- meet Jorge -
Meet Jorge How long have you been working at malabrigo? I started to work back in 2011, mid-2011 actually. It’s been a long time now. I started to work at the same time as Rafael and two other ladies. In the beginning it was just the four of us.
What are your duties and responsibilities? Mostly, I’m in charge of dyes. I check the inventory of how many kilos we have of each dye and also prepare the formula for the specific yarn quantity they are going to dye. Along with those activities, I organize the production regarding which colors to dye first and after…it’s like playing with colors and their qualities.
What does your typical work day look like? On a typical day, I arrive at the mill, look over which yarns we are going to work that day and which colors we will be dyeing. With the variegated yarns there is not much trouble because we don’t need to change the water every time. The solids and more neutral colors are the ones we do need to organize how we dye, light colors first and finish with the darker ones. This way we don’t have to waste so much water and we maintain the rhythm of production.
Which part of your job do you enjoy the most? What I like the most is that I can work peacefully, there is no one rushing me. I do have priorities and deadlines but I’m calm.
Which part of your job is a challenge for you? I get stressed when the production organization starts to fail. This usually happens when we accumulate small orders in yarns or shades that are not sold or produced much (2 or 3 kilos each). When this happens, we have to re-organize everything so that those small orders are added.

We plan mainly by color (because of the water like I mentioned before) and also avoid losing the rhythm of production that we do in a single day. When the dyers finish their batches they are always asking for more to continue dyeing and that’s when I get a little stressed too.
What’s your favorite color? And favorite yarn? Indiecita, Piedras and Candombe are my favorite colors. And my favorite yarn is Rasta.
Do you know how to knit or crochet? I don’t know how to knit, I’m too impatient. My mother knows how to knit and my girlfriend has learnt during the pandemic with YouTube and is always knitting shawls.
Could you tell us an anecdote from your work at malabrigo? I remember one time we were testing a color, Lettuce I think it was. I was preparing the dyes and the dyer came to tell me - Jorge, this color has come out, I believe it’s wrong. - No, but if the recipe is right -I would tell him-. Let me do it again. After a while he came back saying that it had gone wrong again. I started checking and after a while I realized that I had been putting one of the blue dyes incorrectly and that’s why it always came out wrong. But after that it was fine. I have been with Malabrigo since the beginning. The time during the pandemic was really hard for us. In my family, we lost my dad to Covid-19. We were all thankful to be able to continue working at the mill because many shops had closed and there was no subsidy applied in Peru for this situation. Working with Uruguayan people had it´s cultural challenges at first, but we have learned many things from each other and now we all work well together.
