Celebrity Interview
MARCUS COLLINS
How has your life changed since being on The X Factor Dramatically, this time last year I was working in a hairdressers and now I am working in music full time and loving every minute of it. I’m getting to write and produce music and I’ve been so privileged to have worked with some incredible people. And I’m also gearing up for The X Factor Tour which I cannot wait for. What are your plans when the tour ends? When the tour ends I hope to go straight back in the studio when I’ll hopefully be putting down tracks for my second album which, god willing that the first album does well to give me that opportunity. What has been your best experience to date? The whole show was an amazing experience but my definite highlight so far was playing in front of Royalty at Royal Albert Hall, that was such an incredible honour. What has the response from the people of Merseyside been to you? They have been just amazing, so supportive everyone keeps coming up to me and assuring me that I have done the city proud which means so much to me. I cannot wait to perform in Liverpool on The X Factor Tour to thank everyone in person as people have been beyond supportive.
What is top of your wish list of bling things to buy when you get your first cheque from your single? I’d like to pay my mum’s mortgage off so she doesn’t have to worry but that’s not very exciting is it! But I would love an extra large Jo Malone candle, you know the huge ones! Marcus will be appearing at The X Factor 2012 Live Tour at Echo Arena on 27 & 28 February. For tickets go to www.echoarena.com or call 0844 8000 400 11

ebruary already – how did that happen?! It’s set to be an action packed year at Echo Arena with so many great shows already announced – February kicks us off in style with Strictly Come Dancing, Olly Murs, The Wanted & X Factor Live then in March we have JLS, The Stars From The Commitments and Rebecca Ferguson. Plus every child’s dream, Disney On Ice presents Princesses & Heroes skates into the building for 5 days! January saw the One Direction boys play their first headline show here, performing in our EchoTwo layout to a sell-out audience - they played plenty of crowd pleasers including It’s Gotta Be You, Up All Night and Stand Up. It was great to see everyone having so much fun and the boys declared the show ‘their best so far’ – you could feel the love in the air and it was fab that they’d

enjoyed their time in Liverpool as much we enjoyed having them. Let’s hope they come back soon! I’m really looking forward to The Stars Of The Commitments show here on 16 March – can you believe that it was 1991 that the film came out, back when Doc Martins, Noel’s House Party & bomber jackets were all the rage! The show here in Liverpool is only one of three UK dates and so we’re delighted that they are performing here. The concert will be a full blown soul extravaganza with songs from the movie and many added extras! See you next month & Happy Valentine’s Day!

iverpool based Halewood Inns has expanded its portfolio to four new venues across the region. One of which is the formed Grange Manor in Gatecre which is now a beautfully restored gothic mansion. The Crying Tree name comes from a historic tree in the grounds of the venue which appears to cry when it sheds its flowers, not to be confused with the biblical Joshua Tree with all the religious wall hangings inside. As pub food goes, this has to be one of the best in the area. With starters typically priced at £4.95 (Chilli Tiger Prawns, Bury Blackpudding,) and Grills are £7.50, it should not cause too much damage on your pursestrings either.

My husband chose the soup of the day (leek, potato and goats cheese) to start with which was served piping hot. I chose the chicken spring rolls which were such an enormous dish it could have sufficxed as lunch! With so much choice, as you would expect with jacket potatoes and sandwiches, there’s also a Seafood section and a selection of Comfort Food, which includes bangers and mash, gammon and egg, spaghetti bolognese and curry. For mains I had the homemade 7oz beef burger served with mozarello cheese in a huge sesame seed knot with fries on the side. My husband had the rump steak, cooked to perfect so much so that he went into the kitchen to congratulate the chef. My burger was delicious and all the more taste for being home made,. It’s only let down was the onion rings which tasted as the pre frozen and processed ones. However all the other ingredients, including the
coleslaw look freshly prepared and cooked. For desert I predictably had the warm chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream and strawberries, while simon had the homemade apple and rhubarb crumble. We also ordered a spaghetti bolognese and side order of an aromatic rosemary and roasted garlic loaf for our daughter who slept the whole way through the meal! We took it home and she had it for her dinner but before I had a little taste - delicious. Over all a hearty meal was enjoyed by us both on a cold winter’s day. The portions are enormous, the service is superb and you definitely get value for money. Most important of all the food is delicious. My slight criticism would be to repaint the ceilings from back to cream, but then I suppose it would lose its gothic splendour.

ombrero can be found on Borough road in Prenton just a stones throw from Prenton Park home to the super White army. Upon entering you get that immediate Mexican feel through the colours and decor. There are many traditional dishes on the menu from chili con carnegie to chemichangas and burritos. Myself and Liam, the student executive producer from the Radio City breakfast show started with “sombreros a nachos”, which was a great sharing dish for two people. It was made up of tortilla chips topped with chili con carne, salsa, melted cheese and guacamole. We also couldn’t resist a portion of Alitas, which are marinated oven cooked chicken wings served in a fire roasted barbecue sauce. Trust me on this, these wings taste even better that they sound on the menu. The super nachos packed a punch and it was an extremely generous portion size. For the main course we had a selection following the recommendation from Paul, the restaurant manager. He advised us to have the Borrego which is a really tender lamb slow cooked in traditional mexican seasonings

and spiced with fresh red chilli. We also had a portion of beef chemichangas another Mexican classic compiled of a deep fried flour tortilla, filled with a choice of beef, chicken or roasted vegetables which came served with Mexican rice, re-fried beans, salsa, sour cream, guacamole and a crisp picole and gallo salad. I had a chilli chicken enchilada cooked golden brown on the outside and smothered in a full flavoured onion and tomato salsa. There was something very familiar about the flavour and high standards of Sombrero Mexican food, the recipes and the head chef have come from Hope Street’s highly acclaimed El Macho, a former favourite haunt of lovers of mexican food. The five star standards at Sombrero are as good as El Macho ever was. This would be a magnificent venue for a party or get together for a girly night or lads night out. I’m sure this will become a regular favourite for the lads from Prenton Park. Well done to Paul and Deborah who have scored an absolute hat trick with this fantastic Mexican eatery. LAURA WHITE
Singer Laura White chats exclusively to Lifestyle Monthly about her debut album, Lyrics In My Underwear and performing at the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards later this month in an interview with Amanda moss.
T
ell us about your new album. It is a collection of self written, cool pop songs that are taken completely from my heart and diary. Featuring piano driven ballads, cool mid tempo quirky pop songs and a sound that is completely ‘me’. My album was completely written
autobiographically, taken from my diary.. every song was an experience in my life. The album is mostly based around love and its truths. I worked with some amazing producers including Cutfather, John Gordon, Alex Grey and Martin Sutton. What is the style of your music? The style is cool pop.. mainly piano driven. Are there any tracks which are particularly special? My favourite tracks on the Album are ‘I Heard’ and ‘Crazy.’ The Title ‘Lyrics in my Underwear’ is taken as a tongue in cheek anedote... when i wrote some of the songs they were so honest and real and i would frequently need to write them in front of those that i couldn’t possibly show them to, so would hide them in my underwear! For instance, one time i wanted to write a song about a break up but i was with my ex at the time so couldn’t possibly express this to him.. so the underwear was needed!
Are you still in contact with Simon Cowell or Cheryl Cole? I dont get to see the judges too much anymore as I am so busy recording, gigging and developing myself as an artist BUT Cheryl is there for me :-) What did you learn from being on the X Factor? I learnt that the industry can be extremely cut throat and you can only be who you are, to stand strong and work to your utmost and be true to yourself. Has it changed since you appeared on it? It’s completely changed. I do prefer it when I was on it, it just seemed more music based than now as it is so hugely staged and based on tv viewings! I try to catch it when i can but its difficult as i perform so much! What are your plans for 2012? My plans for 2012 are the album show.. releasing the album and being true to myself. Touring the album and developing as a writer.
recording the last 3 years but my heart is up north. Everything about being up north is me, family, the people, good chippy food i love it!! Who is your biggest inspiration? I have so many inspirations, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, one of my exs who is now one of my best friends, Bridget Jones... so many. What has been your biggest extravagance? Probably taking my sister to vegas or a maldives holiday!! and i love a nice dress :-) far too much! If you could change one thing about your life what would it be? I wouldn’t change anything.. any ups and downs make you who you are. I believe my lowest points in my life made me a fighter and I’m proud of that. i will always fight for my music. Describe your style My personal fashion style is quite out there. It changes frequently, also I love vintage, i love one off eccentric pieces crazy hats, scarfs one off things no one has! i love bright colours, i love girly fashion.. i love 50s fashion.. i love the designer betsey johnson sooo much!
Looking towards your performance at the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards, what can we expect from you? What was it like supporting Peter I cant wait!! will be crazy!! completely live and just have Andre on tour? What is he like? Supporting Pete was amazing he lots of fun!!! liverpool is one of my favourite places in the world the is THE nicest man in the industry people are amazing! and extremely driven and wise. Where would you perform your Who would you like to duet ultimate gig? with? My ideal ultimate gig is filling MEN My dream is to duet obviously Arena with my album. with my greats Aretha franklin, Stevie wonder. In terms of commercial artists out currently i would love to do a track with Drake. You’re a northern lass, how important to you is it to stick to your roots? So many artists move to London don’t they but you have chosen to stay up north I have actually moved to London while iI have been
Do you have lots of celebrities in your phone book? I am not one for all ‘celebrity celebrity’. I’m all about the music and being an artist. BUT i do have Cheryl of course, Pixie and a few more Tickets for the Liverpool Lifestyle awards are available to buy at: www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk

Clatterbridge your cancer centre ‘Clatterbridge your cancer centre’ is the only charity that raises money to directly benefit Clatterbridge cancer patients across the region. We are dedicated to providing outstanding cancer care to around 26,000 patients each year at our centre in Wirral, our specialist Radiotherapy centre in Liverpool and our network or chemotherapy unit in local hospitals across Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire. The money we raise helps us to offer the most up to date treatment, support vital research, treat their patients with world class equipment and provide life changing support services that would otherwise be unavailable. With 1 in 3 people being diagnosed with cancer at some point, there are so many of us locally who have benefited from the treatment provided by Clatterbridge. This year we need to raise £1.4m to help support the vital work we do at Clatterbridge but we need your help to make it happen.
Wirral Fashion Festival
As well as receiving a fantastic £5 from every ticket sold to Wirral Fashion Festival, ‘Clatterbridge your cancer centre’ will also be holding a handbag swap on the night. Guests are invited to bring along their unwanted handbags to swap with other guest’s bags, in return for making a small donation to the charity. So if the January sales have left you with too many handbags, or you just fancy a change make sure you bring them along on Friday 23 March and help make a real difference to the lives of Clatterbridge patients and their families.
Alison’s Story
Last summer, 18 year old Alison, from Tattenhall near Chester, visited her GP after experiencing increasingly worse stomach pains. She was told she could have a water infection or grumbling appendix, but a week later, with the stomach pains still getting progressively worse her GP told her she could in fact be pregnant. Thrilled by this news Alison, along with her boyfriend Craig and her mum 18
Val, spent the weekend looking for houses for the couple and their new arrival. With the support of both families Alison was excited for the future. Unfortunately on the Monday, when Alison went for a scan doctors told her she wasn’t pregnant but that they had found a tumour on her right ovary. Following overnight tests, Alison was discharged and told to return in two weeks for a biopsy on the tumour. The following day Alison was rushed to Accident and Emergency in excruciating pain; she was diagnosed that afternoon with a 20cm by 16cm metastatic germ cell tumour. Alison underwent surgery the next day and doctors successfully removed the tumour that was wrapped around her right ovary. After a four day stay in hospital Alison was prescribed a course of chemotherapy, which involved a stay at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology’s Teenage and Young Adult Ward, a brand new four-bedded facility dedicated to patients aged 16-24 which offers privacy and independence as well as space for family to stay overnight. During her stay at Clatterbridge Alison and her family decided she wanted to fundraise for ‘Clatterbridge your cancer centre’ to say thank you for the fantastic treatment and support she received. So far Alison has raised over £5000 and has lots more fundraising planned for 2012. As Alison explains, “We want to raise as much money as possible for the centre and the fantastic work that’s done there.” Thankfully Alison has responded well to treatment and Doctors are optimistic for her future. Alison’s mum, Val, said: “We’re all very positive. This hasn’t ruined Alison’s life; its simple put it on hold for a while. She’ll be fine in no time at all.” To book a ticket go to www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk

C
osmetic procedures, both surgical and non- surgical are becoming increasingly popular. The market is set to double in the next five years and consequently we are seeing rapidly escalating numbers of cosmetic practitioners offering various services either clinic based, salon based or even in your own home. None of these procedures are without risk, the worst case scenario being permanent scaring or disfigurement. As a result of irresponsible cut-price offers more and more people are putting themselves at unnecessary risk. When considering surgical procedures it pretty easy to make the right choice, you select a surgeon who is registered with the General Medical Council and is also a member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and ideally is a consultant who also holds an NHS post as they have been trained to the highest standards and you know that you are going to get the right level of aftercare and reassurance should there be any complications, this has become all
too evident recently with the PIP implant scare. In the non-surgical arena (e.g. Botox and fillers) things are a little bit more difficult, the industry is largely unregulated and it is alarming that non-medical people are carrying out these procedures! So how can you safeguard yourself when looking to get work done on your face? You should ask the following questions, what is the background of your practitioner? Plastic surgeons, doctors, or dentists should do this work; the minimum qualification is nursing with an additional qualification in prescribing (this can be checked by checking with the Nursing and Midwifery Council NMC). Ask about the level of training your practitioner has undergone, most courses are a single day and while the content may be excellent is this really enough to be let loose on the faces of the trusting public. There is simply no substitute for experience. Ask your practitioner how many years experience they have, and how many procedures they do each month. Remember anyone claiming to be Harley Street trained has most probably done a one-day course in rented office on Harley Street!
your practitioner is qualified to personally prescribe them for you, or are they in fact getting them via a third party. Ask about follow up and aftercare arrangements will you be offered an automatic follow up with the facility to compare your before and after photographs? Even in the hands of the most experienced practitioners unpredictable or adverse events can occur, is your practitioner able to deal with complications should they arise? Under qualified people will struggle here, leaving you to seek help elsewhere. Ask to to see the practioner’s certificate of malpractice insurance. So if you are thinking about getting a treatment done, do your homework, ask around for recommendations and don’t let cut price deals influence your decision as with most things in life you get what you pay for! Dr. Fab Equizi Mb ChB was previously a General practitioner and has gained over twelve years experience in the field of cosmetic medicine, and is involved in the advanced training of other practitioners. under the guise of a trolley dolly, and in a blink, traded it in for a husband, two children, a horse, and a career as a Colonic Hydrotherapist - all without any adjustment period. I realised that I was trying to keep all my plates spinning in the air without comprehending why I was doing it. Worse still, I was working crazy hours that were suffocating what I loved to do best, which was motivating people to lead healthier lives. I decided to readdress this imbalance by exploring how your mind works, why you do what you do and what’s needed to shape your potential experiences. And after many years of studying, applying myself plus a sabbatical in France, I learned how to reposition my life goals and others too.
JoanneWILLCOX Willcox JOANNE Caring for your body, wellbeing and happiness.
I have now achieved clarity of mind and focus which I never thought possible. Five years on, I’m incredibly optimistic about my future, I’m far healthier, and if I could sell my energy to the National Grid, I’d be a wealthy woman. So where am I going with this? Well, I found that sometimes when we can’t forge ahead and we’re losing ourselves in our lives, we must drift laterally... that is, we must try a different approach, evaluate, change what’s not working and try again.

S Sun 11th March 10 ome time ago, I was having a midlife meltdown. Happy to have thriving business and do the suburban wifey, mumsy role, I’d sort of accepted my place in the Universe. However, hard, hard work and almost no energy had resulting in my backside growing to the size of a Nissan Micra. This was reaffirmed by my hubby’s cutting remarks after he caught me creeping across a fully-lit landing at 3am in the knack – similar to a bunny caught in a cars headlights (but with more meat on the bones). I retaliated “My bum may be fat, but at least I’ve got my own hair!”
more information go www.2mindsnlp.co Of course, my knee jerk reaction was to hit the local gym at Crabwall Manor; pedalling frantically on my Life Cycle and contemplating my own self worth and purpose. In fact, I concluded that although I enjoyed my work and personal life, I’d been on a permanent and excessive full speed merry-go-round; always pushing forward to make everyone else’s world peachy - at the expense of my own. I’d spend my 20’s jet-setting around the world 22
I’ve also realised the main ingredient for my success is ACTION as it always gives me a result. Sometimes action allows me to move ahead and sometimes it teaches me a new lesson, but it’s never a waste of time. So if you can see where I’m coming from, it’s time you too got your bum out of its comfort zone, and give your true dreams a chance. You’ll be amazed at how your life will change for the better. RACHEL’S RETURN
Singer and actress Rachel Stevens returns with a message for girls on the town!
R
achel Stevens has been away for too long. Sure, the demands of motherhood quite legitimately expect full and devoted attention, but little Amelie’s gain has surely been the music industry’s loss... Thankfully, the ‘Sweet Dreams My LA Ex’ and ‘Some Girls’ singer is back – revived, revitalised, and looking as stunning as ever. And this time, as well as the music, she carries with her some rather engaging research about the partying habits of the female population. But first, the music... “I’m in the studio again, and it feels brilliant to be back doing it,” she begins. “It feels like the right time. “Music’s something I absolutely love. It makes me feel complete. But this time I’m changing things around a bit – a new sound, a bit of a departure from what I did before, and exciting times.” The mum of one, regularly voted one of the sexiest women on the planet by FHM readers, toyed with the idea of an acting career, winning supporting roles in such intellectual fare as ‘Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo’ and ITV drama ‘Susie Gold’, and even uprooted herself to LA to pursue her on-screen dream. So are there any plans to step in front on the lens again? “Nothing at the moment, but you never know. If something comes up, maybe, but I’m really busy with everything else going on, so it’s not my main priority. For the time being at least, I’m going to keep my focus in the studio.” She adds: “I loved my time out in LA, I didn’t do it solely for the purpose of my career; I just really fancied a change as well. I did go for lots of auditions and worked on my music, but nothing concrete came out of it. But give me the chance; I would jump at an opportunity to move out there again for a while. Maybe when Amelie’s older? The lifestyle is second to none.” For the time being, Stevens - the face of the Baileys drink and their ‘Add a Little Something’ campaign – is busy encouraging women to have their girlfriends round for a fun night in. With going out becoming much more expensive, it’s a notion that sits nicely with newfound motherhood and the constant need for babysitters! “Everything has changed so dramatically really,” she says. “Nothing could have prepared me for it. I’m up early every morning, and I’m not great at getting up early. At least I wasn’t before... I’m better now. We used to go out all the time at the drop of a hat but we can’t do that now. It takes so much forward planning. Everything changes. We’re responsible for this little person. But I’m in love with her, she’s such a great girl, so good, has never really cried, and makes it very easy for us. And we’ve great support from family about the area. “But it’s been really interesting getting involved with the Baileys campaign as well. People are socialising in different ways than they used to. I’ve loved the drink for years, and was interested to hear that 73% of women never or only get together on special occasions for girly nights. I think the credit crunch has had a real effect on that, so we’re calling for girls to get involved in and inspired to be going out or staying in more – whatever, as long as they are enjoying themselves. Whatever we do in life, everyone needs a bit of a break.” So while she’s out enjoying herself, Rachel’s putting on hold plans to extend the family?! “Amelie’s magical, and a delightful thing. At some point, yes, I love more kids, but right now, we’re happy with just the one extra mouth to feed!”
Rachel Stevens adds a little something special to her girls’ nights with Baileys. Check out

hen you walk into the Woodlands Beauty Spa & Evergreen Clinic in the leafy suburb of Aigburth, you automatically enter an oasis of tranquility. The luxury Beauty Spa offers manicures, pedicures, massage, facials, St Tropez spray tan and Hollywood or Brazilian waxing . Upstairs the Evergreen clinic offers anti-aging treatments and all aspects of facial aesthetics including dermal fillers, botox and laser hair removal. Mother of 4 Alison Stananought, launched Woodlands in 2003 from a converted garage in her home. “Overnight it just became a success,” she said, “ It was just wonderful, it was all word of mouth, clients were so happy they soon told their friends and it became clear that I would need bigger premises.” Moving into a small shop in Quarry Street, Woolton Village , Alison’s business soon expanded. With the support of her loyal staff and indeed her business partner Belinda Done, who provides all the injectable Botox treatments and Dermal Filler treatments, the two women decided to expand further with the setting up of Woodlands Spa and the Evergreen Clinic in their own premises on the corner of Woodlands Road and Aigburth Road. Evergreen offers privacy to clients who want to come for treatments Belinda says, “We have a separate entrance to Evergreen on Woodlands Road. The entrance takes you straight upstairs to a comfortable and private waiting area and

treatment rooms. The layout of the rooms ensure complete privacy, which all our clients expect, whether they are celebrities or not. Someone can come in and go straight into a room if they wish to as confidentiality is key.” She added, “Many of our patients are lacking in confidence, while you or I think a nose looks normal, they may look in the mirror every day and hate themselves. We can smooth out a bump or reshape a crooked nose, they can walk out of here knowing they are feeling a lot better about themselves.,” Both Woodlands Spa and Evergreen Clinic are warm and cosy and stylishly designed with natural colour tones. The aroma of healing oils welcomes you and immediately de stresses you. It is a haven of luxury. Top treatments include Juvederm, Laser Hair Removal, Dermal Rollering and Anti-wrinkle Injections. Alison says of her treatments “whether a client comes for an eyebrow shape or a Chemical Peel, we wish it to be one with a warm welcome, a smile and to leave feeling uplifted and to have had an experience that makes them feel better than when they came in” To book a free consultation or for more information call 0151 728 7652.2536 www.woodlandsbeauty.co.uk www.evergreenclinic.co.uk

Hi
I am Luke Russell MD of Ludus Lounge Bar on Bold Street Liverpool. This is my first column for Lifestyle Magazine, so firstly I would like to say hello to all you readers out there. The past few months have been really manic for myself and the team as we took a building at the top end of Bold Street from a shell to ground floor and basement bar. We opened up just before Christmas and we are pleased to be part of Liverpool’s most eclectic street. There is nothing quite like Bold Street for character and atmosphere in the city. We offer coffees (we even have our own branded Ludus coffee), beers, and food to share in our upstairs space. Downstairs we take it back to the days of Al Capone and bootlegging with our very own Boardwalk Empire style setting going on. Perfect for a small company party or a celebration with friends. This month I have been in London at a technology show sampling our new Samsung SUR40 tables (kind of a large

decided to start 2012 with a new hair colour - pink! My new do was done for me by the lovely Chris Millea at Pure in Wallasey, its a bit ‘out there’ so I wont be keeping it long but a change is as good as a rest they say. Talking of Rests, I had a well earned one in Lanzarote with my sister and friend, we ate lovely seafood all week, sat by the pool and drank cocktails all week, what more could you ask for? I’m already thinking of my next trip and have asked Charlie at Crown Travel to hunt me out a good deal for November time. I am hitting 2012 hard and have been making lots of calls an having lots of meetings as I want this to be a great year
tablet screen table). Samsung SUR40 is the new generation of Microsoft® Surface® experiences featuring PixelSense™ technology, which gives LCD panels the power to see without the use of cameras. It is now possible for people to share, collaborate and explore together using a large, thin display that recognizes fingers, hands and other objects placed on the screen. We take delivery of 2 of these fantastic machines at the end of January. They cannot be found anywhere else in the North West so we have an exclusive and I for one cannot wait. We will be placing them in Ludus as one of our key features is to “share”. That is highlighted in all our food we serve. Shared platters, finger foods and slider burgers. These Samsung tables will add to that as upto 6 people at a time can work around a table (it can actually work with upto 50 touches at any time) all looking at different things. Someone can be on Facebook while another is checking emails, checking photos or just watching Sky Sports Scorecentre. The features are endless. For example it can be used as a set of DJ decks if needed or a Poker based table. It seamlessly merges the digital and physical worlds and the possibilities are endless. Why not call in for a coffee and say hello and try it for yourselves. Luke. 0151-709-6607 | 108 Bold St Liverpool

business wise, I’ve been lucky enough to sign up 3 brand new clients already this year and I’m excited to see what might be around the corner. There are plenty of networking events and awards ceremonies I’m happy to be attending, the next big event in the social diary is the Lifestyle Awards, a couple of my clients are up for awards so I’m looking forward to cheering them on at this fantastic event at the Crowne Plaza. I also have some brilliant gigs booked in for the year and I’m delighted to be going to see the Stone Roses for the comeback gig that nobody believed would happen at Heaton Park and staying at Novotel in Manchester, and then I’m seeing Noel Gallagher at our Echo Arena I went to Merchants restaurant to celebrate a good friends birthday, I have to say I’ve never eaten there before and I was more than pleasantly surprised. I had a lovely chicken dish which was cooked perfectly, its so difficult to
cook chicken well I think. Its a stunning restaurant and cocktail bar in a beautiful listed building, as its linked to the hotel 62 Castle Street, you could even stay over if you had one too many wines! I have loved January and all the great deals in restaurants, its a clever ploy to get us all in there when everyone is trying to diet and save money, I resolved not to resolve this year so I’m taking full advantage, so far I’ve been treated to 50% off at Prego, Gusto and The Noble House. I do love a bargain. Roll on next January I say. Duly noting that all I’ve done is eat so far this year I booked in a Segway experience, if you haven’t had a go before I highly recommend that you do. They are vertical scooters which rely on amazing balancing technology, I would love to buy one and scoot around the city on it. Its the perfect present to buy the person who has everything. MAJOR OVERHAUL PLANNED FOR UNDERGROUND STATIONS
LIVERPOOL CENTRAL TO SEE MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS
M
erseyrail’s five underground stations are to get a £40 million plus overhaul over the next few years starting with £20 million improvements to Central Station. The work at Liverpool Central will improve access, particularly for disabled passengers and those with luggage or children in buggies, improve the passenger flow at platform level and generally refurbish all passenger areas. It includes: • an additional lift • new escalators to the Northern Line platform • additional platform space • new, brighter cladding on the platform walls • larger and improved toilet facilities and waiting areas The work in the concourse area will build on the recently completed MtoGo unit in the ticket hall. The walls and ceiling will have new, brighter cladding, the flooring will be renewed and there will lots of natural light as a clear glazed roof and glass external walls will be constructed. When the project is completed Liverpool Central will have undergone a complete refurbishment of all areas. Our new Managing Director Maarten Spaargaren said: “Liverpool Central is the busiest station on the network and should be Merseyrail’s flagship station but as we all know, it certainly isn’t in its present state. This major overhaul is long overdue and the inevitable inconvenience of closing the station whilst the work is carried out will be well worth the wait. By autumn 2012 Liverpool Central will be a very pleasant place to catch your train” He said: “Liverpool Central will be fit to serve a city that itself has gone onward and upward over the last few years” Jo Kaye, route director of Network Rail, said: “This is great news for everyone who uses Central station and represents a major investment in the city by Network Rail. When the work is finished we will have transformed the
station and I am sure everyone who uses it will welcome the improvements.” Network Rail, which is providing the bulk of the funding for the work, said precise dates are not yet available because contracts for the work have not been let but the station is expected to be closed from April to August next year (2012). The announcement is being made now to give passengers advanced notice that Central station will have to close for about four months while the improvements are made. With the number of people who use the station every day already making the platforms very crowded, it is simply impossible to carry out work on this scale and keep the station open. Train services will operate as normal – but they will pass through the station without stopping. Councillor Mark Dowd, chair of Merseytravel, said: ”I have campaigned long for these improvements because, quite simply, Liverpool Central is no longer fit for purpose. I have already warned it is approaching a situation where it will become dangerous to the travelling public. “Without this development it would only be a matter of time before someone was hurt.” Neil Scales, chief executive of Merseytravel, added: ”We are drawing up plans for alternative bus services for the duration of the work to minimise inconvenience to commuters and to shoppers.”

All the Brazilian players from LFC and EFC over the last few years all seem to love the salon. Hannah popped down to see Neil and the team and found out why. The salon has just been re-vamped and extended as business continues to grow. They even have their own product range now. We asked Neil Smith why it seems to be the place to go outside the city centre. Neil commented “We offer a laid back and ambient atmosphere with all the city centre style and quality in the leafy area off Aigburth Road.” We think it must be the samba beats he plays in the salon. www.neilsmithhair.co.uk

GOOD, BAD OR JUST PLAIN UGLY? Each month we will look at a different social network site Whilst there are a heap of benefits associated with online social networking sites, they are still used as a scapegoat for all that is wrong with society. I don't agree. I hear the arguments that it is ‘not safe for our children’ and that ‘they made the riots a whole lot easier’, but I think the problem is lack of understand-
Great local follows on twitter: @terri_dwyer, @Home_Quarter, @visitwestkirby but the tweet of the month belongs to Sheree Murphy. Congratulations from us all x
ing. Anyone who is familiar with these sites will know that there are good privacy settings for you to remain anonymous. Unfortunately, with the advancement in technology, will come the abusers. That is life.
Here are a few apps that I think everyone should have. This is basically a portable version of Microsoft Office allowing you to write a letter while waiting for the doctor or update your expenses in excel. Sign up for a Google account, set up calendar online then sync with app. The beauty of this is that you can share calendars, ideal for work mates and bands etc. If you have an iPhone and your friend has one too, simply ‘bump’ hands holding your phones to transfer photos directly. It works like a dream.
COME ON WIRRAL! Liverpool Fashion Week is all but sold out and I think it’s time that Wirral raised their game. We have a lot to talk about on our peninsular and here is a chance to stand up and be counted. I am 100% behind the event and want to make sure that everyone I know can have a piece of the action. All the details are at the foot of the page but there are opportunities to have involvement other than the catwalk. You can rent a pop up boutique or become a sponsor... Get in touch! Also, I would like to work with Wirral businesses wanting to spread their wings across the water. If you are interested in talking through ideas call or email me today.
PLEASE SIR(I), CAN I HAVE...? As a wholehearted Apple fan (the company, not the fruit), and indeed a fan of the iPhone 4s, I cannot help but report my disappointment of Siri. The all singing, all dancing technology that would be our new personal assistant, we were told, cannot understand the vast majority of my requests. It is good fun to hear a machine say “I am not capable of that”
Do you ever feel that you miss out on all the bargains? Wherever you are, this little fella will download the latest money off deals near you.
when asked “Siri, do you love me?” and we all have, but I must confess the most popular response I get is “I’m sorry, I do not understand your request”. I then have to repeat and select an answer from a list, which total defies the point. No?
This is so worth having. It is a remote desktop app, but it is really fast. An absolute must have for those on the move.

With exciting plans for Liverpool for
2012, Cllr Wendy Simon, Cabinet Member for Culture and Tourism chats to Lifestyle magazine about what's in store for us..... What is your job? My remit is to look after the City’s Cultural Offer which includes sports, libraries and tourism that goes on in Liverpool, that also includes St George's Hall and The Town Hall, Any event that is planned with the culture team is discussed with me. We have devised The Liverpool Plan run by Liverpool Vision with it’s brand message “It’s Liverpool, I’m Liverpool”. It’s an endorsement that shows the City is working to and gives a clear message of a City on the up. What events have you got planned? One of the largest theatre companies in the world coming to Liverpool, 20-22 April which will be fabulous, we have 50 years of the Beatles this year with celebrations all over the city, there's the Global Entrepreneurship Congress which may help business ,particularly smaller ones, to get sponsorship and advice to grow their business. We have the Olympic torch in June, it has it's overnight stay with us and there's the Diamond Jubilee, Matthew Street Festival and a host of other events, it's a fabulous city to be in. Why is Liverpool so enigmatic? It's cultural heritage is so strong, dating right back to the merchant ships and the seamen who brought a wealth of cultural diversity in and out of the City when werethey here. From a very early age Liverpool has been a thriving port and hub of music, fashion and literature. Everyone who comes to Liverpool falls in love with it and the people are so welcoming. We have a sense of pride and community and are proud of what we have achieved, 38
What is a typical day for you? I get up around 5am, check my emails and meetings, look at the various projects I am working on, I'll read through policy briefs, meet officers working on projects and What excites you about your job? developments and then there is The changing nature of people usually an event to attend in the evening. coming up with new ideas, innovative projects that raise Does your job take over your private life? people's eyebrows. Everyone in Yes it does a but but my daughter is Liverpool is proud of the city and grown up now and my partner, he wants the best for it, there is a sometimes goes to events with me, it's positive and upbeat feel about very rewarding. When a councillor the city which is inspiring. attends a meeting we are bringing the support the City has to offer which can hopefully help in providing help advice and sometimes even gives some prestige. even in the most deprived area people have a sense of well being and want Liverpool to look fantastic. And of course we all love a good party.
Has the recent budget cuts affected events? Yes of course we have had massive cuts this year but it will still be a fabulous year of events in Liverpool.

CHRIS ANDRE, older brother of Peter and accomplished musician in his own right, playing the guitar, fiddle and bouzouki. He chats to Lifestyle…..
O
ne of six children, three of whom are in the music industry, his brother Michael is an established DJ while everyone knows Peter. Chris has been playing music since he was a young boy, and is completely self taught. He already has a loyal following in Australia and in Cyprus of his traditional Greek music, but says that music as a career was not a factor in his house as a child. Chris says ‘My mum and dad left Cyprus and went to live in the UK long before any of us kids were born. I always loved music as a child and was very fortunate to have been able to practice at home and teach myself. I believe the ‘musical gene’ as it were came from my father. He has music flowing through his veins and i believe he could have been a phenomenal violin player had he had the time or the chance to practice. Unfortunately (from a musical aspect) for my dad, his priority was always going to be to work hard and provide for his family. I am totally self taught, i don’t read music, but i have a natural ear for it and i certainly know a good melody when i hear one. Some people play music as a job, some just do it part time or when the moment takes them, but for me it is a full time passion. I love it, i love to play and feel what i am playing. I have been told that i portray the emotion of the music i am playing, and that to me is the biggest compliment i can receive from anyone. I love seeing the reaction on peoples faces when i play, its such an amazing experience every time to me’. Describing his style of play as ‘Mediterranean Blues’, Chris says ‘I definitely have my own style of playing, i’d say it is a fusion of Greek, Latin and Blues’. Chris managed his brother Peter in the early years of his career, saying ‘ Peter has done incredibly well, i am so proud of
him. I managed him when he started his career back in Australia in 1993, and in 1995 we both came back to England where he met Claire Powell and signed to her as management. Of course, Claire still manages Peter to this day, so we have all had a wonderful working relationship together for a very long time. I love Peter, as i do all my brothers and my sister (and my mum and dad, nieces, nephews) very very much. We are a super close family that supports each other in anything we do’ While Chris maintains music as his number one priority, he is also involved with a new business venture his brothers have created. They have opened NYCC (New York Coffee Club) in East Grinstead, Surrey. There are already plans to open more venues and there is even interest to franchise the venture overseas. ‘It is very early in the concept but so far it is all looking fantastic and positive for us. My brother Danny is running the operation, i like to go in and test the coffee...... from a quality control perspective only of course haha’ Chris says. With so many plans in the pipeline, this year is turning out to be quite a busy one for Chris. He says ‘2012 is when i am getting all my gigs in place and where i just play as much music as i can. By next year i am hoping to be heading towards performing at World Music festivals. I just have to be positive, believe in myself and get out there and do it!!’ Chris Andre will be performing at The Liverpool Lifestyle Awards, Crowne Plaza, on Saturday the 25th February. AKE-UP WORTH FIGHTING OVER THIS FEBRUARY...
This
seasons trend as seen on Louis Vuitton, Stella, Versace, Max Mara to name just a few. Peach is the new bronze! Its all about using golds, corals and peaches. It is more flattering to the complexion, and gives skin a healthiness and fresh luminous highlight. Leaving you looking sunny and gorgeous, with no fake tan or bronzer in sight! So here is how I created the look to get you ready for summer. To start you need to prepare the skin, this helps to hydrate throughout the day and also hold your make up in place. I used Biotherm’s Skin Ergetic cream gel. I also applied some Elizabeth Arden ‘Good Morning Serum’ primer all over. This gives the skin a lovely smooth and bright finish. Then a slick of Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour lip balm stick to soften lips, apply this at the beginning as it takes a while to be absorbed by the skin. Under the eyes I used Illamasqua’s cream pigment ‘Emerge’ as a concealer, it helps to disguise dark circles. Little tip - Take your concealer up the bridge of your nose as dark circles tend to start there.Your eyes will look much brighter. Then using a duo fibre brush (187 MAC) apply Illamasqua Skin Base foundation all over the face with circular motion so really buff and work into the skin. You want a natural but flawless finish. Add concealer where needed. With a translucent powder lightly dust over with a large powder brush to set foundation. I then contoured the face using MAC brush 138 Tapered Brush and Illamasqua’s pressed powder in PP233. You can use any so long as it is about 2 shades warmer than your natural skin tone. Don’t go to dark though as it will be difficult to blend it for an everyday / wearable look. So to contour the face you want to apply the powder to areas of the face that you want to ‘draw’ in. The temples, jawline, down the center of the nose, and under the cheekbone. This gives the face a structured, sleek dramatic feel. For the blush I used Illamasqua’s cream pigment ‘Emerge’ a cream blush gives a really fresh finish and highlights your cheeks. For the eyes I applied a nude matt colour under brow bone, and a matt brown from the socket line winged out and blend the edges. Over the lid I used a flash of Illamasqua’s cream eye shadow in ‘Exalt’ with a dab of ‘Bronx’ in the middle of the lid and under lower lashes. Then Loreal Creme Lame on the inside corner around the tear duct, this will brighten your eyes. Apply mascara to lashes. To finish off, just dab Illamasqua’s ‘Sonnet’ lipstick in your lips using your finger, to give a natural nude colour. Nita Malata / Silk Make Up

DAN’S OUR MAN....
He’s scouting for models on behalf of the UK’s top modelling agencies.... Hey fashion followers I’m back!! I have had a few weeks off the radar with December being my annual pilgrimage to the end of year fashion mecca, Clothes Show Live. Although the CSL is only a week long it throws out most agencies until the end of January....why? Well during the week, us model scouts can hopefully find hundreds of girls and guys. Once back in the agencies all of those pictures have to be sorted quickly to see who will be invited to London to be seen ‘officially’ before other agencies invite them in. This year at the CSL I found quite a few good people but two people particularly are causing a storm will all the agencies right now.....
can carry over in to spring. Purse strings are tighter than ever this year and so trans-seasonal dressing has never been so popular. Make sure your wardrobe comes complete with the following staple pieces: White shirt (not sheer) – use this to brighten up your dark wintery colours, customise with a piece of silk ribbon as a bow around the neck or with a length of pearls. Carry over to summer by wearing it open or tied in a knot at the waist with rolled sleeves. Pencil skirt – A big SS 2012 trend. It is way too early for manic floral prints and bright neon colours instead pick out a dark blue/black pencil and avoid greys and browns. Shoes – Forget knee high boots, we’ve had no snow! But also forgot peep toe, it’s not yet summer. Instead pick out some pixie influenced ankle boots with a sexy heel. Step out of the dark Christmas party colours and instead go for cream. They’ll look immensely sexy with that long raincoat you should have brought back in October but will look just as sexy during those long summer nights with sun kissed pins.
Meet Joe............. Joe was working at the CSL when I scouted him on his friends stall. He’s currently studying Fashion and interested in men’s tailoring. At just 16 he’s already making Thirdly...AVOID for now: his mark in London and has Peep toe shoes and definitely flip flops – what are you interest from NEXT, Elite and mad?!! Premier. Look out in March for his first photo shoot EXCLUSIVE to Sheer, mesh, vest and spaghetti tops Bare legs. Winter is depressing enough without seeing pale lifestyle monthly. flesh on show. Meet Paige............. Paige was shopping with her family when I spotted her in the long line for the ATM machine. At only 13 she will not model yet but has just been signed by Elite London to take part in the Elite Model Look 2012 – Good Luck Paige! x
The high street is littered with overly bright unseasonal colours, cropped gypsy tops so bold they’d make Jodie Marsh blush and sickly rather than delicate floral prints of daisies and poppies. If you wait until March you’ll have a full selection of White Cowboy Shirt @ River Island - £25.00 Pencil Skirt @ H&M - £19.99 seasonal pieces that you can add to your collections. Ankle Boot/Shoe – Tasha @ Asos - £35.00 Firstly you need to think about how you want to look this coming season. Do you want to be French Nautical, Safari Queen or will you be going tailored and twenties? Remember guys if you are holding an event of any kind and Secondly – now that you have chosen your seasonal want to attract a crowd with an international model scout trend think about what you already have and that you associated with the biggest agencies in the world get in touch dan@lifestylemonthly.co.uk or if you think you have what it takes email me for further details. 47

commitments, football or tennis where we are all members of a local club and the boys just love to be doing sports. Home, dinner, bath, bed and usually homework for Casssius. Lets just say there’s not enough hours inn the day!
Tell us about the spa..
Rouge et Noir Luxury Day Spa is for both Men and Women where we offer a warm friendly environment Here at Rouge et Noir we use only the latest salon exclusive professional luxury skin & hair care treatment/ services, provided in four levels: Spa relaxation Therapeutic Clinical Prescription
Why did you choose the name Rouge et Noir?
Jude Cisse W ife of footballer, Djibril, mother of
four, businesswoman and owner of Rouge et Noir Spa Luxury day spa in Helsby.
Is it very competitive being married to a top sportsman?
I have no idea if its any different being married to a man that isn’t in this kind of profession as I have never been married before, but its not quite how I imagined married life to be. I guess neither of us expected to have had to uproot to another country in such a short space of time. When Djibril signed for Liverpool we had expected many years of being in the city and around our close friends and family. I was and am very career orientated and I like a challenge so being married to a very competitive person suits me as I don’t think I could be with someone whom isn’t. I can relate to his determination and motivation to be successful and we have always encouraged each other, I guess that why I just get it!
Do you enjoy watching the games?
I very much enjoy watching games when Djibril is playing, but the most enjoyment is taking the kids to watch their Dad. They absolutely love it so that’s nice to see. Other than this My son Liam 17yrs and Cassius 5yrs are big Liverpool supporters so they watch every Liverpool game together.
Talk us through a typical day in your life..
Wow... that’s a messy one. My day begins usually around 7am with the boys waking up, breakfast and then school run. I tend to come back home and get on with emails and paperwork with a strong cup of English Tea. Depends on the day but I may be at the Spa, in a meeting or simply sorting out the renovations at our family home with my 22 month old Marley in tow! afterschool its either swimming
I guess its cause its French and Rouge (red) was feminine and Noir (black) is masculine, Red is also in our heats for obvious reasons.
Why did you set it up?
Djibril kept nagging that he didn’t want his wife working so I gave up the childcare business and stopped lecturing when I was expecting our 1st child together. As a result 2 years on I got itchy feet and felt that I needed to be given another challenge so I decided to open up a Luxury Day Spa and vanity seems to be and has been a very strong factor in day to day life’s. I enjoy the business, planning and marketing behind the company. We 1st opened our doors in December 2008.
Tell us about the treatments on offers..

What is your favourite?
If I get the time then defiantly a Guinot Facial followed by a massage, Bliss!
What makes your spa so special?
Its special cause its mine, I treat it like my baby. I put a lot of hard work and knowledge in to it right down to the making and design of our my brochures.
Where do you like to shop?
Depends! I like to do my food shop in my local Tesco or if I need to shop for other things its normally go online or take a trip to Harvey Nichols.
Would you ever consider doing a reality tv show such as Dancing on Ice?
Yes I would never say never, I love dancing so that would be great. I have recently done another reality TV show which sould be aired in the new year so Ill keep you posted. www.twitter.com/rougeetnoirspa | www.rougeetnoirspa.com

JO POWER…
The Man who sees DeaD PeoPle JO POWER…The TV psychic medium from Liverpool spends a morning in the home of Amanda Moss. Power by name and nature…
When Joe came to visit I was unprepared. He was scheduled to turn up after the school run and in the chaos of dropping the children off and school and returning with forgotten homework, I was late and we both pulled into my house at the same time. Why is this man following me, I thought and upon closer inspection though he looked familiar. Having seen the Channel 4 documentary in which he was scrutinised by sceptic Derren Brown, I was unsure as to what to expect. As a believer in the afterlife I wanted to keep an open mind. Straight away the interview became more of a chat with an old friend who hadn’t visited for a while, we struck a chord and chatted about each other’s history. Then my husband, Simon, who is a complete non believer, walked into the room and Joe’s persona changed. He told Simon about his late grandfather and described in details events from the past that only Simon knew about. He then proceeded to give Simon a personality breakdown, “You are stubborn and direct to the point which can come across as cold and distant, but you are not. You are your own person,” he said. “How is your foot?” Joe asked, throwing the question lightheartedly into the
conversation. The previous day Simon had a throbbing pain in it. Joe has appeared in numerous national newspapers and magazines and his psychic gifts are in constant demand with private readings. He also tours sell out theatres across the UK with his evening of clairvoyance. His true interest lies in using in using his medium abilities to solve cold case murders and has helped police with their lines of enquiries several times including the high profile country-wide search for Shannon Mathews. Joe, who has never done a reading on himself, says that the future is looking bright for him., “I am the man who sees dead people. That is the name for my movie, the transcript has already been written. I grew up on a really rough council estate in Skemersdale and even as a child I saw vision. I told one of my mates that he sees life in a different way and he is now in prison serving time for murder.” He says that he would like Robert de Niro of Vin Diesel to play him in his film What does he think about the sceptics then? “Some people say I am an illusionist, I work with power cards which gives me positive thoughts. There’s always so much negative press but I am not out to convert people. A lot of work I do is with vulnerable
people, but I give people the truth, it’s raw, it’s whatever message is sent to me and comes in my head.” Joe is a proud teacher, sharing his knowledge and skills by running courses in his new SixSense Academy, The International Academy of Spiritual Education. What was supposed to be a half hour interview turned into a three hour morning of exciting conversation in which we make dinner plans for a future date. Joe says, “You have to think that we are only alive for a very short time, and there is no answer for what I do or where I get the information from but everyone has got a gift of some sort, it’s just whether people accept it and use it.” As we chat in my office Joe tells me that I am going to write a book (I wrote one when I was 20 and had extracts published but never the full version) and that I will be taking my career abroad (a lifelong ambition of mine since I was a teenager). He adds that something is going to happen to me this year that will change my life, I am not telling, but I am starting buying lottery tickets again, just in case.

Hello Lifestyle Readers! I hope you are all firmly back into the swing of things and that the New Year has plenty in store for you! Since I last spoke to you, I have taken part part in a Panto at the Thameside Theatre not too far way from Essex! I was playing the role of the Genie in Aladdin! I had a great time doing two shows a day for two weeks and starred alongside my friend, former Eastender’s Star Dean Gaffney. It was great fun and as we were so close to ‘The Only Way is Essex’s’ famous nightclub we thought it would be rude not to go and see the famous ‘Sugar Hut’! Just prior to this I spent some time filming for a very special project…I will reveal all very soon! After spending some much needed time with my family and friends after the Panto I decided to take myself away snowboarding in Italy. I had a great time and it was nice to have a break after what was a hectic 2011! I certainly enjoyed the après ski after some grueling runs on the slopes. Watch out for me and Sika with whom I carry out an ambassadorial role to help to promote their adhesive products. We will be at the Totally DIY Show on Sunday 5th February at the NEC in Birmingham so please come and see us! It is so cold at the moment and I would definitely recommend Lifestyle readers to get a pair of Heat Holders. They are the best thermal socks by a mile and have been keeping my toes nice and warm! I bet a few of you received framed pictures or canvasses for Christmas so here are my handy tips to help you get them up onto your walls! Job 79 = Fitting Light Weight Picture Frames
STAGE 1 Once you have decided the height and location of your picture frame, you will need to apply at least 4 wing brackets to the rear of the frame and set these out about 6 inches from each corner of the frame on the left and right sides. STAGE 2 Hold one of the brackets in place and using your small 4V drill and 2mm drill bit, drill some pilot holes into the rear of the frame. This will stop it from splitting when you try to fix the bracket to the frame. Next, drive the 15mm screws through the bracket fixing them to the rear of the frame. Once all four are in position, hold the frame against the wall and, using your pencil, mark the wall through the other hole on the bracket which STAGE 3 stands proud of the frame. STAGE 3 Drill into your mark on the wall with the hammer action drill and 6mm masonry drill bit, apply a 6mm raw plug, and screw your first 45mm screw through one of the brackets. This will take the weight of the frame, then using your spirit level, level up the frame and mark the wall where the other 3 brackets will be fixed. STAGE 4 Repeat the same drilling, plugging and screwing into the wall on the other 3 brackets and your frame should now be firmly fixed level to the wall. 58

rivate pensions seems to be topical now in that we need to save more, in order to have a good quality of life, when we retire. A good option is to put money into bricks and mortar which you can sell, or use the income it generates, to enhance your pension. With rates so low it is an opportune time to buy and let out, not only will you benefit from the income you will have the added luxury of capital growth. This may seem improbable in the current market but since the war property prices have doubled every 8 years. By the time you plan to retire the capital growth should have increased expedentially. At Venmores we can offer advice and guidance to any first time buyers in the buy to let market or even experienced landlords wishing to use an agent. ‘Disappearing Home’ tells the tale of a young girl who faces a difficult childhood growing up amongst her neglecting and abusive parents who have forced her into a childhood of theft and misery. It is an unbelievable story of a child’s unfortunate view of the adult world but at the same time is very much about hope and finding a way out. Although it is a purely fictional novel, the story rings very close to Liverpool author, Deborah Morgan’s heart, who has overcome a number of hardships throughout her childhood Whilst studying for a degree in English, she quickly realised her love

for creative writing and soon after decided to study it as a Masters at Liverpool John Moores University. This is where she began to write the story of young Robyn “I used to travel to the Frankie & Benny’s on Edge Lane where I would write, just to avoid distractions and focus on my project” explained Deborah, “eventually they gave me my own booth where I would go through cups of tea and get all my writing done.” Although she initially only had the intention to submit her work for her creative writing course, the final project proved to be successful enough to be entered into writing competition ‘Pulp Idol’, where it came out as runner-up and was judged by a Tindal Street Press editor and was forwarded onto the publishers. “It took six months to hear back from the publishers and obviously along the way I thought that weren’t interested anymore. When I finally got the call from Alan Mahar,
who runs the company, telling me he loved the book and was very interested in publishing it, I was just left in disbelief.” Following this news, the book began to attract more and more attention from notable Liverpool icons and fellow authors. Terence Davies, Liverpool screenwriter and film director had specifically asked Deborah to write down an account of her childhood, along with Jimmy McGovern, Liverpool scriptwriter who has worked on famous British soap opera ‘Brookside’, who described the book as “wonderful, authentic and compelling”. “I think the next step I really want to take is writing short stories for children, it’s something which has always been particularly interesting to me and I have been researching story ideas recently to get started.” ‘Disappearing Home’ by Deborah Morgan will be in stock at Waterstones from the 1st of March where she will also be holding a book signing. 59

elta taxis, one of the largest taxi firms in Europe, is based in Bootle. It employs 200 staff and 1750 drivers “all doing a good job”. We chatted to a company spokesman, Paul McGloughlin about the award winning company which prides itself on its local workforce.
Their head office is based at their custom built head quarters in Bootle which houses a call centre: book and dispatch, their quality control section to monitor calls and ensure staff are courteous and polite. There is also a technology division for fixing radios, an IT department and a vehicle installation garage for fitting radios and a telematics portal for tracking the speed, g force and style of every driver to ensure they are safe drivers. tell us about your office It reflects the ethos of our business. We sourced local builders and architects and bought the staff in at grass roots level. The ground floor is bricks and mortar, like essence of any company and foundation, then upstairs we have silver screen cladding representing the technology on top
What do you think is at the heart of
Delta’s success?i It’s the changing lifestyle of the travelling public. People have become increasingly sophisticated in how they travel, and Delta has kept ahead of everyone else by responding quicker to their increasing demands. Take Valentine’s day for example, how many couples will want to walk to the bus stop, wait for the next scheduled bus, then walk from the bus stop at the other end to the restaurant? How many will want to walk the streets in search of an orangelighttoflagdown? Andhowmany people will want to remain safe and warm in the comfort of their own home, for a text message to arrive in their pocket detailing the make, model, registration number and colour of the vehicle about to pull up outside which will whisk them away to their chosen destination? What can a customer expect from your company? People want friendlier drivers in smarter more comfortable vehicle, they want professionally trained staff to take their booking in the first place and deal with any follow up enquiries such as lost property. In remaining so utterly focused on the customer, Delta has been able to draw in more passengers, which in turn has drawn in all the highest calibre drivers. High wages and a stunning premises enables us to secure and retain the highest quality call centre operatives. Of course there’s no point having wonderful staff and incredible technology if people don’t know about it… so we have our own creative director, to ensure that we raise the company’s profile in a range of positive and exciting ways, such as free eco friendly shopping bags, free rides in the company sports-car, £50 a day to random lucky bookers, cleverly designed postcards, sponsorship of local community infrastructure such as football stadiums or community centres. How many taxi firms do you think have won awards for marketing… we have.. and all of it in house.

HOW DO I RENT?
with Julie Zest, director of Zest Lets
1 Best websites for rental properties are rightmove.co.uk, zoopla.co.uk, findaproperty. co.uk, primelocation.com and zestlets.co.uk to name but a few. 2 Contact the Agent and book a viewing at a time that suits, always better to view in daylight. 3 After viewing a property you are interested in put down a ‘holding fee’ to secure the property against other interested parties. 4 Pay and fill out the paperwork for the tenant reference checks (there is usually a charge for this), you will need to provide picture id, wage slips, utility bill and bank statements, if you are benefits a guarantor may be required. 5 The credit checks will take from 1-3 working days in general, this will determined if
you can afford the property you are looking to rent. 6 Once credit check are completed and you been given the all clear you will set a date for move in. 7 You will be given an option of either a 6 month or a 12 month AST (Assured Shorthold Tenancy Agreement). 8 There are two things by law that a landlord must provide, an EPC (energy performance certificate) which lasts 10 years and a current Gas Safety Check (needed every year). 9 On move in day you will need to pay the first month’s rent and ensure your deposit has also been paid in full. The deposit must be held in a government deposit scheme. 10 You will then be given the keys and asked to set up a

On agreeing the Hatton Garden development last year the council stated “This type of housing proposed meets an identified need and is in keeping with nearby developments. This innovative development proposal will make efficient and sensitive reuse of a fine, Grade II-listed building and therefore make a valuable contribution to this part of the city centre.” Managing Director Nigel Russell said: “At a time when significant job cuts are being made in industry as a result of the economic downturn, I am delighted that Middle England Developments / Penlake Ltd are able to create employment opportunities due to its expansion. There are vast opportunities open to us within our sector and we look forward to recruiting new members of staff to our business.” 63

BUSINESS FOCUS... Are you PLUGGED in? Business development advice from Karl Fischer Consultant at Karl Fischer .Biz
Topic: TWITTER
Do you want more Twitter followers? Twitter can be a great way to market to and engage customers. The key word is “engage.” Five engaged followers are much better than Fifty passive auto-followers. Here are six ways to build and maintain an “engaged” Twitter audience: Provide. We can’t all be witty or clever. But we can all offer something: deals, discounts, samples, promotions, advice, assistance, conversation... offer something of value. Followers will appreciate the gesture, and if what you offer really is worthwhile, they’ll spread the word and market for you. Use special offers and promotions to find out what customers value. When you hit on the right mix, your followers will retweet and your twitter following will grow and grow. Talk about others. A great way to make a connection is to simply respond to something another person or business tweeted and mention them. Most people can’t resist checking out what other people say about them. Time permitting, I regularly check for mentions or messages on my account. But don’t tweet or retweet unless you also feel your audience and potential customers will benefit from what you send. Always think value first, potential connection second. Don’t become a spammer! Play in your sandbox. It’s tempting to tweet about a broad range of topics. Don’t! Stick to your area of focus. Choose a niche and stay there. You will slowly build an engaged following when people know they can get lots of useful information about your niche. Any followers not interested in your niche are of little to no value anyway. Remember, its not all about how many followers you have. Its about the value of your followers. Be current. Commenting on breaking news is smart, since timely relevance attracts a lot of interest. But there’s a definite timeliness window; fall outside it and you lose. Either tweet breaking news about your niche immediately, or wait a few hours, weeks or months and let hindsight and reflection add flavor to your tweet. If you can’t be (relatively) first, let it go. Never send out stale tweets. And always be accurate. You don’t want to look stupid tweeting a falsehood. Sometimes its best to let if go. If the story is too good to be true then questions is it true? Be accurate at all times. And be responsive. An incoming tweet is like an email; whoever sent it expects a response. Make it a goal to answer tweets within one to two hours max. Time permitting. If you’re lucky enough to have someone initiate the process and tweet you, don’t spoil it by waiting too long to respond. If you are busy then try and catch up on your tweets later that day. And respond to your tweets. Followers will unfollow if you never “engage”. You can “engage” with Karl on Twitter @karlfischer_biz www.karlfischer.biz
THIS IS IT, ONE MONTH INTO 2012, where are you going? No excuses, no regrets One of the best ways to deal with short term setbacks is to have a clear focus on the long term plans. When we do this the short term challenges are just that, challenges to attempt to knock us off our stride and derail our plans. They are only a test of our resolve and our commitment to the bigger objective. The definition of insanity is to do the same thing and expect a different result. So what do you want to achieve in 2012? What are you prepared to do to achieve this objective? If you could fail this year, what would you truly wish to attempt? I challenge you to take a few minutes to answer this. Isn’t it exciting? Motivation breaks down to 2 things our Motive to take Action. So what will be your motive in 2012? If we can find the true answer to this, it will be this can carries through the challenges that will no doubt come our way. 5 absolute keys to a great year are outlined below, don’t short cut this short cut, you will go around in circles. Follow these 5 steps to make 2012 outstanding. The first thing is to take stock, what has gone well for you this year? What have you done this year to make you feel proud? I know most of us are that busy working to pay the bills we seldom stop to celebrate and appreciate the good things we have achieved. 1 REFLECT Then we need to write down the things we want to improve and achieve over the next 12 months. What would you want to celebrate this time next year? Be specific and write it down. Keep a copy of your goals and plans with you or at least somewhere where you can see it daily. Break your 12 month plan down to the next 90 days. 2 WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS Now you have goals and pictures of success for 2011 create a plan to achieve, this is the how to. Think about WHAT you need to do. How you’re going to do this. WHEN do you need to do this? WHERE do these steps take place? WHO can support your progress and most importantly understand WHY you’re doing this. You may need to stop doing something to enable you to have the space to take on these new behaviours. 3 CREATE A PLAN So you have reflected on this year set goals for next year, wrote down a plan to achieve. The next absolute key is to get started. Start and don’t stop until you have achieved what you set out to do. It’s critical you have 90 day mile stones to allow you to reflect on your progress which will help you to stay Focused. 4 START. 5 STAY FOCUSED Absolute keys to a great year are outlined below: Reflect Goal Set Plan Start Focus For further information contact darren@dasala.co.uk
