Our goal is to be united and help each other build up our city. Our own goal this year is to save more money because we never know what happens. k
Dr Rod Carr, University of Canterbury vice-chancellor I think first of all I’d like kee Christchurch to focus on all that it i is and all that it will be and that’s t’s about the large part of the city ityy which is able to get on. We needd too recognise that there are some parts artts of the city that still need support porrt and they’re deserving of support porrt but we also need to embrace 20122 for the opportunities that it offers. fferss.

Bob Parker, Mayor of Christchurch My aspirations would be that central government affirms the central city rebuild plan that was crafted by the people of this city to create a visionary 21st century city that is safe, sustainable and has a people focused city centre that is a platform for great business investment. Also that the residential rebuild, which we are all so concerned about in terms of the time it’s taking because of the aftershocks, is well and truly established, creating thousands of additional jobs and increasing the quality of life for tens of thousands of people in this city.
Brenda Brren Higgins, office administrator, 44, Leeston I’ve I’vve just started a new job so I’m hoping it’s going to be great. I hope we get our house fixed because wee are still waiting and our house got a lot of damage. I would like to see Christchurch rebuilt so people can n rebuild their lives. I just hope it’s going to be a great year for everybody because 2011 was an eye opener, it made people realise what was really important and I think in 2012 we will see people going oppe inn a really positive direction.

Sandcastle contest to cheer up Brighton A FUN-FILLED day of sandcastle building will give quake-hit eastern suburbs residents a boost when the inaugural Christchurch sandcastle building competition kicks off at New Brighton beach on Saturday. The event, organised by the Pegasus Bay Charitable Trust, was originally planned for
March 2011, but was postponed following the February 22 earthquake. Trust spokesperson Brian Keeley said he hoped that the event would provide a fun day out for families and make use of New Brighton Beach, which Mr Keeley described as the city’s “most under-utilised asset”. Mr Keeley said 12 American sandcastle builders who won the US open sandcastle competition at Imperial Beach in San Diego, California would be
flying in to recreate their winning designs over the weekend. Adults and corporate teams will compete on Saturday followed by events for children and family groups on Sunday. Mr Keeley said he hoped that up to 10,000 people would attend the event, which would also feature children’s activities and food stalls. The event will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 6pm south of New Brighton Pier. Visit http://www.newzealandsandcastlecompetition. co.nz/ for more information. See also page 10.

Parker says anger is misdirected Tom Doudney
MAYOR of Christchurch Bob Parker says public anger over Christchurch City Council chief executive Tony Marryatt’s controversial pay rise should be Bob Parker Tony Marryatt directed solely at the councillors and himself. Mayor Parker again defended Mr Marryatt’s $70,000 rise, which he said had been blown out of proportion by the media during a slow news period. Retaining Mr Marryatt was of crucial importance, he said, to the council’s internal functioning and losing him would, therefore, be “one of the worst things that we could do to the city at this moment”. He said it would take a new chief executive months to get up to speed with the system and would likely Courtesy cars Oil changes lead to other disruptive changes among senior staff. Full mechanical repairs “If you want to destroy this organisation right Brake & clutch repairs now, if that was your goal, you would get rid of the Transmission flush service chief executive, which would decimate your general managers, which would pull the heart out of this Tyres & batteries organisation’s ability to do its job.” Petrol & diesel servicing The mayor said appointing and remunerating a chief executive was one of the most important tasks of the council and the time to deal with that would be in two years time when the next local body elections PHONE 03 349 7813 were held. 2/193 Waterloo Road, Hornby “If you don’t like that call and that call overshadows every other thing we do in this organisation to the degree that you think that that’s the reason to get rid of people, then that’s what you should do. That’s democracy.” Mr Parker said he had anticipated some frustration and anger over the pay rise, but had been surprised by the scale of it. “I would not be doing my job if the only decisions I made were the ones that I thought would be popular,” he said. The council had gone through a thorough review process, which had found that Mr Marryatt had an exceptionally high approval rating from council staff and that the increase was appropriate for the market rate. The mayor put the intensity of criticism of Mr Marryatt down to a combination of heightened public stress levels, political battles, and a “small but vocal” group of business people.

Full house: Business is booming for Bealey Avenue motel owners Roger and Dianne Lott who are encouraged by the return of tourists to the city.
Tourists return to ‘exciting’ city
FITZGERALD MOTORS

SUMMER has heralded the return of tourists to Roger and Dianne Lott’s central city motel, which was previously full of EQC, insurance and rebuild workers. Mr Lott said that over the summer break, he had noticed an increase in the number of tourists visiting the city and was heartened by Lonely Planet’s recent travel comment that described Christchurch as an “exciting” city. “For eight to nine weeks, we were completely full every night with earthquake-related workers and had to turn people away, but over the summer we’ve had a lot more tourists staying here. “These positive comments can only be good news for tourism and for Christchurch. We need to focus on encouraging people back to the city.” Mrs Lott said they noticed an increase in Indian and European visitors over the summer months and these guests were really impressed with the Restart container mall. “They have told us that they love the new mall and couldn’t believe how well designed it is. The museum has also been really popular with some guests visiting twice. “There is still plenty for them to see and do in the city and they use it as a base to explore surrounding areas like Akaroa and Hamner. “The only comment some of them
have had is that they would like to see more souvenir shops in the central city.” Mr Lott said that when the rebuild workers returned next month, it would once again become more difficult for national and international tourists to secure central accommodation. “Last year we had to send people to Kaiapoi, Rangiora, and Akaroa. I’ve heard of some operators having to send people to Ashburton. “It’s a matter of planning ahead and making a reservation in advance to secure a room if you want to stay in the centre of the city.” Inbound Tour Operators’ Council chief executive Lesley Immink said that she was delighted by the positive endorsement from Lonely Planet and said her organisation had been encouraging independent travellers in order to overcome the accommodation shortages. “We have had to change course and encourage independent travellers until there are more rooms available.” Ms Immink said two new hotels are set to be built in the CBD this year and she hoped that the Christchurch City Council would develop a new convention centre as soon as possible. “It is vital to get a convention centre up and running since that would amount to about 30,000 conference attendees per year.”

Pay rise issue fuelled by frustration I am sure Christchurch City Council chief executive Tony Marryatt is not looking forward to the council meeting on February 1 when protesters intend making known their displeasure at his $70,000 pay rise to $538,529. As readers of Mainland Press will read in today’s issue, Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker says those from the public who are unhappy with the increase should be directing their anger towards the elected members of council who thought Mr Marryatt’s work record over the past year warranted a pay rise and voted to give him one. Mr Parker was among them. He also says that the whole matter has been blown out of proportion and that the council has to be competitive with pay rates. Unpalatable as it is for many, the fact is that chief executives of councils around the country receive handsome remunerations. I wish it was the same for journalists. The Auckland Council CEO receives $675,000; Wellington’s gets $419,230. In Mr Marryatt’s case, the timing and general
handling of his pay rise was, in my view, unsatisfactory. Also Mr Marryatt does not seem to have the PR ability in dealing with the media. Yet, in his defence he could say that he is not there to be ‘media friendly’, that he is not an elected member of council – rather that he is an employee of council answerable only to his bosses, the elected members, who thought he deserved a pay rise. As the one-year anniversary of the February 22 earthquake horror approaches, it is noticeable that the mood of the city has changed since that time. With aftershocks up to six and five in magnitude rumbling on, the neighbourly spirit and general air of co-operation and support have been replaced by frustration, squabbling and anger. Perhaps the Marryatt furore is all symptomatic of that mood.
Special mosaic for port bar Creativity revealed: Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker and guests applaud the unveiling of a new mosaic outside the new Porthole container bar in Lyttelton on Saturday. The occasion marked the official opening of the new bar on the site Volcano Café occupied before it was demolished. Bar owners Mike Dunlay and Chris Stead commissioned local artist Caroline Pratt to design a mosaic to link Lyttelton's past and future. The unveiling followed a Maori blessing conducted by Charlie Olsen.

TC1 (green-grey), Port Hills and Banks Peninsula From 1 February, our rebuild and repair programme will be accelerated. Your Claims Case Manager will contact you to advise you when your home will be assessed. Then, a scope of work will be created for the repair or rebuild of your home and a repair/ rebuild solutions manager will be assigned.
Until we have certainty over your land zoning we will not be able to complete a detailed assessment of your home, unless it is uninhabitable. We will continue to work closely with CERA to understand land decisions and progress our customers’ claims.
All detailed assessments of our customers’ homes in the residential red zones are now complete. Offers have been sent to those in the Kaiapoi and initial Christchurch City red zones, and will be sent to Brooklands residents this month.
2,100 homes remain in the residential white zone. Working with the Christchurch City Council and EQC to rezone these properties is one of CERA’s highest priorities. Until we have certainty about your land zoning we will not be able to complete a detailed assessment of your home, unless it is uninhabitable.
TC2 and TC3 (green-yellow and green-blue) EQC is currently assessing land damage. Once we understand the implications of any necessary land remediation, we will organise geotechnical assessments where and when required. If additional foundation work is required the associated cost will be included in the scope of work. We will continue to work closely with EQC and the Department of Building and Housing to understand land remediation and foundation requirements and progress our customers’ claims.
NEXT STEPS FOR OUR NON-EQC CUSTOMERS If your claim is deemed non-EQC this means that you have damage to parts of your property that are not insured by EQC, but may be covered by your policy with us. For example: - Drives, paths, fences and bridges - Drains, channels, tunnels and cuttings unless used to connect parts of one or more residential buildings - External swimming and spa pools - Paving and other permanent artificial surfaces. You will need to lodge a claim with us for damage to these parts of your property. Non-EQC repairs are currently in progress. You will be contacted when we are able to proceed with your repairs.
IF YOUR PROPERTY HAS SUSTAINED FURTHER DAMAGE FROM RECENT AFTERSHOCKS, PLEASE LODGE A NEW CLAIM WITH EQC AND/OR US.

Councillors want decision THINKING OF SELLING? on call centre revised Wishing everyone Chris Tobin
SEVEN Christchurch city councillors, three community board chairs and nine other community board members have written to council chief executive Tony Marryatt asking him to reconsider a management decision to relocate the council’s after-hours call centre to Palmerston North. Organiser of the letter Cr Yani Johanson said he believed the decision should have been made by the city council, not management. “I found out about the decision via a letter to the editor of The Press. I want a report to council with the options so elected councillors can make the decision. It’s the right thing to do. “It’s symbolic. The decision to move out of Christchurch is an incredibly bad look.” The council’s decision was made for earthquake-related “business continuity” reasons. Six part-time staff are expected to lose their jobs at council-owned lines company Orion. Three have opted for redundancy. Orion has held the contract for the council’s after-hours call centre since 2002, and the present contract,
services.” The councillors who signed the letter besides Cr Johanson were Sally Buck, Glenn Livingstone, Tim Carter, Helen Broughton, Jimmy Chen and Jamie Gough. The community board chairs were Linda Stewart (Burwood/Pegasus), Phil Clearwater (Spreydon/ Heathcote), and Mike Mora ((Riccarton Wigram).

It was a decision that had not been taken lightly. “As a result of patronage losses after the earthquakes in 2011, the 29 Airport and 10 Harewood/ Cashmere services are no longer commercially viable. It has been a difficult decision to make, considering Red Bus’ long standing commitment to our customers on these services,” he said. PRESERVING the Edmonds Factory Gardens in Woolston while battling ongoing vandalism has been a way of life for Jenny and John Hoskin on a daily basis for over 20 years. The pair live almost opposite the gardens and formed a volunteer group called Friends of the Edmonds Factory Gardens after the controversial demolition of the Edmonds Factory in 1990. Mrs Hoskin said local residents were passionate about saving the garden as they considered it as both an important historical landmark and an extension of their own backyards. “It’s such a special place for us that we couldn’t lose it. It didn’t make sense to destroy it when there were so few green spaces left in the area. “If the garden wasn’t here, it would just be another industrial block without any history or beauty.” The garden has become enmeshed in the couple’s daily life, with Mr Hoskin faithfully opening and closing the garden gates each day. “I make sure I’m there a bit early, so if anyone arrives exactly at opening time they can wander straight in.” Every Saturday, their volunteer group spends five hours gardening, but they also find themselves engaged in a constant battle with acts of vandalism and graffiti. “Some of it is so senseless like snapping all the roses off, stealing a fountain, or taking fish out of the pond. When we find graffiti we paint straight over it since that’s the best way to deal with it.”
Ray of sunshine: John and Jenny Hoskin recently won an award from Volunteering Canterbury for their efforts to preserve the historic Edmonds Factory Gardens in Ferry Road, Woolston.
In March 2010, the group registered with the Christchurch City Council’s graffiti programme and since then they have removed graffiti from the toilet block, fences, and playground equipment. “With younger people getting involved in our volunteer group, we hope that this will have a wider impact on reducing vandalism and encouraging the next generation to get
involved in preserving the garden.” Extra hours are being put in by the group over summer to get the garden into top shape for their annual garden party at the end of February, which is part of the Festival of Flowers. “It’s one of the highlights of the year for us and it’s wonderful when people discover the garden for the first time.”

THE YMCA is celebrating 150 years since it was set up in Christchurch. The Young Men’s Christian Association was founded by George Williams in London in 1844 out of a concern to provide more wholesome activities for young men who had moved to the cities during the Industrial Revolution. Christchurch is among 16 YMCA Associations in New Zealand and one of the oldest as it was set up in 1862. YMCA Christchurch partnership manager Dave Goldsworthy said it started out with Bible studies and Sunday school, but evolved to offer a wide range of activities and facilities for people of all ages, races, and religions. It now includes accommodation for tourists and Christchurch locals in need, holiday and youth development programmes, outdoor education, camps,
a pre-school, and two health and fitness centres with 2500 members between them. Mr Goldsworthy said the initiatives were born out of a desire to meet needs in the community. The YMCA has premises in the city, Bishopdale, Colombo Street, and a camp at Wainui on Akaroa harbour. Mr Goldsworthy said anniversary celebrations were planned throughout this year including a golf tournament, an exercise challenge for older adults, and reunions for workers and volunteers in September. “It’s going to be an exciting year of celebration and looking at what we’ve achieved within the community,” Mr Goldsworthy said. He said last year had been a tough one with the earthquakes forcing them out of their city headquarters for six months, but they were keen to play their part in the Christchurch rebuild.

A BUILDING redevelopment at the Air Force Museum in Wigram has offered an opportunity to investigate the early history of the historic site. Originally part of Plumpton Park, it was first used for hare coursing and then horse racing and trotting when a horse track Windmill Centre, Riccarton was built in 1884. Racing took place regularly for the next two decades or so until the owners, Canterbury Park Club, took up the lease of the present Addington site in January 1922, just prior to OPEN late night the acquisition of the airfield by the New Zealand Government. Thursdays until 8pm • Saturday 9-4pm Last month a brief archaeological Proudly NZ owned & 90% NZ Made investigation by research officer and former archaeologist Simon Moody and keeper of photographs Matthew O’Sullivan was undertaken in a rubbish pit feature uncovered by Chch’s contractors. The large pit, clearly visible in early photographs of the aerodrome, was Drycleaner

situated east of the museum’s main aircraft hall. It was originally within the boundary of the racecourse and measured some 30 metres across and about a metre deep. What was uncovered was mostly rubbish, but said a lot about the site. Many pieces of porcelain with the Canterbury Jockey Club and Metropolitan Trotting Club badge were found, as well as bottles and other ceramics, two horse shoes, and a stirrup. This material was probably dumped during the life of the racecourse. Other less specific material had also been dumped there later and large quantities of scrap metal, tools, tyres, corrugated iron, barbed wire, and fence posts made up much of the fill. The pit was finally covered over during the mid-1930s when the airfield was levelled and developed, as it cannot be seen in contemporary aerial photographs. The museum will record the investigation and photographs of it and preserve the best examples of what was recovered as important evidence of the early use of RNZAF Base Wigram before it became an aerodrome.

Payments for plots, interment costs THE Christchurch City Council will pay for both the plot and interment costs of the earthquake victims at the memorial site being developed at the Avonhead Park Cemetery, says Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker. “The council sent a letter to the families of victims before Christmas saying it would not cover the full costs. It would only cover the interment costs and the victims’ families would have to pay the $349.60 cost for the plot. The council has now apologised saying that it had made a mistake. “I was only made aware of this mistake today and I, too, am upset. I am extremely sorry for the distress this has caused the families and want to reassure them that the Council will meet the costs of the plots, Mr Parker said.

Heart strings: Mandy Pickering’s husband Jason designed the Heart Strings guitars, which will accompany her on a nationwide tour.
STARS in Their Eyes winner Mandy Pickering has incorporated eight guitars that commemorate the loss of buildings and lives during the Canterbury earthquakes into her nationwide tour. The guitars were handcrafted by Pickering’s fatherin-law Bruce using timber from historic buildings such as the Arts Centre and Homebush. Each guitar has a unique design that reflects the history of the timber used to craft it. An eighth guitar was also created following the February 22 earthquake. Named Kia Kaha, it is painted pure white and has a scroll with the names of those who died encased within the guitar body. It will feature in an exhibition at the Canterbury Museum later this year. The tour is designed to promote her second album, which features original songs, some inspired by the devastation she has witnessed over the past year in her home town and the strength of the human spirit revealed as a result.
Pickering said the tour would give people around the country a chance to see, touch, and hear the guitars before they are auctioned to support the revival of the local arts community. “The project is so meaningful to us, especially as Christchurch is my home town and my family and I have experienced our own personal loss, including the loss of our home, but what I love about this project is all about hope and positivity. Following the tour, the guitars will be auctioned at a fundraising dinner at Armstrong Prestige Mercedes Showroom in Christchurch on February 24. Bidding will open two weeks prior to the event via Trade Me with the guitars going to the highest bids on the night, live or on the website. Pickering will perform in Christchurch on Sunday at Melton Estate. For more information on the tour visit www.mandypickering.com.

Top tomato ps
Two tomato recipes that will inspire you
Pukekohe tomato grower and New Zealand’s Young Hor culturist of the Year Ben Smith, 29, shares his top five ps for cooking tomatoes this summer: 1. Struggling with under–ripe or over ripe tomatoes? To ripen, place in a brown paper bag with one ripe tomato and keep at room temperature and watch the magic happen. Under-ripe and s ll not going red? Then use for making chutney, soups, or sauces. Never ripen tomatoes in the fridge. 2. Use plum tomatoes on the barbecue. Their firm fresh flesh keeps them on the skewer, rather than falling between the hot bars. 3. To skin or not to skin? For salads or grilling, no. If the dish is sieved or strained then there is also no need to skin. Chunky pasta sauce from fresh tomatoes, yes. 4. A teaspoon of sugar in cooked tomatoes (sauces, chutneys, purees, and so on) will bring out the sweetness. 5. To intensify that tomato flavour, try oven or sun-drying them. For more special ps and tasty tomato recipes, visit www.vegetables.co.nz
Tomatoes are in abundant supply at this me of year and are the perfect produce when catering for the whole family. Standard round tomatoes remain New Zealand’s favourite with the plum, outdoor, cherry, low acid, and vine tomatoes becoming increasingly popular. To choose the best tomatoes, look for the deep red varie es because the redder the tomato, the sweeter the fruit.

Waitangi Day celebrations to boost Kaiapoi spirits WAITANGI Day celebrations are expected to lift spirits in Kaiapoi on February 6 following an earthquake-related break last year. The free event features a formal treaty signing, live theatre, a Maori cultural performance, food stalls, and children’s activities. Wellbeing North Canterbury events coordinator Theresa Stevens said the event will provide a much needed boost for quake-weary Kaiapoi residents and visitors from Christchurch.
“We would like people to visit Kaiapoi and see that we are still here and going strong. Highlights include a cultural performance by Maori dance group Ko Tane. The group will give a shortened version of their cultural performance and children will enjoy necklace making, flax weaving, and stone carving activities. There will also be performances by local school kapa haka groups. The event runs from 10am till 2pm at Trousselot Park in Charles Street.

Coming champ HAMISH Clark, a year 4 student at New Brighton Catholic School, took the first step towards getting a black belt in taekwondo when he earned his yellow tips last month. Hamish, 8, started taekwondo last year after watching his brother practising the sport. He enjoys the serious nature of the sport and practises taekwondo twice a week in Shirley. Hamish plans to continue on to black belt level and hopes to visit South Korea, the home of taekwondo, in the future. Good luck Hamish! We’re sure you will achieve your goals!

Burnside named NZ’s top bowling club Zealand and world championship winners such as Greg Lawson and Andrew Kelly. Last year’s winners Shaun Scott and Greg Ruaporo will team up, as will the successful women’s combination of Val Smith and threetime women’s world champion Jo Edwards. Another player to watch will be Burnside’s own Tayla Bruce, who has been selected for the New Zealand Trans Tasman Under 18 team to compete against Australia in March. The competition, which begins at 1.40pm, will be divided into eight sections with six teams in each.
THE Burnside Bowling Club is on top of the world, or at least the country, after being awarded Club of the Year for 2010/2011 by Bowls New Zealand. Club president Neil Cornelius said that he was very pleased with the honour. “What it does is reflect on the number of very good people we’ve got in our club at Burnside. They’re always prepared to put their hand up and do the work that has got to be done.” The club was also Club of the Year for 2008 and in June last year was awarded Gold Check status for best practice by Bowls New Zealand. The honour came as the club prepared to host its annual SBS Stewart Buttar Pairs Tournament on Friday. “I think this year we’ve probably got maybe the strongest field we’ve had,” Mr Cornelius said. The field will feature four Australian representatives plus many New

CHRISTCHURCH resident David Henderson has been named as one of New Zealand’s favourite volunteer cricket umpires in a nationwide search to reward unsung heroes of club cricket. The Specsavers and New Zealand Cricket competition rewarded Mr Henderson as one of six regional finalists in recognition of his support of cricket and commitment to the community. New Zealand’s Favourite Kiwi Cricket Umpire competition ran throughout November and December and called for individuals to nominate their favourite cricket umpire. Mr Henderson said he was quite taken aback that someone took the time to nominate him. “I’ve been playing cricket since I was five years old, so it’s a sport that has been so much a part of my life,” he said. “After getting injured I decided to try my hand

at umpiring, which I now love just as much as playing because you get to see the young cricketers coming through and really develop as players.” Mr Henderson has been umpiring for six years and is part of the cricket umpire association. New Zealand International cricket umpire and member of the Elite Panel of International Cricket Council Umpires Tony Hill said there had been some very deserving entries, but Mr Henderson had stood out “because of his tireless commitment and passion for club cricket”. The overall winner will be announced at the end of January and prizes include a one-on-one training session with a high-profile New Zealand umpire, $1000 worth of prize money, and a family pass to an international cricket game in New Zealand.
