EDITORIAL Hi Folks, What a few weeks we have had - power cuts, lack of water pressure to the point it takes minutes to fill the kettle. Oh, and the air conditioner broke down - fortunately it is still under warranty so it was finally fixed, but it took a lot of calling the shop and a visit from the ‘technician’ at almost 11pm. Thank goodness we had a spare bed side lamp otherwise they would have been working in complete darkness. And now we have problems with the internet and this mag needs to go to the printer via the internet first thing in the morning. I’m not complaining though. This is a great place to be even if it is too hot and there are too many flies about! As always I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I have enjoyed putting it together. And we would like to welcome the many new advertisers we have this month.

Santorini Σαντορίνη

Santorini is like three islands. One side is the caldera with the villages of Thira, Imerovigli, Firastefani and Oia perched so far above the sea that it may as well be a painting. This is the commercial part of Santorini. This part of the island brings in most of the money and is completely dependent on it’s image to attract the visitors. They do a damn good job. You can say what you want about the changes tourism brings to a community but it is impossible to not be impressed with the beauty of these towns and if there is another earthquake they will be sorely missed when they slide down into the sea. Perissa The towns of Perissa and Kamari attract to their black sand beaches, thousands of suntanned boys and girls with perfect bodies. What the tourist guides don’t tell you about black sand which would be fairly obvious if you think about it is that it’s hot as hell. On a summer’s day you cannot walk from your towel to the sea without your flip-flops. You can look down the beach and see the heat rising in waves off the black sand and the shore is lined with flip-flops, waiting like patient dogs whose masters have gone for a swim. Perissa and Kamari are full of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops. The drop in package tourism may have hurt business somewhat but it has made these beaches a better place for people who 8 Sunshine Magazine

want a little Greece with their Greek Island. There are supermarkets, campsites and even some kind of water park for kids in Perissa. Both Kamari and Perissa have diving centers. On the way to these beaches you pass through towns like Megalochori and Emborio which are agricultural communities that held out till the last minute before giving in to tourism, where you can still find restaurants that are filled with mostly Greeks. Akrotiri The third part of Santorini is Akrotiri, known of course for the famous ruins from the Minoan period. The actual village of Akrotiri is not as well known and that is for a number of reasons. The main reason is that the road to the archaeological site does not even go through the town. Tourists see the site and then head for the next spot on their itinerary or else to the beach. Very few go to the village. So on the island that is probably the most popular tourist destinations in Greece there is a village with all the qualities of a remote island. There is not much to see in Akrotiri town. People go about their work. They are farmers mostly or engaged in some kind of craft. Probably many of the people work in hotels and restaurants around the island. But it is a quiet village and enjoyable to wander around in. There is an old fortress at the top of the town www.sunnynumbers.com

which was destroyed during the earthquake in 1956. This was the site of the town and instead of restoring it they rebuilt the town below the fortress. You can still go up and wander around. From the top of the village you can see the caldera of the volcano and miles of grapes. In fact you can see most of the island. The narrow section of the island which contains Akrotiri has the two best beaches (Red Beach and Vlichada), some of the best (and cheapest) tavernas, and is close enough to the popular Perissa beach too. There are beaches within the volcano crater too like Caldera Beach. Before you get the idea that Red Beach and Vlichada are remote, secluded beaches, no such luck. It’s rows and rows of umbrellas and beach chairs, but in a setting that could be on another planet if not for the familiar blueness of the sea.

that comes from the drink you have and the knowledge that there is nowhere you have to be. Some of the hotels provide live Greek music for their guests. The Villa Mathios for example features George Papalexis, an excellent bouzouki player with several CD’s who plays with an assortment of friends, relatives and fellow employees at the hotel.

Santorini Nightlife

There is certainly plenty of nightlife in the beach towns but the true romantics stay in or near Thira and get back there from the beaches with plenty of time to shower, take a short nap and then walk to one of the bars that line the volcano for a few drinks and to watch the sunset. These are the types of places where friendships are made since you are all sharing the same remarkable experience. It is an experience that heightens one’s awareness of nature and his own place within it. It’s a sense of awe combined with the relaxation

Santorini Archaeological Sites

Akrotiri There is more to Santorini of course then the bars, restaurants, views of Thira, the quietness of Oia or the beaches and nightlife of the outer coast. There are the ruins of Akrotiri which some claim is evidence that the people that once populated the island may or may not have been the civilization of Atlantis. The first trace of the city was discovered by French archeologists after an eruption of the volcano in 1866. Professor Spyridon Marinatos later unearthed the rest of the city which was preserved by volcanic ash. Marinatos was killed by a fall on the site and he is buried among the stones to which he had devoted his life. Since the ruins are mostly of mud brick the site is covered to shelter it from the elements. You should get here early because once the tour buses arrive it becomes a slow process. There are the ruins of Ancient Thira on a mountain between the beaches at Kamari and Perissa which are best visited in the early morning before the sun has gotten too hot. The terraced ruins that overlook the sea date back to the 3rd century BC and the Ptolemies, with also the remnants of Hellenistic and Roman civilization. Many of the artifacts found in ancient Thira and Akrotiri can be found in the Prehistoric

Museum in Thira which you can find by asking directions from anyone.

Galleries and Wineries in Santorini

When you get to Santorini you may notice endless fields of grapes. If you know grapes you will be surprised at the way they are grown on the island. They don’t have them in arbors but they are low to the ground in baskets which

are actually made up of the stems or stalks of the vines themselves. They don’t water them either since there is very little water on the island. The grapes and the other crops are watered by the dew. There are a number of large wineries on the island that have tours all day long that include wine-tasting and food. Most people go to the larger wineries which are well advertised in the hotels and around the island.

The Volcano of Santorini

It’s an active volcano that erupted in 1956 and may do so again one day though perhaps not in our lifetime. Proof of the life that still exists within this giant hole filled with water is the island of Nea Kamini in the center of the bay 10 Sunshine Magazine

www.sunnynumbers.com

which emerged in 1707. Next to it in the older island of Palia Kamini you can take hot mud baths, usually an indication of something brewing beneath the surface. You can reach these two islands by excursion boats. Across the bay is the island of Thirasia which is actually the other rim of the volcano and was once part of the same island. There are hotels, tavernas and a village that faces the cliffs of the volcano on the main island. Since there were no human remains found in the ruins of Akrotiri, it’s a good indication that the inhabitants of Santorini knew what was coming and took off for safer ground. But did they make it? It is believed that when the volcano erupted in the 14th century BC it caused a tidal wave that destroyed the cities of Minoan Crete. That is quite a tidal wave and the eruption was perhaps the biggest cataclysmic event within human history (so far). For all Santorini has to offer, it’s fine beaches, active nightlife, restaurants, tomato keftedes (deep fried tomato balls are an island specialty), raki (like ouzo but stronger and does not taste like licorice), excellent wines (the volcanic soil and climate make the island one of the best places to grow grapes in the world): it’s the volcano that is the star of the island. Take it away and all you have is another island with tomato balls. The black sand beaches, the wine, the raki are all by-products of the explosion that destroyed life on the island and created in it’s place a destination that offers what few others do, that is not only fun but profoundly dramatic in scenery. I don’t think you could go to another planet and be more impressed then you will be when you see Santorini for the first time.

volcano, or should we stay on the volcano and make the trek to the beach by bus, taxi, rental car or motor-bike? First of all let me say that everyone wants to stay in Thira and Oia. They have seen the pictures and imagine waking each day to a glorious view. But if you have children this is not practical. Who wants to stay somewhere that you are on edge all the time because you imagine your kids falling off a 1000 foot cliff? Plus kids usually want to go to the beach and getting them there on a daily basis can be a strain. But if you are staying at the beach what if you want to make the nightly visits to Thira? Another hassle. So it is Where to Stay in Santorini a matter of making the choice of whether you This is the big question for many people. want to be near the beach and rely on public Should we stay at the beach and visit the towns transportation or a rental car or bike to see the of Thira and Oia and the fantastic views of the sunsets and experience the nightlife or do you want to stay in the cliff-side towns and take the trek to the beach. A car is a good idea anyway so you can see the rest of the island. There are some nice tavernas in the village too. For the price it would be tough to beat the Villa Mathios or their cousins and neighbours the Villa Kalimera which is highly praised by their guests and by Dolphin Hellas Travel. Neither have caldera view. You have to cross the street to see it. The Hotel Ether in Oia has what comes close to Caldera View rooms, they come close because they don’t face the center of the Volcano but are off to the side, but the view is still spectacular. Also the Delfini Rooms www.sunnynumbers.com

Fuel Economy

11 Tips for Saving Money 1

2 3

Keep the tyres inflated properly. This one is simple and a potential lifesaver. Under-inflated tyres waste fuel and wear out the tyre tread. Also, check tires regularly for alignment and balance. A well-tuned engine burns less fuel. Get regular services and follow through with routine maintenance. The right parts oil keep your engine happy and less thirsty for fuel. Get the junk out of the boot. A weigheddown car uses more fuel. For every extra 250 pounds your engine hauls, the car loses about one mile per gallon in fuel economy. Carry only the basic emergency equipment and items you really need.

4

Buy the lowest grade fuel that is appropriate for your car. Check your owner’s manual for this information. As long as your engine doesn’t knock or ping, the usual fuel you’re using is fine. You could save hundreds a year.

5

Don’t top off the fuel tank. Too much fuel will just slosh and seep out. Why waster those extra pennies.

6

Drive intelligently. Don’t make fast starts or sudden stops. You’re just overexerting your engine and burning extra fuel. Gradual acceleration also helps automatic transmissions run better. Engine-revving wastes fuel, too. Lighten up on the accelerator. The faster you drive, the more fuel you use. Driving at 90kph rather than 100 kph can improve your fuel economy by three kilometers per gallon (5.54 litres).

7

Combine errands in one trip and plan stops for the most efficient route. You’ll save yourself time and money.

www.sunnynumbers.com

8

Do not rest your foot on the brake. The slightest pressure could cause a drag that will demand additional fuel use and wear out the brakes sooner.

9

Tighten up that fuel cap. Make sure it’s on securely. Gas easily evaporates from the tank if it was an escape.

10

Buy a fuel-efficient in car. When pricing cars, factor in long-term fuel costs. Keep in mind that sunroofs add wind resistance, lowering the mileage per gallon.

11

Be smart with the air conditioning. On the highway closed windows decrease air resistance, so run the air conditioner. But in stop-and-go traffic, shutting off the air conditioning and opening the windows can lighten your fuel use. Air conditioning can lower your fuel economy by 10 percent to 20 percent.

The Peak District National Park was Britain’s first national park, established in 1951, and is visited by people from all over the world. They come to find peace, tranquillity and adventure, experiencing some of England’s finest climbing, caving, walking and cycling. It is here that you will find Chatsworth House, one of, if not the finest of England´s Country Houses. The ancestral home of The Cavendish family, the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire still live here. Elizabethan interior walls and the Hunting Tower on the hill above the house dates from the 1580s. The first Duke rebuilt Chatsworth in Classical style between 1686 and 1707, with the Library and North Wing added by the 6th Duke between 1790 and 1858. The park was landscaped by the 4th Duke (1720-1764), who engaged ‘Capability’ Brown to reshape the formal garden into the more natural one you see today. The house itself is magnificent, if a little overwhelming, while the gardens are a treat, and the surrounding park is a superb area of open space with fine scenery, woods and views of the house. In the house there are 12 rooms that visitors can see. Many of the 175 rooms have been converted to flats, offices and storage areas, but those accessible for viewing, includes several state rooms that are quiet simply stunning, full of fine art, Italian sculptures and fantastic furniture. Chatsworth houses a collection of European and Oriental porcelain and a dazzling display of silver. There are paintings by old masters such as Rembrant, Van Dyck, Tintoretto and Landseer. The present Duke is also a collector and amongst the works he has added is a sculpture by Angela Corner and Elizabeth Frink and paintings by Lucian Freud. It is also possible to visit the farmyard behind the house, where typical farm animals can be seen in context; with milking demonstrations and other insights into life on a farm for both the people and the animals. A special time at Chatsworth is Christmas when the house is dressed for the Festive Season. The house has also featured in the period drama film based on Jane Austen´s novel, Pride and Prejudice and in the upcoming film, The Duchess, staring Keira Knighley. •

Keira Knightley Sexiest movie star of all time?

K

eira Christina Knightley shot to fame in British film Bend It Like Beckham after several television appearances in the Nineties. Born in Teddington, South West London in 1985 and daughter of Scottish playwright Sharman Macdonald and English theatre and TV actor Will Knightley. She first asked her parents for an agent at the tender age of three, but they refused, not wanting their daughter to follow them onto the stage. Keira kept at them, and they finally gave in when she was six. However, her parents still had a few tricks up their sleeves. As part of the deal, Keira, who is dyslexic, had to study through the school holidays, and she was only permitted to work on productions if they didn't interfere with her education. Her first big acting role came in 1994 when she was nine, in the romantic feature A Village Affair and then at 12 she was cast in a television film called Coming Home with Peter O'Toole, Joanna Lumley and Emily Mortimer. In 1999 Keira landed a part in Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace alongside Natalie Portman for her close resemblance to the Hollywood actress. It was reported that even their mothers had trouble telling the pair apart when they were in full make-up. Two years later she appeared in teen horror film The Hole before football film Bend It Like Beckham launched her into the stratosphere of the silver screen. The blockbusting Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy saw the British star acting alongside heart throbs Johnny Depp 30 Sunshine Magazine

and Orlando Bloom and in romantic comedy Love Actually she starred with Colin Firth, Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant. The half-Scottish actress earned ÂŁ900,000 from her part in the original Pirates of the Caribbean, enough to buy a flat in Mayfair, London and move out of her parents' home. She continues to star in box office hits, including war-time film Atonement with James McAvoy adapted from Ian McEwan's novel and earned herself an Oscar nomination as Jane Austen's heroine Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. This year she has starred in The Edge of Love and The Duchess, and with King Lear and My Fair Lady due out in 2010 this is one lady who will be around for the next decade. Keira is currently dating actor Rupert Friend who was her co-star in Pride and Prejudice as the caddish Mr Wickham, but she remains secretive about her private life preferring to shy away from media attention. Keira Knightley has been voted the sexiest movie star of all time, beating Rita Hayworth, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Angelina Jolie. www.sunnynumbers.com

Suddenly I was kissing Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom and bang, there you go, instant bloody stardom. I'd always wanted to be an actress, always dreamt of it, but I don't think you're ever quite prepared for being a movie star.

Like Princess Diana, her direct descendent, Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire, born Lady Georgiana Spencer, was beautiful, glamorous and adored by the public. But while her beauty and charisma made her a household name, one thing seemed to escape her: Love. Beneath Georgiana’s glamorous facade lay an intelligent, vulnerable woman stranded in a loveless marriage to the Duke (Ralph Fiennes), one of the richest men in England. Frustrated by the limitations imposed on her by virtue of her sex and her class, she rebelled, entering into an intense relationship with the beautiful Lady ´Bess´ Foster, (Hayley Atwell), thereby setting up a complex ménage a trois with the Duke. Georgiana’s rebellion extended to the public sphere where she tore down conventions, becoming a political campaigner for the liberal party. In doing so she fell for Earl Grey (Dominic Cooper), the future Prime Minister, finally discovering the meaning of true love. But could true love survive the strictures Of the Duke, of Bess and of Society - the pressures of marriage and motherhood, friendship and loyalty, of class and celebrity?

Why am I drinking bottled water? Like many people I like to look after myself, Then one day recently I began to think about why I am buying all these bottles of water. What benefits are to be gained from bottled water as opposed to the water I can get from my tap? I thought that by buying bottled water it was purer and better for me, it came from natural sources and it tasted better. Or was it? There was something niggling in the back of mind about my pre-conceptions on bottled water. So I set myself a task. Was it the best option?. After much research on the internet and reading through countless leaflets I had collected so much information, it truly blew the my theory right out of the window and made me realise that the way to go was to invest in a water filtration system, especially if I cared about the planet and global warming, which I do. I am one of those people who think it’s time we should all do ‘our bit’ to save the planet. The facts I found out below make quite startling reading… 1. Bottled water is limited in quality. We cannot be sure where it has come from and how it is treated. 2. It is also questionable in quality. It is sometimes less pure than local tap water. 3. It has been proved that some companies have bottled nothing more than tap water. 24% of bottled water is just filtered tap water. 4. Re-cycling – In America it was estimated that approximately 30 billion plastic water bottles were purchased. Of that only 12% are re-cycled. The remaining 25 billion bottles were either land filled, littered or incinerated. It takes over 450 years for a plastic bottle to de-compose in landfill sites. 5. One bottle of water takes up to 40 litres of water to produce. 6. Environmentally, it is having a huge impact on our planet, wildlife and is actively contributing to our global warming. 7. Re-cycling plastic water bottles is not a safe option – over time it degenerates and produces carcinogens, phthalate leaches from the plastic. Phthalates are endocrine disruptors, which means they block or mimic hormones, affecting the body’s normal functions and the effect to this over time may add up. When exposed to high levels of phthalates during the critical development periods, male foetuses can have malformed reproductive organs, included undescended testicles. Some experts link phthalates to low sperm count. 8. Finally, it’s the most expensive option. The ‘credit crunch’ is having huge global implications. The Euro/£ ratio is the worst in living memory! We can save ourselves a few hundred Euros a year by switching to tap water. Filtered tap water in the home is the healthiest, safest, most economical and, above all most environmentally

sound way to drink water. I could cut down on my bottled water consumption, save money and pro-actively help save our planet. Did you know that by installing an ‘in home’ water filter system your tap water is…. 1. Free from chemicals! 2. Free from Chlorine! 3. It helps remove: Bacteria, Calcium, Chloride, Chlorine, Cryptosporidium Cysts, Flouride, Giardia Cysts, Herbicides/Pesticides, Nitrate, Particulate, Sodium, Taste and odour metals such as Iron, Lead, Copper, Magnesium, Mercury and Zinc!. 4. Bacteria free!. 5. Positively green! 6. Incredibly cheap, huge savings on bottled water! 7. When just chlorine is removed, tap water rivals the quality of most expensive bottled water! 8. Crystal clear, great tasting drinking water! So armed with all this information I contacted a company called Healthy H2O who are based on the Camposol Urbanisation just outside Mazarron. I had seen one of their adverts in one of the free papers which captured my eye. I’m glad I rang them because they were extremely, friendly, helpful and professional. They came out the next day and installed the system which was two small cylinders fitted underneath my sink. One was a Carbon block cylinder, the other a ‘Royal Doulton’ ceramic cylinder. They also fitted a slim and elegant tap onto the sink itself where the filtered water was obtained. The really nice man who fitted the system for me explained that the carbon block filter removes chlorine and chemicals, whilst the ceramic filter takes out all the cysts and bacteria. Since that day, over two weeks ago I have enjoyed drinking pure, clean, great tasting water, free from toxins, bacteria and contaminants. My kettle, once cleaned of the calcium deposits is staying lovely and clean! My morning cuppa tastes better too, no more scum on the top which stains the sides of the cup! I was also given a ‘free water jug’ for my fridge so I don’t have to re-cycle plastic bottles. But do you know what I am really appreciating now. Something I never thought about before… I no longer have to carry heavy bottles home from the shops and I have so much more available space in my cupboards and fridge! But best of all is I am saving money! and helping the planet!

Thus Massa found himself easily ahead of Kovalainen, and was clearly sparing his equipment near the end when, with just three laps left, his Ferrari engine expired on the pit straight. The Brazilian kept his helmet on but still couldn’t hide his tears from the TV cameras.

Toyota’s Timo Glock confirmed his strong qualifying form with a fine second place, ahead of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen. Hamilton, the pole position at the Hungaroring, was slowed by a tire problem early on and could only manage a fifth-place finish, which kept him on top of the championship points standings. The Finn then inherited a comfortable win over Glock and Raikkonen, while Renault’s Third on the grid, Massa outdragged outside Fernando Alonso made a clean race to fourth, front-row started Kovalainen when the lights ahead of Hamilton and Nelson Piquet on went out, then out-braked Hamilton on the another solid race in the second Renault. outside of turn one to jump to P1. I was under pressure from Kimi, with soft tires and I was struggling quite a lot. We knew since Friday that the soft tires would be difficult. “I had a really good car. It was perfect until last stint. Unbelievable, on my first year...” Raikkonen, for his part, admitted that he must improve his qualifying form. “I think we could have done the race a little bit better but we were stuck behind Alonso [on the first two stints]. I was stuck behind him until the second stop so it was a bit late by that point. I had a good car and I was able to catch Timo but I had to back off in one moment. A Great Read Bringing Down The House Ben Mezrich

Nominally a work of fiction, this novel is nevertheless based on the real-life account of a group of students from the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology who did the seemingly impossible and took the casinos of Vegas for pretty much all they were worth. Those who know the story might wonder why the author feels the need to ‘decorate’ the facts at all - a bunch of snotty intellectuals using elaborate cardwww.sunnynumbers.com

counting methods to repeatedly get the better of the house over a 20-year period is entertaining enough in itself - but it remains a truly enjoyable read nevertheless. Such a great read in fact that it was released as a movie this year. But, as any book worm can testify - its usually better on the printed page rather than the silver screen.

Loose The Gut in 4 Weeks WEEK 1 KICK START

Running is the daddy of all the calorie-burning exercises, and all you really need to do it is a decent pair of trainers and a watch. If you’re a novice, then the walk/run approach is fine. Start off by alternating two minutes of fast-paced walking with two minutes of jogging and, after a few sessions, gradually increase the time you are jogging while decreasing the time you are walking. Your first target is to achieve 20 minutes of continuous running. If you’re already a seasoned runner, then you should know that the most effective way to shed the pounds is interval training. Mixing fast bouts of running with a jogging recovery is one option, or you can alternate hill climbs with flat roads – a workout most easily executed on a treadmill rather than on the road. Short, higher-intensity workouts have been proven to burn more calories than long, slow exercise, and they take up less of your time, too. TIP OF THE WEEK

DISCIPLINE YOUR DIET

Eating at least one midday snack lessens your obesity risk by 39 per cent. But it all depends on what you’re feasting on. Choose foods with a low Glycaemic Index – they’ll keep you feeling satisfied for longer. Tastiest options include: Nut and seed muesli bar (check the sugar content – ideally, it should be less than 10 grams), A handful of nuts and raisins, Oatmeal crackers topped with hummus, Fat-free yoghurt mixed with fresh fruit (cherries, plums and grapefruit are the lowest GI options), Banana smoothie made with skimmed milk or low-fat yoghurt.

THE BENCH PRESS This exercise has many variations: alter the angle of the bench, your hand position or the type of weight. Lay on a bench with your shoulder blades pinched together and feet either flat on the ground or on the bench. Buttocks should always be in contact with the bench. Grip the weight with hands equidistant from the centre, elbows bent to 90 degrees. Lift bar and lower towards the chest. Stop when the rears of your arms are parallel to the ground, to reduce risk of injury. Push the weight up until arms are straight. Complete six to 12 repetitions with a weight of 60-80 per cent of your one-rep maximum. Main muscles used: triceps, deltoid and pectoral muscles.

THE STIFF-LEGGED DEADLIFT A core powerlifting exercise which, when completed with almost straight legs as opposed to bent knees, places more emphasis on the glutes. The hamstrings are also recruited to help lift more weight. Use dumbbells or a barbell. With legs slightly apart, keep your back straight, your shoulders back and your head up. Brace your core and bend at the hips, without rounding your back. When you feel a stretch in your glutes and hamstrings, stop and stand up again. Keep your movement slow and controlled. Main muscles used: glutes, hamstrings and quadriceps.

WEEK 2 FULL SPEED AHEAD

Cast your trainers aside this week, and give those knees a break from pounding the streets. Instead, track down your nearest swimming pool. Swimming is one of the best whole-body exercises there is, but don’t fall into the trap of plodding up and down the pool aimlessly – get a plan. For beginners, aim to build up the number of lengths you can manage without stopping in between laps. In a 25-metre pool, 30 lengths or more is a good initial target, although 60 to 70 should be your ultimate aim. For those with a cardiovascular base already, split your session in half. For the first half, swim some lengths as sprints, some with a kickboard (just using your legs), and some with hand paddles (try www.gb-sports.co.uk), which help to build your upper-body strength. For the second half, swim your lengths at a steady pace – one that doesn’t leave you exhausted after five laps, but that does raise your heart rate. TIP OF THE WEEK

DROP THE DRINK

We all know the effects of too much booze on both liver and wallet, but, even if you stay within the recommended maximum intake of 14 units (for women) or 21 (men) a week, you could be drinking up to 1,200 liquid calories. Here’s our guide to the chief culprits...50-60 calories Single shot (25ml) of spirit: vodka, gin, whisky, 75 calories 50ml of port or sherry, 80 calories 125ml glass of dry red or white wine, 100 calories 125ml champagne, 160-180 calories A pint of standard-strength beer, 260 calories 440ml can of premium beer

SWISS BALL BODY HOLD This is a variation on the ‘plank’ exercise, which is a great way to build strength endurance in the abdominals and back. Instead of executing the move on a stable surface, you will be using the Swiss ball to call into action your stabiliser muscles. Place a bench and a Swiss ball about three feet apart. Get into a modified push-up position, with your toes on the bench and your elbows on the ball. Your body should form a straight line from your shoulders to your ankles. Roll the ball forward as far as you can, without allowing your lower back to sag. Hold for between 30 seconds and two minutes. Perform two sets, resting for two minutes in between.

LUNGE AND TWIST WITH MEDICINE BALL The twist motion here calls your obliques into action. If you don’t know what we mean by that, here’s a clue – love handles. Using an 8-10kg medicine ball, stand upright and hold the ball out in front of you.Step forward with one leg and lower your body. Don’t let your knees go past your toes. As you step forward, rotate your torso to the same side you step to with the ball, keeping your arms out in front of you. Push back to an upright position with your forward leg, bringing your arms back to the body.Do two sets of 12-15 reps for each leg. Move to a heavier ball when it is too easy.

WEEK 3 LOAD UP

One of the fittest men in the UK is not a footballer. Nor is he an athlete. In fact, he’s a cyclist. Chris Hoy is a world-champion sprinter on the bike, and you need only look at the man’s thighs to see why. This week, It might be too hot to pedal the tarmac at the moment but in the gym, select the ‘hill’ or ‘random’ setting on the stationary bike; doing so will ensure you alternate hard slogs against heavy resistance with easier periods. Intervals like this are effective at raising your calorie burn, both during and after exercise, and are psychologically easier to face than a solid 30-minute session. TIP OF THE WEEK

RESTAURANT RESTRAINT

Restaurants are akin to the devil’s dining room when you’re trying to stick to a healthy diet, with dishes often containing more fat and calories than you could ever imagine. If your stomach is growling as soon as you sit down, order some olives or a salad rather than attacking the bread basket. Swap deep-fried or battered foods for grilled, steamed or stir-fried options. And ditch the fried rice for boiled or steamed. Even if you order a salad, some dressings contain large amounts of fat. If you’re uncertain, ask for it ‘on the side’ and use it as a dip.

UNILATERAL DUMBBELL SPLIT SQUAT Your glutes are the main power source here. By using only one side of your body at a time, your glutes on that side are forced to control your alignment during the exercise. Stand three feet in front of a step or low bench, holding a dumbbell in each hand. Place your left foot on the step behind you. Slowly lower your body into a squat position, keeping the dumbbells by your sides. Lower until your right knee is bent at 90 degrees. Keep your torso upright and your right knee in line with your foot. Push back to the starting position and repeat eight times. Switch legs and repeat. Complete three sets on each leg.

BARBELL HACK This places the weight below and behind you, emphasising the load on your glutes. To do it, load a barbell with a weight you can squat comfortably for 10 reps. Step over the bar so that it’s behind you, and space your feet shoulder-width apart. Drop into a squat position and, with arms extended, grasp the bar with palms facing backwards and hands just outside your legs. Drive through your heels, extending your hips and knees simultaneously until you’re upright, with the bar just below your glutes. After a short pause, reverse the motion. Keep your back and arms straight, and brace your core. Stop before thighs are level with the floor. Complete three sets of 10 reps.

WEEK 4 ONE LAST PUSH

The words ‘circuit training’ are enough to scare you away from the gym for good, but how about ‘PHA training’? Short for peripheral heart action, it combines all-over body conditioning with a cardiovascular workout, and has two main elements: Resistance exercises: you alternate upper and lower-body resistance exercises to make your heart work harder. Cardiovascular exercise: short, sharp bursts of cardio activity ensure your heart rate stays elevated for the whole session. A sample 40-minute session could include five resistance exercises – say press-ups, lunges, bicep curls, squats and shoulder-presses. Do 15 reps of each, followed by 10 minutes of intense cardio work – running, cycling or rowing. Head to the weights for five more upper and lower-body exercises, then it’s back to the cardio for 10 minutes before a final five resistance exercises to finish off. Hardcore, but worth it TIP OF THE WEEK

DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE

Plastering the words ‘low fat’ on a packet of crisps or chocolate bar is a ploy that food manufacturers know makes their product more attractive. But ‘low fat’ does not always mean ‘low calorie’; often, the fat has been replaced with other ingredients, like sugar, meaning the product can end up containing an even higher calorie content. Here are a few expert tips for next time you’re tempted by those magic words on the packet...

BICYCLE CRUNCH In a study comparing 13 abdominal exercises, this one topped the list for muscle stimulation in the rectus abdominus. It can be done lying flat on the floor to start with; to intensify it, use a Bosu ball. Lie on a Bosu ball, with your lower and middle back centred. Slowly bring both knees to your chest and position both hands behind your head, with elbows pointed outwards. Bring your left shoulder to your right knee and straighten your left leg in front of you. Hold for a moment before gradually switching sides. Now bring your right shoulder to your left knee and straighten your right leg in front of you. Do as many reps as possible without losing your balance.

MEDICINE BALL LEG RAISES Use a light medicine ball for this exercise, until you have mastered the movement. Lie on your back, with arms and legs outstretched, holding a medicine ball behind your head. Crunch upwards, keeping your arms straight, and bring your feet to your hands. Pass the medicine ball from your hands to in between your feet, and lower your body back to the starting position, keeping your feet just off the ground. Now crunch back up, raising your legs and taking the medicine ball from your feet, before lowering your legs and upper body back to the starting position. Complete three sets of 10 repetitions to begin with. Focus on getting the movement correct before then increasing the weight you use.

Michael Caine: 'Heath Ledger Will Win An Oscar' Heath Ledger will be honored with a posthumous Oscar nomination for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight, his co-star Michael Caine insists. Ledger's performance has been lauded by castmates and preview audiences, and his name is already being mentioned as a contender for next year's Academy Awards - which will take place shortly after the first anniversary of his death. And Caine is sure he'll get a mention. Speaking as he unveiled his hand and footprints outside the famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, the 75-year-old says, "I think he'll get a posthumous Oscar nomination at least.” "I just watched him and talked to him for three days and I thought he was extraordinary."

www.sunnynumbers.com

When Heath Ledger passed away earlier this year, at the age of 28, he left the planet as one of this generation's great actors; a guy who battled many personal demons off the screen, for sure, but one who gave everything to the role. Ledger's version of Batman's arch-nemesis could go down as the darkest, baddest and craziest we've ever seen. Heath Andrew Ledger (April 4, 1979 – January 22, 2008) was an Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and SAG Award-nominated Australian film and television actor. After appearing in television roles during the 1990s, Ledger developed a movie career, appearing in nearly 20 films. He starred in both critical and box-office successes, including 10 Things I Hate About You, The Patriot, Monster’s Ball, A Knight’s Tale, Brokeback Mountain, and The Dark Knight. For his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, Ledger won the 2005 New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor and the 2006 “Best Actor” award from the Australian Film Institute and was nominated for the 2005 Oscar for “Best Actor in a Leading Role”and the 2006 “Best Actor” award from the BAFTA, as well as won an MTV Movie Award with Jake Gyllenhaal, for their “best kiss” in the film. His final film performance, uncompleted at the time of his death, is the role of Tony in Terry Gilliam’s forthcoming film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Posthumously, on February 23, 2008, he shared the 2007 Independent Spirit Robert Altman Award with the rest of the ensemble cast, the director, and the casting director of the film I’m Not There, in which he portrayed a character named “Robbie Clark”, based on a stage in the life of Bob Dylan. In addition to his work as an actor and as a producer and director of music videos, he also aspired to be a film director. Heath Ledger was born in Perth, Western Australia, the son of Sally Ledger Bell (née Ramshaw), a French teacher, and Kim Ledger, a race car driver and mining engineer, whose family established and owned the well-known Ledger Engineering Foundry. The Sir Frank Ledger Charitable Trust is named after his great-grandfather. Ledger attended Mary’s Mount Primary School, in Gooseberry Hill, and later Guildford Grammar School, where he had his first acting experiences,

starring in a school production as Peter Pan at age 10. His parents separated when he was 10 and divorced when he was 11. Ledger’s older sister, Kate, an actress and later a publicist, with whom he was very close, inspired his acting on stage, and his love of Gene Kelly inspired his successful choreography leading to Guildford Grammar’s 60-member team’s “first all-boy victory” at the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge. Heath’s and Kate’s other siblings include two half-sisters, Ashleigh Bell (b. 1989), his mother’s daughter with her second husband and his stepfather Roger Bell, and Olivia Ledger (b. 1997), his father’s daughter with second wife and his stepmother Emma Brown. Ledger was an avid chess player, winning Western Australia’s junior chess championship at the age of 10. As an adult, he often played with other chess enthusiasts at Washington Square Park. Allan Scott’s film adaptation of the chess-related 1983 novel The Queen’s Gambit, by Walter Tevis, which at the time of his death he was planning both to perform in and to direct, would have been Ledger’s first feature film as a director. Among his most notable/romantic relationships, Ledger dated actress Heather Graham, from October 2000 to June 2001. He had a serious longterm relationship with actress Naomi Watts, whom he met during the filming of Ned Kelly. He met and began dating actress Michelle Williams on the set of Brokeback Mountain, and their daughter, Matilda Rose, was born on October 28, 2005 in New York City.Matilda Rose’s godparents are Ledger’s Brokeback co-star Jake Gyllenhaal and Williams’ Dawson’s Creek castmate Busy Philipps. Problems with paparazzi in Australia prompted Ledger to sell his residence in Bronte, New South Wales and move to the United States, where he shared an apartment with Williams, in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, from 2005 to 2007. In September 2007, Williams’ father, Larry Williams, confirmed to Sydney’s Daily Telegraph that Ledger and Williams had ended their relationship. After his break up with Williams, in late 2007 and early 2008, the tabloid press and other public media linked Ledger romantically with supermodels Helena Christensen and Gemma Ward and with former child star, actress Mary-Kate Olsen.

sleep disturbances

In a New York Times interview published on November 4, 2007, Ledger stated that his recentlycompleted roles in The Dark Knight and I’m Not There had taken a toll on his ability to sleep: “Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night. ... I couldn’t stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going.” At that time, he told Lyall that he had taken two Ambien

80 Sunshine Magazine

pills, after taking just one had not sufficed, and those left him in “a stupor, only to wake up an hour later, his mind still racing.” Prior to his return to New York from his last film assignment, in London, in January 2008, while he was apparently suffering from some kind of respiratory illness, he reportedly complained to his co-star Christopher Plummer that he was continuing to have difficulty sleeping and taking pills to help with that problem: “Confirming earlier reports that Ledger hadn’t been feeling well on set, Plummer says, ‘we all caught colds because we were shooting outside on horrible, damp nights. But Heath’s went on and I don’t think he dealt with it immediately with the antibiotics.… I think what he did have was the walking pneumonia.’” ... On top of that, ‘He was saying all the time, “dammit, I can’t sleep”… and he was taking all these pills [to help him].’” In talking with Interview magazine after his death, Ledger’s former fiancée Michelle Williams “also confirmed reports the actor had experienced trouble sleeping. ‘For as long as I’d known him, he had bouts with insomnia,’ she said. ‘He had too much energy. His mind was turning, turning turning always turning.’ “ It was at about 2:45 PM on January 22, 2008, Ledger was found unconscious in his fourth-floor loft apartment, at 421 Broome Street, in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan. Emergency crews arrived soon after but were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at 3:36 PM, and his body removed from the apartment, while crowds of onlookers began gathering outside throughout that night. After two weeks of intense media speculation about possible causes of his death, on 6 February 2008, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of New York released its conclusions, based on an initial autopsy of January 23, 2008, and a subsequent complete toxicological analysis. The report concludes, in part, “Mr. Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine.” It also states definitively: “We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications.” The medications found in the toxicological analysis are commonly prescribed in the United States for insomnia, anxiety, depression, pain, and/or cold symptoms. It seems, history is repeating as the entertainment industry has lost another extremely promising star. In 1993 at the age of just 23 River Jude Phoenix died of an overdose. He was the older brother of actor Joaquin Phoenix. •
