Brunch This term I have hosted Brunch for over 90 pupils from across all the year groups who have gone the extra mile in the attitude with which they have approached life, demonstrating the Malvernian Qualities in all areas of the school: academically, in the co-curricular or super-curricular or within their House. These have included

• Email content of emails sent / received by Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook and Mail.Ru. It should be noted that no-one watches or looks at the raw data being generated. Instead we rely on automatic searches based on keywords to generate searches for pupil welfare and our system looks for key words such as “suicide”, ‘bullying” etc. The capturing of this data, both search queries and social media, can only take place when the pupils are using the College network, when they go home, or go onto 3G or 4G then we have no ability to capture this data.

MALVERN TIMES Rewards and Sanctions Update The ‘Sanctions and Rewards Working Group’, led by Lewis Faulkner, Deputy Head: Pastoral, has met with the School Council, Chapel Prefects, Heads of Houses and colleagues for feedback. They have studied the data and are reviewing the current systems. Conclusions so far are that there should be a greater emphasis on pupil reflection as well as clearer escalation and greater consistency

3 Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet As part of her role in CCF, Esther Woods, is acting as one of the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadets. This is recognised as one of the highest honours a cadet can achieve and recently Esther supported the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire at HRH The Princess Royal’s visit to Kimala (a local medical equipment manufacturer).

when sanctions are deemed appropriate. The aim is to continue the Working Group and departmental trials this year before rolling out changes more widely from September 2020.

Sunday Activities To complement the House trips and other school activities organised on a Sunday, Liam Smith, Activity Co-ordinator, centrally organises Sunday trips and recently pupils have enjoyed trips to Alton Towers and trampolining in Bristol. Trips for the Lent Term will include Xscape, Milton Keynes, which will include indoor skydiving, virtual reality experiences and ten pin bowling, as well as a trip to Drayton Manor theme park. Pupils are notified of these trips via their House notices and are encouraged to sign up in advance.

to symphonic wind band Christmas music, so something for everyone. We were also treated to House 2 and House 8 reprising their excellent singing from the House Singing competition earlier on in the term. A rousing audience rendition of Hark the Herald accompanied by the Concert Band brought the concert to a fittingly festive close.

Town Carols The Chapel and Chamber Choirs were in extremely good voice for Town Carols on Wednesday 11th December. With carols ranging from arrangements of traditional carols through to the contemporary composer Eric Whitacre, there was some wonderful singing, whilst the readers spoke with great poise and clarity. The Brass Ensemble accompanied the hymn singing with aplomb and it was a real treat to hear the descants soaring above the hymn singing of the congregation. A perfect way to kick off the Christmas festivities.

MALVERN TIMES Christmas Unplugged

5 In Photography: Full Colours: Charlie Canton-Smith, Mouse Broughton,

This year’s Christmas Unplugged did a fantastic job of putting the college in celebratory mood, featuring some of our most talented musicians in an eclectic mix of popular music. From Guns N’ Roses to Billie Eilish, the appreciative audience were treated to some highly individual and accomplished performances. Several of the songs were very cleverly arranged, with stylish instrumental contributions. The event was live-streamed across the school, entertaining the lower school pupils and providing much-needed motivation for their packing!

The Malvernian Society I also want to update you on The Malvernian Society and the significant role they undertake at Malvern College both within the school life… and well beyond!

Creative Arts Colours

The Malvernian Society was established in 1895 as the alumni association for former pupils of Malvern College. More recently,

the Society has also begun to engage with parents. The Society aims to promote life-long relationships between the College and the wider Malvernian community and to support the advancement of Malvern College. In particular, it seeks to: • enable Old Malvernians to keep in touch with one another and the College, and to promote the activities of the affiliated members clubs; • enable OMs and current pupils to benefit from a structured programme of careers advice, work experience and professional networking; • keep parents engaged with the school, during and after their child’s time at Malvern; • maintain a portfolio of traditional and digital communications

for the benefit of the Malvernian community; • undertake fundraising activities in support of the strategic vision for the advancement of the College.

OM Connect One key recent initiative is closer liaison with the College careers staff, who now have access to OM Connect, which holds details of thousands of OMs and parents across a range of professions who have volunteered to offer professional advice, whether a pupil need help writing a CV, or is looking for a work placement. OMs in aviation, law, media, international relations, medical science, finance, sustainable development and the military, to name but a few, can help. Perhaps you too might help?
