Dear Readers, Welcome to our August edition. We are nearing the end of the summer and it’s time for the kids to get ready for school again. I hope all the kids have enjoyed their vacation and hope that they can’t wait to see all their school friends again. You will see lots of changes to our September issue of the magazine. It will no longer by called the Town & Country Magazine. We are joining it together with our edition of the Sunshine Magazine, making our publication even stronger and more powerful with an even larger distribution. So look out for the ¨SUNSHINE MAGAZINE¨ next month. We would like all our clients and readers to let us know what they think about our changes. Please email us at info@ sunnynumbers.com or call. It’s a luxury I know to have a swimming pool or a hot tub but necessary to cool you down and help you relax. Take a look at pages 4, 5 & 6 to learn about the healthy benefits of having a pool or spa and read our easy to follow maintenance schedule or contact the professionals. As the weather is now hotting up, I would like to remind everyone to take care of your skin in the sun, especially children and the elderly. The intensity can sometimes take people by surprise with dangerous consequences. See pages 8, 9, 10 & 11 for out top tips. Above all, enjoy the weather, get a drink, relax and enjoy reading the magazine. Till next month……. From the team at ¨Sunshine Magazine¨. NEED REGULAR MAINTENANCE OR SUPPLIES? Swimming Pool Maintenance
Swimming pools are open water systems and are constantly influenced by rain, wind and sunshine as well as swimmers using the pool. All pools benefit from professional maintenance and products. Your pool needs a regular MOT, supply of products and a regular comprehensive weekly, fortnightly or monthly servicing. Swimming pool treatment chemicals are for use in hot tubs, spas & swimming pools. You can use standard pool cleaning equipment and automated pool cleaners such as robots, vacuums & other outdoor pool cleaners. Automatic swimming pool cleaning equipment makes your life easier by saving you time and effort.

Here are 6 basic steps to maintain your pool on a weekly basis. 1.Completely backwash filter 2.Test water for Chlorine, pH and Alkalinity. 3.Adjust pH and Alkalinity as needed. 4.Add Chlorine to pool. 5.Vacuum pool floor and walls if needed. 6.Check and adjust water level as needed. Water should be half way up the skimmers.
Recommended Hot Tub Care Maintenance Routine Daily :
Check sanitiser level & dose as required Check pH level & dose as required Clean water line with Waterline Cleaning Paste
6 Town & Country
Weekly :
Oxidise hot tub with Non Chlorine Shock Add Spa Sparkle to help obtain beautifully sparkling water Add No Foam to control foaming If in area of high calcium hardness add No Scale to prevent scale deposits
Monthly :
Clean filter cartridge using Cartridge Cleaner Take water sample to check water balance
Periodically :
Due to the build up of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) the hot tub will need completely draining & refilling.
Pool Covers
Automatic & manual covers on swimming pools help you to conserve energy by keeping the heat in, the dirt out
and reduced water consumption due to evaporation. They are often made of strong durable materials which can take the weight of a human being. Pool covers can be sited above ground at the end of the pool or in a pit under the pool surrounds at one end out of site, or even in the pool floor. An average 50,000 litre pool can lose up to one and a half
times its capacity in evaporation alone. Some pool covers, cuts salt and chemical use by up to 50%. When chlorine is added to the pool water or produced by a salt water chlorinator, it eventually returns to its natural state as a gas and escapes. However, when a pool cover is in use the gas cannot disperse into the atmosphere. The chlorine gas is trapped below the cover.

Suncare, Sunscreen and Sunsense! Do you know the difference between UVA and UVB rays? You may think you know what ultraviolet does, but do you know the difference between UVA and UVB, or that applying one sunscreen over another could provide less protection, not more? Why do we need protection from UV rays? All experts agree that everyone needs some sunshine - the rays trigger the production of Vitamin D, essential for absorption of calcium from food and may even protect us from some cancers. Those rays are ultraviolet (UV) - an invisible form of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the sun. Our lifestyles mean we are more vulnerable to UV rays than ever. The majority of the most harmful rays, known as UVB and UVC, are prevented from reaching the surface of the Earth by the ozone layer, though some UVB rays and plenty of UVA get through. UVA rays cause tanning by stimulating cells to produce more of the skin’s natural pigment, melanin, but they can also cause wrinkles and ageing of the skin by contributing to the breakdown of elastin and collagen, proteins in the tissue that are elastic and allow skin tissues to resume their shape after stretching. Meanwhile, UVB radiation causes the skin to burn and, in the long term, exposure to both forms can damage cells and lead to skin cancer, which is at an all-time high, according to Cancer Research statistics. Cases of malignant melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, have doubled in the past 20 years, and one in five of those diagnosed will die. However, experts argue that the increase has less to do with depletion in the ozone layer, which filters out the most harmful UV rays, and more to do with lifestyle changes.

Compared with previous generations, changing wealth, fashion and holiday habits mean our total exposure to UV is much higher. ‘Rather than going to Blackpool for a week, people go to sunnier places abroad, which means a huge increase in their total exposure to UV’ s. They also go more often, and take winter sun holidays. Changes in fashion also mean that we have more exposed skin today than in past generations.’ What is the SPF system? The Sun Protection Factor system was established in 1962, by Professor Greiter, as a

guide for consumers on the effectiveness of sunscreens. SPF is, in fact, the measurement of the time it takes human skin to burn when exposed to UV rays. Sunscreens are then created in differing strengths by multiplying the minimum amount of time it takes for skin to burn to calculate an SPF based on the predicted time in the sun. ‘If the burn time is 12 minutes, a factor 10 would allow someone to be in the sun for 120 minutes before burning.’ This equation is what allows manufacturers to offer sunscreens in varying strengths - 10, 15, 20, 30 or 50 - and enables consumers to choose an SPF screen according to how long they plan to spend in the sun. It is also important to reapply the sunscreen every two to three hours and more frequently if doing activities where the SPF will rub off or wash away.’ SPF is only a measure of UVB protection but UVA rays can also cause skin cancer. Increasingly many manufacturers offer ‘broad-spectrum’ sunscreens that give protection against both UVA and UVB. ‘UVA is very important with regard to skin ageing and cancer too,’ says Sencan Tokgoz. ‘It’s best to have UVA and UVB protection in one cream.’

Labelling for UVA protection is less established than for SPF. In 1992, Boots introduced its ‘star system’ which outlines UVA content of sunscreen. A rating of up to five stars appears alongside the SPF rating. ‘We recommend using a cream with SPF 15 and a four-star rating, which gives a decent balance between price and protection,’ says Ed Yong, of Cancer Research. According to new EU guidelines, an additional UVA labelling regime of low, medium, high and very high protection is being used alongside traditional SPF ratings to provide guidance for the choice of the

appropriate sunscreen product. These guidelines have also banned the use of phrases including ‘sunblock’ and ‘100 per cent protection’. ‘No sunscreen products can provide full protection against UV radiation,’ Yong adds. ‘The only way to protect yourself fully is to completely cover the skin.’ ‘broadspectrum’ sunscreens that give protection against both UVA and UVB. ‘UVA is very important with regard to skin ageing and cancer too. Cancer Research advises that SPF treatments will achieve their full effectiveness only when applied to the skin in a quantity of 36 grams - roughly two teaspoons applied generously and evenly to the head and neck, and two tablespoons for the body. This complies with EU guidelines. To get the amount of protection offered by a particular SPF, it needs to be applied generously. Most of us apply too light a layer.’ The common practice of doubling up sunscreens - adding, say, an SPF 10 to an SPF 15 in the hope of creating SPF 25 - is ineffective, say experts. One will rub off the other.

Eyes need protection from UV rays too! Conditions related to UV damage in the eyes include cataracts, pterygium - an abnormal but usually noncancerous growth on the edge of the eye surface - and age-related macular degeneration, which is a key cause of irreversible vision loss. The risk of UV damage can occur not only as a result of direct sunshine, but also from light being reflected from surfaces including sand, snow, water and even concrete. Intense UV light can cause pain and temporary loss of vision. This means it is important to choose sunglasses which filter out UV rays beneath 400 nanometers, which are the most dangerous UV rays with the highest energy. Most opticians will be able to advise you on your options even if you wear prescription glasses. Take care if buying cheap glasses ie :from the local market, as these have very little protection causing more UV rays to enter your eyes and cause damage to the cornea, critaline and retina.

Do children need sunglasses? Very young children should not be exposed to bright sunshine at all. Parents should consider giving sunglasses to children aged from two years. Why the right clothes are first line of defence. It is possible to become suntanned through glass and you can also become tanned and even sunburnt while wearing clothes, though the amount of tanning or burning depends on both the weight and colour of textiles being worn. There is now an international standard known as UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) in place to determine the UVA and UVBblocking capability of textiles. Manufacturers of swimwear increasingly offer UPF swimsuits, hats and beachwear, in particular for children, whose skin is more sensitive.
