Getting tourism back on track Christine de Felice CHRISTCHURCH’S trams could become as iconic as the famous San Francisco cable cars. That’s the view of the Ferrymeadbased Tramway Historical Society, but one it believes is being overlooked by the city’s leaders. The important role the trams play in Christchurch’s tourism industry needs to be recognised, but has been given little emphasis in the draft central city plan, Graeme Belworthy, president of the society said. The society leases the trams to the operator of the service, Christchurch Tramway, through the Christchurch City Council. “We feel if we could get the trams up and running again it will open up the centre of the city.” The trams were a “strong attraction” in the city for tourists, Mr Belworthy said, and as mentioned in the society’s comments to
council on the plan, they could be a unique tourist attraction, just like the San Francisco cable cars. “The trams are probably the most photographed attraction in Christchurch – any photos you see of Christchurch have the tram in them,” Mr Belworthy said. Society members supported the plan’s proposed light rail network and believed if it went ahead, the heritage trams could be integrated into the network, Mr Belworthy said. “In Melbourne the heritage trams share the same tracks as the trams used for public transport, so that could be done here with our trams sharing the light rail track,” he said. However, the society was surprised at the costs quoted for the construction of the line ($410 million). Public support for the initiative was in danger of being lost
because of the perceived high costs, and the figures urgently needed to be rechecked and corrected, the society said in its comments to council.

SMALL-scale earthquake-recovery projects are being given a leg up in Lyttelton with the help of a locally focused earthquake fund. Local community group Project Lyttelton set the fund up as a way to distribute money that was donated through its website following the February 22 earthquake. Project Lyttelton office manager, Lottie Harris, said that after the earthquake people had wanted a way to donate to Lyttelton directly, rather than through one of the citywide funds. “We specifically didn’t want to put too much direction into what people could apply for money for. The concept is that it does something good for the community and that is sort of the only boundary for the project. A panel of seven local community members had been set up to consider funding applications and five
applications were currently on the table. The first two grants were approved a month ago. One was for an earthquake art-therapy initiative, while the other went to local resident Trent Hiles to be used for various arts projects through groups such as the Harbour Arts Collective and Lyttel Gap Filler. Mr Hiles said the grant had been “really useful and the fund was “fantastic for the community. “It’s great to have that money that has been gifted to the community being used for Lyttelton initiatives. Ms Harris said donations had largely stopped but there was still “a few little bits coming in. “It’s not a large pot so we are encouraging people to try other places either as well, or first, so we can use this money for things that would fall outside of the big fund – more creative ideas that might not fit in the big contenders’ criteria.
A close shave for a good cause THE prospect of having her hair shaved off was a “little bit scary for Sumner School student Mattie Rowlands. But it was all for a good cause – raising money for women with breast cancer. “I’ve heard of a few people who have had breast cancer and have lost their hair, and that’s a big issue for them so I wanted to show my support, Mattie said. So last Friday at lunchtime the year 8 student had her head shaved by local hairdresser Victoria Gibson, and raised more than $1013 for the cause. This came from pledges and donations dropped into a bucket during the shaving process. Mattie said it wouldn’t take long to grow back, and she might decide to keep it short, if she likes it that way.

Hard at work: Volunteer planters at Charlesworth Reserve.
MORE than 80 people turned up to help plant over 2000 natives at Charlesworth Reserve in Charlesworth Street, Ferrymead on Sunday, October 2. The plants were supplied by community nursery Trees For Canterbury, with Coca-Cola Amatil New Zealand sponsoring the initiative. Coca-Cola Amatil’s Woolston site suffered significant structural damage in the February earthquake. After rebuilding and upgrading its facilities, the company contributed to the beautification of the local environment by sponsoring the 2000 plants. Another 300 plants were sponsored by Office Max on behalf of the Christchurch Women’s Refuge. These 300 plants represented the number of deaths over the last 10 years through domestic violence. Park ranger Andrew Crossland and his team laid out the plants and staff from Coca-Cola Amatil supplied the refreshments and barbecue for the hungry volunteers after the event. The few plants that didn’t make it into the ground on Enthusiastic volunteers: Christchurch Women’s the day were to be planted by reserve volunteers over the Refuge staff taking part in the planting. Fun day at Ferrymead attracts the crowds THOUSANDS of people flocked to the Christchurch City Council’s Community Fanzone at Ferrymead Sports Park on Sunday October 2 to enjoy the family atmosphere of the Redcliffs School carnival and watch World Cup rugby on the big screen. The school’s usual fundraiser, the annual school fair, was cancelled this year due to the school being temporarily relocated after the February earthquake. “Fundraising wasn’t the main point of the carnival, though, organiser Nicoli Fox-Waite said. “We didn’t want the kids to miss out on their fun day. “There was lots of screaming from the rides and we sold out of candy floss, cakes and sweets. It was a positive day. Redcliffs School principal Kim Alexander said the event went very well and was “a great opportunity for the community to get together, particularly the families that had to relocate after the earthquakes.
“It was a chance for parents and children to catch up with each other. There were people not just from Redcliffs but from Mt Pleasant and Sumner as well, she said. Mrs Fox-Waite said it also gave displaced businesses from the Arts Centre somewhere to operate from for the day. The school raised about $8000 at the carnival and with the proceeds from the online auction that ran in September, the total sum raised was about $30,000, Mrs Alexander said. “We were very happy with that. It’s not as much as we would normally raise from the fair, but it was a good portion of it. It exceeded our expectations, she said. Richard Stokes, the city council’s marketing manager, estimated the crowd numbers to be about 6000 to 7000 throughout the day, with about 1000 watching the rugby.

SUMNER businesses have been invited to take advantage of a generous gift from a group of Ashburton residents, aimed at bringing colour to Christchurch communities. Organiser Walter van der Kley heads a group of residents from the mid-Canterbury town who have pooled money to fund 2000 flower baskets to be hung in local communities, as well as wild flower seeds to be scattered over empty shop sites. Marnie Kent, from the Sumner Residents Group, has ordered 200 baskets for the local business area and so far the response from businesses has been very positive and enthusiastic, she said. “The concept behind the baskets and seeds was to pick up the spirits of Christchurch people and add some colour to our communities, Ms Kent said. The baskets are due to arrive at about Labour

THE Mt Pleasant/Redcliffs toy library has a new temporary home. Prior to the February earthquake the library was operating from premises on Bridle Path Road, opposite Heathcote Valley School, but as a result of damage caused to the building during the earthquake, it is now based at the Redcliffs Tennis Club, 75 Main Road. Vanessa Rose, who is helping to get the library back up and running, said space constraints at the tennis club for storing the larger toys prompted Mitre 10 Mega Ferrymead to donate a shed to the library. “We are really grateful for this, she said. There are several advantages of belonging to the toy library, Mrs Rose said. “Children can play with toys their parents may not be able to afford to buy, they can pick games suited to their age and stage of development, and they can try before they buy. The library caters for children from newborn up to six years of age, with the selection available including noisy toys, large toys, and a wide variety of toys, so children don’t get bored with them, she said. The toy library operates fortnightly from 9am10.30am. The next session is October 15, the following one is three weeks later on November 5 and it will be

weekend and businesses that have ordered baskets are asked to have hooks in place before then. “Walter’s team of volunteers will be arriving with a truck and will hang the baskets as they unpack the truck,â€? she said. “Once the baskets are hung you will need to water them every day because baskets don’t hold moisture. With the water restrictions being talked about, now is the time to think of ways to conserve water from the workplace and reuse it on the baskets. “You could bring bath water from home or perhaps set up a downpipe off a shop’s guttering system leading into a drum, then all shops could access this water.â€? Community groups / residents’ groups
Working together for Lyttelton’s recovery Wendy Everingham A ‘NEWISH’ funding initiative between The Tindall Foundation, Todd foundation, J R McKenzie Trust and the Wayne Frances Charitable Trust is named Working Together More. The aim of the fund is to encourage community organisations to work more closely together by sharing resources or collaborating.
The fund made me think of Lyttelton and how the philosophy of this joint-funding initiative is being applied actively in Lyttelton and the Harbour Basin right now. This is just one of the keys to our tightknit community and it’s helping us all move forward positively at the moment. For the first time that I can remember we had a community board delegation last week, where the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre, Project Lyttelton, Lyttelton Community Association and Lyttelton Harbour Business Association all went along together and presented a joint submission on the recovery for Lyttelton. It certainly made the argument

clearer, and with a team around, everyone felt quite supported. We were trying to mirror to the community board/council how we want to work with them. We want them to be an active partner of a community partnership and not just the organisation that does things for us. Other examples of positive partnerships in the township include the Lyttelton Timebank and the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre sharing office space and a joint community funding committee distributing localised earthquake donation funding. There are others supporting the Harbour Arts Collective, the elderly, Youth Centre, Community House, Fire Brigade and St John
and many trying to help local businesses move forward and prosper again. Our main role is as the facilitator of information. So, whatever the group is we are sharing their news around our networks and keeping everyone more informed on what is happening around the harbour. We produce The Lyttelton Review weekly and our Earthquake Update every two weeks. They can be located on our website www. lytteltonharbour.info All contributions are welcome. AS I write this it is raining heavily and our wheelie bins are filling up quickly with water. I shall use that saved water on our garden when it is dry again. Today reminds me just how precious water is and how often we waste what we have. The city council recently notified us that level-three water restrictions would be in effect from October 8 and that we needed to save water, particularly since the quakes made our supply system fragile. The February quake, coming at the end of a dry summer, meant our water tank was low so we were thankful for a neighbour’s swimming pool from where we could collect buckets of water to clean up the mess. In short, perhaps it is time for all of us, as we repair, rebuild or redesign our homes postquakes, to look at how we may capture rain water within our own properties so we have
plenty the next time a disaster or dry spell befalls us. Being locally resilient has become the focus of attention in our community. As Melanda reported in A new vision for Mt Pleasant (Bay Harbour News, September 28), we have been looking at how we may improve our built environment. Part of that is ensuring we can survive independent of council services for some time and that means having plenty of stored water, growing food in our backyards, capturing the sun’s energy, and knowing our neighbours. Since February our association has been collaborating with neighbouring community groups and residents’ associations, understanding that together we can provide stronger support for our residents. Despite the devastation that these seismic events have
caused, the rise in community participation and engagement has been a huge positive for us all. Back in July I reported that our association had purchased a relocatable building as a temporary home until a new community centre is built. We applied to the Christchurch Earthquake Mayoral Relief Fund for support and to council for permission to locate on reserve land neighbouring our broken centre. To date we have had no decision on either and our building languishes in storage. As soon as we hear we will inform residents and organise some dates for a working bee and welcome celebration. The porcelain crab differs from these four. The difference here is that the two major factors of salinity and substrate together restrict distribution. This crab is stenohaline and is highly specific in its choice of substrate. It inhabits only stony, rocky sites and may be observed in Monks Bay, McCormack’s Bay and the Causeway. Another restriction on distribution may
be behavioural. The tunnelling mud crab exposed to air and inhabits mid-tide line. The stalk-eyed mud crab covered with water and is below the mid-tide line.

Sharing ideas for growth and networking Bailey Peryman WE are starting to feel spring warmth in the air and plants are growing faster. I hope your back gardens are doing well, and you have some early spring produce to enjoy. A meeting to discuss events for the coming months will be held either this Saturday 10am - 11.30am at old Sumner School Hall (30 Wiggins Street). Brownlee Reserve community orchard There have been several fruit trees planted in the park and these are being cared for by a group of local residents on Clifton Hill. Anyone who is keen to support them in maintaining, watering and hopefully planting more fruit trees, can contact either Jenny (326 6408) or Sandi and Scott (326 4982). A small amount of funding has been set aside for purchasing more fruit trees at
wholesale prices with the support of Erik Ellis. Local produce market + network Bailey and Jess Mackenzie have been bouncing a few ideas around for developing a strong community-supported agriculture network. We are about to share this with groups from Redcliffs, Mt Pleasant and possibly Heathcote Valley. We will begin by hosting an information session and workshop for a vibrant local produce market and network, with people ranging from backyard growers to small farm operators being involved. There is a very small amount of funding to support this, but it could easily grow to be a small co-operative enterprise.
Van Asch There is a garden area all ready for planting at Van Asch, but it is on hold until Redcliffs School is more settled into its temporary accommodation. The area has the potential to be a communal gardening space for the public, and it could also double as an educational resource for local schools. Donations We have received two donations recently, from Waikanae Beach Garden Group (Kapiti Coast) and from Chris and Eric in the UK, totalling $150. It’s quite touching to know that people from elsewhere are interested in our efforts. We will discuss how these funds will be used at this weekend’s meeting. For information about the meeting or about joining the Sumner Local Food Group, contact Bailey Peryman, phone 326 6927, mobile 021 122 7638. Negotiation Knowhow Vendors and purchasers frequently ask for advice when negotiating on property. “Vendors want to know how to respond to a purchaser’s first offer,” Greg Powell, Licensed Manager of Harcourts Ferrymead said. “Purchasers want to know what sort of offer to make - interestingly enough not because they are looking for a bargain (although some people are!) but because they like the property so much they are afraid their offer will offend.” Greg said that purchasers who have done their homework are their own best advisers, especially since a more professional agent will always be acting for the vendor. “By the time purchasers are ready to make an offer they know what is selling for what price,” Greg said. “But they need to be realistic - a ridiculous initial offer on a competitively priced property rarely ends up in the bargain the purchaser was hoping for. Vendors who are offended often refuse to come back with a counter offer and the purchaser misses out on the opportunity to buy.” According to Greg many people forget that negotiation is a two-way process - a kind of adjustment where two parties evolve slowly to a position they find mutually satisfactory. “Vendors who won’t negotiate miss out on genuine purchasers and end up selling for less in the long run when the property becomes stale,” Greg said. “Only very skilled negotiators know when refusing to negotiate is the best strategy. Whether you’re a purchaser or a vendor, leaving a window open for negotiation usually means you won’t get the door closed on the sale. A non-negotiation stance is confrontationist and leads to a breakdown in communication and a no-sale. Greg said that vendors who don’t negotiate never find out the highest price their would-be purchaser is prepared to pay. Even if they don’t like the highest offer the information is useful for future comparison with other offers. “One of the biggest mistakes purchasers make is walking away from a property just because their research tells them it is really over priced,” Greg said. “They think vendors won’t come down to what they are prepared to pay. However not making an offer on a property you like is the ultimate non-negotiation stance. Paradoxically this can be the time when purchasers get their best buys because other people are equally offer shy and there is no competition. Such properties often end up selling for less, particularly if they stay on the market at an inflated price Once the property has been on the market long enough to reduce close to market value, competition increases and the price frequently negotiates up to the asking price or more and someone misses out.”

New school hall shows its flexibility AFTER many years of planning and consideration, the Sumner School community was excited to finally open its new school hall in term two with a fantastic ceremony and guests including the Prime Minister and Commonwealth Games swimmer Anna Forrest. In the brief time since then, the hall has been used in many unexpected ways: community meetings with Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, four classrooms for Redcliffs School, and a training facility for Neighborhood Emergency Response Training. With the closure of many community centres and public buildings, the timeliness of having this flexible building
available was significant and fortunate. During term three, the hall was reopened with a full school assembly featuring Student Volunteer Army leader Sam Johnson speaking to the students and parents about his volunteer Sumner experiences after the Canterbury earthquakes. Sam emphasised the positives that have come out of the earthquakes and encouraged our students to look for opportunities to engage within the community. To utilise the hall and its performance capabilities, the Sumner staff took on the massive effort of staging a full school musical production, The Button Box, which
is a song-and-dance-filled journey around the world. Under the leadership of music director Robyn Lean and assisted by Bridget Scoular, the teachers choreographed dances and songs for pairings of junior School and senior classrooms with elaborate costumes created by a dedicated team of talented parents. Everyone’s diligent efforts and rehearsals resulted in a spectacular show. It was great to see each student have time on the stage and receive the support of the large crowds that attended the three shows. Term four will be full of more exciting opportunities to utilise this wonderful new space.

Coppers’ Corner AS I sit in our temporary accommodation at the rear of our police station, I have been watching all the beautiful historic buildings being demolished in Lyttelton. It is not pleasant seeing our heritage disappear, and unfortunately it’s not only Lyttelton, but many other areas in the bays are affected as well. However, at the end of the day I have been amazed at the resilience of our local residents, and this in turn shows what a close community we have. We need to continue to work towards our community becoming stronger through the adversity we have faced. As a community we have a responsibility to work with each other to make sure our area is safe. This means ringing the police when we see suspicious persons, or crimes happening; it also means standing up and being counted when we know that a local resident is committing crime. I feel we need to ensure that the criminal lowlifes are aware that the residents own
the town, not the criminals – it takes courage to stand up and be counted. My staff are more than happy to take complaints of any crime or bad driving behaviour and follow up on these, but we need evidence to convict, and generally this involves the person observing the crime being prepared to go to court as a witness. Lastly, we are getting more and more complaints about speed in the Tunnel Road, Port Hills Road and Norwich Quay areas, and also parts of Sumner with speed limits. Unfortunately a lot of the offenders are local, so all I can say is that if you get stopped for speeding, remember it’s not to collect revenue, but to make our roads safer for all, so please take note and observe the speed limits. It’s great to see more and more businesses re-opening in Sumner and Lyttelton. Let’s support them, as they need to be able to grow. Gary Manch Sergeant
St John volunteers needed in Lyttelton THE St John team in Lyttelton is calling for more volunteers to support the ambulance service in the busy town. Lyttelton plays a key part in ambulance services on Banks Peninsula. While there is a first- response unit in Akaroa, which does sterling work in that rural part of the Peninsula, Lyttelton remains an important ambulance station. Peter Dawson, chair of St John Banks Peninsula, says being part of an ambulance service is exciting, rewarding and a great way to “give back” by contributing to the welfare of your local community. This is especially true in tight-knit communities like Lyttelton, he says. “We need the people of Lyttelton to support us. We’re hoping that lots of
people will join us. St John Ambulance in Lyttelton played a really key role after the February 22 earthquake, as the town was essentially cut off and we had to rely on our own resources and people for our own welfare.” He says a recent donation by Evans Shipping Ltd helped the station to buy important equipment for its emergency cache. “We are as best prepared for an emergency or a mass casualty incident as we can be as far as equipment goes, however we do need more volunteers.” Anyone interested in joining St John can contact mike.capon@stjohn.org.nz or pete@fishcon.net. Or visit our website www.stjohn.org. nz/volunteer/ for more information on volunteering with St John.
