Interview

J More Music with a message

My music is meant to Motivate, Uplift and encourage all on a positive level

J

More born Edmore Jakachira is Hip Hop artist from Harare, Zimbabwe. What makes his music special is the approach he takes on his art. Listening to his music, one can easily tell from the lyric construction how he has taken his time to write about things which affect us day in day out. In other songs he takes subliminal shots at the gatekeepers of Zimbabwean music whilst trying to address the state of the entertainment industry. You can classify him as a gospel musician or as a motivational singer but all in all his music has something special to gain from it. We had the opportunity to interview him and find out more . This is how the interview went.

J More where did the name originate from? The name J More comes from my actual name which is Edmore Jakachira. J coming from my surname and More from the last four letters of my name. Back then i used to call myself with different names then arrived on J More. As i grew older i wanted a more professional sense to my name attached to really who i am as a person. Tell us a bit about your journey into music, how it all came about and what you seek to achieve? Just like any musician out there, the journey started way back then, as early as primary school i was in the percusion band on the drums. Then as time went on, i was more involved in the drama club all arts related. At secondary school i was part of the choir. As i speak about my journey i can say music was something inside from wayback. I can say i hung around artists in high school mainly hip hop artists. Back then we did not have much of technolo-

gy as far as cellphones are concerned. We huddled up in groups and used school desks to make beats to rap on. In form 6 i met theses guys who did hip hop music on a different level than us. They had a big influence on me. In university is when i recorded my first official professionally done song titled Dzimba avamabwe. Back in 2015 or 2016 it was more of a political project party influenced by my Science and Political studies back then. It was then in university where i beagn to see the appreciation for my art. My influence in deep lyrics came from popular artists like Kendrick Lamar and the likes. Mwari Pindirai was my second track. How is it balancing between family, work and music. Is music a full time thing to you? Music to me is more of an all time thing than a full time thing, hoping people will understand what am saying. At any given time or moment as the opportunity arises i do it. ofcourse i do balance between work and family. With family or not around them i can write a song. I

Subliminal shots worth the time and money.. The interview with J More reveals a lot.

tend to juggle between music and family well. I manage my time. How many albums do you have now, can you say it gets better with time as far as challenges to release your music are concerned? I have 3 EP’s to date. 2017 i released my first song titled Wenera, i had a few more singles i released which i then compiled to make an EP titled Ressurecting Real Rap KJV. It formed the base for music with a message. Then i was working on building Hopeville Records simply meaning music that restores hope. That Ep contained songs like Jobho Muranda which hit good on local radio stations. My second EP was titled Music with a message with 3 songs. It became better with time judging from the responses i got. Are you married, would you marry an artist, seeing the rate of divorce, what can you say is a good recipe for a lasting marriage? I’m not married, but i would personally marry an artist as much as any other person. If you love them then its fine. It would be awesome if the one i marry is an artist considering that they understand the life of an artist. Looking at the rate of divorce i think people really need to think and decide what they want and who they want in their lives and always remember the next person is also human. Its a matter of submission

and compromise. Are you a perfoming artist, where and when, which show had the greatest impact in your musical career that you took part in so far? No and Yes, i haven’t perfomed on any major platform so its a No but a Yes in terms of who i see myself as. We loved your track Chauya Chibaba, what inspired you to write that track? what is greatest inspiration when writing tracks? Chauya Chibaba had mixed thoughts in it. It follows in the line of most my songs where i tackle multi dimensional issues affecting through lyrics. In such lyrics you will see i am directing messages to different

people but its all real and true. I am inspired by things that happen daily to us and mainly to me. In Africa and beyond who would you like to collaborate with and why? I would say J Cole, he has been an inspiration to my music, i am always reminded how music can be used to encourage, uplift and motivate positivity. Are you signed to any record labels, whats your take on it? I am not signed to any record label, i do my music from a personal capacity assisted by my manager Mr Tashinga Chikanda based in S.A. I am working on my record label Hopeville Records. In as far as signing artists, in Zimbabwe i havent seen any established record label that can bring an artist to stardom, so i am sceptical about it all. Rather sign a deal for a project not to be signed to a stable. Whats next for J More after Chauya Chibaba, album mixtape single? After Chauya Chibaba there came the remix to that song. As of now i have intentions of dropping a gospel rap E.P later on this year 2022. It may either come as singles or the E.P nonetheless expect new musisc coming soon.

MARITAWANA She Never Dissapoints

THE INTERVIEW We are more than excited and expectant of the new single from you Maritawana. How did the song come about, what inspired its existence? The song Killing Me is based on long distance relationships. Now am sure many people would assume from the title that its something personal. Was i in a long distance relationship, maybe. Am i in one, maybe. But the song is all about a woman in a long relationship, and its killing her not literally but emotional making her feel like she wanna see her lover but the distance is just tearing her apart. The song is also saying you should’nt allow the opinions of others about long distance relationships stop you from being with the one you love. You will eventually meet up and you will be together. People have a negative perception about long distance relationships. In Zimbabwe there aren’t that many songs which address

this. The song also stems from personal experince. You are a person of many talents, and singing has proved to be one of them, is this your first? Yes this my first published single, i do have another unpublished song and another i featured on. This one is my first commercial track. When can we expect visuals for the song? You can expect the visuals before the end of May. it supposed to come out as a surprise, i’m not going to get much into teh details all i can say is it will be the end of May. We are going to review the song, but for those who havent heard it, where can they expect to find it? How can one get it touch with you or your management say for

shows, etc? You can find it on Spotify, Deezer, Tidal and many more. The song was released on my birthday April 27th. To book Maritawana one can email maritawanabookings@gmail.com Have you ever thought of taking up a career in music, investing in albums, etc? I have always thought of taking it up. Litte story behind it is, i was in the choir at primary school. In secondary school i dropped out of the choir, i did not like the songs they were singing. The funny thing is i participated in the drama club and the school plays. People loved it, commended my acting and ecnouraged me. I realised then i wanted to do acting hence i ended up in AFDA. But then i realised i still have a talent for singing. When i got back to

Zimbabwe, I joined Harare Youth Choir and i was there for a long time. I then had to leave for other personal committments. People would come to me and say you should sing. Encouragement from all over. So yah i have thought about it and i am doing it now. Talking about investing in your talent, can you say such investments are worth it considering how big our industry is, Can you tell us a rough figure, how much it cost to make such a beautiful song? Is our local music industry big is a question i always ask myself. Internationally yes but locally its a bit tricky. I am yet to see how much it pays me just from going to shows and perfoming, and if Zimbabweans will like my music. I am still discovering myself as a musician, even with this

song, i am yet to see where best i fit in terms of genre, how it works and how i can make money out of it. It also depends on the economy and the people you work with, all this will determine the return on your investment. As for a rough figure, from pre-production up to the final publishing i can say about 530 US dollars. I’ll tell you am proud because i have never spent so much money like that on myself, money that i have worked for on myself. I feel the track deserved that much of monetary attention. At the end of the day i believe the song would takae me places. We also seeing you in Tangled a telenovela showing on 3Ktv and Dstv, what role do you play there? I play Nyasha, a maid who in the film catches her boss Zviko having an affair with her husband’s nephew inturn blackmailing her. Zviko her boss tries to get Nyasha fired to protect her secret. Acting is something you have been fond of, how did you land such a role. Can your credit some of your posts on youtube as part of the reason for getting the role? I landed the role mainly through connections, some of the people on the producion liked the fact that i went to AFDA, South African school of Motion Picture, Medium and Live Perfomance which is like the best Film school in the whole of southern Africa. I was qualified for it which basically landed me the role. So qualifications do pay at the end of the day. On my Youtube channel i posted content from the show i used to do called the Relatebles, which we used to talk about social issues like child marriages, premarital sex, polygammy, etc. It was like an unfiltered show. I also joined the African Diaspora News channel founded by a black american who visited the country and desided to do a news channel.

There is this mystery around the value of acting a role in a film, The industry being a lucrative one, are you free to say hw much such a role is worth? just an idea ? Is it lucrative? Thats the question in Zimbabwe. To me its still a community not an industry, i feel if we do not get financial support from the government it is not an industry. You churn out a lot of confidence during acting, is there a routine you do which prepares you for the camera? The unfortunate thing is the things i learnt at school i have tried to apply them in the productions i have been in, the people in production do not really help you prepare, you’d have to them on your own, sometimes you won’t have the time because of production schedules. The confidence was always there even before i went to school in South Africa. The routine i usually do is distance myself from the casting crew, to go over my lines and meditate and do breathing exercises if i feel nervous but because its screen i never feel nervous, if it was theatre or stage acting then i would do those kind of exercises, infact with theatre thats when the exercises are done as a group. With screen there is nothing like that, actors can do it on their own. I dont usually use a routine when it comes to screen but for stage acting, where i do focus exercises with others.
