Eastern elderly fear isolation Gina McKenzie

OVER 150 vulnerable elderly eastern suburbs residents risk becoming isolated shut-ins after the Wainoni Methodist Church and community centre on Avonside Drive was placed in the residential red zone two weeks ago. The church was one of 213 additional Canterbury properties placed in the red zone, which puts the building’s future in doubt. While the building was declared structurally sound by the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera), the land on which it stands was deemed unsuitable for building and housing. Wainoni couple, Gary and Dot Grenfell, who are both in their 70s and attend programmes at the centre, believed closing the centre would leave vulnerable elderly in their neighbourhood isolated and unable to cope. “Some of them will just go to pieces. It’s the worst possible thing that could happen to older people living on their own. “The care and support that we have at the centre is like a circle of friends who look out for each other.

“If we aren’t there to look out for them who will be there when they need a friend to talk to or when they can’t cope and feel lonely?” For 82-year-old Dallington resident Janice Moss the news that her link to the outside world could be severed had been a devastating blow. “I live alone and without the church and community centre programmes I know I would grow old very quickly. “If you could see the looks on people’s faces when they come through the doors you’d know what I mean. “It’s like they’re coming home.” Wainoni Avonside Community Services coordinator Betty Chapman said the community centre and church would fight the red zoning ruling and try to save the building. “This place is so much more than just a community centre and a church. It’s a safe haven for the elderly who are the most vulnerable people in the city. “It’s our duty to make sure that they can live a full life with a purpose, especially in times like these where they have already lost so much.”

Hoping for a miracle: Wainoni Avonside Community Services coordinator Betty Chapman ties a wish of hope to a tree outside the red zoned Wainoni Methodist Church building. Mrs Chapman hopes the building can be saved so she can continue to operate her community centre, which caters for 150 vulnerable elderly living in the eastern suburbs. Photo: Gina McKenzie

CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER Thursday

A SCHEDULE for prioritising detailed engineering evaluations (DEEs) of all Christchurch City Council facilities from the Town Hall to public toilets will be considered for approval at today’s council meeting. The schedule, which covers almost 1000 council facilities, also shows when council reports are expected to be completed on some of the city’s major facilities including the Town Hall, expected in November; AMI Stadium, (May 2012); and QEII, (June 2013). It is expected to take until mid-2014 to complete all assessments. Council general manager of community services and facilities rebuild project sponsor Michael Aitken said minor repairs or other work could be carried out on some buildings as assessments continued. “To ensure we are able to make informed decisions about a building, it does not make sense to start doing significant repairs until after a DEE assessment is completed,” Mr Aitken said. “We also need to look at the types of facilities our community will need long term before committing to repairs or any other work on a building.” Major decisions on a facility and any proposed repairs to a heritage facility would go to the council for approval. Buildings are being prioritised for assessment according to a set of weighted criteria, which include buildings with high occupancy, that are of high significance to the community, are multi-storey, are built of certain materials or are of a certain age.

Heart Strings auction raises $111,000 SEVEN hand-made guitars commemorating the loss of life and buildings in the Christchurch earthquakes fetched a total of $111,000 at an auction in Christchurch at the weekend. The Heart Strings guitars were crafted by Bruce Pickering and were created using timber from important historical buildings that fell in the Christchurch earthquakes, including the Deans family

home of Homebush, the great hall at the Christchurch Art Centre, the Southern Blues Bar, a heritage residential home in Chester Street, Gunyah Lodge and the Ohinetahi homestead near Governors Bay. Among the auction winners were the owners of Christchurch’s Southern Blues Bar, Nigel Church and Leanna Christie, who successfully bid on the Southern Blues Bar guitar with plans

to feature it in their new bar when it is rebuilt. All the profits will go to the Christchurch arts community. An eighth guitar, named Kia Kaha, was built out of timber from the historical Lyttelton Time Ball building. A scroll holding the names of those who lost their lives has been laid to rest inside the guitar. The guitar has been featured at an exhibition in the Canterbury Museum.

Brothel likely to move

HOON HAY FAMILY HOME

Chris Tobin

A BROTHEL operating in a house on Papanui Road near the parish centre for St Mary’s Anglican Church will be given six weeks to relocate. If not, concerned residents in the area will meet to discuss what action they can take. A meeting of 50 residents on Saturday by a group called Families and Brothels Don’t Mix and the Merivale Precinct Society was advised by the landlady of the property that the brothel owner intended moving in the next few weeks. The brothel, known as Capri Lounge, has been operating since August last year. Christchurch City Council inspections and enforcement team manager Ann Columbus told the meeting that the council’s city plan could not limit the location of the brothel, only the level of business capacity. She said the brothel was operating within the city plan rules; the business owner was not a sex worker herself. From interviewing the business owner, Ms Columbus said she had learned three bedrooms were sub-leased in the building to three women, one of whom did not live there. All of the women worked in full-time jobs Monday to Friday. The brothel’s hours of operation were 6pm to 11pm with an average of two clients a night. The chair of the council’s prostitution working party, Cr Sue Wells, said the council had tried in 2004 to adopt a bylaw restricting small brothels from operating in suburbs. However, a trust took the council to the High Court and won.

“The council can’t eliminate what parliament decided,” she said. “I understand the operator is looking to move. That’s good; no-one is happy. The community has made it abundantly clear this is not a fit for this street and there’s no doubt in my mind that business won’t be there much longer; I don’t think it’s a viable business. I wish there was more protection the council could give you, but there isn’t.” She said there were “heaps of brothels” in places like Cashmere. It was when their existence came to the attention of neighbours that problems have emerged. Families and Brothels Don’t Mix spokesperson Amanda Cooper-Davies said she had seen some “pretty scary people and threatening people” in the neighbourhood since the brothel had opened. “We’ve been afraid to give our names,” she said. Chairperson of the Merivale Precinct Society Chris Aynsley said there was a feeling Merivale had “shifted to the other side”. Resident Peter Cooper said his concern was that a brothel could operate in a residential area; he had felt intimidated by the people coming to the area. Crs Jamie Gough and Sally Buck attended the meeting, which was chaired by the MP for Christchurch central, Nicky Wagner. Also there were the chairperson of the Fendalton Waimairi Community Board Val Carter and board member Faimeh Burke.

Three favourites return READERS in the Nor’west News, Southern View and Pegasus Bay News areas will notice that these papers have returned as liftouts in this issue of Mainland Press. It is quite a landmark day for us here at Mainland Press since these papers had all but disappeared ever since the February 22 earthquake last year. Another of our publications Bay Harbour News was knocked out by the quake for a time too but returned as a stand-alone paper in the middle of last year and has been published fortnightly ever since.

The three others were not revived until now. Add to this the fact that last week we launched an entirely new paper, Selwyn View, a fortnightly which covers the entire Selwyn district, and you can see we’re not standing back. Without blowing our trumpet, you could say we’re playing our role in the rebuild of this city and region. And with this in mind, it has been especially pleasing to see papers restarted in areas harshly affected by the earthquakes. Like you, we’re coming back.

Letter to the editor I COULD not agree more with Jo Kane (Mainland Press, February 23) regarding the use of inane buzzwords. Draw a line in the sand, walk the talk, do the hard yards, they all get used so frequently it’s like listening to a cracked record (or chipped CD ). One idiotic team leader (now there’s a misnomer if ever there was ) used to prattle on about living documents. Plain English is beyond

these self important, under educated jackasses. Another misused saying is “I’m over it.” The true meaning of this phrase means that it’s behind you, and it doesn’t worry you anymore. However, a lot of people mean it as I am sick to death of it and I’ve had a guts full. Why they misuse it I have no idea. R D Howe, New Brighton

Stay strong: Author Clare Erasmus hopes the message of hope contained in her book Kia Kaha, the Cathedral Mouse will encourage Cantabrians to stay positive. Photo: Gina McKenzie

Cathedral mouse offers hope A MESSAGE of hope for both the ChristChurch Cathedral and city is encapsulated in the book Kia Kaha, the Cathedral Mouse written by Cathedral Grammar teacher Clare Erasmus, which was launched at the school last night. In the months following last February’s earthquake, Mrs Erasmus wrote down her feelings on the damaged cathedral and eventually hit upon the idea of telling the story of the earthquake through the eyes of a mouse living in the cathedral. “I started getting my ideas down and suddenly the word “scuttle” popped into my mind and from there, the main character Kia Kaha the mouse was born.” Mrs Erasmus said former Dean Peter Beck inspired her to write the book with his courage and determination to carry on after the earthquakes. “He provided us all with guidance and hope following all the trauma of the earthquake and I wanted to create a book that would provide the same type of uplifting message for Christchurch residents. “This is the same message that Dean Beck delivered after the earthquakes and using a mouse makes it easier for children to relate to the ideas in the book.” Mr Beck said he was delighted by the message contained in the book, a copy of which was presented to him on his final day at Cathedral Grammar. “I really enjoyed reading the story. It’s a wonderful book with a positive message for young people.” Mrs Erasmus said she hoped Kia Kaha would continue his adventures in future titles. All profits from the sale of the book will be used to redevelop the ChristChurch Cathedral and Cathedral Grammar School. The book is $25 and copies can be purchased by contacting Linda Marsh on 03 365 0385 or emailing office@cathedralgrammar.school.nz.

Working hard for CTV families Samantha Early BEFORE February 22 last year, Peter Brown was settling into retirement after spending 13 years as a technical engineer with CTV. He and his wife Christine had rented out their house and moved into a caravan, planning to spend time helping at a Christian organisation in Oxford, Youth With A Mission (YWAM), then road tripping around the North Island. “But, of course, our lives, like everyone else’s on the day of the earthquake, changed dramatically,” he said. When Mr Brown was told the CTV building had collapsed, he went straight there. He spent that night helping police draw plans of the building and being with families who had come to Latimer Square, searching for their loved ones. “I was communicating with most of the families who had family members in the building, to make sure they had support. I guess things just evolved from there really.” A total of 16 CTV staff members died in the quake and in the days and months following, Mr Brown continued to support their families, attending police meetings, taking some of them to appointments, and helping establish the CTV Families Trust. He became involved with the Quake Families group and helped them get legal representation on the Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission. Last week, he received a Christchurch Earthquake Award for his service, an experience he described as humbling. “I did think what if I had been in the building?I hoped someone would have done something similar for my family.” He said as a Christian, he tried to think what Jesus would do in the situation. “I have a heart for people anyway. I lost my mother when I was nine; I lost a grandson when he was three, so I know in my heart what people go through.” He said he got strength from his relationship with God and the fact that he knew many other people were praying for him. Mr Brown has returned to work at CTV and keeps contact with all the Family help: Peter Brown received a Christchurch Earthquake Award at last families. He continues to live in the caravan. week’s February 22 commemorations for his service in helping the families “The families became the priority. They still are.” of CTV staff. Photo: Samantha Early

Weekend Gardener joins Mainland Press MAINLAND Press’ lifestyle division has been boosted further with the acquisition of popular magazine Weekend Gardener. The well-established national, fortnightly publication is a DIY magazine aimed at gardeners. Mainland Press managing director Pier Smulders said he was delighted to offer readers another publication. “We are delighted we have added Weekend Gardener to our family of publications and are committed to continuing to bring our dedicated and loyal readers a great read every fortnight packed full of helpful information. It’s a fantastic magazine with lots of potential and we will make sure it keeps getting better and better.” Corrections ON February 15, in the page one story ‘Help for hard-hit Edgeware, New Brighton’, Mainland Press referred to the “former Hardie & Thomson site.” Hardie & Thomson is still in fact operating from its Edgeware site, with only part of the building having been demolished. In last week’s issue, earthquake award winner Chris Nutsford was referred to as Chris Nutfield. The errors are regretted.

our christchurch Christchurch City Council news, events and information 1 March 2012

Earthquake repairs begin on community facilities Minor earthquake repairs are beginning this week on 46 community facilities owned by Christchurch City Council. The repairs are being carried out under the Council’s Facilities Rebuild project, which provides a framework for future decision making around all the buildings it owns. It is expected that repairs will be completed by the end of June. The facilities include toilet blocks and other buildings on a number of parks or reserves across Christchurch. The facilities that are undergoing repairs all have only minor cosmetic damage to the value of $5000. City Care has been contracted to do the work, which mainly includes fixing minor cracking and painting and will be covered by Council insurance.

General Manager Community Services and Facilities Rebuild Project Sponsor Michael Aitken says experienced assessors have checked the facilities to determine the repairs that are needed. “It’s fantastic to be able to get underway with repairs on some of our community facilities. We have been able to start repairs on these buildings because we have been able to more readily identify the type of damage that has occurred to them due to the fact that they are simple structures. “However, we face much more of a challenge with larger Council-owned buildings as we are carrying out Detailed Engineering Evaluations (DEEs), which are more intensive inspections, to gain a clearer picture of the level of damage they have sustained, and their capacity to

withstand future earthquakes. This must occur before we can even start thinking about repairs. “It can take up to eight weeks to carry out an engineering assessment of a building and it is expected it will take more than two years to carry out all the assessments needed. We understand our community is keen for some answers about facilities that are important to them, but we also need to look at the types of facilities that our community will need long term before committing ourselves to repairing a building.” For a list of facilities undergoing repairs, visit: Curator’s House on Rolleston Avenue before the earthquakes.

Milestone achievement for Council sewer upgrade Christchurch City Council has achieved a key milestone in its Major Sewer Upgrade, with final tunnelling work completed for the Western Interceptor pipeline development.

The Western Interceptor project is part of the Council’s Major Sewer Upgrade, a 15-year programme of wastewater projects costing more than $150 million. The Western Interceptor pipeline has now been tunnelled the full length of St Asaph Street, through

South Hagley Park and to the intersection of Blenheim Road and Dalgety Street, with completion of manholes, other additional sewer works and the reinstatement of roads scheduled for July 2012. Council Chief Executive Tony Marryatt says the fact that the tunnelling work is now complete, having undergone some temporary delays caused by the February, June and December 2011 earthquakes, reflects the determination of staff to ensure the project proceeds as quickly as possible as part of the recovery. Council City Water and Waste Manager Mark Christison says the recent achievement is significant in terms of enabling the other projects within the upgrade development to progress.

Final tunnelling work is completed on the Western Interceptor.

“The upgrade project is of major importance to the City’s sewer infrastructure and, on its completion, will help to relieve earthquake-damaged sewers, reduce wet weather overflows into the City’s rivers, and aid future development to the southwest of the city including new subdivisions encompassing more than 10,000 properties,” he says.

Council approves cost of repairs to Curator’s House The Council will move forward with repairs to the historic Curator’s House on Rolleston Avenue and contribute to the cost of strengthening the building to 67 percent of the New Building Standard (NBS). A building is considered to be earthquake prone at 33 percent of NBS.

“It’s an iconic Central City venue which draws people to this part of the city and to the Botanic Gardens. It’s really important to get venues like this reopened and the decision is a step in the right direction towards the revitalisation and rebuild of our Central City and it will serve as a boost to the hospitality and tourism industries.”

Insurance will fund $544,491 of the cost of repair and Council will pay $205,267 towards strengthening. Christchurch City Council Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button says that the Curator’s House serves as a reminder and evidence of our past history.

Damage includes minor cracking of stone and masonry walls, damage to chimneys, north wall lintel supports have cracked leaving them vulnerable to collapse, and there is general damage to internal walls and ceilings.

Chance to see how farms work FEDERATED Farmers North Canterbury is inviting Christchurch families to experience a working Landcorp sheep and beef farm. They have organised Farm Day on Sunday, March 18 to give individuals and families the perfect chance to see how farms work. “Farm Day is a great chance to see what sheep and beef farmers do and how we do it, organiser Neil Stott said. “After last year’s earthquakes saw Farm Day cancelled, we are pleased to be working

with Landcorp who are opening up its 635 hectare Eyrewell Station farm. “Eyrewell rears some 7500 lambs and 500 calves and is about 45 minutes from central Christchurch. We can promise the whole family a fun and rewarding experience, he said. The Farm Day will be held between 10am and 3pm at Eyrewell Station, 175 Downs Road, Eyrewell. Nearing 10,000 full repairs completed

We’re now completing 80 homes a day And the run rate is increasing The repair programme is building momentum. Our project teams and the independent contractors they work with have done 60,000 repairs, large and small, so far. A lot of that was urgent work to deal with the impact of aftershocks. 10,000 full-scope repairs have also been completed, and another 16,000 have planning or physical repair work under way. The past year was also about building the resources to get the job done. We now have 20 Hubs in earthquake affected communities,

more than 1,000 contracting firms and 500 project management staff co-ordinating the work. About 11,000 people – contractors and staff – have been inducted to the programme at this point. Our client EQC has set us a tough target – to finish 80 percent of the estimated 100,000 homes in the repair programme by the end of 2014. It’s not going to be easy, but we Cantabrians are a determined bunch.

MISS Canterbury Nicole Franklin,18, has started the year on a high note with her selection as one of 12 competitors for the 2012 Miss World New Zealand title, which will be decided in Auckland on April 28. Ms Franklin, a former Christchurch Girls’ High School student, who has just started her second year at Otago University majoring in psychology and dance, had always considered modelling as a part-time job until a friend suggested she enter the Miss Canterbury contest. “I was quite surprised to win Miss Canterbury and now I’m really excited about being a Miss World New Zealand contestant. “It’s all happened quite fast, but I am learning a lot as I go.” Many of the stereotypes surrounding beauty pageants were quickly dispelled for Ms Franklin, who said the other contestants were all intelligent, down-to-earth and friendly. “All the girls are really lovely and most are university students, so it is very different from the ideas that people usually have about

OLD-FASHIONED floral favourites including carnations, roses and delphiniums will steal the show in Auckland designer Franca Logan’s Project Runway exhibition at the Ellerslie International Flower Show, which begins on March 7. The floral display will be staged as a runway set in a rambling ethereal summer garden. It explores some of the latest trends, fashion, and techniques in floral design and decoration. Ms Logan said the colour palette would be delicate, summery and playful.

“My choice of flowers reflects fashion’s return to vintage and oldworld styling; these are the looks that are currently dominating the world’s catwalks. “There’s lots of crochet, yarn and natural textures on the catwalk, which I will replicate in my floral exhibit. “Floral models wearing the latest fashions will strut down the catwalk; it will be playful and lots of fun.” Ms Logan trained in Canada and was selected to represent New Zealand at international floral displays in Malaysia, England and Canada.

Drivers urged to practise hard WITH tougher on-road driving tests being introduced from this week, the NZ Transport Agency is urging young drivers and their parents to put in plenty of practice before booking their test appointments. The NZTA has developed a new and more challenging on-road test for learner drivers entering the restricted licensing phase. The test aims to improve the safety

of young and novice drivers as part of the Government’s Safer Journeys road safety strategy. NZTA chief executive Geoff Dangerfield said the new test had been specifically designed to encourage learner drivers to clock up 120 hours of supervised practice before they sit the test, and that level of preparation would be needed to pass.

Getting it right: Centenarian Jessie Alabone trims the edges of her lawn using scissors to get them perfect. She has just received her fourth garden award, presented by the Riccarton Wigram Community Board yesterday. Photo: Samantha Early

JESSIE Alabone is proof you’re never too old to be a perfectionist. The west-Christchurch resident, who turns 101 in August, trims the edges of her lawn by getting down on her hands and knees and using a pair of scissors. Her garden is filled with brightly coloured flowers and there’s not a weed in sight – her hands are scarred from years of working without garden gloves, as she prefers the feel of dirt between her fingers. “I love my garden…I do it for my own satisfaction, that’s my life now, my garden and my family.” It’s this dedication that has seen her receive her fourth Community Pride Garden Award this week. “I was so excited, it’s unexpected. I do it for the love of it, I love it. I love my flowers.” She also received garden awards in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Mrs Alabone, who has two children, seven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and six

great-great grandchildren, said her late husband Percy also liked to keep a tidy garden. “He was picky too, if there was a weed there…” She maintains the large garden with minimal help – her son mows the lawns and her granddaughter tends to the shrubs, but she does everything else. “I won’t let anyone else help because no-one can do it good enough!” Each day she spends at least two hours in the garden and she believes it has helped her live as long as she has. Her favourite flowers are tulips and pansies. “The pansies are like little faces.” She even has a fake owl to prevent the neighbourhood cats from using her flower beds as a luxury loo. Though it has been a struggle to keep the garden blooming with this year’s water restrictions, she has kept it up within the rules and each day she reaps the rewards. “I open the door and look at colour.”

Celebrating Success 2012 Building Courage

On February 22, we marked the anniversary of the February earthquake with a memorial service at Linwood College. Balloons were released following a minute’s silence, many containing messages thoughtfully prepared by students and staff. A red balloon was released to represent those we have loved and grieved for, and fifty white balloons to represent hope for the future. A Red Rhododendron was purchased by the environmental group and planted in the school gardens to remember Jayden Andrews Howland, who lost his life on this day last year. Ms Paiti spoke of our city and school, made sacred by courage and loss. We were reminded that for all its blessings, that this land we stand on can be harsh and unforgiving. As we stood together, we remembered a moment etched in time when much was lost. However, in the face of tragedy much abides; the grace of community, the strength and generosity of each other and the determination to rebuild stronger than before, for a future full of hope. A future and a heart for and with our youth, for the future is theirs.

A “stunning” performance by the Linwood College Orchestra. Last week, our increasingly high-profile school orchestra opened this year’s popular Classical Sparks event in Hagley Park. The sixty-five musicians had rehearsed through the last week and a half of their summer holidays and were well up Top Year 10 to the task of taking their place on the enormous Summertimes stage and entertaining the thousands of people attending the occasion. The Linwood Orchestra’s thirty-minute programme also featured several soloists, including soprano Karen Tewnion-Smith in an aria by Puccini, and the orchestra’s former leader, Fiona Pears, who wowed the crowd with her spectacular violin magic in Monti’s Csardas. The event’s MC described the orchestra’s performance as “stunning” and commented several times on the rapturous audience reception. Organisers of the event also expressed considerable awe at the quality and vitality of the student musicians’ playing and professionalism. The orchestra’s programme was intended to end with conductor, Tony Ryan’s composition, The Linwood March, but as with the group’s performances in Europe last year, an encore was demanded. The audience continued to applaud as the musicians left the stage at the end of their latest triumph. February 22, the Linwood College Orchestra played as part of Christchurch’s Earthquake Memorial Commemoration, which also took place in Hagley Park.

New senior leadership team targets 21st Century Learning We take great pleasure in announcing the senior leadership team for 2012, which includes three new senior leadership staff. Zen Under Fire is a vivid account of Marianne’s experience living and working in the world’s most notorious battlefield. As well as sharing the incredfible details of her UN role, Marianne tells the very personal story of the shattering effect that the high stress environment had on her and her relationships, and asks what it really means to good in a country that is under siege from within. The race is on for board seat Samantha Early

NOMINATIONS are being called for candidates to fill a seat on the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board after first-term board member Mike Thorley resigned. A by-election will be held on Friday, May 11 to fill the position, with potential nominees having until midday on Thursday, March 22 to put their hands up. Board chairman Phil Clearwater said he hoped some good candidates would come forward. “We have a very effective community board and I also hope that local residents take notice of the by-election and when the papers come, they make sure they vote,” he said. Mr Thorley was unavailable for comment. The recent by-election in the Burwood-Pegasus ward, which saw former ChristChurch

Cathedral Dean Peter Beck elected to the city council, attracted only about 35 per cent of eligible voters and Mr Clearwater was urging people to have their say in SpreydonHeathcote. “It’s fair to say that in by-elections, it’s always a relatively lower turnout and if people want to have the best candidate elected they need to be involved.” The preliminary electoral roll for the ward is now open for people to check. “All eligible people will need to enrol or update their enrolment details by March 22 to vote in the by-election,” registrar of electors for the Port Hills electorate Glen Clark said. “Only those people who are correctly enrolled will receive voting papers in the mail and be able to have a say in the election. This

makes it very important for newly eligible electors to enrol as soon as possible and for those already enrolled to check that their enrolment details are up to date,” Mr Clark said. Enrolment forms are available by calling 0800 36 76 56, by free-texting your name and address to 3676, from any Post Shop or by requesting or downloading one from the elections website www.elections.org.nz. Voting papers will be posted out from April 18, with people having until midday on Friday, May 11 to return them. Nomination forms for candidates are available from the Christchurch City Council’s Beckenham Service Centre and South Christchurch Library, 66 Colombo Street and at the ground floor reception at the Civic Office, 53 Hereford Street.

From windy Wigram to the world Samantha Early

THE persistent nor’ east wind experienced in Christchurch has its advantages when your idea of fun is screaming down a former Air Force runway in a small, wheeled cage attached to a sail. The Canterbury Blokart Club has been based at Wigram since 2009, when the club gained access to the former Air Force base’s sealed apron and taxi way. Blokarts, also known as land yachts, were invented in 2000 by New Zealander Paul Beckett. About 10,000 have been sold worldwide and racing them has become a growing amateur sport. Now, two members of the Canterbury Blokart Club are preparing to test their skills Need for speed: Canterbury Blokart Club at international events in the coming months. member Terry Helm rips it up at Wigram. off to the United States for this year’s World Blokart Championships held at the Ivanpah dry lake bed in California’s Mojave Desert. The five-day competition will take place in April and Mr Jelley is combining the racing with touring and a holiday with his wife of 38 years, Iarene. Mr Jelley, who is entering the performance class, has been racing blokarts for about two years. He got hooked after trying one while on holiday in Golden Bay. Though his previous experience in sailing has helped, he said there were some key differences with blokarting. “It’s a lot drier, a lot warmer, and a lot faster. The Canterbury Blokart Club meets each Sunday afternoon, which Mr Jelley calls his release from the working week as a safety advisor for the Civil Aviation Authority. “And of course it’s a green sport, its great

fun making something out of wind, one way to beat Christchurch’s consistent nor’ easterlies. Fellow club member Terry Helm, from Parklands, is looking forward to competing in the 2012 Australia Blokart Open Championship being held this month (March 16 to 19) at Farnborough Beach, Yeppoon, Queensland. Like Mr Jelley, he is also extending the trip into a holiday with his wife. Mr Helm, who took up blokarting 18 months ago, has entered the production class. “I just want to go and kick some Aussie butt, he said. He said he got a buzz out of the speed and challenge of trying to win. Both men are speed record holders at Wigram. Terry Helm holds the production speed record at 69.9km/h and Bob Jelley the performance record at 76.2km/h.

Big fun day in Barrington Hundreds of southwest Christchurch locals turned out, left, to enjoy the Barrington Big Fun, held at Barrington Park on Sunday. The biennial event attracted more than 40 community groups and support agencies from the local area who displayed their services to the public. Despite grey skies the crowd enjoyed entertainment from bands, a bouncy castle and dance groups. The event was supported by the Spreydon Heathcote Community Board. Photo: Mike Peters

Barrington is going forward – new extension opens

fPg Feb12_FINAL.indd 1

Today marked the beginning of a new chapter in the life of Barrington Shopping Centre. Locals might have got used to the scaffolding, building vans and the sound of hammers, but the wait is over. The new 3000 square metre extension has opened after 15 months of development. Postie and On Time have now opened their new Barrington stores and eight more shops will follow over the next few weeks, including Pagani, Maki Mono, Muffin Break, Wendy’s Supa Sundaes, Simply Beauty, Unichem, ASB and Westpac. There are even smart new public toilets! Angela Booth, Barrington Shopping Centre Manager is enthusiastic

about the opening, “The Barrington Shopping Centre is getting a fantastic new lease on life. We started extensions 15 months ago and forged on with them through last year’s February earthquake. Now, the Barrington extension is one of the first new buildings to be completed since the big shake. It’s great to be part of a commitment to our area and to Christchurch’s future.” Barrington’s new surrounds are modern, spacious and light, but without the big mall’s hustle. There is still plenty of free carparking, and the new entrance off Athelstan Street makes getting to the shopping centre safer and easier.

Silverstream Estates assists red zone dilemma with a new housing density Silverstream Estates offers a range of sec ons from 300m2 to 600m2 appealing to those who like the idea of being close to both beach and river, or trout fishing in a clear spring-fed stream. It is the first Living 7 zone in the Waimakariri district developed to cater for people wan ng the op on of varying home sizes. It means they can offer 2 bedroom villas, completed fi ed out and landscaped, for a very

Fred is certain they have a solu on for that new market, with well designed homes with many extras, fully landscaped sec ons and a great living environment – and all at prices that represent excellent value for money. “We’ve sold a lot of sec ons in stages two and three, which will have tles in nine and 12 months, and that gives some certainty to people who need to relocate. Some of them are so absolutely delighted, indeed grateful, to find such a nice replacement at an affordable level.”

Fred had been a member of the Kaiapoi Town redevelopment commi ee and had grown to understand the proud culture of Kaiapoi, with many families being fourth genera on locals. Late last year the government used the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Act to approve changes to the Waimakariri District Plan to free up the subdivision. Commissioners had earlier decided adjacent land nearer the historic river township should be developed first, even though plans for that area were not as advanced.

“We have sec ons and house and land packages in stage one for sale as well for those wan ng to start sooner. Those tles will be available in June.” Silverstream Estates lies on the western side of the motorway, about 20 minutes north of central Christchurch. It has lovely views of the Port Hills and Southern Alps, and is within walking distance of Kaiapoi. compe ve $290,000. Bigger homes are available from $320,000. The plan also has a small convenience shopping area for essen al community needs. Silverstream (the south branch of the Upper Kaiapoi River) runs through the new subdivision. It has been by developed by Silverstream Estates Limited which is also developing Gateway Estates at Darfield. Siverstream Estates Limited and H Investments (NZ) Limited, the company that purchased the partly completed Styx Mill Estate and completed it, are sister companies. Director John Hayson and Principal Fred Rahme have been working on it over the past six years, more recently reinven ng and modifying their plans to meet the needs of people from red zones and general community.

“We’ve put in an abundance of green space, created reserves, playgrounds, cycle tracks and streamside walks, all of which will enhance a sense of community and encourage passive recrea on. It is also designed to reflect good old fashioned neighbourhood values,” Fred said. It is not the first me Fred has worked in an earthquake ravaged area. He was with the Australian Trade Commission in Kobe, helping rebuild and providing accommoda on for those in the most destructed area. ENTERTAINMENT

THURSDAY MARCH 1 2012

Evening show goes country SINGER Mel Parsons is teaming up with actresses Amelia Guild and Emma Newborn for a unique take on rural life with their show in Amberley on March 22. The show is one of 22 performances on farms and in woolsheds that the trio will stage throughout the South Island.

Two-time Tui Award finalist Parsons, who hails from a West Coast farm, will kick off the evening with songs from her latest album, Red Grey Blue. Guild and Newborn will then present an entertaining take on farm life, which incorporates a blend of theatre and comedy.

Cinemascoped

The event takes place at Berriedale farm. Pre-sale tickets are $33 plus a booking fee and are available online at www.eventfinder.co.nz. Limited door-sale tickets priced at $40 will be available on the night. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 7.30pm.

Kate McRae

The Descendants ALEXANDER Payne makes films that tug at your heartstrings, blending comedy and tragedy, so that his middle-class characters wallow in the kind of selfobsessed angst, which generates vast amounts of sympathy from audiences. But I’ve never found his films particularly convincing. About Schmidt was a transparent attempt to win Jack Nicholson an Oscar and I thought Sideways was shallow and narcissistic, so I didn’t have high expectations for The Descendants. Maybe it was the storyline (a man grappling with family crises), maybe it was the Hawaiian location (reminiscent of the West Coast), or maybe it was the Clooney factor, but The Descendants struck a chord in me in a way his other films have not.

Financial comedy with a twist RICCARTON Players’ latest, Death and Taxes, is a financial satire that explores insurance, investments, and KiwiSaver. Gareth Burke, Destiny Life Insurance’s top agent for three years, wants to win a trip to Hawaii and take receptionist Tiffany along. However, Lucille Potts is determined to be the first female agent to top the sales figures and has a special plan to ensure victory. Gareth must overcome his over-bearing wife, a manic-depressive corporate motivator, the government, and his own untimely death. The comedy is on at 8pm from Wednesday to Saturday until March 17 at The Open Stage at Hagley College. Tickets are $18 for waged and $15 for unwaged. Phone 03 338 4699 or visit www.riccartonplayers.co.nz.

Clooney tends to play characters of a certain type; he’s the man with a plan. However, this time as lawyer Matt King, he’s a man without a plan; or perhaps more correctly, he is a man whose plan is disintegrating. His wife is in hospital on life support after a motor boat accident and he finds himself, for the first time, in sole charge of his two daughters, 17-year-old Alexandra (Shailene Woodley) and 10-year-old Scottie (Amara Miller). He is also the head of the King family, a disparate collection of cousins including Beau Bridges, here channelling his brother Jeff’s infamous slacker, “the Dude”. The King family has to divide the family fortune, the last piece of untouched land on the island of Kauai, and as the sole trustee, Matt has the final word. It could net the family millions, but it will also sever their ties to the past and to their community. That’s a lot to deal with and although he seems impassive at times, Clooney, aided by great performances from the young supporting cast, pulls off a genuine performance and manages to get in a few laughs as well. For those who need more of the Cloon-meister, I also recommend his highly anticipated political drama, The Ides of March, also showing at the Hollywood.

½ The Descendants is now playing at the Hollywood in Sumner, ph 3266102.

The naked truth about women’s bodies

N

ew Zealand women have major issues with body image. A lot don’t like their appearance, are obsessed with weight, and believe good looks and success are intrinsically linked. This is what Next Magazine discovered when they spoke to a cross-sec on of New Zealand women about body image in one of the biggest surveys of this kind. More than 1500 women of varying ages and backgrounds responded to ques ons about their appearance, diet, and cosme c surgery and were asked their opinion on links between looks and success.

people tend to get more opportuni es. Two out of three women believe that goodlooking people are more likely to succeed.

The research points to the fact many women feel that they are missing out on opportuni es because of their looks. It showed 89 per cent of women believe the way you look and present yourself is very important to succeeding in life, and 79 per cent are of the opinion that good-looking

Breasts are best

“It’s great to see we’ve ditched the die ng in favour of making healthier ea ng choices, but the high link to the idea of plas c surgery suggests we have a long way to go before we’re in control of our body image,” says Next editor Sarah Henry.

* The survey was conducted through ACP’s All Women Talk Panel, November 18 to 21, While 63 per cent of those surveyed would 2011. consider plas c surgery, it seems Kiwi women * The survey featured 17 ques ons on body image * A total of 1575 women completed the survey

We always knew appearance was important to women, but we underes mated just how much impact body image has. If women are happy with what they see in the mirror, they generally have a posi ve outlook. However, when they dislike their reflec on, this feeling can manifest itself in all aspects of their life.

Good looks lead to success

are not die ng. Speaking anonymously, 54 per cent said they don’t diet, but instead set rules for themselves about what they should eat and 17 per cent said they never diet.

The part of their bodies Kiwi women most dislike is their tummies, with 65 per cent saying this is what they like the least in their build. The part they like the most is their breasts as 37 per cent said these are one of their best features.

Unhappy with weight The results showed three out of four women are unhappy with their weight, with 43 per cent keen to lose at least five kilos. And it’s clearly a topic that is at the forefront of their minds, as 86 per cent think about their weight daily. Many fixate about it several mes a day, the same frequency that they think about their partner, sex, food, and sleep.

According to the research, size 10 to 12 is no longer the norm as of those surveyed, 49 per cent are size 14 or bigger. Less than a third are a size 10 or smaller (28 per cent).

Incredible Variety Incredible Fun Incredible Value

Creativity on display: Check out the amazing displays in this year’s Ellerslie Flower Show.

show exhibitors. It never ceases to amaze me how well everyone gets on, is happy to lend someone a spade, pair of hands, and even a plant or two in some cases. One of my favourite designers is from Wellington, Ben Hoyle (check out his website at www.bluegecko.co.nz). His garden “She loves me, she loves me not …” is truly an unexpected joy. You will find yourself going back to it more than once. Tim Feather’s “A Moveable Feast” garden is sure to connect with Cantabrians as it features a selec on of whimsical pop-up and portable courtyard gardens. One of the afflic ons I suffer from is being a “plantaholic”. It’s a hideous problem I have had for many years; it’s very difficult to control or remedy. I am sure when you see the new plants that will appear in the Show Offs display, you may need one or two for your garden as well. Fourteen new plants are being showcased and one or two have really caught my eye. The new Daphne Eternal Fragrance is a superstar. Its dwarf habit and sun-loving nature makes it the perfect alterna ve to the some mes fussy pink Daphne. It may not be readily available in the shops un l spring. If you do like fragrant, easy-to-grow plants, then you must simply make a beeline for it at the show to see how lovely it is. I first saw this plant in Australia last year and it literally blew me away. I have been lucky enough to have two plants at home to test drive this summer and the dear wee things have been flowering constantly since I got them in November. A list of the other new plants being showcased at the show can be found at www.gogardening.co.nz.

Healthy pickings: Satisfy your plant-thirst by getting your pickings, which are sure to be healthy and beautiful, at the selloff.

Tips for ge ng the most from the show • Allow yourself plenty of me. Gates open at 10am and close at 6pm.

Rachel Vogan The Happy Gardener

• Wear sensible shoes such as flats; the park isn’t a place for fine heels.

• Be prepared for those impulse purchases (that should include a glass with something bubbly in it or other refreshments). • Keep your cket stubs, so you can go back in on Sunday for the selloff. • When pre-purchasing a cket, choose an ‘any day’ cket, just in case the weather is inclement so you can go whichever day you choose. Enjoy! Look forward to seeing you there. www.thehappygardener.co.nz

Happy to finish

WHILE some were pushing for first place in round five of the Contact TriWoman series triathlon in Pegasus on Saturday, many, such as Sydenham resident Judith Sunbeam, pictured, who came 61st, were just happy to cross the finish line. There were no podium prizes for the event, which was more focused on getting people involved than on winning and losing.

Veteran’s experience helps at Woodford Glen CHRISTCHURCH veteran Colin Cameron teamed up with Greymouth’s Tony Oliver to win Rumble by the River at AmPro Tools Woodford Glen at the weekend. Just one heat was completed on Friday after the southerly change finally drifted over the complex, meaning a revised schedule for Saturday’s racing, two heats, and a top 14 shootout followed by two more heats. Cameron and Oliver started the night well with a second and third respectively, putting them just six points behind leaders Jacob O’Connor of Canterbury and Invercargill’s Campbell McManaway. Cameron went on to score again in the second heat of that night, which, combined with Oliver’s seventh, closed the gap to just four points. By the end of the pole shuffle in which Oliver was fifth and Cameron ninth, the experienced duo had hit the front and they consolidated that lead with third (Cameron) and eighth (Oliver) placings into the third heat of the night to take a 12-point lead over O’Connor and McManaway. In the final heat, Cameron was again to the fore with fourth placing whilst Oliver limped home with front-end damage to finish back in 14th. It was enough to hold on to their 12-point lead, earning the pair the inaugural Rumble by the River Championship on 294pts over O’Connor and McManaway (282pts), whilst Chris Hall and Shane Harwood claimed third with 267pts.

in the spiritual home of “The Game”. Those from the valleys of Wales had the gall to knock at the Pearly Gates of The Game and give the English gentlemen a tune-up under the cunning eye of Kiwi coach Warren Gatland. For as long as I can remember, the advantage of being able to play at home was worth points before play started. This past weekend has shown me just how clued up coaches are now and their meticulous preparation prior to a game, regardless of where the game is to be played. I’m pretty sure that the Black Caps had not lost a 50-over game of cricket for the past seven years at the Wellington Stadium. Hello, we all know what the result was on Saturday. Perhaps like last season’s Crusaders, we should play away every week this 2012 season?

I was really ho hum over the prospect of watching the Super 15 in 2012. Far too early, far too long, far more summer sport to watch. But, with what happened on Friday night, I was totally hooked into the competition. What an arm wrestle at Eden Park. Not the greatest exhibition of rugby, but boy was it willing and edge-of-the-seat stuff! Eden Park has established itself as a rugby fortress and visiting teams are often afraid. Not so the Crusaders this time, which is a very encouraging sign for the weeks ahead. In the Waikato Stadium, the Chiefs have had some big raps on them for this season; after all, they pinched ‘Dollar Bill’ off us! This did not faze the Southern Men, who laid everything on the line to win. In Sydney, the Waratahs’ fans couldn’t prevent the Reds from taking the points. The final blow occurred 12,000 miles away

Community spirit buoys Burwood School Staying positive: Strong community support saw Burwood School raise over $80,000 for a new playground for the senior school. Enjoying the new play equipment are principal Susan Jennison, Travis Griffen,10, Nikita Tai, 10, Troy Cayless, 9, and Molly Behan, 9.

Gina McKenzie DESPITE being hit hard by the earthquakes, the resilient Burwood School community has pulled together to raise over $80,000 for a new playground. New principal Susan Jennison said her first impression of the school was overwhelmingly positive due to the dedication of teachers, pupils, parents and community. “Even with all the difficulties Burwood has faced after the earthquakes, people are so positive and it was amazing that the PTA could raise the money for the playground during such tough times.

“It’s a real testament to the strength and resilience of everyone connected to the school community. Ms Jennison said that whilst the school’s roll had dropped by 100 students, she was determined to focus on developing a positive future. “Although there are many broken roads and buildings around us, the spirit of the school is so strong that 2012 will be a positive year for us. “Our new school symbol is a heart and this reflects that the people that make up the school are our most important asset. The creative spirit of Burwood impressed Ms

Jennison, who has been teaching in Christchurch for 24 years. “I made a deliberate choice to come here and I can see so much potential and creativity that can be nurtured and developed into something very special. A new whiteboard placed at the school gate had given Ms Jennison a chance to directly communicate with the school community. “Each day, I put a new message up that I hope will give pupils, teachers and parents a positive boost. “On the first day back, the children beamed as

they read that the new playground was ready for them. They were off and racing across the grass to get on the new equipment. Ms Jennison said Burwood School’s motto of “working hard and aiming high inspired her to look forward to a bright future. “With the incredible support I have here, both in the school and in the local community, great things can be achieved. “I’m really excited about Burwood’s future and I think we can lead the way in terms of schools that adapt, create and excel in these difficult times.

Planting efforts create a memorial park AROUND 200 people worked alongside each other last Saturday to create a special “memorial planting area at Bottle Lake Forest Park. They were joined by All Black captain Richie McCaw, swimmer Sophie Pascoe, and CTV staff member Mary Anne Jackson. Local residents and people walking through the forest, attracted by the activity, also took time out to get involved in the Westpac-organised event. The memorial area, which is sited near Broadhaven Park in Parklands, was planted with more than 4000 native trees and shrubs to be enjoyed by the people living in Canterbury today and by future generations. The planting started at 10am and went through until midday, by which time the volunteers had worked up a hearty appetite.

Planting for the future: Westpac regional manager South Island, Gina Dellabarca, Sophie Pascoe and Richie McCaw hard at work.

Rotary came to their rescue by cooking a barbecue lunch. “It's been a tough year for everyone and it's good to look forward, and in a practical way, be a part of the rebuild, Mr McCaw said. “It’s great that Westpac, Rotary, and so many other groups from our community joined together for a common cause. “Everyone worked so hard and did their bit to re-establish this reserve and I’m sure people will come back to continue what has started for the future generations. Miss Pascoe echoed McCaw’s thoughts, adding that it was great to see a range of ages out in force. “Family members of all ages worked alongside each other because what happened affected everyone. It was great to play a small part in the rejuvenation of the reserve.

Over 300 volunteers help in clean-up MORE than 300 volunteers completed around 100 community jobs across the city on Sunday, particularly in the hard-hit eastern suburbs, during the second Let’s Get It Done day. The event, organised by Rebuild Christchurch, followed on from the inaugural event held in September 2011. About 12 tonnes of bricks were removed along with a large amount of silt, including an entire street in Parklands and dozens of small jobs were completed for those who needed assistance. Other work that was undertaken by the volunteers included clearing empty sections, helping people pack, and planting about $10,000 worth of trees donated by an Amberley

nursery, at St Albans Primary School. Rebuild Christchurch founder Deon Swiggs attributed the success of the event to the dedication of volunteers and the Rebuild Christchurch Foundation team, which was established last September. “It’s been almost 18 months since the September quake in 2010 and it is clear that there is still plenty to be done. “The focus on the CBD is needed, but we hope that by bringing relief and action to those still struggling in the suburbs, we can keep their needs and stories 'out there'. “We must never forget how important our communities are. Strong suburban communities will help make a much stronger city.

Love and hope alive in New Brighton OVER 2500 people descended on Thomson Park, New Brighton on Saturday to enjoy an uplifting community event whilst expressing their feelings on the future of the suburb. New Brighton parent Leanne Young said she was overwhelmed by the positive spirit of the community. “It just shows that there’s still plenty of life and that we all still love living here.” A wishing tree, inspired by New Brighton advocate Rebecca May, was erected in the centre of the park and visitors wrote their wishes for the community on tags that were tied to the tree. Ms May said the responses boded well for

the future of New Brighton. “We had an overwhelming positive response from everyone and the people of the community were really pleased to finally be consulted. “We’ll collate the comments and then present them to the community, council, and Cera, so that they can hear the voice of the people.” One of the most popular comments was the need for a local community aquatic facility to replace QEII. Some people suggested that Rawhiti Domain would be an ideal location for a new aquatic facility as it is already zoned as a recreational

ground and had the space to build one. Other suggestions included salt water pools, more recreation facilities, and community halls. Sporting events proved popular on Saturday, with many people trying out new sports. Mitch Alcock from Rawhiti Community Sports Inc was delighted to see people getting involved. “Everyone was having so much fun trying out different sports from softball to boxing and judo. “Our community has been hit hard, but we’re still running great activities and

joining a sports club is one way we’ll continue to build this community.” Youth Alive Trust team leader James Ridpath said his team looked forward to building on the event. “We look forward to keeping community spirits high and celebrating everything positive that’s still happening in New Brighton because we know the road to repair will be long, but we’ll come out of it stronger and brighter.” The event was a joint venture between Youth Alive Trust, Rawhiti Community Sports Inc, and the Christchurch City Council.

Pedal power: It’s all about family for James Geekie, Kaylene Lucas, George Webb, Phil Ibell (event organiser), Cameron Lucas, and Hayden Lucas who recently took part in the 250-kilometre Coast to NZ Post bike ride from Greymouth to Christchurch.

Gina McKenzie

FIFTEEN years ago, when Hayden Lucas was diagnosed with a brain tumour, five close-knit family members, whose ages range from 22 to 84, took up the challenge of completing a bike ride to support the Child Cancer Foundation. “They were wonderful to us when we were going through a very difficult time, so it was natural to do something to help them,” said Kaylene Lucas. The annual event, which was in its 25th and final year after New Zealand Post withdrew its sponsorship, had raised over $222,000 for child cancer. Event organiser Phil Ibell said he hoped another organisation would step up to continue the event. “It’s a way for people to join together and rekindle friendships whilst supporting a good cause.”

QEII swimmers remain strong together FOR almost a year, members of the over-50s and early bird swimmers and aqua joggers from QEII have been meeting monthly to share memories and strengthen their bonds. Group coordinator Shirley Forbes said February 22 was an emotional day for the group, who marked the anniversary with two minutes silence at QEII. “It was the first time most of us had been down there since the earthquake, so it was very emotional and shocking to see the damage firsthand. “We made a speech and held hands in a circle for two minutes of silence and we were

very pleased that the council groundsmen on duty came down and joined our celebration.” Mrs Forbes said the monthly meetings had helped QEII swimmers stay positive and move forward together. Some members of the close-knit group of over 70 swimmers had been using QEII since it opened in 1974 and strong friendships had been formed over the last 37 years. Group members have continued their friendships by swimming together at Jellie Park and Graham Condon pool. Gina McKenzie BEING in the water comes naturally to champion twin swimmers Lucy and Kaylee Jackson, who took up swimming when they were three and have just achieved personal best times at the New Zealand Junior Championships. The 11-year-olds overcame the difficult training conditions created by the earthquakes and started off the year on a high note by winning 19 medals between them at the Canterbury A Swimming Championships in Dunedin. Lucy won three gold, three silver and three bronze medals whilst Kaylee won four gold, three silver and three bronze medals. The high-achieving pair then went on to achieve personal best times at the New Zealand Junior Championships held in Wellington last month. Lucy and Kaylee train for 10 hours per

week and have adapted to the difficult training situation after the earthquakes. “It wasn’t easy because we had to travel to lots of different pools early in the morning and late at night, but we love swimming, so it’s worth it.” Lucy cherished the friendships that she had made through swimming. “It’s really fun getting to meet different people and making friends who also love swimming.” Kaylee said that their training was exciting and she was always encouraged to do her best. “I love beating my own best times and training with all the other swimmers.” The twins’ ultimate goal is to compete at the Commonwealth Games. “We will try to get to that level and keep beating our personal best times.”

Tutaepatu Lagoon project online A SHORT video detailing the ongoing ecological restoration work at Tutaepatu Lagoon near Woodend is now available on YouTube. Tutaepatu Lagoon is a historic place nestled behind the sand dunes between Pegasus township and Woodend, within the Tuhaitara Coastal Park, which runs from the mouth of the Waimakariri River north to Waikuku Beach. “We are very excited to be able to show the progress we have made in just over a

year since restoration work began at the lagoon,” said Greg Byrnes, Te Kōhaka ō Tuhaitara Trust general manager. “People can now view Tutaepatu Lagoon from a new platform built in an area cleared of willows on the eastern side of the lagoon and accessible by foot or on bike.” More than 4000 native plants have now been planted including kahikatea, New Zealand’s tallest native tree, which will become a key element of the regenerating forest in the coming decades.

BROTHERS Damiano, 9, and Romeo Agnew, 8, are so committed to sign language that they are now teaching their fellow pupils at Cotswold School in Bishopdale to master the skill. “We’ve been using it (sign language) our whole lives, Romeo said. Their father is deaf and from a young age, both learned sign language to communicate with him. “People can pick it up really easily, Damiano said. The idea to teach sign language arose when Romeo decided to do something

special at school this year. With the help of his brother Damiano, he started a sign language club with assistance from his teacher, Miss Dudley. Now, each Tuesday, all classes in the senior school can send two pupils for lessons, but it has come with a degree of sacrifice involved. The pupils have to give up some of their playtime. This has not dampened enthusiasm, however, and the club has 16 enthusiastic members. “People can pick it up pretty easily, Romeo said. “It will take five weeks to

get up to speed and they can practise at home and show their class what they are learning. While Miss Dudley supervises the club, Romeo and Damiano run each lesson. To assist in this task in the first term, they have created a plan to teach the alphabet, greetings, colours, numbers, and songs. Miss Dudley said the two boys had shown organisation, commitment, and responsibility beyond their years. “We’re very proud of them. They’re responsible, enthusiastic, and wonderful role models.

Frustration for mall businesses Chris Tobin

CLOSURE of parts of Merivale Mall has frustrated business owners and operators, who have been forced to look elsewhere for temporary premises. Sergio’s co-owner Paul Dean said he was disappointed that the mall owners, Tower Property Fund, did not have a plan B to assist displaced businesses. “It’s disappointing that nothing has been set up in a positive light to maintain community spirit. They seem to be absorbed in the engineering side of things and lost focus on the retail side. He said strengthening the mall was positive in the long term. He planned to reopen for week-long stints in a temporary locationS, one in Riccarton has been confirmed and one in

Addington is being negotiated. A total of 17 businesses have been closed since February 2011 due to earthquake-related structural problems to the mall’s central twostorey building. These include the Fresh Choice supermarket. For 27 others in the mall, it has been business as usual. Stuart Atkinson, owner of Kip McGrath, which operated in the mall, has managed to obtain temporary rooms at Heartland Cotswold Hotel in Papanui Road and is ensuring that his 150 students’ work is not disrupted. “We were only out of business for a week and it’s a little bit cramped here, but we’re very fortunate, he said. Tower Property chief executive Sam Stubbs could not be contacted.

M E R I VA L E stonemason company C.N. Franzmann and Son has been asked by one of NZ’s top landscape designers, Xanthe White, to craft Oamaru stone for her design at the Ellerslie Flower Show. Ms White is one of four top New Xanthe White Zealand designers selected to exhibit in the exclusive gold medal gardens site, which will be one of the main highlights of the show. Her creation, ‘A garden for Christchurch’, is being sponsored by Daltons, with whom she has a longstanding relationship. Asked about working with Ms White, Darryl Franzmann said Oamaru stone was one of the finest natural materials to work with. “It’s definitely a stone with character that allows for a lot of creativity. I have never done anything at Ellerslie Flower Show before and it was awesome when Xanthe called me. The show is being held in Christchurch from A MERIVALE grandmother and lifelong March 7 to11. artist has turned the earthquakes’ wreckage into works of art. The temporary alcohol ban areas in Papanui and Merivale place a prohibition on drinking in public places from 6pm to 6am on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. THURSDAY MARCH 1 2012

Redwood School marks February 22 FOR all Christchurch schools, last Wednesday was a very significant day as the city commemorated the events of February 22, 2011. Schools around Christchurch also invited their communities to join them to mark the occasion. At Redwood School, the parents, children and staff joined together to both commemorate and celebrate. It was a time of remembrance of those who died, were injured, and for all the city; it was also a time where speakers celebrated the community and the spirit of Canterbury. As part of the commemoration, two students, Mikayla O’Sullivan and Henry Ellis, spoke of the way so many people in the community and from other parts of New Zealand have helped. They also spoke of the hope for the future as Christchurch rebuilds. After a time of silence, final words were said as red and black balloons, symbols of Canterbury’s spirit and hope for the future, were released. Children, staff, and parents dressed in red and black for the day. The following day, Redwood School was privileged to have the “Citizens of Christchurch” award lent for the day. This significant award “in recognition of acts of kindness, service and heroism” was presented at the Civic Service held in Hagley Park. Children throughout Christchurch and surrounding districts have shown kindness, service to others, and heroism through the past year. Japanese student begins scholarship JAPANESE student Ryo Hosoma, Education New Zealand’s high school International Student of the Year for 2011, will begin his studies towards a BA in media and communication at the University of Canterbury this month as the recipient of one of UC’s new fouryear scholarships for international students. Mr Hosoma, who studied at Burnside High School, has been awarded one of UC’s 24 new UC international student undergraduate scholarships. These scholarships contribute up to $20,000 per annum towards tuition fees for international students to study at UC. Four of the recipients of the new scholarship were students at Burnside High School last year. “Ryo arrived in January 2009 and came to school on the first day speaking practically no English and was exceptionally shy,” Burnside High School international manager Rhonda Brodie said. “Despite his low level of English, Ryo became involved in school life, playing the clarinet in the orchestra and the flute in the concert band.” “One of the reasons I came to

New Zealand was to improve my English skills,” Mr Hosoma said. “However, I now think it wasn’t just about learning the language. It was more about learning the culture, getting to know the locals, and what living in a foreign country is like.” After the earthquake in Christchurch last February, he helped to organise students, taking care of families that came from overseas, and starting a Facebook page to help the school’s international department keep in touch with everyone. Mr Hosoma decided to stay in Christchurch to continue his education at university. The other former Burnside High School students, who are winners of the new scholarships, are outstanding scholars who have shown a real passion for Christchurch over the last year, Ms Brodie said. “One of the other scholarship winners, Kian Seng Looi, chose to stay in Christchurch and attend UC in part because of the fantastic experience he had as a member of the Student Volunteer Army last year.”

Minor repair work to go ahead A TOTAL of 46 community facilities owned by Christchurch City Council, which suffered earthquake damage, will receive minor repair work. The facilities include toilet blocks and other buildings on a number of parks or reserves across Christchurch. All the facilities that are undergoing repairs only have minor cosmetic damage to the value of $5000. City Care has been contracted to do the work and will be covered by council insurance. General manager community services and facilities rebuild project sponsor Michael Aitken said experienced assessors had checked the facilities to determine the repairs that were needed. The repairs are being carried out under the council’s facilities rebuild project, which

provides a framework for future decisionmaking around all the buildings it owns. It is expected that repairs will be completed by the end of June. “We have been able to start repairs on these buildings because we have been able to more readily identify the type of damage that has occurred to them due to the fact that they are simple structures. “However, we face much more of a challenge with larger council-owned buildings as we are carrying out detailed engineering evaluations (DEEs), which are more intensive inspections, to gain a clearer picture of the level of damage they have sustained and their capacity to withstand future earthquakes.” For a list of facilities undergoing repairs, visit www.ccc.govt.nz/facilitiesrebuild.
