News in brief POLICE will be keeping a close eye out for alcohol abuse and drunk driving over Cup and Show Week. Canterbury road policing senior sergeant Scott Richardson said police would have a large number of checkpoints and strict enforcement of liquor bans to make sure things didn’t get out of hand over Cup and Show Week. “The council are this week launching ‘plot your evening’. It’s a good idea for people to have plans in place of how they’re going to get home – are they going to have a sober driver,
put money aside for a taxi, have parents as a back-up or whatever? Have those systems in place so you have a fun weekend not a bad weekend.” He said extra traffic on the road over the long weekend brought increased risks and warned of the importance of wearing a seatbelt while driving. “We have had 29 [road] deaths in Canterbury this year and some of those people may have survived had they been wearing their seatbelts.”

Mr Lynch thanked Bruce Coleman and Richard Tankersley, Human Rights Commissioners in Christchurch, for their assistance. “The trespass notice has been revealed for what it really was ... a load of old cobblers!” he said.

Bob Parker launches book Spinal Trust support: Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker, right, launched his book Ripped Apart – a city in chaos last Saturday at the head office of the New Zealand Spinal Trust. Written in the aftermath of the February 22 earthquake, the book provides an insight into the arguments, power struggles and policies that followed the tragic event, balanced with glimpses of courage, compassion and a unique vision. Speaking at the launch, Mayor Parker said writing the book had been a “cathartic journey for him” and also enabled him to raise awareness about people with disabilities. All royalties from the book will be donated to the New Zealand Spinal Trust’s programme, Connecting People. Mayor Parker was joined at the launch by New Zealand Spinal Trust chief executive Ben Lucas, on his left.

BODY artist and face painter Carmel McCormick understands the time, effort and planning that goes in to creating the spectacular works of art seen at Addington Raceway on Cup Day. So, as a judge in the body art and fashion competitions, picking a winner was never going to be easy. Auckland-based Mrs McCormick stumbled across body art 15 years ago, when she received requests after doing face-painting at her son’s birthday party and hasn’t looked back since. She is self-taught and after many years of practice a detailed piece takes her about four hours to paint. “If you have got a drive and passion and believe in what you are doing it just grows.” She enjoys the freedom of expression and creativity that comes with body art, as well as meeting different models and attending events. “And the illusion of the art, it’s a canvas that breathes and moves.”

She said she got a buzz from seeing others’ work. One of her most high-profile projects was doing the body painting for Air New Zealand’s ‘Nothing to Hide’ advertising campaign and inflight video. She and her son Alex, who is also a talented artist, painted nine people, working flat out for 24 hours. With her sons, now in their 20s, helping out with some of the painting and her husband Wayne doing the bookwork, body painting has become a family passion. Her job has taken her all over the country, even to Fiji, painting people of all shapes and sizes, even two elephants at Auckland zoo. “There’s paint on every single bit of our house. Wall, chair or door, there’s a splash of paint everywhere, all the colours of the rainbow.” More information about Carmel McCormick’s work can be found online at www. carmelsbodyart.co.nz
DISCUSSIONS on the future of the Catholic Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Barbadoes Street are continuing while the Cathedral Management Board waits for further engineering reports. The board has discussed the place of the cathedral (basilica) in the new central city plan with Boffa Miskell principal Don Miskell in terms of its strong links with the city and the future of the land surrounding the building. Mr Miskell will discuss his ideas at the next board meeting. Once a further geotech report on the site has been received, the board will be in a better position to make a recommendation to Bishop Barry Jones, it was stated in a recent cathedral update. The report is expected early in the New Year. The board is continuing to look at all options, with one that is gaining traction being to retain the northern and western walls as a memorial. There was the potential for building a new cathedral on the adjacent former convent site if the ground was suitable, and if the present site was not suitable for rebuilding.

It’s our week EXCITEMENT, fashion, entertainment, glamour, partying, picnics and hopefully warm balmy days, gosh we deserve this Anniversary week in so many ways. It’s our week, one in which we can reflect on what happened in the past and where we are going. With so much that has happened to Canterbury over the last two years, perhaps this spring festival week culminating in people’s day tomorrow will stand us in good stead with a big dose of feelgood and positivity. The Agricultural and Pastoral Association (A&P Show) is celebrating a significant milestone: 150 years of the country coming to town. It’s easy to dismiss the huge influence the farming sector has on Canterbury and New Zealand’s economy but with it increasing prevalence and importance in balancing the books it’s critical we understand and work together with our farming neighbours. The A&P show affords the opportunity to educate, feel, touch and smell a small piece of rural life. For many of our children it is the first opportunity they will get to touch a lamb, see horses and get up close and personal with an Angus bull. Cup and Show Week throws together the potpourri that is Canterbury life. An added bonus of the royal couple will show who and what we
are. We should use this week to rejuvenate our spirits, put aside all the earthquake related angst for just a few days and truly party. Running parallel with the show are the racing calendar’s big events. Whilst it’s wonderful to see both sexes dress so glamorously and the crowds enjoying themselves, it’s the overindulgence with alcohol that totally ruins any beauty as the days wear on. Champagne breakfasts, the Lindauer lawn sold out, we are surrounded by a sea of alcohol related pointers. It’s this excessive and addictive culture that our politicians continue to turn a blind eye to. Alcohol abuse overwhelmingly ruins and distorts everything good and positive about our young people and events. This week should be about families, our neighbours and our rural and urban communities. We should be able to congratulate ourselves as we celebrate our anniversary amongst so much adversity. Let the weather play its part, dress up, play fair, everything in moderation. It’s time for Canterbury to shine and show the rest of the country how grown up we are and how far we have come. Enjoy this special week but keep safe and take responsibility for your actions. Congratulations to the A&P Society, 150 years and still very much Canterbury.

Broken homes, broken promises, broken hearts SOUNDS like the Treaty of Waitangi doesn’t it? My wife and I had been looking for a property to buy for over five years and then we discovered Brooklands. That was over twelve years ago. We’ve grown to love the people and the area, especially during the past two tumultuous years. The lagoon, Waimakariri and Lower Styx rivers are great to swim in and there are plenty of picnic spots for the family to enjoy. Fishing, duck shooting, boating, kayaking, whitebaiting, skiing, riding and mountainbiking are right at your front door. And there are great tracks to tramp, ride and run on. But we’ve all got to move out now. Brooklands is a red zone. Yet according to Tonkin and Taylor’s Geotech report, Brooklands is TC2 which means we’ve suffered minor damage. Still the government insists that we leave by April next year but there are some locals who simply can’t move and others who refuse to do so – besides, the government’s buy out schemes are only ‘offers.’ Will they be evicted? Elderly people who were born here and raised their children here aren’t leaving – why should they? Why should they go somewhere else to live out their last days when they can do it right here where there are so many great memories. And why can’t they, themselves, be responsible for the perceived danger of flooding - after all, the council approved all

of the required permits right up to the time of the first quake. The mayor Bob Parker has never spoken up for us like he did for his friend Tony Marryatt. The councillors electioneered in Brooklands promising to serve us well if we voted for them but where are they now? And why isn’t CERA facilitating equitable discussions between the people and their insurers? We’ve dutifully paid our taxes yet the government tells us we have to get off our land. We’ve paid our rates yet neither the mayor nor any member of his council ever offered to help us. Instead, we’re threatened with the possibility of having our services cut if we stay. We’ve faithfully paid our annual premiums toward a replacement/rebuild policy but insurers offer us repair money knowing full well that we cannot carry out repairs in a red zone. I can fully understand why Brooklanders are very disappointed. I certainly am.

NESTLED in an industrial area and surrounded by the vacant sites of demolished buildings, one of Christchurch’s best-kept heritage secrets has survived the earthquakes relatively intact. The Community of the Sacred Name site on St Asaph St includes three heritage-listed buildings and is being considered as a possible new headquarters for the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. The Community of the Sacred Name, an Anglican convent that was briefly known as the Sisters of Bethany, was founded by Sister Edith Mary Mellish when she arrived in Christchurch from Britain in 1893. The buildings, built between 1895 and 1912, were designed by prominent 19th-century architect Benjamin Mountfort, his son C.J. Mountfort and J.G. Collins. The C.J. Mountfort-designed building features a chapel with stained glass windows, three of which were the work of Victoria Whall, a leading British artist and craftsperson of the time.
Her work can also be seen in the Nurses’ Memorial Chapel at Christchurch Public Hospital. The buildings were damaged in the earthquakes but were insured and are repairable. Although seven sisters lived at the site before the earthquakes, three have since moved to Ashburton while the others have plans to join them in the near future once one of them is released from Christchurch Hospital. Sister Annette said she had joined the Community of the Sacred Name in 1956 at the age of 23, so she would have some sadness about leaving the site. However the building was ageing and there would be advantages to moving to somewhere more modern. “As soon as this treatment is finished we will go back and complete the seven sisters in Ashburton,” she said. “We decided we rather liked it there and we didn’t see much future in coming back here without a building and so we bought a small property there

in a rural part of Ashburton.” Historic Places Trust Canterbury branch general manager Rob Hall said the trust was talking with the sisters about the possibility of acquiring the building and restoring it to use as an office. “Long term we need accommodation because we’ve lost our office as a result of the earthquakes. The difficulty we’ve got is the amount of money to get part of it up to any sort of reasonable code for a modern sort of office and to try to retain some of the heritage value of it could be quite a challenge and very expensive, and it’s if we’ve got the money to do it.” It would take several months to evaluate whether that was a viable option but if it was not, the trust would still work with the sisters on saving the building. The building was a treasure and it would be a shame to lose it, he said. “It’s incredible, you speak to people and they don’t even know it’s here.”

Coldicotts return from journey of a lifetime
What a view: Stunning vistas were in abundance during the 4300 kilometre walk.
Coldicotts: Peter and Hamish take a break against a recently felled tree.
Heavy traffic: Hamish Coldicott crossing a road bridge.
Fast flowing: A mountain stream along the trail.
Tom Doudney tom@mainlandpress.co.nz
AFTER travelling 4300 kilometres over five and half months on North America’s beautiful but rugged Pacific Crest Trail, the final leg of Peter and Hamish Coldicott’s journey probably deserved to end in a more triumphant manner. Making the symbolic crossing from the United States to Canada, Peter tripped over a rock and fell from one country into another. The minor indignity is one of the more light hearted stories the Governors Bay father and son have taken home from a trip full of
memorable moments. The pair met their share of potentially dangerous animals along the way - black bears, rattlesnakes and a prowling cougar - but perhaps the most inconvenient encounter was with a deer which stole their clothes while they slept, scattering them in and around a nearby creek and leaving tooth marks in Hamish’s tee-shirt. Peter said he was enjoying having some of the comforts of civilization back but he would miss the simplicity of the wilderness.
On the trail: Hamish Coldicott admiring the scenery.
from various people they had met. The walk doubled as a fundraiser for the Cholmondeley children’s charity for which the pair had so far managed to raise more than $7000. Although the walk is now finished, Peter said the fundraising effort would continue with events including talks and school mufti days. To help Peter and Hamish raise money for Cholmondeley, visit www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/ cholmondeleywalk4kids/ to donate or visit www.walk4kids.org to read their blog, written during the walk.
“That kind of solitude, not looking out for time, just wandering through the wilderness with my thoughts is pretty cool – you don’t often get that sort of experience in your life, not for that long.” The pair each went through two pairs of good shoes during the hike and Peter lost 12 kilograms – of which he has since regained three. They were lucky to benefit from the kindness of strangers along the way – both the ‘trail angels’ who left supplies along their route and other more unexpected acts of generosity
Lucky number three for Pascoe Stoked: Swimmer Sophie Pascoe says being named Canterbury sportsperson of the year at the recent Canterbury Sports Awards ahead of All Black Richie McCaw topped off a great 2012 for her. Pascoe, who won three gold and three silver medals at the London Paralympics in August and September, also took home three Canterbury Sports Awards. In addition to the overall sports person of the year award she also captured sportswoman of the year and sportsperson or team with a disability of the year. “It tops off what has been a great campaign and obviously to win overall over Richie is pretty crazy,” she said. “Richie is someone who I’ve always looked up to and it was a very nice moment.” Pascoe said she had a “pretty full-on year” ahead with the Canterbury Swimming Championship in January, the New Zealand Open in March and World Swimming Championship in August. Sketching Christchurch’s pre-earthquake history
Need your house demo’d
Jessica Schaap jessica.s@mainlandpress.co.nz
IT was the February, 2011 earthquake that inspired 92-year-old Joyce Newton to put her sketches of Christchurch historical buildings into a book. Some of these buildings are now gone and Mrs Newton is pleased she recorded them over the decades. “Christchurch history after the earthquake is going to be quite difficult,” Mrs Newton’s daughter Judy Meikle said. Following the earthquake there was a lot of looting going on and Mrs Meikle was worried her mother’s sketches would be stolen. “Anyone can have what they like in this house but not these sketches,” Mrs Meikle said. The sketches of buildings like the Christ Church Cathedral, the Arts Centre, the former Christchurch Girls High School and Municipal Chambers, had been sitting in Mrs Newton’s bottom drawer until the earthquakes, which inspired her to put them into a book. Originally the book was going to be just for the family but the idea for fundraising for the Christ Church Cathedral inspired them to
print more. The money was going to go to the Cathedral as a whole but people were worried it would go to the temporary ‘cardboard cathedral’ so the money will be going towards the restoration of the cathedral bells instead. Mrs Meikle said the bells were a better choice as the money would be more of a help. “Put it in something that is not going to change,” she said. Mrs Newton studied at art school during the 1930s for two years and discontinued studying as during the depression she had to find a job, so took work as a commercial artist. She was employed at the first supermarket in Christchurch as a product sign writer before computers were used to do it and she also had her own business creating cards, back in the days when it was not usual for women to work. Only 1000 copies of the sketch book have been made but there may be a slightly different second edition if there is enough of a demand.

IT promises to be the opportunity of a lifetime. University of Canterbury law students Rachael Harris, 23, and Seamus Woods, 22, are jetting off this Saturday to spend 10 weeks as interns at Capitol Hill in Washington DC. They will join two political science students from Wellington’s Victoria University on the internship programme and be there for the inauguration of newly re-elected United States president Barack Obama. Each of the interns has been matched with a senator working in their area of interest. Ms Harris will be working with Senator Max Baucus, a Democrat from Montana. She said it was the best summer job and she was looking forward to furthering her knowledge of United States diplomatic relations. Mr Woods was matched with a Republican from Texas, Kevin Brady. Both expected their duties to involve things like cutting out press clippings and writing legal analyses for up-and-coming laws. “You are more there to experience the culture of the office and learn from others,” they said. They were looking forward to making contacts and gaining inside knowledge of the American legislative system to further their future careers. Ms Harris, who is one-eighth Maori of Ngati Tama descent, said she would like to work for some of America’s indigenous groups, particularly on environmental management. She has also recently completed a fellowship through Stanford University working with native Hawaiians and native Alaskans.

Mr Woods is due to start work at the Court of Appeal in Wellington within a week of finishing his Washington internship. Both were excited about being the first New Zealanders to have such a high level of access at the Washington Centre Inauguration Conference. They praised the University of Canterbury’s law school and its head Dr Chris Gallavin for the opportunities they had access to. This is the first year of the internship programme and the interns said it was set to continue to be offered to Canterbury students in their second year of Law study or above.
Diabetes a hidden killer Samantha Early samantha@mainlandpress.co.nz
DIABETES may not show up on death certificates but it’s the cause of many serious ailments, according to Diabetes Christchurch Incorporated manager Lynne Taylor. “You do not die of diabetes, you die of the complications, heart attacks, stroke, kidney disease, amputations, so it’s not put on the death certificate,” Ms Taylor said. This week is Diabetes Awareness Week and along with mascot Barnaby Bee, she’s spreading the word that diabetes sufferers should be aware of their symptoms so they could manage and control their diabetes to have a better quality of life. Ms Taylor said more than 19,800 people in Christchurch had diabetes and another 19,800 had pre-diabetes. “So that means they are starting to have

The theme for this year’s awareness week is diabetes in pregnancy because one in 20 women having a baby also got gestational diabetes. The match caters for everyone, whether you buy a ticket to the ASB VIP marquee to have a fully catered day or Christmas party or pack a picnic and grab a spot on the field with family and friends. The food vendors all donate their site holder fees to be there; North Western Kiwanis are on the barbecue and chocolate wheel; all-in-all there’s plenty of food, fun and entertainment, it’s a fabulous way to spend a Sunday. Always trying to add a new element of excitement, this year the event is harnessing the power of the universe with the addition of the crew from Star Wars enthusiasts, Outpost 42. “Their costumes are works of art” the event manager said; they’ll be out wowing the crowds out alongside Todd Blackadder during the bucket collection. The match starts at 10.30am Sunday, December 9, CBHS, Straven Road; and it would be great to see lots of Cantabrians there supporting this free community event, now in its 30th year. ALTHOUGH there’s a change of date and venue, the 30th annual Crusaders Charity Cricket Match is still the same great, free community event. As a charity, Cystic Fibrosis NZ has certainly felt the impact of the region’s earthquakes, particularly financially, and with families and staff being re-housed because of repairs, rebuilds and being red-zoned. As a flow on effect, the CF Association found its annual charity cricket match displaced because of the redevelopment of Hagley Oval. It meant that CFANZ was in desperate need of a hero; and that hero came in the form of Christchurch Boys High School, who kindly donated their grounds and facilities so that ‘the show can go on’. “We’re so grateful that this iconic community event will still go ahead because of the generosity of Christchurch Boys High,” event manager Caroline Wagteveld McKenzie said. “That’s the Cantab way; see a problem and all pitch in to find a solution.” Other major sponsors such as the Christchurch Casino and More FM were quick to continue their tradition of supporting this winning event. It’s a fabulous opportunity for people to meet the Crusaders, along with well-known sporting, radio and TV personalities, all who give their

“The trip came together rather last minute and for that reason we have not had quite the time we would have liked to invest in raising awareness of the trip and also funds for St John,” Mr Bowie said. However, they did manage to get some support from businesses in Queenstown where they currently work. Despite the lack of preparation they have managed to cope. “So far the whole thing has gone really well; we’ve progressed far further down the journey than we expected to be at this point and we are slowly becoming more used to sitting on the seats all day,” he said. Mr Bowie said they decided to take the trip because they were looking for something challenging to do. “Cycling combined with fundraising seemed like the perfect way to go,” he said. It was Mr Bowie’s mum, Sue Bowie, who suggested they support St John. “I suggested St John as our immediate family plus my parents have had a St John ambulance attend them seven times, that I can remember, over the years. From heart attacks to car accidents to ski accidents, they have been there. I reminded him of this and he was quite surprised at how often they had been there for us,” she said. Their aim is to have finished the trip by December 10. A Facebook page and a blog have been set-up with a link where people can donate to St John. The blog about their journey can be accessed http://watchmeride. wordpress.com.

Ice worlds: Researching Earth’s frozen frontiers For centuries, the Antarctic and Arctic ice caps have seemed almost unconquerable – the last areas of the planet to escape man’s onslaught and remain relatively untouched in their natural state. However, with climate change, tourism and the search for untapped resources threatening to change all that – and fast – understanding these places and our relationship with them may never have been so important. Tom Doudney talked to Lincoln University scientists Peter Almond, Emma Stewart, Gary Steel and Vic Metcalf about their work in the polar regions. ‘PRISTINE’, precious and breathtaking are the sort of words often used to describe Antarctica. For most of us, having grown up with images of gleaming blue and white ice shelves, they’re sentiments we can easily relate to. For soil and landscape processes researcher Peter Almond, such words take on a more than sentimental level of significance. “You can easily be dropped off in a helicopter on a land surface that’s three million years old and it’s made up of this interlocking fabric of desert pavement that has never been touched for that period of time and you step onto it and you sink into it and you destroy it.” In a situation where just walking from one valley to the next poses an ecological threat, Mr Almond is starkly aware that the benefits of field research must be carefully weighed against the damage done in carrying it out. In the age of climate change, the work of Mr Almond and others is important partly because, as he explains, if you want to understand how the soil life will be affected in the future, you need to know what is going on now. “The Antarctic Peninsula at the moment is one of the places of fastest temperature changes on the planet. At the Dry Valleys, which we’re closer to at Scott Base, those large temperature changes haven’t yet been felt. There is a certain buffering capacity to having a whole lot of ice around and that’s one of the reasons why change is likely to be faster in the future.” At the other end of the world, human geographer Emma Stewart has been working with Inuit communities to develop a code of conduct for the ever-increasing numbers of cruise ship visitors turning up in the Arctic each year. With influxes of exploration vessels, oil and gas companies and others expected, she and her colleagues are now looking to broaden the scope of that code. “The north-west passage has been ice-free for the last number of summers, so all eyes are on the Arctic for its resources,” she says. “It has become an increasingly busy place.” “There’s concern that there’s a Titanic-sized disaster waiting to happen of course and that will be an environmental as well as a culturaltype catastrophe.” As marine biologist Vic Metcalf and her fellow researchers have found, Antarctica is also becoming a busier place and not without consequences.

“Around the research bases there are actually very, very high levels of some pollutants, including pesticides, flame retardants, personal products – as high as any North American major city.” Worryingly, these chemicals are showing up in Antarctic fish, which Ms Metcalf says underscores the need for changes to environmental practises. Her other research has focused on observing and predicting the effects of environmental

CANTERBURY anti-violence organisations are calling for local men to ‘leather up’ and ride with the annual White Ribbon Motorcycle Ride when it rolls into Christchurch on Friday, November 23. The ride, organised by the Families Commission, forms part of the November White Ribbon campaign to raise awareness of, and support for, local anti-violence initiatives, specifically ending violence towards women. “This is a fantastic opportunity for Christchurch men to stand up and show they’re man enough to stop violence towards women,” Mana Tane Ora Ki Waitaha chairman Eru Waiti said. “We want attitudes to change and our local men to lead this charge, and the ride is an opportunity to start conversations and to hear from men who are passionate about ending violence. We can’t wait to hear their stories.” Every year about 14 women are killed, while there are more than 3500 convictions recorded against men each year for assaults on women. Police estimate only 20 per cent of the violence is actually reported. Carol Carlisle of Barnardos said the riders
brought joy and positive messages to thousands of men, women and children in Canterbury. “Violence and abuse have no future in our society and should never be tolerated. The messages from these riders are inspiring and send our men away with a good understanding of healthy relationships.” The riders are led by the Patriots Defence Force Motorcycle Club, made up of former and current members of the armed services, and Te Ahi Kikoha, a Maori organisation of antiviolence campaigners. The ride began in 2009 and now reaches more than 80 communities during November and will pass through Christchurch on a motorcycle ride that covers some 5000 kilometres from Bluff to Whangarei. Anyone can join the ride providing they have a current licence, a warranted bike with a minimum engine size of 250cc and are willing to make the pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence towards women. Local riders can join the ride or escort the riders into and out of Christchurch. For details visit www.whiteribbon.org.nz or contact White Ribbon.

Big plans: A map and artist’s impression of the planned new $400 million Waterloo Business Park in Hornby. Images: Supplied
PROPERTY investors from Auckland and Southland have joined forces to create a $400 million business park in Hornby. The Waterloo Business Park is a joint venture between John Sax, of Auckland-based Southpark Corporation Ltd, and Inky Tulloch’s Southland-based investment company. Its backers say it’s a signal of confidence in Christchurch. The park was officially launched by Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee last Thursday. The 114-hectare business park, bounded by Pound and Waterloo roads, will be one of the biggest in New Zealand. It’s the same size as Highbrook, Auckland’s largest master-planned business site. The owners plan to create a fully landscaped business park complete with a central hub and plaza featuring fountains, boulevard-style roads, attractive outdoor areas and amenities such as a gym and cafes. Work on the $30 million infrastructure is set to begin later this month, with the sprawling site to be developed in stages over several years. The site is TC1 land, with the ensuing benefits around foundations when building. Mr Sax said the Christchurch market presented immense opportunities for developers and investors. “We are absolutely confident of business growth in Christchurch and Waterloo Business Park is designed to meet the burgeoning demand for warehousing and logistics, as well
as light industry and manufacturing as the have a network of cycle and running organisations. Items submitted must include a phone number and any associated costs and must not be more than 50 words. Business parks can be pretty arid and grey; we are paying close attention to master planning, including water features, green park-like courtyards and paved boulevards. Fines for rinsing paint into streams PAINTERS who rinse their brushes into Christchurch streams and waterways risk being fined for the pollution. Environment Canterbury (ECan) recently issued two infringement notices due to paint from rinsing brushes, rollers and other painting equipment being washed into a stream or onto land where it could enter a waterway. ECan’s regional manager RMA monitoring and compliance Brett Aldridge said each infringement notice carried with it a $750 fine. “We are beginning to see an emerging issue associated with the huge increase in house repairs and this serves as a warning to those in the painting industry as well as to others handling painting equipment that they need to wash out their gear in a responsible manner,” Mr Aldridge said. “It is important that all people carrying out painting, plastering and concreting work, especially as part of the rebuild effort, understand their obligations and how to dispose of the wash water appropriately to protect streams and rivers,” he said. All of Christchurch’s storm water drains, streams and creeks eventually flow into the Avon (Otakaro) and Heathcote rivers (Opawaho), or the estuary/Ihutai, and these are highly valued by Christchurch residents. ECan said paint and wash water must be disposed of to the sewer or trade waste system, otherwise if discharged into streams it could kill fish and invertebrates. Mr Aldridge said people or companies caught discharging wash-down water into streams or onto land where it could get into a stream could expect to receive infringement fines. “If we discover people repeatedly offending, prosecution is the likely end result. If they are found guilty, offenders face penalties that are

It will now go forward for more detailed design. The decision marks a major step forward for the project, which is designed to link and support the new communities planned for the area either side of the new motorway, in Halswell and Wigram. The new bridge is estimated to cost $3,333,523, which is nearly $540,000 above the original $2.8 million budgeted for it in the council’s long-term plan. However, it is the cheapest of the three bridge options examined by the council and the Riccarton Wigram Community Board, which also endorsed the basic bridge option following lively debate between board members last month. motorway, there was a desire to create a ‘landmark’ or ‘gateway’ bridge to mark the entrance to Christchurch, with the ‘landmark’ bridge costing nearly $1.9 million over the original budget and a second option of a ‘feature’ bridge costing almost $1.5 million over budget. However, councillors agreed on the basic bridge option, given the costs involved and the fact there was now the potential to build a landmark structure closer to the city boundary as part of the motorway’s second stage. Councillors also requested staff to investigate incorporating additional design elements that would fit within the budgeted amount at a later date if funding support from the New Zealand Transport Agency was provided. The new Carrs Rd bridge will form part of the walking and cycleway network proposed in the South West Area plan, which supports the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy and fits in with the wider pedestrian and cycle networks included in the Christchurch Transport Plan.

Those things stem from living in poverty? It’s actually really complex. [Child poverty] is always [framed] as a simple thing that can be magically taken away or improved with a quick fix solution but it’s so complex and interwoven which makes it so much harder to tackle. It’s not going to be cheap or easy to get rid of, it’s going to be complicated and it’s going to be expensive

And if we don’t address it soon? Poverty affects everybody and a child living in poverty almost always is in poverty for the rest of their life and there are so many more obvious things that stem from that. Getting poor education will have obvious implications later on in life like not being able to get a job… poor health leads to worse health problems. And the effects can be intergenerational as well? Absolutely. Kids who are in poverty are more likely to get into bad socioeconomic conditions or other things like getting into drugs and alcohol and getting into crime. All these things that affect everybody stem from not addressing these problems in their earlier lives.

ABOUT 270,000 New Zealand children, or one in every four, are living in poverty. The Child Poverty Action Group is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting acknowledgement of and action on the issue. Tom Doudney talked to a spokesperson for the group’s Christchurch branch, Natalie Blakely. How are we tracking when it comes to tackling child poverty in New Zealand, have we been making any progress? Natalie: We’re on top of the OECD (worst) for child poverty. It kind of all happened since the mid-1980s, that’s when we really had the sharp turn down in child poverty. It did get better in the mid-2000s when we had working families and an economic rise. However, since 2007 it has dropped more constantly. In retrospect we look at the mid2000s and the children in the deepest of poverty weren’t helped at all by the economic recovery. We’re trying to get the message out that it is happening in New Zealand, it does exist, there is child poverty and that it’s more complex than just work or not having a job or people being on a benefit or anything. It’s about children with inadequate education, healthcare, or housing as well.

FORMER Christchurch man Nick Paulsen has returned to his home city to open a new boutique, which has recently opened at the Re:Start mall in Cashel Street. Mr Paulsen plans for the boutique, called Clash, to stay in Christchurch even if it means opening a separate store when the container
mall goes. He said Clash tried to attract people into the store and did not sell online. It won the Red retail design awards in the apparel division, beating brands such as Kathmandu, Barkers and Glassons. The inspiration for the name Clash came from
1960s rock culture during the time when bands such as the Sex Pistols and The Clash were popular and fashion was becoming expressive, playing against the rules. The boutique wants to make its brand about a community of art, music and fashion and give people an overall experience. Mr Paulsen supports others who are starting out, such as AUT fashion student Helena Olsen who created a design for Clash, and also sponsors local bands who wear the products at local gigs. Mr Paulsen’s boutique was the first store in New Zealand to stock Nick Campbell sunglasses. Other brands Clash has introduced to New Zealand include Circlepark, Tatty Devine, byAMT, Bing Bang, Thrashion – which is jewellery made from recycled skateboards, Baracuta, Tuesday Night Band Practice, Long Clothing, MERC, Weekend Offender, Modström, SWOP Notebook, and there are plans for more. Mr Paulsen grew up in Christchurch, worked for Amazon and has been involved in the Huffer move to retail. After working in the business for years, 18 months ago Mr Paulsen knew it was about time to open a store of his own and felt New Zealand needed Making a statement: Nick Paulsen’s new boutique at the Re:Start mall on Cashel Street. something like Clash. ACTION PACKED ENTERTAINMENT at Ruapuna Speedway This Saturday night (November 17) will be the 51st season of action at the Mag and Turbo Ruapuna Speedway. It will kick off in emphatic style with the first round being the General Tyres Sprintcar War of the Wings Series. This is hot on the heels of the hugely successful New Zealand Championship at Ruapuna. The Sprintcar class has experienced another ‘growth spurt’ with thirteen of the 800 horsepower V8 engined cars now based in the city. This complements similar numbers in Cromwell and Invercargill, while there are now three cars in Nelson.
Twenty two cars are entered for Saturday night’s races, with special guest Bryan Menefy from Palmerston North, who will be venturing south for the meeting. Following the pre-season practices, local hotshot Ray Baughan will carry plenty of confidence into the series. Baughan and his team have put considerable effort into updating his Eagle chassied Mopar engined car, and he was running in the low 13 second bracket at the final practice. There are no fewer than four rookies in the local ranks, including former Cricketing International Nathan Astle, who showed enough pace and form at the practices to
be considered a ‘dark horse’ for the series, while the unheralded arrival of Invercargill driver Brent Gaudion, who now lives in Rolleston, has robbed the deep south of their top driver while adding plenty to the Ruapuna fields. Support races will be held for TQ Midgets, Midgets, Modified Sprints and Sidecars. See you there!

Christchurch’s Taylor Swift Jessica Schaap jessica.s@mainlandpress.co.nz
CHRISTCHURCH could have its own Taylor Swift. Eighteen-year-old Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti student Rachel Hamilton has just released her first single to iTunes, and it has reached number 34 on the New Zealand iTunes pop charts. Miss Hamilton’s school has been supportive of her musical talents. She was given a grant by the Board of Trustees to record her single with session musicians and she combined this grant with some of her own and her mum’s money to create Judgy Little Eyes. At first she was nervous about whether people would like the song but says she has received “heaps of messages” from people saying they like it. Judgy Little Eyes is a catchy pop song. It is about feeling judged by others for being different. “How groups of girls at the mall will look you up and look you down,” she said, quoting a lyric from the song. “Just because you don’t look like them, that you’re different, or have your own style. And in fact it’s what makes us different that makes us ourselves,” Miss Hamilton said. The song tells of hope that one day that will change. She said the song has reached number 34 on the New Zealand pop charts and 67 on the New Zealand top 200 list for all genres. She was pleased with her achievement. “I couldn't believe it! I thought songs only get into the top 200 list if they’re really big artists, so for it to get as high as 34th, it being my first song released, was so exciting.” The people she looks up to most are English vocalist and guitarist Ed Sheeran as she likes the raw sound of the guitar. live and started teaching herself when she was 13. She has been “building blocks” to where she wants to be musically. She began performing in cafés and started her own YouTube account and a Facebook page. Next she plans to send her single to radio stations. She’s also inspired by American singer and songwriter Anna Nalick. “I like her because her lyrics are so real and raw, her melodies are really powerful,” she said. “It’s easy to take whatever part of her songs you want and relate it to some part of your life. Also, her voice is beautiful. The other singer I really, really love is Sara Bareilles. For much the same reasons, but her songs are a little more playful and sometimes sarcastic, a little bit like Judgy Little Eyes.” Miss Hamilton wrote several of her own original songs, which she often gets her ideas for when she was out walking. She has uploaded a couple of her original songs to her YouTube account. Judgy Little Eyes can be found by searching Rachel Hamilton on the iTunes store.

Delicacy A FRENCH romantic comedy, Delicacy is directed by David and Stephane Foenkinos. It begins with the story of Nathalie and Francois, newly married, very much in love and with their whole lives ahead of them. But then Francois dies and Nathalie is left alone and heart-broken. To cope, she buries herself in her job and for several years, does little else but work. Then, to the dismay of her friends and workmates she begins an unlikely friendship with one of her colleagues, Markus. Nothing to get upset about, except that Markus, (Francois Damiens) is everything Nathalie is not, he’s awkward, unsophisticated, and well, no oil painting. He’s also Swedish. Again you might wonder what the fuss is about - except for one important detail - Nathalie is played by Audrey Tatou. Let’s face it; Audrey Tatou can never quite leave behind the role that made her famous – Amelie. Elements of Amelie’s inherent goodness have ingrained themselves in all her characters. And so she will forever stand for all that is beautiful, good, and
kind in the world - she is pretty much ‘perfect’. Because as well as directing the film, David Foenkinos also wrote both the screenplay and the novel on which the film was based, it’s safe to assume the screen version is just as he intended it to be, and I imagine that includes the casting of Nathalie. So it’s not hard to see the point of the story - how a perfect but broken-hearted woman finds her way back into life with the help of a man other people barely notice. It’s not Beauty and the Beast, but you get the idea. I wouldn’t be surprised to see an American version of this in a year or so, but it would be a very different beast, without any of the subtlety that makes this film so charming. Delicacy works as a movie principally because it is French. It’s the type of sweet, gentle comedy they make seem effortless. Delicate by name, delicate by nature.
Delicacy is playing now in Christchurch.

Violinist moves to her own tune She has played at the Sydney Opera House alongside Florence and the Machine and supported stars like Olivia Newton-John, Il Divo and Michael Bolton. But for modern violinist Yoomia Sim, her biggest musical challenge has been letting go. Samantha Early explains. BORN in Korea and raised in Christchurch, Yoomia first started her love affair with music by playing the piano. She took up violin after seeing a family friend play it and joined her sister’s class, to solve her mother’s babysitting problems. “As a nine-year-old I was in a class with these toddlers, I was the oldest kid there.” Her late father, a talented guitarist, was a great influence on her life. “He worked in a law firm but he always performed really amazingly so I thought I can just do that with the violin.” At the age of 16 Yoomia auditioned and was accepted into the University of Canterbury’s music programme. She spent time working in the fashion world, as a brand manager for Dolce and Gabana in London and for Trelise Cooper in New Zealand, but following the September 4, 2010 earthquake she realised she wanted to pursue her passion for music full-time. Now she’s learning from artists at the top of their international careers, such as Florence Welch, by performing with them. “She was just amazing to work with and afterwards she gave me this massive bear hug, saying ‘You look amazing’. She was so petite and I was so gobsmacked.”
Her real love though is improvising and she said it took her a long time to break away from the rigidity of her training and let the music flow. “I love improvising live. It’s a rush and it’s an art form itself, just letting go, because I am a classically trained musician and we are always taught to play correctly, what is on the page.” She dreams of having her own show and at the moment she is producing an EP of her original music, which blends violin with electronic music, in collaboration with other artists. “I suppose the classical world will judge me because I’ve gone and used the violin as something else… but I’ve got to follow what I want, right. It’s about finding your own voice and sharing what you want to share.” Her aim: to make people happy, make them dance and make them feel free to express themselves. A way she expresses herself is with outfits that would be at home on the runways of London or Milan. “I just love fashion, it’s just who I am. Sometimes people look at me funny, especially in Christchurch!” Yoomia can be found online through her website www.yoomia.com or her Facebook page Yoomia – Modern Violinist.

Candid Valerie sets the record straight Mainland Press and CTV reporters
VALERIE Adams is only 28 years old, but she has plenty to share from her life of personal and sporting drama, Olympic triumph and neartravesty. Her autobiography, written alongside prominent sports writer Phil Gifford, leaves everything out on the table. They had been working on the book for more than a year but now, following the London Olympics, seemed the right time to bring it out. Adams says she’s very pleased with it. “When people read it they read me and I’m pretty much straight shooting, what you see is what you get, and that’s what I want people to read in the book.” She says Mr Gifford was able to draw her stories out of her. “I was very open with him, there were times that were emotional to the point where I was crying and he started crying as well so it was awesome, we had a little blubber to ourselves.” The book covers her life from childhood in South Auckland, where she stood out, reaching more than 180 centimetres in height at just 12 years old, to her pain of her mother’s death when she was just 15, to the break-ups in 2010 with both her husband and her coach of 11 years, Kirsten Hellier. “It was big hell; it was sort of two divorces in one year. She was the one that called it off and this is one of the reasons I wanted to do the book, I wanted to set things straight. “Looking back now it was good timing but at the time it was pretty rough to take on the chin.” She also describes the drama of the London Olympics, where she won the gold medal after her rival, Nadzeya Ostapchuk, failed a drugs test, and her life in barracks-style accommodation in Switzerland where she trains for nine months of the year with her coach Jean-Pierre Egger.

Visit Muscle People Physiotherapy and let their team of trained physiotherapists assess your movement and posture, using technology that is a first for New Zealand. Do you want to improve your performance, address back pain and nagging injuries? What was once the exclusive domain of elite professional sports teams overseas is now available at Muscle People next to the YMCA in Hereford Street. Muscle People are aligned with several international organisations to deliver world class services for muscle, joint, nerve and pain conditions to the people of Canterbury. The Movement and Posture Assessment will identify why you suffer from recurring injuries, address your current condition, improve your physical performance and reduce the risk of future injuries. The assessment technology has been popular over the years for top athletes, including North American professional sports teams in the National Hockey League, NFL, NBA and college sports teams. It identifies key movement faults which create injuries, and is also used to improve performance through corrective exercise programmes. “By screening key functional movement patterns, the Movement and Posture Assessment readily identifies any weaknesses, immobility, lack of stability and imbalances which may affect your performance,” says Laurie Moore, Managing Director from Muscle People. “This assessment is for everyone who wants to improve their performance, whether they are an athlete, an office worker or a person with recurrent back pain who want to identify causative factors of their pain and then address them.” Muscle People design an individualised programme based on the findings in a comprehensive report. “We offer treatments and exercise programmes to correct these factors. Our aim is to have our clients not just back to their pre-injury state, but to improve their overall condition and help them achieve their desired performance level,” says Laurie.

Homegrown tomatoes simply irresistible
A bumper crop, ready to be enjoyed fresh or made into relish, sauce or soup.
Rachel Vogan shows off her good taste
W
HEN I am asked why I grow my own fruit and vegetables, in particular tomatoes, some are surprised when I answer, “They just taste better”. Of course, I am strongly motivated by the fact it’s easy to do, is fun and exceptionally rewarding, too. But flavour is my primary motivator – my tummy rules the roost. Depending on where you live, around
Labour Weekend is the traditional time to plant tomatoes (not sow seeds), unless you live in colder areas where the odd sneaky late frost may still be lurking about. In these areas, hold off planting until the fear of frosts has passed – or be prepared to cover up tomatoes on chilly nights. Seeds should be sown in spring, ready for planting out in late October, November or December.
New toms on the block ‘Campari’ is a vibrant, bright red tomato, that ripens evenly along its truss. It’s certainly taking the gardening world by storm and is sure to become a household name due to its intense juicy and flavoursome fruit. Some liken its flavour to that of the tomatoes your grandparents used to grow, so if you only have room for one tomato this season, it may as well be this one. It’s a midsized plant, meaning it will adapt to life in a container as well as the garden. ‘Campari’ is exclusive to Mitre 10 and available all over the country.
If you are organised (unlike me this year) and have sown your own seeds, well done! Select only the strongest seedlings to plant out and discard any that look wonky or yellow. If you have a lot of seedlings left over, give them to friends or family. Or pot them up and grow them on for neat living Christmas gifts, or maybe sell leftovers at the school fair. Don’t panic if you have not sown your

‘Tomaccio’, the sweet raisin tomato, has finally arrived. These bite-sized mouthfuls of joy pack a punch with an intensely sweet flavour when picked fresh or dried at home. Tomato aficionados love them as a sweet snack or a gourmet ingredient in pastas, pizzas, salads and other dishes. This vigorous and tall-growing variety needs support as it will easily reach 2m if left to its own devices. Pinch out all side shoots every week so that only the main stem is growing; also, remove the first flower cluster. Plants and seeds are widely available. I bought my plant in Dunedin back in September, planted it in a large pot (it’s still inside), and since then it has doubled in size. I can’t wait for the fruit to appear.

own seeds, as young plants are widely available in the plant shops for the next month or two. Grow Fresh seedlings are good ones to look out for; you will find rows and rows to choose from, in a wide range of varieties, sizes and types. Depending on the variety you grow plant them about 50cm-70cm apart. Any closer and the fruit will have trouble ripening and developing properly.
Country Gardens are giving away an Apricot Tomcot to one lucky winner. Peach sized sweet juicy apricots with exceptional sweetness. Great for eating, freshly picked or for cooking. Reliable and heavy fruiting.

V8 SuperTourer stars look to title fight at Ruapuna
Top performer: Scott McLaughlin in action.
From the sideline
with Pete Smith
Points leader: Scott McLaughlin will be hoping to hold his lead at the top of the table.
Chasing glory: John McIntyre sits just behind McLaughlin on points.
IN a season packed with drama, the first overall V8 SuperTourer title will go down to the wire and the spoils of championship glory look to be heading to either points leader Scott McLaughlin or sprint series champion John McIntyre. With one round to go - at the Powerbuilt Tools Raceway, Ruapuna over the weekend of November 23, 24 and 25 - young Gold Coastbased ace McLaughlin heads the table with 2995 points ahead of McIntyre’s 2840. Each get to drop their lowest scoring round, but after a zero pointer at Manfeild, McLaughlin is in the stronger position heading to the South Island finale with his points tally intact no matter what. It is a remarkable turnaround for the 19year-old, who has not just hit the sweet spot in his SuperTourer, but who has also excelled across the Tasman with wins in the Dunlop development series and a superlative sixth place with Jono Webb at Bathurst. He is not only in pole position for the overall SuperTourer title at Ruapuna, but could snatch the endurance series title from his hero Greg Murphy there too. “The key was that we never put our heads down,” McLaughlin said. “For sure, Manfeild brought us incredibly bad luck but to come back shows just what sort of
team I have around me. I never gave up and I knew if I could just have few good runs we would get back in the title race. Luckily for me, we did exactly that and here I am.” McIntyre, meanwhile, came off the back of narrowly winning the sprint element of the first season of V8 SuperTourers and had every expectation that this run of form would continue with Jono Lester on board with McIntyre for the enduro races - but it has not been as simple as that, as he explained. “We can definitely bounce back from Pukekohe. It was the first time we have not been on a V8ST podium, so we know we are capable of better. We just produced a very poor performance coupled with a few issues out of our control and this gave the end result. The championship title will be very difficult due to us having to drop a score but you never say ‘never’ until the last lap of the last race.” Both of the leading contenders were looking forward to returning to Ruapuna. In the first V8 SuperTourer event there earlier this year, McLaughlin was fast but fragile and McIntyre turned in what he believes was one of his best ever races. Both were adamant they would be at the sharp end of the action when they took to the track.

AS I grow older, I find myself ‘reflecting’ more and more about life. What prompted me to reflect this week was when I thought about last week’s Melbourne Cup. Over its hundred plus year history it has grown to become one of the world’s most prestigious horse races. Everyone wants to own a Melbourne Cup winner. Or do they? What intrigued me was that the field of 24 that went to the barrier this year was made up of 18 foreign-bred and largely foreign-owned horses. This was an amazing statistic and it got me thinking why would that be? I don’t think the purse, large as it was at $6 million, was enough to ship horses from the other side of the world for a two-minute run. I think they came down in such great numbers this year because they genuinely thought they could win the coveted gold cup. What has happened in the Southern Hemisphere in recent times in the racing industry has been the reluctance by owners to invest in a true two-mile stayer. In years gone by it was not uncommon for a Melbourne Cup starter to be eight or nine
years of age with only a handful of starts in its career. These champions were ‘set’ for the big race. Wealthy owners were prepared to invest in their horses for many years with very little return until they could claim ‘the big one’. Not so today. Most horses are owned by syndicates who demand trainers start their horses as two year olds and race the shoes off them so they can see whether they are worth persevering with. The result is that many fine horses can be washed up by the time they are four or five and will never have the conditioning to line up in the likes of the Melbourne Cup. Today’s owners want good results yesterday, not tomorrow, and the poor old trainer has to oblige because the owners are writing the cheques. Obviously the situation in the Northern Hemisphere is different and I suspect a lot of ‘old’ money is still being invested in thoroughbred racing and the traditional style of owner is prepared to be patient and wait for a true champion to develop. How long will it be until generation XYZ in the North starts demanding instant results from trainers who may be unable to deliver?

ORGANISERS of the Canterbury A&P Show are keen to impress the Royals, Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, when they visit Christchurch tomorrow. “It’s certainly an honour to have them,” Canterbury A&P Association president Richard Lemon said. He and the show’s 150th Anniversary Committee chairman Donald Wright understood the Prince wanted to see the livestock while the Duchess wanted to do some shopping. “I’ll find her a new hat!” Mr Wright said. More than 500 volunteers had worked to bring together New Zealand’s largest agricultural and pastoral show, which opened yesterday at the Canterbury Agricultural Park and continues today and tomorrow. It features more than 3000 animals, close to 7000 livestock and feature competition entries and 600 trade exhibitors.
Mr Lemon said they were expecting about 100,000 people to attend over the three days. Farmers have been deep in preparation, with some even staying with their animals overnight in the dairy cow tent, complete with a mini kitchen set-up and televisions, to ensure their animals were comfortable, clean and looking their best. Show-goers were advised to plan their journey before leaving home, with construction of the Christchurch Southern Motorway expected to cause delays for drivers if they were not organised. To celebrate the 150th anniversary, a commemorative book charting the history of the A&P Association and annual Show, When Country Comes to Town, has been released. “It shows the strength of the association, I believe, in that generations of families continue to support it,” Mr Lemon said. He pointed out a photo of himself in the book, at the age of six,

having a picnic in the show car park. Meanwhile, people attending A&P shows this season were being urged to wash their hands thoroughly after touching farm animals to prevent the spread of serious diseases such as tetanus, giardia and ringworm. Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey said children were most at risk as they needed to be reminded to wash their hands regularly. “Last month a young Canterbury girl was being treated at Starship Hospital after contracting a strain of E. coli while feeding a lamb. Fortunately she is lucky to have made a full recovery.” Dr Humphrey congratulated the organisers of the Canterbury A&P Show for having hand sanitiser available and encouraged others to follow their lead.

New Brighton children enjoy new gumboots Continued from page 1
Fruit-filled day promotes healthy eating at Richmond School
Tom Doudney tom@mainlandpress.co.nz
KEEPING your feet dry can sometimes be a challenge for children walking to school on earthquake-damaged footpaths – but thanks to an act of charity, Central New Brighton pupils are well equipped to handle it. Last week the school, which is among those marked for merger by the Ministry of Education in its shake-up of Christchurch education, was gifted more than 100 pairs of gumboots by the Kiwanis Club of Waimairi, using money donated by other Kiwanis clubs in Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Kiwanis member Rhondda Boxall said they had consulted with the school on what would meet their needs and gumboots were thought to be a practical way of dealing with wet and muddy conditions, especially in winter time. “Hopefully the children next winter will be able to get around this area, because it is so badly damaged, and be able to wear the gumboots.”
Central New Brighton School associate principal Tricia Carroll said the school was very thankful to the Kiwanis. “Gumboots are something that is such a basic everyday item but lots of families don’t have them or the children have grown and they no longer fit.” Pupil Sophie Hawley, 7, said having the gumboots was cool. “Sometimes I can’t find a pair of gumboots and sometimes when it rains I need some shoes to put on because mum doesn’t let me get my other shoes all muddy.” Jack Baker, 7, thought his gumboots would be really useful for an upcoming family trip to Peel Forest. Ms Boxall said the Kiwanis continued to fundraise and look for ways to help support children in need. STRAWBERRIES, bananas, kiwifruit, apples and grapes filled the playground, the classrooms and even the reception and staffroom of Richmond School as they celebrated 5+ A Day Fruit and Vegetable Month last Thursday. The school’s junior classroom organised and hosted a shared lunch and dress-up parade to promote 5+ A Day healthy eating. As part of a nationwide competition organised by the 5+ A Day Charitable Trust, the students planned the event as a way to promote healthy eating habits and options at school and at home. Even before ‘healthy lunches’ hit the mainstream news recently, these students were learning about food groups and surveying their community about their fruit and vegetable eating habits. In response to their research, these six and seven year-olds decided the community just

needed to ‘taste test’ a wider variety of fruit and vegetables, hence the shared lunch. Thanks to the school’s participation in the ‘fruit in schools’ and KidsCan programmes, as well as generous donations from local businesses The Green Grocer and Grove-Lea orchard, fruit smoothies, fruit skewers and 5 + vegetable soup were on offer for all to try. Despite it being early in the season, strawberries were the overall favourite in the dress-up parade with students (and teachers) of all ages sporting creative and colourful costumes. Another piece of costume innovation was a cardboard vending machine that stocked only fruit. Overall the day was a success with parents, whanau and community members coming together to share in the students’ learning and ‘taste test’ their creations. Alice Keeling is a teacher at Richmond School.

THE Zon of the Lines Skateboard Invitational Series featured some of Christchurch’s best skateboarders battling it out for a place in the finals being held in Auckland. The event was held on the rooftop of Northlands Mall on November 4 and featured a course that was customised especially for the event with street-inspired obstacles such as a picnic table, flat bar and a wheelchair ramp. The winners of the Christchurch event will go to the grand final in Auckland on December 1, along with other winners from Wellington, 20 of Auckland’s best and two wildcard entrants. The winner of the Christchurch competition was James Kingston, who took home $1250. Kingston, who has been skating since he was 10, skated to the top of picnic table from the flat, launched kickflips and backside flips off and over the wheelchair bump, setting it up later as a gap to flat bar, nailing blunt transfers, crooked grinds, a backside Smith grind and a backside tailslide within minutes. Jack Woodrow placed second with jaunty manoeuvres and the occasional wayward line, which saw him attacking a nearby shopping
trolley bay with frontside 50-50s. This and other technical lines included the likes of a frontside nosegrind 180 out on the picnic table. Other placings were Hootie Andrewes – third, Josh Bamford – fourth, Cade WilsonRuss – fifth and Olly Wilson – sixth.
Sweating it out for Cancer Society Jessica Schaap
A FITNESS circuit was held last Friday and Saturday to raise money for the Cancer Society. It was run by Christchurch personal trainer Blair Williamson at his Avonhead gym. He has recently been nominated for the New Zealand fitness awards along with Les Mills and City Fitness. Mr Williamson, who has been a personal trainer for two and a half years, did not expect to be nominated for the awards but said he was nominated as he had a good system in place. He was inspired to raise money for the Cancer Society as two of his grandparents died from cancer and because it was a common disease to die from. The circuit was 15 minutes long and could also be done online via Skype as the only equipment needed was dumbbells. Mr Williamson said it was difficult to control the one person who did it through Skype as well as the others, but “it sort of worked out eventually”. The circuit ran from Friday November 9, until 5pm Saturday November 10 and there was a good turnout with plenty of money being Shaping up: Blair Williamson held a fitness circuit for cancer at raised for the society. his Avonhead Gym. A PAIR of Burnside High School students have won the opportunity to travel north and be part of ‘Realise the Dream’, which rewards students who have undertaken excellent science or engineering projects. Twenty students have been selected from New Zealand and only three students are from Christchurch. Realise the Dream has been running since 2003 to reward students and introduce them to possible career opportunities in science and engineering and experience cutting-edge science in New Zealand. The students who are selected have perseverance and have created good pieces of science or engineering.

The students will be hosted by different organisations throughout the North Island, and at the end of the trip students will attend an award ceremony hosted by the Governor General at Government House on December 14. They will be in the running for prizes including money and paid overseas trips. The supreme award includes $7000 plus an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the European Union Young Scientist Competition in Prague in September 2013. George Moon, 17, entered as he has always been interested in computing and was looking for a project to do. The project was suggested to him by his digital technologies teacher. He won the opportunity by creating an online course management system that was used by staff and students at his school to create course manuals. Next year George plans to go to the University of Canterbury to study a Bachelor of Science in computer science. Year 12 student James Watson entered with a Rubik’s Cube solver he created for the electronics competition ‘Bright Sparks’, in which he won first place. James, who knew how to solve the cube himself, made up a code that is entered into the computer. An electronic device, made out of LEGO, popsicle sticks and electronic components and put together with hot glue, then uses the code to work the cube. He plans to continue his interest and study an electronic or engineering-related degree at university.

The past has gone and the near is now here SCHOOLS are not keeping up with the developments in computing, Burnside High School digital technologies teacher and president of the New Zealand Association for Computing, Digital and Information Technology Teachers (NZACDITT) John Creighton says. Computing is needed for all sorts of jobs and areas of life but children are being put in computing class to learn those skills, when they should be applied to all curriculum areas. “Students, parents and industry should be looking into their local schools and asking what is being offered and encouraging students to take digital technologies to support whatever pathways they are interested in going into,“ he said. He would like to get some bright textile technologies students working on designing outfits digitally in his project-based digital technologies class. There are two different streams at Burnside – one class that offers worked-based basic computer skills and another where students can pursue a project of their choice and a third where students are taught advanced digital technology skills in programming, computer science, information systems and media. He said computing classes used to be seen as places where students could easily earn unit standards credits by doing basic tasks such as Powerpoint presentations, but now new opportunities were becoming available to pupils who did networking, game designing and other “interest-driven projects” for their own enjoyment at home. This meant students were able to use their initiative and come up with their own ideas. He said teachers had to let go of being in control of the content and let students use their own initiative. Mr Creighton said it was difficult to find

teachers who could assist students along with projects like this especially for smaller schools. “There needs to be teacher-training initiatives to get skilled practitioners in front of actively engaged students.” In computing, what used to be offered to year 13s was now being taught to year nine students so there needed to be teachers who could keep up, he said. Creighton likes John Dewey’s quote, “If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow”.

Albatross threatened by commercial fisheries Jessica Schaap
COMMERCIAL fishing could result in a decline of the already endangered albatross which nests in New Zealand, a University of Canterbury PhD student has found. A “general passion” for seabirds encouraged Lorna Deppe to study the albatross. She studied the movements, using a tracking technology, of the Chatham albatross, Northern Buller’s albatross and the Northern Royal albatross for three years. She “jumped” on the opportunity to study the albatross as she had an interest in seabirds and where they go. She said there were so many seabirds in New Zealand and tourists never got to see them and she would like to encourage conservation of the species. Nineteen out of 22 albatross species are currently considered threatened and Miss Deppe said the primary threat seemed to be commercial Monitoring: PhD student Lorna Deppe has studied the albatrosses for three years. fisheries. p
