Note from our Award Winning Editor... As I write this column it’s raining again, but we won’t let that stop us enjoying our summer staycation. We have lots to celebrate this month, it’s our party to celebrate our 4th birthday; expect lots of party pictures next month and fingers crossed that the clouds will break and we get some of those sunny rays on us. It’s a music mad issue this month, with an exclusive interview with the Scissor Sisters back with a new album. We also speak to the Mersey Beatles, a tribute to one of the greatest bands ever as Liverpool celebrates 50 years of the Beatles. Here at Lifestyle magazine we don’t let the weather dampen our spirits. We’re looking forward to taking part in all the events around our region this month. There’s so much to keep us busy, and if you get wet you can always buy a Liverpool Fashion Week brolly from our website to not only keep you dry, but it will keep you well in fashion as well! DEV’S ARMY The Lantern Theatre, Liverpool

Award winning play Dev’s Army makes a welcome return following a hugely successful premiere 2011 tour. The intriguing dark comedy by established writer Stuart D Lee will be showing at The Lantern Theatre, Liverpool on Saturday 7 July at 7.30pm.

Liverpool Cathedral asks photographers to ‘capture the character’ of Liverpool Liverpool Cathedral’s annual photography competition has been launched – and judges are asking participants to ‘capture the character’ of Liverpool on the theme of Liverpool Life The panel is made up of Mike McCartney (Chair), Martin Birchall (Awardwinning former Echo photographer), Dr Laura MacCulloch (Curator of British Art, National Museums Liverpool) and renowned Liverpool artist Anthony Brown. This year’s competition has two categories ‘Life in the Hope Street Area’ and ‘Life in the City Centre’, with both categories accepting junior (under 17) and adult entries. Participants are allowed to enter both categories. Following last year’s success, the People’s Winner category returns; all entries will be displayed in the Cathedral between 13-16th September and the public will be asked to vote for their favourite. The competition closes on Friday 28th August (5pm) and all entries will go on display at the Cathedral between 22nd September – 28th October 2012. Prizes include hotel stays, theatre tickets, and a one-to-one photography tutorial from one of our judges. To inspire budding photographers, between July 21st and September 16th, the Cathedral will also exhibit two paintings of Liverpool life on loan from the Walker Art Gallery. The paintings of Bold Street and St John’s Market, by Charles Trevor Prescott (1890-1942), have been selected for their honest reflection of life in Liverpool in the Victorian period. A charming, thought provoking Irish comedy, the story is set in 1940 when the Republic of Ireland remained neutral in WW2. Through the lives of three normal men, caught up in the wretched drama that was Ireland’s attempt to defend its shores, their prejudices are challenged. The subtleties of Irish allegiances are explored when the local defence volunteers discover ‘a body on the beach’ - nothing is as black and white as we think when it’s coloured green. NEWS & EVENTS

- dive in the ice cream’s just dolphinicious! The Wirral’s award winning Caffe Cream is creating a wave of support for local dolphins and marine life with its latest ice cream flavour ‘Aquamarine’. The growing family business, based at New Brighton Promenade, Wallasey, has created an ice cream that looks just like rippling waves and surf – and tastes of candy floss, marshmallow and all things summer holiday!

The new venue for this year's event is Victoria Park and promises a fun-packed weekend for all the family. The Crazy Bears will be returning and other entertainment for the younger members of the family include a climbing wall, kids craft tent, land train rides, face painting, quad bikes, slides, donkey rides, fairground and water buoys. There will also be Morris dancing and Laurel and Hardy look-alikes will also be spotted around the show ground along with an Elvis look-a-like. Other highlights include, for the first time, two Spitfire aircraft, which will be on static display and the worldfamous Vander Brothers will be bringing the new ‘Quad Wheels of Death’ and the first female performer. There will also be martial arts displays. The rally continues to offer visitors a wide range of attractions including vintage and veteran cars, military jeeps and motorbikes, classic and vintage motorcycles and motorcycle clubs, model boats, model car racing, model railways and stationary engines. There will also be a wide number of rock and jazz bands, a band stand with 60s music, a vehicle restoration workshop, auto jumble, car boot, flight simulator, creative crafts and gifts, trade stands and food outlets. Tickets in advance, which are valid for both days, have also been frozen and cost £25 for family, £10 for adults, £5 for children, at £8 for OAPs. A free bus service will operate from Chapel Street railway station to Victoria Park. Advance tickets are available from Southport TIC and for further information or to book camping call 0844740 9172 or visit www.woodvalerally.com.

And, for every scoop sold, Caffe Cream will be donating 10p to the marine research charity Sea Watch which works to conserve whales, dolphins and porpoises around the UK coast. Sea Watch also hosts the National Whale and Dolphin Watch which is being held on July 27-29th, and will include watches from the New Brighton Promenade and Blackpool which members of the public are invited to join. Caffe Cream was set up in January with a commitment to Fair Trade products such as sugar and coffee, sustainability and great tasting foods. Amongst the first to give Aquamarine a try was Sea Watch coordinator Katrin Lohrengel who said: “ It really is dolphinicious – give it a try this summer and help us to help the UK’s dolphins and whales.” Caffe Cream Manager Shane Osborne said: “It was not until local Sea Watch co-ordinator Katrin Lohrengel started coming in for a coffee after holding watches on the Promenade and we got talking that I realised just how much marine life there is right outside the front door here – off the Wirral! “Ice cream is one of our specialities. We make all the ice cream on site and, along with traditional flavours, we create seasonal and unusual tastes. Aquamarine uses our candy floss ice cream, one of our most popular flavours, mixed with a ‘warm ice cream ‘ with a marshmallow texture to represent the surf, and it is already going down well with our customers!” It’s already been a busy sea watching season for Katrin, who says: “ This summer we have been recording harbour porpoise off New Brighton and bottlenose dolphins further north off Blackpool. Sea Watch’s research helps develop effective conservation policies, so the more Aquamarine ice cream you eat, the more you will be helping the UK’s dolphins!” To take part in The National Whale and Dolphin Watch www.seawatchfoundation. org.uk You can also support Sea Watch by adopting a dolphin at www.adoptadolphin.org.uk

CELEBRITY INTERVIEW

SCISSOR SISTERS

by Joy Lewis The pop world has just got a fabulous injection of glamorous, disco-y fun with the Scissor Sisters fourth studio album Magic Hour released in the U.K on 28th May. The album is jam packed full of electro goodness with a touch of sexiness thrown in for good measure. So grab yourself a giant disco ball and hit the dance floor for their latest incarnation of theatrical flair. I caught up with Scott Hoffman aka Babydaddy the bands instrumentalist, here’s what he had to say……………….. Hi Babydaddy firstly congrats on the new album, it’s fantastic! Where did the title of the album come from? Well that’s a story right there! Strangely enough this time we had a really tough time, the first album, that was really easy, we just named it after ourselves but this time it took ages. We almost gave up and called it Scissor Sisters 4, but in the end it was Jakes mom Freda who named it, we kept phoning her up and saying “come on help us out here!” In the end she suggested Magic Hour, we loved it. So next time are you just going to straight to her? Oh yeah why not, why waste time right? We’re just going to go straight to the awesome source. What’s been your inspiration for this album? We came into the studio and got together to decide the mood of the album. We wanted something really emotional that brought together the philosophy of the band. Summer time, good times, magical twilight, happiness and a good old dance. So we then set to trying to mix all those emotions together, and I think we managed it. I’m really pleased with the result. Do you have a favourite track? That’s the problem every day I have a new one, I switch favourites all the time, but I’ve done this on every album we’ve made. So today I’d say it’s track 10, Best In Me, but you could ask me tomorrow or the next day and I’ll give you a different answer! Which is good right? It means I like the whole album. The 6th track on your album is called Let’s have a KiKi, so I have to ask, what’s a Kiki? It’s a party! It’s a little party with your friends it’s a good time. Me and you, we’re having a Kiki right now just laughing together and getting along! Everyone should have a Kiki at least once a day! I read that the band met in the New York club scene around the millennium, where are your current fave party locations? I’m not so much of a party animal any more in fact my absolute favourite place to hang out is my apartment with Jake playing video games, having a Kiki! We’re playing Mass Effect 3 right now which is great. I’m a real gamer I have every type of console so I don’t miss out on a single game! But, if we have to go out then I’d say Horse Meat Disco, it’s the best disco in the world and it’s right here in London, but I think it travels round and I know it’s going to 12

Liverpool this summer, you should check it out! Your self-titled album scissor sisters from 2004 is one of the biggest selling albums of the 21st century, everybody has it on their iPod, how does this affect your approach to writing new albums? Well, we realise that there are all kinds of factors and elements of good luck and good timing in what we do. With the first album we just always seemed to have good luck on our side and we always seemed to find ourselves at the right place at the right time. So every new album we try not to look back too much and look forward instead. We try not to overthink it and just try a bunch of new things. We wanted to create another great album that we like and that we are proud of and hope that others agree with us. We try not to overthink it and just try a bunch of new things. Your look is described as “alternative” is this how you view yourselves? Alternative to bankers, we definitely don’t like to dress like those bankers! I have a style of my own, it’s tough to stand out, especially in the music business, no matter what your sound is they want you to fit in a box, they want you to look like everybody else. But we’re sticking to our guns,

Just keep dancing... we’re proud of the way we look; it’s effortless because to us it’s natural. In the past you said it was fun being in the scissor sisters, is it still fun? Oh yeah it still feels fun. But it is a job because I take it seriously and you have to take your job seriously, right? The way I see it I have the funnest, bestest job in the world. I’m a real lucky guy. Are you doing any of the UK festivals this year? I think we’re doing the Wickerman festival up in Scotland, but that’s it for this year, we did a few last year but this year we’re spending our time touring and promoting the album. Next year we’re planning to do quite a few, but I don’t know which yet, Glastonbury would be good. Are you still bigger here and in Europe than back home in the states? This is our home now, we love the U.K this is our home this is where we were signed this is where people believe in us. We’re a U.K band. 80’s style electric pop has become really cool now, how does it feel to have started the resurgence? Did we start it or is the timing of the return of 80’s electric

pop a coincidence? Who knows I definitely like to think we had a hand in it. But some people say we’re more like 70’s disco so in that case we had nothing to do with it!!! With the rise of digital music sales how do you see the future holding for albums? Your right I do keep wondering whether people even listen to albums any more. Certainly not as much. But I do think albums are going to continue into the future. It is an important medium for us and still is for a lot of people. Music is always changing and we’ll change along with it. I think when people already like a band they will want to buy the whole album. Where in the UK are you touring? And more importantly are you coming to Liverpool!!! We love Liverpool we have spent time partying there in the past. But no we’re not coming to Liverpool, yet. But before you complain we will do in the future but we want to wait and do a big gig there, maybe in that new arena of yours. That’s all for now Babydaddy thank you, Thank you Joy from Lifestyle Monthly Magazine, I’ll keep an eye out for you and remember readers, Keep on Dancing! MONTHLY 13 LIFESTYLE

RESTAURANT REVIEWS

It was a quiet Thursday lunchtime when I met up with good friend Pete Price. We sat in the window as people stared in recognition at Pete. “They’re saying, “I thought he was gay” he laughs at me, as we catch up on our busy lives. Bellini was the perfect setting for this, there is a feeling of space and calm as we looked through the menu. As well as a la carte there was the specials and also the quick lunch time two course set meal for shoppers or business people who want good quality food at very affordable prices. For antipasta I had the asparagi gratinati; oven baked asparagus served with butter and parmesan. It was exquisite. Pete chose the beef carpaccio; age primed fillet of beef dressed with rocket leaves, parmesan shavings and extra virigin olivie oil. In addition it was sprinkled with truffle shavings which the chef actually hand picked himself when he went home to Italy on a recent visit. “He does it all the time, “ our waiter explains, “ he brings back kilos of them, he goes out with his dog and they search for the best.” Pete admitted they certainly tasted special. For mains Pete had the halibut from the specials board while I chose the battuta di manzo; sirloin steak, cooked exactly to my specification and served with rocket and parmesan shavings, with garlic spinach and french fries on the side. It was superb. so much so that Pete knocked on the window to passers by and encouraged them to come inside. A couple did and booked for dinner that night, we know they made a wise choice. As always when I am with Pete, time passes way too quickly. Added to the great company was the excellent food which made up for a very enjoyable afternoon which I didn’t want to end. Top marks for fantastic service, beautifully presented food with the taste living up to expectations. It’s well worth a regular visit.

Liligo.... the travellers search engine Who are we?

What is liligo.com?

It’s a new kind of Internet animal: a travel search engine. liligo.com instantly searches all available flights, hotel rooms, car hires & trains on an exhaustive number of travel sites such as agencies, major and low-cost airlines and tour-operators. You can easily narrow down your search as much (or as little!) as you want. That means that if the trip you'd like is anywhere out there, you'll find it right away. Click on your choice, and you'll go directly to the travel supplier site to book.

How is liligo.com different from others in the travel jungle?

You can recognize liligo.com by what it doesn’t do: it doesn’t sell you anything. We’re neither an online travel agency, nor an airline, nor a tour-operator. These all have a stock to sell. But liligo.com is entirely at your command. We search all the sites you know and many you’ve probably missed — such as the vast unexplored territory of low-cost airlines. After all, you have better things to do. We don’t.

Why should I trust liligo.com?

liligo.com has no hidden agenda. Certain travel “comparison” sites confuse comparing flights with selling them. They do everything to steer you to their partner sites. All liligo.com does is search; we don’t care what flight you choose. But we do care about being the most objective, exhaustive and useful travel search engine around. That’s why we don’t play favorites and your results are always transparently listed according to total price -- all taxes and fees included. That’s also why we’re constantly developing innovative tools like the Low-cost Combo, the Buzz and Search Filter to let you tailor your search in ways you’ve only dreamed of.

How does liligo.com survive?

Travel agencies and airline companies remunerate liligo.com for the general service of helping people to see their offers. Like most search engines, Liligo also makes a living through sponsored ads that are clearly indicated by an icon. But we stand by our promise: you’ll never have to pay for using liligo.com

Where does liligo.com come from?

liligo.com is a website created by Findworks Technologies, a project founded by Pierre Bonelli in 2005, financed by its founders and external investors. The team, consisting of around 40, is passionate about both technology and travelling so developing the best travel search engine on the web just comes naturally.

info-liligo@mail.com www.liligo.co.uk Office address: Liligo Avenida El Califa Codigo Postal: 29660 Nueva Andalucia: Malaga 1) TOTAL ACCESS For every trip,lilago.com promises to search the greatest number of travel sites. In order to provide you with a maximum of relevant travel solutions, we are continuously adding travel agencies, tour operators and airlines (major and low cost) to the list of sites we search 2)UNBIASED INFORMATION Liligo.com promises to search and show results in all objectivity. We order flight results transparently from the least to the most expensive with no preferential treatment. Sponsored advertisements are clearly identified so as to never be confused with your search results. 3) MORE LOW COST CHOICES To guarantee that you'll always find the cheapest fares. We work especially hard to increase the number of lowcost airlines we search, and to make their offers more accessible with tools like the Low-cost Combo. 4) KNOWING WHAT YOU'D PAY The ticket price you see listed on liligo.com is exactly what you'll pay. All taxes and fees are included so that there are no surprises when you finally book with the supplier travel site. And of course, searching with liligo.com is completely free. 5) THE BEST OF SEARCH TECHNOLOGY Liligo.com promises to keep on innovating to improve your search experience. We know that one search doesn't fit all people of all trips, that is why we have developed new technology to help you tailor your search. We'll find the cheapest destinations, get great trip ideas from other searches and even compose the ultimate low-cost ticket. And we won't stop there. 6) THE POWER OF COMMUNITY Liligo.com empowers the traveller to benefit from community and promises to continue. We refuse to be a one-way search engine;liligo.com is interactive. For example our buzz tool enables you to search other users' searches for the best and cheapest trip ideas. We've also got forums and chats to help travellers share good advice. And of course the liligo.com team, is ready to respond to you within 28 hours. MONTHLY 23 LIFESTYLE

Vampire Face Lift

or.... The Lip Doct

he’s Fab!

What is the Vampire Face Lift The Vampire face lift is platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP). It is also known as “Dracula” facelift. It involves taking your own blood, putting the tube of blood in a machine called a centrifuge and spinning it. This separates the red blood cells leaving plasma, part of which is rich in platelets, and injecting this back into your face. Like many other treatments PRP was developed or medical uses then applied to cosmetic use. In hospitals PRP therapy has been used to improve healing of bone grafts, skin grafts, burns, scars etc. How does it work? The spun plasma that is injected back into you has a high concentration of platelets. Platelets play an important part in tissue healing as well as blood clotting. They release hotFrox-lifestyleAdvertPATHS:Layout 1 25/06/2012 20:31 Page 1

several growth factors responsible for tissue growth, collagen formation and new blood vessel growth. During the spinning process these growth factors are released and activated. When injected back into the skin they activated stem cells in the skin which grow into new tissue. What can you use it for? Injected into the skin it will help rejuvenation. Skin will appear visibly smoother and firmer and more radiant. Fine lines and wrinkes are improved. PRP can be mixed with dermal fillers to improve the results and make them last longer as a result of new collagen growth. Sun damaged skin in the neck, decolletage and backs of hands can be treated this way. Its a nice treatment for under the eyes and I’ve heard of practitioners injecting it into the scalp to promote hair growth, Scars can also be improved with PRP. Any problems? Apart from bruising and swelling you get from any injections, the answer is no. Injecting your own plasma back into you can do no harm. There is no risk of allergies or infections. PRP typically costs £500 a session (plus costs of any fillers if you want these as well). Treatment protocols vary so discuss any treatment plan with your practitioner. Results should last 12-18 months and an occasional refresher session is recommended.

A MILLION LIGHTS ALBUM REVIEW

T

he nation’s dimpled sweetheart Cheryl (apparently it’s just Cheryl now, you know like Madonna, Prince and the like) is back and in the form of her life with her 3rd album release “A Million Lights” There has been a lot of hype about this album as it is showcasing some of the world’s hottest pop producers. From teaming up with British rapper Wretch 32, to drafting in producers Jim Beanz, Naughty Boy and Beema Boys, this pick a mix of talent means we're hearing a slightly edgier Cheryl than we're used to but it does seem to work for her. I’m a big fan of Lana Del Rey, so I skipped straight to the song that she penned. I wasn’t let down. It’s a brilliantly written R&B track “Ghetto Baby” and for me, it is by far the best song on the album. The rest of the album ain’t too shabby either. A handful of the tracks have chart

success written all over them. Especially the opening number, “Under the Sun,” which is a good summer car song. “Screw you” has a fair bit of attitude and is full of bounce. Hard core Cheryl fans in particular will love this as it has a few thinly veiled references to ex hubby Ashley Cole. Other highlights include, “A Million Lights” and “Craziest Things” because after a couple of listens you will be hooked and singing along to them. OK so it might not be an epic, but on the whole it is bloody good. And when all said and done, if you are looking for an album full of Grade – A pop music to dance round the kitchen to then” A Million Lights” has that in spades. Cheryl’s, “A Million Lights” is released on 18th July.

Appearing at Liverpool Fashion Week 2012..... Why did you set up LAD? As a fashion conscious guy, there was never anything in the mainstream shops that really appealed to my taste. Wirral fashion blogger with a passion for fashion.. Liv Stringer is a vintage fashionista from the Wirral who currently runs her own blog http://filthfashion.tumblr. com/. Every month for Lifestyle magazine she will enlighten the readers about new fashion must haves combining vintage clothing with high street labels to create a quirky edgy style. Summer is here. I am definitely a summer girl and I relish in putting all of my winter coats and jumpers to the back of my wardrobe. For me summer means bright and bold and my wardrobe reflects this. This month I have been on the lookout for new quirky and quaint shops to inspire my summer wardrobe. I recently came across a clothing website from a local girl whose summer collection caught my eye. She sells a range of clothing from fast fashion labels such as Reverse and We Walk and a selection of mega vintage pieces. Being a vintage lover I was an immediate fan. One of the main reasons why I fell in love with her website was because she lives by her name-stylewardrobe. She uses her edgy fashion flare to show you how to team her vintage pieces with fashion labels. This personal touch can help the buyer style her clothing and inspire you when thinking of how to create an outfit. Love it. An instant buy for me was this vintage floral kimono with tails. I love how it can be dressed up or dressed down making it an accessible piece for all occasions. Here I have teamed it with white platform pumps from Topshop and a simple strapless black dress from Miss Selfridge. The bright colours and unique pattern definitely makes it a statement piece for the summer! To steal this style and get inspired for your summer wardrobe check out www.stylewardrobe.co.uk. She has a great collection of affordable clothing and if you love vintage and one of a kind items this website is a must. Enjoy!

ANGELA JAY Reaching out to the heart of the community....... Lifestyle Monthly welcomes Heart FM’s popular breakfast presenter as our regular columnist Hello, Busy ol month and not liking the start of the cold dark early mornings

boooo!! So I decided on the show every Friday will be fancy dress fun Fridays, an opportunity for us to mess around (like I did at school!) and dress up, I love it, Spence hates the idea!

Hope you have been enjoying the glorious and unglorious weather we have been having, this is our british summer!! My other half finally proposed so I haven’t stopped smiling and I am another year older, I am going backwards now! Team Heart have been busy as always on the Heart breakfast show with lots of celebs popping in. We find out what cheers up the bubbly Joanna Page on a down day, we find out why Jason Manford was a crocodile in Chester Zoo and why his stag was more like a hen…read on.

David Cameron said she brought joy to the nation, she certainly made us smile, Joanna Page (star of Gavin and Stacey) popped in for a chat. We asked what cheers her up- Joanna revealed that cheering herself up ‘’normally involves food- my favourite cake is pineapple slice so If James walks in with a pineapple slice and cup of tea and then if the dog sits on my lap and then we can watch the tele that’s nice, il share one with dog and il usually kiss her on the snout that will bring a smile to my face’’ cute, Joanna also went on to say ‘Buying a new pair shoes that always works’, I agreed, they just always fit even on fat days don’t they? Spence, my co-host, said she sounded all sweetness and light but has she ever done anything naughty? ‘I like to pull the professional dancers off the stage and somehow I think im better than them and dancedancing all night I think has to be there’’! So not that naughty then, although she did tell us that her friend’s boyfriend thought he was ‘so good on the dancefloor recently that he actually did the splits on the dancefloor then he couldn’t walk for next 3 days’! Personally I can’t and have never been able to do the splits, and no I am 34

COMEDY

JASON MANFORD Comedian Jason Manford, 31, recently popped into Heart FM's studio for a quick hilarious chat with our columnist, Angela Jay.....

How are you finding life as a family man with three young kids? Yes, it;'s ok, I have twin girls, two and a half and and 18 month as well... she's alright, I've not known her that long! No it's great, for the first time in my life, my job isn't the most important thing in my life

medal and thought, "that'll do me."

Have you taken them to chester zoo? Yes we went to chester zoo day after something happened on the telly, I don't know what it was but it was mental, people kept coming up to me and saying, " Oh can I get a picture?" I was like, "There's an elephant over there, i'm just a man." In the end i got to point too much with the kids so I got face painted as a crocodile and wandered around. I ended up not like me but a simple bloke and no one came near me, that was great.

Tell us about the Laugh Inn in Chester? Yeah, me and a couple of friends co own it. We have always been trying to find a comedy club to be circuit for a decade nd found this venue, it was an obvious place to do it in Chester as it's a good town and city, the people seem to get it. There are loads of students and people come for holiday and weekends, so seemed a good place to have it in, opposite the train station as well,so a great location

Do you come to Wales at all? I actually had my stag do outside Rhyll. I only had 2 days so I off hired a cottage with a hot tub and 12 blokes, it was a bit weird that. A mad welsh bloke took us paintballing, who I dont think had the proper licence he was absolutely bonkers but it was great. We ended up singing and drinking- actually it sounds a bit like a hen party ! Do you do go camping or glamping? When wrote book, my only holidays as kid up to the age of 17 was going to wales and in particular Butlins . Would I like to carry on the tradition with y kids? Er no, I don go any more, I am on the telly. It's not for me! I am not into it, I did the Duke of Edinburgh and got as far as the bronze

So you're 31 now? Yes I look older, everyone says I do, maybe because I had a tough paper round, or I am married and kids , having a mortgage and running about. Kids make you older, they don't look at me, they look at y hairline

Why did you want to open a comedy club? Because I am not coming up no new jokes, we have people like Jim Owen, one of my favourite comedians on. That's the great thing about having a club is that I am able to put on people i like. There's also Michael MacIntyre and John bishop is popping in. It's important to to tell people there are different acts and hundreds of comedians not on telly who are equally as good. As a comedian you must get asked all the time to make people laugh. It must be one of the hardest jobs to get up on stage. What do you say to them when they ask you to make them laugh? I tell them to buy a ticket. 39 LIFESTYLE

EVENT

Battlefield Paranormal Hailed as the biggest paranormal event in the UK, this has been organised by Liverpool psychic, Neil Munnerley and aims to be an annual event.

controlled observation of a given environment. If people are wondering about we could not varify that what people are hearing seeing or documenting to media would be paranormal. Plus there are already 135 people there. Health and safety would also become a serious issue as it is not designed to include the public. Are you hoping to include them in the future? Future events for battlefield paranormal could include chosen members of the public, chosen by magazines and media. Then it would have been inputted into the organization in advance. What is the significance of battlefields? Battlefields are the place of high amounts of energy. There is a theory that the energy produced at the time of death or great fear can be embedded upon an environment. This could there fore theoretically emanate its self within the frequencies we are observing within and maybe even show itself to the mediums and sensitives who are there. Which farm/land are you using? I can not disclose the farms who have allowed usage of there land as they wish to remain anomalous, but we do have access to the bulk of Marston Moor.

Battlefield Paranormal was the brainchild of Paul Reid who who sadly passed away last month with throat cancer. There are over 135 people taking part including paranormal experts, parapsychologists, mediums and paranormal investigators. Neil says, “The first problem was getting access to the land as it is owned by many farmers. The main area is owned by three. I visited the area and made contact with the farmers aftera brief phone call. Two were ok with the idea, although one put so many problems in the way, it would have been impossible to continue under those conditions. So I have built up the event based upon the two remaining areas, which includes a large area of ground from the actual battlefield and Cromwells clump on the hill.: I have organized for the teams to be placed in areas all around the Battlefield as a means of hopefully documenting and experiencing activity in those areas. Each team will have a note pad where they can document activity and I will later compile a timeline of events of the entire 10.30pm to 1.00am investigation. The event has taken an incredible 6 weeks to organise and is not open to the public. However, will be run as a means of raising money for Mac Millan nurses by way of pots will be available on the night. What do you hope to gain from this? It is hoped that we will document anomalous activity which will tie in directly with events from the pre battle environment. I am hoping by analyzing the data that I will find a flow of activity through out the environment by means of minute by minute timelines of events during the evening. These will be provided by 16 teams of paranormal investigators. Who are you hoping to contact? I have no idea who will be contacted? That will be dependent upon the mediums and the information they relay back to me post investigation. It could be soldiers or people who have been there before or since? Why would public be in the way? The public would get in the way due to it been a 42 MONTHLY LIFESTYLE

The Beatles 50th Anniversary! Mop tops at the ready, the 50th anniversary of the forming of The Beatles is to be celebrated in our fair city with a series of events that run throughout 2012. International Beatles Week will run from 22-28 August and will feature the world's biggest Beatles convention! At the heart of the tributes this year is the tribute band the Mersey Beatles. They are playing at a very special concert at The Epstein theatre, Liverpool, on 10th November 2012. The Neptune, as it used to be called, was refurbished & renamed in honour of The Beatles manager Brian Epstein. I caught up with Steve (Paul McCartney), one of the Mersey Beatles band members: You have long been considered the best Beatles tribute band, what sets you apart? It was John Lennon’s sister, Julia that said we are the best. She came up on stage at one of our shows & told the audience: “There are many Beatles tribute bands from all over the world & I’ve seen them all but The Mersey Beatles are the best I’ve heard!” Plus we’re the only Beatles tribute band whose members are all born, bred & based in Liverpool. We play all the songs in concert pitch. (You’d be surprised how many bands tune down). I think it’s disrespectful to The Beatles. You wouldn’t play Beethoven’s 5th a semi tone down so why play Eight Days A Week in D flat? What is the most requested song? That’s a tough one. Lots of b-sides & album tracks likeThis Boy, P.S. I Love You, I Am The Walrus & In My Life. I guess people don’t want to hear the same old stuff all the time but the big hits are also high on the list like: Hey Jude, She Loves you, Lady Madonna, Penny Lane & Strawberry Fields Forever. WITHIN the pages of Sean Watkin

A

wise man once said that "Everyone has a novel inside them" - whether you believe this or not doesn't really matter, as Sean Watkin, 26, whom I met up with at Soul Cafe' on Bold Street, believed a novel resided within his very core. "I wanted to be a singer when I was younger. But I can't sing, I'm completely tone deaf" he tells me with a giggle. Sean, from Kirkby, soon realised that writing was where his path lay "I've always wanted to write, since I was a child I've always written stories, so it was natural that this is what I would go into." With his first book WITHIN, out and exclusively available through Amazon (hard copy £6 and Kindle edition £4) what can we expect? "It's the first in a planned series set in Liverpool. It's about a local woman's demonic possession, but it becomes apparent that she's possessed by Jesus. There's an involvement of her husband, a Constable for Merseyside Police and a Paranormal Research group. Each of the group have a different take on what's going on - one is a parapsychologist, one is a scientist and one is a medium." WITHIN was originally written as a TV screenplay "I was inspired by stuff like The X Files and Buffy. I worked on it as a TV screenplay since 2005 and in 2008 I rewrote it and made it completely different, I made it a bit more grown up. I sent it off to Lime Pictures and it got some really good feedback, but there was a lot of paranormal stuff on the TV so they were unwilling to pick it up." After being turned down as a television show, he decided it was best to turn the story into a book "I started writing it just before Christmas [2011]." He has found it quite difficult to get noticed as a novelist too "This book, I have self published - it's really hard. I'm still looking for a literary agent at the moment, but I find it strange that we're in the Capital of Culture and have so much to do with art, but there are no literary agents in the city." He went on to say "At the moment it is done through print on demand, so if somebody orders a copy, the book gets printed and sent." So, with a book out, what does he have to say to struggling writers? "Just to keep going. It is down to perseverance." Sean was a typical Scouser with a great sense of humour. Purchase his book, WITHIN, now at Amazon.com for a truly spine tingling read. “If you like Liverpool, give it a read” MONTHLY 49 LIFESTYLE

The Giant Girl By Jim Fleming aka jimtheartist

I chose the bombed out church as I wanted to be near Tom and Jean, who were in the church when Big Issue sellers wrote the names of their friends onto balloons. A friend had died on the street and I sang the song I had written for Emmanuel there. The roofless church with the balloon disappearing through roofless church was a place for giants.

and enjoyed the youtube gatherings .Like all the other children i could not wait to share these things. I do my sharing either on facebook, in church or at Dee Fine arts in Heswall where I paint and draw . The light and cencouragement make it the most wonderful friendly studio for me. There i started to reflect by bringing cards and prints from my photographs. I enjoyed watching the BBC documentary. I needed to read the poem ,that came to me whilst doodling on a piece of mount board in Dee. i would read it in a Holy place .A few years ago I wrote a song about a big issue seller called Emmanuel. I found myself with guitar at a

I arrived up St.James Street tunnel into the drizzle and sunlight of the Pier head. And made my way via the images in my head of the Giant girl sitting on the Liver Buildings- a poster that had been published to help me see the idea. I found her ‘breathing’ in a deck chair serene and peaceful as were the crowd. I filmed her ‘breathing’. I photographed her peacefulness against the ribs of the Atlantic Hotel, where I had stayed when I married. The beach that her deckchair rested upon was, where the buses once did the same. I saw Mike McCartney he had made an iconic photograph. I went

to the Beatles Museum and got an overview of the Liverpudlian crowds. Then I made my way back to spend a few quiet moments drawing in pad ,though lined and though I only had a fountain pen it was a lovely moment .i used to work in the Liver Buildings and it was good to melt the pen line with a little spit, instead of using the pen to add rows of figures. Finding that she was not due to move for an hour, i returned to get a good view from the museum .but the crowds had started to pile in with the same idea .,that of her awakening. The museum had put a rope across the stair, as i descended and so i merged with the growing crowd to catch glimpses of her Gulliver like travels .The hundreds of volunteers made her move balletically- looking like church bell ringers , but wearing the deliberate costumes of the Lilliputians that they were named after. I went home to upload film and see what I had caught. I watched uploaded films as others uploaded theirs 50 MONTHLY LIFESTYLE

service in St.Luke’s bombed out church. I sang my song into a microphone in the altar. To my amazement I found that it was a service for big issue sellers, who had lost their lives on the streets. I watched as other big issue sellers let go many balloons with their friends’ names upon them, into the sky -through the bombed out ,none existent roof.So I read my poem into my camera. I realise now that May’s letter to her father was a prayer too. It had been lifted and drifted through town on these puppets. i saw on a youtube clip that the giant girl had kneeled down and another little girl had climbed a ladder and been allowed to swing on giant girls forearm. I came back and drew the trees I could see from the church. i then in the course of the next couple of weeks made the painting of the whole experience ,which I entitled Giant girl and her Liverputians. I hope you like. the breath in the giant girl was pair of bellows, the breath in the balloons was real put the love behind the intention was as vast as the open sky, Amen.

Pye, another writer from Liverpool. And co-produced it with Bob Cullen. What got you into script writing and making films? Oh I had a near death experience! You see before 2006, I owned a gym and I hadn't really lived a clean life. On a visit to Thailand I fell off a waterfall 70ft high. Life as I knew it had stopped and I watched my life review...which was over in a flash, not so much a sit down, relax and get the popcorn!! No it flashed before me in an instant, and I knew, just knew that I had been living a wasteful life. So there and then you decided to make a change? Yes, since I was a child I had always wanted to be involved in film. I made a promise that if I survived the fall then I would dedicate myself to doing what I had always wanted. And as soon as I made the promise out loud the world as I knew it came back to normal. I continued my fall, but my bum-cheek caught a rock and it shifted my body from what was certain death, to a small dirty looking swamp that eventually broke my fall. Did you make the change straight away? Yes, I came home from Thailand, gave up the gym and decided to start writing. I was a complete novice so I just started putting down whatever I thought, and before I knew it a story had emerged.

Film Director Alan Fields.. in an interview with Joy Lewis.

How long did it take? I spent 18 months writing this first script, hard work... but I always knew it had something. The few people I met who were in the film business all told me that the script would never get on the tele. But I wouldn’t have that...I was on a mission since the waterfall.

Liverpool’s bountiful production of hugely talented creative artists seems inexhaustible, its latest offering coming from the writer Alan Field with the DVD release of his film “Act of Grace.” The film was written, produced and filmed here in the city, and is already gaining great critical acclaim. I had a chat with Alan on the eve of the DVD’s release.

So how did you get the script read? Luck! Early one morning a male pedestrian pushing a pram passed my car at a junction, I realised it was Jimmy McGovern, only one of the best writers in UK. So I turned the car around. I told him I had a script, and if he knew anyone who would read it for me...honestly, hand on heart I never meant for him, but I was sure he would know someone else who had the time...he said he would read it...and so he did.

Without spoiling the plot, what is the film about? It’s about a young English boy, Dezzie, who befriends and protects a young Chinese boy Yasin. The boys grow up to be firm and loyal friends, so when Yasin offers Dezzie a position within his Triad family, he doesn’t turn it down.

Did he like it? Actually he ripped the back out of it, but he did say, if that’s your first attempt then it was an excellent attempt!! So I went to work on the notes he gave me, which turned into the finished script. So then I had a script but no money to turn it into anything

Where and when was Act of Grace shot? It was shot here in Liverpool 4 years ago. The first edit just wasn’t right but we had run out of money, so it took time to find the right people who were not only professional at what they did, but who would edit it as a favour!!

So how did you get the cash together? I met a local business man Bob Cullen in his cafe in West Derby, he had a passion for writing too, and he just loved the idea of the film, and so we began raising money through friends and family. Together we raised £125,000, and the rest as they say is film history!

Is this your first film? Yes but I didn’t write it alone. I co-wrote it with Marc

Act of Grace is on sale now for £8 at Asda and HMV and online at Amazon, Savvi and play.com

CELEBRITY INTERVIEW

TV presenter Christine Bleakley opens up about a big few months ahead...

Christine says living with a sportsman has its advantages. “We’re very supportive of each other and sometimes we work out together,” she says. “We enjoy our fitness and being relatively healthy, but we’re only healthy so that we can allow ourselves the odd treat. Nothing stops me pigging out!” Looking at Christine’s petite size 10 frame, you’d struggle to believe the TV personality was such a foodie. “Maintaining a healthy diet is everything for me,” she says. “I love food and I love cooking, because I enjoy it so much. And if I know I’m going out for dinner in the evening, I’ll do a workout that morning. It makes me feel less guilty about the pigging out bit! It all balances itself out as far as I’m concerned.” It’s refreshing to learn that Christine is neither diet- nor fitness-obsessed. Like most of us, she struggles to fit in a workout every day and aims for two good sessions a week. “We’re in an age where people are conscious of the way they look, but for me, more than anything, I like to exercise to clear my head,” she says. “I love emptying everything. I get very lethargic if I go a whole week without doing anything. Working out makes me feel good.” Despite her impressive physique, Christine admits there isn’t a part of her body she particularly loves. “I have bits that I potentially don’t mind on show as opposed to bits that I know I will always cover,” she says. “There’s never a part of my body I look at and think, ‘Yes, you’re looking good today.’”

W

ith rock hard abs and a red carpet-worthy body that most of us would kill for, it’s no wonder that Christine Bleakley has been named Reebok Ambassador alongside the super fit Jack Osbourne. Thames-side, with London’s iconic Tower Bridge stood behind them, the pair went head to head at the launch of the much talked about fitness initiative, pulling out burpees and squats and working with dumbbells to push their bodies to the limit. Yet after an intense workout, Christine barely breaks into a sweat. “The first time I did Crossfit, I could only do 10 burpees (that’s ‘squat thrusts’ to you and I) I couldn’t breathe afterwards!” she says. “But now I’ll be able to do maybe 25 and that’s a massive difference. You can easily set goals to quickly increase your levels of fitness.” Essentially, the idea behind CrossFit is that a series of varied functional movements performed at high intensity helps to achieve overall physical fitness – so one minute you’re doing push-ups, the next you’re lunging into squats and doing stomach crunches. “It’s very much back to basics,” says Christine. “There are no big scary machines that you don’t know how to use and it never gets boring because you spend 20 seconds doing one thing before moving on to something else. If you don’t have time to go to the gym, you can do this in short, sharp bursts and you can get it done in half an hour. “That said, working out with others who also want to push themselves gives the sport a real sense of community. You’re competing with the other team, but more importantly you’re always competing with yourself.” Engaged to Chelsea footballer, Frank Lampard, 54 MONTHLY LIFESTYLE

It’s reassuring to know that even the super fit have body hang-ups and, for Christine, it’s her bottom. “I need to get back into doing lots of squats over the summer,” she says. “I want to have a pert bottom by the end of August!” So has she always been so fit? An active career in the media, Christine argues, has kept her on the ball. “Before TV presenting I was a floor manager on dramas so I was constantly on the go. Lots of times I’d keep fit from running around at work, never mind doing anything else outside of it. I never considered an office job sat at a desk all day - it’s difficult when you do that because that means you need to work that little bit extra outside of work. I’ve always been very lucky in that respect.” General fitness ambitions aside, it’s no secret that Christine is in the midst of planning a wedding – so is she ready for an all-over bridal body blitz? “I’ll get the summer over with first,” she says. “I know when the big day looms, you start thinking you’ve got to fit into the dress. Panic hasn’t set in yet, undoubtedly it will, but I’m not thinking about it right now. When we get round to planning, I know Frank will be involved, so that makes the whole thing a little less daunting, I suppose!”

Hello Lifestyle readers! Hi guys, At the beginning of the month, I attended the Great British Home Show at the Glow Exhibition Centre at Bluewater in Kent. Coinciding with the Queen’s Jubilee Bank Holiday Weekend, there was a fantastic atmosphere at the Home Show, and it was great to spend time with BBC DIY SOS presenter Oliver Heath, who I appeared alongside. This month I have also been really busy as I have been judging entries for the Aviva Extraordinary Home Competition. The competition highlights the DIY talents of the Great British public and the wonderful and unusual homes they have developed. With £5,000 for the winner, there were loads of amazing entries so it was a difficult but enjoyable task going through them all for an overall winner! I have also been filming for Ideal World TV channel promoting Wagner Spraytech. Wagner Spraytech make the very best spray paints, sprayers, rollers and pads on the market so I was delighted that the show was a fantastic success, selling loads of Wagner’s products for Fathers’ Day. This month I have put together this tip for how to build window flower boxes. Window flower boxes are great because they can make even the smallest outdoor area look attractive, whether you are in the city or the countryside.

All the best, Craig “Follow me on Facebook and Twitter. My Twitter name is @craigbigbro1 and Facebook is www.facebook.com/Craig-Phillips”

Job 76 - Build Window Flower Boxes Window flower boxes make a nice touch to any home and are a great means of bringing a bit of colour to your living space.

TOOLS/MATERIALS: • Chop saw • Drill / Driver • Tape measure • Pencil • 6” x 2” timber / plywood • 2” x 2” timber • 75mm screws • 30mm screws • Glue

STAGE ONE STAGE ONE Cut off lengths of decking are ideal for this type of task as they are often made from treated timber, so will last longer. If you already have decking in your garden, it is nice to have a matching window box, but if not, the grooves on the decking planks provide a decorative finish for any garden. The length of your flower box will depend on the size of your window, but the width and depth is normally around 12 inches, so just 2 lengths of decking will be ample. Alternatively, lengths of 6” x 2” and 2” x 2” sawn or planed timber are more than suitable. STAGE TWO Once you have determined the length, width and depth of your window box, you can begin to cut your timber to size. First, cut your 2” x 2” and 6” x 2” timber to form the front, back and sides of your window box. Next, fix down the reverse side of your timber (the inside of the box) by drilling pilot holes and driving in the 75mm screws with your drill / driver. STAGE THREE STAGE TWO STAGE THREE You should have created a long rectangular box shape and are now ready to fit the base. Once you have cut a piece of 6” x 2” to size, apply a small amount of glue to the box and lay the base over the glue screwing the timber down using your drill/driver and 30mm screws. Finally, drill a number of 6mm holes 4 inches apart into the base of your window flower box to help with the drainage. MONTHLY 59 LIFESTYLE

SHOW HOME NOW OPEN

IN SOUTH LIVERPOOL

AN eagerly awaited show home is now open in South Liverpool, enabling buyers to picture themselves living in the style and comfort of a brand new Redrow home. The homes at Cressington Heath near Garston have attracted lots of interest from buyers who want a home that oozes the charm and character of a ‘period’ property but with bright modern interiors that are full of family-friendly features. Lesley Myers, area sales manager for Redrow Homes (Lancashire), commented: “There’s been a lot of interest in this new phase of Cressington Heath and while some people have had the confidence to reserve ‘off plan’ others see being able to view a finished property as an important part of the home buying process. They have been keen to see inside the show home, which has been styled by professional interior designers with a blueprint of elegance, good taste and family living. “Visitors love how the open plan layout maximises the potential of the space

available in our show home. And they a re al s o i m pre s s e d by a l l t ha t i s included in our standard specification.” The four-bedroom Stratford showhome features an open plan kitchen and dining room with French doors onto the rear garden. It’s a bright and airy space geared to being the ‘hub’ of the family home, while the separate lounge to the front of the house is perfect for quieter, more relaxing times.

Like all new Redrow homes, the kitchen in the show home is well equipped with integrated top brand name appliances with oven, fridge freezer and even the microwave included as standard. Tall cabinets and extra wide drawers offer plenty of storage.

bathroom, which boasts an elegant white suite and quality fixtures and fittings.

Upstairs the master bedroom enjoys the benefit of an en-suite, with the remaining three bedrooms sharing the family

All of the homes are available with the Government backed NewBuy initiative, which allows purchasers to take out a 95% mortgage – a potential life saver for those without hefty savings or without a sizeable chunk of equity in their existing property.

Prices at Cressington Heath start from £199,995 for a three-bedroom new home. A four-bedroom Stratford, similar to the show home, is available from £237,995.

Cressington Heath is well placed with easy access to the local amenities of Garston and the nearby New Mersey Shopping Park, at Speke, while Liverpool city centre is just a short journey away by road or rail. The area boasts strong public transport links and is within commuting distance of the M62 and M57 motorways. The new show home is open Thursday to Monday from 10am to 5.30pm. ZEST LETS THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO BUY-TO-LET

Many have described the buy-to-let market as one of the most successful investment models of recent times. However, like with any investment, there’s always a risk of losing money as much as there is of making it, and unless you do your research, buying a property to rent out can bring with it lots of problems.

with Julie West, Director of Zest Lets

Here are MD of Zest Lets Julie West’s top ten buy- are students, they need something that’s not luxurious but easy to clean. If the tenants are young professionals, go to-let tips: 1. Do your research This is probably my most important tip – firstly ask yourself the question, what do you know about the market? Get familiar with the benefits and don’t be afraid to do regular Google news searches to find out exactly what is happening at present. 2. It’s all about the area Whether the property you are looking at is cheap or expensive, always make sure that the area its in has potential. Is it a place where people would like to live? What are transport links like? Does it have good schools? Is it a good area for student accommodation? 3. Be realistic when it comes to money Before you even arrange viewings with your estate agent, sit down and realistically work out how much you can afford to spend on your investment. Then, estimate how much you will be able to ask for in rent per month. Although it’s never nice to think about, ask yourself what will happen if the property sits empty for a month or two? Could you afford it? 4. Don’t make quick decisions When it comes to getting a mortgage, always shop around to find the best deal for you. Look for competitive rates and don’t worry about asking too many questions – you are under no obligation to use them. 5. Put yourself in the tenant’s shoes Instead of thinking what you would like out of the property, put yourself in the shoes of the tenant. For example, if they 64

for something more modern. If it is a family, they are going to need plenty of room. 6. Take it one step at a time

Take one step at a time and think very carefully about how another purchase would affect your bank balance… and your life. 7. Don’t always look close to home Most buy-to-let investors look for properties near to where they live. But your town may not be the best investment and it often pays to cast your net a little bit wider. 8. Haggling works When it comes to negotiating a discount, as a buy-to-let investor you have similar advantages as a first-time buyer. Just remember, you are not in a chain or reliant on selling a property to buy another and this can be a key factor especially in a tough market. 9. Be aware of what can go wrong Always think of the negatives as well as the positives – even if you don’t want to! Over the years, I have seen even the most popular of areas full of empty properties that can sit empty for months. It’s happened to a lot of investors so be prepared. 10. How involved to you want to be? This is where your agent comes in… Agents will charge you a management fee, but will also deal with any problems you get. We have a good book of contacts, including plumbers, electricians and other workers if things go wrong. In the long run, it can save you a lot of hassle.
