We are so excited you are here! Get ready to own your cycle and know how to integrate it into the rest of your life. You should not be afraid or embarrassed by your natural body functions— you should own them! They make you the wonderful, creative and vibrant lady you are! You will find that this planner not only teaches you about menstruation, but it gives you the tools to work it into your daily life schedule alongside school, hanging with friends and sports practice. So go on, turn the page, and take control of you!


A period calendar is a great way to make sure PMS or your period don’t take you by surprise. This doesn’t mean you have to bust out the paper calendar and actually mark the day — more on that later, though. Charting gives you more control over your reproductive health and helps you understand your own body rhythms. What To Track Keeping track of your period symptoms on a monthly cycle calendar is easy, but it’s one of those things that won’t work unless you do it regularly. On top of noting when you start and stop your period, try writing down when you get cramps, mood changes, changes in your vaginal discharge, pain when you don’t expect it, or other symptoms you think might be period-related. After a few cycles, you’ll likely see, a pattern. Then you can even foresee symptoms and be ready for them. PMS coming up? Stash some medicine in your purse. Period due? Stock up on pads so you aren’t caught without one when you need it most! If you’ve been having periods for a while, you know what your normal flow is. Keep track of light or heavy bleeding and any changes in color and texture (like blood

clots). Also note any unusual vaginal secretions that occur during the month. You may notice a thicker discharge at mid-cycle—this is normal and means you’re ovulating.

Why It’s Important Regularly recording everything about your cycle, even if it feels weird, can give your doctor important information. Next time you visit your doctor, he or she will probably ask you the date of your last period. If you track your periods, the answer will be really easy! And that’s not the only thing your doctor will find helpful to know.

What is a period?

Does having your period smell?

Simply put: A period is when a woman’s body releases tissue it no longer needs. This tissue comes from the uterus, which is where a baby (fetus) can develop in the female body. Every month or so, the uterus lining gets thicker to prepare for a fertilized egg if the woman becomes pregnant. If the egg doesn’t get fertilized, that lining is released from the body as blood through the vagina. This monthly process is called menstruation or a period. It is a natural, normal body process for all females as they become women and mature physically.

It shouldn’t! Menstrual odor happens when menstrual fluid comes in contact with air. When menstrual fluid is absorbed within the vagina, like through a tampon, it is not exposed to the air, so there shouldn’t be an odor. If you’re feeling worried, just be sure to change your pads and tampons frequently to help keep odor at bay.

What does a period feel like? The actual flow of your period doesn’t feel like much when it’s happening. Chances are, you won’t even feel it. When you actually start your period, you may feel some dampness in your private area — this may be caused by a few spots of blood on your underwear.

Does having your period hurt? Menstruation itself doesn’t hurt, but some girls and women get cramps or other symptoms during their periods that may be uncomfortable. This is typically due to the hormones your body releases during menstruation that cause the uterus to contract so it can shed it’s lining.

How much blood do I lose during my period? Most girls lose about 1/4 cup of menstrual fluid during their periods (mostly in the first few days). Not to worry, though—your body makes up for it.

EXERCISE

Your ovaries release an egg in the middle of this phase to be fertilized (meaning when sperm gets to the egg, aka getting pregnant). Testosterone horomones are very high in your body during this time, so it’s normal to experience urges.

Your energy levels are very high still in this phase, so burn it! Go for a run, cycling class, or zumba!

Your uterus lining is thickening during the first part of this phase, preparing for a fertilized egg (when you become pregnant). Your horomones are flaring during this stage and this is where PMS symptoms usually appear.

HOW TO TELL YOUR MOM Talking about puberty is a great time for you to bond and learn a lot about becoming a woman. It’s completely natural to be nervous about talking about your first period. It’s a pretty big deal, after all. Just know this: It’s really not so bad once you get the conversation started. If you just can’t seem to say something, use these three tips.

Keep it casual It could just be the idea of a big sit-down talk that’s intimidating. If that’s the case, try opening the conversation by saying something super casual like, “Mom, when you were younger, were you nervous about getting your period?” She’ll probably get the hint.

Write it down If it’s hard for you to start a discussion in person, leave your mom a note where only she’d find it (in one of her dresser drawers or her purse maybe). When she finds it, she’ll find the time to start a conversation with you (and you won’t have to worry about bringing it up).

Be direct Really though, you could just take the most direct approach and just tell her your feelings! Take a deep breath, walk up to her and say something like, “This is really embarrassing, but I need to talk to you about my first period.” She might be surprised, but your mom can get to the point right away — and she’ll probably do her best to make the conversation as painless as possible.

care products It’s really important to learn about and know your options when it comes to products to help you manage your period. The three listed here are the most popular amongst women. Try different things, and see what you like!

TAMPONS are made of soft cotton pressed together that can be easily inserted into the opening of the vagina where it absorbs your period blood. Tampons come in different sizes and can be found at many stores.


MENSTUAL CUPS are made of flexible silicone, so that they can be easily inserted and comfortable. They are reusable and hold period blood when inserted. This is a newer option for women, and more eco-friendly.

PADS are made of cotton and stick to the inside of your underwear. They are the most commonly used feminine product and can be found in pretty much any store.

What is

PMS stands for premenstrual syndrome – it’s the combination of symptoms that some women suffer from a week or so before their period. Symptoms appearbefore your period starts (as many as five days) and will disappear during your period. Symptoms can affect your body AND your brain, and their intensitycan vary a lot from girl to girl. (As if you don’t have enough to deal with.)


WHAT CAUSES PMS?

SYMPTOMS

The bad news is that no one really knows the exact reason. What doctors and scientists do know is that it’s related to the way your body’s hormones change through your monthly cycle.

Symptoms can include cramps, back aches, breast tenderness, skin problems, mild depression, headaches, bloating, angry outbursts.

HOW TO CURE WHO GETS PMS? About 75 percent of women get at least some form of PMS. So if you have PMS, one thing’s for sure—you’re not alone! Although not every girl gets them, PMS symptoms can actually last through your period, too.

There are lots of things you can do to curb PMS symptoms. Get exercise, lots of sleep (at least 8 hours a night, reduce stress, talk to your friends for support!
