“I think he is out of touch with the situation in Christchurch with his pay rise.”

“I think if they do a really good job then a slight pay increase could be deemed as fair, but a large increase is ridiculous.”

“It is stupid.”

“Whether the raise was deserved or not, the public relations has been handled appallingly. Both as to how it was announced and in dealing with the public outcry.”

“They could pay five people $100,000 each to do the same job.”

“Pretty ridiculous and very unfair as other people are struggling financially and emotionally.”

Earthquake damage closes Cave Rock

Container shopping in Merivale

THE Christchurch City Council has fenced off Sumner’s Cave Rock and is advising people to stay off and not to climb it or enter the cave. Due to recent earthquakes, some of the rock has cracked and there is a danger of rock fall. The signal mast structure at the top of Cave Rock has also suffered some damage. Signs have been erected advising people to keep off the rocks for their safety, and fencing has been erected near the pavement at the base of the rock and on the rock.

a retail precinct instead. “Our income insurance ran out after six months and we had to do something.” Mr Thornley said businesses had been handpicked but demand had been up and down. The precinct will be known as Merivale Boutique. Peter Morrison of Petersen’s Jewellery started trading from his containerised shop at the precinct on December 19. His previous premises at 37 New Regent St were closed after the February 22 quake. “I found it difficult to get space to lease, some want leases for 10 to 13 years, and I saw this when I was driving past. “I had a look and signed on the spot.” He said business had not been as busy as it had been in the inner city but he expected this would change. “It’s a question of getting people to know we are here.” Café Metro which fronts Papanui Rd had been even busier than at its previous site on the corner of Kilmore and Colombo streets, owner Liz Barry said. She owns Strawberry Fare, formerly in Peterborough St, which opened at 19 Bealey Avenue at the beginning of this month. She said this business had also been very busy. Merivale Boutique is a Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority project and will operate until April 2016. A grand opening with a fashion parade will be held on February 11. Further up Papanui Rd in Merivale, Quinn’s fashion and accessory store has been using several containers to showcase it’s clothing.

THE first suburban precinct of containerised shops will have a formal opening in Merivale next month. The central city Restart shops in quake damaged City Mall have been operating since late October but the Merivale venture is the first block of shipping container shops to be established in the suburbs. The owner of the property on which six businesses will be operating, Justin Thornley, said establishing the privately funded precinct was not easy. “The challenges building with containers are a lot harder and expensive than people understand.” Asked the cost Mr Thornley said “a lot.” The containers have been fully lined and insulated. Mr Thornley owned a bed and breakfast house on the Merivale Lane/Papanui Road site which was badly damaged in the September 4 earthquake. The Boxing Day 2010 quake struck a killer blow to the building and it was demolished in February last year. Initially Mr Thornley had plans to establish a four level accommodation complex on the site but this was thwarted by the February 2011 quake and he opted for

Dunedin proposal rubbished Tom Doudney

“FANTASY” and “political play” are the words Christchurch business leaders are using to best describe Dunedin City councillor Lee Vandervis’ claim that Dunedin represents a better option for rebuilding than Christchurch. In an opinion piece in the Otago Daily Times last week, Mr Vandervis claimed that “low earthquake-risk Dunedin” represented a better option than rebuilding in “swampy sandy Christchurch”. However Christchurch business leaders have insisted there is no question of the rebuild heading south and Canterbury Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend said Mr Vandervis’ comments were “political play”. “A Dunedin City Councillor can have his wish list and he’s perfectly entitled to do so but the reality is quite different.” Geography, history and existing infrastructure all favoured rebuilding in Christchurch over Dunedin, he said, while business people would want to stay where

their families and equity were. “Christchurch is going to be the safest, most modern, best presented city in New Zealand and will be well equipped to assume an even greater role in terms of economic activity as the centre of the South Island.” Christchurch International Airport chief executive Jim Boult said Mr Vandervis’ ideas were “fantasy” and dismissed his suggestion that Dunedin International Airport could be upgraded as a viable alternative to Christchurch. “We have close to a billion dollars worth of assets out here at the airport. To simply say you’re going to repeat that somewhere else is a pipe dream.” On Tuesday Mr Vandervis told Mainland Press he had received a “pretty anti and angry” response from Christchurch residents but didn’t back down from his earlier comments except to say his words had been slightly misconstrued. “I’m not asking for Christchurch people and residents to move to Dunedin. It’s the

vital infrastructure that Government is paying for. They need to look at where is the best place to rebuild.” Mr Vandervis said many other South Island “political types” had privately expressed agreement with his views and he had sent a copy of the article to Prime Minister John Key. Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker’s response when he said Christchurch residents would want to stay in “Crusaders’ territory” had been “a shame”, Mr Vandervis said. “In the end Mayor Parker just basically resorted to rugby rivalry as a put down of my opinion piece and I felt that was rather disappointing. This is not about rivalry this is about people’s lives and the quality of them going forward.” Mayor Parker declined to comment further on the matter. Have your say What do you think? Christchurch or Dunedin? Let us know email: editor@mainlandpress.co.nz

Irish influx boosts rebuild and football Tom Doudney

HARD times in Ireland and demand for skilled labour in Christchurch have led to an influx of Irish into the city and spurred the creation of a new Gaelic football competition. The mixed social league has been arranged by the Christchurch Gaelic Athletic Association (CGAA). CGAA organiser Fiona Walsh said a large number of Irish people arriving in recent months had provided the numbers to get the league up and running. With Ireland’s own economy struggling, Christchurch’s rebuild had brought over many Irish looking for work. Christchurch Irish Society president Natasha Taylor said there had been a very noticeable increase in the society’s numbers, particularly in young men, and agreed that economic factors were the most likely cause.

“The society has had about 50 new members in the last three months. We have only about 350 members so that is a big increase. “I work in a bank myself and there are quite a few who have come through the door who are Irish now so there is certainly a change.” March Construction general manager Nick Carvel said he was aware of the trend. “I’ve noticed that since the Christchurch rebuild started to get underway there are quite a number of people coming here from Ireland and making themselves available for employment.” One new arrival to have joined the Gaelic football league was recent Irish College graduate Tom Jordan, 21, who arrived in October to work as a quantity surveyor for Fletchers EQR. The lack of work back home had made the move to

Christchurch an easy decision and he was glad to be able to play his national sport. “When you meet a load of Irish people here playing an Irish sport it makes it easier to be so far away from home.” Ms Walsh said the CGAA was hoping to make the league annual. Although most players were Irish, a few New Zealanders and other nationalities were involved and it was hoped more might take an interest in the sport. The league will run for six weeks, starting this Thursday evening.

Letter to the editor Australians at war I HAVE just finished reading the article (Mainland Press, December 21) about Frank Glen’s book ‘Australians at war in New Zealand’. I’m not surprised many (most?) Australians are unaware that Australians had fought in New Zealand during the 19th century. During my studies at the University of Melbourne I did a course called Australians at War. One person in my tutorial wanted to know why New Zealanders celebrated Anzac Day! What did they have to do with it? He was quite shocked when I pointed out that without the New Zealanders there would be no such word as ‘Anzac’. With that level of knowledge about an event that is considered very important by Australians, is it surprising that people don’t know about Australian troops fighting in New Zealand? I’m sure not many New Zealanders are aware that Australian troops fought here, either! Pamela Stokes Richmond

Turning green image Brooklands brigade battles on to bitter end into reality

Tight knit crew: Brooklands Fire Brigade members share such close bonds that they don’t want to contemplate the day when their brigade will cease to exist. From left: Barry Eggelton, fire chief John Reed, Donald Crawford, Simon Lyford, Shane Lloyd-Jones, Michael Jackson and Renata Sadlier. Photo: Gina McKenzie

Gina McKenzie TIME may be running out for the Brooklands Volunteer Fire Station but brigade members are battling on through one of the busiest seasons on record at their redzoned 38-year-old station north of Christchurch. The 25 member volunteer brigade has been in high demand over the summer as it is one of the few stations in the area with a water tanker. Fire chief John Reed said members were still reeling over the decision late last year to redzone the entire seaside suburb which gives residents until April 2013 to vacate the area. “We had four call outs last night. We’re the busiest we’ve ever been. “It seems unreal that we might not be here in a year’s time when we’re out there fighting fires. We don’t even want to consider it because the station is so important to us. “It’s much more than just a fire station. It’s the heart of our community. Mr Reed said the station would continue to operate until the number of members dipped below the 12 required to keep the station functioning. When the station did close the closest remaining fire stations would be in Kaiapoi and St Albans, neither of which had a water tanker. Donald Crawford said he could still recall Prime Minister John Key’s visit to Brooklands after the September 2010 earthquake when he promised to

rebuild the town. “He thanked us for our hard work and promised us that Brooklands would be rebuilt. It just doesn’t make sense to us that we are in the redzone when nearby areas are green and we didn’t have much damage in February.” Mr Crawford said the loss of the station affected not just the members themselves but the entire community as well. “Our families and children have all grown up together through the social activities we have here at the station. To have to tell them there won’t be any more Christmas parties, gatherings or raft races will be really hard to do. “There’s a real sense of camaraderie that goes through the generations. We’re not going to find this anywhere else.” Mr Lyford said he wanted to know why Brooklands had been red-zoned and he remained concerned that the land would be redeveloped into a subdivision at a later date. “There are no answers to our questions. We still can’t get any reasons for why we have to leave. If we just knew why then it would make it easier. “If the area was turned into a park or a reserve then at least we could come back here with our families but we’re worried that it will be turned into an expensive subdivision in a few years time where none of us could afford to buy land.”

Tom Doudney FOR Green Party member Eugenie Sage, of Diamond Harbour, the reality of being a new MP took a while to fully sink in. “I was so focused on the campaign and increasing the party vote that it didn’t become real until I got to Wellington,” she said. The Greens got more than 11 percent of the party vote in the November election, bringing Ms Sage into parliament by virtue of her position at number six on the party list. Ms Sage was part of the Environment Canterbury (ECan) council sacked by the National Government in April 2010. After that, she spent more than a year working as an environmental contractor conducting research and writing report before until June last year when she became involved full time with the Greens campaign. She has been made a spokesperson for conservation, Resource Management Act issues, local government and associate spokesperson for water – areas she thought were becoming increasingly important to the public. “Our 100 percent pure clean and green is a major marketing tool overseas, we base our whole agricultural sector, in terms of exports, on that,” she said. “We’re undermining and compromising that brand by not cleaning up our rivers, by the cuts to conservation, by the number of threatened species, our lack of funding of adequate pest control – so we really need to make the brand image real.”

We’re undermining and compromising the brand by not cleaning up our rivers

Eugenie Sage

She remained critical of the lack of a democratically elected regional council in Canterbury due to the sacking of ECan councillors. “It’s a basic constitutional principle that you have no taxation without representation.” However, she was hopeful that the Greens would be able to find enough common ground with the Government to work together on some issues.

SUMNER may have been hit hard by last year’s earthquakes but the beach is as busy this summer at the weekends as it has been in previous seasons, says Sumner Surf Lifesaving Club president Blair Quane. “We’re not seeing any drop-off in numbers at the beach over the weekends and for us there are a few other factors that have come into play. With Cave Rock shut and people not allowed to climb on it or be around it we have to keep an eye on that for rock fall hazards – also Shag Rock, or what’s left of it.” Water quality was another factor that needed to be considered, Mr Quane said. “If we get any earthquakes we need to check that sewage hasn’t come into the estuary from any broken pipes leaking into the Avon and Heathcote rivers. On December 23 the beach was shut for 24 hours after the quakes to make sure the pipes were OK and no sewage had gone into the estuary. If it gets in there it comes right across the beach.” Relaxing: Patrick McLuskie with his son and daughter Amelia and William enjoying a Sea conditions this summer were fairly typical with day at Sumner beach. cross channels creating rips that can take swimmers out by Cave Rock. There was also quite a lot of sand movement so it was a changing environment, he said. Sumner’s surf lifesavers were having to be reasonably flexible at present, Mr Quane said, due to their clubrooms being severely damaged in the earthquakes. Half of the building has now been demolished. “We’re working out of containers and tents,” he said. Weekdays on Sumner beach have been quieter so far this season, according to head guard and professional surf lifesaver Kim Hendrie, who was on patrol on Wednesday. “Numbers are lower so we’d like to encourage people to come out to the beach for a swim – it’s a great stress relief,” she said. Professional surf lifesavers will be patrolling the flagged areas of Sumner beach from 10am to 8pm on week days until the end of January, with the club’s volunteer surf lifesavers patrolling from 1pm to 5pm on Saturdays and 11am to 5pm on Sundays until March. Working to prevent inter-generational crime ‘It has been a battle to get our voices heard’, Verna McFelin. Chris Tobin

CHRISTCHURCH woman Verna McFelin hopes winning two major awards recently will help to publicise and improve the plight of children whose parents are serving time in prison. Mrs McFelin was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to the community in the New Years honours list. Two weeks before she received an Every Child Counts award from the Minister for Social Development, Paula Bennett. Mrs McFelin’s organisation Pillars which she started 23 years ago provides mentoring and support programmes including a nationwide helpline for the children of prison inmates. Approximately 20,000 New Zealand children have a parent in prison. For Christchurch the number is 800 – the hidden people, Mrs McFelin called them. “It has been a battle to get our voices heard,” she said. We’ve just got a new manual going to schools and politicians Working With The Families and Children of Prisoners. With that just released and the honours I’ve been awarded it is now putting them (the children) on the agenda.” She said the Government had to take the matter seriously since the work of her organisation could break the inter-generational cycle of families going to prison and save the country millions of dollars. “More than 1000 children have gone through the Pillars mentoring and youth programmes and only a handful, I know of, have ended up in prison, and not for serious crimes,” she said. Mrs McFelin started Pillars when her husband went to prison and she was left with four children to care for aged from six months to 12 years.

“There was hand-out support then but not hand-up support and nothing to equip people with the stigma and shame.” Children could end up not coping or being bullied, she said, and they carried the guilt for a crime which they did not commit. “My six-year-old son was playing cops and robbers and he was told he had to play the robber because his father was in prison.” A Christian conversion helped motivate Mrs McFelin when she started Pillars and rather than considering herself a victim, she turned her situation into a positive experience. “It became a journey,” she said. Pillars now has a staff of seven, based in St Albans and South Auckland with Mrs McFelin the chief executive backed up by 70 volunteers. A schools’ programme is about to begin in Auckland with St Peter’s College students mentoring the children at an Otara primary school where 18 of the parents are in prison. “We’re going to roll that programme out in Christchurch this year too. It’s involves a group of Catholic colleges who are part of an Edmund Rice group.” Mrs McFelin said a research project by Pillars recently found the children of prisoners could be “ticking time bombs” but she remained optimistic. “I think we could halve the crime rate if we put support funding into these children. Our research found a large percentage of prisoners were the children of prisoners.” The support and information website for Pillars is justus.org.nz

Air New Zealand named New grant for small businesses welcomed best airline again BUSINESS recovery agency Recover Canterbury is welcoming a new grant aimed at providing relief for small businesses. The Independent Advice for Small Business grant of up to $750 is to help small and family-run businesses access professional legal and accounting advice in relation to the effect of earthquakes on their business. It is available to any business with fewer than 10 employees that has been negatively impacted by the earthquakes and has a genuine need for financial assistance in order to access professional advice. Recover Canterbury’s 23 business recovery coordinators, who worked directly with earthquake-affected businesses, reported that some of the key issues facing businesses included staffing issues, increasing operating costs, leases, insurance and raising capital. “These are complex issues and in order to tackle these issues it is vital

Christchurch earthquakes, and how it had assisted the affected communities. Chief executive officer Rob Fyfe, who will collect the award at a ceremony in Singapore on February 13, said the announcement was a huge thrill. “Winning ATW Airline of the Year in 2010 was in my view one of the greatest accolades that had ever been bestowed on Air New Zealand – in our industry it’s equivalent to winning an Oscar. To pick up the award again this year is simply outstanding. “For Air New Zealand to again be recognised as the number-one airline in competition with the world’s biggest and best airlines is testament to the continued hard work and passion of our 11,500 staff throughout the world,” Mr Fyfe said. The award reflected their commitment to delivering a uniquely Kiwi experience in one of the world’s most competitive industries, he said.

NEW Zealand’s national carrier has won Air Transport World’s prestigious Airline of the Year award for the second time in three years. This is the first time in the nearly 40-year history of the awards that an airline has won the award twice in three years. Air New Zealand has won more ATW awards than any other airline in the past decade. Air New Zealand’s industry-leading innovation and motivation of its staff, which had resulted in exceptional performance across the airline in market position, customer service, fiscal management and operational safety, impressed the ATW judges. They described the airline as an industry trendsetter in a number of areas including product innovation and social media. The airline’s environmental initiatives including its commitment to operating a very young and fuel-efficient fleet were also noted. Air New Zealand was commended for the way it had dealt with several natural disasters including the

businesses get the right advice,” Recover Canterbury communications manager Pip Tschudin said. “But for many businesses cashflow is tight and accessing that advice can be a challenge in itself. This Red Cross Independent Advice for Small Business grant will be a welcome relief for many small businesses as it will allow them to connect with their professional advisors to help them overcome the challenges they are facing.” Applications for the Independent Advice for Small Business grant are available through Recover Canterbury. Any business that wants to apply for the grant can contact Recover Canterbury on 0800 50 50 96 or at www. recovercanterbury.co.nz. The grant has been approved by the New Zealand Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Commission, which was established to oversee the disbursement of the more than $73 million donated to the New Zealand Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal.

Council keeps AA credit rating CHRISTCHURCH City Council has retained its AA financial rating from international credit rating agency Standard and Poor’s. The rating keeps the council among the highest-rated local authorities in New Zealand. The other AA-rated local authorities are Auckland Council, Wellington City Council, Greater Wellington Regional Council, New Plymouth District Council and Hutt City Council. Standard and Poor’s said the council remained on negative outlook because of the lack of insurance available to cover council assets, a negative global outlook and the agency’s view that there was uncertainty in Christchurch’s local economy around the speed with which the rebuild could progress and the exact extent of Central Government’s contribution to the rebuild. The agency also praised the council’s financial management as a “very positive rating factor” and said it had demonstrated significant responsiveness to events. This included implementing recovery efforts and back-up plans, and a five-year earthquake rates levy to support the council’s weaker budgetary position. They stated that this is a good outcome given the events of the past year.

CHRISTCHURCH continues to attract international students, despite the earthquakes, with some 60 students from around the world starting their English language studies at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) on Monday. New students from China, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and Korea joined a group of 12 from the Korean Bible University, which regularly sends students to CPIT for four-week English and New Zealand study courses. Students who are studying for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exams at the end of the month were already working hard to gain their qualifications in time to enrol in mainstream programmes at CPIT. CPIT international director Beth Knowles said all the

students were full of energy after their summer holidays and keen to get started on their studies. “It’s going to be an interesting year and there are very positive signs that it will be a great year,” she said. “We have five Japanese groups coming in February to study English for example. CPIT was recently selected as the new Cambridge English Examination Centre for Christchurch, which will attract new international students to Canterbury and also upskill workers who are here for the rebuild and recovery of our city.” Student You Jin Kim, 21, from the Korean Bible University, said she was looking forward to studying at CPIT. “I came here to enhance my English and to travel to another country,” she said. “It is very exciting!”

TC1 (green-grey), Port Hills and Banks Peninsula From 1 February, our rebuild and repair programme will be accelerated. Your Claims Case Manager will contact you to advise you when your home will be assessed. Then, a scope of work will be created for the repair or rebuild of your home and a repair/ rebuild solutions manager will be assigned.

Until we have certainty over your land zoning we will not be able to complete a detailed assessment of your home, unless it is uninhabitable. We will continue to work closely with CERA to understand land decisions and progress our customers’ claims.

All detailed assessments of our customers’ homes in the residential red zones are now complete. Offers have been sent to those in the Kaiapoi and initial Christchurch City red zones, and will be sent to Brooklands residents this month.

2,100 homes remain in the residential white zone. Working with the Christchurch City Council and EQC to rezone these properties is one of CERA’s highest priorities. Until we have certainty about your land zoning we will not be able to complete a detailed assessment of your home, unless it is uninhabitable.

TC2 and TC3 (green-yellow and green-blue) EQC is currently assessing land damage. Once we understand the implications of any necessary land remediation, we will organise geotechnical assessments where and when required. If additional foundation work is required the associated cost will be included in the scope of work. We will continue to work closely with EQC and the Department of Building and Housing to understand land remediation and foundation requirements and progress our customers’ claims.

NEXT STEPS FOR OUR NON-EQC CUSTOMERS If your claim is deemed non-EQC this means that you have damage to parts of your property that are not insured by EQC, but may be covered by your policy with us. For example: - Drives, paths, fences and bridges - Drains, channels, tunnels and cuttings unless used to connect parts of one or more residential buildings - External swimming and spa pools - Paving and other permanent artificial surfaces. You will need to lodge a claim with us for damage to these parts of your property. Non-EQC repairs are currently in progress. You will be contacted when we are able to proceed with your repairs.

IF YOUR PROPERTY HAS SUSTAINED FURTHER DAMAGE FROM RECENT AFTERSHOCKS, PLEASE LODGE A NEW CLAIM WITH EQC AND/OR US.

New venue for special service

Animals of all sorts and their human companions gathered for seasonal worship in Hagley Park on December 22. The annual service for animals was held in the Geo Dome, replacing the ChristChurch Cathedral as the usual venue. The Christmas story was played out amid bleating, squeaking, braying and barking. My gardening plans and tips for 2012

H

appy New Year! I certainly hope you had the chance to sit back and relax over the holidays and were able to enjoy some special me in your garden or out and about somewhere peaceful. My garden certainly makes me a be er person. The immense joy I get from seeing something grow, flourish, and thrive is intoxica ng. Luckily, I have no really close neighbours, so over the past few weeks I have been in the garden at some very odd mes of the day. Some mes, it's first thing I do in the morning whilst s ll in my PJs and other mes, it's the last thing I do at night, checking that I have turned the hose off whilst in my high heels and frock a er a dinner party. My husband o en thinks we have visitors as from the house side of the hedge he can hear me talking, but no one else’s voices can be heard. When he pokes his head through to the garden, he o en finds me talking to the sweet peas, strawberries, and tomatoes. At the moment in the vegetable patch, there is plenty to do, which normally I would find a chore, but this summer I am ge ng so much more out of my garden than I am pu ng into it on an emo onal level; hence, it’s not all about the harvest. It’s seeing seeds germinate, flower, and flourish that gives me the thrill. Plants provide a connec on and reassurance that life goes on, no ma er what the world throws at you. My garden is a place of solitude. It seems more peaceful now than the previous seasons and I seem happier in it. The weeds don’t seem to bother me as much, my disastrous harvest of shallots would normally have sent me into orbit, but this year I don’t seem overly bothered.

What I am doing in the vege patch at the moment: Garlic – Harvest the new season's garlic. Use a fork to ease the bulbs out of the soil and leave to dry on top of the soil or in a shed that gets plenty of light. The outer skin needs to turn to a papery white texture before the crop can be stored. Once dry, plait stems together and hang. Tomatoes – Stake and e up tomato plants, remove any big lower leaves that are in the way when watering or if they are taking up too much Rachel Vogan space underneath the plants. The Happy Gardener Remove laterals as soon as Ripe for picking: It’s time to harvest the garlic in your vege patch. you see them; these prevent the plant from producing a maximum amount of fruit. Water Brussel sprouts - I just love Brussel sprouts! If you haven’t planted your sprouts yet, you need to get a move on. Generally, plants deeply a couple of mes a week. we encourage you to plant during December to January for Basil – Keep plan ng basil. It’s a li le late to grow from seed an early winter crop. It’s now too late to sow seeds of plants now, as by the me the seed has germinated the season will for this year, but you can plant seedlings, which you will find be almost over, so I suggest you hunt down some punnets in your garden centre now. I have planted two varie es, ‘Tight laden with ready grown seedlings. I have planted some head,’ which is a popular tradi onal green variety and the red basil in my containers with my new black-leaved dahlias this variety called ‘Red Rib’. ‘Red Rib’ is doing par cularly well. Choose a sunny posi on away from strong winds. Be season and the contrast of lime and black is simply lovely. prepared to stake stems if you live in a windy area.

Feed your lawn

Potatoes – It’s not too late to plant spuds. Remember, they take about three to four months to mature. Plan ng now will mean you should have a supply for the colder months ahead. Look out for Rua, Agria, and Ilam Hardy. Mole up the soil around spuds that are already planted. Do this by raking up the soil between the row up to cover the bo om half of the leaves of the potatoes. This protects the crops from sunlight and ensures a bigger harvest. Carrots – I am about to sow my fourth crop for the season. The first two sowing back in spring were a disaster as the cat insisted on using the fresh soil from the carrot rows as a latrine! URGH! The first me this happened, I sort of laughed, but the second me I was livid as it meant that I had to touch his mess and I would have to buy carrots for Christmas Day, which no gardening commentator worth their salt wants to have to do. On sowing the third lot of seed, I ‘cat proofed’ the area with bird ne ng, chicken ne ng, and s cks to prevent the four-pawed feline notching up a three nil score against me! This me, I will be doing the same although once the carrots were up, he isn’t interested in the rows any more (typical male). Cabbage, Cauliflower, and Broccoli (Brassicas) – Hold off plan ng any of these for another month or so except for Brussel sprouts, that is, for a couple of reasons. One is that they take up a lot of space, and if your garden is anything like mine, space is a premium at the moment. Brassicas tend to bolt in the hot weather too, so wait un l mid-February if you can. Un l next week. Happy Gardening!

A beau ful lawn does not come without some effort. Depending upon what type of soil you have, the amount of effort will vary. For instance when raising trees and shrubs, sandy or a gravel base soil is great. Landscape plants like well drained soiled. A lawn on the other hand is different. Lawn grasses grow constantly throughout the growing season, and need an ample supply of both nutrients and water. The most basic of lawn care ps includes regular watering, and fer liza on is required to keep a lawn beau ful. If you’re lucky enough to have a lawn that was originally planted in good rich topsoil, you won’t have to work near as hard as somebody like me, who has a lawn that is planted in sandy gravel. The soil at our house has li le nutri onal value, nor does it have the ability to retain any amount of moisture. Lawns are one area where a li le clay in the soil is a good thing. Of course standing water is not good, but having soil that has the ability to retain some moisture is helpful. If you happen to bee m installing a new lawn, here’s a news flash from my lawn care ps that will make all the differencee in the world: Add lots of organic ma er beforee you install your new lawn if you have sand orr o gravel type soil. The easiest way to do this is to er find some good rich topsoil and spread that over your exis ng soil. Because most lawn grasses grow so vigorously, they need addi onal amounts of nutrients added in order to stay looking nice. Just use one of the four step progra mmes offered by the fer lizer companies. Most of these programmes also include weed control along with the fer lizer. By Michael J. McGroarty www.freeplants.com www.gardening-ar cles.com

Protect your crops: Make sure your vege patches are ‘cat-proofed’ and safe from any other animals, as it’s really frustrating to replant seeds once they’re growing nicely.

A new system was introduced this year to allow people to 'secure a seat' ahead of the festival's start. Festival director Jo Blair said the new booking system would ensure people didn’t miss out on the five shows, which will be staged in the dome venue. "If people have certain shows they desperately want to see, then we recommend they go online and secure their spot. Fifty per cent of seats will still be available on the day and these will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, as in previous years." The five evening shows for which people can secure a seat all take place at either The Press Club or the dome, two of the core venues for this year's festival. There are free shows on the

Sun safety a must in New Zealand

S

kin cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand, so it's important to protect your skin from the sun. The high rates of skin cancer are due to a number of factors including the strength of the ultraviolet rays (UVR) that reaches New Zealand during the months of daylight saving, low ozone values, our outdoor lifestyle, the high propor on of people with fair skin in our popula on, and our tendency to “seek the sun”. However, skin cancer can be preventable. Over 90 per cent of all skin cancer cases in high UVR environments like our country are a ributed to excess exposure to UVR. Skin cancers include the following: Melanoma, the least common, but the most serious form of skin cancer; Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), which is easily treated if found early, but can be fatal if le untreated; and Basal cell carcinoma (BCC), which is the most common and least dangerous skin

cancer. BCC can be serious as surgery may be needed and get burned on the face and neck than on any other part of scarring will occur if le untreated. the body, so a good hat is important. Free your mind SOMETIMES, it seems like so much is happening that it makes life challenging. There is so much to get done, so many things to think about, so many li le decisions to make - too much! Then people bring up other stuff, other ideas, or other sugges ons. How does one find clarity? Take some me for you. This may be as li le as 10 minutes walking in a garden, or si ng watching the waves of the sea. Focus on the flowers or the sound of the waves. Allow your mind to slow down and let the stuff in your head get crowded out by the beauty of flowers, or the sound of the waves. Take a few extra minutes and know that life carries on regardless of what you do. Relax into freedom to decide what is important right now and follow through. anne e@emo onaltherapy.co.nz.

THE organiser of an Australasian athletics meet to be held at Papanui High School hopes that the event will encourage local teenagers to stick with athletics. The second Papanui Toc H Australian athletics meet will be held next Wednesday evening at Papanui High School and will see 50 young Christchurch athletes compete against 20 of their Australian counterparts. Papanui Toc H event organiser Steve Lyons said research showed that many young people dropped out of athletics at around the age 14 or 15. “We have organised this international meet to encourage our young athletes to keep competing.” Events begin at 5.30pm and include a full range of track and field including hammer, pole vault, and javelin. The meeting will conclude with the 4 x 100 metre relay followed by a shared meal. This initiative began in January last year when a representative athletics team of 14 and 15 years old from Queensland attended an athletics meeting in Dunedin. While in Christchurch, they were invited to train and compete against athletes from the Papanui Toc H Athletics Club, which spawned the idea to make it an annual event. Athletes from the Christchurch Avon and University athletics clubs will join Papanui Toc H athletes in representing the city.
