#ManateeStrong You. Your Team. Your Business. Your Chamber. Our Community. Throughout the past four months of our community facing the full brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have worked really hard, personally and professionally, to focus on opportunity - opportunities to listen, help, reassure, reassess, advocate, and act. Our Chamber team, alongside our dedicated Chamber board of directors and committee members, has made major adjustments to key "whats" and "hows" in Chamber programming and priorities over the past few months, but the "whys" have not changed. Serving local businesses and supporting their success - even when success might be measured by pure survival - has been at the heart of the Chamber's mission for more than 130 years. The "whys" have given us the motivation to think differently and act quickly. I am so thankful for the ways our Chamber and many other partners have been bringing resources to help with relief, restarting, and recovery. Within the first few weeks of March, we launched the #ManateeStrong initiative to deliver positive outreach, connect our community to resources, help businesses promote special offers, and share stories about the every day heroes making a difference. The ManateeStrong Facebook group quickly grew from a Chamber staff idea to an active online community in just a few days. We saw 3,500 join the Facebook group in the first week and now engage with a ManateeStrong group of more than 6,600. We also quickly increased our publicity of JobFocus.com as a way to help businesses connect to potential employees - this was really important early on for those companies with essential products and services. We were able to partner with 15 other organizations to reach out to the community with JobFocus.com information. Our response has been quick, guided by a deep determination to be a source of accurate, official information and a desire to help our members cut through the noise of so much information being sent and posted. Our efforts were also guided by the more than 5,000 phone calls we made to members within the first month. From online listings of which restaurants were offering take-out, to which retail establishments offered online ordering and curbside pick-up, to where PPE was available locally, our team was focused on helping businesses protect their employees, share their message, and preserve their customer base.
As resources became more abundance, and the types of information business owners sought grew, the Chamber launched a new website at RecoverManatee.com. With this new website, we could focus on what our local businesses were telling us they needed, from accurate information to funding opportunities to connections for much-needed resources. With this new website, we could focus in on what our local businesses were telling us were the most important connections we could make for them. It is organized into four main areas: • Relief – Access to information, assistance, and resources including loan/grant programs, tax credits, fee and filing deadline changes, and more. • Restart – Links for guidance and recommendations during all phases of the Governor's plan, with updates from agencies including the CDC, OSHA and Florida Department of Health, as well as guidelines, industry-specific resources, links to vendors for health and safety products, and more. • Recover – Links to live and recorded webinars covering a variety of topics that can assist you and your team in developing strategies for recovery. A future focus will be on mid- and longer-range measures needed to transition through our economic recovery with strategies that position your business and our economy to return to a growth trajectory. • Reimagine – As our community, state, and country explore long-term strategies to build resiliency in our economy, we will ensure that the voice of local business is heard. The Florida Scorecard offers a synopsis of important metrics that inform a 2030 Plan for our state with the ability to drill down to the county level.
We also needed to quickly adjust the "how" of delivering two of the most powerful benefits the Chamber offers: networking among business professionals and sharing information and expertise through ongoing education and professional development. So... who else became Zoom, Teams, and GoToMeeting experts like we did? You did! Our first virtual Business After Hours event was held on April 14 and our first virtual Coffee Club was on April 23. Each of these Zoom events had almost 100 attendees! What was remarkable was the overwhelmingly positive feedback we received about how much fun - and how needed - the time together was. There were even door prizes thanks to the magic of a Zoom-friendly prize wheel. We are grateful to the Chamber members who stepped up to sponsor these virtual events, even when they weren't quite sure how they were going to work: Turning Points; Brightway, The Dillon Agency; Servpro West and East Bradenton; Legal Shield / ID Shield; Manatee County Supervisor of Elections; and Advantage Business Partners, LLC. We also significantly ramped up our webinar offerings and have hosted 14 since the beginning of March. The topics have ranged from Zoom, Teams, and Google to Legal and HR issues to a Workforce Wellness series focused on the mental health of our workforce. We also took our monthly Headliners events online to offer you the opportunity to hear from leaders who are making an impact. Our first two virtual Headliners featured Manatee County Administrator Cheri Coryea (June 10) and Secretary Halsey Beshears, Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (July 8). We hope you can join us for our next Headliners event on July 29 as we welcome Manatee Schools Superintendent Cynthia Saunders. In June the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County asked the Chamber to lead in getting free, reusable, cloth masks to businesses that wanted to supply them to their employees. Overnight, we built an online tool to handle requests and manage distribution from both our Lakewood Ranch and Bradenton offices. The response has been fantastic and we have filled orders as small as two masks and as large as 1,000. With all of this good and important work, we recognize that there are still challenges ahead as our community, country, and world deal with COVID-19 and an ever-changing environment. If you have ideas to share about how we can help in new ways, please pick-up the phone and call me at 941-748-3411 or send an email to me at JackiD@ManateeChamber.com. Now, more than ever, the Manatee Chamber is here to be a champion for your business. Like you, we have implemented new strategies to pivot and adapt, but our mission is as clear as ever in focusing on local businesses, our economy, and our community’s quality of life. The Chamber remains committed to being your trusted source of information, your voice to our policy makers, and your connection to the resources you and your team needs. We are grateful for your support and your investment in our mission. Be well and on behalf of our Board of Directors and Chamber staff team thank you for the privilege of your partnership,
As of July 12, we have given more than 34,000 reusable masks to 598 businesses and non-profits. You can request masks for your employees at RecoverManatee.com.

44th Avenue, Southwest District Plan Highlight County’s 2019 Accomplishments Manatee County Administrator Cheri Coryea marked the completion of a successful first year on the job by delivering the 2019 County Administrator’s Annual Report in March. The report highlights the hard work of the 1,900 county government representatives who serve this community. The report gives an overview of the County’s many accomplishments over the past year, including several successes from the voter-approved half cent sales tax for infrastructure and a new five-year plan for the Southwest District. Some of the Annual Report highlights include: • 2019 was the busiest year of construction using the citizenapproved Infrastructure Sales Tax. Over the past year Manatee County Public Works team continued the design and construction of the 44th Avenue Extension Project that will connect Lakewood Ranch and east Manatee to west Bradenton. • The new Inclusive Manatee program launched last year with pilot project in Samoset to connect unemployed residents with jobs, aiming to lower neighborhood unemployment and increasing median income by 2022. County officials also worked with eight new and existing businesses on economic incentive grants that will result in 563 new quality jobs here over time. Those jobs will pay an average wage of $65,549 and result in $32.9 million in capital investment over the next five years, all right here in Manatee County. • A new 3-1-1 citizen call center replaced 12 separate County request lines in recent months. The new call center improves our customer service and aims to address most citizen inquiries and requests with a single call to the county. • County Commissioners approved the purchase of a former Red Cross facility in Lakewood Ranch which has been converted into a 24-hour EMS facility to improve response times in one of our fastest growing areas. Public Safety's new Rapid Activation Patient Treatment (RAPTOR) bus also rolled out for the first time in 2019. • Last year County Commissioners worked with our Redevelopment and Economic Opportunity Department to through the approval of create a five-year Southwest District Strategic Plan that will invest in some of our oldest areas with a $14.7 million budget for FY20 and over $26 million in projected revenues over the next five years. To learn more, download the Annual Report book or watch the video Annual Report at MyManatee.org/AnnualReport.
Significant progress was made on 44th Avenue over the past year. The road will eventually connect Lakewood Ranch to West Bradenton.
New RAPTOR bus can respond to vehicle crashes, mass shootings, or natural disasters.
County residents can now dial 3-1-1 to request service, ask questions, and report issues.

The Legislative Committee is a key part of our public policy and advocacy initiatives. The members of this committee share their expertise and interest to study and monitor state and federal issues that impact the business community and our quality of life. This committee is charged with developing the Chamber’s annual legislative priorities and meeting with elected officials and key policy makers to advocate for our local business community. Priorities, both state and federal, include transportation, education and workforce readiness, healthcare, economic development, and other substantive areas of legislation. Even though Florida’s next session does not start until March, the development of the Chamber's legislative agenda is soon under way. While many members are involved in the legislative process through their work, any Chamber member can join. It is a great way to learn more about our elected officials and how the legislative process impacts your business as well as give back to our community and support local businesses. This committee’s work contributes to the strength of the Chamber and ensures that we continue to address business concerns. If you would like more information or have questions, please contact Amy Farrington at AmyF@ManateeChamber.com or 941-7483411.
Accurate census data provides critical information for our community. This includes making sure that Manatee County receives its fair share of federal funding for hospitals, roads, schools and other public programs. It also determines how many congressional seats represent our region, which can impact public policy decisions. Future important and long-lasting decisions are based on census data that is collected now. Our responses today will determine outcomes and funding for at least a decade.
We Need Your Help
Manatee County is currently at a 56% response rate. We need your help to increase that response rate. Anything less than 100% means that our community loses out on significant resources. Please fill out your census - encourage your neighbors, family, and employees to do the same. “Make Manatee Count!”

Job Shadow Experience Opens Unexpected Doors
State College of Florida (SCF) student, Kelsey Ives, admits that at 25 years old she feels “lost.” She already has a bachelor’s degree in an industry she no longer wishes to pursue and participated in the Manatee Chamber’s Job Shadow experience hoping to learn about a new career path. Kelsey was paired with FCCI Insurance Group and is now considering a career she previously knew nothing about - investigating insurance claims.
Facebook.com/ ManateeChamber
“At first I was intimidated when I arrived at FCCI, the building was so big. I met with a lot of employees and heard a lot of information,” Kelsey shared at a networking session with other students and business professionals. “Then I met someone in the claims department, a former SCF student. Her work was exciting and is something I think I might like, too.” Steven Longo is majoring in business and accounting and plans on continuing his education at University of South Florida. He was partnered with Tom Grier with Entech. Tom said, “Steven was very personable and eager to hear about our business. We are a culture first organization and Steven really seemed to understand the importance of that and the value we place on hiring the right people to work at Entech.” The Chamber has started partnering with our local colleges and universities partners to provide students with an opportunity to get a glimpse into a “day in the life” of a career they are considering. This experience can help a student solidify that they want a job in that field, or, that it isn’t exactly what they thought it would be.

Amanda Suits, a student at New College of Florida spent an afternoon at the Bradenton Herald to learn about publishing and marketing. “Observing the advertising side of the newspaper was fascinating. I’ll never look at a newspaper ad the same way again.” Pam Tesseri and Patty Ford with the Bradenton Herald enjoyed showing Amanda how they have to work with tight deadlines and meet the needs and expectations of their customers. Steven Bressan, a senior at New College studying Natural Science, held a baby alligator at Mixon Fruit Farms. “I had no idea Mixon Fruit Farms had such variety,” Bressan shared. From growing oranges and bamboo to hosting weddings, Mixon Fruit Farms needs a diverse business plan to remain operational on a yearround basis," Bressan said. He not only learned about agriculture, but tourism as well. He appreciated the experience and said he will tell his classmates to participate in the next job shadow opportunity. If you would like to host a student in your business during a future job shadow day, please contact Amy Farrington at AmyF@ ManateeChamber.com or 941-748- 3411.

Hurricane Season Has Begun Hurricane season officially began June 1 and will run through November 30. It is important that businesses have a plan, communicate that plan, and be ready to implement it when the time comes. FEMA estimates that 40-60% of small businesses never reopen after a disaster. But with proper planning, your business will not be part of that statistic.
Plan. Communicate.
How quickly your company is back in business following a hurricane, will depend on how well you plan today. If you have not created your disaster/hurricane preparedness plan yet, now is the time. The following critical components should be included in your preparedness plan: • Resource Management: Identify the Resources needed for responding to emergencies, business operations continuity and communications during and after a storm. • Emergency Response Plan: Create plans to protect people and property. • Crisis Communications Plan: Create procedures to communicate with employees, stakeholders, and customers before, during and after a storm. • Business Continuity Plan: Steps and procedures that include strategies to overcome disruption of business operations. This plan should also include protection and recovery of information technology (computers, servers, software, etc.). • Employee Assistance and Support: Identify the needs of employees and families following an incident. Encourage employees to develop a family preparedness plan also. Once you have your plan created, ensure your employees are familiar with their role in the plan and conduct regularly scheduled education and training sessions.
Some sites that you might find helpful: • Ready.gov/Business - includes numerous toolkits, checklists, training resources, and other valuable information that will help you protect your business by planning ahead. • Fema.gov/Preparedness-Checklists-Toolkits - offers a variety of preparedness checklists and toolkits that businesses can use to improve preparedness. • #ManateeReady (Text ManateeReady to 888-777) - This mobile tool provides information for Manatee County emergency planning. You can learn more about the status of emergency operations, learn your level for evacuation zones, sign up for CodeRed Alerts and other important emergency information. The Manatee Chamber of Commerce wants to make sure you and your business are prepared hurricane season. Should anything happen, we want you back in business as soon as possible to ensure our community’s quality of life.

Josh Matlock with CareerSource Suncoast said about his Leadership Manatee experience, “I've lived and worked in Manatee County for the past ten years and Leadership Manatee delivered a rich experience full of new insights. My only regret is that I waited ten years to participate, so my advice is don't wait, apply now!”

business after hours We really enjoyed hosting the Business After Hours at Boast Volkswagen on March 10 and we want to thank everyone who came out. Scotts Deli Food Truck was there with delicious Mexican Street Tacos and Cuban Sandwiches along with a great selection of beer and wine - we finished with sweet cookies from Cookies by Cookie Cottage. We added some sizzle and fun with Raffle Prizes: from complete car detailing, baskets of wine to the grand prize, a 55Vizio Smart TV! Everyone went home with something and had a smile on their face. Bob Boast Volkswagen has been serving Manatee County and has been a member of the Manatee Chamber of Commerce for over 50 years. We take great pride in providing our area with both high-quality vehicles and our top-notch service. Feel free to come back by to look through our extensive inventory of vehicles or come and test drive one! Call us with any questions you may have about buying or selling your vehicle, we are happy to be your local resource.
