Lifestyle EDITOR'S LETTER
december ISSUE 80 A note from our editor...
HELLO LOVELY LIFESTYLE READERS It’s starting to look a bit like Christmas, that’s because it is! I can hardly contain my excitement. This for me, is the most wonderful time of the year, I put my decorations up on the 1st and the Christmas CD is on loop for a whole month. People say that Christmas is just for children, I don’t believe that. In our house my two year old twin boys will certainly be at the centre of all the festivities - and rightly so, as they are the centre of our lives – but it’s not just about them. Christmas, for me, is about the whole family and close friends. Where I get the opportunity to show them all how much I love and appreciate them. Perhaps, in the hope that they put up with me and my eccentricities for yet another year. 2014 has been another great year for Liverpool. From the return of the Giants, to a summer of fantastic music and art festivals jotted in and around the centre. But already I am looking forward to 2015, The Lifestyle Awards, The Fashion and Beauty Awards and Fashion Week – lots of dates for the diary, and lots of frocks to buy – I can’t wait. May you and yours enjoy an absolutely fabulous Christmas filled with family, friends, good food and plenty of festive cheer! 4

There
Liverpool legend
is only one Pete Price,
official Liverpool leg-end, friend of the stars, keeper of the late night radio confessional box, star of panto, columnist, and now, he has been inducted this month into the Radio Academy Hall of Fame. This, in case you don’t already know; is the UK radio industry’s tribute to those legendary voices who make and have made an outstanding contribution to the sound of British radio and to British cultural life. On appearing in Aladdin this year he said, “I don’t like Christmas, not since my mum died. But I do love doing panto, and the Empire’s is the biggest panto in Liverpool, so it’s only right that I’m in that one. I have been doing them for years – this is my 29th so far. This time around I play a doddering emperor who loses his memory - they call it type casting! I think panto is very important to the theatre. Going to see panto every year is, for many children, their first visit to the theatre, it’s something they will always remember. They are the next generation that we need to appeal to. Those who will grow up and carry on coming to the theatre and eventually bringing their own children” On is highlight of 2015, “My Highlight of 2015 has got to be hosting the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards. I have hosted it twice before and I love doing it so much that it’s the first date for my diary. I love Amanda, she’s brilliant and more than a little crazy. I genuinely get excited about the press she runs. I hope she’s finished breast feeding by then though, I’ve seen enough of her boobs! But really, the awards are a great night out and of course everybody wins. It’s about championing local business in and around the city, for all those business owners who work so hard. It’s fantastic that there is a whole night, dedicated to them, where they get recognition for all their hard work. And it’s always a great night. I’m already looking forward it.”

Lifestyle news SOCIAL CARE SUPPORT PLANS TO BE SCHEME PRAISED CONSIDERED LIVERPOOL City Council is set BY CITIZENS to approve plans which will see most of its day centres remain ADVICE open, following a major review and LIVERPOOL City Council’s scheme to help people hit by welfare reforms has been praised by the Citizens Advice Bureau.
L
iverpool Citizens Support Scheme - which replaced DWP Crisis Loans and Community Care Grants in 2013 helped almost 9,000 people in its first year. The scheme is focused around Urgent Needs - mainly food, fuel and clothing, and Home Needs such as furniture, white goods and household items which are supplied by Liverpool Furniture Resource Centre. Citizens Advice have highlighted Liverpool’s scheme in a new report on their website titled “Making Welfare Work Locally”. They say the city’s approach stood out because it was “designed to be flexible and appropriate changes were made during the year as lessons were learned”. Citizens Advice Chief Executive Gillian Guy said: “When we spoke to staff at Liverpool City Council, we were particularly impressed by how officers were keen that the scheme was able to respond quickly to provide help to people in urgent need as well as help with furniture and household goods.” More information about the Liverpool Citizens Support Scheme, and details of how to apply, can be found at http://liverpool. gov.uk/benefits-and-grants/liverpoolcitizens-support-scheme/ 18
consultation.
T
he aim is to ensure the city council can continue to support the most vulnerable in the face of £156 million of Central Government funding cuts over the next three years, while at the same time delivering £3 million of savings per year. The plans were developed following an informal consultation with service users, staff and carers since March and are designed to preserve the council’s skills and expertise in looking after some of the most vulnerable clients, and make better use of some of the council’s buildings. One change that has been made following consultation is that Geneva Road homelessness hostel will continue as a women only building, and not be open to men as originally proposed. It follows concerns that women fleeing domestic violence would be put off living at the hostel. Deputy Mayor and Cabinet member for adult social care, Councillor Roz Gladden, said: “The consultation has found that our proposals are broadly in line with the expectations that service users, families and carers have for our services. In an ideal world, we would love to continue running all of our centres, but the huge cuts we have imposed on us by the Government mean that we have to find new ways of continuing to support people who receive care.”

Lifestyle news THE HOUSE OF FALL INTO SCOUSE - ROCKING READING BOOTLE
T
he House of Scouse is a non profit organisation which is set up to help raise funds for organisations based in the Merseyside area. We are currently in our fourth year of fundraising, in which time we have raised £8,800 for worthy causes. On Saturday 13th December 2014, House of Scouse will have a Christmas festival of music and entertainment for all ages, which is to raise funds for Mama Margaret’s Pensioners club in Bootle. Mama Margaret’s is a small group of pensioners who have been away from social activities for years due to lack of care from the community or just plain forgotten about due to their age. This group helps put on tea and coffee mornings, Bingo sessions and also organises days out for these amazing people and we are trying to support this charity with our events. The festival will be an annual event to be held in The Labour club on Knowsley Road in Bootle.

A NEW drive has been launched to encourage families in Liverpool to read together.
F
all into Reading is a new city council initiative to celebrate and stimulate reading habits among families who live in the north of the city. Recent research showed that children who were read to less than once a week at the age of five had, by the time they were seven, a reading level half a year behind those who had been read to daily. Councillor Orr, who is the Mayoral Lead for Reading Performance, said: “It’s essential never to underestimate the importance of reading to children. Not only does it improve their literacy levels but it also fires up their imagination and unleashes their creativity.” Fall into Reading is part of City of Readers which is a project which aims to create a new generation of readers and fulfil the Mayor’s pledge to improve education standards and ensure that no child, if able, leaves primary school unable to read. after gaining a distinction in her ABRSM Grade 8 examination. Eliza’s success continued when, after playing to panels in both Manchester and London, Eliza won a place in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, age 15. Becoming one of the 18 cellists within the orchestra meant that Eliza was invited to attend 3 residencies a year, as well as re-auditioning every October to keep her place. For the last two summers Eliza has performed in the BBC Proms in addition to carrying out outreach work for the National Youth Orchestra by visiting primary schools across Merseyside and sharing her love of classical music. Following in her musical footsteps is brother, Edward Carew, 15, who plays trumpet also with NYO. Recently winning the Junior Royal Northern College of Music concerto competition, Eliza will now be performing Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations with JRNCM symphony orchestra in July 2015. Eliza’s hard work and commitment over the years was once again rewarded in October this year when she took the journey from her home in Wirral to the Craxton Studios, Hampstead, London where she was required to play 2 pieces and attend an interview with tutors from the NYO and conductor Gerry Cornelius. Her outstanding audition resulted in Eliza receiving the wonderful news, on her way home from school a few days later, that she was to be named the Principal Cellist of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Thrilled sixth form student Eliza said she was extremely thankful to Birkenhead High School Academy for making provision for her cello playing. Director of Music, Chris Watson said: “This is an outstanding achievement and a real reward for all the hours of rehearsal and travel that Eliza puts in every week. It is brilliant to see such dedication and perseverance resulting in national recognition.”

Dr. Martens buckles up for the winter The Dr. Martens AW-14 range has sophistication stamped all over it and paired with the brand’s distinctive air-cushioned sole pattern, our feet will be planted firmly on the ground whatever the weather this season. However it’s not all about the classic Docs’ silhouette we’ve come to know and love. This has been evolved into a number of simple and smart styles, entitled the Refined collection. The added degree of refinement is achieved using different materials, colours and details. For men, the Harrow Kenton and Leigh styles make for premium quality products designed to be worn with a suit. The leather has a polished finish and the traditional yellow stitch is replaced with a contrast tan welt, all set on a new last that is sleek and formal. For women, the cherry red Teresa boot features a smooth, high-shine leather and a buckled strap which wraps around the new, more slender design – a detail also echoed on the Lorne shoe. The accessories offer alternative gift ideas perfect for stocking fillers this Christmas from leather belts, wallets and satchels to supersoft gingham scarves. To check out the range, visit the Dr. Martens store at 10 Manesty’s Lane in Liverpool ONE or get in touch with the team on 0151 708 4157. KENTON

Think Do you really need an ambulance?
999 should only be used in life-threatening or potentially life-threatening cases. For urgent health care advice, people should call 111, or visit their GP, Urgent Care Centre or Pharmacy.
October saw an increase of 8.8% in 999 calls compared to last year
Winter is the Trust’s busiest time of year, bringing about an increase in demand and a rise in activity
Non life-threatening cases maybe passed to the urgent care desk for further triage and self-care advice
For more information visit www.nwas.nhs.uk
The Trust needs to prioritise calls so less urgent calls may wait longer for a response and those who call 999 might not get an emergency ambulance

W ith the festive season in full swing it means
that all things sequined, jewelled and showered in glitter are back in full-force, and that's not just limited to our outfits. Our make-up can often make or break an outfit and Head Makeup Artist, Michael Perks, knows this better than anyone. His make-up style is perfect for the party season, being known for his signature ‘glitter smokes’ eye make-up that can certainly add sparkle to any outfit. Whether it’s a night out, fashion shoot or theatre production, Michael easily adapts his makeup style to suit each occasion and Liverpool Fashion Week (LFW) opened a huge window of opportunity for him to showcase this. After seeing his work ethic, Creative Director of Hair and Make-up Jane Bellis invited him to be Head Make-up artist, to which he gladly accepted. The role meant managing a team of 10 people and overseeing all make-ups on the models to make sure they were correct for the designers look. Never one for subtly, his dramatic makeup style was perfect for LFW and for helping the designers creations come to life. With a team of amazing make-up artists, hairdressers, models, photographers and designers onboard, Michael said, “It was amazing to see how we could take something from just us make-up artists and our work, to the full show”. Life as Head- Make-up Artist can often mean sacrificing weekends off and working long hours but Michael said, "I never feel like I’m working, I enjoy it that much. One day I could be doing a Beauty Pageant in the morning and a wedding in the afternoon, or three weddings in one day. It's all worth it for the finished product". He is currently working on a number of projects that will see him through to the New Year, including being the Creative Director for a theatre production, make-up training clients and planning for Manchester Fashion Week in May 2015. ost people know Noel Fielding best as his eccentric zoo-keeper alter ego, Vince Noir, from The Mighty Boosh. However, in the years since that particular smash hit series, Noel has continued to bring his distinctive surreal style of comedy to the stage and screen – he has just taken his show on the road with a massive UK tour, An Evening with Noel Fielding. His latest TV programme, Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy, was set in a café on the side of a Hawaiian volcano. The eating establishment was staffed by Andy Warhol and a chocolate finger who was also a PE teacher, as well as Noel himself, who played the straight guy to his weird and wonderful companions. This series got its best viewing figures to date, proving yet again that the British love bizarre humour… “It was just like that with the Boosh,” says Fielding. “It was such a weird show, Julian [Barratt, his writing partner and co-star] and I thought it was pretty mental how big it had got, considering that we didn’t compromise on anything, we didn’t leave anything out, and we were doing a show about a Crack Fox and a transsexual merman with a ‘mangina’. It was pretty amazing!’ A decade after The Mighty Boosh first aired on BBC Three, Fielding has established himself as a central figure in the UK comedy scene, having already done gigs at Wembley Arena and the O2. “Last time we were on a massive tour, we went out in Marilyn Manson’s tour bus!” Noel says. “It became like we were in Pink Floyd or something…” Once the Boosh reached its peak of fan mania, Julian Barratt wanted to take a step back out of the limelight. “It got to the stage where everyone wants a picture of you, and I don’t think Julian was comfortable with that whole ‘celebrity’
thing,” explains Fielding. He, on the other hand, threw himself into the London party scene, often spotted out and about in Camden with his showbiz pals Amy Winehouse, Razorlight, and the Geldof sisters. “I’m not very good if I don’t work; I’m a bit of a workaholic and I start going out partying, doing stupid things – I get bored very easily so I have to keep stimulating my mind,” says Fielding. “I wanted the Boosh fans to get on board with Luxury Comedy,” he says, “because I feel like I lost a few of them.” Now that his TV show has picked up steam, Fielding has focused his creative efforts into making An Evening with Noel Fielding into a spectacular tour. “There’s live animation, which takes ages to work out how to do, live music, brand new stand up, which I’m excited about; it’s a really complicated and expensive show – I always want to put on a show that costs as much to put on as it takes in tickets!” he laughs. Fielding is excited to get out to some slightly smaller venues; “It’s more intimate, which is actually better for comedy. When you are performing at the O2, it’s so massive that the laughter takes 30 seconds to get back to you, which is weird,” he says. Fielding’s adoring fans will be eager to see him on this forthcoming tour; not least because he’s bringing out The Moon, who was his favourite character to play even before the Boosh. As an experienced performer, Fielding has put everything he has into making this tour enjoyable and successful. “I just want people to come away thinking ‘wow, I really enjoyed that’,” he says. For both Luxury Comedy and this run of live shows, Fielding has tapped into all the resources of his comedy ‘juice’. “If this doesn’t work, I’ve got nothin’!” he laughs. The UK tour An Evening with Noel Fielding runs until 12 December. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster.co.uk
"When we water a plant, we water the root not the leaves, balance starts within" Tracy McMahon
244 Longmoor Lane, Fazakerley, Liverpool L9 OEP 0151 284 4435. www.buddhatherapies.com My name is Tracy McMahon and I am the owner of a Holistic Health Spa, Buddha Therapies. I am an Integrated Health Specialist and I specialise in Fertility treatments for both men and women. The clients I have treated all had different problems in conceiving from Miscarriages, Endometriosis, Polycystic Ovaries, Stress, Abortion, Pituitary disorders, Egg donation plus more, over the last 4 years I have helped many people to conceive with and without the use if IVF intervention. I specialise in treating symptoms and conditions at the root and assess the body for physical and emotional weaknesses, timing the treatments with their cycle, (providing they have one). I utilise many of the therapies I practise from Kore Therapy, Auricular, Cosmetic and Clinical Acupuncture, Cupping therapy, Amno fu, Qi gong, Cranial Sacral Therapy, Korean Hand therapy, Tui nah, Aromatherapy, Reflexology plus many more and use them as an “Individual Prescription” to find the best course of treatments. Alternative and Complementary Therapies for Fertility are extremely effective, and many people do not realise that there is help
from other sources and that it is extremely important to start treatments to strengthen eggs, organs and most importantly the mind as soon as possible.
£30.00 per 1 hour session Testimonials “After being told natural conception would be impossible I tried alternative methods. While waiting for IVF I found Buddha Therapies, who after my consultation recommended a course of treatments to try to release the blockages that were preventing conception. The treatments consisted of acupuncture and pelvic manipulation, all personalised to my needs. Fast forward to today and I’m 20 weeks pregnant and I truly believe this was all down to Tracy and her healing hands. Words cannot express our gratitude for her help x Rose age 40.” “Tracy was referred to me by a friend. I have a busy life and was finding it difficult to relax. Tracy noticed imbalances within my body which she wanted to address before she started to treat me for fertility, she explained “When the mind and body is well, you will have a good flow of energy so it will be easier to treat you to help you conceive”. I received 4 treatments which she timed with my cycle and I am now 11 weeks pregnant. I feel this wouldn’t have happened with out these treatments, Thank you Tracy, all 45 my love, LL

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM ODEON LIVERPOOL ONE!

Older but none the wiser: Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels return in a long-awaited sequel to the comedy classic. It's been 20 years since Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) spoke to one another. They haven't fallen out. It's just that Lloyd has been playing a typically stupid prank with a very drawn-out idiotic punchline. But no matter. The dimwit duo are back together and they're embarking on an important quest. Harry's discovered that he has a long-lost daughter by Fraida From the director oF last
Felcher (Kathleen Turner). What's more, he needs a new kidney - which gives him another good reason for tracking her down. Trouble is that as soon as Lloyd claps eyes on a photo of Harry's lovely daughter, he falls in love! The stage is set for another hilarious feast of numbskullery. It also sees the return of Harry's fabulous, doggy-shaped Mutt Cutts van.

Diabetes UK launches new Care in School Helpline Diabetes UK has launched a new helpline
to help ensure children with Type 1 diabetes get the support they need to make the most of their time at school. The helpline has been launched as part of the charity’s Type 1 diabetes: Make the Grade campaign, which aims to make sure children with Type 1 diabetes are healthy and happy at school. The new helpline is supported by the charity’s National Charity Partnership with Tesco and will provide phone and email support to parents who are trying to get the care their child is entitled to at school. The new helpline follows a landmark new law, which means for the first time all schools in England are legally required to provide children with medical conditions such as Type 1 diabetes, asthma and epilepsy with

the support they need at school. Diabetes UK campaigned for this change in the law because while some schools were already doing a good job of supporting children with Type 1 diabetes there are too many examples of where children with the condition struggled to get the support that they need. Sally Caldwell, Diabetes UK Care in School Helpline Manager, said: “Our volunteers will be able to let parents know what support their children should be getting from their school, how they can make an official complaint and answers to important questions such as what should be in their child’s Individual Healthcare Plan’. To order free packs or contact the Care in School Helpline, call 0345 123 2399 or go to www.diabetes.org.uk/schools. 47

lthough it has been visited by fewer people than have been to the Moon, and lies two miles down in perpetual blackness on the bottom of the North Atlantic, it is technically possible to visit the Titanic and see its tragic remains with your own eyes. Sadly, the same cannot be said for another even more recent, historic and important part of Liverpool’s contribution to world history, which once occupied a space just a few feet beneath our city centre. Although a creditable reconstruction and an enjoyable place to visit, especially when the marvellous Xander & The Peace Pirates play there on Sunday nights, the current 10 Mathew Street is regrettably not ‘where it all began’. What was allowed to happen to The Cavern Club by the elected custodians of our city is as every bit as tragic as the decline of the docks. But unlike the global effects of containerisation, this was clearly something which could and should have been prevented. Thank Lennon, then, that ‘a creative compromise’ seems to have been reached which should avoid a similar fate befalling not only The Kazimier and but also the legendary Nation on Wolstenholme Square, the birthplace and spiritual home of Cream.
48
The universities are now Liverpool’s second largest employers after the NHS and it must never be forgotten that the demand for places to study in Liverpool, which created
this phenomenal growth over the last two decades, is largely due to the power of dance music and the universal appeal to teenagers of one fantastically successful world class club. A generation of bright young things wanted to move to Liverpool because of Cream and the vibrant nightlife that the city can now boast because of it, which continues to attract visitors from all over the British Isles and beyond. The Kazimier’s importance as a medium sized live music venue can’t be over-looked either, since it makes performances in the city not only economically viable for many local artists but also for touring musical deities such as Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and The Jungle Brothers, who both graced its stage earlier this year.

CITY’S GASTRO REVOLUTION COOKS UP A STORM
N
orthern Ireland has been hitting the culinary heights recently, thanks to rave restaurant reviews and regular television appearances by well-known chefs such as Paul Rankin, Michael Deane and Danny Millar – the latter appearing on BBC cookery programmes, Saturday Kitchen and The Great British Menu where he won the Northern Ireland region for two consecutive years. Northern Ireland's capital city, Belfast is a vibrant and dazzling destination that has been riding a wave of optimism that seems to be growing in momentum. Nowhere is this feeling of confidence more evident than in the area of hospitality. And thanks to leading ferry company, Stena Line whose fares start from as little as £89* single, car and driver, there’s no brighter place for an autumn car-cation full of good food, fun and Irish flavours than Belfast. The city has a wealth of wonderful bars and restaurants for foodies of all tastes and budgets. Visitors can enjoy fine dining at a reasonable price in the award-winning Deanes and James Street South, both recently awarded the Bib Gourmand award by Michelin, and the highly recommended, Ox; enjoy fivestar luxury in the opulent

Victorian and Art Deco splendour of The Merchant Hotel's Great Room restaurant and bar and maybe sample an original Trader Vic’s Mai Tai – at £750, reportedly, the world's most expensive cocktail; or enjoy traditional Irish favourites such as champ, colcannon, boxty and the famous Ulster Fry at any number of good quality pubs and unique restaurants, like Made in Belfast. For the tenth year running Belfast will welcome back its Christmas Continental Market hosted on the grounds of the historic City Hall. The City Hall will be transformed into a bustling Continental village providing a great shopping and dining experience with food and drink from across the world on offer. Marc Casey from Stena Line said, "The city's restaurants and bars have embraced the positivity of recent years and risen to the challenge of attracting custom from all over the UK. Stena Line has responded to the demand for convenient, affordable and hasslefree travel to Northern Ireland with a range of great-value fare options to suit families, couples and groups of all sizes, who wish to experience Belfast’s food and drink and exciting vibe for themselves.” Visit Stena Line’s website www.stenaline.co.uk and check their Low Fares Finder for the latest deals.

aving tried the Brazilian experience on a few occasions in the city centre, I was excited to try South Roads latest new restaurant -Rio Brasil. In the immensely popular heart of Waterloo, Rio Brazil is situated by the new Champs bar at the old Antonellis Italian restaurant. This is the first Brazilian restaurant to open in Sefton and I am extremely glad to say it did not disappoint at all. The atmosphere was both warm and friendly. The staff are extremely attentive, and guide you try the` as much as you can eat buffet`

then you are courted by the passadors (meat carvers) who tempt you to try 15 different cuts of meat from Lamb, Chicken Pork and Beef. Every cut was absolutely delicious. The girls all had a fabulous cocktail whilI had a few bottles of Brazilian beer to accompany our meal. The whole menu is superbly priced and you would find it hard to find a restaurant that’s as good a value for money. Even my daughter- a notoriously fussy eatertruly loved the experience, and has already booked to return with friends. As the saying of the restaurant goes-`sit back, relax and enjoy`, which is exactly what we did. I look forward to returning.

CRAIG PHILLIP’S
DIY...
Hello Lifestyle Readers!
The festive season is upon us and it won’t be long before Christmas is here! I have been busy as usual but I’m looking for ward to some much-needed time off fairly soon! I attended the National Painting and Decorating Show 2014 which was a fantastic event at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. With more exhibitors, more products and more demonstrations than ever before, this year’s show was a ‘must see’ for all professional painters and decorators. It was great to see the very latest ideas and innovations on display from both UK and overseas manufacturers as well as practical demonstrations. I attended the event on behalf of paint-spraying specialists Wagner and offered demonstrations to show visitors the benefits of their range of products. Wagner aim to make painting simple and their range is great for everyone from novices to professionals. They offer a complete range of products stretching from single components in the areas of feeding, mixing, controlling and application, right up to products for complex large-scale installations. As ambassador of Checkatrade, I supported an event run in partnership with Kent County Council in a bid to protect the county’s 1.5m residents from rogue traders and support legitimate businesses. I joined my 60 Minute Makeover co-star Linda Barker offering practical advice and top tips on a range of home makeover and DIY topics, answering questions and chatting with visitors which was fantastic fun! That’s about it from me this month my friends. I’ve included another useful DIY tip in case you need to do some final work to the house before all the family are round this Christmas! Until next time… All the best,

draft excluders around doors or windows Materials: • Draft excluder kit Tools: • Jigsaw or small hacksaw • Cordless screw driver • panel pin hammer • Tape measure
Once you have chosen the type of draft excluders, cut to size starting with the top piece first, always remember when cutting any materials measure twice and cut only once! When applying always keep the door or window firmly closed, push the draft strip tight to the closed corner edge to prevent any gaps between the door and the frame once it is fitted and the door is fully closed, Using a panel pin hammer gently tap the small nails to fix the strip to the frame, then repeat this when fitting the same strips to the both left and right sides of the door frame. The bottom door draft strip is a little different this will again need cutting to size using a jigsaw or small hand held hacksaw as it is often an aluminium material with brush like bristles along with manufactured pre-drilled pilot holes. You will have to close the door first and hold the base strip into position to mark with a pencil then drill some very small fine pilot holes into the door, before screwing the final strip to the bottom of the door.

LiverpooL scoops top cruise accoLade
Liverpool cruise terminal welcomed 46 ships and around 56,000 passengers in 2014. The estimated boost to the local economy provided by the cruise industry was around £4.4 million.
For the second year, Liverpool has been named the UK’s best port of call by the world’s largest cruise review website. ‘Cruise Critic’ – sister site of ‘Trip Advisor’ – has named Liverpool as the ‘Best UK Port of Call’, choosing the city based on the fact so many attractions are within walking distance of the terminal. The warm welcome visitors receive when they arrive in Liverpool and the rich historic architecture were also factors in the city taking the top prize. On Liverpool’s win, the Cruise Critic editors commented: "Much of what Liverpool has to offer cruise-ship visitors is right in the city centre, alongside the waterfront where ships dock. The revitalised Albert Dock houses numerous restaurants and attractions." Assistant Mayor and Liverpool City Council’s cabinet member for culture and tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “This is highly prestigious award and we’re delighted to win it for two consecutive years. Cruise Critic is one of the first places travellers look when contemplating a cruise, and we’re so pleased that Liverpool has taken the top-spot and the glowing review of our port will hopefully attract more people to choose the city as a cruise destination.” Liverpool’s Cruise Manager, Angie Redhead, said: “Our cruise guests continually tell us that they love our city centre location, our award winning attractions as well as the genuine friendliness and warmth of the Liverpool people who go out of their way to extend the hand of friendship to them.” 60
Boat Show plans for city
PLANS are underway which could see a brand new maritime event come to Liverpool in 2015. Discussions have been taking place for the city to host The Northern Boat Show next year, brought here by Carnah Events. It would be part of the International Mersey River Festival, running from the 5-7 June, and would see world class sailing and power boats head for the Mersey attracting buyers from across the country. Richard Milbourn, Event Director of the new show said: “We’re looking forward to capturing this untapped market. As an experienced skipper with an International Certificate of Competence I have a passion for sailing and boats. I understand the marine leisure market and the logistics involved in presenting a spectacular boat show in the heart of Liverpool.” For more details about the boat show, visit www.northernboatshow.co.uk

Paris voted top romantic weekend destination... Paris voted top romantic weekend destination... ...but Amsterdam is best for budget conscious couples
T
he romantic weekend break in Europe is often seen as a critical stepping stone when it comes to the early days of a relationship – but rather than opt for the delights of Prague, Vienna or Bruges, it seems most of us Brits, would choose the enduring romantic destinations of Paris, Rome or Venice. Of course, all three cities are chic and romantic. But ahh Paris, in any season it is stunning, but at Christmas there is no place more romantic, or holds that extra jour de vie.
In a survey of over 2000 people by ICE – International Currency Exchange, the travel money provider, these cities were voted the most romantic in Europe. Paris interestingly also scored highly for value for money, just behind Amsterdam, which was voted top for those on a budget. Perhaps surprisingly, 14% of men have returned to the same city with a new partner for a romantic weekend and 9% of women have done the same. 63% spend between £200 and £499 on the cost of the weekend, and when it comes to the allimportant romantic meal, 27% said they’d spend no more than £74 for two including wine for both diners suggesting visitors to Italy and France are more likely to sample the culinary delight of pizza or steak frites rather than truffles or soufflé.
62
A mere 7% of men and just 5% of women would push the boat out when it came to splashing the cash on a candlelit supper for two costing £200.

Lifestyle the last word with amanda moss
Hello december Farewell 2014, it’s been a brilliant year, I can’t complain.
The magazine has survived another year, we haven’t missed a month printing an issue for the 6th consecutive year, I think that’s worth a round of applause and we’re ending it with an equally fantastic issue. Well it is the most wonderful time of the year. My events have gone with a whizz and a bang and next year is already shaping up to be even bigger and more glamorous; The Bierkeller Liverpool Lifestyle Awards, Liverpool Fashion Week, the UK Fashion & Beauty Awards and my new venture, Manchester Fashion Week. I have no regrets; 66
I live my life, take risks, don’t worry about the future because who knows what may happen. All I know is that I love my work, I love my Lifestyle community, my fashion week family and of course my real family. I set up the business in order to gain a balance between my work and children, to ensure I can work and maintain an income and yet still be at home with the kids every day after school. I am hopefully building a bank of happy memories for them to cherish. I recommend you do the same…. have a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and an exceptionally Happy New Year to you all. See you stylishly on the other side,
Amanda Moss
