‘Stay vigilant’ the message

Summertime: It was all action on Waikuku Beach last weekend as crowds flocked there to enjoy the balmy weather.

WHILE many Cantabrians continue enjoying their holidays and the warm summer weather has the community participating in a range of activities, the essential services say people still need to be vigilant and take responsibility for their personal safety. In targeting the liquor ban, bar behaviour and again introducing the low tolerance (4km) for speeding over the Christmas break, the Police have been pleased with the results. “For Canterbury Police it has been really good. The drivers by and large have behaved themselves, no fatalities in the road toll period and no serious crashes of note,” Senior Sergeant Phil Newton said.

With the roads remaining busy with many families still on holiday and university and schools not starting till February, the message from the police is simple: slow down, drive to the conditions and don’t drink and drive. Christchurch Hospital’s emergency department has seen an influx of patients over the holiday break. The emergency department treated more than 3500 people over 16 days with 41 per cent of them admitted to hospital. Broken bones, lacerations and head knocks were some of the common Injuries the department saw. “It’s amazing how people forget common sense at times. We know we should have helmets on, we know that we shouldn’t

drink and drive, we know that we should look after our mates when they are drunk and be careful on the beach, but sometimes we forget,” Christchurch Hospital’s emergency medicine Professor Mike Ardagh said. On the water the Canterbury Surf Lifesavers have also had a busy time with thousands flocking to the beaches. With the surf up and the Waimakariri in flood, conditions have been very dangerous on Canterbury’s exposed beaches. With another two months of summer left, the life guards’ message is also simple: stay between the flags, listen to what the life guards tell you, make sure you follow the instructions and read the signs – they are there for a reason.

Aranui Primary School students train with a Warrior

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE

Photo: Jessica Schaap Christmas treat: Aranui Primary school rugby and league players carried out a training session with 26-year-old Warrior Manu Vatuvei, who was fresh from the Fight for Life. Vatuvei, seen leading the pupils on a run, agreed to visit the school as a Christmas treat for the pupils, who had gone through

some difficult times due to the Christchurch earthquakes and proposed school closure. Aranui Primary School principal Mike Allen said the children were excited and thrilled to have such a major sports star coming to see them. “There were plenty of eager rugby and rugby

Innovation precinct set to grow

RASPBERRIES

Gracie Fea gracie.fea@ctv.co.nz

A SHORTAGE in skilled technology workers is preventing Christchurch’s innovative growth, according to an industry leader. However, Colin Anderson, co-leader of the Enterprise Precinct and Innovation Campus (EPIC), said the innovation precinct set out in the central city blueprint would be crucial to bucking that trend. He said EPIC, phase one of the innovation precinct, was key to “transforming creative flows into commercial reality”. The shared central-city space, which housed 18 ICT and high-tech companies, opened in November and was just a 10th of the size of the planned precinct. Mr Anderson believed the precinct would attract a lot of business opportunities to Christchurch and be an enabler for both attracting and retaining staff. “One of the key problems we’ve got for the growth of the ICT and high-tech sector is we haven’t got enough staff to sustain the growth that’s coming in the companies, so most ICT companies in Canterbury are constrained because they can’t get enough resource.” The innovation precinct would attract new people, both graduates to stay in the city and also migrants with the right skill sets, he said. Mr Anderson said EPIC had already proved to be a major draw card for the international tech industry and recently hosted 15 tech

PUNNET

investors from Silicon Valley in the United States. Christchurch was leading the way, with a number of initiatives around the country trying to get innovation precincts off the ground, especially in Auckland, he said. “The difference we have here is we’ve already started, we’ve already got this one over the line and we have an impetus to develop the next one because it’s part of a government city rebuild initiative so we have a very strong imperative behind us to make something happen.” EPIC phase two would cover 25,000 square metres in the central city and incorporate a high-tech conference centre including a 250 to 300-seat conference venue with break-out meeting rooms to hold mini-conferences. They also hoped to incorporate retail, including bars, cafes and restaurants as well as crèches and gyms. “A lot of it is about creating an environment where people mix and share ideas and are encouraged to collaborate and work together. For example, half a dozen companies working here together to tackle a global market that they couldn’t possibly tackle on their own to give them better depth of resources and capability.” EPIC would review the proposal sent to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment early this year.

Mr Anderson said most of the staff in the sector were earning relatively high incomes and it was beneficial to have them close to the retail precinct. The high-tech sector had a relatively young population of employees and would attract a lot of young people back to Christchurch, he said.

Canterbury’s the place to be GO west young man was the old catch cry but it’s the east of Canterbury that has seen 2013 bring the best weather to those who dearly needed some holiday respite. The trailers were crammed with all manner of camping equipment, or the boat or caravan was hitched to the SUV with everything but the kitchen sink and away the family went to greener pastures. Perhaps as they did the return trip this week they may just have thought how much better the weather was at home. It doesn’t seem fair that the favoured holiday spots both north and south had to contend with the vagaries of the weather. Cantabrians deserved to have a good holiday break wherever they chose to go, but again the hardiest of you that took respite away from home were tested. Camping these days resembles a house shift, as does the daily trip to the park, beach or the river. It’s no longer just your togs, towel and the sunscreen. Chairs, mats, shelter tents, umbrellas, pillows, gigantic chilly bins filled with all manner of picnic food. Toys including boogie boards, sports equipment, kites, skimmers, remote-controlled toys, cell phones, books, the paper and even the dog all get lugged down and gaily spread out. Now the dog is usually the first problem because the first thing they want to do is poop and I wonder why it is the owners always seem to think that no one is watching. Then, despite running over the hot sand and enjoying liquid refreshments themselves, how come they forget about their panting dog’s needs. As the teams settle in, no one ever sits still for very long. It’s a constant moving feast;

swimming, playing, eating, fighting, talking, all demanding attention. Does no one sit still anymore and just do nothing? One can get very tired sitting in a chair just looking at all the action when one is meant to be on holiday. The meals and constant washing on the lines in the motor camps tells me someone is still working. How come everyone thanks the male (who only cooks the meat on the barbie) for the lovely meal and what about the dishes? Those who started back at work this week might be wondering how it all went by so fast, why they are still tired and broke, because going on holiday is not cheap or relaxing. One thing is for sure, children love holiday time, love the outdoors and all the attention and the time the family spend together. It has been lovely to see all the positive action happening over these last two weeks. Must be something to do with the politicians and bureaucrats all being on their long breaks, that we can focus on things much closer to home and enjoy the summer season. Although there is still a lot of holiday time to be had and a lot of our community is still moving around, it’s incumbent on us all to remember our limits and how to look after ourselves. As we wend our way into 2013 with all the challenges we will face, let’s try to enjoy the balmy days and the longer daylight hours. It’s a time for family and friends and the new-found neighbours. And as the mantra for this year, let’s keep our Canterbury spirit alive and keep fighting for what we believe in.

the Ultimate Borneo Experience WIN Your chance to win the Ultimate Borneo Experience as a new connection between Christchurch and Malaysia is launched on Sunday

Showers Balustrades Splash backs Mirrors When Air Asia pulled out of Christchurch, it had a direct impact on the number of people travelling to Malaysia and created the perception that Malaysia is not accessible from Christchurch. Now in partnership with Singapore airlines, Tourism Malaysia has reintroduced its Christchurch-Malaysia route. This also fits in with Christchurch International Airport’s key message encouraging locals to support their airport. Around 155,000 South Island passengers leaving for an overseas jaunt or business trip in the year to June 2012 went through Auckland. The decision to not depart through Christchurch caused a loss of $8 million worth of airport charges for Christchurch International Airport as it strived to boost its passenger numbers post-earthquakes. Christchurch International Airport aeronautical business development manager, Matthew Findlay, hoped more international passengers would travel through Christchurch. “If Cantabrians started consciously leaving on overseas trips from Christchurch it would boost the airport’s passenger numbers, attract new airlines, increase the choice and reduce airfares over time.” The launch of the new connection will see the Minister of Sarawak Tourism in Christchurch next week for a Trade and Media event, and the Sarawak Cultural Village Dancers performing at the Re:Start Mall on Sunday, January 13, between 10am and 4pm. It will be a chance to see first-hand what Malaysia has to offer as a holiday destination, and you and a friend could be jetting off with Singapore Airlines to Kuching, Sarawak to experience all the wonders Malaysia Borneo has to offer as a holiday choice.

Prize includes:

Return flights for two with Singapore Airlines from Christchurch International Airport Transfers to and from airport and hotel in Kuching, Sarawak; three nights’ stay at the Grand Margareta hotel, Kuching including breakfast; three nights’ stay at the Damai Beach Resort including breakfast. You will have the chance to indulge in the city life of historical Kuching before relaxing in luxury on the private beach of the Damai Beach Resort. WORK will begin shortly on a local alcohol policy that would give the Christchurch City Council the power to develop and implement new liquor laws. The council’s strategic policy unit manager, Alan Bywater, said the council and community had very little control over alcohol laws and the policy would provide an opportunity to match the particular needs Christchurch faced. It will come into force under alcohol reform legislation passed in December and would give local communities a say on alcohol licensing and licence locations. “We’re very pleased to see it’s now finally come through Parliament and we can get on and get that Local Alcohol Policy (LAP) created.” However, National Addiction Centre director Doug Sellman said the bill sounded better than what it actually was and it would be an enormous amount of hard work. Professor Sellman said the government needed to take the lead, due to the enormous power of the alcohol industry. “Essentially, what the government is doing is saying we’re not going to take on the alcohol industry, it’s up to you and your communities. The alcohol industry will employ top lawyers

to slug it out with communities.” The council hoped to have the LAP in place by October and was happy the buck had been passed onto them. “Being able to have a different response and tailor that response to the specifics of an area is really important. Certainly the council is supportive of that and happy to play that role,” Mr Bywater said. “Obviously we’ll be keeping a good eye on what’s happening elsewhere and try to make sure our policy is as watertight as we can to try to avoid those costs to the council and the community.” The legislation wouldn’t allow the community to have a say on individual licensing applications but would allow them to have an input into the policy, which would influence things like locations and opening hours. Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said while the legislation would give communities more input, it would not stop alcohol-related harm. “At the end of the day you cannot legislate your way through these things. It still comes back to individual responsibility, and until we adjust our view and the way we treat alcohol as a society, we’re probably going to still have problems with it.”

NEW AND USED SPARE PARTS

People still not driving to earthquake conditions Jessica Schaap jessica.s@mainlandpress.co.nz DRIVERS not adjusting to Christchurch’s post-earthquake road conditions has resulted in greater need for car repairs, according to local car mechanics. Fitzgerald Avenue Pit Stop mechanic Walter Smith said about six months after the Christchurch 2010/2011 earthquakes he noticed an increase of about 50 per cent more repairs for suspension and panel work underneath cars but this gradually decreased. He said the reason for the increase was motorists not driving to conditions. “If people really drove to the conditions they wouldn’t have half the problems,” he said. The problem was not as bad as it used to be but he had noticed there was still an increase in car repairs due to the road works. He recommended motorists did not speed and had their vehicles serviced often. Woolston resident Samara Tribe had her car’s shock absorbers replaced a few weeks ago. Although it was a 1990 car it was in good condition when she bought it in November 2011, but she noticed it quickly deteriorated. She said she had been driving to the speed limits and had driven a lot in affected areas such as Bexley and Brighton. “When I got it [the car], it was fine. “I was doing 30kph in a 30kkph zone and I was still managing to hit potholes. I started to notice that it was getting worse. “Our family home is in Woolston and my mum had been driving around normally and she even had to get her shocks replaced.” According to Wayne Crabbe from Edgeware Automotive, shocks last longer if the roads are in good condition, typically for about 150,000kms. Partmaster manager Paul Creighton noticed an increase in car parts sold since the Christchurch earthquakes but was unable to provide figures to prove it. “We are definitely selling more shock

absorbers, ball joint and CV joints,” he said. The Christchurch City Council’s general manager city environment, Jane Parfitt, said there were more complaints about the roads in Christchurch due to the earthquakes. “We are asking people to be patient as the permanent repairs have been programmed, together with wastewater and stormwater repairs, over an extended period. “All road users are asked to exercise patience and caution during our rebuild process.” The council advised people to drive to the conditions and take extra care in areas of road construction and repair. “Be aware that cyclists may not be able to keep as far left as normal, observe speed limits and temporary speed limits, look ahead for obstacles on the roads, allow extra time for the possibility of detours or heavy traffic and be alert for pedestrians walking on the road.” Despite the increase in sales of car suspension parts, Vehicle Transport New Zealand reported there was not an increase in people failing their warrants of fitness and the percentage of vehicles failing the test had remained at about 20 to 30 per cent. AA Insurance has seen a small increase in the incidence rate of impact and collision claims in Christchurch since September 2010. “We can’t say with certainty that this is to do with the quality of the roads; however, it is likely that a proportion are caused by drivers not driving to the appropriate conditions. Generally, accidents are caused by drivers being distracted or not following the rules of the road, more than the condition of the car or the road itself.” Head Customer Relations, Suzanne Wolton said. The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT) is responsible for rebuilding the city’s infrastructure following the earthquakes. SCIRT plans to have fixed the roads within five years. buy in to the future

Camping near the river? If you’re camping near a river these holidays, be aware of changing river levels. On duty: Sergeant Shaun Ruddle with local children at an orphanage in Afghanistan.

Christmas in Afghanistan for NZ soldiers Tom Doudney

CHRISTMAS can be a tough time for family members to be apart - especially when one of them is serving with the New Zealand Defence Force in Afghanistan. Such has been the case this holiday period for Sergeant Shaun Ruddle, who is currently stationed with the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Bamyan Province where six New Zealanders lost their lives last year. Sgt Ruddle, who grew up in Hornby and was based at Burnham Military Camp, has been in the army for 10 years and was deployed to Afghanistan for the first time around four months ago. While it was never easy being separated from his wife Zoe while serving overseas, it came with the territory. “This is our third deployment that we’ve gone through together and I’m very lucky to have a very supportive wife. With what we do she’s very understanding.” Family would be very much in the minds of the more than 250 New Zealand troops serving on foreign soil around the world, he said. “It’s the families back home that help the

soldiers get home with phone calls and things like that. “In my opinion - we call it the home fires that are burning – that’s what really helps the soldiers do what they’ve got to do.” Sgt Ruddle said it had been “a real eyeopener” seeing how far the Bamyan region had come in areas where reconstruction efforts supported by the PRT and other agencies were more concentrated, as compared to the more remote areas. The deaths of five New Zealanders in two separate attacks shortly before his arrival had been sobering but he and his fellow soldiers did the job because it was what they wanted to do. All the same, awareness of the danger was always in the back of his mind. “In my opinion it always should be because of the sheer fact that it keeps you on your toes.” New Zealand forces should now have seen their last Christmas in Afghanistan, with all 192 personnel scheduled to pull out in April. Asked about New Year’s resolutions, Sergeant Ruddle said he had only one. “To get my boys and myself home safe.”

Crusaders return to home turf

Black is back

Going, going, gone

Commemoration service: A crowd of about 15,000 people attended a memorial service in Hagley Park on the first anniversary of the February 22, 2011 earthquake. The crowd stood quietly as the names of the 185 earthquake victims were slowly and solemnly read out, after which Catholic Bishop of Christchurch Barry Jones led two minutes’ silence from 12.51pm, the time the earthquake struck. Near the end of the service, 185 monarch butterflies were released. The anniversary day had started with a service in Latimer Square for the victims’ families. Planning for a commemoration event for the earthquake’s second anniversary is underway by the Christchurch City Council. This year’s memorial service is planned to be held in Latimer Square on Friday, February 22, 2013, also timed to coincide with the time the earthquake struck, 12.51pm. Photo: Chris Tobin

Home at last: Fans cheer on the Canterbury Crusaders, who had their first game back in their new home stadium, the new AMI Stadium in Addington, on March 25, 2012. A massive crowd turned out to watch them in a nail-biting showdown against the Cheetahs. In the end the homeside won 28-21. It was the Crusaders’ first match in Christchurch since May 2010 after the September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes knocked out their home stadium. It was also the first major match at the new $30 million temporary stadium, which had been cobbled together with lights from Dunedin’s old Carisbrook, turf from the old stadium and stands from Auckland’s Mt Smart stadium. Photo: Chris Tobin

Hard training: It had been almost two years since Christchurch hosted the All Blacks when they came back to face Ireland in their second test at Addington’s AMI Stadium on June 9. On the Tuesday prior to the match the boys trained at Linfield Park in very cold and windy conditions. Similar weather conditions were forecast for the Saturday night. The All Blacks won what was a closefought match, 21-19. Photo: Tania Butterfield

Biting the dust: The earthquakedamaged Newstalk ZB building was demolished using implosion on August 5. Despite warnings, the spectacle drew a large crowd of spectators, some of whom had camped out all night. A series of strategically placed charges brought the building down in less than 10 seconds. Fire service commemorates 9-11

‘Rebuild it for us’

Not forgotten: Members of the New Zealand Fire Service and the public gathered at the Firefighters Reserve on September 11 to commemorate the victims of the 2001 World Trade Centre attacks in New York. Also remembered were all firefighters throughout history who had died in the line of duty. Photo: Gilbert Wealleans

Access for all: Accessible Christchurch’s Every Body, Every Where campaign was launched at the Re:Start Mall on Sunday, December 2, at 10.45am with a performance by mixed-ability group Jolt Dance and a flash mob. Accessible Christchurch said the city had a once in a lifetime opportunity to be rebuilt as a city accessible for all, whether they were mothers with prams, small children, the elderly, the injured or those with disabilities. The group had been working behind the scenes with organisations like the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, Christchurch Central Development Unit and Christchurch City Council for many months.

All Artware 25% off

Spokesperson Andrew Olsen said the city could become an example for the rest of the world. “When you have what was a devastating set of circumstances for an entire community the sensible idea is to turn that into an opportunity to improve everybody’s lot going forward and to use international best practice in planning and developing the new communities.”

Big year for Addington Action Animal visitors Watch this space: Addington Action making a difference organiser Mike Peters and builder Philip Nussbaumer discuss plans for the site of the group’s new base on Garlands Road, Opawa. The group has signed an agreement with the Christchurch City Council to lease a 1370-square-metre section at 124 Garlands Road, Opawa, which used to contain a Scout den, for a peppercorn rental of $1 a year. It will serve as its base for the next five years and include a workshop, storage facilities, an office and canteen. Addington Action was formed after the February 2011 earthquake and its activities include co-ordinating the Christchurch South Fruit and Vegetable co-op and offering free basic repairs to earthquake-damaged uninsured homes. Quality time: Chocolate Labrador Coco found a friend in Bishop Selwyn Lifecare Centre resident Win Moorhead. Coco was a regular visitor to the centre in Addington every Tuesday along with her owner, veterinary nurse Carolin Kohle. Ms Kohle, who started volunteering at the centre through the Canine Friends network less than two months after the February 22, 2011 earthquake, said residents’ faces lit up when Coco arrived and the visits seemed to have helped with the social atmosphere at the rest home. Farewell: Flowers were laid outside historic Cracroft House in Cashmere as its demolition began. The 1850s’ mud brick cob cottage is part of Girl Guiding New Zealand’s base and the organisation described its loss as heartbreaking. Cracroft Guiding Centre warden Trevena Wilson said following engineering assessments, the house was judged to be beyond economic repair. The house was used for overnight camps and outdoor adventures by guides, businesses and community organisations. Cracroft House was built between 1854 and 1856 by Sir John Cracroft Wilson. In 1958, John Frederick Cracroft Wilson, Sir John’s great-grandson, gifted 1.4 hectares of grounds to the Girl Guide Association, to which his mother and wife had strong links. A custom-built training and accommodation facility is planned for the site. Photo: Samantha Early

Back again: The Christchurch South Library and Beckenham Service centre was closed suddenly in July after an engineering report showed it to be earthquake-prone. Most of the problems seemed to stem from land damage under the building, which is alongside the Heathcote River. The closure was called a huge blow to the local community, including nearby schools that used it frequently. Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board chairman Phil Clearwater said about 1000 people used the facility every day. Temporary repair and strengthening work was carried out on the building and it reopened to the public on December 19, just in time for the Christmas holidays. The work included installing steel propping and additional beams and plates and will allow the building to operate as it is for three years. Photo: Samantha Early

Farm learning: Oaklands School students Emily Burgess, 6, Siobhan Kenna, 6, Kynan Durie, 6, and Mahad Kahn, 7, were excited to be at the Canterbury A&P Show. The Show, which celebrated 150 years in 2012, attracted an estimated 100,000 people, with about 65,000 attending on Show Day. More than 500 volunteers had worked to bring together New Zealand’s largest agricultural and pastoral show. It featured more than 3000 animals, close to 7000 livestock and feature competition entries and 600 trade exhibitors. Photo: Samantha Early

Need Glasses Now? Buy Now, Pay Later Awards for north-west quake heroes Rewards for good deeds: Residents and organisations in north-west Christchurch were rewarded for their good deeds following the February 22, 2011 earthquake, at a special award ceremony. The Northwest Christchurch Earthquake Awards, an initiative of Earthquake Recovery Minister and Ilam MP Gerry Brownlee, recognised

15 recipients at the ceremony, held at the Elmwood Auditorium in Merivale in March. One of the recipients was the ARISE Church, located at the Aurora Centre of Performing Arts at Burnside High School. Within days of the February quake, the church was distributing bottled water and boxes of food, delivered straight to the doorsteps of people’s homes.

Winning team: Elmwood School, rugby league A team won the Primary Schools Rugby League Tournament last year. The school has held the champion title for five out of the past six years despite not actually having a competitive league team. Elmwood School head of sport Tarquin Smith said the team got together one week before the tournament and had one practice during that time.

Using flair for fair trade Being fair: Heaton Intermediate students utilised their creative talent to celebrate Fair Trade Fortnight in 2012. Inspired by historical British slavery abolitionist and potter Josiah Wedgewood, about 120 year eight students created their own fair trade sugar bowls. Mr Wedgewood produced a series of ceramic pieces to advertise the ‘slave free’ cause. The students made their own bowls out of clay and used fair trade materials such as coffee beans, rice, cloves and Indian rubber stamps to create patterns in the bowls. Photo: Tania Butterfield

Supporting the All Blacks: Cartoon superhero Batman may have had his bat cave, but Paparoa Street School’s Black Cave - created in support of their real-life heroes the All Blacks - was just as impressive. Room 7 at Paparoa Street School won the Paint it Black competition, beating 53 other schools for the title. Teacher Tania Soal and Helen Jolly spent about five hours blacking out the classroom using rubbish bin liners and black balloons. The students all donned All Black caricature masks for their entry into the competition. They held an All Black day where the year five and six students iced biscuits, made All Black jerseys using Vegemite and cheese and their school subjects such as Mathematics was based around the All Blacks. Mairehau Primary welcomes Olympian home Three generations cycle for child cancer

Celebrating Mr Shaw: Mairehau Primary School teacher and Black Sticks team member Brad Shaw soaked up the atmosphere at a surprise “welcome home” party thrown for him by his year three and four pupils on August 17. The party was part of a day of celebrations, which included a haka. Mr Shaw said he was overwhelmed by the support he had received from his class, along with the school and wider community. Pedal power: It was all about family for James Geekie, Kaylene Lucas, George Webb, Phil Ibell (event organiser), Cameron Lucas and Hayden Lucas who took part in the 250-kilometre Coast to NZ Post bike ride from Greymouth to Christchurch. Fifteen years ago when Ms Lucas’ son Hayden was diagnosed with a brain tumour the close-knit family members, whose ages range from 22 to 84, took up the challenge of completing the bike ride to support the Child Cancer Foundation. “They were wonderful to us when we were going through a very difficult time so it was natural to do something to help them.” The annual event, which was in its 25th and final year, after New Zealand Post withdrew its sponsorship, had raised over $222,000 for child cancer. Singing amigos perform for high school students

Operatic power: The members of operatic trio O Sol3 Mio were rewarded with thunderous applause when they performed at Shirley Boys’ High School on September 6. The concert resulted from a request sent by Joseph Houghton, the teacher in charge of the school’s Pasifika group, for the singers to visit when in Christchurch. The two tenors, brothers Amitai and Pene Pati, along with baritone Moses Mackay, presented their act with good-humoured clowning and superb singing. Their finale, which was their theme song O Sole Mio, demonstrated the sheer power of their combined voices and their disciplined approach. Photo: Gilbert Wealleans

New Brighton children enjoy new gumboots Equipped for the wet: Keeping your feet dry can sometimes be a challenge for children walking to school on earthquake damaged footpaths – but thanks to an act of charity, Central New Brighton pupils became well-equipped to handle it. That is because in November last year the school, which is among those marked for merger by the Ministry of Education in its shake-up of Christchurch education, was gifted more than 100 pairs of gumboots by the Kiwanis Club of Waimairi. They were purchased with money donated by other Kiwanis clubs in Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Kiwanis member Rhondda Boxall said they had consulted with the school on what would meet their needs and gumboots were thought to be a practical way of dealing with wet and muddy conditions, especially in winter time. Three items from each of the eight Youthtown branches around New Zealand were selected for the capsule. The Christchurch items were a book on the Christchurch earthquakes, Christchurch Beyond the Cordon (which features an insert written by the Youthtown Christchurch team), a basketball in recognition of the importance of the game to Youthtown kids and a photograph of the Youth Squad, which details on the back who they are, what age they will be in 2032 when Youthtown is 100 years old and what they want to be in 20 years’ time. Hammering for good: Twenty North Americans gave up their summer break to build two Habitat for Humanity homes in Kaiapoi for North Canterbury families displaced by the earthquakes. The volunteer project, which finished on May 31, saw two houses on Fuller Street constructed to lock-up stage with completion scheduled for late July, but not being completed until September.

Relationships between schools: A special planting ceremony for a magnolia tree donated by Hastings Girls’ High School took place at Avonside Girls’ High School in March. The Hastings school donated 50 goodie bags for earthquake-affected students, 60 new library books, NCEA study guides, stationery, morning tea for staff and paid for Mrs Hume to attend a school conference in Hastings. They also held a draw for staff members and students and provided prizes of cellphones and iPods. Photo: Gina McKenzie

Set both short-term and long-term goals, and allow yourself rewards for meeting them. For example, you could set a shortterm goal to exercise three to four times a week for 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise and 30 minutes of strength training. Your long-term goal could be to lose weight or lower your cholesterol level. Reward yourself, say, for every four weeks you meet your goals you could get a massage, a new piece of clothing, a movie, or an evening without the kids.

It is very important to recognize your own barriers to exercise. Do you have trouble getting to the gym if you go home first? Do you always hit the snooze button when you plan to work out in the morning? Do you ever forget your gym clothes? Once you identify your barriers it is imperative that you try to reduce or eliminate them. Pack your gym bag the night before or keep a few extra sets 4. ustomers are the top priority at the Long Island retail and online clothing brand, located in the heart of Sydenham opposite the car park into The Colombo in Stanley Street. Customer feedback from their customer base of 15,000 is even taken into account when Long Island director Phillippa Wilberforce is working with her design team on their new ranges. “We design specifically for our customer base in sizes 10 to 30. Our clothes fit real women with hips and busts, which is critical as our shape may change as we mature. A size 12 can be a lot different if you’ve had children,” says Phillippa. They also make sure that the popular lines are always in stock so you can buy your favourite pair of trousers three years down the track. Most of Long Island’s top quality garments are made in New Zealand which, Phillippa says, gives the company more control over the quality and fit “which is really important to us”.

Long Island started in Christchurch with a retail outlet and now has shops in Auckland and Wellington and an online service making the clothes available to women throughout New Zealand and overseas. “We want you to be admired for what you look like wearing our clothes and we want to be admired for how we work to achieve that,” says Phillippa. From casual to dressy, Long Island is the place to visit, particularly with new stock arriving all the time. “We bring in 10 new styles a month so there is always something new for our regular customers, and stock is arriving all the time.” Phillippa says layering is the way to go to look contemporary and stylish, and for customers with a stretched budget, they can build on their wardrobe by adding an extra piece. In for summer at Long Island are bright colours, asymmetrical hemlines and floating materials. Accessories such as jewellery, scarves and handbags give that finishing touch. New in store is a selection of giftware including retro toys, wallets, luggage and photo frames.

Rachel Vogan explores the charms of coneflowers.

C

oneflower (Echinacea) is a favourite with many as it comes into its own in the flower garden from midsummer until the end of autumn. Over recent years, a plethora of wonderful new varieties have appeared, adding to their appeal. The name comes from the Greek word echinos meaning “hedgehog or sea urchin”, a reference to the flower’s spiny centre cone but there is nothing prickly about these heat-loving perennials, which are perfect for the garden border or in blended plantings with other perennials, such as penstemon, diascia, nemesia, achillea and shasta daisies.

They work fabulously well in the vege patch, too. The dried roots and rhizomes are used as an ingredient in health remedies and medicines, although medical opinion is divided on its efficacy. Echinacea is thought by some to help build the body’s immune system but should not be given to children under the age of 12. Echinacea purpurea (Eastern purple coneflower) is probably the most common of the nine Echinacea species and many hybrids have been developed by growers. One of the tricks with coneflowers is that they prefer a sweeter soil, and will literally

turn up their toes in acidic soils. Prepare soil by blending in sheep pellets or a general blended fertiliser prior to planting. They prefer sun in a well-drained location. Existing clumps are easy to lift and divide after flowering to bulk up plantings and borders. Remove spent flowers to improve general appearance and encourage repeat flowering. The flowers attract butterflies, honeybees and other beneficial insects to the garden but be on the lookout for slugs and snails when the new leaves appear, as these hungry critters will munch through a crown overnight and render the plant useless.

The cycling scene with Paul Odlin

When you hit the wall BONKING - in cycling lingo - refers to hitting the wall or the condition caused by depletion of glycogen stores in the liver and muscles, which manifests itself by sudden fatigue and loss of energy. “Bonking?” or “Have you bonked recently?” are the questions I’ve wanted to ask after a client recently experienced ‘the bonk’, which got me thinking. Further discussion and rumination established that bonking is something that the majority must first experience to subsequently avoid at all costs. I recall my first experience of this sensation as an enthusiastic 16-year-old on an early expedition mountain biking to the far-off Port Hills (everything seemed so much further in those youthful days). Back then the last five kilometres must have seemed too much to ask of my glycogendepleted stores so I bartered my bicycle pump

for a Bumper bar (teenager with hunger but no money) at a Blenheim Road petrol station. I must have appeared fairly depleted to have successfully completed that transaction. After retrieving my pump (and paying for the bar) I put my learning experience into practice - I now travel with a spare nut bar in my saddle bag and extra change in my back pocket lifesavers on many subsequent occasions! I’m often telling clients that these items require very little space and have negligible effect on your gross weight. In addition, before going out for a long ride, consider how many meals or food you would normally eat over that period of time - this is below the minimum amount of food you must consume during your ride. If you heed none of this advice then remember your pump and bartering skills!

Are you confused by all the roof box options? We have the answer – two boxes, either the THULE Pacific 780 or the THULE Motion 800 that will do everything, big or small car, summer or winter.

Cycling’s elite nationals in town Spectacle: Cycling fans will be able to catch some of the sport’s top athletes, such as Julian Dean, right, in action this weekend when the 2013 Elite Road National Championships takes place in Hoon Hay and Cashmere. The ride will start at Centennial Park and include a hill climb up Dyers Pass Road. Christchurch City Council unit manager John Filsell said it was the biggest event on the New Zealand cycling calendar. “This is the perfect chance to get out and see New Zealand’s top road cyclists in action, from Olympic medallists to Tour de France riders.” In a first, all seven of New Zealand’s World Tour professional cyclists will take to the road to compete, including Julian Dean, George Bennett, Jesse Sergent, Sam Bewley, Greg Henderson, Hayden Roulston and Jack

A year in sports

Anton Cooper…

AS far as sporting highlights go, 2011 was going to be a tough act to follow with Richie McCaw having held the Webb Ellis trophy high. However, 2012 certainly did have some memorable moments for Canterbury sports fans, some of which we recall here…

Sophie Pascoe…

Olympics…

Capturing gold: New Zealand athletes did their country proud at the London Olympic Games in August, bringing home 13 medals, including six gold. The first of those gold came when Canterbury rowers Nathan Cohen and Joseph Sullivan won the men’s double scull. Photo: Rowing New Zealand

King of the mountain: Canterbury mountain biking sensation Anton Cooper showed just how good he is in September, winning the under-19 crosscountry title at the UCI Mountain Biking World Championships in Austria, while posting lap times faster than most of those racing in the under-23 section of the event. He also won all three world cup races he entered last year and captured BikeNZ’s People’s Choice and Male Mountain Biker of the Year awards.

Hockey…

Rugby…

Cats with claws: The Canterbury Cats women’s hockey team captured their first national title in a decade with a 3-1 victory over Auckland in September. Provincial success translated into national call-ups with five Cats players making their Black Sticks debuts in a series against India in December. The Black Sticks won the five-match series with four wins and a draw, with several of the debutantes, including Olivia Merry, pictured above, playing important roles in the team’s success.

Four of the best: Not only did the Canterbury provincial rugby side shrug off mixed early-season form to capture a record fifth consecutive national title, they did it by beating Auckland 31-18 in the final in October. Does it get any sweeter? Photo: Photosport

What a star: New Zealanders already knew Sophie Pascoe was a champion but at the London Paralympics in August and September the Halswell teenager proved us right again, capturing six medals – three gold and three silver.

Wizards all but out THE Canterbury Wizards appear unlikely to feature in the semi-finals of the HRV Cup Twenty20, due to be held next week, despite having three games in hand. While it is not impossible for them to qualify, the team, which was soundly beaten by Otago in its last match, would need some extremely favourable results to make the top three. They would need to not

only win all their remaining games but also to substantially improve their net run rate. At the same time they would be hoping for Auckland and the Northern Knights to lose two matches each. The Wizards have notched just two wins in the Twenty20 format this season, both against the Central Stags, the only team placed below them on the table.

From the sideline with Pete Smith

The year in review, 2012

AFTER all the hype surrounding the 2011 Rugby World Cup, the sporting year in 2012 could have been a flat one. However, given the history of success the Kiwis had at past Olympic Games, the London games would be no different when it came to raising the nation’s excitement. Once again sport on the water dominated our medal haul with the rowers just an outstanding group of young men and women. Some of their performances were way above even the expectations of the rowing community. Medals also came from yachting and kayaking, reinforcing the fact that funding must continue as we head towards Rio in 2016. Val Adams almost had games to forget. Firstly she had her entry overlooked by New Zealand officials and then took her place in the circle in the full knowledge that her main opposition was a drugs cheat. To her credit she bit the bullet and waited for an Olympic gold medal ceremony in New Zealand for the very first time. At the Paralympics, Cantabrian Sophie Pascoe proved that she has no equal in the events she took part in and she captured the

hearts of all Kiwi fans. Once again the Super 15 title eluded the Crusaders, much to the disappointment of coach Blackadder, the team and supporters. On the positive side, the Canterbury Rugby Football Union was able to post a profit largely thanks to the building of a fine stadium for the home fans. The Chiefs played great rugby to be named champions. Burnside was the dominant side in club rugby and thoroughly deserved taking out the Hawkins Metro Championship. The Canterbury ITM team had a new coach and Tabai Matson and the team responded by winning the title for a record fifth time in a row, which was a remarkable achievement. Once again harness racing’s super star Dexter Dunn smashed all the records that were in front of him and drove his 1000th winner six years younger than the previous record holder. Our national summer sport, cricket, spent the past 12 months moving from one crisis to another and they are now in danger of not being the dominant sport over the summer. Saying that, softball is having all kinds of issues, as is New Zealand swimming with its entire board being forced to resign.

in New Zealand with more than 5000 full playing members and 6900 casual pay-for-play members. Beckenham, Bowls Papanui, Canterbury, Cashmere, Elmwood, Parklands, Sumner, South Brighton, Spreydon, Tai Tapu, Woolston Park and Woolston WMC Club have all recovered after work to restore their greens. Reynolds said the grant of $145,000 from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust was a blessing. Many of the clubs had already expended their reserves and without the grant, clubs could not afford the remedial works which cost at least $7500. The earthquake had done some good for Canterbury’s 62 remaining clubs. Those that had merged were now larger sustainable clubs, and earthquake-damaged clubs that had taken their insurance payout cash with them to a new club could look forward to several years of progress with the cash injection. Bowls Canterbury was working closely with Christchurch City Council and Sport Canterbury on the recovery project and was looking forward to the future with an international event being scheduled in Christchurch in each of the next four years, Mr Reynolds said.

AFTER two tough years and plenty of voluntary hard labour, Bowls Canterbury chief executive Colin Reynolds says the hard yards are just about over and bowlers are back revelling in their sport. Many of them have a new home. In 2011 Bowls Canterbury lost 776 members (13.3 per cent of total membership) after earthquakes devastated greens and people’s lives. Reynolds said it would be interesting to see how many had returned to the sport when club membership returns were received this month. The signs were good with entries to the interclub and centre events up 12 per cent on last year but not at pre-earthquake levels yet. “We have introduced a number of new formats for interclub competitions and entries to those have been high, confirming that change of format was required. We now have well over 1500 playing in our Saturday interclub competition, which is thriving.” Prior the earthquakes, Bowls Canterbury had 36 clubs in the city and suburbs. Burwood Park, Christchurch-Richmond, Heathcote Valley, Hornby WMC, Kaiapoi Riverside, Mt Pleasant and Shirley have since closed. Overall, Bowls Canterbury has nine fewer greens, but is still one of the largest centres
