In memory of Miss Pearl Every year I awaited confirmation. It began with an email, either from me or from her. “Are we going to VKL this January?” The effervescence of a NYC winter was the perfect aftermath for the placid summer in Uruguay (from 80 to 25 in a few hours!), and a family member was always willing to come. Miss Pearl was one of the most energetic people I have ever met. She was there the entire show, always with a smile and always calm, even with the booth full of people requiring her attention.

She was also a sound businesswoman who knew her customers perfectly well and had a deep understanding of the knitting industry. She put up with all my endless questions, but she always took a minute to think about them and was very candid with her answers. I learned more about the knitting world in a five-minute conversation with Miss Pearl than I did anywhere else. Late on Sunday night, with the show being over, she was the last to leave the booth after checking that everything was loaded into the van. We would always say goodbye talking about next year’s show, all the while knowing we will see each other again. This year will be different.

I will miss her.

You can see her reflected in her staff, a motley crew of experienced knitters, designers and students who were at all times willing to help, answer questions, and give away free patterns, but also had an embarrassing inclination for saying, “He is the owner of Malabrigo.”

We will all miss her.

You can see a part of her in Zach, too, invariably solving problems and always with a smile.

RSVP for Pearl Chin’s Celebration of Life on March 21st

AVE EEN TO?

Looking back upon everything malabrigo did in 2020 is nothing short of amazing! Despite all the challenges and struggles we all faced in 2020, it was truly an honor to be able to bring you a little bit of light and hope, in the form of yarn. We had lots of new things launch last year and overall we cannot wait to share the exciting things we have planned for 2021.

NEW WEBSITE 08 | 2020 Recap - New website

One of the biggest and most noticeable changes we made was a new website! If you haven’t checked it out yet, be sure to head over to https://malabrigoyarn.com and give it a look. It is much easier to navigate and full of all the information you need. Be sure to look at our blog where you can get to know the designers and designs that we feature every month in our Quickies program.

BOOK 18 Rios & Washted

Book 18 Rios and Washted is a collection of 14 patterns to pick from, all of which can be worked in Rios or Washted, two yarns you choose your favorite. From accessories to sweaters, there is definitely a project for everyone is the book. We like both yarns so much, we couldn’t pick just one. We hope we’ve tempted you to try the same pattern in both yarns to experience the differences yourself.

16 | 2020 Recap - Rasta Pintada

We created these wonderful colors after considerable research and experimentation. Our new technique, Pintada, amalgamates several of our dyeing methods to arrive to colorful effects. When knitting with Pintada, you will discover an amazing and unique color motif with speckles of bright beautiful shades. Some of these shades are linked to our classic Rasta palette, such as Sunset, Paris Night, Azul Profundo, Frank Ochre, Ravelry Red, Fiesta, so that you can easily combine them for your designs.

VERANO Speckled

The colors in this palette are on trend and a classic take on the popular Speckled phase that everyone seems to love. These speckles truly stand out though, and over an array of colors that appeal to everyone, with a bit more subtle flavor.

Manuel is the Warehouse Manager for the Miami warehouse. We are so thankful for all his hard work. Manuel is originally from Venezuela and his family moved to the USA when he was a small child. He oversees the packing of your yarn that ships from our US warehouse, so he’s a very important person! The Malabrigo Team is excited to bring this Behind the Scenes feature to our Newsletters so that we can start to foster an even closer relationship between the makers and our Team here at Malabrigo. We are looking forward to helping you get to know us better.

Manuel Prieto WAREHOUSE MANAGER

How long have you been working at malabrigo? I’ve been working at Malabrigo for about 3 years and a half.

What are your duties and responsibilities? To oversee day to day activities, ship out orders as well quality and inventory control.

What does a typical work day look like? A normal day of work for me consists mostly on passing on orders to my colleagues at the packing phase, overseeing how the orders are being packed, taking care of missing items that need to be found or adjusted and then shipping them out. Overseeing how the orders are being packed or if there are some yarn missing that need to be found or adjusted.

Which part of your job do you enjoy the most? I enjoy just coming in to work with the people that I’ve had the blessing of knowing through the years and the joy of a good day’s work with everything going smoothly throughout the day.

Which part of the job is a challenge for you? The most challenging part of my job is when containers arrive. Receiving the container is one thing, then we have to sort it out by the type of yarn and then restock each shelf that needs to be refilled with the yarn that came in as well as send out the pending orders.

What’s your favorite color and favorite yarn? My Favorite yarn would have to be Mecha either in Cereza #033 or Lotus #120. I feel like the tone that they use in Mecha is the most vibrant of all the ones we have. Do you knit or crochet? Sadly no, that art form is lost in me.

Manuel

had said yeah, since it was during our working hours and then they said thank you and hung up the phone. A few minutes later they call again saying that they were outside to buy some yarn. It was funny because we had never received customers at the warehouse before. I ended up calling the headquarters to ask what we should do

SOCK NEW COLLECTION PREVIEW Inspired by magical tales and child stories, we started to work on a new color development. When creating a collection, we usually start by testing quite a lot of colors to be able to choose and come down with a few of them. This time we liked them all so much that we decided to keep them all. These three colors are the exclusive preview of this collection and were launched specially for the upcoming TEMPERANCE KAL.

Rasta Studio came up as alternative to the exterior shots we always include in our books, due to the current situation. It was a difficult year for us all and we thought this was a nice way to finish it: with a book on Rasta, one of our most popular yarns, introducing several new colors
