RECYCLE/ SUSTAINABLE?
GREEN WITH ENVY Sustainable product design ecocycle and business balance system design
There are a lot of wasted banner materials after promotions use, like the recent east asian games. To design a whole system, not just a product, to reuse the banner materials in a truly sustainable way. With the cooperation of ecols, a local sustainable products retail shops and HKWWA, we were asked to also concern more on the ROI.
Project Duration // 7 weeks
2009 October
Group Project (3 in a group)
Project supported by ecols and HKWWA *Perspective Award 2010, Product Design (Students), Certificates of Excellence *Final Product was chosen for real production *Exhibited in Environment and Conservation Fund Summer is Cool Exhibition 2010
Brainstorming, directions identifying, ROI and system drafting We started brainstorming in different aspect by using mindmaps. Then we planned the business cycle on one of the directions by analysing the whole industry with mental model, list out the solution components and the benefits of different parties.
Interim presentation Direction confirmation on botanic design as banner materials can hold some water when sew together but since they are dirty, they are much more suitable to hold plants, especially for interior plants.
Supported research, target market research and ideas development
Idea finalization and Target user The final idea is a series of planting pots. Attracting different levels of audiences, the 4 sizes of pots target at office, restaurants and domestic usage respectively, that are office plants rental companies, landscape architecture agencies on primary level and stylish product fancier on the secondary level.
Mock up testing We had came across a long process on refining the design as we aimed at using no gluing on the whole production process. Great obstacles on the patternpiece calculations.
Finalized system design By using the mental model, we listed out the relationships between different stateholder, target user and the society.
GREEN WITH ENVY is a series of planting pots made by recycled banner materials. This folding method can strengthen the force taken from the material. The patternpieces are not very big and the ripples can hide the original graphics on the banners which can fully utilize the wasted materials and resulted in diversified colour and pattern combinations. Different patternpieces are joined together by sewing which can be 100% recycle.
The planter is dedicated to the HKWWA workers to create a greater social impact and better CSR. For domestic selling, each pot comes with a small mission statement and seeds to help start your first plant in the new planter
