Building jobs are there – but when?

Hagley nightmare has silver lining

Samantha Early

THE building industry is doing everything it can to recruit Canterbury’s best and brightest school leavers as thousands of jobs will become available in the coming months but delays over the rebuild are causing concerns. Canterbury Development Corporation workforce strategy manager Simon Worthington said that the best guess at this stage was that around 30,000 additional construction related jobs would become available in region as a result of the rebuild. The rebuild was expected to take around four years for residential housing and infrastructure and 15 to 20 years for commercial areas. Mr Worthington said all figures were highly variable and dependant on a range of other factors. The Building and Construction Industry Trade Organisation (BCITO) took about 30 school careers advisors on a tour of two building sites on Monday to show them the complexity of the job. BCITO regional manager Richard Willis said the industry was going to be short of apprentices and they wanted school leavers to consider the trades as a first option rather than a last option. “We want the cream of the crop coming through and doing the best for Canterbury,”

he said. Mr Willis said there was plenty of work ahead with the quake rebuild as well as fixing leaky homes and building new houses to meet rising demand. “Our industry is going to need them. Sometime next year when it gets really busy we are going to need hundreds. We currently have 1100 to 1200 apprentices [in Canterbury] and we think we will probably get double that and then some.” However, the delay in starting the city’s rebuild, which depended on getting insurance coverage on new buildings, may affect the recruitment phase. The BCITO was already working on ways to keep those finishing pre-trade courses in November occupied until rebuilding activity kicks off, which they expect to be in March to September next year. St Bede’s gateway coordinator Bill Hall said students were interested in joining the trades but at the moment the builders didn’t have any work for them. “There is a real bottleneck which might mean we can’t really push it too hard with the students at the start of next year at least, because there is probably not enough for them to do.”

AMI had defended its chief executive John Balmforth over his salary and bonus which amounts to almost $1 million in a year when the company posted a $705 million annual loss. Mr Balmforth earned a salary of $869,369 for 2011 plus a bonus of $122,700 for 2010, putting him amongst the top 20 highest paid listed company chief executives in the country. Mr Balmforth could not be reached for comment

but AMI chairman Kerry Nolan said the company’s remuneration board which set the chief executive’s salary on an annual basis was satisfied that it was “in the correct range” when compared to chief executives of equivalent New Zealand companies. “It should be noted that AMI is a major New Zealand company with annual revenues of some $360 million, almost 500,000 policyholders, 1000 staff and 73 branches throughout the country.”

John Balmforth

Mr Nolan said no linkage could be made between Mr Balmforth’s salary and the Government’s guarantee of a $500 million bailout package, should the company require it. “The Crown, while it has greatly assisted AMI by subscribing for shares, has not yet paid any money for these shares, so no taxpayers’ funds could be said to be involved.” Finance Minister Bill English has said the Government would probably need to invest $337 million of taxpayer money into the company. Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend said he only had one thing to say on the matter. “If ever there was a year that a chief executive of an insurance company would earn their salary, this is the year.”

Temporary taste of power Driver’s seat: Outspoken Christchurch city councillor Chrissie Williams took Mayor Bob Parker’s seat to lead Thursday’s council meeting, which was also her final one as a councillor. Mayor Parker had to leave part way through to attend the signing of a $2 billion alliance agreement for the rebuild of the city’s infrastructure. With deputy Ngaire Button absent, Cr Williams, who had called the council “dysfunctional” when she announced her resignation two weeks ago, was invited to take the reins for a couple of hours. The buildings, which sit either side of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Library, are among a small number which have remained closed due to

earthquake damage. Vice-chancellor Dr Rod Carr said the university was facing unprecedented challenges with regard to its physical estate and financial situation. “Such decisions are always difficult, are not taken lightly and in some cases are in the end matters of judgment.”

I’m dumbfounded to discover that the Christchurch ratepayers are funding Cr Sue Wells’ airfares to the AGM of the Great Wine Capital Network conference in Germany while Cr. Aaron Keown is forced to pay his own accommodation, food and travel out of his own pocket to attend the Emergency Managers conference in the United States. This does seem dysfunctional in our ‘earthquaked’ city! Janet E. Allington-Harris Shirley

I wholeheartedly agree with Thomas Tripp’s disgust with New Zealand Fire Service (NZFS) management threatening disciplinary action against firefighters who took part in the recent 9/11 commemoration service in Christchurch. He may be equally disgusted at learning that professional firefighters’ basic hourly pay is a mere $12.29! This threat by management is in retaliation to the current strike action taken by firefighters as a result of a stall in wage negotiations - the majority of the public would be unaware they are, in fact, on strike. Consider what our firefighters have been through in recent times who, just like 9/11, were (amongst other emergency workers) the ones rushing into the CBD while most were fleeing from it. Are they not worth more than a miserly $12.29 an hour? Labour’s proposal to increase the minimum wage to $15/hour would be a good start. I’m extremely proud of my husband and his colleagues who have helped the residents of this city in their greatest times of need. NZFS management have shown nothing but contempt for these professionals in their pursuit for a decent wage - shame on them! Come on Christchurch - get behind our firefighters - $12.29 an hour is not enough to send our loved ones into danger on our behalf. E D Greaves Mt Pleasant

The Christchurch City Council has been totally dysfunctional over the whole earthquake situation. It is about time they stopped arguing among themselves and started to fast track consents to allow land to be opened in Christchurch for the rebuild. By the time they stop mucking around there will be no one left in Christchurch, businesses will disappear and residents will leave to find homes in other towns. Mayor Bob Parker said there were 10,000 sections available in Christchurch, why has he not published where this land is so we can move out of our damaged homes and rebuild? The city needs to get up and running now, forget about the fancy draft plan and make a start, then work around who and what comes back to the city. The council needs to prioritise and engage with the community and put their needs at first. Land / housing and business should be their number one priority and to this date there have been no signs that they see this as a priority. They need to get back to core business and get Christchurch pumping again. Mark Ball Bexley

Clarification OCEANIA IAEM president Kristin Hoskin says the conference that Christchurch city councillor Aaron Keown is attending (Mainland Press, September 21) is the IAEM USA Council conference not the IAEM conference. The global conference, or IAEM conference, as opposed to the US one, is taking place in Munich Germany and is hosted by the Europa Council this year.

The company’s managing director Nick Smith accepted the award and said his staff had made a fantastic effort while coping with difficult post-earthquake circumstances. “We were back on the air within three months and everyone worked so hard to make that happen. “Our loyal audience who supported us throughout this time also deserves recognition.” Mr Smith thanked Mainland Press for sharing its office space in Wairakei Rd, Harewood, with CTV. He also thanked landlord Tait Electronics. “Tait Electronics also deserved an award for all the work they did after the earthquake. “They provided huge support for overseas rescue crews by supplying them with hand held radios and other emergency items.” CTV presenter Rob Cope-Williams said it was very humbling to receive the award which was a testament to the strength of the staff. “It’s all about a small group of people banding together and making it happen. “We’ve had lots of comments from people on the street Award pleases: CTV production director Doug McCammon and sports about the good things we’re doing but it was wonderful to be broadcaster Peter Smith were delighted to see their hard work acknowledged with publicly recognised for all our hard work.” a resilience award. City to celebrate Antarctic season CHRISTCHURCH will celebrate the opening of the 2011/12 Antarctic season this weekend with a series of events to mark the 100th anniversary of Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s expedition to the South Pole. Each summer Christchurch hosts the United States and Italian Antarctic programmes, which use the city as their logistics hub. Christchurch residents will witness a dramatic flyover on Friday afternoon of the US Air Force C 17 Globemaster plane. The public is invited to explore the plane, one of the world’s largest, at an open day at Christchurch International Airport on Saturday October 1 from 10.30am to 12.30pm. The celebrations conclude with the annual South to Antarctica Service at 11am on Sunday 2 October. The event will be held at Christ’s College Chapel, followed by a wreath-laying in memory of Captain Scott and others who have lost their lives in Antarctica.

Quake commission to use parish hall THE Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission has reached an agreement with St Teresa’s Catholic parish in Riccarton to hold its hearings in the church hall that adjoins the church and school on Puriri St. St Teresa’s has agreed to let the Royal Commission have exclusive use of the facility for several months while hearings are held, beginning on October 17. To bring the hall up to standard, the commission is contributing over $20,000 towards the cost of improvements. The commission will also pay weekly rent. St Teresa’s Father Antoine Thomas said it was a great opportunity to reach out and live the last commandment of Jesus- Christ: ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’”

New sports and recreation facility for north-west Christchurch parking and four bus routes that stop within 200 metres. The Graham Condon Recreation and Sport Centre arises from a partnership between the Council and Papanui High School with support from Northlands Shopping Centre. The Centre is named after former Christchurch City Councillor and SPARC Board member the late Graham Condon, in recognition of his work for the community. The new facility will feature an eight lane, 25 metre indoor swimming pool, spa pool, learners’ pool and a separate toddlers’ pool with wet deck. The gym and sports hall is large enough for a full-sized netball court or three volleyball courts and will be equipped with state-of-the-art fitness and exercise equipment. A full range of activities will be available, including recreation and holiday programmes, group exercise classes, learn to swim tuition for all ages and abilities, and aqua classes.

The entrance way to the new Graham Condon Recreation and Sports Centre is easily accessible by the public. From 10 October, the Graham Condon Recreation and Sport Centre in Papanui will deliver world-class sports and recreation opportunities to the heart of the community

of the north-west Christchurch. The brand new facility is on Papanui High School land in Sisson Drive, opposite Northlands Shopping Centre and has plenty of on-site

Mayor Bob Parker says the fact that the Centre will open on schedule, with all the city has been through in the past twelve months, is a testimony to Christchurch’s unshaken can-do spirit. “I am especially pleased to see this latest recreation and sport centre open to the community, at a time when progress in reinstating this city’s premium facilities will be doubly welcome.”

New direct debit system makes membership easy A new system which allows users of Council Recreation and Sport facilities to choose the length of membership they wish to sign up for is being introduced from 1 October. The new direct debit ‘flexi’ system gives fitness centre or pool users the flexibility to pay monthly or fortnightly and the ability to freeze their membership if required. It will also reduce the first payment people must make when they join because until now a lump sum has been required. Business and Programme Manager David Bailey says the changes will allow members to be in greater control of their fitness programme – choosing the length of time they join up without being locked into fixed terms. There is no joining fee for memberships. “This is good news because it makes our services more accessible. With summer on its way, we’d encourage people to think about joining up.” From 1 October, three and six-month memberships will no longer be available. However, members will have the opportunity to sign up for a 12-month fixed membership if they prefer. They will have to pay cash upfront for this option.

Members have access to a range of facilities across the city including Jellie Park and Pioneer Sport and Recreation Centres; the recently relocated QEII Fitness at Parklands and the new Graham Condon Sport and Recreation Centre, which will open in Papanui from 10 October.

French cricket makes a comeback As the grand finale to this weekend’s 2011 Piper Heidsieck French Fest, the highly anticipated French Cricket Tournament makes itts return, capturing thee essence of the spirit and fun of Akaroa and French Fest.

From October through to January next year, a number of price changes will also be implemented. These changes will affect all services, except casual swim admission and the cost of the parent/child Swimsmart programme. The changes, which vary according to the service, were outlined in the Council’s Annual Plan, which sets out the Council’s budget for the coming year and how it will be spent.

There are twelve teams entered into the event, including the inaugural champions, the New Zealand Army Band. They will be defending their title against the Mayor’s Invitational Team, teams from the Royal New Zealand Navy, Piper Heidsieck and others. To help even the playing field, each team will feature a member of Canterbury’s first class cricket team, the Canterbury Wizards.

Mr Bailey says, “These price increases are unfortunately necessary to cover the rising cost of providing these services. Even with the price increases, however, the Council’s Recreation and Sports services are still great value for money and continue to be supported by rates.” For a full list of prices, visit: www.ccc.govt.nz and go Recreation and Sport Centre notices.

The incumbent: Ruth Dyson, Labour.

EARTHQUAKE-related issues are at the top of the agenda when candidates for the Port Hills electorate discuss the big local issues at this year’s election. Much of the area is still white zone or has only recently turned green. Issues around land viability, home ownership and insurance are of great importance to many residents. Long held by Labour’s Ruth Dyson, the electorate and its predecessors - the former Banks Peninsula and Lyttelton electorates, has largely been a stronghold for her since 1993. Current National MP and cabinet minister David Carter did take Banks Peninsula off her in the 1996 election but in 1999 she won it back and has not lost since. Ms Dyson said keeping people informed

and involved in the recovery, helping businesses to create jobs and addressing difficulties faced by Port Hills homeowners would be important going forward. “There is a real disincentive for people to buy a house in the area which I think is wrong. We should be helping people to stay in their own community.” Mr Carter was complimentary of Ms Dyson’s performance and said he would campaign hard for the party vote rather than specifically on the electorate vote. He thought the Government’s earthquake response to date would be under the voters’ microscope. “On the whole I think people have respected and been appreciative of the Government response but having said that there are still issues around the speed of assessments from EQC and issues around the dif-

ficulty of getting insurance for the rebuild process.” New Zealand First candidate and former Christchurch city councillor Dennis O’Rourke said neither Labour nor National had adequately addressed issues faced by red zone home owners. He pointed out that a strategic vote for him could give the area three MPs in parliament as Mr Dyson and Mr Carter would get in on the list anyway. For Green Party candidate Joseph Burston, who received nearly 10 percent of the vote last time round, important issues included sustainable building design and infrastructure, as well as better public transport. He also thought cleaning up the Heathcote River and Estuary should be a priority post earthquake.

Family fun at Redcliffs School VISITORS to the Rugby World Cup Community Fanzone in Ferrymead this Sunday will be treated to a day of carnival fun courtesy of Redcliffs School. Redcliffs School Fair co-ordinator Nicoli FoxWaite said the event would ensure the school children wouldn’t entirely miss out on their annual fair. The school fair, one of the biggest in Christchurch, had to be cancelled because the school had been forced to leave its grounds after the June 13 earthquake. “This event is a great opportunity to bring our

scattered community together for the day, as well as to allow some displaced Christchurch businesses to join in,” Mrs Fox-Waite said. Christchurch City Council marketing manager Richard Stokes said the community fanzones were travelling to the eastern suburbs during Rugby World Cup 2011 to ensure no one missed out on the action. New Zealand will play Canada at the fanzone on Sunday. Kickoff is at 3:30pm and a large screen will be set up centre field for people to watch the rugby live.

Mt Pleasant residents oppose plan CHRISTCHURCH City Council has confirmed a third lane will be added when earthquake repairs to Main Rd between the Ferrymead bridge and McCormacks Bay causeway are completed. A council spokesperson confirmed that the extra lane for traffic heading from Sumner towards the city had already been budgeted for this financial year and would likely take place late this financial year (ending on June 30) or early next financial year. However, the Mt Pleasant Memorial Community Centre and Residents’ Association which has been opposed to the addition of the third lane since it was proposed last year, repeated its stance last week.

• W.O.F • Servicing • Repairs • Batteries • Auto Electrical • Tyres • Loan car available YOUR LOCAL

Chairperson Jocelyn Papprill said the residents association believed the extra lane would speed up traffic and make it difficult to turn on or off the road at Mt Pleasant, particularly for traffic heading from Mt Pleasant to Sumner. “We’re really concerned that by speeding traffic up you’re actually privileging cars rather than privileging a community.” Cycling advocacy group Spokes Canterbury had also previously expressed opposition to the plan.

Behind the thin blue lens Police photographer Constable Geoff Burns’ work featured prominently in a recently released book of police photographs taken after the February 22 earthquake, Christchurch 22.2 – Beyond the Cordon. Constable Burns admits his work is not for the faint hearted but says it is rewarding none the less. Tom Doudney reports.

On the scene: This shot from the book Christchurch 22.2 – Beyond the Cordon was captured by police photographer Constable Geoff Burns at the collapsed PGC building after the quake. Inset: Mr Burns.

WHEN Geoff Burns got the opportunity to combine his police work with his love of amateur photography, he jumped at the opportunity. After eight years as a police photographer (and 21 on the force) he says the rewarding nature of his job continues to motivate him despite its challenges. “I guess there is a slight amount of being removed from the subject of your surroundings because you are behind the lens and the camera does make some type of a barrier for that.” However he still has moments when it is more difficult to completely distance him-

self. “I have a young family and you definitely can’t help being slightly affected by things which may involve children or deaths of young children or the mistreatment of children and so forth.” Constable Burns tempers his emotions by focusing on doing the best he can for the victims of crime and their family members – taking the clearest images possible to tell the story of a crime scene. In the aftermath of the February 22 earthquake, he and other photographers worked in teams identifying victims amongst the rubble. With the city where he grew up now shat-

FAMOUS British leader Winston Churchill would have been proud of a small Sydenham tavern which bears his name. Churchill’s Tavern in Colombo Street took a big hit in the September 4, 2010, earthquake and was all but knocked out for good in the horrific shake of February 22. At the end of June the old structure facing onto Colombo St was demolished. However, part of the pub, a back bar, along Battersea St remained. Quakes and literary characters in memoir Chris Tobin

ERIC Beardsley’s earliest memoryy is of being at his mother’s feet as she played a piano accompanying ccompanying silent movies in a small country hall on thee West Coast. “Always at the end there was a Charlie rlie Chaplin film and she had to play fast and furious for that!” hat!” Mr Beardsley, 85, recalled at his Cashmere home last ast week. These and other memories are included ncluded in Mr Eric Beardsley’s memoir book Sliding Down wn The Hypotenuse which will be launched at the University ersity of Canterbury bookshop tomorrow. From the West Coast Mr Beardsley’s ley’s family moved to Aranui, Christchurch, where he grew rew up in the Great Depression years which shaped what at he called his left wing “radical outlook.” “They were difficult days. It (Aranui) ui) was a wilderness of sandhills and scrub. Most peoplee were unemployed and there was quite a lot of left wingg activity.” Mr Beardsley attended Christchurch hurch Boys’ High School and then went to work at Thee Press for 20 years starting as night message boy. “I always think playing rugby for Boys’ High got me the job. Hugo Freeth, the editor, said d ‘I know you from the Boys’ High first XV, can you start rt next month?’” He became a sub-editor and leader der writer working alongside such literary luminaries ass Allen Curnow, “he enlivened the place,” and James K. Baxter. “Baxter worked in the reading room m but used to come out at supper and sit with Curnow. They’d talk away; it was interesting tuning into those two.” o.” After a period in England as a Commonwealth ommonwealth Press Union travelling fellow, Mr Beardsley ley returned to The Press and supported a proposal that hat the paper’s front page be used for news, nott just

advertisements. “The directors were very much opposed. After a couple of years I thought I wanted something more.” He became the University of Canterbury’s information officer where he stayed for nearly a quarter of a century. The major subject of the moment -earthquakes- figure in his book also. Besides the Christchurch quakes he went through the Murchison 7.8 magnitude big shake of June 17, 1929. “I was in a shop at Bell Hill (a small sawmilling settlement). The owner leapt to the shelves to stop things falling out; then he grabbed me and pushed me outside the shop. Everything was crazy. “Now I’ve survived three major earthquakes.”

Christchurch following the February 22 earthquake, but it has since been patched up. Mr Watkinson said the students had proven to be remarkably resilient. “Because we are in the middle of a very badly hit area with half our families being in the red zone so many of the kids are still living in damaged houses, they don’t have flushing toilets, they’re facing uncertainty as to where they might be living. But through all that the problems haven’t really manifested

themselves at school. “The previous edition focused quite heavily on the earthquake but that’s probably quite therapeutic for the children,” Mr Watkinson said. Editor in training Penny Parkyn, 10, said she enjoyed coming up with ideas about what to put in the paper. “I like to show other people’s work and make them feel proud.” Editor in training Molly Behan, 9, said she liked talking to new students and asking what they would like to be when they grew up.

Business hub to aid recovery Come on in: A new business and community hub in Addington was officially opened on Thursday to plaudits from members of the business community. Those in attendance included Minister of Earthquake Recovery Gerry Brownlee, Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend and Westpac general manager business banking Ian Blair, pictured above. The hub, provided by Westpac, includes free office space, broadband, photocopying, videoconferencing and a corporate lounge. Mr Blair said at any time the hub could probably hold about 1000 people and as much of the use would be temporary it should be able to meet demand for its services. Photo: Tom Doudney

Highland games coming to Hororata A GROUP of Hororata locals has joined together to bring a new event to Canterbury. The first ever Hororata Highland Games, complete with caber tossing, is due to be held at the Hororata Domain on Saturday November 5. The event is the first initiative of the Hororata Community Trust, which was formed after the earthquake of September 4, 2010 caused major damage to much of the town. Trust director Mark Stewart said he was very impressed with how the small but gutsy community came together to organise such a great event and he was looking forward

to a fun day out in the name of a good cause. All proceeds are due to go towards the Hororata community. “One of the positive elements to come from so much devastation is how everyone in Canterbury has supported each other in so many ways. The Hororata Highland Games will be a great chance for people to get together with family and friends to experience a bit of Scottish frivolity and support a great little Canterbury town,” Mr Stewart said. Tickets to the Hororata Highland Games are available from Ticket Direct.

New boss for CDC TOM Hooper will take up the role of chief executive officer at the Canterbury Development Corporation (CDC) on October 3. Mr Hooper replaces Bill Luff who is leading various major projects at Solid Energy. The Canterbury Development Corporation’s is involved in economic development activity in the Canterbury region on behalf of the Christchurch City Council. Mr Hooper was previously CEO at Windflow Technology Ltd and prior to that ran various companies in the United Kingdom.

Hoon Hay School principal Lee McArthur said the group was named ‘Strive’ because they had to work extremely hard to fundraise the $4000 needed for the trip within a month and 8025 because it’s their postcode. Earthquake rebuild signed off THE $2 billion rebuild of Christchurch’s badly damaged infrastructure is taking shape with the signing of an agreement between key partners last Thursday. The partnership included the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera), the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), the Christchurch City Council and contractors Fulton Hogan, Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell, Downer Construction and City Care. Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said the agreement represented a great achievement for the city. “The infrastructure rebuild is vital for the city’s recovery and we are all working together to get the best result.” Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee also welcomed the agreement. “This is a great step forward and I am looking forward to marking future milestones in the rebuild of Christchurch.” The organizations will focus on repairing and rebuilding earthquake damaged infrastructure including roads, water, wastewater and stormwater. The agreement was a formalisation of an interim agreement signed by the same organisations on May 3.

Wrong-side drivers cause concern CANTERBURY police say the number of drivers crossing the centreline at blind bends on highways and rural roads is causing serious concern. During the weekend of September 10-11 police issued 50 infringements to motorists who crossed the centre line on a blind bend at State Highway 7 at Lewis Pass. Sergeant Hamilton of the Canterbury Highway Patrol said this site was targeted because of its crash history. “In 2007 five people were killed in three separate head-on crashes in this area. “Since then we have been actively enforcing the keep left rule and we will continue to do so as long as people keep driving on the wrong side of the road.” Sergeant Hamilton said drivers caught infringing received a $150 infringement and 20 demerits for failing to keep left.

Telling the story of ‘The Needle’ LEGENDARY rugby coach Sir Fred Allen is widely considered BOOK to be an Aucklander but in his just released biography, Fred The Needle, readers learn it is this city, Christchurch, that shaped and made him the person he is. Sir Fred grew up a skinny little kid in Phillipstown playing rugby for the Linwood club and enduring the hardship of Depression years in the 1930s. A job at Ballantynes as an errand boy helped start him on a path which led to distinguished war service, captaincy of the All Blacks and to his coaching the All Blacks. Many consider him to be the ďŹ nest rugby coach the ABs have had. Now the oldest living All Black, Sir Fred’s book shows that his war service had a marked effect on his coaching style. He didn’t get the nickname

needle for patting everyone on the back! The book is highly recommended. – Chris Tobin

importantly much more savvy as to what’s required to be competitive at this the four yearly show case for the game. Past World Cups have been blighted by massive score blow outs which have turned fans off not on. This time around, virtually every game has been a must watch. Half time is now not the time to turn off the telly and go and do something else because you can almost bet there will probably be one or two twists left in them. We have put our unique stamp on this World Cup by being a rugby mad country and let’s face it that goes right back to our origins.

We have also nurtured and developed an amazing 38 players from New Zealand who are playing for many other competing countries at this tournament. If the matches weren’t as exciting as they have been I would sit down and try and add up how many Kiwis are also involved in coaching, managing, assisting as technical advisors and liaisons officers for foreign teams playing here. At the end of this event a lot of thanks need to be made to these guys for narrowing the gap between the big boys and the minnows because this has been a real point of difference from all the previous tournaments I’ve been to.

Good spotting: Seven-year-old Julia Stewart’s weekly swim turned into an afternoon of excitement when she spied her rugby hero Sonny Bill Williams relaxing in the spa at Jellie Park last Tuesday. Julia who is a student at Cathedral Grammar School said she thought Sonny Bill was very friendly and she loved his awesome tattoo. Photo: Emily Stewart

Many thanks to the minnows!

HAVING attended five rugby World Cups you get to know how the event will pan out and you don’t really need to go to them until about quarter final time. This World Cup, so far has turned that theory right on its head. What has made this happen? Well I think there are a number of reasons why this World Cup will stay in the memories of the thousands of those who are witnessing the matches live at the grounds and the millions globally who are tuning in and have just had a feast to gorge themselves on. Perhaps the key ingredients are that the teams are far more advanced than ever before, better managed, better coached and

Saturday, 8th October – 16th October 10am - 5pm daily

DARFIELD ARTWEEK CELEBRATES ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY This year marks the is the 30th anniversary of DarďŹ eld Artweek, a great accomplishment for the Malvern Community Arts Council and their many volunteers who work extremely hard to stage this large event each October involving up to 200 ar sts. To celebrate 30 years of success a trio of exhibi ons, running concurrently in DarďŹ eld is planned, crea ng the DarďŹ eld Artweek Fes val. Free entry to all exhibi ons ensures they can be enjoyed by everyone in the community. The Arts Council has been fortunate to a ract sponsorship from the NZ 2011 Fes val Lo ery Fund and is included in the REAL New Zealand Fes val that celebrates all things New Zealand during Rugby World Cup 2011. The Arts Council are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring to Canterbury some of New Zealand’s iconic ar sts as part of the “Life Across the Plainsâ€? exhibi on to be held at the DarďŹ eld Library. This beau ful part of New Zealand has provided mo va on for many ar sts who through the years have captured the essence of our culture and the beauty of our scenery recording our history through their eyes. The exhibi on includes signiďŹ cant works from private collec ons and the Fletcher Trust Collec on. The Arts Council are very apprecia ve of all those who are loaning works. Pain ngs by Bill Su on, Rita Angus, Olivia Spencer-Bower, Sydney Lough Thompson and Austen Deans to men on a few make this exhibi on a “Real New Zealandâ€? experience.

The second exhibi on, Sister City Art at the Selwyn Gallery, DarďŹ eld, features works from Yubetsu in Hokkaido Japan, the sister district of the Malvern Community Board. Through their artwork, Yubetsu ar sts share their lives and country’s culture, fostering closer links. This colourful exhibi on includes quil ng, weaving, pain ng, cut paper work, calligraphy and photography. The works have been donated by the ar sts to raise funds for future cultural exchanges. Thirdly the iconic DarďŹ eld event, the Artweek exhibi on at the DarďŹ eld Recrea on Centre will again provide an opportunity for ar sts predominantly from Canterbury to exhibit fulďŹ lling the aim of the Malvern Community Arts Council to provide the opportunity for people to be involved in art and to encourage and promote local ar sts. Artweek sees beginners exhibi ng alongside established and well respected New Zealand ar sts such as Austen Deans, Mehrdad Tahan and Simon Edwards. The enthusiasm of arists to par cipate in Artweek has seen the exhibi on grow to 400 art pieces in a wide range of media both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional. Over the twenty nine previous exhibi ons we have seen many ar sts’ skills develop and improve. This year’s judge, Simon Edwards, is a good example of the improvement and development that is no ceable every year. Simon began exhibi ng as a student and is now an award winning ar st well established in the New Zealand art scene. The oďŹƒcial celebra on is to be held at the opening of Artweek on Friday 7th October at 7pm at the DarďŹ eld Recrea on Centre. For further details about Artweek visit www.selwyngallery.co.nz

Vouchers help Special Needs Library

Spending time: Special Needs Library educational play advisor Charlotte Ganderton plays with Max.

CHRISTCHURCH’S Special Needs Library has been given $5000 worth of petrol vouchers from BP to reward them for the amazing work they have been doing in the Canterbury region. The library has over 3000 toys on its shelves, which are lent out to a range of individuals. Clients predominantly come from referrals from health professionals or from 40 schools in Canterbury who pay an annual fee to borrow toys for students who need them. Some retirement villages also use the Library to help residents who have suffered neurological impairment. The vouchers were awarded as part of

BP’s Vouchers for Volunteers Programme, which is designed to reward volunteer groups for the work they do around the country. Educational Play advisor Charlotte Ganderton said that the vouchers had come at a great time as they were very busy. “The earthquakes meant that some clients are no longer able to drive to us so our home visit numbers are up, we also lost resources in damaged homes. “We have 45-50 volunteers who collectively work about 400 hours at the library each week. To be able to reward them is fantastic.”

Many early spring hay fever suerers assume that the forest industry’s workhorse, good old Pinus radiata, is to blame for their misery. Re red Massey University associate professor David Fountain says pine pollen can cause mild hay fever, but it doesn’t deserve its bad reputa on. The pollen grains from all pine species are very large and are produced in big quan es. But they are weak allergens and because of their size, they don’t penetrate very deeply down the branches of the airways. Auckland Allergy Clinic director Dr Vincent Crump says “ very few pa ents have clinically signiďŹ cant skin prick test reac ons to pine pollen.â€? However, if a large amount of pine pollen is inhaled, it may cause irrita on. The main tree pollen to cause allergic symptoms

ealand comes from silver birch. It starts in New Zealand being shed in mid-September in Northland and about three weeks or a month later in Southland. Even though the birch pollen season is short it commonly causes cross-reac ons to fruits, peanuts and soy in pa ents who are allergic to birch pollen. They develop oral allergy syndrome an itching inside the mouth when they eat fresh fruits, especially apple. Dr Fountain is the author of a pollen forecast that appears on the Met Service website from October each year. He says birch pollen starts being shed at around the me the radiata pollen season ends. Birch pollen is a very potent allergen and is recognised as such in the northern hemisphere. But because its grains are not as large and visible as those from pines, pines are o en unfairly blamed for their ill-eects. “Deciduous trees like birches have pollen seasons of about three weeks. And while they may make the lives of some hay fever suerers miserable, the period is too short to jus fy tree removal,â€? Dr Fountain says. Besides, our major pollen allergen producers are grasses. Their peak is just before Christmas and cause about 20 percent of the popula on to have a miserable late spring and early summer. What then should you do with the dri s of yellow pine pollen that coat your car and driveway? If it doesn’t cause you hay fever, can you make use of it in some way? Internet-based marketers claim pine pollen is ultra-rich in vitamins and minerals, raises testosterone, lowers cholesterol, improves libido, combats nappy rash and contains a steroid that combats breast and prostate cancer. “Not so fastâ€?, says Forest Owners Associa on Glen Mackie. “None of the health beneďŹ ts of pine pollen have ever been scien ďŹ cally proven, so it’s illegal in New Zealand, the United States and elsewhere for pollen marketers to make therapeu c claims about their products. And while there are no known harmful eects arising from pollen consump on, that’s not to say the pollen on your driveway is safe to eat. If you don’t like your drive to have that golden look, just hose the pollen down the drain.â€?

Help for people with hearing problems

HEALTH & BEAUTY

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 28, 2011

There’s no denying the importance of hearing. We all want to live with the full apprecia on of sound – even with a hearing impairment. The fact is the great majority of people who suffer from hearing impairment don’t have to. Thanks to modern technology, there are a variety of discreet and stylish hearing aids that help people regain their confidence in hearing and in themselves.

EAR WAX REMOVAL* No mess, no pain. Latest suction & microscope technology.

Hearing problems can be solved but the first step is to accept them. The next step, of course, is to become fully informed about your op ons so you can choose a solu on that suits you best. House of Hearing is a great place to start on your road to recovery. House of Hearing clinics provide industry leading diagnos c services, advice and independently sourced products. House of Hearing strives to improve your quality of life by taking care of the frustra ons and limita ons of untreated hearing loss.

We also offer hearing tests & hearing aids.

“Hearing loss is a problem that can develop at any me. Most o en, it is gradual and painless. You may not realise for several years that this problem is affec ng you because it develops so slowly, nevertheless it can inhibit your ability to experience the sounds and voices around you. This in turn affects your life and the lives of those around you,” said House of Hearing Audiologist and founder, Soren Thompson. If you think your hearing might be impaired, answering these ques ons is the right place to start: • Do people always comment that the volume on your TV or radio is too loud? • Have you missed visits and calls from people because you didn‘t hear the doorbell or telephone ringing? • Do you have trouble following conversa ons in crowded or noisy se ngs? • Do people tell you that you speak too loudly? If you answered yes to any of these ques ons, there is a chance that you may have some degree of hearing loss. If you do have hearing loss it helps to know that you’re not alone. In fact, you’re one of more than 400,000 people in New Zealand with a hearing loss. It‘s also reassuring to know that a properly fi ed hearing aid can improve communica on for at least 90% of people with hearing impairment. This means you can be quite confident that there is a solu on for you at House of Hearing.

Whether you are landscaping a new property or wan ng to introduce an exci ng new look to your exis ng outdoor area, concrete pavers are a good choice to add style and character to your environment. Pavers Direct has plenty of parking for vehicles and trailers. They have had many customers from southern parts such as Ashburton, Timaru, Queenstown and Dunedin. Customers are welcome to leave their trailers there while they drive into town and then pick them up with their new pavers on their way home. Much of Pavers Direct’s business comes through word of mouth and repeat business.Peter is a builder by trade, and knows about concrete and its uses in the home (and commercial) environment, and drawing on that knowledge and experience, manufactures pavers that are strong and durable, and offer long-term performance. In fact, they have been strength tested by Ag Research. The pavers come in five a rac ve colours, with the most popular ones being charcoal, sandy and terraco a, as well as plain concrete and textured aggregate. By combining colours and textures or alterna velyy using just one colour or style from the selec on, you can create unique and innova ve outdoor areas that will enhance the character and value of your property. There is usually a good supply off the stock colours available; for specific orders, or if the colour you want is temporarily out of stock, the wai ng me is one and a half weeks. Pavers Direct has recently started making a new and m popular product, garden edging – 80mm x 300mm x 50mm. Custom items such as outdoor table topss and fence capping, can also be made. The pavers come in five sizes, with the most prac cal and popular being the 500mm x 500mm. They are available in 40mm and 50mm thicknesses, with the choice depending on where the pavers are to be laid – on a driveway, for example, the 50mm is needed to carry the weightt of vehicles. They are open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm during the warmer motnhs. LINCOLN and Districts Community Care is set to benefit from a garden party fundraiser being held at Broadfield Garden on Sunday October 16. The not for profit organisation provides services including meals on wheels, a senior exercise group, a keeping warm project, installing smoke alarms and a drop-in centre. The rapid growth of Lincoln and the surrounding area has increased the demand on its services, so this is the first major fundraising event for its board. The Ellesmere Spring Fling will be held from 10am

until 4pm at the garden owned by David Hobbs at 250 Selwyn Road. The property consists of 10 acres of award winning formal and semi formal landscaped gardens including ponds, canals, hedging and rose, rhododendron and camellia gardens, along with azaleas, cherries peonies and natives. Tickets are $25 from Lincoln and Districts Community Care Association, phone 3252007, or Ray White Lincoln and Rolleston, New World Lincoln, and Paper Plus Merivale and Hornby.

Top jazz coming to Christchurch MUSIC lovers in need of a jazz “fix’’ will get just that when some of the best jazz and blues talent in New Zealand descends on Christchurch in early November. They are coming to take part in a special weekend of jazz at the Hagley Park Events Village on November 5 and 6. “As everyone knows we had to cancel the New Zealand International Jazz & Blues Festival this year because of the quakes, but we didn’t want people to miss out completely. “We were determined to do something to bring a bit of jazz back into people’s lives and came up with this idea of having a mini New Zealand International Jazz & Blues Festival in Hagley Park to kick off New Zealand Cup & Show Week,” festival director Jodi Wright said. Over the two days of Taste Jazz/Taste Blues 12 bands will perform at the events village - and most of the performances will be free thanks to the generosity of sponsors such as Cavell Leith Law, the Christchurch City Council, the Canterbury Community Trust, the Lion Foundation, Pub Charity, and Southern Trust. The festivities will kick off at 11.30am on Saturday, November 5, with Taste Jazz, which will feature great jazz grooves from the likes of the Christchurch Youth Orchestra, Nola Mills and the Tom Rainey Quartet, Sumo Jazz, and the Reuben Bradley Quartet, which won the 2011 music award for Best Jazz Album. In the evening jazz chanteuse Jennine Bailey will perform a very special Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald concert in the Hagley Park Events dome. Tickets for

this evening concert are available for $25 from DASH tickets. On the Sunday Christchurch’s blues stalwarts will occupy centre stage, with performances from One Foot in the Blues, Jon Hooker and Billy Vallance, Runaround Sue, Midge Marsden and the Harry Harrison Band, and others. “It’s going to a fun weekend and a great opportunity for people to relax and unwind after a very stressful year,” Ms Wright said. “They can get jazz fix and hopefully that will keep them going until the 2012 New Zealand International Jazz & Blues Festival in mid-April.” The programme for the full festival is still being finalised but will feature a special tribute concert to the music of Duke Ellington, presented by James Morrison and the Christchurch Jazzharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Tom Rainey. Tickets for this April 14 concert at CBS Arena are currently on sale through Ticketek.

Boost for Court rebuild AN enthusiastic crowd enjoyed ‘Ngaio Marsh – Crime Queen’ at the Aurora Centre, Burnside, on Monday evening. More than $10,000 was raised in what was a special fundraising screening for The Court Theatre rebuild in Addington. The film’s director, Aileen O’Sullivan said many people came together to make the evening successful, which was heartwarming and encouraging.

Kate McRae JANE EYRE

It was with some trepidation that I went to see Jane Eyre this week. As a small child it was the first film I was ever taken to. It hadn’t occurred to my mother, that the 19th century story about love, guilt, betrayal - and of course madness - might not be suitable for the very young. It utterly terrified me, and was made all the worse by the fact that it was followed shortly afterwards (in my mind anyway) by a second outing to see Wuthering Heights - it’s a wonder I ever set foot in a cinema again. I am pleased to report that unlike that 1970s version I was taken to, this 2011 version of Jane Eyre directed by Californian filmmaker Cary Fukunaga, shouldn’t give anyone nightmares. Fukunaga is best known as a cinematographer, and his attention to detail has produced a beautifully atmospheric and evocative period drama, rich with all the gothic melodrama Charlotte Bronte intended. He was helped by a great script from Moira Buffini (Tamara Drew). She kept the dialogue fresh but also mindful of the book’s original intentions. Buffini

does depart from the book in one crucial area, the story begins partway through Jane’s life and the events leading up to her traumatic departure from Thornfield Hall are shown in flashback. While some purists might question such a radical departure, it worked extremely well as a narrative device for the big screen, heightening the tension and mystery of Jane’s story. The cast, is headed by Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) as Jane and Michael Fassbender (Inglorious Basterds) as Mr Rochester with both Jamie Bell and Dame Judi Dench in significant supporting roles. The film rests on the chemistry between the two leads. As characters, these two are among the most memorable in English literature: Jane for her fierce determination to be independent and Rochester for his tortured brooding. Wasikowska and Fassbender look the part but more importantly deliver great performances and never let us forget that whatever else it is Jane Eyre remains one of the great literary love stories of all time.

Royal Canine Pet Expo Having a Ball: Malcolm played by Ian Lester and Doreen played by Nikki Bleyendaal.

TOP Dog Theatre is presenting Having a Ball by Alan Bleasdale, at The Dome, North Hagley Park Events Village from October 10 to 17. Having a Ball is a funny adult comedy and an award-winning play set in the north-west of England. Three men anxiously wait their turn for a vasectomy operation in a private clinic where nose-jobs and face-lifts are the stock-in-trade but, even before their operations begin, hilarious complications set in. None more so when each of them discovers that the surgeon is a woman. Throw in a cynical nurse and a wife who drinks and knows too much and the result is a riotous, knock-out comedy!
