned. You see I intend to discourse upon a certain establishment which flowered recently and briefly in the heart of leafy Merivale, but now, sadly or happily, is no longer with us. The English language is a funny thing in that we have many words and phrases for things that fascinate us, but few or single words for things that don’t. Breasts, for example enjoy a multiplicity of terms and synonyms. I’m sure I do not need to list these, and anyway such a list would more than take up what’s left of this page. Elbows, on the other hand, have very few descriptive terms – in fact ‘elbows’ is about it, apart from the medical appellation. Is it surprising then, that brothels enjoy a list of descriptors as long as your arm and probably both legs. Brothels, bordellos, knock-shops, whorehouses, houses of ill repute, cathouses, bawdy houses, and fornicatoria make up but of few of the endearing and colourful terms for these time-honoured establishments. We must like brothels or we would not have so many names for them. Only one name for elbows, I remind you. It was not surprising then, that the announcement of a new Merivale bordello was received with both interest and dismay in some quarters, especially by the neighbours.
Here was the new name on a plate, and free, what’s more. What could be more appropriate than ‘Merivale Audible Sounds of Climax’ or MASC? As well as the location problems, the establishment was in dispute over its name – similar to another bawdy house apparently. Amongst the complaints, one sharp-eared neighbour reported he could hear “audible sounds of climax,” late at night. What a gift, I thought, given the dispute over the name. Here was the new name on a plate, and free, what’s more. What could be more appropriate than ‘Merivale Audible Sounds of Climax’ or MASC? I could just see the logo: a svelte feline in evening dress, sporting a stylized and alluring mask. Purrrfect! But it was not to be. In the face of mounting public antipathy, the proprietors of MASC decided Merivale perhaps wasn’t quite right for them, and have relocated to Woolston. What does this tell us? Who can say; but sadly my brilliant name ‘MASC,’ is no longer applicable. But one door closes, another opens, as they say. I fell to thinking: what fresh naming opportunities does Woolston open up? I thought of Woolston Audible Sounds of Hospitality – WASH – appropriate for such an establishment, I thought. I tried Woolston Audible Sounds of Priapism (get a dictionary) WASP – a low buzzing sound perhaps. And then it came to me. The new name was sitting there like a ripe plum ready to be plucked. It’s got to be Woolston Audible Noises of Carnal Activity. Now there’s a name for a bawdy house. Yes, work it out.

In this era of Wikileaks and hacked emails, it is perhaps not surprising that the scandal rocking the international art world involves a leaked email from the Gagosian Gallery in New York – the world’s most successful art dealer, once described as “the Death Star of the art world” for the way it leverages its already hefty commissions.
I
n January the Gagosian was sued by the collector Jan Cowles, 93 and suffering from dementia, claiming that Gagosian had sold a painting from her collection without her permission. It seems that Cowles’ son Charles, an art dealer in financial straits, had made the deal in 2008 with Gagosian taking the painting – a 1964 work by pop artist Roy Lichtenstein – on consignment. Gagosian reckoned he could get US$3m and would take a commission of $500,000. But according to emails in 2009, the gallery offered the painting to a collector for considerably less – a bargain. Indeed, one email says, “Seller now in terrible straits and needs cash. Are you interested in making a cruel and offensive offer? Come on, want to try?” Gagosian scored $1m on a $2m sale! Although the stakes aren’t quite so high, the New Zealand market is not immune from such shenanigans. Edward Bullmore was a New Zealand surrealist artist who, for a time, worked in Europe. Despite success there (Stanley Kubrick bought two of his works, one of which appears in A Clockwork Orange), he grew homesick and
returned to teach in Rotorua in 1969, until his death in 1978, aged only 45. John Gow, co-owner of the Gow Langsford Gallery in Auckland, sold a Bullmore painting for more than $5,000 five years ago, without the knowledge of the Bullmore family. Gow’s excuse was that he had lost the paperwork and couldn’t be sure who the owner was, despite the artist’s daughter writing to the auction house that sold the painting in 2007 to ask for proof of ownership. Gow says he will pay the family the proceeds of the work, minus a few hundy as a storage fee for the past 20 years. Cheeky! Sometimes it can be completely innocent. In 2005 the TV show Frontseat (TV made by pretentious luvvies for the chattering classes) gave themselves 11 days to verify the provenance of C F Goldie drawings sold online by Fisher’s Fine Arts. Experts Ute Strehle and Roger Blackley determined some of these works to be fakes. Now these had been sold in good faith by Fisher’s, on behalf of a client, based on the information they had been given, but Frontseat smelled blood. Caveat emptor applies to art too – buyer beware.

If allowed to go unchecked racism will derail cultural and economic stability – two essential components necessary for the rebuild of Christchurch. At a national level the anonymous criticism of the Auckland Blues Super 15 performance blaming the colour of the coach and many players for the team’s woeful performance is intolerable. The discrimination faced by the many people who have foreign sounding names, who have made New Zealand home, studied here and who are seeking employment in New Zealand is also unacceptable. It is also concerning to hear and read the increase in demoralising comments being aimed at the number of migrants looking to make Christchurch home – in the hope of being part of the rebuild process.
Last month I strolled through the Chinese Lantern Festival in Hagley Park amazed at the joy this small group of migrants provided to the people of Christchurch at a time when morale was low and needed a boost. I would hazard a guess that many of these people have not always been welcomed with open arms in this city. As the prospect of rebuild glimmers on the horizon it is clear that we simply do not have the local labour force from a size or competence perspective to complete the herculean task ahead. The increase of foreign accents in the red zone demonstrates the escalating role that our foreign friends are having in the reconstruction of our city. The hands that will rebuild Christchurch will be vastly different to the Anglo Saxon hands that crafted our city 150 years ago. Cantabrians, let us open our arms and minds to all manner of race, creed and religion including “the Irish, the Blacks, the Chinese and the Jews” and thrive on the input these groups will have in rebuilding our city into to a bustling economic and cultural mosaic – far richer for the contribution that our migrant friends will make. I
’ve got this interesting wee relationship going on with a girl named Sarah. She moved here not long after the February earthquake to help with the rebuild. If you don’t know her I’m sure you’ve at least heard of her. Please don’t take this as me being rude - it’s not intended to be – though to be frank, she’s a tad plain. Not in a bad way; more in an inoffensive way. She’s gotten a little plumper than when she first arrived, though a mild case of girth-quake is not solely isolated to this slightly-morerotund-than-anticipated lass. Finally, Sarah also loves acronyms and Helvetica. From that alone you can probably tell there’s a high likelihood that she’s involved with the government to some capacity. And you’d be right. Her father, Gerard, is actually from these parts, though since the mid-to-late ‘90s he’s tended to spend more time up North as a consequence of his career. He’s a rather imposing figure is Gerard. A busy chap, but possesses a somewhat brusque likeability in an effective sense. You get the feeling he wouldn’t stand for any nonsense if someone were to treat his Sarah poorly. The funny thing however is that’s unlikely
to be necessary; Sarah is more than capable of taking care of herself. It’s not much of a secret but Sarah actually possesses immense superpowers. At council, we’re working to achieve an awful lot with the Christchurch rebuild. Through the 106,000 ideas from ‘Share an Idea’, our city has put together a collective vision which we can all be rather proud of. From what I gather, Gerard was pleased with what his hometown came up with too. The ‘What’ was inspiring. The ‘How’ though is where things got tricky. Fortuitously, Sarah’s magical powers specialise in ‘the Art of the How’. Her powers allow her to phaser through onerous requirements which may be well suited to regulating the construction of a garage, though not so much a reasonable sized city. Some people believe that because Sarah was conceived by a gaggle of politicians in Wellington, her involvement potentially diminishes the ‘By Christchurch for Christchurch’ outcome we seek. Is a local marae constructed with CAT machinery then an American structure? Or a Jon Gadsby CC column written on a Toshiba notebook a Japanese story? You must be joking. As per the Superman comics, or TV shows – depending when you were born – he wasn’t to everyone’s liking. But when disaster struck, you sure as heck hoped those powers were used to get the best outcome for the city. I
t was during a meeting with one of Christchurch’s top fashion stylists when I commented on how shiny her hair was. She said, “One word: Stewart.” Mysterious, I thought. It was at this stylist’s fashion event at the Ellerslie International Flower Show that I was again introduced to Stewart’s work during the event’s hair show presented by Corkin + Friends. It was here we saw models hair change from strawberry blonde to chestnut brown, or platinum blonde to near black. The transformation was incredible. You’d never know that earlier that day these girls had an entirely different look – because their new colour suited them so much. So, with these two examples at hand, it made me want to visit Corkin + Friends to see what they could do for me. I’ve had very light blonde hair since I was a child, and as I grew older and it got a shade or more darker I’d always have it brought back to the colour that made me me. Coming into the cooler months I thought that going darker was a risqué but fun idea. So, I gave Stewart Corkin a call. After an initial consultation in which he took
lifestyle, skin tone, eye colour and bone structure into consideration, Stewart decided to soften my blonde hair and take it down a couple of shades. To achieve this he first ‘filled’ my hair with Redken Shades EQ Butter Cream. This gave them a base colour that would last and what he could work off. He then rinsed off the colour, dried the hair and applied Shades EQ Butter Scotch and Toffee – which resulted in a golden beige blonde. Corkin+Friends said my hair was typical of most coloured blondes “dry and sensitised” so at the basin they used Redken All Soft - which cleansed with an ultra-rich formula that softens and smoothes hair leave it feeling like pure silk. And to bring extra shine they gave my hair ‘salon only’ Redken Chemistry shot. He then finished it off with a blow wave, and I was good to go! “ I love it,” I said. Ok, it was brave of me to go darker, but for autumn and winter it’s perfect. And for those of you who’d be keen to do the same thing – one word: Stewart! (and Julie. id you hear the story about the person who was thirty something? You know the one, they started a family, put energy into chasing the career dream, got a mortgage and woke up one day feeling they had lost themselves. Where had the vibrant, fun life they had in their twenties go? I know that this picture doesn’t fit every person in their thirties, but it is common. When you think about life in your thirties it can often be the time when you start to get serious about ‘big picture’ stuff. The mortgage, family and career take a priority and often you are at the very beginning stage in all of these areas. There is a lot to learn and a lot of energy is required just to survive. It is no wonder these key areas in life end up consuming the sense of self. I was at a party a while back talking to a guy who was in this very situation. He had a young family and was trying to build a business. We got talking about health and fitness and he expressed a slight frustration at his increased weight and loss of fitness. This was a guy who had played sport his whole life and I got
the feeling he had always considered himself to be a fit guy. The ‘serious’ life changes he had made recently had created an unhealthier version of himself, and he wasn’t liking this version so much. As the conversation got deeper he expressed that he had every intention of getting out and doing the exercise that he used to do but it just never happened. This got me thinking. This guy’s life had changed in massive ways and the new priorities needed a lot of time and energy. I could tell that the ‘serious’ stuff was very important to him and if he could only invest a little time into his health and fitness it would result in him having a better sense of self. This is a typical case where we are using expectations from a previous period in our lives to benchmark against how we are successful now. As life changes, priorities and focus change too and we have to be realistic around what we can do. For the guy at the party he can’t put the time into exercising like he did five years ago, but he might be able to get three good hours in a week. I know that lowering expectations can seem like failure but it isn’t, it’s all about making you successful based on your current life situation. This is so important at times when you feel you are losing yourself.

There’s nothing at all toplofty about the reincarnated Topkapi, now well established in its new location at the southern end of Manchester Street. PERFECT for MOTHER’S DAY! INGREDIENTS 3 lamb rumps, fully trimmed (approx. 250g each) Sea salt and freshly milled pepper 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed A little chopped mint A little chopped coriander
PARSLEY JUICE 1 bunch parsley, picked 100ml iced water 60ml vegetable oil
ROAST VEGETABLE SALAD 6 medium-sized washed gourmet potatoes, quartered 6 small carrots, peeled then cut into even batons, their full length 6 small parsnips, peeled then cut into even batons, their full length 1 Tbsp picked fresh rosemary 6 cloves peeled garlic, halved Sea salt and freshly milled pepper Extra virgin olive oil to drizzle
GARNISH 300ml of your favourite meat glaze or gravy 6 small Yorkshire Puddings (optional)
METHOD Season the lamb rumps then sear in hot oil until nicely browned. Sprinkle over chopped herbs and garlic then allow to stand for 30 minutes. Blanch the parsley in plenty of boiling, salted water. Refresh in iced water then drain. Place the parsley, water and oil in a food processor then blend until smooth. Pass through a fine sieve into a clean bowl and season to taste. Keep chilled.
ROAST VEGETABLES Mix the prepared vegetables, rosemary and garlic together in a large roasting tray. Season, then drizzle with olive oil. Place in a preheated 180°C oven, and cook until the vegetables are tender, shaking occasionally.
THE RUMPS Place the lamb in a 180ºC oven and roast until medium to rare (approximately 20 minutes). Once cooked, rest in a warm place for 6-8 minutes. Warm the meat glaze and season to taste.
TO SERVE Carefully drain any excess oil from the roast vegetables then evenly divide between the serving plates. Slice the rested lamb into even portions then place over the vegetables. Spoon on the hot sauce, then drizzle around some of the parsley juice. Garnish if so desired, with hot baby Yorkshire Puddings.

he Canon Wilford Wing atrium at St George’s Hospital, became an art gallery for the evening on March 28. St Andrew’s College provided the art works that were auctioned to raise funds for the St George’s Cancer Institute. The erstwhile Barry Watson, auctioneer for the evening, took the bids as drinks and gourmet comestibles were proffered. The creations remained on display in the atrium for one month after the auction. The evening raised in excess of $11,000 for the cause. Money well spent, I’d say.

aking a break from kicking goals and rolling in the mud, members of the Crusaders were guests of honour at “The Evening of Courage”, held at the Gary Cockram Hyundai Super Showroom. The March 20 event enabled children and their families to meet the rugby superstars. Following the meet and greet, children took part in a question and answer session with the players. The evening concluded with an auction which, along with ticket sales, raised in excess of $9,000 for the Child Cancer Foundation.

unny California is the destination for 24 very special children following the Koru Care Christchurch Charity Auction held on March 31. The Airforce Museum was transformed into a speakeasy as the loud suited hosts, Dave Fitzgerald and Jason Gunn, brought the Charleston and prohibition decade to life. Following the splendid dinner, the apper era fun and antics got under way. The guests danced through the night, having divested their wallets of approximately $120,000 for the cause.
