Tech Tip: Hot Social Media Trends
By Kevin McNulty Netweave Social Networking | Manatee Chamber Technology Committee MemberOne of the hottest trends in social media for 2023 will be the continued rise of short-form video content, but the definition of short is a moving target. Back in the days of Vine, short was only six seconds. Instagram then took it to 15 seconds, then TikTok really kicked things into gear with what started off at 15, then quickly moved to 30, then 60 seconds with Instagram following suit. YouTube Shorts jumped on the bandwagon at 60 seconds and TikTok upped the ante to 3 minutes and then to a whole 10 minutes. The average "short" video in 2022 turned out to be 3:34! How long should your video be? As long as it needs to be to tell a high-quality educational or entertaining story. Don't worry about the platform… know your audience.

Honors Our Membership
Catalytic Chamber Work Continues Because Members Invest
By Jacki Dezelski, IOM, President|CEOIt is a rewarding and gratifying honor for the Manatee Chamber to be chosen as the 2022 Florida Chamber of the Year by the Florida Association of Chamber Professionals (FACP). The award recognizes excellence in member benefits, operations, finances, communications, advocacy, and more. It is a direct reflection of the investment our membership makes (and recommits to every year at "renewal time") in the member-driven mission of our Chamber.
The award was announced in December at FACP's annual conference, attended by more than 100 Chamber industry leaders from across the state. Over the three-day conference, my biggest takeaway was a renewed appreciation for the difference that Chambers are making every day in their communities. This conference was initially postponed due to Hurricane Ian and as we gathered two months post-storm, the catastrophic impact that was wrought in our state was top of mind. The immediate past Chairman (2022) of FACP is John Lai, President of the Sanibel-Captiva Islands Chamber of Commerce. His Chamber's facility was destroyed and his members' business were devastated - and several other Chambers to our south are in similar situations. But in these communities, Chamber staff, board leaders, and members immediately jumped into action with government, non-profit, agency, and business partners to begin recovery efforts. Even in the face of life-changing personal loss, leaders have been working non-stop to direct public, private, and individual recovery efforts to help others. It's what Chambers - and Chamber members - do!
The Manatee Chamber traces its roots to the launch of the Bradenton Board of Trade in 1889. We've grown to a 2,000+ member organization that serves the greater Manatee County region. For more than 130 years, businesses have recognized the value and influence of working together through the Chamber. Our members have built and supported the Chamber so that it has an award-winning program of work, sound management practices, and industry-leading member benefits. Thank you for your investment!
“This award is a recognition of the important work the Chamber does on a daily basis," said Rick Bisio, 2022 Chairman of the Board. "It reflects catalytic membership support, individual engagement, the highest level of professional contributions by our staff, and a community that coalesces to keep our region moving forward.”
public policy
Legislative Update
The Chamber’s Public Policy division, with the support of our members, provides ongoing advocacy and assistance to our local governments and regional authorities. Chamber committees meet to assess issues affecting our community and develop policy positions and initiatives that provide a voice for the business community and a platform for effective advocacy. Each year, the Chamber's Legislative Committee pulls together priorities from all of the committee work to create our State and Federal Business Agenda. Once approved by the Chamber's Board of Directors, it is the foundation for our state and federal advocacy work.
In February, several members of our Legislative Committee will spend two days in Tallahassee presenting our priorities and meeting with our Florida House and Senate representatives. They will also meet with members of the Cabinet, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Environmental Protection. The 2023 Florida legislative session kicks off Tuesday, March 7 and our trip to the Capitol is a valuable opportunity for our elected officials to hear from the business community as they consider new legislation.

Job Shadow Day Matches College Students with Chamber Member Employers
The Manatee Chamber partnered with the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus for a Student Job Shadow Day in November. This provided the opportunity for local college students to be matched with a business leader to explore "a day in the life" of their possible future industry or occupation.
One-on-one discussions about career pathways, best practices, and other career development-related advice allowed students to ask questions, receive relevant feedback, and grow their network.
The next Job Shadow Day is scheduled for Friday, March 24. If you would like to be a part of education and workforce initiatives as well as future job shadow opportunities, please contact Tara Poulton at TaraP@ManateeChamber.com.
Thank you to the following members for hosting a USF student:
• Bradenton Area Convention & Visitors Bureau
• Manatee Community Foundation
• Manatee County Sheriff’s Office | Child Protective Investigations Division
• Karins Engineering
Job shadow opportunities help build awareness among college students about career opportunities with our members' companies. Making those connections before graduation helps keep more students here in our region.

• State Attorney’s Office of the 12th Judicial Circuit

It's Time for Project TEACH
Join the Manatee Chamber as we present the Project TEACH program at area elementary schools on Thursday, April 20. Project TEACH is designed to increase career awareness among 4th grade students. More than 150 volunteers will be needed to reach every classroom. Volunteering is EASY and takes only a few hours of your time. An orientation and breakfast will be provided before volunteers head to their classrooms. If you have a specific school or teacher request, please let us know when registering.
Schedule: 7:00 AM - Orientation breakfast at Wakeland Support Center
8:45 AM - Arrive at assigned school 9:00–10:00 AM - Classroom activity

Last year, they also covered the costs for staff appreciation items purchased throughout the year. Without the help of this partner, the school’s End of Year Student Goal Achievement Celebration may not have been possible. This Partner also made a huge contribution, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to their generosity, families living in east Manatee County were able to access their E-Learning programs from their homes, while schools were closed, by waiving the WIFI installation fee.
Good Things Come in Big Packages, Too Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County

beyond the 4 walls of our building. From doing outreaches within our surrounding neighborhoods to partnering with local businesses, our heart is to be a place where people can know God, find family, live in freedom, and discover their purpose. Justin and Christy Phillips, with Minuteman Press, are a perfect example of the meaning of “community” at Bayside. They serve at Bayside, support their mission, and call Bayside their home church.
Bayside Community Church is a multi-location church, with campuses in Manatee, Sarasota, Hardee, and Hillsborough counties. Whether it’s through family-friendly weekend services or serving the community, Bayside continues to see lives changed as people connect with God. In 20 years, Bayside has witnessed thousands of lives changed by coming into a relationship with Jesus Christ as well as into a relationship with each other. The very nature of Bayside cannot be pinned to a building, a person or an event, rather, it's about people and about helping people connect with God.
In addition to our weekend services and ministries within Bayside Community Church, we also operate the Bradenton Dream Center, CityServe Southwest Florida, Legacy Business Leaders and Bayside College, an extension site of Southeastern University.

holiday coffee club
The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature hosted the Manatee Chamber of Commerce’s annual Holiday Coffee Club on December 16, 2022. Enjoyed by a sold out crowd, the festivities provided an opportunity to have breakfast, network with local businesses and professionals, and enjoy Saint Stephen's Children’s Choir sing seasonal favorites.
“Hancock Whitney Bank is proud to be a continuing sponsor of this event. It was a great way to cap off 2022. From our gracious new host, The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature, providing a winter wonderland setting, to the announcement from our Chamber President & CEO, Jacki Dezelski, that the Manatee Chamber of Commerce was voted number one, again, it was a wonderful morning,” said Mike Moschella, Hancock Whitney Bank’s Market President. “The turnout by our Chamber members was impressive and the generosity of our community was equally impressive, as they ensured everyone left with a little more than when they arrived! Thank you to all for allowing us to be a part of this annual event. Hancock Whitney Bank is here to support our community’s efforts to make 2023 another great year of increased opportunity for all.”

Manatee River Fair Association, Inc., was delighted to host the January Coffee Club to kick off the fair again this year. We appreciate everyone who took time out of their busy schedule to come out to see what the fair looks like before all of the hustle and bustle begins. We hope everyone enjoyed the Coffee Club and the 107th Manatee County Fair. In addition, we would like to thank our sponsors for their generous support and the numerous volunteers who helped make our Fair- “What a Sight to See in 2023” such a huge success.

HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN IN MANATEE COUNTY
EMPLOYERS, Did You Know? Volunteering doesn't just help others. It improves your organization! Employees who volunteer and feel good about where they work tend to:
• Take pride in their company
• Learn better critical thinking skills
• Enhance problem-solving skills
So, if you want a purpose-driven and engaged workforce, consider your staff for volunteering for ReadingPals!
COMMUNITY MEMBERS, Did You Know? In just 60 minutes, you can make a difference in the life of a child. In 2022:
• 50% of children in Florida are NOT ready for Kindergarten
• 47% of students cannot read at a minimally proficient level by the end of 3rd grade
• Early intervention and individualized attention give students the best likelihood of success
In ReadingPals, you will mentor VPK (4-year-old) students at local child care sites to positively influence students' understanding of the fundamental building blocks of early literacy. These relationships that the mentors build with the students enhance a solid social-emotional foundation for young learners. And that's something we can all feel good about!
