INTRO
HI, I’M
makayla I specialize in crafting strategic brand identities and digital marketing. I love diving deep into what makes a brand tick and figuring out how to visually communicate a brands’ vision to their target audience. I have always had an itch to create since I was a kid, but was persuaded that pursuing a career in the arts was not a good career move. When I found myself sitting in a cubicle reviewing data, I knew I made the wrong choice and decided to take a leap and follow my true passion - design. My design career began at the Academy of Art in San Francisco where I received my Masters in Graphic Design and Digital Media. From there I interned with a fashion brand, American Threads, creating their emails, website graphics and a t-shirt line. Since then I have worked with a web-design studio, advertising agency and private clients. In the following pages you will see a variety of projects from branding, to email marketing, web design and social media design.

MIDLIFE DOULA
One of my favorite projects by far has been creating this brand identity for the Midlife Doula. My client Anna came to me with a very unique business idea - creating a brand for her new online education and support community focused on helping women in their mid-lives prepare for their “second act” in life. She wanted the brand to be funky and playful, something that would make a middle-aged woman feel young again. To accomplish this vibe I gravitated towards bright pops of color, soft shapes and a modern-serif typeface.

COPYWRITING COACH
The visual direction was the Good Witch meets an online copywriting coven with a mission to coach small business owners how to write their own engaging content with ease (and a sprinkle of magic). This brand was unlike anything I had worked on before and was so fun to explore and get to stretch my creativity. This project consisted of a fully-developed brand strategy, visual identity, social media templates and a website. My goal was to keep the visual direction professional with a hint of magic thrown into the mix. I incorporated a mix of dark colors paired with lighter hues to soften the overall feel of the brand. Delicate illustrations and modern calligraphy added a sense of whimsy and enchantment, while the serif typeface embodied a more professional and timeless look.

AMERICAN THREADS
My first internship out of design school was with the boutique fashion company, American Threads in Irvine, California. What I loved most about this experience was the variety of projects and mediums I got to work on. From website graphics to daily email creation and designing a new line of graphic tees, I was fully immersed in the day-to-day life of a graphic designer for a fashion brand. The following pages show a few examples of various web, email and shirt designs I completed during my internship.

PAVE CREATIVE
An opportunity to rebrand a music studio with a mission to foster a love of creativity in children - how could I pass that up? My client Ariana was ready for the next step in her business, growing her brand. In the height of the pandemic she was struggling to find students and new the only way to attract new clients was to really stand out in the crowd. We dug deep into the why of her brand to craft a stand-out, creative experience any kid would want to be a part of. Bold colors, playful imagery and custom iconography helped Pave Creative grow over 300% in the middle of the pandemic.

ROLLING TIN CAFE
Rolling Tin Cafe came to me with an established brand, but a website that looked like a completely different business. Although my client Anissa had a visual identity, she was not sure how to implement it throughout her brand touchpoints. Using her current brand guidelines I designed her website to not only tie into her visual identity, but also to provide her with a visual representation that she could then use to craft the rest of her brand touchpoints.

Alex was having difficulty finding the right type of clients she wanted to work with. She knew she wanted to work with small businesses, yet kept getting for family portrait sessions. I knew she wasn’t speaking to the right people, so we dug deep and did a full 180 degrees on her brand - including changing her business’ name. Wabi sabi a Japanese view of appreciating things that are imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. Alex wanted to speak to those scrappy, growing small business owners that are imperfectly perfect (because, aren’t we all?). I took this principle and created a simple visual identity inspired by high-fashion brands like MaxMara, Helmut Lang and Calvin Klein to evoked a sense of quality and imperfection.
