Autonomous Communities of Spain

Spain is divided in 17 parts called autonomous communities. Autonomous means that each of these autonomous communities has its own Executive Power, its own Legislative Power and its own Judicial Power. These are similar, but NOT the same, to states in the US America, for example.

Granada, Cordoba, Malaga, Almeria, Cadiz, Huelva and Jaen, each with its own character, scenic, historic and cultural attractions. The landscape varies from the lushness of coastal areas to the dry, arid interior. Its capital is Seville, whilst it has major cities all along the coastline.

Spain has fifty smaller parts called provinces. In 1978 these parts came together, making the autonomous communities. Before then, some of these provinces were together but were broken. The groups that were together once before are called “historic communities”: Galicia, País Vasco and Cataluña. These communities have 2 official languages: Spanish and their own language (gallego or eusquera or catalán).

Historically it has played an important role in the story of Europe, in the ancient world it had close ties to the Phoenicians who settled in Cadiz.

Spain also has two cities on the north coast of Africa: Ceuta and Melilla. They are called “autonomous cities”.

Andalucía

Andalucia is the second largest of Spain’s autonomous regions and the most populous. Being in the south of the country it has strong ties to North Africa and has access to both the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Andalucia has eight provinces: Seville, 8 Sunshine Magazine

Tartessians and Phoenicians

Tartessos, home of the once-powerful Tartessian civilization, was founded in Andalusia in pre-Roman times. The Phoenicians colonized several areas on the Andalusian coast during the latter part of the second millennium BC. The most important settlement was Cadiz (Gdr or Gdz in Hebrew) around 1100 BC.

Carthaginians and Romans

With the fall of the Phoenician cities, Carthage became the dominant sea power of the western Mediterranean and the most important trading partner for the Semitic towns along the Andalusian coast. Between www.sunnynumbers.com

the first and second Carthaginian wars, Carthage extended its control beyond Andalusia to include all of Iberia except the Basquelands. Andalusia was the major staging ground for the war versus Rome led by the Barkid Hannibal. The Romans defeated the Carthaginians and conquered Andalusia, the region being renamed Baetica.

enjoys a microclimate that allows tropical crops such as pineapples and sugar cane to flourish. Inland, the landscape becomes rapidly more mountainous as it becomes Las Alpujarras - the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada which is the most southernly ski resort in Europe and the second highest range in Europe

Mighty Carthage used the area as a staging post to conquer the rest of the Iberian Peninsula, apart from the formidable Basque lands. From this position of power Carthaginian rulers such as Hannibal launched attempts to conquer Rome and usurp Roman dominance in Southern Europe.

Alhambra Palace

The Alhambra Palace overlooking the city of Granada, stands out as the most famous example of Moorish architecture, and perhaps it is the most known Muslim construction all in all.

Alhambra was started as late as 13th century, but Alhambra consists of palaces built by The Vandals moved briefly through the region several rulers, each had his own. Azahara, near Córdoba, and the Roman city of Itálica, near Seville, and at Palos de la Frontera, in the province of Huelva, the Andalusian port from which Columbus’s expedition of discovery was launched.

Vandals and Visigoths

The Spanish language spoken in the Americas is largely descended from the Andalusian dialect of Spanish, although the Spanish spoken at the Canary Islands resembles more the Spanish spoken in the Caribbean. This is due to the role played by Seville as the gateway to Spain’s American territories during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Andalusia Day (in Spanish, “Día de Andalucía”) is celebrated on February 28, to commemorate the date of the successful referendum vote on autonomy. Economy

Andalusia is traditionally an agricultural area, but the service sector (particularly tourism, retail sales, and transportation) now predominates. The construction sector, now growing very quickly, also makes an important contribution to the region’s economic fabric. The industrial sector is less developed than in other regions in Spain.

famous people from Andalusia

While there is a whole host of famous people from Andalusia, two that are internationally recognized are the painter and scuplter Pablo Picasso, born in Málaga, October 25, 1881. (Interesting fact about Picasso is his full name - Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso).

With the Church of la Familla Segrada (Barcelona), this must be Spain’s no. 1 tourist and cultural attraction. How many times every angle, every detail of the Lions’ Court have been photographed nobody could ever estimate. As a matter of fact the Lions’ Court was neglected for centuries, and as in almost every other country in the world, it was a foreigner who first appreciated its value. But the man in question, the American writer Washington Irving, was far from the first foreigner to arrive here. In 1812, the French The second well-known figure is actor, forces of Napoleon had stayed here, and in Antonio Banderas, also born in Málaga, other parts of the Royal Palace, and all they could contribute was the looting of everything August 10, 1960. nice and moveable. But when Irving arrived in Granada in the late 1820’s the story would change. His Tales of the Alhambra has more than anything else contributed to the fame of Moorish Spain and Granada, as well as the saving of the legacy of Alhambra. Irving wrote about the the Lions’ Court: “It is impossible to contemplate his scene, so perfectly Oriental, without feeling the early associations of Arabian romance, and almost expecting to see the white arm of some mysterious pricess beckoning from the gallery, or some dark eye sparkling though the lattice. The abode of beauty is here as if had been inhabited but yesterday.” www.sunnynumbers.com

Skiing

If you want to go skiing in Andalusia, head for the Sierra Nevada mountain range. There are two main resorts here: Sol y Nieve ski resort and the Sierra Nevada resort.

Sol y Nieve is the most southern ski resort in Europe. It’s not that big. In fact it’s quite small compared to most other European resorts. Having said that, the conditions are very good; the 1996 world ski championships were held here. The Sierra Nevada resort is suitable for all types of skier. There are many runs to choose from, all with different levels of difficulty. Being so far south, the climate here is a lot warmer than most other European resorts; a pleasant surprise for any skiers new to the resort. The nightlife here is also excellent, almost surprisingly so, for a ski resort. Spaniards (who are night owls anyway) come from Madrid and other major cities in Andalusia to check out the slopes and join in the Aprés ski. Its gets very busy on bank holidays and weekends. The resort is just 45 minuets from Granada and 2 hours from Malaga. The skiing season in Andalusia runs from December to April.

Main Coastal Tourist Areas

Costa de la Luz - The special charm of this particular “costa” lies in its virgin, windswept beaches, untainted towns and villages, dramatic sunsets and huge nature reserves. You may not find an all-night foam party but you can dance on the beach till dawn, sample the locally made Sherries and savour some of the best seafood in Spain. The Costa de la Luz takes its name from the clarity of the light which gives a luminous quality to this area of coastal pain stretching from the Portuguese border in the north down to Tarifa in the south. At the northern end of the costa there’s the provincial capital of Cadiz - largely overlooked by foreign visitors and 12 Sunshine Magazine

yet a fascinating place to visit for history and culture buffs. It was from here that the great explorer Christopher Columbus set sail on two of his voyages of discovery to the New World. Costa del Sol - A 160-kilometre mixture of action-packed tourist resorts, first-class family entertainment centres and unbeatable sporting facilities. The resort towns peppered along this southern Spanish Costa offer everything from fun-filled foam parties and cheap fish and chip joints through to the kind of glitz and glamour which only Hollywood stars and Saudi princes can afford. For anyone seeking a “sun and sea” holiday, the Costa del Sol is unlikely to disappoint no matter what your expectations or budget. It’s been a major magnet for foreign tourists since the advent of cheap charter flights in the late 1960s. The rich and famous snapped up swanky pads along Marbella’s Golden Mile while ordinary folk busied themselves by turning Torremolinos into one of mainland Spain’s biggest and most popular package holiday destinations. Costa Tropical - Exceptionally mild winters, long, hot summers and totally unique in the whole of mainland Spain. The Costa Tropical lies to the east of the far better known Costa del Sol on Spain’s southern coast. Tourism has started to take off here in recent years but this stretch of coastline is still a world apart from the high rise resorts of its coastal neighbour. How tropical is it? The Costa owes its name to the sub-tropical climate which makes it unique in the whole of mainland Spain. The exceptionally mild winters and long, hot summers allow for the cultivation of all kinds of exotic fruits normally associated with Caribbean countries. The fruit plantations here produce everything from papaya and avocadoes to bananas and mangoes. The region even boasts Europe’s last sugar producing factory (preserved as a reminder of the days when sugar cane was the area’s main source of income). The three resorts of the Costa Tropical are Almunecar - at the western end Salobrena -in the middle Motril - to the east.

Bagels Preparation time 30 mins Cooking time 30 minutes Ingredients 7g sachet dried yeast 4 tbsp sugar 2 tsp salt 450g bread flour poppy, fennel and/ or sesame seeds to sprinkle on top (optional)

2 Pour 200ml warm water into the bowl, then stir in the salt and half the flour. Keep adding the remaining flour (you may not have to use it all) and mixing with your hands until you have a soft, but not sticky dough. Then knead for 10 mins until the dough feels smooth and elastic. Shape into a ball and put in a clean, lightly oiled bowl. Cover loosely with cling film and leave in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1hr. 3 Heat oven to 220C/fan 200C/gas 7. On a lightly floured surface, divide the dough into 10 pieces, each about 85g. Shape each piece into a flattish ball, then take a wooden spooon and use the handle to make a hole in the middle of each ball. Slip the spoon into the hole, then twirl the bagel around the spoon to make a hole about 3cm wide. Cover the bagel loosely with cling film while you shape the remaining dough. 4 Meanwhile, bring a large pan of water to the boil and tip in the remaining sugar. Slip the bagels into the boiling water no more than four at a time. Cook for 1-2 mins, turning over in the water until the bagels have puffed slightly and a skin has formed. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain away any excess water. Sprinkle over your choice of topping and place on a baking tray lined with parchment. Bake in the oven for 25 mins until browned and crisp - the bases should sound hollow when tapped. Leave to cool on a wire rack, then serve with your favourite filling.

Croissants Preparation time 1 - 2 hours, Cooking time 30 minutes,

Ingredients

1kg/2.2lb strong white flour 450g/1lb unsalted butter pinch of salt 570ml/1 pint water and milk mixed 2 sachets easy bake yeast 1 egg for egg wash

1 Preheat oven temperature to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Sift flour into a bowl, cut butter into small pieces, add a pinch of salt, yeast and with a pallet knife cut in water and milk. This makes a horrible sticky mess but turn onto a lightly floured table and carefully knead to make a cohesive dough. 2 Shape mixture into a rectangle and roll out to approximately 30cmx20cm/12inx8in. Fold over the top third, fold up the bottom third, seal each side with the side of your hand, then put into a plastic bag and chill for 30 minutes. Turn 90 degrees and roll again to another rectangle. Fold up bottom third and seal with the side of your hand. Chill as before for 30 minutes. Repeat two more times, chilling 30 minutes between each rolling. Return to plastic bag and refrigerate for an hour. 3 Remove from fridge and roll carefully into a big rectangle 50cm/30cm/24inx12in cut in half lengthways, divide each half into 12 triangles. Then from the widest edge of the triangle, roll up tightly and place in a crescent shape on a tray. Beat egg for egg wash and with care, egg wash croissant. Make sure you do not go over a cut edge with egg wash. This will stop them from rising properly if desired. 4 When frozen take off the tray and put into a plastic bag. For use, remove from freezer the number required for breakfast, put onto baking tray and leave overnight. Put into a hot oven and cook for about 20 minutes until browned and risen.

Pita Bread 1 Dissolve the sugar in the 120ml warm water then sprinkle the yeast over the top and stir to combine. Cover and set the mixture aside for 15 minutes. 2 Add the flour to a large mixing bowl and form a well in the centre. Dissolve the salt in the 240ml warm water and add this to the flour along with the yeast mixture. Combine the flour into the liquids and bring the mixture together as a dough. Knead this thoroughly with your hands for 10 minutes then add the olive oil and continue to knead until the oil has been absorbed and the dough is smooth and elastic. 3 Bring the dough together as a ball then cover the bowl and set aside in a warm spot to rise for about 90 minutes, or until doubled in volume. At the end of this time turn the dough onto a lightly-floured surface and knock back before kneading well for 5 minutes. 4 Pinch the dough into roughly egg-sized pieces and roll these on a lightly-floured surface until about 6mm thick. Transfer to a lighly-oiled baking tray and prick each a few times with a www.sunnynumbers.com

fork. Transfer to an oven pre-heated to 180째C and bake for about 2 minutes before turning the breads over and baking for a further 2 minutes. 5 Remove from the oven then place on a work surface covered with a clean tea towel. Lay another clean tea towel over the top and allow the breads to cool completely (this stops them from drying out and becoming hard as they cool). When cold the pitas can be stored in plastic bags in the refrigerator or they can be frozen individually. 6 Before using them toast in a lightly-oiled frying pan or griddle pan for a few minutes on each side.

Mamma Mia! is a film adaptation of the West End stage musical, based on the songs of successful pop group ABBA, with additional music also composed by ABBA member Benny Andersson. The film did very well at the box office and had the largest opening weekend of any musical film in U.S. history. 20-year-old Sophie Sheridan lives with her mother Donna on the small Greek island Kalokairi, where Donna runs a taverna called the Villa Donna. Sophie is planning to marry Sky, and wants her father to be present to “give her away,” but does not know who he is. After reading Donna’s diary from 20 years ago, she concludes he is one of three men: Sam Carmichael, Harry Bright, or Bill Anderson. Without telling her mother and fiancé, Sophie mails invitations to all three, and hopes to find out which is her father. Sophie tells her two best friends, Ali and Lisa about her potential fathers.

mosaic in the courtyard floor splits. Donna hunts for flooring supplies in the goat house, hears noises upstairs, and peers inside the trap door and window. Recognizing the three men she had dated, Donna panics, but she cannot get inside the locked room. Finally, she climbs to the rooftop, and then falls through the top door, opened by a member of the Greek chorus.

All three men come to the island, thinking Donna asked them to come, and Sophie hides them in the old goat house, getting them to agree not to reveal she wrote to them pretending to be her mother Donna. Other guests have also arrived from the harbor: Donna’s longtime friends, single, fun-loving writer Rosie and rich three-time divorcée Tanya. While Donna is making repairs to the hotel she cannot afford there is a tremor, and the dolphin

Donna, unable to handle the memories, asks the three men to leave, so they simply stay in the harbor on Bill’s boat. Seeing the three men has sent Donna into shock and Tanya and Rosie try to reassure her. Donna explains the 3 potential fathers are on the island. Her friends remind her of her free-spirited past and Donna rebounds; the three sing together and dance through the streets, joined by many women of the town, dancing down to the harbor pier (Former ABBA member Benny Andersson appears playing the piano in this scene). Sophie visits the three men on Bill’s boat and convinces them to stay for her wedding after hearing all three men’s memories of Donna. When she hears Sky, she jumps into the sea and swims to him on the beach. There, they discuss their meeting and their love for each other, but Sky is ambushed by his buddies for his bachelor party. That evening, the three women, at Sophie’s hen party, recreate their old 80’s style musical group, Donna and the Dynamos to entertain at the bachelorette party. The three men accidentally come to the party, and the crowd separates. Sophie talks to Bill, and he realizes he could be her father. She asks him to give her away at the wedding. The masked guys from the bachelor party invade the hen party, in a wild dance In the commotion, the other two men also conclude that they could be the father, and separately, each tells Sophie that he will be the one to give her away at the wedding. Sophie then faints over the dilemma. To avoid contention between the three men, Sophie instead asks Donna to give her away. Harry, feeling responsible for missing 20 years of Sophie’s life, insists that Donna accept a very large monetary gift to cover the “cost of the wedding” You´ll have to buy or rent this movie to find out what happends next.

Firth was born in Grayshott, Hampshire, England, the son of Shirley Jean (née Rolles), a comparative religion lecturer, and David Norman Lewis Firth, a history lecturer and education officer for the Nigerian Government. Firth has a sister, Kate, and a younger brother, Jonathan, who is now also an actor. Firth’s parents were born and raised in India, because his maternal grandparents, Congregationalist ministers, and his paternal grandfather, an Anglican minister, performed missionary work abroad.Firth’s name is pronounced very similarly to the Old English

word collenferhð, meaning pride. Firth spent part of his childhood in Nigeria, where his father was teaching. He lived in St. Louis, Missouri when he was 11. He later attended the Montgomery of Alamein Secondary School, a state comprehensive school in Winchester, Hampshire, and then Barton Peveril College in Eastleigh, Hampshire. His acting training took place at the Drama Centre in North London. Colin Firth is widely regarded as “The English Mukesh”.

Film career

In 1983, Firth starred as Guy Bennett in the award-winning London stage production of Another Country. In 1984, he made his film debut in the screen adaptation of the play, taking the role of Tommy Judd (opposite Rupert Everett as Bennett). In 1987, he appeared alongside Kenneth Branagh in the film version of J. L. Carr’s novel, A Month in the Country. In 1989, he played the title role in the film Valmont. Following these earlier roles, it was in the 1995 BBC television adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice that Firth gained wider renown. The serial was a major international success, and Firth became known as a heartthrob because of his role as Fitzwilliam Darcy. This performance also made him the object of affection for fictional journalist Bridget Jones (created by Helen Fielding), an interest which carried on into the two novels featuring the Jones character. In the second novel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, the character even meets Firth in Rome. As something of an injoke, when the novels were adapted for the cinema, Firth was cast as Jones’s love interest, Mark Darcy. Continuing this in-joke there was

a dog called Mr Darcy in the film St. Trinian’s which Colin’s character accidentally kills. Firth had a supporting role in The English Patient (1996) and since then has starred in films such as Fever Pitch (1997), Shakespeare in Love (1998), Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), The Importance of Being Earnest (2002), Love Actually (2003), What a Girl Wants (2003), Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004), Nanny McPhee (2005), The Last Legion with Aishwarya Rai (2007), and the film adaptation of Mamma Mia! (2008). He has also appeared in recent television productions, including Donovan Quick (an updated version of Don Quixote) (1999) and Conspiracy (2001), for which he received an Emmy nomination. Firth is also a Jury Member for the ongoing Filmaka amateur short film contest.

Writer

Firth’s first published work, “The Department of Nothing”, appeared in Speaking with the Angel (2000). This collection of short stories was edited by Nick Hornby and was published to benefit the TreeHouse Trust, in aid

of autistic children. Firth had previously met Hornby during the filming of the original Fever Pitch.

Singing career

Why am I drinking bottled water? Like many people I like to look after myself, Then one day recently I began to think about why I am buying all these bottles of water. What benefits are to be gained from bottled water as opposed to the water I can get from my tap? I thought that by buying bottled water it was purer and better for me, it came from natural sources and it tasted better. Or was it? There was something niggling in the back of mind about my pre-conceptions on bottled water. So I set myself a task. Was it the best option?. After much research on the internet and reading through countless leaflets I had collected so much information, it truly blew the my theory right out of the window and made me realise that the way to go was to invest in a water filtration system, especially if I cared about the planet and global warming, which I do. I am one of those people who think it’s time we should all do ‘our bit’ to save the planet. The facts I found out below make quite startling reading… 1. Bottled water is limited in quality. We cannot be sure where it has come from and how it is treated. 2. It is also questionable in quality. It is sometimes less pure than local tap water. 3. It has been proved that some companies have bottled nothing more than tap water. 24% of bottled water is just filtered tap water. 4. Re-cycling – In America it was estimated that approximately 30 billion plastic water bottles were purchased. Of that only 12% are re-cycled. The remaining 25 billion bottles were either land filled, littered or incinerated. It takes over 450 years for a plastic bottle to de-compose in landfill sites. 5. One bottle of water takes up to 40 litres of water to produce. 6. Environmentally, it is having a huge impact on our planet, wildlife and is actively contributing to our global warming. 7. Re-cycling plastic water bottles is not a safe option – over time it degenerates and produces carcinogens, phthalate leaches from the plastic. Phthalates are endocrine disruptors, which means they block or mimic hormones, affecting the body’s normal functions. 8. Finally, it’s the most expensive option. The ‘credit crunch’ is having huge global implications. The Euro/£ ratio is the worst in living memory! We can save ourselves a few hundred Euros a year by switching to tap water. Filtered tap water in the home is the healthiest, safest, most economical and, above all most environmentally sound way to drink water. I could cut down on my bottled water consumption, save money and proactively help save our planet. Did you know that by installing an ‘in home’ waterfiltersystemyourtapwateris….

1. Free from chemicals! 2. Free from Chlorine! 3. It helps remove: Bacteria, Calcium, Chloride, Chlorine, Cryptosporidium Cysts, Flouride, Giardia Cysts, Herbicides/Pesticides, Nitrate, Particulate, Sodium, Taste and odour metals such as Iron, Lead, Copper, Magnesium, Mercury and Zinc!. 4. Bacteria free!. 5. Positively green! 6. Incredibly cheap, huge savings on bottled water! 7. When just chlorine is removed, tap water rivals the quality of most expensive bottled water! 8. Crystal clear, great tasting drinking water! So armed with all this information I contacted a company called Healthy H2O who are based on the Camposol Urbanisation just outside Mazarron. I had seen one of their adverts in one of the free papers which captured my eye. I’m glad I rang them because they were extremely, friendly, helpful and professional. They came out the next day and installed the system which was two small cylinders fitted underneath my sink. One was a Carbon block cylinder, the other a ‘Royal Doulton’ ceramic cylinder. They also fitted a slim and elegant tap onto the sink itself where the filtered water was obtained. The really nice man who fitted the system for me explained that the carbon block filter removes chlorine and chemicals, whilst the ceramic filter takes out all the cysts and bacteria. Since that day, over two weeks ago I have enjoyed drinking pure, clean, great tasting water, free from toxins, bacteria and contaminants. My kettle, once cleaned of the calcium deposits is staying lovely and clean! My morning cuppa tastes better too, no more scum on the top which stains the sides of the cup! I was also given a ‘free water jug’ for my fridge so I don’t have to re-cycle plastic bottles. But do you know what I am really appreciating now. Something I never thought about before… I no longer have to carry heavy bottles home from the shops and I have so much more available space in my cupboards and fridge! But best of all is I am saving money! and helping the planet!

Belgian Grand Prix If you’ve ever doubted just how much a sprinkle of rain can totally change the complexion of a race, Sunday should have put that doubt firmly to rest, as Lewis Hamilton emerged from a crazy ending to snatch arguably the most dramatic win of his career, only to lose it on a highly contentious penalty.

original attempt to pass Kimi Raikkonen, which resulted in him cutting the chicane, to have given him an advantage, and the 25-second penalty he was administered dropped him to third in the classified standings., and more importantly cuts his world championship advantage over Felipe Massa to just 2 points.

Most of the race was dominated by Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, who was attempting to join Jimmy Clark (1962-65) and Ayrton Senna (1988-91) as the only men to win four consecutive Belgian Grands Prix. He looked set to do so, as he led most of the afternoon – the first time he’s led a race since Magny-Cours, five races ago.

Massa kept his nose clean to inherit second from his teammate, and ultimately the race victory, on the weekend of his 100th race start, and the second straight race where Hamilton and Massa have been 1-2. Massa is now 17 points clear of Raikkonen in the championship, so Ferrari now have a de facto number one driver for the season run-in.

Unfortunately the weather gods were not shining on the Finn, and the rain would prove to be his undoing when, after a fantastic exchange of positions with Hamilton, he spun into the wall exiting Blanchimont with two laps to go. It means that Kimi still has the distinction of winning every Belgian Grand Prix he has ever finished. His demise left Hamilton to romp home, with a final lap nine seconds quicker than Massa to make sure, apparently taking victory on the 40th anniversary of Bruce McLaren’s win at Spa, the first F1 victory for his eponymous team. Hamilton had therefore extended his lead in the championship to 8 points, the biggest gap for any one driver since Raikkonen was 9 points clear after winning in Spain. Unfortunately for him, the stewards adjudged his

www.sunnynumbers.com

Behind him, and sneaking up on the rails, was BMW’s Nick Heidfeld, who gambled on intermediate tires and moved up four places on the last lap. In fact, if the race had been one lap longer, he would have won – he was 25 seconds quicker than Hamilton on the final lap, and the gap at the finish line was down to under 24 seconds, with Massa just 9 seconds ahead. Nevertheless, Heidfeld’s podium finish is the 11th of his career without winning, and he’s only one short of Stefan Johansson’s all-time record of podium futility. Not bad, for a circuit on which he’d never scored a point prior to 2007. He also recorded his 23rd consecutive race finish, and at Monza he will have a chance to tie Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of 24 straight race finishes, set between 2001 and 2003. In fourth place was Alonso, who pitted for inters

at the beginning of the last lap, and will share similar sentiment to Heidfeld on a good result, but not as good as he wanted. Spa was Alonso’s 7th points finish of the year, but he is still yet to finish on the podium, making him the highest driver in the championship not to have done so.

having Hamilton and Raikkonen go either side of him at Fagnes as they battled for the win in the closing stages. Behind him was Adrian Sutil, who took his best result of the season in 13th place for Force India, ahead of Kazuki Nakajima, who ruined his own chances by spinning at the first corner of the race and being collected by He beat Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel to the finish Giancarlo Fisichella. line in a photo finish, and the young German will be especially disappointed, as he was in third Right at the back was Jarno Trulli, who made a place entering the final corner. His dry weather lightning start to be up with the Ferraris at turn tires proved no match for the traction of the one, but spun at the end of the first lap and never inters, and both Heidfeld and Alonso swept by in recovered. He ended a lap down in 16th, and the final 100 meters. However, Vettel equaled his continued his curious form here – he’s only ever best result of the year (in Monaco), as Toro Rosso scored 1 point in his career at Spa, and that came moved ahead of Honda and level with Williams 10 years ago for Prost-Peugeot. in the constructors’ championship. In sixth was Robert Kubica, who had a relatively anonymous weekend by his recent standards. He was outqualified by Heidfeld for only the second time all season, and with Hamilton taking a maximum score, the 25-point gap between the two looks all-but-insurmountable given recent form. Seventh was Sebastien Bourdais, who sprung a surprise by going quickest of all in the Q1 session on Saturday. He was originally third at the beginning of the final lap, and looking likely to be the first Frenchman to take a podium finish in F1 since Jean Alesi at this same circuit 10 years ago for Sauber-Petronas. Like his teammate, he was caught out on the wrong tires and was shuffled back on the final tour, but he still ensured that Toro Rosso scored with two cars for only the second time in their history (after China 2007). By comparison, when they were the Minardi team, they only managed it twice in 20 years – and one of those was at the six-car U.S. Grand Prix of 2005 (the other one was Britain 1989). Thelast point on Sunday originally went to a dogged Timo Glock, who emerged from a relatively uncompetitive weekend with his third consecutive points finish, only to also receive a 25-second penalty for passing in the yellow flag zone for Raikkonen’s accident. This promoted Mark Webber into the points, giving Red Bull their first points for five races, having had a seven race points-scoring run earlier this year. Kovalainen rolled to a halt on the approach to Pouhon on the final lap but was classified in tenth, and of Webber’s teammate David Coulthard, who finished at Spa for the first time since 2004. Twelfth was Nico Rosberg, on a weekend to forget for the Williams team, who had their worst-ever qualifying performance at Spa-Francorchamps. Probably his most memorable contribution was

A Great Read Bringing Down The House Ben Mezrich

Devil May Care has already collected a jaw-dropping amount of publicity, with even the Royal Navy helping to put the book firmly at the top of the best-seller charts (Bond is, of course, a naval commander), and few books have had such wind under their sails (the relaunch of the movie franchise with the re-make of Casino Royale and Daniel Craig’s second Bond film, Quantum of Solace, is all part of the ever-accelerating momentum). Of course, this also gives the book farther to fall if it misses the mark. Released May 2008 www.sunnynumbers.com

The Countdown to 2012 1.5 billion people around the world watched as the Olympic flag passed into the hands of London’s mayor, Boris Johnson. “This marks the point when the eyes of the world turn towards London,” said Johnson, “and I’m honoured to accept the baton and start the sprint towards the finish line of London 2012.” The Beijing games started with an opening ceremony which mesmerised almost one quarter of the world’s population, it blessed with some of the finest sporting performances ever to grace an Olympic Games, and Team GB carried enough gold to put them ten kilograms over their excess baggage limit. China set a tough to beat bench-mark for future Olympic host nations, leaving Boris Johnson, Lord Coe, and chairman of the BOA, Lord Moynihan, pondering exactly how, London can do it. Yimou, the man responsible for coordinating 15,000 people to perform in perfect harmony at Beijing’s opening ceremony siad, “I think other than North Korea (and China), no other country can achieve this in the world.” He points to the existence of workers’ unions in western nations, blaming them for an unwillingness to withstand what Zhang terms “discomfort”. Last weekend the world bid an emotional farewell to Beijing 2008 and began

72 Sunshine Magazine

planning for London 2012 when the UK’s capital will host the world’s biggest sporting occasion. With just four years left to prepare, London proabably won’t replicate the grand scale of what was produced in Beijing, but big isn’t always better. According to London 2012 organiser, Lord Coe, “I don’t think in terms of living up to Beijing.” While the Beijing opening ceremony was conducted in what the organisers called “the Chinese spirit”, London’s will be a showcase of the capital’s own unique character. So what can we expect from that? If the handover ceremony in Beijing was, as Coe describes it, “a small glimpse of our DNA”, then there are a few certainties; music will play an integral role, as will David Beckham, and red double-decker buses will be a recurring theme throughout. Beijing’s opening ceremony will never be forgotten and the chances are it will never be surpassed, but London’s aim in 2012 shouldn’t be to wipe Beijing from memory or to outdo the visually stunning Chinese. London’s aim should simply be to inspire, to enthuse, and to show the world that we truly deserve the honour of hosting our third Olympic Games. We’ve got four years to achieve each of these objectives, so the question is: when the world arrives on our doorstep, will London be ready?

Surfer, Dude see the return of American Country and Western Ledgend -

Willie Nelson Willie Nelson (born April 30, 1933) is an American country singer-songwriter and actor. He reached his greatest fame during the so-called “outlaw country movement of the 1970s, but remains iconic, especially in American popular culture. In recent years he has continued to tour, record, and perform, and this, combined with activities in advocacy of cannabis, as well as a well-publicized 2006 arrest for cannabis possession, have made him the subject of renewed media attention. Nelson was born and raised in Abbott, Texas, the son of Myrtle and Ira D. Nelson, who was a mechanic and pool hall owner. His grandparents William Alfred Nelson and Nancy Elizabeth Smothers gave him mail-order music lessons starting at age six. He wrote his first song when he was seven and was playing in a local band at age nine. Willie played the guitar, while his sister Bobbie played the piano. He met Bud Fletcher, a fiddler, and two siblings joined his band, Bohemian Fiddlers, while Nelson was in high school. Willie Nelson is widely recognized as an American icon. His distinctive music and other social and political activities sometimes take a backseat to his pop-culture public image - that of an elderly, lifelong marijuana-smoking, tax-evading, biodieselburning, old-school cowboy-hippie troubadour. His image is marked by his red hair, often divided into two long braids partially concealed under a bandana. He has been featured in

Trouble Sleeping??

Advice to help you wake up refreshed Spent the night tossing and turning? Woken up feeling groggy? Here are some simple ways to try and stabilise your sleeping pattern which may enable you to wave goodbye to those restless nights and leave you feeling fresh and awake in the mornings. 1. Consistency is the key to a good sleeping pattern. Aim for seven to nine hours sleep a night and make sure to go to bed and wake up in the mornings at as near to the same time as possible each day. 2. Keeping a night light on in your room will not disrupt your sleep but if you need to get up in the night for any reason will help minimize disruption that a brighter white light might cause. 3.Prepare your sleeping environment by turning down the room temperature just before you go to bed. This will make sure it’s still warm enough to fall asleep but as it cools overnight it makes it easier to wake up. The ideal temperature is between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. 4. As the mornings get lighter in the summer time, invest in an eye mask to stop yourself from waking up with the 5am sunrise. You’ll appreciate those precious extra hours later in the day. 5.An hour or so before you plan on going to sleep, start winding down by doing more relaxing activities. Avoid TV shows and movies which may stimulate the mind and try reading a book or magazine instead. 6.Try to avoid excessive alcohol intake before bed. We all know seeing off a bottle of wine is probably not the best aid to a refreshing morning but even just one drink can effect how well you sleep. Alcohol disrupts the actions of chemicals in our brain which co90 Sunshine Magazine

ordinate sleep and its dehydrating properties can have a major effect on how good you feel when you wake up. 7.Drink some warm milk or chamomile tea before you go to bed. It’s not a myth both milk and chamomile contain sedative properties and warming milk up first will do nothing but help you become relaxed and fall asleep quicker. 8.Have a pot of coffee brewing in the morning - the smell will appeal to your senses and a little bit of caffeine isn’t that bad for you. In fact, research has shown that up to three cups a day can lower your risk of diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and colon cancer. Coffee can also lift your mood and treat headaches. But make sure prior to sleeping you avoid caffeinated drinks in the evenings. 9.Taking regular exercise will not only make you feel healthier during the day but also aid you in falling asleep at night. About 30 minutes exercise per day is sufficient. 10.Make sure your sleeping area is free from distraction. Power down your computer or TV if you have one in the room at least 30 minutes before you go to sleep or even better keep them out of the bedroom altogether. 11.If you’re finding it difficult to nod off, try delving into your memory to think of a ‘relaxing place’ which will calm you. For example, take yourself away to a lovely beach holiday you had once. 12.When taking a shower in the morning, make sure to exfoliate to get the blood flowing. Exfoliating the skin not only boosts circulation but gets rid of all those dead skin cells leaving you with a bright and glowing complexion. Turning the shower to cold at the end will raise the body temperature and help prevent colds by helping to kill off bacteria as well as making sure you’re wide awake. www.sunnynumbers.com
