Red and black: Arguably the greatest star of the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony at Eden Park on Friday evening was Ethan Bai, 13, who wore Canterbury’s colours in a specially choreographed rugby show. “Do it for Christchurch my friend,” is what rugby legend Jonah Lomu told him before Ethan placed the ball over the try line. ENGLAND rugby team members received such an enthusiastic welcome from Woolston School pupils last Wednesday it might as well have been the All Blacks visiting. Several members of the England rugby squad including coach Martin Johnson and ex Kiwis rugby league star Shontayne Hape visited the school which had picked them in the Rugby World Cup ‘Adopt a second team’ programme. Pupils welcomed them with a mihi whakatau (Maori welcoming ceremony) before enjoying a skills training session with the players at neighbouring Woolston Park. School pupil Manahi Wawatai, 10, said he was looking forward to “running round, playing with the boys and learning some new tricks” during the session. Hape said the team was sad the earthquake had kept them from being based in Christchurch and the school’s welcome had been awesome. “It’s all good fun. I went to school in New Zealand and any time that anyone came into school and there was time to get out on the field and play rugby it was the best time of the day.” School principal, Janeane Reid, said the visit was really exciting for the children. “It took a bit originally to convince them that it was ok to support another team other than the All Blacks but they’re certainly on board now.” The England team also visited other locations including Christchurch Hospital and AMI Stadium during their goodwill visit to the city. They had been scheduled to play pool matches against Argentina and Georgia at the stadium before it was damaged in the February 22

What did you think of the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony?

samantha@mainlandpress.co.nz

WHEN Ethan Bai took to the Eden Park field during the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup he had more than a red and black jersey on his Fantastic 88% shoulders. The crowd at the Hagley Park fan-zone cheered and clapped the moment Ethan, 13, was illuminated 8% Average in the Canterbury colours. “I thought it was awesome because out of all the kids in New Zealand I’m the one who gets to 4% Disappointing represent Christchurch and pretty much tell a story to the rest of the world about what Christchurch Tell us what you think www.facebook/riseupchristchurch has gone through,” Ethan said from his

Hamilton home. With the eyes of the world on him, Ethan said he felt a little bit nervous on the night. “But I was just trying to focus on all the things I had to do and all the things I had to get right.” Ethan was one of two boys trained for Friday’s event – last Wednesday he was told he, not Christchurch schoolboy Seth Murray, would have the starring role. “It was sort of like mixed feelings of real happy and excited but kind of sad because Seth was the one who was right next to me the whole time, he was doing everything I did except I got one more go.” Ethan said during rehearsals the pair became good mates and it would be “mean” to visit Christchurch one day. He said following the February 22 earthquake, after which Christchurch lost hosting its World Cup games, his school had a mufti day to raise funds for the city. “You had to bring a gold coin but everyone started bring in five dollar notes and

everything and we ended up raising about $700.” He was pleased to hear of the response from Hagley Park. “For people from Christchurch to be cheering for me means a lot because it feels like I’m doing something real good for them and it feels good.” Rugby New Zealand 2011 ceremonies manager Suzanne Peri-Chapman said after the quake they wanted to acknowledge what had happened in a positive way during the fast-paced ceremony. “It’s a very positive image of a little boy soaring, he’s moving forward, he’s achieving the goals,” she said. Ms Peri-Chapman said the choice between the two “terrific” boys was a difficult one. “The unfortunate thing is in a role like that there is only one person doing it on the night but it’s extremely important to be an understudy,” she said. Seth still had a prominent part in the show, as a lead voyager on one of the two large boats. But as for having a Canterbury lad featuring prominently in the closing ceremony, “it would be Richie McCaw holding the cup,” Ms Peri-Chapman said. And the boy who wore the Canterbury colours has a message for its citizens “Just hold in there Christchurch, hopefully something comes good and everything gets better.”

City risks flight of capital Chris Tobin editor@mainlandpress.co.nz

CHRISTCHURCH is risking flight of capital, central city city property owner and developer Antony Gough says and he considers insurance companies have to help. The Christchurch City Council central city draft rebuild plan proposes a maximum of sevens storeys with an additional floor possible where good urban design and green technologies were employed. Glass frontages were limited to one side. “Nobody’s going to go into a modern building that’s got windows on one side,” Mr Gough said. “If the council insists on that we’ll see a flight of capital. It’s as simple as that. It’s serious. “It’s all very well for people to say we’d like two to three storeys. It’s not going to happen. The central city will die if we do that.” Mr Gough said the 12 storey Hong Kong Shanghai Bank building in Worcester Street between the Art Gallery and civic building was an example of what could be achieved. “It’s got a podium and a tower and windows right round. It stood up incredibly

well (in the earthquakes) and Cera is working from there.” If masonry buildings were correctly engineered Mr Gough said there was no risk. Continuing aftershocks above a magnitude of three were delaying any possibility of rebuilding the central city which Mr Gough considered an extraordinary situation. “I would like insurance companies to allow us to proceed. No-one can rebuild if you can’t insure. The banks won’t lend us money. We need to see some of those basic things solved before we can see some rebuilding.” Mr Gough said insurance companies wanted aftershocks to drop under magnitude three for three months. “We’ve had some fours recently so we’ve got a long way to go. It’s going to be a long wait. What I’d like to see is people coming out of the woodwork and saying, ‘this is what I’m going to build’ and we get things moving and some activity.” Submissions on the city council central city draft rebuild plan close on Friday. Mr Gough said of the plan that it was “very good on green issues; not so good on the business reality.”

To Mr Parker

Frustration is growing

To Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker: Dear Mr Parker: Why are you wasting time and money working on the CBD area to get it ready for Show Week. Sorry but you should be looking after the people like myself that elected you in to your job, I mean come on we do not need a train to go from city to the uni as this is waste of money and you know that. All you have to do is look at bus runs. I see this every day where there is sometimes only two people on them, I feel that you should be looking at houses in and around town and help them more. It seems to me and others who elected you into your current job you have let us down very badly and I for one will now be thinking twice about the next election. Graeme C. Peters Hornby

And so the wait continues. The wait is for those aftershocks to call it a day, to stop their malevolent belching. Twelve months since September 4, six months since February 22 there are no signs of significant rebuilding. The insurance industry is waiting for three months of quakes that do not go above magnitude three until they reinsure; the banks are likewise waiting and in the meantime the CBD is daily reduced to rubble and gaping gaps are appearing everywhere. Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee went to Europe last week to visit seven global insurers pleading Christchurch and Canterbury’s insurance case. We have a robust Christchurch City Council

Chris Tobin central city draft rebuild plan certainly (submissions close at 5pm this Friday) but in property owner and developer Antony Gough’s opinion it is “very good on green issues and not as good on the business reality.” The city is poised at a vital time in its history. The council’s draft plan wants no new buildings in the CBD above seven storeys. Property developers such as Mr Gough believe this is not enough; the CBD could not survive under such strictures, they say. On Monday I spoke with a man still waiting after 12 months for 16 claims lodged with the EQC to be settled. He was nearly at his wit’s end, exasperated by the lack of service he had received from the EQC call centre compared to the professionalism of his insurance companies.

Other people, however, are not happy with their insurance companies particularly residential ‘red-zoners’ who are angered the companies are not paying out for full replacement policies on homes earmarked for demolition. Professional firefighters, heroes from February 22, are not having a pleasant time either. They have been in a long-running pay dispute since May and some who were on duty on Sunday upset the city’s fire chief Dan Coward when they attended a memorial service of the 9/11 attacks on the United States. Add to this the sad fact we don’t have any Rugby World Cup matches in the city. Fan-zone in Hagley Park doesn’t cut it. The rest of the country is in party mode. We’re not. Frustration is growing.

Goodbye to home of 40 years First to settle: Dallington resident Keith Moran, left, along with Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority chief executive Roger Sutton, view the ruptured ceiling of his former home on Monday. Mr Moran and wife Margaret became one of the first two red zone home owners to accept the Government’s offer to buy out their land, handing over the keys to Mr Sutton that afternoon. The couple had lived in the house for 40 years but said with such extensive damage it was an easy decision to take the government offer. “We really feel for all the people who live around here, our neighbours who are not in the same position as us because unfortunately, or fortunately, their houses have not been damaged as much as ours has.” More red zone home owners are expected to settle up this week. The draft Central City Plan is out for comment and this is the time for people to let us know what they think - good and bad - about what is detailed in the draft Plan. If people think the draft plan is too green or not sufficiently business/commercially

Goff outlines employment policy Question time: Labour Party leader Phil Goff explains his employment policy for the earthquake rebuild to reporters during a visit to a construction company in Belfast on Thursday. Photo: Samantha Early

Samantha Early samantha@mainlandpress.co.nz OPPOSITION leader Phil Goff is proposing to secure workers for Canterbury’s rebuild using dole money. Mr Goff visited construction businesses during his visit to Christchurch last week. He said there was going to be a massive demand for skilled building industry workers, with calculations from the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera) that 30,000 workers would be needed and 10,000 houses to be rebuilt. Mr Goff told employers Labour’s policy was to secure those workers through subsidising apprentice wages with dole money. “You take on an apprentice out

of Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ) and we will pay the dole payment for the first year to you as a subsidy on the wage of the apprentice. He said it was better than the National Government’s concept of trebling the number of spaces at the Canterbury Tertiary College and setting up a new trades academy for agriculture. “I’m in favour of trades academies, in favour of tertiary high schools, 550 [new places for students] is great but if you need 30,000 people it’s like putting out a fire with an eye dropper. Mr Goff said Canterbury faced the problem of competing with Auckland for skilled labour next

year because money was becoming available for fixing leaky homes and the city has been underbuilding by about a third. Precut Construction owner Chris Miller said the policy would be a helping hand for his company because they had lost a lot of skilled staff to the West Coast and Australia over the past year due to a lack of work coming in. “You can only sweep a floor so many times, Mr Miller said. Mr Goff said taking on an apprentice was expensive for employers in the first year so the scheme would help the 10,500 Canterbury young people not in employment, education or training.

Lyttelton residents’ free ticket to ride

D

oing their bit Mainland Press meets people helping our earthquake recovery

No charge: Lyttelton bus driver Don Ross has been offering a free service between the town and Christchurch since the February 22 earthquake.

Tom Doudney

A LYTTELTON man who set up a free bus from Lyttelton to Barrington Mall soonafter the February 22 earthquake continues to run the service despite the emergency having long since passed. Every Monday Don Ross takes two loads of usually around eight or 10 passengers a day on his 14-seater bus from outside the Lyttelton Recreation Centre to the mall and back. He even meets the Diamond Harbour Ferry and drops Lyttelton residents at their door. Mr Ross started the service as soon as the Lyttelton Road Tunnel opened again after the quake and never expected it to keep going as long as it had. “Once the metro buses came back on I stopped the Lyttelton service but I then got a request to continue because the red busses were not going near shopping

centres.” The trip was typically a pretty social affair and most of his passengers were regulars who often offered him money or fuel receipts to cover petrol. “We try and make it an outing for them. It gives them a chance to see what progress is happening around the route that we take.” Mr Ross who works as a bus driver for various customers including rest homes, continued to run the service for free despite having lost a lot of income as a result of the quakes. Much of his work this Summer would have come from cruise ship passengers who will now not be disembarking in Lyttelton because of damage to the port and town. He said if the free service continued to be needed he would keep running it for the foreseeable future.

Alan Bywater, Council’s Programme Manager Strong Communities says Halswell is one of the fastest-growing parts of Christchurch, perhaps because many who live there feel that they have the best of both worlds – the space and outlook of a semi-rural area close to the Port Hills, but with city amenities only minutes away.

to more than treble over the next 30 years. That is why it is so important that newcomers have every opportunity to settle in and be welcomed into the community,” he says. “The new directory will play a significant role in the development of this fast-growing area by helping new as well as longer-term Halswell residents get involved, make their contribution to a vibrant community and develop that important sense of belonging.” The new directory is available at the Halswell Library, local schools, kindergartens and churches. It can also be found on the Council’s website www.ccc.govt.nz by typing Halswell Community Directory in the search box.

THE Italian author and editor of a book ok telling of New Zealand troops who liberated ed his hometown and region in the Second nd World War says he has found visiting this his country very emotional. Stefano Fusi met up with five New Zealand nd veterans of the Italian campaign as well as family members of those who served and d died there when the English translation off his book, To the Gateways of Florence, wass launched at the University of Canterbury bookshop. “I found a lot of warmth,” Mr Fusi said. “It was very emotional meeting the children of those who lost fathers. There were lots of tears, hugs and bonding.” The book’s cover shows a tank crew among whom is Dunedin man, Bill Harrison - his daughter travelled from Temuka for the book launch. Approximately 12 years ago Mr Fusi, then mayor of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, a small town near Florence, discovered that his town had been liberated from German occupiers not by Americans, as was widely believed, but by New Zealanders, some of whom were killed in the action. “It was a big discovery and I decided to do more research in the national library.

“We found lots of documents and photos and in 2004 we published the book. After this we decided to continue the research and in 2008 I came to New Zealand and met up with Italy Star Association veterans here in Christchurch.” Mr Fusi’s book covers the period from July 21 to August 4, 1944, when New Zealand

troops advanced across Tuscany and the Chianti area on the way to taking Florence from the Germans. “For the Italian people it was a terrible time; there was poverty and lots of civilians were killed. “The German occupation was terrible for all of Italy from 1943 to 1945,” Mr Fusi said.

Coming down: Demolition has begun at the disused malt works site in the Heathcote Valley.

DEMOLITION work has started on the old malt works in the Heathcote Valley to make way for a proposed new housing development. While valley residents are sad to see part of their history go, they’re glad the area is being tidied up. After the malt works closed down in 1999 the four-hectare site was left to go into disrepair and became an attraction for trespassers and vandals – Mainland Press witnessed a group of about four people standing at the top of the tallest grain silo, after sneaking in while the demolition of a neighbouring building was in progress below. Now Property Lifestyle Concepts Developments (PLC), which bought the property off the McCashin family for $1.47 million last October, is demolishing the buildings and wants to build a lifestyle village with about 60 homes for people aged over 55. It could also include terraced housing and a club house, similar to the company’s three other projects, Northbrook Villas in

Rangiora, Sanctuary Villas in Burwood and Rivertown Villas in Kaiapoi. Property developer Jedd Pearce, who along with Mark Revis runs PLC Developments, said it could take up to eight months to clear the Heathcote site. PLC Developments marketing manager Michelle Tait said they had council consent to knock down the outlying buildings but still needed it for the tall grain silos, which

when they were built in the 1970s required the largest continuous concrete pour in Australasia. Ms Tait said several companies had expressed interest in demolishing the silos using explosives. Mr Pearce estimated the demolition could take between six and eight months and they were working on the village proposal with planners and engineers. “Hopefully we will have all the information required in the next six or seven months to put an application to council.” The company had enlisted the help of demolition company Shilton and Brown, which is working in the red zone but leased a hangar on the malt works site. Ms Tait said they hoped to have the first home finished in January 2013 and the development could provide more options for red-zoned residents looking for new houses. Heathcote Valley School student Jack Calvert, one of the many locals who stopped to watch the demolition, said he and his friends watched it at lunchtimes from their playground.

Shirley Boys’ High bounces back

SPRING CLEANING

Staying strong: Shirley Boys’ High School principal John Laurenson sees a bright future for his school after students resumed classes onsite yesterday.

Gina McKenzie gina@mainlandpress.co.nz

SHIRLEY Boys’ High School students were excited to return home yesterday after spending the last six months offsite at Papanui High School. Principal John Laurenson said he was positive about the school’s future and was grateful for the strong community support that helped them survive the tough times since February’s earthquake. “The students are so happy to be home again. We can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel. “We were lucky to get such amazing support from the students to the local community and Papanui High School.” The school will remain in Shirley for the next two years until a decision is made on its future.

Mr Laurenson said the school was slated for a complete rebuild in 2013 but he was unsure if it would be on the current site or elsewhere. “The school was munted after the earthquake and needed a complete overhaul. “We’ve fixed the buildings along with water and drainage issues. It’s not perfect but it is a safe and secure environment for the students.” Mr Laurenson said the roll had dropped slightly since February’s earthquake from 1450 to 1360 but he expected more boys to return now that the school is back onsite. “The future looks bright and I am really positive that we will continue to grow and keep a strong spirit alive.”

Let’s hug ... we deserve it

12 months on, we’re still jumpy Chris Tobin and Abbie Napier

TWELVE L months on from the September 4 earthquake life in the city is still abnormal says the Canterbury District Health Board’s clinical head of the specialist earthquake response team, Caroline Bell. “There has been a whole spectrum of responses to the earthquakes,” she said, “from people who have been very resilient to others at the extreme who have significant anxiety, y and then there’s everyone in the middle. “Everything is still abnormal; people are not sleeping and are still jumpy with aftershocks. There’s worry about EQC and insurance claims and driving past buildings that have been pulled down has an effect. f It’s not what it

was before September 4. “There’s an awful lot that people are contending with.” She said the city was coping “pretty well” and people had become more “connected” as a result of the quakes. “After September and after February (22) everyone felt very connected; people did care and it’s still there. “You Y see it at all levels from the city perspective the plans for the city centre are really positive for people getting involved in community projects.” Dr Bell said people’s perceptions of the city had changed.

said the year was the most challenging for regional business by far. “The people materially involved have been quite badly compromised but have just got on with it. No-one’s saying it’s easy though.” He said the focus of businesses was to push through the delays around insurance and land problems. “I was hoping that would have been resolved a long time ago. Businesses should be looking at the new environment they’re working in and responding to it.” He projected the real business recovery to get under way shortly now the city was beginning to rebuild.

“I think our view of Christchurch has changed but it’s still a beautiful place to live; the beaches being open will bring us back to what we love. “It’s still reasonably easy to get around. Lots of things haven’t changed.” Christchurch Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button said the city had come a long way in a year. “I think we’re doing really well considering we’ve had ongoing events.” She said the anniversary this weekend provided a good opportunity to “push pause and take time to reflect.” Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend

RETAILERS are keen to return to the central city, judging by the response to the pop up retail precinct due to open in Christchurch’s Cashel Mall next month. The Re:Start precinct will feature 27 shops and cafes built from new shipping containers. Re:Start the Heart Trust chairman John Suckling said the response had been outstanding and 75% of the leases had already been signed. “It’s clear from the discussions we’ve had with retailers that they’re very keen to get back into the central city as soon as possible. We’ve received great feedback on this concept and I think everyone is starting to countdown until we

open on October 29. “We know that at first people will just be interested to see Cashel Mall for the first time since February. We’re really confident that they’ll be wowed by the development, which is very cool and will be a destination for shoppers who have been denied an inner city retail experience. We’ve been very careful to do something which will make people feel safe but at the same time be inspiring.” Concept store Yoobee, which specialises in selling the Apple brand as well as other high end computer products, last week confirmed it was opening a store in the precinct.

Among other tenants are Scorpio Books, Hunters and Collectors, Johnson’s Grocery, Storm and 3 Wise Men while women’s retailer Minnie Cooper, which has stores in Auckland and Wellington, is also taking space. The pop up precinct, divided into north and south, will sit alongside and opposite Ballantynes in Cashel Mall. As well as reopening its existing store, Ballantynes has also taken space in the containers to showcase many of its brands including Karen Walker as well as GStar, Industrie, Ben Sherman, and Ketze. The development will be open seven days a week.

Tourism flat but expected to pick up Tom Doudney

CHRISTCHURCH has not seen any significant increase in tourism business in the early days of the Rugby World Cup but those in the industry are hoping things will pick up as the tournament progresses. Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief executive Tim Hunter said there had been some rise in demand for tourism products but “not a deluge as yet.” However, there had been a big rise in the number of motor homes and rental cars booked out in the city which boded well for the coming weeks. “There will be a lot of visitors on the road in the South Island in the next six weeks which is good because it’s going to bring a bit of a boost right across the tourism sector in Canterbury and the whole South Island.” Games in Dunedin, Invercargill and Nelson meant

travellers would be moving around the island and that would lead to more activity locally, he said. “Accommodation in the city has been very heavily booked and we would attribute that not just to earthquake activity but to people staying for the World Cup.” Black Cat Cruises owner Paul Bingham said they were busier than before the World Cup but that only meant ‘steady.’ However, that could yet change, he said. “If one of the big teams loses early, like say England goes out in the quarters or even earlier than that, I think you would probably find that people who have got firm booked flights will be scratching around for things to do.”

New Ferrymead to emerge

Mt Pleasant looks to future Tom Doudney

A GROUP of Mt Pleasant design professionals want to get other residents thinking about how rebuilding in the suburb could improve the community. Architect Melanda Slemint, one of between six and eight group members, said they hadn’t developed any conclusions yet but there was an opportunity to “kick start a new vitality” into the area. “What we’ve done is some analysis diagrams to encourage people to look at the suburb as a whole and see the patterns and look at the links between the public spaces and the parks and the transport nodes and the green and blue spaces.” One issue discussed by the group was

the lack of a community hub or natural gathering space in a natural disaster. Community facilities and businesses were currently being spread across the suburb. Some tentative possibilities included relocating the Mt Pleasant Memorial Community Centre to share a purpose built facility with Mt Pleasant School; rebuilding the damaged Major Hornbrook Rd shops in a more mixed use plan or even integrating them with the community centre and rebuilding the damaged Mt Pleasant Kindergarten closer to the school. A public meeting was held at the Redcliffs Bowling Club last night to discuss the issues.

Tom Doudney

THE Christchurch City Council’s master planning of Ferrymead’s commercial centre should breathe some much needed new life into the area, proponents say. Council planners are taking a fresh look at how to shape future development in Ferrymead, as well as the rest of Ferry Rd between Fitzgerald Ave and the Ferrymead Bridge, as part of its post-earthquake Suburban Centres programme. The council approved the area’s inclusion in the programme after a deputation by the Mt Pleasant Memorial Community Centre and Residents Association last month. Mt Pleasant architect and member of the residents’ association Melanda Slemint said

Ferrymead was the major commercial hub for Mt Pleasant residents, yet despite it being closer, many preferred to go to Redcliffs or Sumner. Ms Slemint said Ferrymead had a range of drawbacks including being very car focussed, with high traffic flow, little public space or shelter from the wind and it was unappealing to cycle or walk there from Mt Pleasant. “I think it could be vastly improved for a small amount of money. Ferrymead is surrounded by an astounding wetland and an exquisite river and yet it doesn’t pay respect to either of those.” Hagley Ferrymead councillor Yani

Johanson said master planning Ferry Rd from the city to the sea was well overdue and would improve the city’s overall vitality. “We need to have a more realistic look at that area and not just locally because to me it has become very disconnected and piecemeal with a lot of ad hoc development.” The owner of Ferrymead’s Mudfish Café Donna Dahren said there were improvements that could be made to the area but council would need to consult well with business owners and residents. “It (Ferrymead) is great and people love it but we sort of probably need a bit of a helping hand over here.”

Mrs Fowler said she had no safety concerns about visiting the repaired shopping centre. “I’m sure it’s perfectly safe otherwise they wouldn’t open. I’ll be back once a week to do my shopping.” The Palms manager Keryn Ward said customer safety was the number one priority for the shopping centre. “We had a dedicated team of experts working with us through the remedial programme. “All repair and refurbishing work has been completed to an exemplary standard.” Ms Ward said the reopening provided a much needed boost for the local community which had been through so many hard times since the earthquake. Uni student to work on the ice Chris Tobin

WHEN summer arrives soon University of Canterbury student John Evans will be living in a tent on the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica. Mr Evans, 20, has been named as the 2011 Antarctic Youth Ambassador by the Sir Peter Blake Trust. In October he will travel to the frozen continent to undertake restoration work with the Antarctic Heritage Trust on Sir Ernest Shackleton’s hut at Cape Royds and Robert Falcon Scott’s Terra Nova hut at Cape Evans. He will be camped on the ice with five others. “It’s a bit unnerving not knowing 100 percent what will be going on,” the mechanical engineering student said. “I’ve have been given a lot of useful information and been kitted out with all the equipment. “I go on October 26 for one month; hope-

fully the period can be extended.” A team of six will be based at the camp site. The Antarctic Youth Ambassador programme, now in its fifth year, is run by The Sir Peter Blake Trust, Antarctica New Zealand and the Antarctic Heritage Trust. Sir Peter Blake Trust spokesperson Hannah Prior said the trust received a number of outstanding applications but Mr Evans stood out. “John’s a keen outdoorsman and handyman with lots of practical experience. He’s a proven leader, and a self-motivated mechanical engineering student with an interest in the environment, sustainability and renewable energy,” she said. Mr Evans represented Canterbury at the 2007 Sir Peter Blake Youth EnviroLeaders’ Forum when he was at high school.

Human rights battle continues in South Africa

Brendon BURNS MP for Christchurch Central

The president of Abahlali baseMjondolo, South Africa’s urban shack dwellers movement, S’bu Zikode, left, was in New Zealand last week to speak on the 30th anniversary of the 1981 Springbok tour protests. However he says the fight for human rights in his home country is far from over. TOM DOUDNEY reports...

WHILE the South African rugby team’s arrival to a warm Wellington welcome last week made 1981 seem like a distant memory, one of their countrymen was busy making sure the past is not forgotten. S’bu Zikode came to New Zealand as a guest of Global Peace and Justice Auckland to commemorate the anniversary of the tour and give several talks around the country on ‘housing as a human right.’ While he wished to acknowledge the importance of the 1981 protests which culminated in the infamous Eden Park scenes of September 12, Mr Zikode said he had also come to deliver some bad news about human rights in modern day South Africa. “The democracy that was hard won is now serving the interest of the few while the majority are living in deep poverty,”

Page 13

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 14, 2011

he said. “In South Africa we have a population of 50 million, out of which 23 percent is unemployed and 2.3 million people are living in shacks, in shanty towns, in slums.” Mr Zikode said the country suffered badly from political corruption and remained one of the most unequal societies in the world, with a lack of housing, infrastructure and other services contributing to a lack of human dignity. “We are making a call to New Zealanders. “While we greatly salute the role that they have played in contributing to a non-racial democratic South Africa, we are saying that the contribution that they have made is not enough.” People could help by raising awareness, campaigning, writing to local newspapers or South African embassies.

St Thomas student-inventors impress Samantha Early

A GROUP of young entrepreneurs whose earthquakeinspired emergency power generator is now being manufactured for market has impressed one of the city’s leading education figures. The six St Thomas of Canterbury College year 12 and 13 students invented a device called the Lion Advance, which is used to charge cell phones, batteries and power high intensity light using energy from boiling water. On Friday they took a tour of the University of Canterbury and met vice-chancellor Dr Rod Carr, who praised them for their perseverance. The students came up with the idea for their Lion Foundation’s Young Enterprise Scheme last December and formed a company called Advanced Clean Energies (ACE). They wanted to help people following the September 4 earthquake and realised keeping cell phones running during power outages was a big need. Sam Mackwell, 17, said they built the prototype in his West Melton garage early this year and spent the two weeks their school was closed following the February 22 quake to refine their product. “We made 20 prototypes before we were satisfied with the final one, James Agnew, 17, said.

They have now moved manufacturing to Sam’s living room and engaged West Melton company CNC Routing to make the aluminium discs. The young businessmen have sold 10 already and have another 20 on order, with Mitre 10 Mega in Hornby asking for more stock. The group said they wanted to keep the product affordable and did not aim to make large profits and they were also determined to take it beyond Christchurch, sending one to the village of Arusha in Tanzania. “We wanted to have an enterprise without borders and extend it to a global community, Craig Stanton, 17, said. The Lion was officially launched last month by former Prime Minister Helen Clark and the next step for ACE is attending a trade fair and writing their first annual report. The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme regional awards will be held on October 31 with the national finals in Wellington in December. Meanwhile, Dr Carr was glad to hear four of the six young men planned to enrol at the niversity. “We need our first year cohort to be big and strong, he said.

SOME earthquake-affected bus services have been able to return to their previous routes this week. From Monday changes were made to the 18 Huntsbury, 21 Ilam to Mt Pleasant, 40 Wainoni, 46 Marshland and 480 Kainga routes. The 18 Huntsbury service (formerly known as 18 St Martins) will resume travelling up Huntsbury Ave. Once at the top, buses will turn around and come back down via the same route. The timetable will remain the same. The 21 Ilam to Mt Pleasant

service, more recently known as the 21 Ilam to Ferrymead, will return to travelling up Mt Pleasant via Major Hornbook Rd and terminate opposite Rockview Place. On trips back to the city it will loop around Madeley Rd, Mt Pleasant Rd and Belleview Tce turning back onto the same route it travelled up the hill via Major Hornbrook Rd. The 40 Wainoni service will return to its previous route travelling back over the Wainoni Rd Bridge and down New Brighton Rd onto Seaview Rd. The timetable will remain the same.

The 46 Marshland will also return to its previous route down Briggs Rd and Emmett St. It will no longer use Hills Rd. As Shirley Boys High School is returning to its Shirley site next week, the 480 Kainga service will have two timetable changes to accommodate the school hours. The bus will now leave weekdays at 7.30am from Kainga and return at 3.00pm from Shirley Boys High School and the Palms Mall. More information about the changes can be found at metroinfo. co.nz or by calling 03 366 88 55.

Broken or blocked wastewater and water networks have been temporarily repaired to allow services to be restored to homes and businesses. Permanent repairs are also being carried out and strategic planning is underway to ensure the permanent rebuild of all of the city’s earthquake damaged parks, roads and wastewater and water networks is undertaken to deliver the greatest value per dollar spent.

One of the major projects underway is the repair of Fitzgerald Avenue. The northbound lane of Fitzgerald Avenue suffered severe cracking along the Avon River. Fortunately, the southbound lane has been able to remain open, enabling repairs to occur while

The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team is using an innovative technique to stabilise the ground and adjacent riverside retaining wall that supports the road. Five hundred stone columns, each 600 millimetres in diameter, are being inserted into the ground to a depth of ten metres over a 200 metre length of the road. The riverside retaining wall will be reconstructed once the stone columns are completed. Damaged water and wastewater lines will also be repaired and a new footpath constructed. The southbound lane will be reconstructed when the northbound lane has reopened.

Winning collection: Looks from Georgia Currie’s Wonder Axis.

WINNING a prestigious young designer award at New Zealand Fashion Week has provided a boost of confidence for a Christchurch student. Georgia Currie, who is in her final year of her fashion technology and design degree at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT), won the Westpac Young Designer award after showing three outfits from her Wonder Axis collection on the fashion week runway earlier this month.

Fashion winner: CPIT student Georgia Currie, 20, has won the Westpac Young Designer award at this year’s New Zealand Fashion Week.

“It was an explosion of excitement, it’s pretty amazing, Ms Currie said of her win, which earned her $5000 in prize money along with mentoring from designer and businesswoman Angela Lewis. Ms Currie said the award confirmed fashion was the right direction for her and would make it easier to start her own label in the future. She hoped to travel or work for another designer before branching out on her own. “It has given me another boost

of confidence which I had maybe been lacking with the earthquakes and other stuff happening. Even though all this hard stuff has been happening there is still all this good stuff happening so I’ve just got to keep on powering through. While the Heathcote Valley resident now has a lot of decisions to make about her future, for the moment she is concentrating on designing her new collection for CPIT’s end of year fashion showcase.

THE future of the Godley House site at Diamond Harbour is secure, Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker says dispelling rumours that the land could be sold. “The council has no intention of selling it. What’s going to happen with the Godley House site will be what the community wants to see,” Mr Parker said at a ‘wake’ held on site last Sunday. “It’s important for us to work together to find a solution.” Despite grey skies and cool temperatures, about 250 people gathered to say farewell to the historic building. Sculpture gifted to city A SPECIAL commemorative pounamu koru sculpture is to be gifted to the people of Christchurch as a symbol to guard over the earthquake-hit city. Hokitika’s Glen Surgenor a leading greenstone carver, has been carving and shaping pounamu for 27 years and he said he wanted to give a special big koru to watch over the city, to help lift people’s spirits and give them hope. ``I believe there are many more people suffering in Christchurch – individually and collectively - than the news shows us on television,’’ Mr Surgenor said. “The losses both personally and financially will continue to burden Canterbury for many years. The koru will represent new beginnings and growth

which is appropriate for this presentation gift.’’ The carving will be handed over to Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker next month.

Famous actress becomes Court patron ONE of the world’s leading actresses, Dame Maggie Smith, has accepted the role of patron of The Court fundraising appeal. An intensive campaign is underway to raise the $4.6 million urgently needed to construct the new Court Theatre in Addington, known as “The Shed” and to have it open before the end of the year. The theatre’s artistic director Ross Gumbley said it was an honour to have the support of the award winning actress, who has been concerned about Christchurch after the recent earthquakes. “On the telephone over the last few weeks, she has been asking how the city is and how everyone is coping, expressing real concern and offering to help in any way she can,” he says. Chief executive of The Court Theatre, Philip Aldridge, who trained as an actor in the UK, approached Dame Maggie to take on the role. Before the February earthquake, plans were being developed with Miss Smith for an international arts leadership programme to be based in Christchurch, however after February they agreed that the pressing needs of re-opening The

Valuable family records go digital A NEW digitisation project between Archives New Zealand in Christchurch and FamilySearch, a genealogy website was launched by Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker last week. The project will make digitised images of wills and probate records for Christchurch, the West Coast and Timaru available online, free to the public. The records currently identified for including in the project range between 1855 and 1998. The nearly two million records will take up to five years to scan and are being captured digitally by Family Search and Archives New Zealand volunteers. The first records to be digitised are the 35,121 files from the Timaru High Court. Christchurch regional archivist Chris Adam said Archives New Zealand was committed to moving its services online to provide better and more equitable access to a valuable national and community resource. “As part of this transformation we aim to have 90 percent of our high use paper archives digitised and available online by 2018, he said. “Working with FamilySearch to digitise the probates will help us achieve this goal. FamilySearch is a genealogical organisation funded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. KAIAPOI residents are fuming over a lack of public consultation for a proposed bowling club in Hinemoa Park which they say will destroy the last large community park left in southern Kaiapoi after the earthquakes. The proposal, which the Kaiapoi Community Board approved for resource consent consideration last month, would see the Waimakariri District Council lease 5000 square metres of land in the middle of Hinemoa Park to the Riverside Bowling Club for two bowling greens, a pavilion and a 35 space car park. Riverside Bowling Club president Gary Bodger said Hinemoa Park was a designated sports ground and the planned complex left enough space for the community. “There will be plenty of room for locals to enjoy the park. We’re only using a small area. Mrs Francis said her group believed the community should have free and unrestricted access to the park as Kaiapoi had limited recreation facilities after the earthquakes. “Why should a private members-only sports club construct a permanent closed off facility in a public park? ““The kids have lost so much already with the earthquakes. We don’t want to lose the last green space in this area for them to play on. The Kaiapoi Community Board stated at its meeting last month that it would arrange a formal consultation process with affected neighbours which could result in the proposal being modified.

To cap things off, eight Cobham students were also named in the ‘tournament teams’ for football and hockey – meaning they were among the best players in their sports. Cobham Intermediate sports coordinator Craig Dalzell said the school was stoked to get such an

unbelievable result. “We’re absolutely amazed to think that those kids can go away, considering the year we’ve had, and then to perform at that level at the national champs is just amazing.” Captain of the boys’ football team Alexander Evlampieff was happy with how the tournament went. “A lot of us were told when we went up there that we wouldn’t do that well because we were too small of a team and we wouldn’t have the strength to cope but we got there and it was a shaky first game but we sort of grouped together and took it to the final.” The AIMS event is the biggest sporting tournament for intermediate and middle schools in New Zealand, with 121 schools represented at this year’s event. Next year the competition will be extended to include international schools as well.

Portable school pools impress Gina McKenzie

STUDENTS in the eastern suburbs and Kaiapoi will be able to continue their swimming lessons this summer using portable pools. Many schools have struggled to find swimming facilities after the closure of QEII and Kaiapoi’s Aquatic Centre due to earthquake damage. Two portable pools provided by Sport Canterbury will be in action from term four with one based in Kaiapoi and the other in the

Queenspark/Parkview area. Kaiapoi Borough School principal Ash Maindonald said he was delighted with the creative initiative. “It’s such a clever solution and I am hugely impressed by the generosity behind it. “We’re surrounded by water and it’s vital for children to learn how to swim.” Parkview School principal Les Gray said his school was extremely happy that students would be able

to get back in the water again. “With QEII out of action it has been really difficult for the students so it will be great to have a pool for them.” Sport Canterbury chief executive Geoff Barry said the pools would also be able to be used over the weekends and during the summer holidays. The organisation hopes to secure funding for two additional pools which would start operating at the beginning of the 2012 school year.

Bells herald godwits arrival St PAUL’S Anglican Church in Papanui marked the arrival of the godwits by ringing its bells yesterday, a role it adopted after the Christchurch Cathedral was severely damaged in February’s earthquake. Bar-tailed godwits usually return to Christchurch in the second or third week of September and herald the return of warmer weather. So far 14 birds have returned to the city and more are expected to arrive over the next few weeks.

Top marks: The Air Force Museum at Wigram has scored 100-percent in its tourism quality assessment.

THE Air Force Museum of New Zealand at Wigram has passed its tourism quality assessment with flying colours. The museum gained a 100-percent score in its annual Qualmark assessment, which was completed in August. It underwent a comprehensive on-site assessment of its service, facilities, safety and operating systems, comparing it against tourism industry standards. The score puts Wigram, the birth place of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, amongst the country’s leading tourism operators.

Museum director Therese Angelo said she was honoured to receive such a high rating and thanked all staff and volunteers for their untiring efforts. “The fact that the museum has only been closed for 17 days since September 4, 2010, is testament to the hard work of my staff and their desire to ensure locals and visitors to our city have a cultural experience within Christchurch, and to enjoy their visit with us.” The Qualmark assessment also made special note of the museum’s support for other Christchurch businesses and cultural organisations following the February 22 earthquake.

Shopping shuttle helps Dallington elderly ELDERLY Dallington residents who felt isolated after the earthquakes are excited about a free shuttle service to the Palms mall that started operating on Monday. Dallington Residents’ Association president Paul Fleming said elderly residents had suffered since the earthquakes due to a lack of public transport in the area.

“We are really excited about this new service provided by the Palms since many older people haven’t been able to get out and about since February. “Being able to go shopping a few times a week will help them feel less isolated.” The free service leaves the Gayhurst Medical Centre at 11am and departs from the Palms mall at 2pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

New turf to transform ground A NEW state-of-the-art $1.6 million artificial football turf at ASB Football Park, formerly English Park, is on track to be completed by the end of the month. The turf is designed to remain playable in all weathers while upgraded lighting should improve conditions for play and be more friendly for neighbours. This is the first turf of its kind in Christchurch and only the second installed in New Zealand via the FIFA Goal Programme, following the success of a similar turf at North Harbour Stadium. The project is a partnership between Christchurch City Council, FIFA (football’s world governing body), New Zealand Football and

Mainland Football. Mike Coggan, chief executive of Mainland Football was thrilled with the financial and human resource support that it had received from all partners. “This is a tremendous opportunity to spread a love of the beautiful game through providing a top-class football venue that can be used come rain or shine.” An open day will be held on October 2, commencing with a blessing of the ground by kaumatua, Rakiihia Tau, of Ngai Tuahuriri and a performance by its kapa haka group. Local clubs will parade around the pitch before FIFA dignitaries officially inaugurate the ground.

New hockey boss takes charge Tom Doudney

CANTERBURY Hockey’s new chief executive, John Tyler says he faces a “huge challenge” imposed by the earthquakes but is happy to have inherited an organisation in good shape to meet those demands. Tyler has come to the role from a mixed background of radio sports broadcasting, industrial marketing and, perhaps most relevantly, as the former chief executive of Bowls Canterbury for five years. He replaces Tim Shannahan who has left to pursue new goals after feeling drained by the demands placed on Canterbury Hockey by the earthquakes. Mr Tyler says the organisation is in good heart financially, is well governed and he has a good team around him. “He (Mr Shannahan) has left hockey in a very good condition so I’m quite happy to be taking over something that is running very well.” Although he admits there will be a learning curve to follow, he is looking forward to taking the organisation to the next level. “Any not for profit organisation, any sporting organisation, not everybody is going to agree with what you have to do but you have to pick the line down the middle that keeps most people happy.” One of the big challenges facing Canterbury Hockey will be getting back to having a headquarters with suitable facilities for international competition, following the loss of Porritt Park. He hopes this can be achieved in the next five years. “Porritt Park was ideal around the 1974 Commonwealth Games but things have changed quite considerably there so now we have the chance to build something that could well be New turf: Canterbury Hockey chief executive John Tyler at Nunweek Park. the best in the country.” Photo: Tom Doudney

Special treat for schoolboys A GROUP of Christchurch schoolboys who worked hard to help repair their school’s broken goalposts have been rewarded with a training session with some of their Canterbury rugby heroes. The boys were among a group of 20 treated to the session by the Canterbury Rugby Football Union and one of its sponsors, Christchurch International Airport Ltd. The boys were selected by their schools, Fendalton Primary School and Burnside Primary School and put through their paces by Canterbury coach Tabai Matson,

with players Andrew Olorenshaw, Ash Parker, Nasi Manu, Robbie Fruean and Tyler Bleyendaal. Fendalton Primary School principal Paul Sibson said he offered the session to boys who had shown leadership at the school. “We saw the session as a great way to thank the boys for their hard work in replacing our rugby posts, which were broken in a storm earlier in the year. The boys put in several hours of their own time to source new posts, so all the schools’ rugby teams could carry on playing.”

We have been told about the amount of money around to assist organisations, but we have really seen very little by way of substantial investment in Canterbury Sport. The quiet, unassuming, tireless working CEO, David WITH the earlier season start, the Blackwell has just pulled off a big one with a $1 nomination process for the Christchurch million sponsorship to assist with the reconstruction of Junior Cricket Association (CJCA) the iconic Wilding Park. Blackwell time and again over his 20 year reign has shown extraordinary vision when it has been required to lift the profile of the sport he has been a servant of, this is just another example. Full marks to both CEOs for representing their sport in the best possible way.

Finally some great news for Canterbury sport THIS week two announcements have come out that will gladden the hearts of sports fans not just in Canterbury but around New Zealand. First up the 2011 nomadic Crusaders are going to have a home right here in Christchurch for the 2012 Super 15 season. CEO of the Canterbury Rugby Union, Hamish Riach, made a promise that if he had to walk over broken glass he would, to guarantee Todd Blackadder and his mighty band of men that they will have a home venue in Christchurch. Addington Rugby League ground has been approved to act as headquarters for Crusaders’ rugby for next season and beyond. For how long who knows, so how much money do you invest in the makeover? That decision has been taken by the powers that be and there were a number of groups involved in the decision making. Sure it’s going to be a case of utilising any, whatever, wherever, infrastructure that can be begged, borrowed or stolen from around the country to make the dream a reality. The second piece of good news should not really have surprised me.

There are a lot of people who are red and trauma sed from the earthquakes and all the a ershocks,” says owner Judy Astwick. Judy believes it is important for women to spend me on themselves and enjoy having something done for them, such as a beauty treatment, which doesn’t cost a lot but can significantly improve their self-esteem and sense of well-being. “Having a facial, a massage, nail enhancement or other beauty treatments provides much more than the appearance benefits, it gives a woman a chance to take me out, have some personal a en on and de-stress,” she says. A gi voucher from The French Connec on Beauty Clinic is a wonderful gesture of kindness. “It is so sa sfying to be able to give friends gi s like that. Sensational silverbeet Silverbeet is such a wonderful vegetable - easy to grow and nutri onally sound. In fact, silverbeet is high in dietary fibre, vitamins, A, C, E, K and B6, riboflavin, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, manganese, thiamin folate, zinc and sodium. It is low in saturated fat and cholesterol and is a great veggie for weight loss or maintaining op mum health. Most people like it but there are a few who can’t stomach it. So for those who have memories of waterlogged, boiled silverbeet, here’s as recipe that adds a bit of sauce to a garden stalwart and may en ce those who turn up their noses to at least try!

When done put to one side. • Slice onions finely and crush the garlic, panfry both in the oil un l onions are lightly browned.

Silverbeet is: Low in saturated fat and cholesterol High in dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, riboflavin, vitamin B6, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, manganese, thiamin, folate and zinc. HELPING YOU TAKE POSITIVE STEPS TOWARDS ACHIEVING YOUR GOALS.

Amazing benefits with hypnotherapy Today's busy lifestyles can o en lead to high levels of stress and anxiety, which can impact nega vely upon our sleep pa erns and how we interact with those around us. By using hypnotherapy to relieve your stress levels, you are dealing with the root causes and how you react to them, rather than simply masking their eects. Transform Hypnotherapy are specialists in their ďŹ eld. They can also teach you relaxa on techniques that will help deal with future situa ons that may have previously caused you to feel anxiety. This is par cularly helpful for those suering from earthquake-related stress, and dealing with the ongoing a ershocks. Clinical Hypnotherapist Julie e Harris says our subconscious mind is like a large ďŹ le-storage facility which stores all our automa c responses such as breathing, blood circula on and ssue repair, as well as all our learned responses such as walking, holding a pencil, riding a bike or driving a car. Our subconscious mind also stores our less resourceful and some mes problema c learned responses or behavioral habits, such as, overea ng, smoking, fears and phobias, anxiety or sleep disorders. In order to modify some of these behaviours, we must ďŹ rst access the subconscious

mind and then re-program it with more desired pa erns of behaviour. This is achieved using a progressive relaxa on technique which relaxes your mind and your body, allowing us to bypass the cri cal faculty of the conscious mind and deal directly with the subconscious. Hypnotherapy is a safe and enjoyable process that can change lives in the most posi ve and exci ng of ways. It can assist you with many problem areas, such as smoking, weight reduc on, sleep problems, stress or anxiety, enuresis (bedwe ng), nail bi ng, pain relief, fears and phobias, conďŹ dence, public speaking, sport, and so much more. When under hypnosis you will feel very relaxed and comfortable, me passes quickly, and your subconscious mind becomes very recep ve to new sugges ons and ideas. O en one session is suďŹƒcient to deal with issues which have arisen in the shorter term, however between 2 and 4 sessions can be more beneďŹ cial to those with more long-term and deep-rooted problems.

Celery has great versatility

GARDEN CENTRE

CELERY is one of those vegetables that never seems to go out of fashion, perhaps because of its versa lity and its ability to be used in a wide range of dishes. This is an important crop both for private and market gardens, as it possesses a high food value. Varie es and types: The most popular variety of celery is tall Utah improved. It grows up to 60cm and produces lots of dark green leaves and crunchy stalks. When, where and how to plant: Celery can be planted out from August un l March. Choose a well-drained posi on in full sun. Soil must be well dug over prior to plan ng. Celery seed is ny and can be challenging to germinate in the garden. If you want to grow your own from seed, sow in trays and transplant once seedlings are big enough. Sow very thinly, and press the seed into the soil. The seeds are slow to germinate and the seedlings are delicate. Note that celery is one of the most sensi ve crops to water. If it dries out it will bolt and go to seed immediately. Hence, it is always a good

idea to add compost to the soil prior to plan ng. Plant in rows 30cm apart with 60cm between the rows if you want to have more than one row. Growing guide: Keep well watered, but not soggy throughout the warm months. Apply general fer liser during the growing season to the side of the plants. Nitrogen in the form of nitrate of soda should not be given, for although it encourages great growth it can make the stems hollow and so . Harvest: Cut once stalks reach 20-25cm long. You can either harvest the whole plant at once or gently cut of stalks, as you need them. As soon as your plant starts to go to seed, the celery will taste bi er. How to use: Celery is used in weight-loss diets, where it provides low-calorie dietary fibre. Celery seeds are also a great source of calcium, and regarded as a good alterna ve to animal products. Celery can be used in sauces, soups, s r-fries or as a dipping vegetable. Not suitable to freeze.

Cinemascoped Kate McRae THE GUARD Take an unconventional Irish policeman, a couple of unsolved murders, and an FBI agent on the wrong side of the Atlantic chasing half a billion dollars worth of cocaine. Throw in a host of off-beat characters, including a Schopenhauer-quoting sociopathic killer, ask some of the big questions such as who or what did they really throw off the Tallahatchie Bridge, then add lashings of self-mocking Irish humour and you have The Guard. This is the debut feature from director/ writer John Michael McDonagh, whose brother Martin made the fabulous In Bruges. Although less brutal than its cinematic ‘cousin’ The Guard shares the same clever blend of comedy, pathos and drama – the two also have something else in common – actor Brendan Gleeson. For years Gleeson has been playing a succession of sidekicks to the main event, but this time he steps out on to centre stage as Sergeant Gerry Boyle, a role McDonagh supposedly custom wrote for him. It shows, as he shines from start to finish and is just a joy to watch, deadpanning his way

Lyttelton singer excited to hit the road

Tom Doudney AFTER two years working on her latest album, Lyttelton musician Amiria Grenell, above, can’t wait to tour on it this month. Although it is technically her third solo album, Three Feathers became the first to be widely released in mainstream record stores when it hit the shelves this week. Ms Grenell, who has been playing gigs since the age of 14, described her sound as “a bit of everything” including folk, country, reggae and blues. She attributed the plethora of styles to coming from a musical family which includes her father country singer John Grenell and her brothers hip hop and jazz producer Oakley Grenell and ex-Shapeshifter drummer Redford Grenell. Ms Grenell, who played vocals and guitar herself, said it was cool to have a range of other Christchurch musicians playing on the album. “I suppose having a whole band backing me and then a lot of guest musicians on it has just given it such a different sound because I’ve been a solo musician for years.” Oakley produced the album from Melbourne with the two of them communicating via email, a process which contributed to the length of time it took to complete. Ms Grenell will start her national tour in Auckland tomorrow and wind things up in Christchurch at the Arts Festival on September 29. Following that she will hit the road again, this time in support of Fly My Pretties as they tour New Zealand and Melbourne.

past the prejudices of the transplanted big-city cop. Adding to Gleeson’s standout performance is a great script and a whole host of well-rounded characters. Don Cheadle plays FBI agent Wendell. They might seem like an odd pairing - a kind of Lethal Weapon in reverse - but it works. Both actors play things straight with careful measured delivery which does justice to McDonagh’s witty words. McDonagh’s attention to detail means that even the smallest of supporting roles are gems, such as the bizarre local boy Eugene (Michael Og Lane) who is always uncannily around the action. There are also strong performances from the evervillainous Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes) and Fionnula Flanagan as Boyle’s terminally ill mother. The Guard is occasionally foul mouthed and its definitely cynical but it’s also full of laugh out loud pure joy and is ultimately life affirming. Gleeson’s Gerry Boyle is as bent a straight cop as you will ever see in a movie and he will leave you

Scribe’s latest rap CHRISTCHURCH-born rapper Scribe’s newly released version of ‘Not Many’ aims at raising spirits and raising funds. The re-invigorated single is the result of a conversation between a few people at the Bank of New Zealand who were heavily involved on the ground in Christchurch, about how to salute the resilience of Cantabrians who have endured over 8500 quakes. The idea was to celebrate the spirit of the people. The special release of Not Many is available for purchase on Amplifier.co.nz (http://www.amplifier. co.nz/release/75424/not-many-cities-single. html?full=1) and itunes (http://itunes.apple.com/nz/ album/not-many-cities-single/id463396870) with all proceeds going to Plunket.
