A note from our editor...
Hello lovely Lifestyle readers! The sky is blue, the sun is out, the twins are at nursery and I’m in shorts and sandals typing in the garden, life is pretty good. What is it about the sun shining that makes everything just that little bit better? While I have long abandoned my New Year’s resolutions, I see the summer months as the perfect time for a fresh, healthy start. Operation midriff is now ago once again, helped along by my training for Race For Life and a meat free May. I tend to run at night, not because the
4
lower temperature makes running easier no, it’s because after 10 paces my face is like a beetroot and I’m knacked. But as with the past few years I am determined to run the full 3 miles. So if you see me in training, very sweaty and red faced, give me a thumbs up or oxygen which-ever is most appropriate at the time. If you fancy a challenge, and all for a most worthy cause there is still time to sign up and get training, and for those who have already signed up, good luck and keep running! Lots of love,

christie rules the catwalk
interview with
Rachel Christie By Amanda Moss
As Liverpool Fashion Week’s sister event, Manchester Fashion Week, prepares to wow the North West at the end of the month, we chat exclusively to Rachel Christie who will be modelling on the opening night…
W
HEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO MODELLING? I was first scouted for modelling at the age of 12 at a skate park in Ladbroke Grove, West London. They asked me to model for the front cover of a sports magazine. I had no idea what I was doing, but was considered a natural. Being so young, it was only something I did for fun. I didn’t start taking it seriously until I was 19.
10
YOU WERE PERSONALLY MENTORED BY CAPRICE, WHAT TIPS DID SHE GIVE YOU? Caprice was great! She taught me how to walk and how to present myself. She even schooled me on which makeup best suited me and how to apply it.
HOW DID NAOMI CAMPBELL HEAR ABOUT YOU? When I became the first black women to win Miss England, it made International news, and that’s how Naomi heard about me. It was a very surreal and overwhelming moment to receive a personal letter from her inviting me to model for her Fashion for Relief Show. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT TO DATE? That’s an easy question. Becoming a mother to the most wonderful little boy. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MODELLING CAMPAIGN? The best campaign that I ever did was Adidas, that was a lot of fun, and helped me with my sporting career. My favourite
Lifestyle
christie rules the catwalk
campaign currently is anything featuring Cara Delevigne, and the new Givenchy campaign with Kendall Jenner. They both rocked London Fashion Week. WHAT BEAUTY PRODUCT CAN YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT? I am not one to wear a great deal of make up. I only really apply make up when I am attending an event, or it if is needed for a casting or booking. However, the one item I absolutely cannot live without is mascara. I have naturally long eyelashes, but they are really light, so I have to apply mascara so my eyelids don’t look bald. WHAT IS THE LAST THING YOU DO BEFORE YOU GO TO SLEEP? Shower, say my Prayers and count my blessings WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT MANCHESTER FASHION WEEK? I'm really looking forward to opening the show! That's definitely going to be a highlight. I am relaunching my modelling career this year, so I am definitely looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. I am just super excited to be a part of it! DO YOU HAVE ANY BAD HABITS? I boredom snack...believe me I eat a lot! YOU RECENTLY BECAME A MUM, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM THAT? To not take advantage of the spare time I have. It isn’t much, but I have learned to become proactive and not waste a second. I have also learned that I am patient. WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP DID YOU REALISE HOW INSPIRATIONAL YOUR UNCLE LINFORD WAS? Growing up, I knew he was someone great,
though I didn’t realise how great. I was naturally inspired by him, and it was because of him that I started track and got into sports. Watching him made me want to become someone and make a difference. ARE YOU PLANNING A SUMMER HOLIDAY THIS YEAR? I am not one to plan, as I never know when I am going to be busy or be needed somewhere. With everything that’s going on at the moment, I want to ensure that I am accessible and can be available. WHAT IS YOUR VICE? Netflix. It’s becoming a real problem! Manchester Fashion Week takes place 26-28 May at The Place Apart Hotel, for details and tickets go to

doo-wop soul
The Overtones INTERVIEW BY JOY LEWIS
T
he Overtones are a five-piece vocal harmony group paying tribute to doo-wop soul. They were discovered by a Warner Brothers talent scout while working as decorators in a shop near Oxford Street, singing during their tea break. Their debut album Good Ol' Fashioned Love was released in 2010, and since then they have never looked back. Now, five years later the boys have released their 4th album, “Sweet Soul Music” paying tribute to soul pioneers such as The Drifters, Al Green, Marvin Gaye and The Temptations, which is supported by a new tour. Our Editor Joy Lewis chatted with Mike Crawshaw in between tour rehearsals Hi Mike, congratulations on the release of your 4th album Sweet Soul Music, it’s already doing well, has the band’s success sunk in yet? Hello and thank you. No, it hasn’t yet, not really. I feel so lucky and privileged to every day work at something I love, we all get on and work well together. What we have
20
achieved is an understated success, which means that I am able to walk down the street, lead a normal life, but still we manage to fill theatres where we are touring. So much so you’ve had to add more dates to the tour Yes – that was such a shock. We released the tour details and dates at the end of December. We hadn’t been seen in 10 months because we were working on our album, so we just thought we would release the dates and promote heavily in the New Year. Within days it was selling out, we couldn’t have been happier or more proud. Or surprised, so yes we had to add more dates, fantastic really. So what can we expect from your new album Sweet Soul Music. Well after 3 previous albums we have a standard to uphold and a solid fan base not to let down. Many bands go into the recording studio one at a time, and just sing or play their part and then it’s all put
Lifestyle together digitally at the end. We didn’t want to do that, the songs that we are singing needed more attention than that. So we all went into the studio together and sang the songs together over and over again till we got it right, which is the way they would have been originally recorded anyway. We’re all really pleased with the result, they’re all classic songs which ruled the airwaves it’s been a real pleasure to take on these big songs, we’ve stretched our voices – our vocal abilities, our harmonies, our whole approach and moved into a different gear. You are bringing your tour of the album to the Philharmonic Liverpool, you’ve played here before, are you looking forward to coming back? Oh yes we love playing in Liverpool, the What's On Ad_168x120.qxp_Layout 1 24/04/2015 16:15 Page 1 audience knows their music and they are
doo-wop soul
very protective of it. To be honest as soon as you start getting north of Birmingham you feel the change. All our fans love music but it’s the deep love of it that you feel as you go north, especially in Liverpool, which has such a musical history. If you get it right then then that can only be a good thing. The audience there also leaves you with no illusions, they will tell you if they enjoyed your show or not. I’m proud to say we always have a good reception and I can’t wait to perform there again. And to have a pint in the Philharmonic pub, what a place. After picking up some new musical skills, Martinez also offered his artistic opinion on a large scale piece of art work that the youngsters were working on which will form the new logo of Breathing Space. Martinez’s visit to the project launch featured in a new film highlighting the

Lifestyle charity work of BT Sport’s The Supporters Club and its partnership with Everton in the Community. The film premiered on BT Sport 1 on Saturday ahead of its live broadcast of the Toffees visit to the Liberty Stadium. Funded by BT Sport’s The Supporters Club and the Premier League, Breathing Space is delivered by the charity’s Youth Engagement team and is accessible for 14-19 year olds who are children either currently in care or at risk of entering the care system. Everton in the Community will be working with the young people to develop their skills and confidence, help them gain accredited qualifications and offer them vital volunteering opportunities as well as oneto-one mentoring. Martinez was led through the workshop by EITC peer mentor Nathan who introduced him to the group and told him a little bit about his own background and his own involvement with Everton in the Community. 19 year-old Nathan is one of the charity’s many success stories after turning his life around since coming through its Safe Hands programme. Launched in 2012, Safe Hands helps integrate young offenders back into society and build positive relationships with their local communities. Through the help of the charity and Safe Hands, Nathan has turned his life around and achieved an apprenticeship and is now employed by the charity helping young people who are experiencing difficult times. The impact of the charity’s Youth Engagement projects is regularly recognised on a national level with both the Lotteries Youth in Focus Annual Report and the Youth Justice Board putting its programmes forward as examples of effective and positive practise.

SPRING SKIN
We love
SPRING SKIN L.A. SKINCARE The LA skincare range is designed by salon owner Louise Ashforth who wanted a range of treatment to suit every skin type. There is a 6 step programme to the LA skincare regime, with exfoliation, deep cleanse and moisturise. The chocolate exfoliation smells good enough to eat and the moisturising oil smells divine, it’s affordable pampering that makes you feel wonderful and I recommend a weekly treatment with it. 4/5
DARPHIN’S SOLEIL PLAISIR ANTI-AGEING SUN CARE I am quite pale, and even though I love the sun, the sun does not love me back. Since my teens I have been putting sunfactor 50 upon my freckly face, not ideal because it is heavy and you can't really wear foundation on top. But this is different, not only does it smell amazing with its blend of nourishing oils and butters such as karanja, avocado and coconut, it has a non-greasy texture that leaves skin feeling lovely and silky. The big bonus with this sun cream is that it is so lightweight that you can wear it under your normal foundation. 4/5 30
RADICAL SKINCARE
The Radical Skincare range is stocked in Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar. I was treated to a full facial and was skeptical about its claims of reducing fine lines. However after 2 weeks of using the serum and moisturiser everyday I have seen a new found smoothness to my skin and yes, it seems to be working. Priced at the higher end to the market, this may not be for everyone but can you really put a price on beauty? I will definitely be restocking up on these. The face that it is almost odourless means you can use this in the morning before going out and it won’t interfere with your perfume. That’s a big plus. 4/5
BARE MINERALS COMPLEXION RESCUE TINTED HYDRATING GEL CREAM £26
Described as a skin-quenching formula that hydrates your skin when you’re wearing it—and even long after you’ve applied it. This multi-tasking genius delivers intense hydration and skinloving coverage in a purposefully crafted complexion formula. Having tried this I am a full convert, without a doubt this is the best foundation I have ever used. Not only does it not dry out, you can build it up for heavier coverage if needs be. And best of all, because it's so hydrating you can pop it into your handbag for a under-eye touch up after work. 4/5

RACHEL SPENCER
I
have often been asked how start in a singing career. Over the next three, monthly articles, I will hopefully provide an insight into singing as a career.
Many people grow up dreaming to become singers. Fewer adults actually pursue their dreams, even fewer actually succeed in a singing career. A career as a singer is a hard life that requires talent, dedication, and confidence. Singing careers are tough, but they can be accomplished. Preferably training for a singer usually involves vocal coaching at a young age, although it would be beneficial to start young, vocal coaching can benefit your chances of becoming a singer at any age. Singers are often categorised according to vocal range such as soprano, contralto, tenor, baritone or bass. If you are serious about becoming a singer, learn what range category your voice falls into. Though you can extend your voice range through extensive training, it is best to stick with songs that fit in your natural range; anybody interested in becoming singers can also attend college and get a music or theatre degree, either one will complement you career.
38
Talent is the most important qualification for becoming a singer. It does not matter whether this talent is natural or was acquired through training, either way; the talent has to be there. The second most important qualification for becoming a singer is experience and since the world of singing is a competitive one, as much experience and training you can acquire can only be of help. If you are serious about becoming a singer, consider starting
Lifestyle music performing on a volunteer basis at venues such as churches, school recitals, community theatres and parties; this will provide valuable experience, in a relatively stress free environment. After you obtainexperience in performing live, to an audience; you will be more confident in taking onsinging engagements. A formal college or university degree is not required, but it would be beneficial to you. Singers perform in various types of jobs and venues. Stage singers will usually perform for theatrical performances such as musicals or operas onstage or possibly television and films. Popular singers will usually be a part of a band or will be able to play an instrument accompanying their voice. Popular singers will perform concerts on tour; perform at nightclubs, bars, coffee shops and parties or special events. Singers can perform in front of a live audience or in a recording studio. Professional singers undertake long working hours that mainly include holidays, weekends and late nights; remember, it is not a nine to five job! You will often be unemployed between engagements, and may need to support yourself with asecond income. Singers often stick to one genre such as rock, pop, country, folk, musicals, opera, blues, jazz or rap, so consider what fits your voice and decide what you want to be. The financial reward for singing is individual and subject to the areas worked, type of venue and whether you use an agent or not. In my next article I will explore further the way forward to a singing career. You can read more about Rachel and where she is performing by visiting her at

What comes first for you dancing or singing?
EGO Interview by Joy Lewis
E
GO is a fierce, five-piece girl band from Liverpool, created by manager Miguel Doforo, creative director of MD Productions. Born out of the success of the three times semi-finalist on Britain's Got Talent, Reme, Chelsea, Megan, Summer and Jess are strong and sassy dancers who create a fusion of pop-rock and an RnB sound. The vocals alongside the high-energy routines and rock, urban-edge bring a powerful performance to the stage, always leaving the crowd captivated and wanting more. Ego has been working in the studio with songwriter Chelcee Grimes who has recently written tracks for Kylie and The Saturday's.
I love the name EGO, where did you get it from and why?
Miguel had played around with a few names and this one suited most with the ideas and vision for the band.
Can you describe your music?
Pop, RnB. We always need a good beat to dance to. 40
We have all been dancers at MD Productions first, so its dance that brought us together but it’s great we can now add vocals to our performance.
You all look fantastic and bang on very edgy trend - do you have any fashion influences?
We looked at what was current then added our own spin to it, making our outfits individual to each of us, for our own personalities.
How did you get together?
Miguel Doforo, our manager from MD Productions, put us together. He had a vision of a girl group and wanted it to come entirely from MD Productions and we made the short list from his auditions.
Who are your musical influences?
Beyonce, Pussycat Dolls, Rihanna, Jessie J.
What has 2015 got in store for you?
Lots of shows, schools tours and recording the rest of our album. It’s busy and exciting times ahead.

Lifestyle BAROQUE ROCK
Interview with the
Mono LPs THE MONO LPS – COOL IS JUST TOO AN INSIPID A WORD TO DESCRIBE THIS BAND. THEY GO THEIR OWN WAY – THEY HAVE THEIR OWN SOUND, IT’S UNIQUE WITHOUT BEING WEIRD. BOLD WITHOUT HAVING TO SHOUT. IF YOU’VE NOT HEARD THEM YET I URGE YOU TO DO SO, BECAUSE YOU ARE MISSING OUT. NAME FIRST?
Well, I (Ste) was in Vicky's house trying to think of a name for the band that would give our music a bit of identity. I started to inspiration. On most of the older ones it would say at the top 'a stereophonic recording' or 'recording in Mono' and it just clicked. The Mono LPs seemed like a cool name and it just came across. CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC
One journalist described us as 'baroque rock'! I think that's perfect! YOUR MUSIC IS REALLY FRESH, ARE YOU INFLUENCED BY ANYONE IN PARTICULAR?
hip hop - Red Hot Chili Peppers; Ste loves '60s music like The Beatles, The Kinks and to blend together when we make music together. YOUR SECOND SINGLE IS BEING RELEASED IN SUPER COOL FASHION - A MASQUERADE BALL - WHICH SOUNDS AMAZING, WHAT GAVE YOU THIS IDEA AND WHY?
'Emilia' is our new single. It's a double A-side with 'Giving It Up'. We've noticed a circus/cabaret scene going on in Liverpool and we thought it'd be interesting to tap into it. We've got some great support acts on the night. Musically, we've got Chanel Samson from LA and our good friend Paul Straws whose album Vicky has played cello on. The magician Jack Flash and burlesque performers Mary-Jane Black and Dorothy Krueger will be entertaining the audience. Dorothy has appeared in our soon-to-bereleased music video for 'Giving It Up'. W AS A BAND?
playing them. Vicky is a lover of classical and soul music - she loves Stevie Wonder; Dan is in to rock and metal - he likes Foo Fighters and Led Zeppelin; Chris is a fan of funk and 42
We will be going down to London soon for a showcase gig, playing festivals across the UK and Fosnavag Rock Festival in Norway! Then we will be returning to the studio to record more material for our upcoming album.

Lifestyle man versus food adam rICHman
THE FOOD FINDER
Adam Richman built his reputation as the human hoover behind the addictive series, Man Versus Food, where his call of duty was to consume large qualities of American cuisine in family-run joints under strict time limits. Crowds are drawn to his mass eating efforts, and his photo is tacked to the 'winners' wall in restaurants up and down the United States of America. Adam has won himself a cult audience here in the UK too, and since ending his competitive eating era some six years ago, he's back with two new shows, Food Fighters and Man Finds Food. Adam reveals that Food Fighters is a celebration of home cooking. "We have home cooks from all walks of life; Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, stay at home mums, grandfathers, newlyweds, and they all provide their best family recipes and go up against five professional chefs. The chefs don't know what dish they're about to make, and the home cooks don't know which chef they're about to compete against or where their 44
expertise lies. There's an element of strategy involved." Once again, Adam appeals to the foodie public - though his enthusiasm and charisma as a presenter is enough to draw viewers in. After studying Drama at Yale, and journaling his every restaurant experience since his college years, it seems the man was made for the food entertainment industry. But just why are food-based shows so enduringly popular? "Take a show about football or rugby," Adam explains. "If you don't like football or rugby you won't watch it, or if it's a show about politics and you're dissatisfied with the current political climate you won't watch it, but if you want to sustain life alone you must eat. So there is a universality and a universal appeal to food and to culture." What's more, our approach to food is becoming more refined. "You're dealing with a day and age where people are more informed eaters, grocery stores are carrying more variety, we have a better understanding of organic and free range
45
Lifestyle man versus food
produce, and I just think people want to know more about food. We don't all care about who plays in the Premier League but many of us do like to eat." It bottles down to a sense of inclusiveness. "I can watch somebody sky diving and find that fascinating but I can't just go and do a sky dive - but I can watch someone make a really terrific pasta dish and then I can go and get the ingredients and try it myself that evening," he explains. In fact, Adam's passion for good grub has taken him on a journey across America in his latest programme too. "Man Finds Food is essentially an exploration of delicious and off the beaten path hidden restaurants. We're about finding places that are local legends, iconic places that had been loved for generations, and places that even the locals don't know about," he says. But just how does he source restaurants for the show if by definition they're hidden away? "Some are word of mouth, some are ones I myself have been to and I have a lot of other friends in the restaurant business around the United States so sometimes they'll tell me about a place. The production team is awesome and sometimes the research comes through their friends too, they'll find certain places. Some come naturally. For example in Hawaii 46
there's a bowling alley that serves amazing food; we had gone to profile one foodstuff, only to find they actually had a five course gourmet meal on certain Tuesdays and that wasn't even initially what we had come to cover. So we had these secrets being revealed on camera." Adam encourages Brits to try the plates the States have to offer, though he's aware that tastes can be subjective. "Cities that I've found to have great variety and great food - of course I'm from New York and I'm extremely partial to my home town of New York City - New Orleans has amazing food, then Chicago, Austin and San Francisco are probably my favourite eating cities or at least some of them." And Adam's made time in his UK trip to taste what we have to offer. "I've been to some really wonderful restaurants and I had the chance to go to M.Manze in London for pie mash and liquor which was wonderful. I tried terrific stuff in Borough Market - salt beef, fish and chips, and I've been to some wonderful establishments in China Town. I haven't been to greasy spoons but I think the grease is in the eye of the beholder."

Lifestyle van morrison duets
n o s i r r o M Van
48
Van Morrison is considered one of the most prolific recording artists and extraordinary live performers of our time. He has received a multitude of awards and accolades including 6 Grammy Awards, a Brit Award, an OBE, an Ivor Novello, has been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His latest album – Duets, released last month is a re-working of his back catalogue, Van Morrison and the guests selected and recorded some of his songs from the catalogue of 360 songs across his career. Deliberately steering away from his more well-known classics, Van enlisted
some of the artists he most respects to perform these songs with him to re-craft and re-imagine them. The album was recorded in his home town of Belfast and London in the United Kingdom over the last year, using a variety of musicians and fresh arrangements. The album features duet performances with Bobby Womack, Steve Winwood, Mark Knopfler, Taj Mahal, Mavis Staples, Michael Bublé, Natalie Cole, George Benson, Gregory Porter, Clare Teal, P.J. Proby, Joss Stone, Georgie Fame, Mick Hucknall, Chris Farlowe, and Van’s daughter Shana Morrison.
Interview by Joy Lewis
Lifestyle van morrison duets
Where did you get the idea from for this whole project? The ideas have been around for years really, it’s what you call a side project. I’ve done duets before.
How did you choose the guests? With great difficultly. I had to leave a lot of people out because of the time factor and it was going to run into a double or triple album. I just had to get people who were available. It started back in October 2013. I wanted Bobby Womack, he had been one of the first people on my list for many years. So Bobby Womack, Mavis Staples and Natalie Cole were playing the Blues Festival in London and so was I. That made sense to get them during that. Those three kind of kicked it off for me. Then it was much harder to get the rest of it because of calendars.
Was it important to have people face to face with you in the studio? Because it is the practice now for people to phone stuff in. Absolutely, yes, yes. You want to get that whenever possible, it is not always possible because of calendars as people are all over the place and very busy. Whenever possible you want to get that. The George Benson track I did live with his band in the studio, because I wanted to do something with his
band rather than mine for a change. You just have to work with what’s available at the time. Luckily he was in London at the time, his band was there, so it worked out.
What was it like making a short list of your songs, it must have been incredibly difficult? Yeah, it was very difficult. Some of them picked their own songs or I made suggestions and they said that was fine. Like Bobby Womack I sent him that track, he said yeah I like the song I can do that. Other ones had songs in mind like Mick Hucknall, wanted to do Streets of Arklow, he specifically picked that song. Mark Knopfler picked his song. Of course the PJ Proby one is pretty obvious. I had recorded that song at some time in the early 2000’s so that was an easy one.
I guess some people would have expected to hear the greatest hits, like Moondance on the album. It ended up being called ‘Reworking the catalogue’. The idea was that as no one else is working the catalogue. You have publishers but it is lip service really, it is not like the old days where you had a publisher that was going to work your songs. So that was the other strand of it. It was two parts to it, one was the fun of doing duets the other was re-working the songs as no one else is working them. So I have to work them. It’s like working the catalogue.
Duets is available now on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify

QUIRK LOVE REVOLUTION
I
n general election month, after weeks of lies and electioneering, who could blame me for devoting May’s column to a Revolution? Not the kind longed for by Russell Brand, you understand, the kind which will not be televised or, these days, probably even streamed live on YouTube, but the one on Temple Court in the Cavern Quarter. This branch of the famous chain has been packing them in every Friday and Saturday night lately and smashing their many would-be competitors in the Mathew Street and Victoria Street area. Manager, Katy Larson, 26, came to study in Liverpool from her native Leicester and liked us so much that she stayed. Taking over in February after steering the company’s flagship venue in Albert Dock, what Katy did next was set about getting things ship-shape in Temple Court. Weekend customers are now advised to bring along two booties with them, because one booty simply isn’t going to be enough to cope with the roster of top DJs serving up a heady cocktail of classic funk, soul
52
and disco gems from the 70s, 80s, 90s and noughties, mixed together brilliantly with the best of today’s hot and sexy deep house and R&B, plus tons of unique and amazing mash ups that you won’t hear anywhere else. The security team is excellent too; friendly, experienced and super-professional, which makes all the difference in an area populated with so many bars and visited by such a wide variety of people. Best of all though are the staff and management team who quite clearly enjoy their jobs, which always makes for an even better atmosphere. If this wasn’t bad enough news for the competition then the bar is about to be raised even further with the re-launch of a beautifully refurbished clubroom on the first floor on Saturday 2nd May. Booths in the clubroom can be prebooked on 0151 236 0905 but demand is understandably expected to be very high, especially with it being a Bank Holiday. We know you want a Revolution but instead of trying to change the world, just book early instead.

Golding Estates take Silver
Belvoir Lettings Liverpool & West Derby were awarded a Gold Award for Customer Service at the annual Belvoir National Awards in Nottingham recently. Paul Rice and Adam Rastall pictured here with TV presenter Dominic Littlewood have just followed this up with an ESTAS (the property Oscars) Bronze Award for Best Agent in the North West voted for by landlords. “It’s always great to win awards but especially satisfying when it’s for areas such as customer services. Director Paul Rice commented “We are delighted as a team across our two offices to collect this award. Belvoir have some fantastic offices across the UK and for our Liverpool offices to be picked out for our customer service, which we pride ourselves on, is testament to our close knit teams efforts.”
Brian
Golding from Golding Estates, who formed the company back in 2005 with branches in Prescot Road and Knotty Ash before then opening a third site in Liverpool city centre, on Exchange St East, in 2012 said “We are absolutely thrilled to be recognised at this year’s ESTAS. It means so much to us as we know it’s our customers who have judged our performance. We take our levels of customer service very seriously because we know clients have a choice. We have always been very proud of the personal service and this proves we are delivering what we promise.” Sarah Golding (pictured) added “Picking up Silver in the Best Lettings Agents in the North West voted for by tenants is testament to our great team.”

business performance
Confidence HERE DOES IT COME FROM AND HOW CAN I GET MORE OF IT? In my work with executives, business managers, business owners through to young adults and teenagers, I am often asked “how” to improve confidence and where does confidence come from. Whether it’s a business presentation, a new job, a job interview or asking someone out on a date, these are all areas that we can feel under confident in. We can feel anxious, nervous and fearful. We know this because we have all been there at some time. The great news is you’re not on your own. When I ask a room full of people to raise their hands if they would like to improve some aspect of their confidence”? I guarantee 100% of the time all hands in the room are raised. So the first thing is be reassured it’s perfectly normal and natural to have feelings of under confidence. We know that confidence comes from within ourselves and that we are products of our environment. We believe that our friends, family, experiences are what shape our confidence and to some ends these statements are true. We will feel more confident in certain environments and with certain people than others, and if we are not careful we can stay within those environments as that’s where we feel comfortable and reassured.
W
To gain confidence everybody needs to push themselves beyond their individual comfort zone. But what is a comfort zone? Everybody’s comfort zone is different as it is created by ourselves. Imagine something that you do everyday, a habit or an activity that doesn’t make you feel awkward or raise your stress levels – this is your individual comfort zone.
But good news is that by trusting ourselves and pushing beyond these self imposed boundaries, and by managing our anxiety we can gain confidence. Stretching beyond your own boundaries may feel uncomfortable at first, but stick with it, and don’t stop pushing yourself. No it’s not always going to be easy, but it is well worth the effort. By sticking with it you will become more, but by giving up at the first hurdle it will become harder to stretch the boundaries and may result in under confidence. It’s somewhat of an irony that we want to feel confident to attempt new things when in turn by doing these things we actually become more confident. Try it! So the very next time you are challenged to step outside your comfort zone embrace the opportunity because this is exactly where your confidence comes from. There is no failure only NOT TRYING. Try something each day that challenges your comfort zone and watch as your confidence grows. It’s not an overnight job, it’s an inside job. NEW RANGE ROVER
EVOQUE CONVERTIBLE
L
and Rover has officially announced plans to offer a Range Rover Evoque Convertible. Previewed by the Evoque Cabrio concept, the production model will become the world’s first premium compact SUV convertible when it goes on sale in 2016. You don’t have to get it in camouflage of course, but if you do, not a single head wouldn’t turn.
convertible being lowered into the tunnel network by crane, before negotiating a range of obstacles through the 6.2 metre diameter tunnel.
Land Rover announced the new addition to the fleet by showing the new Evoque Convertible being tested forty metres below the streets of London. Where the new Evoque Convertible was granted exclusive access to the 26-mile (42km) network of Crossrail tunnels for a development test with a difference. Engineers were allowed the opportunity to drive the disguised Evoque Convertible with its roof lowered in complete privacy.
The Range Rover Evoque is no stranger to subterranean adventure. At its launch in 2011 the five-door variant was driven through Edge Hill Tunnel in Liverpool, the first tunnel in the world to be bored beneath a major city.
The short film began with the highly-capable
Murray Dietsch, Director of Land Rover Programmes said: “The tunnels are still under construction, so we had a unique opportunity to explore the vehicle’s all-terrain ability in unchartered territory.”
Land Rover will announce further details about its exclusive new premium compact SUV Convertible later this year. It will be built alongside the five door and coupe Evoque at Land Rover’s Halewood plant in the UK and will be on sale in 2016.

DIY...
Hello Lifestyle Readers! Spring has finally sprung and we all have some warmer weather to look forward to. It’s been a busy month for me with plenty of exciting news to report. I talked to a host of broadcast media outlets following the announcement by Kingfisher, owner of the B&Q and Screwfix brands that it plans to shut 60 UK and Irish B&Q stores in the next two years. I appeared on both Channel 4 News and Sky News to share my views, having already spoken on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Afternoon Edition show, hosted by Dan Walker and Sarah Brett. It’s my view that young people in particular aren’t picking up key DIY skills from their parents, which is why we have seen this decline. I am always keen to try to teach the basics of DIY, and strongly believe everyone is able to learn key skills that make such a difference around the home. I was delighted to feature on This Morning to demonstrate a number of simple DIY tasks that can be easily undertaken. My ‘Easter DIY’ clinic showed audiences how to tackle some common DIY tasks, no matter how unexperienced they may be! I’m also pleased to announce that the first of the videos I filmed for Silverline Tools has now been released. In this edition, I teach people how to clean a patio with a pressure washer, which is an especially useful skill as you begin to venture outside into your gardens! Visit the Silverline Tools channel on YouTube to find the latest video, as well as all my previous ones. That’s about it from me this month – I’ve also chosen an outdoor DIY tip for you lucky people! Until next time… All the best,

74 = BUILD AND HANG A GARDEN GATE MATERIALS/TOOLS
Chop saw • drill/driver • countersink drill bit 3mm • tape measure • setsquare • 4”x1” timber • screws • hinges and latch The benefit of constructing your own garden gate is that you can really be creative with its size and design. I chose to build a gate to match my garden fencing and created a point at the top of the gate to make it harder for intruders to climb over the top! Start by cutting the 4”x1” timber fence panels to length, creating a point for the top of the gate if you wish. Now lay the fence panels on the floor or a work bench, leaving a space between each panel. Using a chop saw cut a cross section piece of 4”x1” and screw it firmly across the width of the fence panels using a drill/driver and 40mm screws. To add to the appearance of your gate and to provide extra support you can cut and fit another cross section on a diagonal spanning across the upright panels and just touching the bottom of the cross members. Next, position both hinges where they will be fixed to the gate and drill pilot holes where the screws will be. Then, swap the drill bit to a screw driver piece and firmly drive the screws into the timber of the gate to secure the hinges. You are now ready to hang your gate and should repeat the above process to secure the free edge of the hinges to the gate post. Latch fittings and locks can be attached in the same way as your hinges.

I
t’s a beautiful time of the year, the days are longer, the air feels fresher and sky is looking blue. I have more than a spring in my step and I hope you do too.
I have been asked to write a book. Because I don’t have enough going on in my life, I suppose. Why not, I think. It won’t be the first book I have written, when I was 21 I wrote Sweet Revenge, a 1000 page block buster and had a really high profile literary agent in London who told me I was going to be the next Barbara Taylor Bradford. Amazing to think that someone had such faith in me, it was a shame I doubted that faith, and after 3 rewrites under her guidance I foolishly gave up. The unpublished manuscript remains under my bed, I hope one day it will be rediscovered and published all around the world. To date it has been one of my personal
failures and always in the back of my mind, but as with all lessons in life I have learnt that failure is not the opposite of success, it is the path to success, for without it lessons can’t be made. This time my book is going to be non fiction. I won’t give too much away but I don’t plan on giving up this time. Failure is a lesson, it teaches us how to behave differently and find an alternative way to go around a problem. To turn down the opportunity of writing a book would be another failure and I am not planning on missing this opportunity. I have set my sights a little lower than global publishing and book signings around the world, but the dream is still there. I’m going for it. Stay stylish,
Amanda Moss
