Merseyrail held their annual reception for distinguished business guests. It stems from a Dutch tradition where we welcome in the new year and thank their partners and stakeholders for their support during the previous year. We raised £75,000 for their chosen charities, which was the Heart and Chest Hospital, Based at The Broad Green site. Their Appeal Chairman Alan Birchall accepted the ceremonial cheque from our MD, Maarten Spaargaren. The other presentation was for £10,000 to kick off the fundraising for our new Charity for 2012,

the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the Royal Liverpool Hospital. It was accepted by Priscilla Hetherington, Ward Manager of the Unit.

Merseyrail say avoid traffic congestion and car parking problems by taking the Ormskirk train to Aintree for the 2012 Grand National.

It takes just 16 minutes to reach Aintree from Liverpool Central station and the reacecourse is just a few minutes walk from Aintree station. Before and after the race meetings there will be a seven and a half minute service to and from Aintree. How to have a stress free day at the races: t Buy your return rail ticket for your journey in advance to avoid having to queue. t Get to the racecourse early to soak up the atmosphere. t Back only winners!!

Nearly 3,500 more homes in the Wirral will get a doorstep collection for their garden waste from April. Cllr Dave Mitchell, Wirral Council Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Transport Services, said: “This is a significant step forward for the Council as we seek to improve our recycling rates from an already excellent 39.9% to 50% by 2020. “Arranging for an additional 3,500 households to have their garden waste collected at the kerbside will mean less waste going to landfill and no additional cost to the Council Tax payer, so it is an excellent result. We are grateful to the Council’s Waste and Recycling team and our contractors, Biffa, for managing to rearrange the collections in this way.”

EDITOR’S OPINION I’m all for dainty, beautiful presentations of food. Sometimes though, nothing gets the blood pumping like the thought of digging into juicy cuts of grilled meats and perfectly-done steaks alongside a massive eatas-much-as-you-can buffet with real variety. Taking the children to Bem Brasil on a Friday night proved a welcome break from cooking at home!

The staff made them feel as welcome as the adults, which was lovely and they fussed around them to help with their drinks. Children like the responsibility of choosing their own meals and the vast buffet certainly left them spoilt for choice. There were salad dishes, pastas, cold salmon, potatoes, cauliflower, garlic cabbage, soups and so much more to keep them

Pete Price The Honourary Scouser spent a sunny spring lunchtime with Lifestyle editor, Amanda Moss

hen I rocked up to the Salt House in the city centre what did I expect? I was excited to spend lunch with one of Liverpool’s most iconic personalities We have bumped into each other several times during the course of our work in the city but have never actually spent any time together other than exchanging pleasantries. From the moment I arrived through, the warmth surrounding Pete’s welcome was encapsulating. As I pulled out my notebook from my handbag I felt that I was being interviewed, as he quizzed me on my reasons for setting up Lifestyle magazine. Happy to talk, I soon realised the purpose of the meeting was to talk about him, and I swung the conversation round to him. We chatted about the celebrity culture, sharing the same opinions on many issues, some of which we are unable to print. Ha! His whole face lit up when he talks about our shared love of Liverpool. “I love the Liverpool vibe, but I don’t go out that often. The only time I do is when Claire Sweeney is in town,” he said, “ I have worked for 40 years and I am a workaholic. I love it.” He shared stories of his famous friends. “Cilla Black, what a woman, I took her out in Liverpool once, we went to Garlands. She said she would stay for one drink. Next thing she’s coming out the club at 7am and I get a call. “I can’t believe what you did to me” she says, “ I just got papped coming out the club with my coat inside out!” I love that story. She is an absolutely lovely woman, I am completely in awe of her.

I was picked.” Another memoir he relates to me “My dad gave my mum £300 to buy a fur coat and on the way to the shop she saw a baby shop, and debated whether to buy the coat or the baby. She bought me and to the day she died...... she said fondly she should have bought the coat”

Pete has got an incredible sense of humour and a sparkle in his eye when he talks about his mother. She was the driving influence behind his work “Pete was adopted as a baby and talked fondly of ethic, advising him to learn a trade to fall back on his adoptive mother, Hilda. “I still miss her now, should he decide to go into show business. So he she used to say to me that I was special because trained in the catering trade before stumbling

into DJing at the Cabin Club where he worked as a chef. “I picked up some records and started to play them, I shouted to everyone to get on the dance floor and before everyone knew it we had a disco there. It was new and fresh and people started to queue up outside the club for it. I was the chef working every hour god sends for £18 a week – then I got offered £25 a week to Dj…I had to pinch myself and was embarrassed getting my first weeks wages…lets face it..how can you get paid for putting records on? Since then I never looked back From there he went to the iconic Shakespeare and became the host and compere. Pete has worked for BBC Radio Merseyside and of course Radio City and City Talk. He writes a column in the Echo and has written for the Independent and Times. He adores Liverpool and said that he felt he had come home when the Lord mayor made him an Honourary Scouser in 2009. “Liverpool is an amazing place, “ he enthused, “You wouldn’t think there was a recession here, the restaurants are full, the shops are busy. It’s a glamourous, fantastic city. The clubs are full every night. Liverpool is thriving and has come a long, long way since the dark days.” He lives over in the Wirral. Why? “I sit in my lounge and look out at the fantastic waterfront that is Liverpool city, it’s one of the best skylines in the world, and I can look out and admire it every day. He wrote his best selling autobiography, Pete Price: Namedropper in 2007 and says it was “cathartic” to share his painful early memories of telling his mum he was gay and subsequently being sent to the doctor and then an institution to “cure” him. He still suffers from nightmares and cold sweats when he thinks about that traumatic time in his life. Will he write another book? “Yes, it’s called ‘The Bitch is Back” and will name all the straight men I have slept with and will come out on the day I die.” We both laughed heartily. Our meeting did not feel like a interview, but more of a catch up between old friends. We both struggled to shut each other up and the two hours we spent together sped by. I would have happily stayed another two hours but had to leave to collect my kids from school “I hear that you turn up with your kids to work,” he laughed, “Yes it’s true, they’re a part of me and my

Lifestyle, and that’s just the way it is.” Pete shared his little quirks, “I love kids, I have 14 god kids, but yours won’t be invited round to mine,” he laughed, “Because I have OCD. I even iron the duvets now. I iron everything.” Iron? I scoffed? What a waste of time, I don’t even possess an iron. “What?” he looked baffled and then laughed. “You have 5 kids and don’t own an iron. That is hilarious,” “People either love me or they hate me,” he said, “And that’s fine, because, like you, I tell it like it how it is. People say I shout but I don’t. I will cut people off who swear, break the law or slander people. I never sit on the fence I give my opinion. People listen all over the world to my show from as far as Australia and Canada.” The couple on the table next to us leave quietly. Pete said to me, “They havnt spoke for an hour…. That’s the most interesting lunch they have had listening to us two. More hearty laughter that no doubt drew attention to our table. That lunch time I met a most endearing man and nicest people I have ever spent time with. I felt privileged that Pete was open to share his highly entertaining and often emotional stories with me. He is now one of my highly regarded friends who I may call upon to do my ironing.

filler into a blood vessel using a cannula.

with Dr. Fab Equizi

The future of filler injections.

F

looking like you’ve done a couple of rounds with Tyson!

Traditionally this has been done effectively using needles. The big problem with needles is bruising, especially with deeper injections. Needles are sharp and slice through blood vessels causing trauma, bleeding and bruising. The deeper the fillers are being injected the more likely are you to hit larger vessels. Although it doesn’t affect the end result, sometimes after fillers you could leave

To get over some of these potential problems we are using a cannula instead of a needle for the bigger filling jobs. A cannula is like a needle but it is blunt at the end and the exit hole is at the side of the cannula as opposed to the end. Being round ended it doesn’t slice through blood vessels. As a result there is no bruising and less tissue trauma. Also there is no chance of severing other structures like nerves. More importantly it is impossible to inject

or many years now dermal fillers have been injected into the skin to improve lines and wrinkles. They have been injected under the skin to lift folds, into the lips to add shape and volume and even into fat and over bone to contour the face, define cheekbones and add volume and lift to facial tissues.

Another potential problem with a needle is the possibility of injecting filler into a blood vessel, causing an area of skin to be deprived of its blood supply with disastrous consequences.

A needle is required to make a little entry hole for the cannula in the skin but you don’t feel this with anaesthetic cream, use of cannulas has transformed bigger filling jobs in terms of risk, trauma and down time. Needes are still essential for fine skin work and lips where more precision is required however the use of cannulas has transformed larger filling jobs like volumisation and contouring. No bruising, less trauma less risk and no downtime are some of the advantages of a cannula over a needle. Some clients report less pain as well.

Welcoming one of the UK’s biggest sporting event of the year......

The John Smith Grand National 2012 Sporting Hero Beth Tweddle will launch this year’s John Smith’s Grand National

T

o kick start a momentous summer of sport in the UK, the olympic athlete will be teaming up with West Derby Group HPL Gymnastics to officially open the start of the three day extravaganza of sport and entertainment before the first race on Liverpool Day, Thursday 12 April. Beth’s appearance is just one of many events planned for Liverpool Day, other highlights include the Red Devils parachuting onto the course and Liverpool Band, The Christians will be headlining the Aintree Pavillion stage alongside an array of live music, comedy and of course raceday fashion.

Aintree sets the style stakes! The race is on to find the most stylish race goer at this year’s John Smith’s Grand National Ladies’ Day, as Matalan scouts for the most stylish dresser in the country’s hotly contested race day style challenge. Organisers of Ladies Day, on Friday 13 April, are encouraging both the men and ladies to put their best foot forward and strut their unique race day style in front of Matalan’s esteemed judging panel of fashion experts. The most stylish racegoer will win £5,000 cash and a host of other prizes including £500 worth of Benefit make up, a £500 Matalan shopping spree and the opportunity to appear in a Matalan fashion shoot. The style contest is open to anyone attending Ladies Day. Tickets for all events can be booked at www.aintree.co.uk

So how do you pick a winner? Place your bets at the Grand National and here’s some top tips to pick a winner. 1) It’s the luck of the Irish. Many Grand National winners have had the luck of the Irish with them, with all bar one of the last 10 winners bred in Ireland and 9 out of 10 ridden by Irish jockeys. This year’s prediction, Hold On Julio, was bred in Ireland. 2) It’s in the name. Half of Grand National champions over the last 10 years have had an 11 letter name, including last year’s winner, Ballabriggs. 3)Winning Stamina Horses who have previously won over at least 3 miles will be in a chance of winning the Grand National 4) Aged 10 The peak for a staying chaser is thought to be around 9 or 10 years old. Grand National trends back this up with 10 of the last 13 winners being aged 9 or 10. 5) Carrying weight of 10 stone 81lbs. Winners from over the last 10 years averaged at this weight, with those over 11 stone 5lbs least successful.

Merseyside will be extending a warm welcome to the many visitors heading towards Aintree for the 2012 Grand National. This year the festival promises to be as popular as ever with an estimated 150,000 people attending the event over the three days between April 12 and April 14. Despite the vast numbers attending, the festival has an excellent record for safety and crime. Merseyside Police has been working with Aintree Racecourse, local councils, Merseytravel and other partners to ensure everyone has an enjoyable, fun and safe day out.

Staying safe at The Grand National grand_national_advert.pdf

Here are a few simple tips to help your day at the races goes smoothly and safely: • • • • • • •

Arrive at the racecourse in plenty of time, everyone will be searched as they enter, please be patient as there may be queues Leave extra bags at home. Only bring what you need - it will help you get into the racecourse quickly Consider using public transport to and from Aintree – there are excellent bus and train services Look after your stuff, don’t leave handbags or mobile phones unattended Keep wallets and purses out of sight and take care with your cash when placing bets and collecting winnings Drink responsibly – being drunk can make you more likely to become a victim of crime After a day at the races please think about local residents and leave the racecourse area safely and quietly

Aintree is a great event – let’s keep it that way. Have fun but keep yourself and your belongings safe, drink responsibly and be considerate to local residents 10/03/2012

Stanley Park Festival is being backed by Liverpool Vision and comes just six months after the launch of The Beautiful North project which aims at boosting business and jobs in North Liverpool. Max Steinberg, chief executive of Liverpool Vision, said: “This festival is a wonderful event for North Liverpool and is a key component of raising the profile of the area. The route that the Sea Odyssey giants are taking through North Liverpool has been designed to highlight the huge potential for development and investment that exists there. “It is our aim for the area to flourish and become a vital source of prosperity, enterprise and creativity for the city once again and the success of the Stanley Park Festival is vital to that ambition.”

FAMILY FESTIVAL AT STANLEY PARK

More information on Stanley Park Festival and how you can get involved can be found at www. stanleyparkfestival.com - ‘Like’ the Stanley Park Festival on Facebook and find us @StanleyParkFest on Twitter.

20-22 April

Anfield’s Stanley Park is to have its own festival to coincide with the arrival of Sea Odyssey in North Liverpool. Stanley Park Festival will take place over three days and will encompass a food and drink festival showcasing the best offerings from around the city, live music, a family activity zone and children’s play area and a chance to find out more about community groups in North Liverpool. The three-day festival is the first of its kind in North Liverpool and will take place across the weekend of 20th-22nd April. Festival organiser, Gemma McGowan said: “Stanley Park Festival will be a real family day-out, those coming to North Liverpool will be able to see that it has changed a great deal and the arrival of Sea Odyssey rubber stamps this. The festival will be the icing on the cake for a landmark moment for this area and we hope to welcome guests from all across the city and beyond. “We have a few surprises up our sleeve that will be revealed nearer the time, but let’s just say Stanley Park Festival will be a fantastic celebration for how far this area has come.”

ROSSIE

ituated at the top end of Bold St, this is a cool, slick American 1920’s style restaurant, one of the few places that does Pulled Pork, a tender pork joint cooked slow for 15 hrs, made famous in recent times on the TV Show Man Verses Food, which has to be tried to believed. Ludus has a short but compact menu with a daily specials board. I like this idea as it means every dish can be given close attention, my dining partners were Mr.Pete Price and Liam Hinks who produces Anton Powers Power House show on Friday and Saturday nights on Radio City. We started with with 2 platters Americano which includes Sticky BBQ Chicken Wings, Cajun Potato Wedges , Breaded Garlic Mushrooms and sage Beer Battered Onion Rings served with a selection of dips. And the Mezzie Board, very tasty Lamb Kebabs, spicey falaffels , olives , homous and hot pitta bread. Between the 3 of us it was just right. The decor is fantastic and bang on trend; red leathers, blacks, whites and greys, with the most retro light bulbs I’ve ever seen.

There is also a downstairs bar wihich holds up to 50,Restaurant withreviews classic mirrors that turn in flat TV screens at the flick of a switch, very James Bond style indeed. This downstairs bar is a proper little hideaway which is going to become very popular with the in crowd , Then our main courses arrived , Pete had a steak Ciabatta , Liam went for the Signature Pulled Pork again served on a crusty Bagguette topped with homemade apple BBQ sauce and apple sauce. Both pete’s Ciabatta and Liam’s pulled pork both came with triple cooked home made chips that crunched with every mouthful! I opted for the squid in a crispy coating with a hint of chilli, beautiful mayonnaise. A lovely touch was the frying basket in which the squid was served. When we were done and dusted and thought we couldn’t eat any more Nigel the owner insisted we try one of the many home made puddings, this came in the form of a cherry frangipan tart with a rasberry coluis, summer berries and vanilla ice cream. And for someone who doesn’t have a really sweet tooth this was just to die for! Even down to the White chocolate and mint parfait truffles which rounded off a fantastic meal but the menu prices did not reflect the quality and high standard of the food served at ludus which incidentally is Latin for sport. Do give it a try because after one visit you’ll definitely be back for more.

Jason Donovan returns with new music, and a pledge to stay away from reality TV shows!

I

n his pomp, Jason Donovan was best known for his collaborations - both musically and romantically – but these days the Strictly Come Dancing star is looking for another bedfellow in the unlikely form of David Guetta. The 43-year-old star admitted he’s a huge fan of the French dance producer, who has previously worked on chart-topping tracks with Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Kelly Rowland. “That is honestly a dream of mine,” Donovan says. “I just love pop music; I love how one fantastic song can transform you in three minutes, and David is the King of that right now. My kids idolise him and I’m always robbing their iPods to listen to his latest stuff - they obviously know about the latest sounds far more readily than me! So the opportunity to work with him would be amazing. He hasn’t called yet, but here’s hoping. I’m sure the mix would be something special.” Not that Donovan is lacking his own creative inspiration, given that the release of his tenth solo album Sign of Your Love has again propelled him into the public’s music consciousness. It’s a welcome return to familiar territory for the star, who has just come back off the Strictly Come Dancing Live tour, immediately confessing that the rigours of the BBC reality series and accompanying theatre showcase were beginning to take their tour. “I swear, if I hear that opening Strictly title music again, I will jump off a balcony and end it!” he laughs. “The show was a bigger experience than I ever expected it to be; it was an incredible journey and I learned skills that I never thought I’d be accomplished at. INTERVIEW HUB

“But I’m truly exhausted by it. Since I signed up, I’ve been living and breathing dancing 24 hours a day! I don’t think anyone going into it really appreciates how utterly consuming the whole thing is. But, listen, I’m so grateful for the experience – it has kept me in the public eye and it’s always nice to be there. But, in the nicest possible way, I would never do anything again like that again!” So how did learning the tango and foxtrot compare with encountering black widow spiders and kangaroo testicles of I’m A Celebrity...? “There is no comparison!” Donovan laughs. “One experience involves sitting on your back, watching the trees grow. The other is getting out there and working your butt off. “I’ll admit, the jungle isn’t too pleasant, but no-one’s going to die outthere - it’s not in ITV’s interests. And I’m an Australian, that’s my backyard. The scariest thing for me wasn’t the insects, it was the other celebrities!” So Jason wouldn’t rule out completely the unholy trinity of reality television by doing Celebrity Big Brother? “I’ve been offered the show but it’s not one for me. I’m not a fan of people playing tricks to gain publicity. I’ve picked the best reality shows, they treat their celebrities the best and, honestly, I don’t think Channel 5 is for me. It’s a show driven by controversy; I don’t like that.” Back to the music, and the singer’s latest album, Sign of Your Love, is a collection of swing classics inspired by his time on Strictly. It marks a fantastic return to form

for the singer who is happy to get back to the real craft of music after a couple of years away. “A good song is a good song, and I’ve really enjoyed expressing myself on this album. There is a huge trend for swing at the moment, inspired by people like Michael Buble, no doubt. But it’s a genre that never goes away, and selecting songs that really mean a lot to me has been a fantastic adventure. I hope others enjoy the album as much as I do.” Jason Donovan’s new album, Sign of Your Love is out now. Lifelong Jason Donovan fan, Michelle Beaver from Liverpool finally met him after winning a radio phone in competition. She said, “I have followed him for over 25 years and finally got a chance to meet him. I had 25 minutes sat with him. Sipping champagne and eating lovely food I got to ask him some of the questions. One, about his past drug habit which he has recovered from, another about his lovely children and finally the main question I had always wanted to ask......” Please may I pinch your bottom!” By which he called me a cheeky monkey! 29

Writer

Sam Deno, 24, struggled with mental illness and turned her experience into a novel, The Sky is Falling Down. The mum of 2 from West Derby talks about her experiences.... What is the story behind the title of the book? The title describes my feeling at that sad time of my life, I really did feel at points that the sky was falling in. I loved the story ‘Chicken Licken’ when I was younger and I got the phrase from there so its a very fitting title ! What next? I’m curently in talks with literacy agents with regards to this book, to get it published as a hard and paper back book, hopefully this will spread the word to even more people, as not everyone has access to the internet to read my work as it is now. I’m hoping to write a series of children’s books, about two mischievous little boys, something I know a lot about with my 4 and 5 year sons! Explain how you were feeling at your lowest: I had lost all rational thought, in a nutshell I didn’t want to be here anymore, I did not have the energy to carry on, the illness had had me fully in its evil grip and had sucked everything I had out of me, all my strength and zest for life.I wasnt eating or sleeping so it wasnt just my mental state, my physical state was badly affected too. Luckily enough I had the support of my amazing family to get me out of that dark place, this is why I want to encourage people to tell someone, if you are suffering you need to make someone aware, you may not be able to get through it alone. What advice do you have for anyone in the same situation? Seek help, to tell someone what they are going through. Do not suffer in silence, I did this for a while and it was the worst time of my life. When people became aware that I needed help I felt as though a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I want people to know their is nothing to be ashamed about and there is people out there who is available to help you. tell us about the charity you are also helping: The charity I have chosen to work with is Imagine, it supports anyone going through mental distress, they offer accommodation and general help and support to sufferers and like me, they are trying to break the taboo of mental illness. I am going to be helping out in the fabulous Rosie Childs centre, which is a centre where woman can go to of a Sunday, when everything shuts down, such as day centres and hospital appointments. I cant wait to see where this book will end up and how it will help the charity.

Hi

Welcome to the April edition of the Lifestyle Magazine. We are really getting into the swing of things now at Ludus Lounge Bar. You may have noticed we have began to set out our decking and seating area in the courtyard outside the bar on Bold St. This sun trap is going to be a great place for our customers to sit relax enjoy a drink and watch the eclectic world that is Bold Street go by. Summer is nearly with us so stop by if you are passing. Event wise we are now starting to build up some great line ups in the “best kept secret basement bar” of ours. We have some acoustic nights some 1920 themed nights and the official Miss Liverpool 2012 after party. So a real good mix. I have to say a big thanks to our General Manager Lee Ayers who has come in and really took the venue onto the next level. He is a good I have known for some time and has a really interesting set of life skills. Not only has he lived in Switzerland, Dubai and Saudi Arabia, has 2 degrees but he has been DJing and promoting nights for many years across the city. He even played for Beyonce as her arena DJ at the Echo Arena when she was in Liverpool a few years ago. He has come in and paid real attention to detail on all the finer areas of the venue. Especially the music side. He is now looking for really unique nights for the venue. You can email Lee directly at lee@ludusbar.co.uk Well what a night the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards turned out to be. Ludus sponsored the night and we enjoyed a really entertaining night on the top table with a host of awards going to some of the most innovative companies in the region. The night was rounded off when we presented an award ourselves for the Best Business Practice. I must say a big congratulations to Amanda and Simon Moss and the team at Lifestyle Magazine for putting on a real top night. It was then up early the following day for a trip to Wembley to see Liverpool win the League Cup. Never ones to do it the easy way in the cup the game went to penalties with us eventually, as you all know, coming out victorious. A really great weekend. Until next time, Luke Russell – Ludus Lounge Bar.

Beauty

Candy Shop Pastels

WITH JENNIE FREEDLAND

Head of Make-Up for Liverpool Fashion Week and Lifestyle Monthly’s Beauty Editor

Wow

, it’s April already! How did it get here so fast??? This means new spring colours, Easter holidays, the Grand National and a whole calendar of events ready and waiting. We’ve just had the Wirral Fashion Festival (which was a wonderful evening for those that missed it) showcasing some truly gorgeous pieces that I am definitely eyeing up for the wardrobe……… I frequently get requests for “How To’s”, particularly when it’s a new trend that can seem to scary if you don’t use colour much on a day-to-day basis. So this month here is a step by step on two of the looks that I designed for Wirral Fashion Festival using pastel green and lilac. To begin with you need to prepare your skin, this look calls for light and radiant bases, I recommend either Dior’s Diorskin Nude or L’Oreal’s new Lumiere foundations (both have amazing reflective primers that will work with any foundation). Apply a light layer and build where you need more cover- less is more with this look, then follow with concealer if required. For the eyes a shadow primer is required, as this will help to keep the colours in place and stop any creasing, my personal favourite is Urban Decay’s Eye shadow primer potion. Apply the primer over the whole of the eye from lash line to brow bone, then using a large flat brush apply a neutral, matte colour as a base. This step is the same for both colours. First up the pastel green- you apply a soft pastel mint green across the eyelid from corner to corner and just bring it up slightly above the socket, then with a soft brighter green go along the lash line and the socket approximately 1/3 way in. Then taking a soft large brush (MAC’s 227 is always good for this) blend, blend, BLEND. This will give you a really soft but eye popping effect. I finished the eyes with a liner in green (Barry M’s no.20) along both upper and lower lash lines and smudged, lashings of black mascara completes the eyes and not forgetting to define the brows. Next the purple - same guidelines but this time using lilac (Sleek do a gorgeous palette called i-divine that has a really pretty lilac colour in with a slightly darker shade to contrast in). For the liner I used Barry M’s no. 15, but this time to give it an edgier feel take a black liner along the upper inside rim aswell. Again finish with black mascara. To finish these looks off you need to keep the cheeks soft and youthful. Benefit’s ‘Hervana’ is a gorgeous blusher with just the right amount of shimmer in, however, I have discovered a fantastic alternative for those that struggle to afford the £23.50 price tag of the Benefit blushers, MUA’s mosaic blush in ‘English Rose’ at a budget busting £2.50. I have found that there is no difference between the two products apart from the price and the MUA blusher gives a beautiful finish. Now for the lips……. a candy cane toned Barbie pink is the way to go and lends a pop of colour that isn’t in your face. For those that think they can’t wear pink try a gloss instead but you will be pleasantly surprised. So an easy way to wear to this spring/summer’s pastels on your eyes, you can change the colours for baby blue, turquoise, lemon aswell if you’re feeling brave! I can always be contacted for further advice and help through Twitter @jenniefreedland, Facebook- jennie mua freedland and Email- lifestylemonthlymakeup@gmail.com Enjoy your makeup wherever you go this month!!

we sell are the worlds finest selection being very well known brands from very well known suppliers such as Hair By Sleek, Sensationnel, Outré and more. We are constantly looking for new brands to extend our range but will only stock the best quality products.

What makes real hair a better product?

There are many different types of hair extensions. You can start from the basics with synthetic hair which is ideal for that one night out scenario but it’s not great. Then you can go for European hair which is mid quality range ideal for clip-ins. Then there is Remy, Brazilian and Russian hair which are the Rolls Royce of hair extensions. The high end range of Remy cuticle correct hair really is your best bet as you are guaranteed that it will last so much longer.

A CUT ABOVE THE REST Entrepreneur Mark Rogers set up Laura’s Hair World in Birkenhead and is sponsoring the Wirral Fashion Festival and Liverpool Fashion Week 2012. Why did you set up Laura’s Hair world?

I first set up Laura’s hair world in May 2008. Working in retailing hair extensions previously, I had gained a lot of knowledge of them. I decided that selling hair extensions was something that I really enjoyed doing and having sold them in Liverpool realised how many consumers we had coming over to Liverpool from the Wirral and quickly realised that there was obviously a huge gap in the Market for hair extension suppliers on the Wirral. Hence me setting up my own retail shop supplying the Wirral girls their hair extensions.

Why the name?

Well this is a question that gets asked a lot. So many people say why not ‘Mark’s Hair World’ but it just doesn’t have the same ring. I used to work in Liverpool selling the extensions with Laura who gave me all the knowledge I needed about hair extensions and she also helped me out so much in setting the business up. To this day she still has such a big influence on the business and I really couldn’t of done it without her.

What is your background?

I have always wanted to own my own business from when I was in school, so I left school as soon as I could at 16 and went into full time employment. I progressed through from being a retail assistant to supervisor, then went on to being a retail manager and then to store manager. Once I was sure that I had gained all the experience that I needed to start working for myself I went ahead and opened Laura’s Hair World.

Why are your products so special?

At Laura’s Hair World we have worked through 4 hard years to understand the products that we sell constantly expanding our range and services that we offer. I am now confident that all the brands of hair extensions that

You are the no 1 supplier in the Wirral, how did you achieve this?

Well it hasn’t been an easy ride! Competition is a huge factor in the hair extension industry. There are a number of reasons why Laura’s Hair World is the Wirral’s leading supplier such as we sell the biggest range of extensions on the Wirral, we have exclusivity of certain well known brands, we are open late night till 9pm monday to Friday, we have sun beds and beauty rooms on site. We also sell many other lines such as hair pieces, wigs, handbags/purses, makeup, jewellery and much more. This really makes us ‘The One Stop Beauty Shop’. We also now have a sister company called ‘Haylen’s Halo LTD’ which is our wholesale part of the business, which is strictly trade only.

What are your plans for expanding the business this year?

Well we have just had a major expansion within the business of opening our wholesale side of the business ‘Haylen’s Halo LTD’ which is now supplying many salons within the Wirral area. The next potential expansion on my business is to introduce and import my own brand of 100% Human Hair Extensions, but this is a really big step for us and is going to take time but I am working on it.

What do you love about your job?

I love meeting new people all the time. I get to meet so many people whether it’s customers, suppliers, reps. I also really enjoy helping the girls decide on which hair extensions they are going to go for, it gives me great pleasure in being able to supply them with their new hair as for some of them it’s such a big, exciting time. It’s like going to buy a new car lol.

Tell us about a day in your life.

No matter whether am in the shop or at home the business is always my priority. As the shop doesnt open till 10am I have plenty of time in the morning to make sure I have got everything planned for the day. Through the day I will either work in the shop, go to see suppliers, be doing paperwork or sometimes just spoil myself. I always have to remember though that the shop closes at 9pm which means whatever am doing has to be dropped to go and close up for the day.

THE EFFORTLESS GENTLEMAN

It’s about time us men were a little more informed, and by us I mean the everyday bloke. Often forgotten about when it comes to the latest trends but easily referenced to on fashion faux pas.

Find Your Style Everyone is different. From personality to profession, choose what suits you, what’s practical and what you like. Nothing is worse than feeling uncomfortable. Choose something that you will look forward to wearing, and get your moneys worth! Once you have found the style you are after make a little extra effort in finding new ideas along the lines of your taste. I like to take pictures on my phone from magazines, television and pictures on the web during the day; it’s perfect if your memory is as bad as mine! Later I will re-create the look and maybe search Google images for paparazzi shots of the celebrity to find more of similar styles – Its worth knowing that these celebrities are paying big money for a professional stylist to choose their outfits, so take advantage and steal their knowledge! Select carefully and your clothes will last you more than just this season… Take the Harrington Jacket for example…

Individually some of the coolest icons of the past 60 years. From top left, James Dean, Steve McQueen, Jason Statham, Elvis, Pharrell, Noel Gallagher. All wearing the Harrington jacket. A perfect example of a classic piece that you won’t get tired of!

I am here to help, regardless of whether you realise you need it! I have no qualifications in fashion nor do I hold any long term role in the industry. In fact just a year ago today I was in a factory wearing steel toe capped boots and a hard hat…But astonishingly I land myself in a position working with some of fashions leading designers, stylists and brands quite literally overnight. Having the chance to travel the world and work alongside such people has sparked an interest into something I never thought socially acceptable for a young man of my position, and that something is clothing. I now consider myself in a position to pass on the little gems of advice that I pick up on a daily basis. And I am not talking about the help given by most men’s fashion magazines – the ones showing you great outfits that cost an

My life has changed! I recently won a wardrobe consultation with Chameleon Image Consultancy. I’m a bit of a hoarder so when Steph came to my house, i though she was going to have a bit of a chore on her hands! It took her almost 4 hours to organise me and she managed to persuade me to get rid of about 20 pairs of shoes that I would definitely never wear again, and I now have a perfectly organised, colour co-ordinated wardrobe. Mornings are much simpler now! I was invited on a tour of the Transform Cosmetic Surgery clinic based in the Blundellsands area and to experience some of the non-surgical treatments available at the clinic. I am greeted by one of the country’s most renowned

Fashion

cosmetic surgeons Mr Lee Martin who specialises in breast surgery and is also the Clinical Director for Breast Services at Aintree Hospital. I was given a thorough consultation by Patient Care Coordinator, Charlotte Hoare and then introduced to the clinic’s Senior Practitioner Paula Ferro, who has worked exclusively for Transform at their Liverpool and Cheshire clinics for 5 years. I opt to have my nasolabial lines treated first with a dermal filler. I’m over the moon with the results, my lines being plumped out make’s me look younger and fresher instantly!

offices. For anyone who hasnt been the tournament is held at Calderstones Park from the 21st - 24th June and is a great day out for all the family, corporate hospitality is available as well, and Lifestyle magazine will be there! Finally, I have started training with Chris Brown at bootcamp on Wirral, I never thought I’d say it but I actually don’t mind getting up at 6am to go. I’m sure I wont be saying that in the winter though. I’ve already lost 7 pounds and 7 inches in just over 2 weeks. Long may this continue!

Gourmet Coffee has become my second office, since my office is located in Martins Bank building, its so handy to hold meetings there, that coupled with the fact they do free toast in the morning with your tea, and i’ve just discovered they serve alcohol as well, what more do you need! Myself and a business associate went to the launch of the Liverpool Tennis Tournament at PH Creative’s fabulous new

SAVE THE PLANET A STITCH AT A TIME Have you ever looked into your wardrobe and wondered how you’ve managed to collect so many clothes? Are you ever going to wear that pair of jeans you bought two years ago, or that jacket which has never been off its hanger? Hoarding clothes is something a lot of us do – we’ve tried them on, we’ve bought them, it’s hard to let go – even if they don’t fit anymore!

The fabrics are shredded and reprocessed into new items, which is much better than them sitting in a landfill site generating methane, which contributes to climate change.

Huge amounts of clothing end up in landfill every year, an unnecessary expense for you and for the environment. But instead of stressing over storage, there are things you can do to de-clutter your house.

Most importantly, next time you go clothes shopping ask yourself if you’re really going to wear what you buy, or will it end up gathering dust at the back of your closet.

First and foremost, if the clothes are in good condition, then chances are somebody else will be happy to wear them. If this is the case, then offer them to friends and family, chances are they’ll get more use out of the items than you do. Alternatively, a local charity shop will always be glad to take quality items from you. If you can’t get to a local shop, a lot of charities have textiles banks at supermarket car parks. Some charities also make door-to-door collections, as do some local councils, so check what services you get at home. If you’ve got worn-out clothes that have seen better days then you’ll probably be

42

better off recycling them – even a sock with a hole in is worth recycling. Your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre will have special textile containers that accept all sorts of clothes and footwear.

Turn Your Clothes into Cash and Help Beat Kids’ Cancer UK’s leading cancer charity, Cancer Research UK, is partnering with brands-for-less retailer TK Maxx for the fifth time for the UK’s biggest clothes collection, raising valuable funds for research into beating kids’ cancers. Launched in 2004, Give Up Clothes for Good asks everyone in the UK to clear out their wardrobes and be part of the biggest clothing collection ever. Supported by celebrities and shoppers across the country, Give Up Clothes For Good has already raised a staggering £6 million worth of donations funding vital research into kids’ cancers and aims to raise a further £2.5 million for groundbreaking research by the end of 2012. “More children than ever are surviving cancer thanks to the work of Cancer Research UK but it is still the most common cause of death from illness in children* in the UK. All the money raised from this campaign will help fund research into children’s cancers and each bag donated could be worth up to £30 for Cancer Research UK,” said Simon Ledsham, Trading Director, Cancer Research UK.

“We’re urging all our customers and employees to please drop off your unwanted clothing at your local TK Maxx store and help us beat kids’ cancer for good,” said Jody Walker, Director, TK Maxx. In the 1960s, only around 1 in 4 children with cancer survived. Today, almost 3 in 4 survive and Cancer Research UK is at the heart of this huge progress. But there’s still more work to do to help beat kids’ cancer for good. The campaign, shot by top portrait photographer Jason Bell, runs from 1st-30th April 2012 with special donation bags available free in all TK Maxx stores from late March. However, any bag will do - from bin bags to supersize carrier bags. For more details on how to support the campaign, please visit www.tkmaxx.com Issue date: January 2012

go on so much more into your private life more and more now! Almost too much.

Lifestyle talks to...

Anthony Scott Lee What are you up to at the moment?

I'm putting together my UK club Tour which starts in Liverpool on the 4th April and I'll be travelling up and down the country Djing all over, I'm also working a lot in the studio, putting together some very cool summer tracks which will be released later in the year.

Tell us about your DJing style

Although my DJ style has evolved over the last 8 years since I started Djing. It’s has always been based around just good dance music, party tunes! But I also like to play a mix of other genres, RnB, Hip hop especially in London. It depends on what the crowd are feeling and what venue I'm playing at. When I Dj'd at 'Pacha' My music style was house music with the big Ibiza tunes too!

Who is your audience?

Going to Ibiza for the first time when I was 18, gave me that clubbing buzz! so I would say my audience is anyone who loves to go out, loves a good party and pretty much wants to dance all night… lol

What do you love about the music you play?

I update my music every week, there are so many tracks out there which are good but I'm always on the look out to find that one tune which you think… ' wow, I can't wait to play this out tonight and see the crowds 50

Tell us about a typical day in

your life I work a lot in recording studios with other Dj's, singers etc… So on a typical day, before I start a long session I find out first thing exactly what gig I have on that night and where. There's been quite a few times I've got so into a recording session, I've completely got lost in the time and been a tad late for the gig. Being organised might be helpful too, which sometimes I'm not. lol reaction' It could be a new release or it could be a remix from a classic.

Tell us about the STEPS reunion and your role With

Steps launching their first UK Arena tour in 10 years, it promises to be bigger and better than anything they done before. Lisa put forward a great idea to do a mix up of her tracks for her performance, so it will be exciting to hear that played out to crowds at the arena's. I've had a sneak preview of the rehearsals and Steps fans are going to love it. I can't give away to much but they will be performing all the old Steps anthems from the past, there will also be some exciting individual performances as well so watch this space……

What burning ambition have you yet to fulfill? I Dj'd for 4 months over in Australia last summer, I would love to do a US Tour!

Are you a spender or a saver?

I'm a Spender, I live for the moment! You never know whats round the corner so you might as well enjoy today!

What is your biggest splurge to date?

I love my gadgets, so I splash out 10 grand on new recording studio equipment whilst I popped out at lunch time, lol

What are your plans for the summer..

If you could do anything again what would it be?

It would be great to perform at Wembley arena again, but next time Djing to 10,000 people

I'll be travelling back and forth to Ibiza this summer as well as continuing to play at events and clubs throughout the UK, I'm also going to be heading back over to Italy to play there the end of summer, I just played over there for the Venice Annual Ball 2012 which was incredible!

What is your proudest achievement?

Will you be coming to Liverpool Fashion Week?

It has to be releasing 2 singles into the UK Top 20 and getting to number 10 & 16… Its definitely up there!

Would you do another reality tv show and if so which one? I don't think I would do another reality TV show… We did 'Totally Scott-Lee' on MTV which was 5 years ago. There are so many reality TV shows out there at the moment and it seems the shows

Yes, Im actually in talks to put together the music for one of the catwalk shows, Liverpool is big with fashion, so finding the right tracks to put together with the models as they come out on the catwalk is exciting. I'm really happy to be apart of the Liverpool Fashion Week.

BRITISH LUNG FOUNDATION – Breathe Easy The Breathe Easy network across Liverpool provides support, information and friendship to people affected by a lung condition and those who look after them. It is part of the British Lung Foundation, which is the only charity working for everyone affected by lung disease. “Breathe Easy Groups” give people with a lung condition a place to share stories and encourage one another and the group is run entirely by volunteers. The Breathe Easy network in North Liverpool has recently started a “Tai Chi” class with instructor William Woodfine, pictured here with the group. This has been a huge success with many of the group taking part and really getting involved. There are wide range of activities that include a variety of speakers on medical and general topics, as well as social events, outings and much more. The British Lung Foundation Liverpool North Breathe Easy Group meets at Fazakerley Memorial Hall Low Lane, L9 7AH from 1pm-3pm every Friday. It is free to attend and if you would like to attend a local meeting or find out more about the Breathe Easy network or your lung condition please contact the Liverpool Office on 0151- 224- 7778. Liverpool is also home to the British Lung Foundation National Helpline 03000 030 555 who offer confidential advice and support for anyone affected by lung disease.

‘Friends has been over for nearly 10 years but it feels like it doesn’t ever end,” Says 27 year old General Manager of the new Central Perk Steve Trimby. Everywhere you go there are big fans. It is, somewhat astonishingly, nearly 20 years since the pilot episode introduced six twenty something New Yorkers, who spent the next decade coupling and decoupling, occasionally doing some paid employment, and drinking an awful lot of coffee. And yet, though its last new episode was shown in 2004, this is the show that will not die. Friends is everywhere. With a multichannel TV and a bit of flipping it is still possible to watch an episode at least 12 times a day on British TV. Last year, 256,000 copies of the complete 10-season box set were sold in the UK. With all this in mind fans will be over the moon to know that later this month, April 20th to be precise Liverpool will have their very own slice of the big apple. Located on Hatton Garden Liverpool this is going to be one place all coffee lovers will have to visit. With an all American menu with loads of goodies you can only get at Central Perk, sourced from the USA, coffee breaks will never be the same again. See www.central-perk.co.uk for more info.

Impact Security Solutions and Luv 2 Let Frank Jackson the Operations Director from Impact Security Solutions and Paul Massey the Luv 2 Let Managing Director have put together a security process to try and ensure that vacant properties are inspected on a weekly basis thus giving the landlord piece of mind whilst their property is empty. In essence a mobile response officer from Impact Security Solutions will visit vacant properties that are managed by Luv 2 let. Upon arrival, the response officer will complete an external patrol of the property looking for evidence of graffiti, damage to windows, doors, guttering, missing roof tiles, etc. The response officer will then enter the premises and check that there are no burst pipes, water leaks, or any other internal damage, finally the officer will take the meter readings, and secure the premises. have had a lot of offers, the festival culture over here is great, we love it. It’s way different from the US, it’s a whole musical tradition over here, with so many festivals going on all summer, and you guys take the whole family and camp in a muddy field, and you don’t even care! Which is weird coz we did it first didn’t we, we had Woodstock, but you guys just took it and just ran with it, you’re very lucky.

Your first album in 2009 was critically acclaimed, is this one in the same style. What can listeners expect? Erm, the music is the same style, the songs are shorter and this album has been done more as a band rather than a collaboration which was what the last album was.

What’s it like opening and touring with Bryan Ferry? And how did that relationship come about? I guess it’s amazing, he’s a really gracious host, we toured the US with them on their bill, for every night for three weeks. He would announce us and thank us each night. We had done a remix for him off his new record we he loved it and it snowballed from there.

ongratulations on your second album “Form and Control” which has just been released, how’s it going? Thanks, it’s going really well so far, it’s been a long time coming, it’s been finished for a while now, but the release date has been pushed back twice, so it’s really cool to get it finally out there and take it on the road in the UK!

As you and Sean are the brains behind the outfit, doing the writing and producing yourselves, how did you meet? The brains behind the outfit, ooh I like that! We met through Sean’s sister who was a Go Go dancer at this club in New York, Sean had just started DJaying there, and he was playing all these amazing records that I’d never heard before, mostly way out Brazilian, and then I’d play him something he hadn’t heard because he was mostly into Brazilian stuff. And then we had this, like, interdependence on each other. We were, like, DJaying with each other and working on stuff together and then we started producing stuff together.

Is it very different touring in the U.K rather than the states? Are the audiences different? Oh yeah It’s a lot different, people in the US didn’t really know us so the venues are really small and the audiences were quiet, but over here people already know us, they are singing along with the music and really getting involved and into the show, which is really great!

You recently have had a gig in Liverpool. What was the vibe? We love Liverpool, the city and the people. This is our third visit to the city and the famous Parr street studios. Fingers crossed we might have the chance Are you planning on doing any festivals over here after the show to go and explore and enjoy some cold tap beer! this summer? Oh definitely, we’re still nailing down the details, we 54

mystery surrounding the event which is adding to the anticipation! “Sea Odyssey will be a seminal event for the city and it was important that half of the action should take place in North Liverpool – brining a long lasting legacy to the area as a result of the area being placed in such a unique spotlight.

The giants are coming! G

iant fever is taking over the city as Liverpool gets ready to welcome two very special visitors in April.

Expected to be the UK’s biggest street theatre event in 2012, Sea Odyssey is a magical story of how the human spirit triumphs over tragedy. Taking centre stage will be the 30 foot tall Little Girl Giant, and towering above will be her 50 foot tall uncle who will explore areas of the city in a moving story of love, family and communication.

“It will be a staggering piece of theatre, the likes of which many people will never have seen before and will once again showcase Liverpool’s outstanding credentials when it comes to mass participation, outdoor events.” Residents and visitors are advised that due to the scale of the event, there may be some disruption as a result of road closures. To see the full route and find out the latest news visit www.giantspectacular.com. And why not ‘Like’ the Giant Spectacular page on Facebook or follow Giant Spectacle on Twitter. Sea Odyssey has been produced by world renowned street theatre company Royal de Luxe (RDL). Artistic Director and founder of RDL, Jean-Luc Courcoult, visited Liverpool in 2006 and was inspired by an emotional letter he saw in the Merseyside Maritime Museum written by a young girl whose father was a passenger on the tragic maiden voyage of the Titanic. The Company has attracted audiences of around 9.6million to events in Nantes, Berlin, Santiago, Antwerp and Guadalajara.

The free event takes place from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 April and excitement is brewing for what is being predicted to be the most visually stunning spectacle to ever hit the city streets.

And, for the first time in the city’s event history, around half the action will focus on North Liverpool, with both giants exploring parts of Stanley Park, Anfield and Everton. It is hoped Sea Odyssey will be a transformational event for this part of the city, beginning to showcase the potential development and investment opportunities in an area which faces some of the greatest health and social inequalities in the country. The giants will also descend on the city centre, taking in areas such as Whitechapel, Victoria Street and the iconic waterfront. This is one of the most complex events ever staged by the city council and it’s estimated the event will attract an audience of around 250,000. Liverpool city council’s cabinet member for culture and tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “The excitement is mounting as we get closer to the date, even more so because there’s an air of

The Property PRO

with Julie West, Director of Zest Lets

A leading North West property agent believes the Government should launch a new affordable housing scheme in a bid to help first time buyers get on the property ladder.

Julie added: “Although NewBuy lowers the risks for lenders, it doesn’t help to reduce them for borrowers. If your home is repossessed and then sold at a loss, you will then be liable for any shortfall between the sale price and the mortgage. However, I don’t think it is enough and when you think about it, it’s not that helpful as it only applies to new builds - It's not a scheme that's going to change the housing market and I think it is there to support house builders rather than homebuyers.
