When You Were Older By Catherine Ryan Hyde Manhattan, September 11th 2001. Russell Ammiano is late for work at the World Trade Centre, right across the river from his apartment. He’s dashing out the door when the phone rings. It is a neighbour back home in Kansas, informing him that his mother has died. As Russell tries to take in this devastating news he gazes out of his window at the twin towers, wondering how to tell his boss he needs a few days off. And as he watches, the first plane slices into the North Tower. He has just watched every one of his colleagues die. But Russell is unable to focus on this catastrophic event. He has to put aside his shock and grief and get out of Manhattan. Because back home is his mentally disabled older brother, Ben. And Ben is now all alone. A creature of habit, Ben is unable to deal with any small change to his daily routine. How will he cope with the loss of his mother? And how will Russell cope with Ben?

Even after hours, a registered nurse will answer your call, no matter what time of night or day.” Dr Humphrey said people who called their usual GP afterhours would receive advice and reassurance about the level of care required. “Calling your GP is a fast and effective way of getting health care. Five young children - two girls and three boys - all with strikingly different looks and talents, meet at the elite Atwood school. There is Billy, with a full head of curly red hair, who refuses to go anywhere without his toy football. And Sean, a dark-haired boy with striking blue eyes, who hopes to one day be sheriff. Petite Gabrielle is already a blonde bombshell, while her counterpart Izzie keeps her brown hair pulled back in braids and her outfits neat and businesslike. And finally, there’s well-mannered, blond Andy, with a serious demeanour beyond his years. Together, these children become an inseparable group - known to outsiders as ‘The Big Five’. They lean on one another through all of the bumps and bends of their childhood years, including parental divorce, drinking, drugs, and even death. But when the tight-knit group parts ways after their graduation, their lives veer off in different directions. Tragedy hits when they are separated, and some of the friends are lost forever...The ones who remain will have to deal with the fallout, because ‘The Big Five’ - which they thought would always stay strong - is no longer. While some of the friends are crushed by this stark new reality, others will be surprised to find love and hope where they least expect it...

Buses leave blind people behind Gina McKenzie

AFTER catching buses for over 50 years, visually impaired Burnside resident John Newman was shocked when a bus didn’t stop for him recently and he says it isn’t an isolated incident. Mr Newman, who rides buses four to five times per week, said since the earthquakes bus drivers had expected passengers to hail buses, which was impossible for thousands of visually impaired and blind residents living in Christchurch. He was waiting for bus 20 on Clyde Road late last month with an elderly lady and said they were both surprised when the bus continued past them without slowing down. “I asked the lady to check which number it was and she told me it was number 20. “It didn’t even slow down and just sailed straight past us. It was a cold morning and we had to wait for another half an hour for the next bus. “Luckily the lady offered me a

ride home but the bus should have stopped for us.” Mr Newman laid a complaint with Red Bus over the incident and also contacted Environment Canterbury, who are currently investigating the matter. Red Bus chief executive Paul McNoe said after reviewing bus footage from the morning in question he was unable to see the incident. “We had charter buses in the area at the time so I think Mr Newman may have been confused about the bus as it would not have stopped if it was a charter bus.” Mr McNoe said it was Red Bus policy for people to hail buses but he appreciated that this was difficult for visually impaired bus patrons. “It’s been our policy for a number of years now. “If people are visually impaired they should make themselves known to the driver. “I would also recommend that

they stand near the kerb so the driver is aware that they want to catch the bus.” Mr Newman, who is also president of the Canterbury branch of the Association of Blind Citizens, had raised the issue at the group’s meeting this month. “It’s not just an isolated incident. “Drivers have been getting angry when they stop for us and some have even threatened that they won’t stop next time if we don’t hail them. “We’re considering lodging a submission with the Human Rights Commission.” Mr McNoe said it was unacceptable for drivers to get upset with visually impaired bus users and he encouraged blind and visually impaired bus users who had encountered problems to contact Red Bus to discuss the issue. “I would be very happy to meet with any groups or individuals who have had problems with catching buses due to visual impairments.”

We live in interesting times. Many of us have had our lives turned upside since the first quake struck back in September 2010, and next week we will find out how the bureaucrats want to rebuild our city when they release the Recovery Plan, with its 12 “anchor” projects. There will be those who love the new ideas and those who loathe them and the lobby groups and busy-bodies will let everyone know what the overpaid experts should really have done if they cared a jot about the city, its people and the future.

But that is for another week. Before that fight begins, there is something altogether more entertaining and uniting on the horizon - the Olympic Games. Beginning a week tomorrow, the Games are ready to set the world alight. There are enough Cantabrians going to London, competing in sports that have a solid following in the region, for the Games to be a wonderful, uniting spectacle in our city. There are a dozen athletes from Canterbury competing in London, with a couple of them being genuine medal prospects. While we

Pay up for mayor March to save assets Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker remains the country’s second highest paid mayor, behind Auckland’s Len Brown. Mr Parker received a $2500 rise, taking his salary to $171,200 – a 1.48 per cent increase. In past years Mr Parker has given sums equivalent to his pay increases to charities.

House prices on the rise The average price of houses in Christchurch increased again last month. The median price nationally in June rose slightly to a record high level of $372,000. Buyers in Christchurch and Auckland made up about half of national activity. Values in Christchurch were up 5.8 per cent over the past year and 1.3 per cent over the past three months to sit 1.5 per cent above the peak of late 2007.

wish them well in their personal capacity and victory would be just reward for their years of hard work, we will all enjoy basking in their reflected glory as they strive to add their names to the record books. The earthquakes and the recovery have consumed our lives – and with good reason – but maybe for the next few weeks we can park the subject and replace talk of red, white and green zones with bronze, silver and gold medals as our athletes strut their stuff against the best in the world.

Several hundred people took part in protests on Saturday against the Nationalled Government’s planned asset sales. The placard-wielding protestors marched along Riccarton Road from Hagley Park. Similar protests took place in other cities throughout the country. Traffic was brought to a standstill by the marchers.

Dementia sufferers I read Jo Kane’s 5th July column with interest. She talks about families who have family members suffering from alzheimers or dementia living with them, and if it is time to start a discussion about the right for these people to die with dignity and compassion. I suggest that this column is followed up by an article informing readers what help and services (not only institutionalisation) are available to families in this stressful situation as according to recent statistics and TV news there are a lot of people in this very situation and as time goes on, this problem will only increase. Thumbs up for new intersection Gina McKenzie

DRIVERS using the QEII Drive/Marshland Road intersection have seen their daily commute slashed by up to 30 minutes since traffic lights started operating last weekend. The New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA) spent $3.5 million transforming the former two-lane roundabout, which forms part of State Highway 74, into a four-lane intersection over the past seven months. North New Brighton resident Malcolm Harris had noticed a dramatic improvement at the busy intersection since Saturday. His daily trip to Harewood had been reduced by 20 minutes while his wife had shaved 30 minutes from her Burnside commute.

“Now it’s just straight through, but before I used to crawl along with queues right back to the Innes Road roundabout on the way home. “Having four lanes has made the traffic flow better and getting rid of the trees has made it much safer.” Rebecca O’Carroll, of Burwood, said the timing of the lights at the intersection had worked in her favour. “Before I used to wait for 10 to 15 minutes but it just took two minutes this morning to get through. “Everyone knows where to go now and the lights change quite quickly.” Miss O’Carroll had been bypassing the

intersection prior to the completion of the upgrade. “It was too small and dangerous to get around after the earthquakes so I just took the longer way around.” Tracey Bolitho’s daily commute from Shirley to Harewood had become a lot easier over the past week. “I have been avoiding the roundabout because it took so long to get around but now I have a free turn so it is a lot faster and I don’t have to take the long way around.” NZTA state highways manager Colin Knaggs said the upgrade was important as it was the main route to Lyttelton via the tunnel.

Trespass notice auctioned Samantha Early

A TRESPASS notice banning Cantabrians Unite member Nicholas Lynch from the Christchurch City Council’s headquarters for two years has raised $50 for the organisation. Mr Lynch sold the notice on an online auction site – it had 20 bids with the winner getting it for $47. He offered to frame and sign it but said the winning bidder gave a $50 donation instead. Mr Lynch is the son of Peter Lynch, who organised protests in February and March calling for fresh mid-term council elections and council chief executive Tony Marryatt to be replaced. Mr Lynch junior was banned from going to the council’s civic office in Hereford Street for two years as of June 28, under the Trespass Act. He said he had attended council meetings since January and was posting updates on the Cantabrians Unite Facebook page, but most of

If I the right to ask a person to leave if he believes, was that disruptive I would have been ejected a long time ago.” He said he had interjected in a meeting, telling Mayor Bob Parker he was reporting his comments verbatim and on June 27 he approached Mr Marryatt to ask if feasibility studies had been conducted on major projects in the Annual Plan and whether the ratepayers of Christchurch had a right to access those – the next day he was trespassed. “They’re obviously feeling extremely threatened and as a result took the draconian measure of having me removed from the building.” The council’s general manager human resources Chris Till said during many of the meetings Mr Lynch attended he made

CTV collapse a shock for engineer The collapse of the CTV building in the February 2011 earthquake ‘shocked’ the engineer whose company designed it. CTV reporter Gracie Fea reviews Dr Alan Reay’s evidence given at the Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission and looks at evidence upcoming witnesses would give. THE engineer whose company designed the CTV building told the Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission he was “shocked” when he learned the building had collapsed. Dr Alan Reay, who founded Alan Reay Consultants Ltd in the 1980s, did not believe the Department of Building and Housing investigation into the collapse adequately covered all failure scenarios. It found the September 4, 2010 earthquake would not have diminished the strength of the building, and therefore it treated February 22 as a single, separate event. It also concluded the demolition of the neighbouring three-storey building had little if any impact on the strength of the CTV building,

despite witness reports the shaking made them feel “seasick”. Dr Reay claimed the DBH should not have reached conclusions before the commission of inquiry process began. He put in only three and a half hours work on the CTV building project, while David Harding, who had little experience with multi-storey buildings and no experience with the computermodelling system used to test seismic resistance, put in more than 300 hours. Dr Reay said Mr Harding had substantial experience and could practise on his own. Professor Nigel Priestly, vice-chair of the expert panel commissioned to develop the DBH report, gave independent evidence. He believed the September earthquake had an influence on the collapse. Professor John Mander is yet to give evidence. He would claim the CTV building should have been red stickered after September 4, 2010. William Holmes, who peer reviewed the evidence, said it would be impractical to red sticker buildings based on Professor Mander’s reasoning and would go against decades of engineering practice. He did not believe there was hidden damage after September. Professor Mander would also claim the CTV building was designed and constructed in an innovative fashion. It was meant to be one of the first of a new generation of multi-storey buildings that used precast concrete. Professor Nigel Priestly said if it was innovative, it should have undergone extensive performance testing to make sure it met the building code. Dr Alan Reay would continue to give evidence this week and present the findings of the individual inquiry his company had carried out into the collapse.

End of an era for popular café

Tania Butterfield

SOPHIE’S Café in Papanui will not reopen. The decision was announced on the Sophie’s Café Facebook page last Monday night. On the Sophie’s Café Facebook page, owner Sophie Baldwin Chin wrote, “I’m sorri to inform everyone, Sophie’s Café will not RE OPEN. The landlord has still not done anything since Feb 22 and life must go on.” Ms Baldwin Chin told Mainland Press the decision to close and relocate to Australia was a hard decision. “It is now time for new energy and the younger entrepreneurs to shine,” she said. Sophie’s Café closed exactly one year after the February 22 earthquake. It was expected to reopen in May, but no work had been carried out on the building and ongoing aftershocks had caused the roof to fall in, Ms Baldwin Chin said. “Safety first, so not a hard decision really.” The months after the closure of the café was a difficult time. “I felt lost and for the first time I was not in control.

“We looked at several options for reopening Sophie’s, but decided with the cost to relocate, refurbish and reinsure (our insurance had tripled), it began to feel like it was time to call it a day.” Ms Baldwin Chin and her husband met with staff and helped them find other employment. “It wasn’t easy for them as we were a family and it felt like we were throwing them out, but I do have to stress the hospitality industry were awesome – every staff member was placed in employment within a week.” Ms Baldwin Chin moved to Australia two weeks ago but said she would never forget her time in Christchurch. “When I look back over the last 17 years it brings a flood of tears and emotions. “Through all the lessons, the awesome staff, challenges, triumphs, I feel I have achieved all I can at Sophie’s. It’s time to say goodbye to Christchurch, I’ve certainly had an awesome lifestyle here and met the most amazing friends, clients and business associates. “Thank you, thank you Christchurch.”

FREEVIEW viewers may need to retune their TV or set-top box when the broadcast frequencies change in the Christchurch region onTuesday. The changes only affect Freeview terrestrial viewers who receive signals from the Sugarloaf transmitter. Sky subscribers, analogue TV viewers, TelstraClear cable TV or Freeview satellite TV viewers will not be affected. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s radio spectrum policy and planning manager Len Starling said affected viewers would see a message pop up on their TV screens this week, prompting them to retune when the frequencies change. Retuning can be done simply using the remote control, he said. “Those who watch Freeview TV and share an aerial with others, such as in an apartment building or retirement village, should contact their property manager for advice on whether their installation requires any modification.” Managers of apartments, hotels or motels

There are plenty of women who live in countries like New Zealand that don’t have the strength to stand up for themselves. Girl Guides can help a new generation coming through by giving them the strength to stand up for themselves. If we start helping the next generation we can hope to pass it down to many more,” Marischka said. On their return to New Zealand both girls had an action plan to share with their communities.

WAIMARI district Girl Guiding member Lucy Woods, aged 16, was chosen to represent New Zealand at the international Girls World Forum. Lucy and Aucklander Marischka Lieshout, 18, went to the forum, which was held in Chicago, in the United States, between July 12 and 16. The Girls’ World Forum is the third and final event in a series of forums that are part of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts’ (WAGGGS) global centenary celebrations. So far the world forums have already engaged more than 250 young women in discussions on WAGGGS’ global action theme, ‘Together We Can Change Our World’, which addresses the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Over 500 participants from 145 countries met in Chicago to address the world’s most urgent challenges. Using their well-honed leadership skills, the girls devised systems to end poverty and hunger. They also focused on ways to empower women and promote gender equity. Tapping into their passion for environmental issues, the girls worked to ensure environmental sustainability. Both Lucy and Marischka fundraised to travel to this event, selling sausages, pasta and doing lots of babysitting as well as researching the Millennium Development Goals and how far New Zealand and Girl Guiding New Zealand has achieved towards these global goals. “I want to help make a difference and going to the forum will help me to find out more about how the goals can be achieved no matter what the situation and where in the world we

Visa situation a ‘Catch-22’ Tom Doudney

PORTUGUESE citizen Carlos Costa says New Zealand’s red tape has him trapped in a “Catch-22” situation - unable to get work without a visa, or a visa without work. Mr Costa came to New Zealand last year to visit a sister in Tauranga and liked the country so much he decided he would like to stay and build a life in Christchurch. However, he has found that despite being a skilled and well-qualified electrician, specialising in telecommunications, and fluent in five languages, employers are not prepared to offer him a job without a work visa. At the same time, Immigration New Zealand will not grant him a work visa unless he first gets a job offer. Mr Costa said he had sent more than 1000 emails to potential employers since arriving in the country around the middle of last year. He had also written to Associate Immigration Minister Kate Wilkinson to explain his situation and ask for a temporary open work visa. His request was turned down. Mr Costa has a clean bill of health, no criminal record, is covered for health care and will be eligible for an overseas pension when he retires, meaning he would not impose a social services burden here. He said he wanted to work and add value to the country. He had bought a car and enough furniture and appliances for a house, was preapproved for a home loan by Westpac and had so far brought almost $30,000 of his own money into the country through earnings on investments.

Qualified: Carlos Costa has provided a wealth of documentation to support his visa application.

He said his situation was now getting more urgent as his civil union partner would soon have to leave the country as his own work visa had expired. He would be able to stay if Mr Costa managed to get a work visa. A Department of Labour spokesperson said the principle behind work visa requirements was that New Zealanders were given first opportunities for jobs. Most visas were granted to those with

‘essential skills’ so that “the employment in New Zealand of non-New Zealand citizens and residence class visa holders does not undermine the wages and conditions of New Zealand workers”. A total of 20,704 essential skills applicants had been approved for work visas in the last financial year and all would have been required to submit a job offer with their application, the spokesperson said.

BUSINESSES rebuilding in Christchurch are being encouraged to make sure their premises are accessible to people with disabilities. The earthquake disability leadership group, which was formed to advocate for an accessible post-quake Christchurch, said the benefits of a well-considered design, including gaining the ‘disabled dollar’ outweighed potential costs. “If it works for someone in a chair it works for mums with prams, the elderly with walking frames, someone with a rugby injury, it works for kids. It’s not just about the disabled, it’s about the whole community,” group member BJ Clark said. Fellow group member Justin Muschamp said it was about taking the learning from the past into the future. Chairperson Ruth Jones said some temporary structures that had popped up around the city were hard to access and there was concern that while it may be OK for a short period, there was a tendency for the temporary to become more permanent. “An arts facility that’s going to be around for 10 years, they need to consider what is acceptable and inclusive for people with disabilities,” she said. Mr Clark said the Re:Start container mall

worked well for those with disabilities. “What it says is it can be done. It’s frustrating because when you find something you can’t access you know they haven’t considered that particular issue.” Ms Jones said building things right at the start wouldn’t cost half as much as to retrofit later. By law, new buildings have to be accessible but the group said things like hoists, lifts or stair lifts still became barriers to people in wheelchairs when they were out of order so it was better to have things like ramps instead. They wanted to spread the message that people in wheelchairs had wallets too and they would support businesses that were accessible and avoid ones that were not. They also pointed out the ageing babyboomer population would soon need more accessible premises. “It’s a real difficulty if you are in a shop and you can’t turn round,” group member Paul Arthur said. “We don’t want to have to complain, we just want to shop,” Ms Jones said. All said the earthquake could be turned into an opportunity to make Christchurch more accessible.

THE hallowed ground where John Walker and Dick Tayler achieved Commonwealth Games glory will be auctioned next month to provide funds for the New Zealand Spinal Trust. One hundred and four pieces of the QEII running track will be auctioned online with a function to coincide with the close of the auction on August 10 to be held at the Westpac Business and Community Hub. The track was damaged beyond repair by the February 2011 earthquake. Four pieces with special importance will each be accompanied by other significant items. The 1500-metre start mark with John Walker and Filbert Bayi’s signatures is framed with a photo of the two embracing after the 1974 Commonwealth Games and the games logo. The mile start mark is signed by John Walker and accompanied by a photo of him in full flight during his Gothenburg Mile World Record race and a photo of QEII. The 10,000-metre start mark with Dick Tayler’s signature comes with a picture of him crossing the line and the games logo. The fourth special piece of track is the place where Tayler fell on his back during his celebrations following his 10,000-metre win. New Zealand Spinal Trust chief executive Ben Lucas said the organisation was “stoked” the Christchurch City Council had let them auction the track, which was an important part of Christchurch and New Zealand history. “There is no other way you can get this,” he said. “We’re not quite sure what is happening with QEII but the track is beyond repair. “We have also been able to pull up the entire finish line from the track in one piece. We will present this to the City of Christchurch, with Mayor Bob Parker accepting the gift on the night. We hope that one day it might be incorporated into a new athletics stadium – whatever or wherever that might be.” Mr Lucas, a former paralympian and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in wheel-chair racing, said the track had a special place in his own heart.

Iconic: Ben Lucas with the framed piece of the QEII track.

“I’ve raced on it as well in the past and I’ve got hundreds of thousands of [kilometres] on that track.” Mr Lucas said the auction had already generated a lot of interest and they hoped to raise in excess of $50,000. The ’Back on Track’ auction will take place on Trade Me, starting on August 1 and closing on August 10. During the final two minutes bidders at the function will be able to compete with online bidders for each item.

BP partners with local company to launch a

BP Biodiesel blend at BP Hoon Hay

There has been great support from the farming community with their CRT fuel cards,” said Greg Hill. The biodiesel blend even outsold the Ultimate diesel one day. “Everyone at BP Connect in Hoon Hay is excited about this new trial. We are giving our customers choice while supporting local business and reinvesting in Christchurch,” he said. The BP biodiesel blend will be trialled at the Hoon Hay site for a six-month period with a potential rollout planned for other sites around the country should it prove popular with customers. BP is providing information to their customers to help them make their choice between the biodiesel blend and diesel. “BP is committed to being a market leader and, as part of this, we are always looking at ways to improve what we offer, and diesel has been identified as a key growth category,” BP managing director Matt Elliott said.

Environmentally friendly: BP is rolling out its new biodiesel blend, BP Biodesel blend, as a first step to offering sustainable fuel options.

We’re well aware of the benefits of the biofuels, including the lowering of greenhouse gases (carbon emissions), less reliance on fossil fuels, renewable fuel source and cleaner air. Naturally, being a 5 per cent blend, the benefits of BP Biodiesel blend are relative but we’re doing our bit and it’s a step in the right direction. - BP managing director Matt Elliott.

C

hristchurch drivers are the first to be able to try BP’s new biodiesel blend, as part of a sixmonth trial in partnership with local Christchurch company, Biodiesel NZ. The new biodiesel blend, a blend of normal mineral diesel and up to 5 per cent biodiesel, made using locally grown Canola oilseed and used cooking oil, is available at BP Connect in Hoon Hay. If the trial proves popular, BP will look to rollout the product at other sites around the country. And so far, Canterbury drivers are showing keen support for the new product. “Globally, BP has spent significant amounts of money in exploring new sustainable fuel options, and BP Biodiesel blend, available only at BP Connect in Hoon Hay, is our first step towards offering more sustainable fuel options here in New Zealand,” BP managing director Matt Elliott said. “We’re well aware of the benefits of the biofuels, including the lowering of greenhouse gases (carbon emissions), less reliance on fossil fuels, renewable fuel source and cleaner air. Naturally, being a 5 per cent blend, the benefits of BP Biodiesel blend are relative but we’re doing our bit and it’s a step in the right direction,” Matt said. The biodiesel component is sourced from Biodiesel NZ and is produced from locally grown Canola oilseed and premium used cooking oil. “Biodiesel New Zealand is proud to be supplying BP Hoon Hay with our Christchurch-made biodiesel. It is fantastic that BP have given local diesel users another option to choose a biodiesel blend that has significant environmental benefits,” said Biodiesel NZ’s operations manager Martin Johnson. The local Christchurch connection was also important to BP, according to Matt Elliott. “BP is pleased to be supporting a local Christchurch company, particularly after what the region has been through.” After running the trial for three weeks at BP Connect Hoon Hay, Area Manager BP retail operations Greg Hill is pleased with the response to the new biodiesel blend which is the same price as diesel. “Sales have been evenly split between BP Biodiesel brand and normal BP Ultimate diesel, despite having few Biodiesel pumps.

More about biofuels  Emits fewer greenhouse gases than fossil fuels  Made from renewable resources  Biodiesel blends help reduce New Zealand’s overall emissions of CO2  Biodiesel blends are cleaner burning and help improve air quality  Increases New Zealand’s use of renewable energy  Our source through Biodiesel NZ doesn’t compete with food production – canola is a complimentary planting between crop seasons and can help regenerate nitrogen levels in soils  No noticeable change in power or fuel economy is expected with the Biodiesel blend

BP managing director Matt Elliott.

Massive extension opens at Hornby distribution centre Samantha Early

A “RELENTLESS” 22 months of rebuilding and working in challenging conditions has paid off for Countdown’s newly extended Christchurch Regional Distribution Centre in Hornby. Prime Minister John Key cut the ribbon to the 7000 square metre extension last Wednesday, July 11, in front of the centre’s approximately 135 permanent staff, 50 temporary workers and invited guests. The centre brings the company’s two warehouses, which were located 1.6 kilometres apart in Hornby, into one 29,000 square metre facility on Shands Road, which is capable of holding stock of 8000 different products to be supplied to more than 68 Countdown, Super Value and Fresh Choice stores across the South Island. The $20 million construction and fit-

out programme for the extension started in early October 2011, just a month after racking systems were extensively damaged in the September 4 earthquake. Logistics manager Denva Galloway said they had rebuilt virtually from scratch and called it a “relentless” 22 months. “Once we rebuilt we had February (2011) and then the June and December quakes again, it’s been difficult with snow and massive interruptions as well as working in a construction site.” The expansion was completed in June 2012 and includes motion sensor controlled lighting to reduce power consumption, along with 1.8 kilometres of new racking which was designed to withstand earthquakes. “It’s really important with so much

weight in the air we have confidence it can function really well when we have aftershocks,” Ms Galloway said. Countdown managing director Dave Chambers said it represented a significant investment in the Canterbury region, for which the company was thanked by the Prime Minister. “Christchurch has gone through a hell of a lot and you’ve gone through a hell of a lot as the residents of Christchurch, but we need companies to be committed to the future of this city,” Mr Key said. Ms Galloway said the company planned to be at the site for the long term and they were looking forward to the opening of the extended Christchurch Southern Motorway, which would reduce travel times from Lyttelton Port.

UC and Indonesian bonds strengthen Tania Butterfield

A CONTINGENT of Canterbury University staff were in Indonesia earlier this month talking to four tertiary education facilities about developing collaborative degree programmes between the two countries. Pro-vice chancellors for engineering, science, international and the associate dean for post graduate studies visited the University of Indonesia (UI), Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), Bandung Technological Institute (ITB) and Gadjah Mada University (UGM). International pro-vice chancellor Dr Nello Angerilli said the university met with representatives of Indonesian universities in December as part of the university’s internationalisation strategy. “We are interested in creating opportunities for our students to gain educational experiences in a broad range of countries around the world as important parts of their degree programmes. “Similarly, we are anxious to have international students spend time at UC to share their views and ideas. We are equally interested in academic staff exchanges for research and teaching purposes,” Dr Angerilli said. Canterbury University intended to incorporate international activity in as many teaching and research programmes as possible and were talking to institutions in key countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, China and Malaysia about collaborating on research projects. “Asia has become extremely important very quickly and keeping up with academic and research developments is challenging. “We are entering into agreements with the best universities in each target country in order to be sure that our students and staff have the opportunity to work with the best students

and staff in those countries, either here in Christchurch or overseas,” Dr Angerilli said. Indonesia was on everyone’s radar for potential collaboration, he said. “It is definitely a ‘neighbour’ and we need to better understand the remarkably diverse cultures that exist there and to have Indonesians better know and understand New Zealand. “The country is also on track to be one of the largest economies in the region and is thus becoming an important trading partner and political power,” Dr Angerilli said. Canterbury University has already signed agreements with Bogor Agricultural Institute and Gadjah Mada University and expected the final two agreements to be officiated within the next two months. Initially the universities will work together on earthquake engineering and tectonics/earth science as Indonesia is also on the Ring of Fire. This year, the universities will also focus on developing relationships in the areas of engineering, geographic information system, speech and language pathology, forestry, communications, fine and performing arts and business, Dr Anggerilli said. Eventually, Indonesia will become part of an emerging programme in International Studies where staff and students will study things that can only be studied by physically being in a different country. “The course work completed while away will count towards degree completion,” Dr Angerilli said. The university is now planning a trip back to Indonesia in October for Vice Chancellor Rod Carr and representatives from business, communications and fine arts.

Soak up hits of the 60s and 70s HITS of the 60s and 70s will be performed by Operatunity as part of their daytime concert series in Riccarton on Wednesday. Music from the Beatles, Sonny and Cher, Ray Charles and Johnny Cash will be included in the concert. Operatunity director Geoffrey Hughes said it was difficult to decide on a playlist of songs. “The hardest thing about this concert is what to leave out; there is so much great music from this era.”

Tom Sharplin and his band, along with Tamsyn Miller, will perform during the concert. Mr Sharplin said he was looking forward to the nationwide tour. “We hope those of you who came to our show last year will return this year to enjoy our selection of songs from the 60s and 70s. We have had so much fun rehearsing the show and then recording the songs just for your pleasure. “We grew up in a generation very fortunate to live through such a great era in music and we

Spreydon hosts Celtic concert for Radio New Zealand. Late last year, she travelled to Japan with the CSO, where the highlight was performing in the earthquake devastated city of Sendai. Webby came into contact with the thriving folk music revival of the 1970s at university and then toured throughout Scotland, England and Europe as a performer. Moving to New Zealand in 1989, he turned his instrument-making vocation into a profession while continuing to perform on his own and with others throughout Australasia. The concert starts at 7.30pm at the Irish Society Folk Hall at 29 Domain Terrace. Door sales are $10 for members and $15 for non-members.

GUITARIST Davy Stuart and harp player Helen Webby will perform a mix of traditional Scottish and Irish music at the Christchurch Folk Music Club next Sunday. The performance is part of their nationwide String Wizardy tour. Webby and Stuart have toured together for the last decade. Webby is the principal harpist with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO) while Stuart has won three NZ Folk Album of the Year awards for his work with Scottish Kiwi bands Rua and Claddagh. Alongside her role with the CSO, Webby also performs with the NZ Symphony Orchestra and is a recording artist

CANTERBURY’S 2012 Weedbusters nominees and award winners were recognised and celebrated at a Canterbury Weedbusters information sharing event in Little River earlier this month. The Weedbusters Information sharing day was coordinated and hosted by Environment Canterbury (ECan) and the Department of Conservation and was the first of its kind held for Canterbury Weedbusters. The day celebrated award winners and provided attendees with a range of informative talks on topics ranging from wilding pines to Immediate Steps and ecological perspectives on weeds/restoration. Presentations from the Weedbusters group shared their work successes and challenges over the last year. ECan commissioner Donald Couch presented the awards to the winners and congratulated them on their achievements. “I am thrilled to see so many different organisations and people making a difference in protecting the environment,” Mr Couch said. Judges Jon Sullivan, of Lincoln University, and Mary Lovell-Smith said that as in past years, there was a high calibre of nominees which didn’t make the judging easy. “We awarded overall excellence to the Lindis Pass Conservation group as we were very impressed with their thorough application and what they have achieved. They have done amazing things since their application for the 2008 Weedbusters awards and are deserving of this award this year,” Mr Sullivan said. “Dick Tripp was awarded for his tireless behind-the-scenes work weeding private land in Governors Bay, and Grant Bowden for his amazing efforts ridding the Ernle Clark Reserve of weeds and helping the restoration group in the planting at the reserve. “We highly commend all other individual applicants for their efforts and we hope they will be nominated again in the future,” Mr Sullivan said. Nominees for Canterbury Weedbuster Awards 2012 included both groups and individuals. They were the Lindis Pass Conservation Group, Ernle Clark reserve restoration group, Dick Tripp (Governors Bay Landcare group), Grant Bowden and Alice Shanks (Ernle Clark reserve), Annelies Pekalharing and Denis

Blomquist (Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust) and Lindsay Hamilton and Graham Nairn (Tramway Reserve Trust).

The category winners were: Overall Excellence Award: Lindis Pass Conservation Group Public Land: Lindis Pass Conservation Group and the Summit Road Society (joint winners) Private Land: Dick Tripp (Governors Bay Landcare group) Individual: Grant Bowden (Ernle Clark reserve restoration group) Highly Commended: Alice Shanks, Annelies Pekalharing, Denis Blomquist, Ernle Clark reserve restoration group, Graham Nairn and Lindsay Hamilton (Tramway Reserve Trust) Weedbusters is a weeds awareness and education programme that aims to protect New Zealand’s environment from the increasing weed problem. The Weedbusters programme celebrates the efforts of community groups, individual and organisations, and aims to encourage people to help stop the spread of weeds.

Gold, silver and bronze for futsal players MAINLAND Futsal have brought back a gold, silver and bronze medal after an excellent showing at the Youth Championships in Wellington last week. A total of 50 boys across six teams competed in an under 10 and under 12 festival and the

under 14, under 16 and under 19 National Championships. Futsal is a variant of football played on a smaller pitch. The under 19 players earned their gold medal after sweeping through pool play undefeated and beating Capital 3-0 in the final. Mainland’s

Sam Mitchell was also awarded a golden boot and his brother Hamish a golden glove for the tournament. In the under 14 competition, Mainland took two teams with one of those, Canterbury Red, going through undefeated to the final, where they only lost 6-5 in extra time. The Under 16 team was unbeaten until the last round of pool play when a very tight playing schedule and injuries took their toll. After qualifying for a semi-final berth in second place they lost to the eventual winners, Central. In a New Zealand first, the under 10 and under

12 sides played games and also participated in skills challenges to create an atmosphere that was not about winning at all costs. It also allowed players to improve individually and as a team in an environment supported by Futsal Whites and coaching staff. Mainland Futsal development manager Richard Bell said the results were fantastic and the fact the under 19s had triumphed over the best players was positive for the future. “Futsal is a fantastic development tool for football as well as being a great game in its own right, so it bodes very well for all the groups.”

Fencers medal haul exceeds expectations

We will have you covered from head to toe, cosy and warm, without the bulk!

TALENT and hard work have earned two young Christchurch fencers gold and silver medals at the recent Australian National Championship in Sydney. Avonhead resident Wailing Chan, 15, won gold in the Under 15 Women’s Epee and silver in the Cadet (under 17) Women’s Epee. Spreydon resident Sheldon Ogilvie, 14, won silver in the Under 15 Men’s Epee. The pair were among 13 New Zealand fencers, including four others from Christchurch, to attend the event. Fencers from places such as Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong also competed. The fencers were coached by Wailing’s father David Chan, who represented Hong Kong in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul and later coached the Hong Kong team. Mr Chan said the fencers had exceeded his expectations. “They fenced very well and most importantly they worked hard to train to prepare for this competition.” Sheldon especially had been particularly dedicated, training four times a week including twice in the mornings before school. It was a great example to other students that “if they want to achieve something they should work hard”. Wailing, who has been fencing since she was nine, said she was very happy with the results. It was her fourth time competing in the Australian National Championship.

Kia Picanto manual

25

by Bob Nettleton

In five-speed manual form, Kia’s second generation Picanto is a stop-start affair that will actually make owners happy because it saves them money at the petrol pump. This model makes the most emphatic clean, green and economical statement of any version of the Picanto by using Kia’s Eco Dynamics, featuring fuel-saving intelligent stop go (ISG) technology. This wrings every last kilometre out of each litre of petrol by shutting down the motor when it’s idling and wasting fuel, then fires it up the instant the driver engages the clutch. Kia claim its ISG technology helps this mini fivedoor hatch sip through a mere 4.3 litres of fuel for every 100km of open road driving. It also scores one for the environment, emitting just 100g of carbon every kilometre - enough to make many of the so-called eco green car brigade see red! Kia believes the Picanto’s low fuel economy low vehicle emission combo matches most similar sized petrol/hybrids. It also goes close to bettering the super frugal diesels in this market segment that cost more to buy, and there is the added expense of road user charges. This king of thrift is the solitary five-speed manual offering in the Picanto lineup and surprisingly affordable at $18,590. The asking price includes a five-year/100,000km warranty programme and 24-hour roadside assistance. The 1.2 litre four-cylinder unit is from Kia’s latest Kappa engine family and a worthy addition with 64kw at 6000rpm and 123Nm of torque at 4000rpm. This a huge improvement on the meek and mild 48kw delivered by the 1.1 litre motor used in the previous model. Performance is punchy enough to scamper from 0-100km/h in 11 seconds, proving it’s a fuel miser that also fires a few performance shots as well. On the downside, the engine gets a bit frenetic and noisy when pushed through the pain barrier and on to its 6500rpm redline. If you want this motor to serve up a few tasty performance morsels, it needs to be stirred with a bit of Chef Ramsay passion and fire. This is not as difficult as it sounds with a light yet accurate five-speed manual gearbox that makes the job an absolute pleasure. The driving fun factor in the Picanto increases four-fold with a manual transmission on the job and makes the four-speed automatic model I drove at the start of this year seem decidedly sluggish. While it adds some real bubble and froth to the performance equation, the five-speed manual will be easily outsold by the automatic. The fact is this is a city car and buyers want the largely stress-free gear changing life that an automatic brings to their motoring world. This Picanto is larger than its predecessor. The wheelbase measures up nicely with a 60mm extension that provides a lot more extra legroom for the driver and front seat passenger. Owners will also appreciate the nearly 30 per cent increase boot capacity over the old model, with 200 litres of load area available to carry the weekly grocery shop or trip to the local garden centre. It may be a mini size car, but it has all the safety features of a much larger one including ESC (electronic stability control), traction control, ABS braking, brake assist along with electronic braking distribution. Six airbags are standard across all models except the premium EX version which scores seven with a knee bolster airbag. One bit of safety technology not normally associated with a car of this size is a hill-start assist control system. It stops the car

rolling back for a couple of seconds on slopes after the driver removes their foot off the brake pedal. With its neat modern lines, the Picanto has enough of the fashion smarts to stand out from the mini hatch crowd. The signature Kia tiger nose grill used across the company’s entire passenger vehicle range does not blend that naturally with the pint-sized frame of the Picanto and seems overly large in proportion to the rest of the car. A MacPherson Strut front end and torsion beam rear axle combine to provide a smooth and relatively bump-free ride that is a cut above what you typically get at this end of the car food chain. Handling is neat and compact but light on thrills, then again there no spills either as it eases through the corners using the plentiful grip from the smallish tyres. For a taller than average mini hatch, body roll is kept on a short lead where it has little opportunity to ruffle the car’s handling feathers unless the driver is really pressing hard Money saving: Kia’s second-generation Picanto fits nicely in your budget with its fuel-saving intelligent through the corners. stop go technology, roomy space and surprisingly affordable price.

Patient files on street EXCLUSIVE Samantha Early

Urgent investigation launched

HEALTH services are investigating after a large pile of documents, including about 50 patients’ sensitive information, was found on a suburban Christchurch street. The damp papers were discovered about 2pm on Saturday, July 14 near the footpath on Winchester Street, Merivale by a member of the public, who passed them on to Mainland Press and CTV News. It included printouts of staff memos from Health Care NZ, medical manuals, textbooks and about 50 client data sheets of Christchurch patients. The data sheets included names, phone numbers and addresses of mostly elderly clients, along with details of their medical conditions, the drugs they were taking and instructions for getting into their homes. Some examples were the name and address of an 80-year-old man noting his back door was usually open and the medicines he was allergic to; where to find the key to the home of a 79-year-old woman with dementia and what time she usually left the house; details of some patients’ alcoholism and a prescription for a woman’s methadone. Contained in the pile of documents was a memo to nurses urging caution with client file handling. When Mainland Press and CTV contacted the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) on Monday morning it was the first they or Health Care NZ had heard of the privacy breach. Health Care NZ has been contracted to the health Were you affected? board for more than a decade, providing community Patients or their family members nursing services and home-based support. affected by this privacy breach are CDHB general manager of planning and funding welcome to contact us. Carolyn Gullery said both organisations were Email samantha@mainlandpress.co.nz distressed by the find, it was unacceptable for the or phone 03 982 9303. files to be found in public and they had launched an urgent investigation. “We’re not aware of anything like this actually Sensitive and confidential: This large pile of documents, including patient names, addresses having happened before; we have no record of them and personal medical details, was found sodden on a Christchurch street last weekend. Patient files are stored and maintained electronically but nurses can access them remotely to print off before they make their rounds – missing printouts of files would not be noticed by management unless they were reported by the nurse concerned. Health Care NZ executive director Peter Hausmann said they had a range of processes around the confidentiality of client information and security. “It’s highly distressing for the clients we’re looking after for it to be out there in any form.” He said the company looked after 18,000 people a day throughout New Zealand. “The whole organisation and especially the Christchurch team will be distressed that any information is in the public arena…there’s been a failure and we’ll have to take full accountability of that, investigate why it occurred, contact the clients and certainly apologise,” Mr Hausmann said. Health Care NZ’s general manager of community services Scott Arrol flew from Auckland to head the investigation, which in its early stages revealed the papers, along with a wallet, stereo and GPS equipment, were stolen from a staff member’s car. They did not believe the information had been compromised but said it was critical to inform affected clients. He said they were offering to organise and pay for them to change their security arrangements where necessary. They had also informed police of the theft. Mr Arrol said they still wanted to verify facts like when the material was stolen and why it was not reported sooner. The most recent memo in the files was dated June 20. Mainland Press returned the files to Health Care NZ on Monday and decided not to contact the individual patients or their families.

Rising from the ashes: Baz Hailes has found it impossible to secure affordable retail space after his New Brighton premises were gutted by an arson attack.

Creative solution to commercial rental crisis

SPIRALLING commercial rental rates of over $4000 per week have forced Baz Hailes to set up an open air shop after his New Brighton store was destroyed in an arson attack seven weeks ago. Post-earthquake rent hikes had seen Mr Hailes lose nine of his 12 Canterbury Charity Barn stores which sell low-priced recycled goods. He was shocked by the cost of commercial rentals during his five-week search for replacement premises. “I looked at warehouses in Gasson Street and Brougham Street that were from $2000 to $4000 per week, which is much more than a business like mine can afford. “Everything I saw was completely out of my reach.” Mr Hailes settled for a “less than ideal” 2000 square metre section on the corner of

Ferry and Ensors roads for just over $500 per week which he had transformed into an open air market. “We were forced to set up here in this empty space because it was all we could afford. “It’s down to survival mode when rents get this high for businesses like mine who don’t generate a high turnover.” Mr Hailes had installed six glasshouses to protect his goods from the elements. “It’s not perfect and with all the rain things have been getting wet but it’s the best we can do for now. “This is what a lot of small businesses will be reduced to with rents getting out of control.” However, Mr Hailes believed landlords couldn’t be blamed for the skyrocketing rents.

“I don’t blame them. It’s the whole situation and with insurance rates going up the landlords have no choice but to put the prices up.” Meanwhile, Mr Hailes said the earthquakes had led to an upsurge of “needy people” visiting his stores to buy basic necessities. “There are so many people out there who are in real need. “That’s why we don’t have prices on our goods and instead people just offer us what they can afford to pay.” Mr Hailes said the increased level of need had prompted him to support the local community instead of helping overseas charities. “I used to send money overseas to help feed hungry children but after the earthquakes I decided to focus on helping people here.”

Born to try: Cashmere High School student Charlotte Holdaway sung Delta Goodrem’s Born to Try. Judges said they loved her passion and energy.

Powerful: Middleton Grange School student Tiffin Roberts, 14, kicked off Thursday’s heats with a strong rendition of Bonnie Tyler’s Holding out for a Hero. Judges Courtenay Washington and Allie Rossiter said Tiffin was oozing with confidence. Tiffin was runner up in the heat.

Winner: Lincoln High School student Dearna Doglione, 15, took out first place in the heat with her original song about an imaginary boyfriend. The audience appeared to love the song with its country feel, and Dearna had them clapping along. The judges said Dearna sung with incredible power and she had amazing control over her voice and rhythm.

Pretty in Pink: West Coaster Lucy Blanchfield, who was in Christchurch for a dance competition, had a last minute call up to participate in the Five Minutes of Fame competition. She impressed judges with her flexibility and ability to tell a story through dance.

Natural: Roydvale Primary School student Lucy Webster, 9, was labelled “absolutely delicious” by judges after she performed Mean by Taylor Swift. “It looked really natural, it didn’t look forced. I think you’re really yummy,” the judges said.

Rangiora buildings to come down THE Lambert and Rangiora Digital Print buildings on Rangiora’s High Street, which were closed in February following an engineering assessment, will be demolished this month. Salvageable items will be removed by the demolition team prior to the dismantling of the buildings so materials can be recycled instead of being dumped. The Waimakariri District Council’s environmental services general inspector, Greig Wilson, said the six containers placed outside the Lambert Building following its closure would

remain outside the buildings until the site was cleared and the footpath was made safe for public use again. “We’re hopeful this will occur in early August and the owners of these buildings are currently considering the future options available to them.” Mr Wilson said the Kaiapoi Gray Raven Scout building on Davie Street had also closed following an initial inspection. “The building has suffered earthquake damage that we believe has impacted its structural integrity and we have decided it is advisable to close it.”

Rangi Ruru undergoes revolution Tania Butterfield ALL but three buildings at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School will be demolished and rebuilt as part of a plan to revolutionise the school to 21st century teaching standards. Principal Julie Moor said after the February earthquake a large number of buildings were removed and others were uneconomic to repair. So the school decided to spend in excess of $30 million over the next three to four years to rebuild the school from scratch. “We’re pretty much tearing everything down and starting again. It’s a wonderful opportunity,” Ms Moor said. The revolution was still in its planning stage but stage one, which includes a new information centre, student services building, science, mathematics, visual arts and languages classrooms, was expected to begin later this year and be completed within 18 months, she said. Te Koraha, the church and the boarding house are the only three original buildings to remain. “The really exciting part is it’s a school that’s being designed for children and designed for the way we want to do our

teaching and learning and the way we know is best for the 21st century,” Ms Moor said. “We’re moving out from the traditional classroom and traditional schools and realising teaching has changed.” Students were not expected to be affected very much by the construction of the new school. “We have been a building site for the last 18 months so anything in the future isn’t going to be as intrusive as February 22,” Ms

Moor said. “We’re very fortunate our site is very large and quite a lot of classes are being held in relocatable buildings. Most of the relocatables were specially built for us by Placemakers and they’re fantastic teaching spaces.” Money for the new buildings is largely coming from the insurance payout and “other sources”, Ms Moor said. “We’re not putting fees up to pay for it.”

learning the Chinese martial art. “It’s part of the Chinese tradition and I didn’t want my sons to lose that. I didn’t want our children and our friends’ children sitting in front of the TV or computer. Kung fu is very good for the children’s health,” she said. She searched for a kung fu instructor in Christchurch, but could not find one to suit her sons. “Finally, one of my sons said ‘That’s it, I want Alex [Zhao (no relation)]’, so we asked him to come, applied for a working visa for him and he came.” Mr Zhao, 26, began training in kung fu when he was six years old. At aged nine, he was invited to join China’s top martial arts school – Henan Songshan Shaolin Temple Tagou Martial Arts School. In 2003 he became a qualified martial arts coach and in 2006 he became the head coach at the school’s Shanghai branch where he met Kevin and Patrick Zhao. “My sons were his first students,” Mrs Zhao said. kung fu with the Guoshu Fanghua Martial Arts School operating out of Westburn School. He said he came to New Zealand because he wanted to try a new and very different life. However, the move hasn’t been easy, with him leaving a wife and daughter behind and only just starting to learn English this year. His working visa is for three years but if his family is able to move over, he would like to stay longer, Mr Zhao said. “New Zealand people are very friendly and New Zealand environment is very pretty. The life here is more peaceful than in Shanghai,” he said. Mr Zhao took children for free classes during KidsFest last week.

Artists capture Christchurch heart Tania Butterfield A RICCARTON art gallery is giving Cantabrians the opportunity to reminisce about the Christchurch that was in a new exhibition starting today. Bryce Gallery owner Denise Bryce said she began working with artists on the exhibition in March following the success of Denis Robinson’s commemorative book Christchurch - An artists’ tribute. The majority of pieces showcased were specially created for the exhibition. Among those previously exhibited is a piece quilter Sue Spigel and painter Galina Kim produced for the 125th anniversary of the ChristChurch Cathedral in 2006. “It has been bought but the owners have graciously loaned it to us for the exhibition. They had a big exhibition at the cathedral and it was one of the pieces there,” Ms Bryce said.

Artist Robert McDowell, whose grandson Jamie Robert McDowell Gilbert was killed in the February quake, has produced a series entitled “Garden City Scenes” to reflect Christchurch’s reputation as a floral city. One of the most poignant pieces is likely to be of St Elmo’s Court which was painted as the building was being demolished. “The majority of works are of old Christchurch as we knew and loved it but there are a couple of pieces of Christchurch as we see it now or as we saw it in the devastation. “St Elmo’s Court was painted as it was being demolished so it reflects it part standing and part demolished,” Ms Bryce said. Other areas depicted in the exhibition include the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Canterbury Provincial Chambers, the Arts Centre and Colombo Street among others. Those no longer living in Christchurch or who cannot make it to the exhibition can view it online at www.brycegallery.co.nz.
