On the wings of an angel Remembering February 22, 2011
Deep emotion: Yesterday was a deeply emotional time for Christchurch as the city and country remembered last year’s terrible February 22 earthquake which claimed 185 lives. For CTV receptionist Mary Anne Jackson it was a day to remember her 16 CTV work colleagues who died and to recall her own personal miraculous escape. She and CTV staff placed the wreath at the CTV site yesterday afternoon. Story inside back. Photo: Chris Tobin

Symbolism of hope
Big crowd: Thousands came to Hagley Park yesterday to remember the February 22 earthquake and those who lost their lives one year ago to the day.
Tom Doudney & Christine de Felice
“YOU raise me up, sang the Christchurch Pops Choir as 185 monarch butterflies were released to remember those lost in the February 22, 2011, earthquake and to symbolise a new beginning for the city. Yesterday’s midday Christchurch earthquake memorial service in Hagley Park was attended by around 15,000 people who gathered to commemorate the city’s darkest day. The crowd stood quietly as the names of the 185 earthquake victims were slowly and solemnly read out, after which Catholic Bishop of Christchurch Barry Jones led two minutes’ silence from 12:51pm, the time the earthquake struck. The service was opened with a mihi whakatau (prayers of thanksgiving) by Ngai Tahu elder Henare Rakiihia Tau before
Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker took the stage to recall the events and praise the people of Christchurch for their resilience. “No city has ever been through anything like this before, there is no blueprint for this, he said. “We are seeing a resurgence of strength and spirit and we are learning a new way to do things. Student Volunteer Army founder and young New Zealander of the year Sam Johnson read out a passage from the book of Ecclesiastes before Prime Minister John Key read from Romans. Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae conveyed a message from Prince Charles before addressing the crowd. “Those who died are not forgotten, he said. “Their names are etched upon our memories and our memorials.
Clergy of various denominations and an interfaith group of young people offered prayers during the service and an address from United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was played on the big screen. After the service, Marian College student Caitlin Sherwood, 17, said she found the occasion sad. “It hadn’t hit me until all the names started getting called out, she said. “It was really, really emotional, I just started crying. Bryndwr resident Lynley Fuglestad, a piano teacher at Selwyn House School, said the service was very moving. “It was very special to be amongst such a wide range of people from Christchurch. I’ve just walked up from school and that’s where I was a year ago.

Gold medal awarded to Christchurch CHRISTCHURCH was awarded a gold medal as part of yesterday’s earthquake commemorations. As the city’s representative, Mayor Bob Parker was presented with the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand’s gold medal at the Christchurch Earthquake Awards ceremony by the Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae, who is the patron
“Many volunteers acted without regard for their own safety in frightening and dangerous situations. People put their lives at risk to help fellow workers, friends and complete strangers. “The society considers that in these exceptional circumstances, these selfless acts of bravery should be recognised by the special award of a gold medal.”
of the society. “This is the first gold medal awarded by the society since the Wahine disaster in 1968 and so is very significant. It recognises the outstanding acts of bravery and humanity by many people who selflessly assisted others immediately following the February 22, 2011 earthquake,” the society’s president, Austin Forbes QC, said.
Mayor Bob Parker said he was honoured to accept the gold medal on behalf of those who put their lives at risk to assist others. “The awarding of the gold medal honours the many people who did extraordinary acts of bravery without thinking of themselves,” he said.

THE SOLEMN ringing of the Peace Bell by a Japanese student to acknowledge friends lost in the CTV building collapse along with the tying of hope wishes to a gum tree were highlights of a commemorative event at the Botanic Gardens yesterday morning. The event was attended by about 100 people including dignitaries from Israel, China and the United States. Former Kings College language student Miyumi Asakawa returned to Christchurch from Japan to tell her story and to pay her respects to close friends who died in the collapse of the CTV building Ms Asakawa, 34, was out of the building buying lunch when the earthquake struck. She hoped the ringing of the Peace Bell would honour the spirit of those who died and bring peace and healing to the people of Christchurch. Riccarton resident Belinda Carter, who lost a close friend in the CTV building collapse, said the day was very difficult for her but she wanted to attend all the events.
“In some ways it seems like it was just yesterday but in other ways it was so long ago. “There are so many things going through my mind today. Southshore resident Rosalie Stuwart attended the event to pay her respects to the Israeli students who died and was impressed by the peaceful nature of the service. “My wish is that we can all live in peace. “I have many Israeli friends and they always love coming to the gardens so it was important for me to attend this service. Karen Delautour, of Avonhead, was among those who tied a wish of hope to an enormous gum tree. “My wish is for Christchurch to be rebuilt as a sustainable city. “I think it’s important for everyone to mark the day in their own way. Barbara Harding was in Switzerland when the earthquake struck and said she wanted to honour her son’s close friend who died in the earthquake by throwing petals into the Avon
River. “It has brought up all sorts of emotions for me since I wasn’t actually here on the day but it has been lovely to be able to do something special. “My son and his friend were so close and I’m remembering all the fun times they spent together. “It’s good to see people reflecting on what has happened today and at the same time to see people smiling and feeling positive about the future.

IT was a sad day in the city yesterday as we all remembered the February 22, 2011, earthquake tragedy. As thoughts went back to the national memorial service in the North Hagley Park last year, there was a feeling of déjà vu for the commemoration service in the park this time round. Various dignitaries spoke and I’m sure the words were a comfort for all those are traumatised and suffering still. There was a sense, however, that people were now looking forward. Yes remembering those who have gone, but also perhaps focusing more on the future. I talked briefly to Avondale resident Colleen Hughes (pictured) at the civic service in Hagley Park. What prompted me to speak to her was seeing the t-shirt she was
wearing. The t-shirt was red and black, she wore red shoes too and black trousers. That is real Canterbury loyalty I thought. And the message on the t-shirt caught my eye. Christchurch written in a heart and the words: my heart is here. I think that goes for a vast number of people. We’re here, we’re staying. Colleen said her home had some damage and her street had received more than its share of liquefaction. She remained undaunted. “I think it was brilliant,” she said of the commemoration. “It’s acknowledging what the tragedy was for a lot of people and showing the rest of us care. I consider myself very lucky I’m not one of them.” And, as to her future? “I’m staying,” she said. Christchurch is where I was born and brought up. It’s my city.”

POLISH-born Erwin Polczak says he feels “very good” about receiving a Christchurch Earthquake Award at the civic commemoration on yesterday “because I like to help people”. Mr Polzack, 37, was given the award for his bravery on February 22, 2011 when he rescued four people trapped under rubble outside the OK Gift Shop in the central city. Mr Polczak was getting squashed with each aftershock as he worked with a crowbar, brooms, and other tools to free people and only stopped helping “when the police came”. After the February quake, Mr Polczak worked as a civilian volunteer with the police, delivering food supplies to the red zone. “I give out meals and sometimes help for 12 to 16 hour days at a time,” he said. Mr Polczak has lived and worked in New Zealand for three years and has applied for residency. A carpenter, Chris Nutfield, received an earthquake award for his bravery at the Pyne Gould Corporation (PGC) building on February 22. “Everyone did what they could that day,” he said. “I don’t think hero is the word to use.” On that day, he was working on a fit-out of a building opposite the PGC building.
“We saw it (the PGC building) come down in front of us.” At first, he and his workmates evacuated people from the building where they were, among them nine disabled persons, and then they hurried to help at the PGC building. Volunteering his services to the fire service head at the scene, Mr Nutfield climbed onto the ruined building and spent the next four and a half hours working to free three women in a toilet block on the third floor. “I had to climb into holes where the women were. The first rescue took one and a half to Recognised: Erwin Polczak is among two hours. She was going through a range of Christchurch’s earthquake award recipients. emotions – grief, disbelief.” Aftershocks continued as the rescue went on and he said a cubicle was the only thing preventing the concrete floors from squashing the women. Sirens going off and the sound of helicopters overhead, which drowned out the cries of those calling for help, made the work difficult, he said. “I only did four hours; the real heroes were the ones, the firemen and urban search and rescue, who stayed on that night.” The list of earthquake award winners include Joe Pohio, who died on the day.

‘Privilege’ to help, rescue and rebuild Samantha Early
A MAN who helped rescue a woman and child from City Mall during the February 22 earthquake says it has been a privilege to reinvigorate the area as a member of the design team for the Restart project. At 12.51pm on Tuesday, February 22, 2011, architectural graduate Jason Cheyne was leaving the mall after buying his lunch from the Trocadero Bakery. He was underneath the Bridge of Remembrance when the quake struck. “The actual arch was swinging and gyrating around…after the quake finished, I looked with shock as what was this huge dust cloud filling the mall. It was quite an incredible sight, everyone seemed stunned and was standing staring in awe of what just happened.” He made his way back in to the mall and came across a woman trapped under a fallen canopy. He joined a group of men helping pull blocks of masonry off her. “At first, we could only make out part of her body, but after pulling some of the building away, we found she was pinned behind a large concrete and brick wall; we had to get a piece of a beam and kind of lever the masonry off
her and at that stage, we found there was a small child beneath her.” Aware of the need to keep the woman still in case her back was broken, she was kept where she was until an ambulance arrived while one of the other men rushed the child to hospital. “After we had helped that lady, it became apparent that it actually wasn’t really a job for me to do. I was becoming increasingly concerned about my own family, so at that point I left the mall.” Weeks after the quake, he and his wife, Alex, managed to contact the woman and meet up with her, the child, and their family. They have since kept in touch. Mr Cheyne said it was a real privilege to be involved with the design of the Restart Mall in his role at the Buchan Group and it helped him come to terms with what he had seen and felt. “Having been there to see all the pain, to see the anguish and almost terror that many people experienced on that day, it was really important to be part of a new beginning, to help change people’s perception of what the city is and what the city can be in the future.”

Go and volunteer, Johnson urges Christine de Felice
FOLLOWING the Student Volunteer Army’s positive contribution to the community in the wake of the Christchurch earthquakes, organiser Sam Johnson is encouraging more people to get involved in volunteer work. This could be through their local church or other community groups, he said. Named as Young New Zealander of the Year for his student army efforts, Mr Johnson said one of the biggest things to come out of the work done by the volunteer army was that it “created a culture change where the value of young people in the community was recognised”. “It showed that young people are so energetic and can get things done without being held up by things like council and community meetings. They just turned up, we fed them, provided music, and they had fun.” Mr Johnson said it was “very humbling” to
be recognised and exciting to have volunteer team members with him at the awards dinner in Auckland and to have their work recognised. The team Sam Johnson members were Jason Pemberton, who works for the Volunteer Army Foundation, Laura Campbell, who was heavily involved with the call centre for the volunteer army in February, Jonas Bergler, “our IT guru who designed the system to make the whole thing work”, and Nathan Durkin from the White Elephant Trust, which partnered with the volunteer army.
Community groups offered native plants TREES for Canterbury (TFC) wants to give away 5000 native plants which will bring the number of native plants planted or donated to the community to more than 700,000. “Although we have all suffered from the devastating year that was 2011, we are again ready to run our March giveaway of young native plants,” TFC manager Steve Bush said. “ We hope that it will be of assistance to as many groups as possible. “The community giveaway programme is open to community organisations so they can obtain New Zealand native plants for their school and/or community project. This is for schools, preschools, community groups, church groups, or projects on land with public access, etc. If it is
community based we would like to assist.” The organisation’s Charlesworth Street nursery produces in excess of 100,000 native plants each year. TFC makes it easy for groups to apply for free plants, Mr Bush said. They should write a letter including all details of the group, a contact person and phone number. Applicants need to advise TFC of their needs, such as whether they need large or low-growing shrubs or trees or perhaps groundcovers, numbers of plants required, and the conditions where they will be planted. Letters should be sent to Trees For Canterbury, P.O. Box 19-883, Christchurch 8241 before March 31.
Red Cross expert in town AUSTRALIAN Red Cross recovery coordinator Kate Brady was among New Zealand Red Cross volunteers at yesterday’s earthquake anniversary memorial services. Ms Brady was the recovery co-ordinator for the 2009 Victorian bush fires, and has studied recovery efforts and anniversaries for September 11, Hurricane Katrina, and other significant events. She said the Australian Red Cross had noticed substance abuse, violence, and relationships starting to fragment after disasters. There could be an increase in physical illnesses once the adrenaline, which
has been keeping people going, stops. Australian research showed post-traumatic stress affects around 10 percent of those directly involved in a disaster, but with a sudden and destructive event like an earthquake, the occurrence could be up to 30 percent. Some could develop depression and anxiety, and it was important for them to seek help, Ms Brady said. It could take at least five years for most people to recover emotionally from the disaster. However, she stressed that most people recover well.

Helping red-zoners convert history into art Gina McKenzie
WHEN artist Sarah Brown moved from England to Christchurch 20 years ago, she was drawn to the city’s beautiful homes and gardens and now she wants to help red zoners take a piece of their homes with them by creating miniature artworks from household treasures. “I felt so sad about people losing their homes and wanted to find a way for them to take a physical part of their home with them when it’s time to move on.” Ms Brown had been collecting material from demolition sites around the city and from a friend who lived in the Avon Loop when she hit upon the idea to expand her search to other red zoned suburbs. “I wanted to make it more about local people, especially those who are finding it hard to let go of their homes. “By collecting precious items and transforming them into art, I can create a way for people to keep the past alive.” Old wallpaper, lino, and roofing iron are some of Ms Brown’s favourite mediums and she has a special interest in older intricate designs. “I have a real passion for the beautiful patterns, colours, and textures of wallpaper that you find in older homes. “Sometimes you find layers of designs, which can be steamed apart to reveal new treasures.” Ms Brown hoped that redzoned Christchurch residents would contact her so she could create a piece of art to preserve their memories. “I would come to their homes and assess the material then make a miniature artwork for a small donation. “It will be something more than art and

almost a spiritual journey.” Ms Brown hopes to work on the art project for a year and then hold an exhibition, which would be a tribute to the history of Christchurch’s red zoned neighbourhoods. “I feel a real need to do this to preserve history before it disappears, and also to help people save part of their homes.” Anyone interested in participating in Ms Brown’s art project can contact her by phoning 03 366 8801 or emailing sarahpudding@hotmail.com.

MAIREHAU HIGH SCHOOL ENCOURAGING EXCELLENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY OLLIE & SIMON
Harry Romana H R Principal
At the commencement of any new school year, there is a wonderful fe feeling of anticipation and expectation. I have had the opportunity tto listen to students, staff, members of the public, Ministry of EEducation officials, and the community on the continued positive d direction of Mairehau High School. P People have talked about how clean our school environment looks, aand how well our students wear their uniform. This illustrates the h huge sense of pride that students, teachers and parents have for M Mairehau High School. Students are more engaged with their le learning; it’s a fun place to be, and teachers have built positive re relationships with students. Our new Year 9 students have settled w well into their learning, and they have smiles on their faces. M Mairehau High School’s overall academic achievement in the re recent National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) q qualification is outstanding. This is what the New Zealand Q Qualifications Authority is saying about our school; isn’t this fa fantastic! O Our preliminary results in Level 1 are higher than national indicators fo for all schools in the country. This is a significant achievement. M Mairehau High School is doing something right. We are happy to be part of this positive shift to improve educational outcomes for our students. There is a real sense of shared values, beliefs and purpose in students. Our students are talking about achievement and they
want to achieve. Students of Mairehau High School want to engage in education. There are plenty of opportunities for students to demonstrate leadership potential. We have our senior student executive team, and our student trustee, Madeleine Williams, is a valued member of our board. At many levels of our school, students have a voice, students are listened to, and their opinions count. Mairehau High School is a flexible and dynamic school. We are determined to meet the learning needs of all students. At Mairehau High School, we value people. Take an opportunity to walk through our school gates. There are three flag poles. We proudly display two New Zealand national flags. This week the South African national flag is also raised, side by side with the New Zealand flags. In fact we have 29 different national flags, representing each of the different nationalities in our school. Our school is a real reflection of New Zealand culture. We believe that we are a school of choice for our community. The evidence from national indicators report on our school achievement. These successes are indisputable. If you are a parent looking for a quality education for your child, then visit Mairehau High School. View for yourself what we have to offer. I close by wishing our students, staff, parents and community an enjoyable and safe 2012.

Ollie & Simon take Calculus at University Two of our outstanding students from Year 13 (2011) were given the opportunity to take a year long calculus course at the University of Canterbury. The course is especially designed for Year 13 students who excel at Mathematics. Ollie Taylor and Simon Smith, as expected, made the most of this opportunity and excelled on the course. We are very pleased to report that both Ollie and Simon passed this course with ‘A’ grades. This is a fantastic achievement for both of them. Both boys were at University of Canterbury for one full day per week, while still working on their NCEA Level 3 here at school. Simon said it gave him a great perception of university life and a sense of what the courses are about. Although he did say he was ‘pleasantly surprised’ with his ‘A’ grade, he also said that it felt pretty good! Our congratulations to you both. 2012 Year 13 students, Luca Le Fevre and Daniel Watson, will be participating in the same course this year.
Gifted & Talented
SPECIAL PRESENTATION On Tuesday 22nd of November family and friends of the Year 9 and 10 Gifted and Talented students were privy to a special presentation of their work. Each student was given an opportunity to participate in a year-long project of their choice. We were taken to the streets of Venice at the height of a masquerade ball, able to ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ over the glittery mask creations, had our resistance tempted by a collection of gorgeous culinary treats, straight from China, and were lucky enough to watch a short film by budding directors and animators. Maria Brown and Adam Joblin hosted the Year 9 and 10 projects respectively, introducing each pupil. The evening was extremely successful as each student stepped up to present his or her work with a short speech and an example of their hard work.
October 6 was another colourful day on our school calendar. It was school athletics day, or Mairehau Games, and students and staff dressed in their waka colours – Waka Ama (green), Waka Katea (blue), Tau Rapa (red) and Tau Ihu (yellow). Each of our colours represents the four sides of the Waka and our school crest, and signifies the educational and life-long journey our students have embarked on. There was a great atmosphere all round and new athletic abilities were discovered. After lunch the students were involved in another round of games called ‘Top Town Games’ . Competitors and spectators alike, had lots of laughs and fun. It was a wonderful day which was thoroughly enjoyed by all and we are looking forward to another round of Mairehau Games later on in February.
The teachers and parents involved enjoyed the evening tremendously. It was a rare insight into the interests of each young person. The Year 9 and 10 deans were very happy with the effort their students had put into the projects. It was an important learning curve for parents, teachers, and, most of all students. The Year 9 students who participated in the Gifted and Talented programme in 2011 were required to come up with an activity that could include working with the community. Sam Hapuku and Adam Koch decided to run a series of Rugby workshops which included drills and games. They wrote to the principals of Mairehau and Queenspark Primary Schools to get permission to work with a range of year groups at the schools. The boys worked on a booklet which provided the students with the instructions for each of the rugby related activities. On the day Adam and Sam took full responsibility for cocoordinating the equipment and for managing the students. The young students were extremely engaged and everyone enjoyed the experience.
Her selected project was to draw and construct then sculpture something that would reflect New Zealand flora and fauna on it.

Endometriosis support
A
new support group has just been launched in Christchurch to assist the es mated 11,500 girls and women in the city who are living with endometriosis. Endometriosis is a chronic condi on affec ng one in 10 females worldwide where the ssue similar to the lining of the uterus is found outside the uterus and causes an inflammatory reac on which leads to the forma on of scar ssue and adhesions. Endometriosis New Zealand support network coordinator Kim Laurenson said she was thrilled with the turnout to the launch event on Sunday evening. “It was wonderful to see so many new faces and to look forward to helping women in the Canterbury region find new ways of coping with the condi on. “It can take up to 10 years for someone to diagnosed with endometriosis and once they are diagnosed it isn’t an easy condi on to understand.” Ms Laurenson hoped the Christchurch support group would be able to reach out to all girls and women suffering from endometriosis and allow them to find someone to talk to who is going through a similar experience. “Endometriosis can be a very lonely condi on so we’re aiming to take away some of that by linking people and normalising it.” The group is planning various events including walks, movie nights and regular quarterly mee ngs with guest speakers. Ms Laurenson said the group was extremely grateful to the support provided by the Oxford Clinic. “We’re so lucky to have such a cu ng edge clinic to support us and the research they are doing into endometriosis will help all of us be er understand the condi on.”
Symptoms
March is Endometriosis Awareness month and to raise awareness of the condi on Endometriosis New Zealand is hos ng an inaugural breakfast. The breakfast will be held on March 8 which is also Interna onal Women’s Day and all proceeds will go to support Speaker: Simon Jones, the charitable organisa on. Gynaecologist Endometriosis New Zealand chief execu ve Deborah Bush (QSM) said she was delighted that New Zealand women will be some of the first in the world to celebrate Interna onal Women’s Day and also to raise funds for an excellent cause.
“People are becoming more aware of the condi on but we s ll have a long way to go and anything that raises awareness is very posi ve.”
The most common symptom of endometriosis is pelvic pain. The pain is usually associated with the menstrual cycle, however women with endometriosis may also experience pain at other mes during the month. •pain with periods (dysmenorrhoea) •bowel problems like bloa ng, diarrhoea, cons pa on, pain with bowel movements, painful wind •painful intercourse (dyspareunia) •sub-fer lity or infer lity • redness and low energy •pain in other places such as the lower back •pain at other mes like with ovula on •premenstrual syndrome (PMS). This might make you feel moody, emo onal or irritable abnormal menstrual bleeding pain before or with urina on, recurrent urinary tract infec ons (UTI’s) or inters al cys s (IC) Discomfort with periods is o en normal, distress is never normal. If your period is affec ng your lifestyle in this way, it is important for you to seek help and find out why. Source: Endometriosis New Zealand resource ‘A Prac cal Guide’ 2010

WHAT do you do with yourself when you feel down? Do you succumb to feeling like a vic m, blaming someone else, blaming the situa on, blaming life? Take some me to explore and allow your feelings. It might be a bit scary and you might wonder where it might lead you. Just know that the feelings in your body are energy flowing around inside. When you allow yourself to feel inside, then you can be just aware of the feeling, without the need to act on it, without the need to analyse the story about why you are feeling the way you are. Sounds complicated? Try it. Separate the feeling from the reasoning about why you are feeling that way. You might be surprised at how you can feel and then let go. Powerful and effective massage
New seasons stocks arriving weekly
K
aren Hann at The Massage Therapy Clinic prac ces a system of bodywork developed by Australian Naturopath Brandon Raynor. The Raynor technique is generally recognised as one of the most powerful and eec ve forms of massage therapy today. This style of massage goes beyond the realms of what most people consider to be the conďŹ nes of a massage treatment. It not only covers the muscles of the body, the skeletal system, and the subtle energy systems of the body, it also assists a lot of emo onal and psychological condi ons. It has evolved from a combina on of dierent styles from around the world, which include therapeu c massage, deep ssue, acupressure, Swedish, Hawaiian, remedial, hand and foot reexology. Raynor massage is not performed as a rou ne massage. The goal is to ďŹ nd any residual tension or blockage in the body when it is at rest and get rid of it. If a person has muscle ghtness in an area when they aren’t using it, this is called residual tension. Another important concept of this form of massage is that the source of some of the residual tension in the body can be emo onal or stress-related. Karen believes in trea ng the body as one holis c organism.
Getting to know you: Karen Hann uses the Raynor technique, which deals with your physical, mental, and pyschological needs.
Deep relaxation: Ease all stress away at The Massage Therapy Clinic at 841 Old Tai Tapu Rd, Tai Tapu.
Dealing with one part of the body in isola on will not be as eec ve as dealing with the whole person. For some people, good massage may be uncomfortable, but clients are encouraged to breathe deeply into their bellies during the treatment to help release ght muscles and to allow any stored emo ons to come out. As the layers of tension peel away, their bodies should feel a lot be er, have more mobility, and generally feel more relaxed. Karen also places a lot of emphasis on important parts of the body that are o en neglected by tradi onal therapists such as the abdomen, the sacrum, the hips and feet, hands, and head.
These areas tend to hold a lot of stagna on and freeing them up will generally have a great beneďŹ t not just to the areas concerned, but to the whole being. Clients usually require more than one treatment. When enough deep massage has brought them to a point of having all their muscular tension released, then they are ready for maintenance massage. Maintenance appointments are scheduled weekly or monthly, but only far enough apart so that the client will always reach total body relaxa on by the end of each appointment. Contact Karen by phoning 329 6467. The Massage Therapy Clinic is located at 841 Old Tai Tapu Rd, Tai Tapu.

The bloom goes on
F
Faithful memory: A colourful posy to remember my late good friend, Joe Pohio, who died in the February quake.
lower on! Over the past year, more so than ever, I have been magne sed by the power of plants and, in par cular, flowers. Flowers provide me with so much joy and they always seem so willing to share their seemingly endless energy. Their ability to germinate, bloom, flourish, and fruit gives me so much pleasure, it’s almost ridiculous. I find it very reassuring to be able to grow and harvest my own food, show and help new gardeners produce their own crops, watch the birds enjoy the garden, visit the botanical gardens, feel the sun on my face fairly normal ac vi es. These things, some mes in the past, may have felt a li le pedestrian and I, too, took them for granted; but now, a er living through such significant life altering events, they become more important and are even more rewarding than ever. Plants are helping the garden city re-build as well as ourselves. Let them shower your life with hope and reassurance through this next period. I lost a par cularly special friend on February 22, 2011, Joe Pohio. He was an absolute dynamo, in more ways than one, but gardening wasn’t his thing, although he did try to grow coriander once. The emp ness I feel at mes is overwhelming, I have to remind myself it’s not just me who lost him, but everyone. Sharing grief isn’t easy, I really struggle with it, but I know it’s a necessary process. I think of him o en when I look at what I planted in his memory on my pa o. I have two large barrels, each planted with the same thing. Rose Faithful Friend with Sweet

Pea ‘Singing the Blues’ twinning around the rose stems. Faithful friend has rarely been without a flower since it started blooming in November and the sweet peas are going nuts; I have picked bunches and bunches of them for inside and to give away. On the anniversary of his passing, both these flowers will be blooming, a living reminder of such a special person. If flowers can bloom again, then so can we. Take me to enjoy what’s flowering at the moment, whether it be in the botanical gardens, a park, your own garden, or via a trip to The Ellerslie Flower Show in a few weeks. Soak up the plants’ passion, enjoy the moment, and share the joy.

French Film Festival should delight cinema lovers Gina McKenzie
FILM lovers will be able to feast on a selection of the finest recent French releases at the sixth annual French Film Festival, which kicks off at Hoyts Northlands on Wednesday. Festival director Sarah Reese said she felt it was extremely important to open the festival in Christchurch after the 2011 festival was cancelled due to the earthquake. “We were actually just finishing the final touches at the Regent Theatre when the earthquake struck. I had just taken a photo when I was thrown backwards. “It breaks my heart knowing the Regent is now an empty piece of land in the middle of the city’s broken heart, but we should still celebrate the joy of cinema with our families and friends, and be transported to a faraway place for one and a half hours.” Ms Reese said the line-up of films included in this year’s selection encompassed a wide range of genres from drama to comedy, documentary, and family films. “I chose films that show what it means to be French and I really hope that everyone who attends will enjoy watching something different that offers a chance to escape from everyday life.” Ms Reese named four films as festival highlights; the opening night movie Declaration of War, The War of the Buttons, Jo’s Boy, and Le Skylab. Declaration of War is a powerful drama that focuses on a couple dealing with a sudden change in their lives and is based on real-life events experienced by director Valerie Donzelli. The War of the Buttons is an adaptation of Louis Perguad’s classic 1912 novel, which was a huge success at the French box office last year. Jo’s Boy is a comedy that focuses on the life of a famous French rugby player’s son growing up in rural France. Popular French actress Julie Delpy embarks on her third foray into directing with Le Skylab, which is a

nostalgic look at Delpy’s own childhood. The film is set in late 1970s Brittany and focuses on events that take place during a family gathering. The festival, which is run by Alliance Française, has a special opening night event on Wednesday evening. Tickets for the gala opening are $25, which includes French-themed drinks and nibbles, L’Oréal goodie bags, and the New Zealand première screening of Declaration of War. The event begins at 5.45pm for a 6.30pm screening. Tickets for the gala opening and festival films are available from Hoyts Northlands or online at www.hoyts.co.nz

Murray Johnson, Metro JAB Chairman has been quoted as saying “Although all clubs had their successful teams, it was the Christchurch club that was probably the most successful JAB club last season. Some of the matches between their JAB sides were like Test Matches. It was very intense.” Richie McCaw has cemented himself in Canterbury rugby history and indeed New Zealand rugby history while playing for our great club, the oldest rugby playing club in New Zealand. Following in Richie’s footsteps is Crusader Ma Todd who is making his mark

Young Opawa fan gives a toss for cricket SEVEN-year-old Tom Harrison won the chance to join the Canterbury Wizards and Proteas captains for the coin toss, which decides which team bats and which team bowls to open the recent Twenty20 match at Hagley Oval. Tom’s grandfather, Alan Harrison, who coaches Tom’s Sydenham Cricket Club team, hadn’t told his grandson he had entered him into the National Bank competition, so it was a complete surprise when the call came through. “The whole family is cricket mad. We all went to the game. It was wonderful to see Tom out there on the pitch with cricket greats. It reminded him that good things in life happen, too.” The win was some good news for the family, who recently found out that their house will be demolished due to quake damage. According to his grandfather, Tom had been practising his coin toss technique the whole of the day prior to the game and during the next morning, and was very pleased with the

outcome. He was particularly happy that he only had to toss it once and that the result came up tails, which meant Peter Fulton was given the decision to bat or field. After the toss, Tom said, “That was the most exciting moment of my life.”
LAST weekend I headed over to Melbourne to tick off another event on my bucket list. I have been a big fan of the great rocker and professional showman Rod Stewart. Sure I wanted to see him live and he is now 67 years of age and I’m fast catching him up. The other factor that influenced my decision to head over was the venue. Rod was appearing at the Rod Laver Tennis Arena, a venue I had never been to but seen on TV with the Aussie Tennis Opens. Despite the heat with the roof being closed, Rod gave it 200 percent for over two hours with all the hits I wanted to hear. The other highlight was to be in the arena. It really is an outstanding stadium. We sat on the centre court which will be the closest I will ever get to that achievement! So easy to get to, (because it is right in the city), the staff welcomed you inside and hoped we enjoyed the event; it was really easy to get to your seat and leaving was just a breeze. How different from the New Zealand experience! As a bonus the news broke towards the end of the week that the latest racing sensation, Black Caviar was going to race on the Saturday to try and make it 19 wins out of 19 starts. Not only that but she was going to run at the legendary Flemington Racecourse. The Melbourne Cup has long been called the race that stops a nation and it also is a huge day over this side of the ditch. Trust me the occasion did not disappoint. What a racecourse, what mind blowing

Visiting stockcars ready to rumble STOCKCAR drivers from around the country will travel to Canterbury this weekend to contest the inaugural Rumble by the River at AmPro Tools Woodford Glen Speedway. Modelled on Woodford Glen’s super stock show Battle of the Stocks, Friday and Saturday nights racing features 34 cars in every heat. The championship format pairs each outof-town driver with a local and the pairing with the highest combined points at the end of Saturday night’s racing will be the inaugural Rumble by the River Champions. Notable entries include last season’s New Zealand under 23 Stockcar Championship runner-up Mitchell Hill, of Palmerston North, and young Nelson sensation Adam Hall. The draw for partners won’t be made until Friday, but local racer Ivan McPhail, fresh from winning the Remembrance Championships two weeks ago, was confident he could be in the mix with the frontrunners. Racing starts at 7pm on both Friday and Saturday nights. Further information at www.woodfordglen.co.nz
Up for it: The car driven by local racer Ivan McPhail, who will be part of the action at Rumble by the River.

The performance was to take place over the race finish line at 4pm on Saturday, February 11 as part of the festivities around the event’s 30th year. According to a spokesperson for Coast to Coast promoter Challenge Events, the Red Checkers team was unable to perform without one of its aircraft and the show had to be cancelled.

facilities, what a buzz with 30,000 in attendance. The public are treated as special guests. All the stables were open to the public to allow them to get up close and personal with the horse flesh. The public toilets were up there with a five star hotel and the fashions had to be seen to be believed. The strangest thing to me was that when you got up close to Black Caviar she just looked like any other horse. No real x factor, but when she ran, boy is she something else. A true champion galloper I have not seen the like of. All in all, what a great weekend. I even felt younger as I flew home!

‘We’re doing it in their honour’ Mary Anne Jackson is the receptionist for CTV and Mainland Press. She talks to editor Chris Tobin of her miraculous escape from the CTV building on February 22, 2011. “I FEEL I was carried out, like someone lifted me out,” says Canterbury Television (CTV) receptionist Mary Anne Jackson. With the city and nation remembering the earthquake nightmare of February 22, 2011, yesterday, it was a time for Ms Jackson, a mother figure to CTV staff, to remember how she survived the collapse of the CTV building. Tears flowed as she showed a bracelet charm given to her by one of her three children. Engraved on the bracelet charm are the words: “On the wings of an angel.” “All three, Oliver, Adam and Amanda, said nana carried me out,” she said. Nana was Ms Jackson’s mother Hilary, who died 15 months before the quake. At 12.51pm on February 22, as the CTV building blasted apart, Ms Jackson ran for her life. Some people have estimated the building toppled in only 12 seconds. The general opinion is that it was definitely less than a minute. Sixteen of Ms Jackson’s CTV work colleagues died and she was the only CTV staff member in the building at the time to survive. The total death toll in the building was 115. “It’s still fresh in my mind,” she said. “I was
the lucky one who got out. I often lie in bed at night thinking about them. I hope it was quick.” Among the CTV staff members who died were managing director Murray Wood and presenters Jo Giles and Donna Manning. Ms Jackson had just been into Mr Wood’s office with all three a couple of minutes before she came downstairs to the reception area. “I was just hanging up the phone when the quake happened. I was holding the bench – the noise was horrific; glass was coming in; the staircase was moving backwards and forwards. “I decided to run, and ran. I still don’t know how. It felt like the end of the world. I knew the building was breaking up; the fourth floor was collapsing and bringing everything down.” She ran across Madras Street to Blackwell Motors. “I stood there in shock shivering, an absolute mess, shaking like a leaf. People were running in all directions, people were hysterical and in shock. “The Inland Revenue staff were coming out and running down the middle of the road to Latimer Square.”
Then Ms Jackson saw CTV colleagues Tom Hawker and Penelope Spencer in the CTV carpark. Both had left the CTV building to get lunch and were coming back across the road when the quake struck. “I was so pleased to see them. They ran over and we hugged each other standing there awhile in shock. Then Sacha (Stevens, another CTV staff member) came running along from Les Mills’ gym sobbing and hysterical. “Jo Giles’ youngest daughter Olivia arrived crying. She worked not far away. ‘Is my mother in there?’ she asked. I didn’t tell her. Then we hugged her. Jo Didham’s father arrived (Jo Didham was a CTV advertising salesperson), running along the street. ‘Is my daughter there?’ I said I didn’t know. She was in the building. She had two beautiful girls. “Emergency services arrived and we got moved on. People in suits were running up the rubble; an Asian guy popped his head up with two children. They ran up and got them out. We moved to Latimer Square.” Thousands gathered in the square, possibly as many as 5000, where Ms Jackson said the ground “was going up and down like jelly”

with the aftershocks. After several trying hours she managed to gain a ride to her home at Mt Pleasant, which she found severely damaged. Her family was frantically worried about her but she managed to contact her partner and children to put their minds at rest. “It’s been devastating,” she said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families. It (the anniversary) brings it all back – although it never goes.” Having CTV survive and come back on air has helped her, but how does she cope? “I’ve got the drive; if you stop you fall over and working with familiar faces and friends makes it easier. “We’ve had a lot of support and tributes from all over New Zealand and the world. “Those who have joined us since the quake have slotted in really well and been a huge support to us and Mainland Press has been good supporters.” She says knowing so many at CTV had died provided an added motivation to keep the television channel operating. “We’re doing it in their honour.”

Memorial: The 16 CTV staff members who died in the February earthquake are depicted on a plaque outside the studio.
Making a statement with flowers FLOWERS were placed in road cones around the city and the world yesterday as a special way to remember the February earthquake that claimed 185 lives a year ago. The idea came from a Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT ) design tutor Henry Sunderland who drew the cartoon (far right) and placed it on Facebook. “There’ve been well over 400 shares (on Facebook) – that’s a lot of people,” he said on Monday. “People will be doing it in Auckland, Brisbane, London; it’s pretty amazing.” He has formed a 22 February round cone photos group on Facebook asking people to send in their photographs and schools have taken up the project although he has not contacted them to do so. ”Like everyone else I’ve a tale to tell of February 22; I know people who lost their lives,” he said. “I want to make a statement, I want Christchurch to shine, to bring a smile and be positive.” Mr Sunderland’s students held an exhibition of road cone sculptures built around a Christmas theme that was displayed in the Botanic Gardens. It proved popular and the latest flower road cone project was an extension of that. He said the campaign was not about him: “it’s about people expressing themselves.”
