EMILIA CLARKE i t’s one thing to be offered a emilia Clarke’s journey from a call-centre to contesting the throne in the mythical land of Westeros has made her one of the most recognisable females in the TV industry. As Game of Thrones’ seventh season aims to shatter even more records, will the determined figure of daenerys rise above the men and claim the kingdom for herself? 10
part in a major HBO series straight out of drama school – and another thing entirely to land one of the leading roles in the biggest television experience ever known. Yet this is exactly what happened to emilia Clarke when, in 2011, she was cast as daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, despite having very little on-screen experience.
Since that point, Clarke has become synonymous with the recordbreaking show as the ivory-haired ‘mother of dragons’, even managing to pick up three Emmy nominations of her own – not bad for someone who, pre-thrones, was working a menial job at a “terrible” call-centre. “Sometimes it's difficult to for me to believe how lucky I've been,” explains the 30-year-old, “this series has given me the kind of role that every actress dreams of getting. I never imagined that I would get a part on game of thrones much less get to play a major character. Even when I was told that I was going to play daenerys, I had no idea it would turn out to be so important. I was just happy to be able to earn a living doing what I love.” nowadays, it’s increasingly difficult to remember a time before game of thrones had conquered the television industry. Since its inception, the show has swept aside all competition in a tsunami of insurmountable ratings, intrigue, shocking violence, and of course the oft-overused nudity that turned Clarke into an international sex symbol.
as the only female character with a solid claim to the Iron throne of westeros, Clarke’s daenerys must mix it with the very worst of the show’s macho machiavellians. In turn, viewers have seen her character blossom over the course of seven breath-taking seasons into a determined role model for a generation of female thrones fans. “It's been a revelation for me to be able to grow with her and watch her transform from a girl into a woman,” says Clarke, “She has great natural strength and selfassurance and I try to draw as much inspiration as I can from her will-power and determination in the face of great challenges.” now that thrones’ penultimate season is set to hit screens any time soon, however, it’s time for Clarke to focus on where her career might take her when the battle for the Iron throne is finally concluded. “I want to continue working in theatre because that helps me improve and I love performing in front of an audience,” she reveals. “I would also like to do a musical at some point because I enjoy singing. I'm probably going to make my fair share of good and bad choices but fate and luck are all part of the game. I'm going to simply trust my instincts and see where that takes me.” But first there’s the small matter of the biggest season of telly that the world has ever seen. "Last season's battle was ridiculous," Clarke says. "But this season is off the shizzy! there's another battle, but they’ve topped it again."

celebrated fashion photographer and contemporary artist will be making an appearance at Liverpool’s newest art gallery next month to unveil his latest collection. Raphael mazzucco will be flying over from the united States to visit the new Castle fine art gallery on Church alley on friday 21st July between 6pm and 8pm. alongside the exhibition of his Exposure collection, guests will be treated to live dancers and a bespoke cocktail designed exclusively for the event by arcane. the body of work will then be on display until Sunday 30th July. It marks the first event at the chic new gallery, which is Castle fine art’s first venture in the city and is just a stone’s throw away from Liverpool Central train station and Liverpool onE. many months in the making, Exposure is a series of printed paintings capturing the female form. It saw mazzucco collaborate with Canadian artist, oly Bernardi, to adopt an entirely new technique, transforming 12
a container into a dark room to process each image. mazzucco is one of the world’s most influential and talented fashion photographers. after years spent honing his craft in Italy, france and amsterdam, his arrival in new york City garnered attention from some of fashion’s elite and saw him work on photographic campaigns for the likes of victoria’s Secret, guess Jeans, L’oreal and Ralph Lauren. his work has appeared in L’official, french & Italian vogue, L’uomo vogue, marie Claire, Playboy and vanity fair, featuring not only his editorial fashion photography but celebrity portraiture of notable actors including Benicio del toro, matt damon, Susan Sarandon and Elizabeth Banks. deciding to swap the camera for canvas over seven years ago, mazzucco’s arrival onto the art scene has been met with widespread critical acclaim, with damien hirst purchasing one of the artist’s collections for over $750,000. Speaking of his new collection,
Raphael mazzucco said: “I was inspired to start work on Exposure when I saw a boat loaded with shipping crates and had a vision to acquire one with old-style photography in mind. “I bought a 2000 square foot container and transformed it into a dark room for a process called ‘monoprints’ - the most painterly method among the printmaking techniques. Seeing the print slowly emerge was incredibly nostalgic and rewarding.” Prices start at £695.00 for limited edition prints and £6,950.00 for original artworks. visitors wishing to attend the event and meet the artist should contact the gallery team to be added to the guest list:

Join in the conversation online #JCLive17 tickets are onsale now and available via www.thejockeyclublive.co.uk You are celebrating your 50th anniversary as a group and your popularity never seems to wane and your fanbase continues to attract new, younger generations, why do you think that is? yes we will be celebrating our anniversary as a group. I think the music we recorded in the late sixties, early seventies was designed for a certain demography (kids from 10 to 14) that no other group was targeting. we were young kids and the music was family oriented, feel good music that happened to be appeal to all ages. What can people expect from The Jacksons in concert? we’ve always strived to give 200%, give our fans our best. an energetic show, with as many of our hits as we can fit within a 90 min show. With so many worldwide smash hits, does your setlist write itself? no because you have to make them all work within your line up. Placement is the key. What is the song from your catalogue that you all would agree is the best to perform live? from each brother you may get a different answer, but for me Shake your Body (down to the 16
ground). It is a song that gets the crowd going and takes them to another level of excitement. Being in a group with your family can be a help or hindrance depending on the siblings, how have you found it after all this time? from working together as kids we know no other way. of course we have our differences, but we have learned to agree to disagree. How did the dynamics change in the group after Michaels departure in the 80’s and how has his legacy influenced The Jacksons in this day and age? michael never left the group. he did a solo project that was some of the best music ever and one of the biggest selling LP’s of all time. this was not a hinderance to the group because he is our sibling and the name Jackson was still being branded. its fair to say you were part of the golden era of Motown, how was it being part of that recording family when everything that was released turned to gold? yes one could say that motown had great writers and producers. It was a hit factory. There seems to be a long history between your family and the uK, have you a soft
spot for our green and pleasant land? the uK has always been great to us, we always look forward to coming and performing there. the fans are great and they know their music. We’re guessing you might never have been Haydock park (near liverpool and Manchester) and newmarket Racecourse (near Cambridge), but have you ever visited those towns near them over the years or seen much of the uK outside of london? not really, so it is great to get out some time when we can, we never had the chance to get out in some of the rural areas. Whats next after the 50th celebrations? Chill out after 50 years and spend more time with family and venture into some other things. Like, for example, getting my 'Study Peace' hat and clothing line up and going. Can you feel it? yes I can feel it. Can you?
THE BIG INTERVIEW
ANTHEA TURNER anthea turner opens up about life after divorce to Lifestyle magazine and encourages people to work through marriage problems rather than walking out. Interview with amanda moss

as her self help book how to Survive divorce flies off the shelves in shops and is currently being reprinted due to demand, anthea spoke frankly about how she coped with the end of her 15 year marriage to grant Bovey and fear stopped her from leaving when she should have. “fear stops you doing a lot of things, it’s the fear of the unknown but choosing to get a divorce is not a cut and dry option. I would always encourage people to make it work. Every marriage is different. Everyone deserves a second chance but not necessarily a third chance. Every marriage is fraught with difficulties and you have to think about saving it before you decide to end it.” She absolutely encourages people to try and sort out their differences though. She added, “Statistically there are more divorced people who wish they had worked harder to make it work and I would say don’t give up so easily. that’s not necessarily giving your partner a hall pass to do whatever they want but think about it as the other side is a lot harder. think about can you save it? you try not to live with regret, you don’t want to live with regret.” “It’s a lot easier for people to walk out a marriage now, in previous decades there was a lot of stigma and women
stayed with abusive men and it was terrible for them. Some stayed in bad marriages because they were tied to a mortgage or because of other financial grounds, or children, or social stigma, but that’s not there any more. But that’s not a reason to stay. “ anthea encourages people to seek mediation and she thanks donna Robinson for working with her through her divorce. anthea said, “Professional advice is always best, it’s important to speak to therapists and people who aren’t emotionally involved. friends are necessarily objective, you need to be able to speak to someone impartial who can tell you if you overreacted to something or if you need to do something. there’s no point talking to a solicitor either because they are a business and as soon as you all into their office they start the clock. your solicitor isn’t interested in whether your husband went shopping with your daughter and bought the wrong school shoes, ultimately the money coming out of the pot for this is your and his.the right mediation can save you a lot of money in the longterm. men are wired differently as well, they don’t like to talk about things and you have to accept who you are dealing with. whatever it takes to get them to the table try to do it because ultimately the pot is his and yours. “ She recommends a group called amicable where people can get an amicable divorce and share the same solicitor. It is important not to debate money because it can be awful. But having survived divorces she is positive for the future. “ I am in a good place, “ the ex Blue Peter and gmtv presenter said. “I am stronger now. I was very frightened as to what would I be like and what would I find on the other side of divorce and it wasn’t good to think about it. But I am standing stronger in my own shows and I am
we set up the interview anthea gave me her number and we missed each other’s calls a few times. when we did speak she was full of genuine warmth and it was like charing to a friend. She really wanted to help and I strongly recommend reading her book if it is relevant to you. anthea is 57 but looks years younger and we chatted about her beauty routine. She said, “I think it’s 75% genetic and 25% work. I am not into jumping about the place for exercise so I prefer pilates and yoga to work out. of course there is more effort required as you get older but we all know what we need to do, don’t we. Reaching for a banana rather than a mars bar, everything in moderation and keeping yourself hydrated. and I

feeling more powerful and starting to move on. of course there have been duvet days and the drawing of sorrows in a glass of wine. that’s ok in moderation but I am fit and healthy, I needed to keep my mind alert to deal with the situation.” “women become co dependent in a marriage and that isn’t a terrible thing because that is what marriage is all about, but when it falls apart I had to make myself better than better. I had to disassemble and then reassemble and come out stronger. People don’t like to use words for strong and powerful women but that is what it was about." anthea is still very much in demand in her successful career, filming for Channel 5 and doing some pieces for antiques Roadshow. when

ust a two and a half hour flight away and you can be basking in the mediterranean Spanish sunshine which is present for 315 days of the year. my flight was at 7am and by lunchtime I was kayacking in the beautiful bay. the sea was at a perfect 22 degrees and the water was clear so I could see the fish skimming my feet as I enjoyed a gastronomic delight of fresh salad, olive oil and seafood overlooking the calm beach where families relaxed. Cartagena was my first port of call. this naval station is home to one of the biggest and most impressive roman ruin sites I have ever seen, notably the 2000 year old Roman theatre museum which seated 6000 people and was discovered under a series of buildings and lovingly restored. the original columns of the theatre are still standing and you can walk right into the theatre. a short walk away is the district of the Roman forum molinete. It is one of the largest urban archeological remains in Spain and is made up of an entire roman village discovered under the street. here you can find original rooms including spa, a town square,
24
banqueting hall and the original sewage and thermal heating system. It is a fascinating insight into how the Romans lived and well worth exploring. Just take comfortable shoes as there are a lot of steps and uneven pathways as you would expect. Cartagena is a naval city and the navy hold a ceremony, a bit like changing of the guard, every morning in the port. It’s a great tourist attraction and the venue is a favourite stop of for cruise ships. Elsewhere in the city is a large square filled with cafes to cool down with a drink and a sprinkling of just enough shops to pass away a leisurely afternoon. Everywhere is accessible by foot which makes it a perfect day trip if you are staying in a busier resort on the Costas and want to escape. I definitely recommend it. half an hour’s drive away is the clear water sea of mazarron and the resting place of many shipwrecks. this was where I experienced my first scuba dive. whilst I consider myself to be a good swimmer I was still terrified of diving to shallow depths of just 8 metres. But the experienced (and rather good looking) instructor
held my hand all the way to the ocean floor and I my eyes were opened to a whole new world. It was incredible, one of the best experiences ever and while our group dived there was also time to swim from the boat to the little shore and enjoy some sunbathing in a secluded alcove.the waters here boasts some of the clearest and most significant dives in the whole of Europe. It’s worth a weekend getaway to come just for this, and scuba diving lessons are available for anyone aged 12 years upwards. my next visit was along the coast to the sleepy town of aguilas on the Costa Calida with some of the best beaches on this side of Spain. there’s a small harbour which houses the daily fish market and the town is also the proud home of the annual Carnival de aguilas which even has its own statue to commemorate it. this area has its own microclimate with warm breezes all year round which makes it a comfortable environment all year round to carry out all the activities on offer. one of the highlights of this trip was a visit to Casa de Lorca which is one of the most important monuments in the region of murcia. this fortress housed an entire village including a 15th century Jewish quarter and one of
the oldest synagogues in Spain that was not converted into a Christian temple. there is a boutique hotel attached to the castle which is 600 feet above sea level and has some breathtaking views across the valley. my final stop off was at Caravaca de la Cruz. this beautiful little town is dominated by the medieval Castle of Santa Cruz and is the fifth holy city of Catholic Christianity, having been granted the privilege to celebrate the jubilee of perpetuity in 1998 and then every 7 years. whilst we were visiting we were overrun by a coach load of pilgrims anxious to get inside and feel the energy within this imposing, elegant structure. It’s a very rustic town with lots of pretty little walkways and was definitely a highlight of my trip as I saw a side of Spain I had never experienced before. murcia is a vibrant cosmopolitan city separated by a river. there are endless shops, restaurants and cafes but it is the rich history of the region and this city that is its selling point. there is a great deal of moorish influence in the city, not least of all the impressive city walls. after the reconquest, the 20 mosques in the city were turned into churches. the Cathedral is the most highly prized building in the city. the first foundation stone was laid in 1388 by Bishop Pedrosa. It took four centuries to complete. there are so many different styles and cultures within, including 23 different chapels. In short murcia region is a rich source of culture and traditions that makes this year so very special. Spain has always been a popular destination because of its close proximity to the uK and the wonderful warm climate. It’s close enough to alicante and La manga and the densely popular coastal resorts in between that are frequented by us Brits. Part of me does not want to recommend a visit to this beautiful unspoilt region for fear of it becoming overrun with beer guzzling loud tourists, yet at the same time I can’t stress enough how wonderful this place is to visit and see a slice of Spainish culture and history.

RADIO & TV PRESENTER, SINGLE MUM & SOCIALITE CLAIRE SIMMO i cannot believe another month
has flown by and the time has come to write my next article for Lifetsyle magazine! I was actually quite proud and pleased to pick up my first copy last month, with my first ever column, and excitedly showed my 11 year old melodie, thinking that my children would eventually take me seriously, only to find her sniggering at the description of me being a Radio & tv Presenter, Socialite & SIngLE mum … "Look" she cried as she laughed uncontrollably "Even Lifestyle point out you haven't got a boyfriend!" It’s a good job I don't take myself seriously isn't it? well, its been a strange old month, with the snap election can I ask what happened to the days of no one discussing who they vote for, and it being your own private affair, I'm all for freedom of speech, but felt rather bombarded with others views and how you should vote on social media. It was rather ironic I had to cover the breakfast show Solo on Radio City 2 on the morning after the 28
election - given that I know the least about politics than anyone else in the tower! the tragic events in manchester which of course shocked us all - too close for comfort, we all know we have been to gigs with our children there, and quite easily know it could have been any one of us. I can honestly say - after almost 20 years in radio, I have never done a show that felt like I was in a daze - both Rossie and myself sat in silence whilst the songs played in a state of shock - the usual frivolity and mickey taking, just didn’t seem appropriate. Every time I thought of every child, parent, brother, sister at that ariana grande gig - tears rolled down my cheeks, and wow how that young girl has conducted herself since that dreadful night we could all learn a lesson from her. I'm a great believer in focusing in the positive things in life and she certainly did that and showed how the world can be a better place and there are still good people left in it. most people I knew were a little wary of public events in the days following the manchester bombing but typical Simmo style had a weekend diary packed full of work which I had already committed too. thursday evening was Sound City where myself and my friend Patrick mcBride (you may know him as the new milk tray man) were reviewing the human League. there was a minutes silence before they took to the stage - and on that warm night in Clarence dock - you could have
heard a pin drop. then I felt like I'd been transported back to the 80's as they belted out hits like "don't you want me" "fascination" and "together in Electric dreams". friday evening was the rescheduled gig for take that at the Echo arena which had been postponed on the tuesday as a mark of respect for the families. I was hosting the box for Radio City and once again gary Barlow delivered a heartfelt speech about how we must unite together and not be afraid. I was the perfect host until the boys arrived on stage and then was back into my "Ever forget" and "Pray" dance routines and became oblivious to everyone else around me! the weekend finished with hosting the Rock n Roll marathon - which is the fourth year I've hosted this and its an incredible event, so much fun and so many inspirational stories including that of zach washington who completed the half marathon who was told after the Bestival bus crash he would never walk again, no one should understimate the power of a Scouser! one thing I must mention is that the whole of the weekend, the presence and work of merseyside Police was just outstanding - making everyone feel at ease whilst being totally in control of every situation, reassuring members of the public who were apprehensive... I have never felt safer, or more proud of this city.

it and thought to myself im being noticed for being myself and my personality came across to the scout who is Pat hughes. from that moment it has given me confidence and embracement in this particular field.
THOMAS KHAN HEAD SPORTS INJURY THERAPIST AT LIVERPOOL SPORT CLINIC CHATS TO LIFESTYLE ABOUT BEING CROWNED MR LIVERPOOL 2017 so how were you scouted for Mr liverpool? I was working at the Liverpool rock n roll marathon providing complementary treatments and injury advice when I got approached and asked if it would be something I would consider, having never been asked the question nor being involved with any of this before was pretty overwhelming. So the Liverpool scout, for miss Liverpool and mr. Liverpool, scouted me. What were your initial thoughts when you were scouted? my initial thoughts were I was shocked and I was overwhelmed because nothing like this had happened to myself before so it was a little daunting. But then I embraced 32
Have you ever modelled before? with this particular competition it is not solely based on looks it is how you are as a person and how you come across and what you are like as a person the modeling is just an aspect so it has to be noted that it isn’t just modeling it how people are in public how they condone themselves how they act and what they do for communities and charities. Before this I had never modeled before but after doing three shoots now its becoming normal and more comfortable. do you think this title will encourage you to explore modelling further? I think yes this will encourage me to explore the modeling field further and look at different avenues in modeling to potentially explore and look into doing different types. Has winning the title opened up any opportunities for you? at the moment becoming mr. Liverpool has and is giving me the opportunity to attend events and talk to people about the short journey and to talk about what it is but also get to know them on a more personal level. I believe over the course of the next
few years yes it will open up more and more opportunities for myself. What do your friends and family think of you winning? at the beginning they all laughed and ribbed me had a good laugh and torment but now I think they are overwhelmed and really happy for me they want all the best and will support me through my journey. they are so supportive of me winning the mr. Liverpool competition and just want the best for me next month when I compete on the national stage for the coveted mr. England title which if won represents England on the national scale. So again they are supporting me through this time. which is all I want and need. How do you keep fit? I keep fit by running 5mornings a week, which includes long distance running, as well as hIIt circuits and tabata training with sprints. as well as going to the gym 6days per week, usually after work at night

ME HAPPY Bodybuilder Ronnie Orr tells Lifestyle what makes me happy When did you start bodybuilding and why? It all started in 2000 and I haven’t looked back since.I'd had a lengthy football career playing till I was 42 when the legs went so I wanted to keep myself in shape so I tried playing golf for a couple of years and did ok but found it wasn't enough to satisfy my overall fitness levels , so I join a leisure gym but found that this wasn't was I was looking for then I joined Billy jones gym21 in
Kensington and I've never regretted it. Billy had been my mentor (mr universe 1996) we both planned how I trained what I'd eat and when with one goal in mind to step on stage with the elite of bodybuilding and that's what I've managed to achieve with two top placing at the uKBff mr Britain What diet do you have to follow when you are training? It’s very regimented but I have 8 eggs for breakfast (6 yolks and 2 egg whites). for lunch I have fish and vegetables and potatoes, mid afternoon I refuel with a protein shake and for dinner I have white fish and rice with greens. I am very disciplined, you have to be when you are competing.when I'm focused and have a goal in mind , i.e. a competition my training is very much the number one priority I plan every session what I do the weight I lift and the sets I'm required . this is planned to last 18 weeks and it's total focus in each session at the end of every week it's time to monitor the progress by way of a mirror session with Billy I'm stood in a 360 degree mirror room so nothing gets missed every body part is under scrutiny and at the end of the viewing we agree the next week’s focus I enjoy the period of seeing my body change completely over 18 weeks in readiness for being stage ready tell us the background to your Bodybuilding competitions

I have won many regional awards and came 5th most recently in mr Britain finals . Each day I have to train two different body parts. I am in the gym every day in the lead up to an event. What opportunities has it created? It has opened up for me in many ways not only getting fit and training my body for competitions but ask compering major body building shows. Just recently in the past few months I have been hired to present for naPa tv via live streaming to 115 countries worldwide. you get to meet so many people along the journey and I have learned a lot about myself too, I appreciate every day of my life. What are your plans for the future? I am actually taking some time off as in the last year I took part in five shows, winning three. I came third in another and eighth in Britain which was a fantastic achievement and I am very proud. So I will be competing again in 2018. But as for this year, I shall be spending time with my family. Why does it make you happy? It focuses me on being healthy which makes me feel good. I don’t drink or smoke so this is my addiction. It makes me feel grateful for each day, for living clean and eating clean and training hard keeps your focused on success in all aspects of my life.

liverpool has unveiled ambitious plans to host a bold 2022 Commonwealth Games that will speed up the transformation of its world famous waterfront and leave a lasting legacy for communities across the city and region.
Central to Liverpool’s unique bid to stage the games is the riverside regeneration of the Bramley-moore dock – just two miles north of the city centre – which would be home to Everton football Club’s new stadium. as part of Liverpool’s transformational plan, which is predicted to accelerate £1bn of investment up to 10 years ahead of schedule and create more than 12,000 jobs, the city is also proposing to host: a key element of Liverpool’s mould-breaking plan is to host the athletes village beside Everton fC’s new stadium in nelson dock, within Peel Land and Property’s
£5.5bn Liverpool waters scheme – residential developments that already have outline planning permission meaning construction could start in the first half of 2018. Its official bid website: www.liverpoolCg22.org has a call to action for the public to back the bid via social media with the hashtag #IamLiverpool202 Steve Parry, three times Commonwealth games medallist and Liverpool 2022 Bid ambassador, said: “having competed at three Commonwealth games I know what a special event it is and that Liverpool, my home city, would be the perfect host. the plans to create a pool in the city centre
docks are an absolute knockout and a world first for swimming. It will place swimming at the heart of the games experience and provides a swimming legacy that would be a must-see visitor attraction. these games would be a great springboard for Liverpool.” the total cost of hosting the Liverpool 2022 Commonwealth games is anticipated to be in the region of £672 million, with £547 million expected to come from the public sector. Liverpool City Council will contribute a quarter of this [£137 million] from its “invest to earn” strategy and existing resources as well as through various income steams raised from the games.

advertisers spend 100s of billions of pounds a year worldwide[1] encouraging, persuading and manipulating people into a consumer lifestyle that has devastating consequences for the environment through its extravagance and wastefulness. advertising exploits individual insecurities, creates false needs and offers counterfeit solutions. It fosters dissatisfaction that leads to consumption. Children are particularly vulnerable to this sort of manipulation. young children are increasingly the target of advertising and marketing because of the amount of money they spend themselves, the influence they have on their parents spending (pester power) and because of the money they will spend when they grow up.whilst this child-targetted marketing used to concentrate on sweets and toys, it now includes clothes, shoes, a range of fast foods, sports equipment, computer products and toiletries as well as adult products such as cars and credit cards. the Christmas advertising campaigns on tv, john Lewis, for example, are aimed to tug 46

SEWING SKILLS SHORTAGE EXPOSED: SIX IN TEN PEOPLE FROM LIVERPOOL CAN’T SEW CONFIDENTLY OR AT ALL To celebrate national sewing Machine day, the BHf is on a mission to bring back sewing. Buy an item from a BHf charity shop and personalise your wardrobe throughout July to help beat heart disease half of people from Liverpool say that sewing is a skill that is being lost in today’s generation, with over half of residents (52%) having to ask their mothers to help fix their clothes .these surprising statistics have been released on national Sewing machine day (tuesday 13 June) by the British heart foundation (Bhf) for its Big Stitch Campaign. taking place throughout July, the Big Stitch encourages consumers to pop into a Bhf shop, buy an item(s) and inject their own fashion flair to it to help fund life saving research into heart disease. Six in ten (60%) of people polled revealed they are unable to sew confidently or at all, with around a third (31%) of people revealing that they were never even taught how to sew. the absence of sewing skills in today’s society means over half of residents have to ask their mothers to help fix their clothes and over one in ten asks their grandparents for help.
Bhf, adds, “as the largest charity retailer in Europe, we want to bring sewing back to life. It always amazes me to see how clothes can be transformed so easily and cheaply, so we are really looking forward to seeing what the thousands of style seekers across the uK can create throughout July. all of our customers will be helping us raise £100 million to invest in heart research this year, so visit your local shop, buy an item and inject your own style stamp on your clothes this July.” By visiting one of around 750 Bhf charity shops across the uK, buying an item and adding a touch of individual fashion flair to it, shoppers can save a bit of cash and help support life saving research in the fight against heart disease. for further information on The Big stitch, which runs from the 1st to 31st July, and information about how to locate your nearest BHf shop visit bhf.org.uk/TheBigstitch

around a quarter of those polled can’t even sew on a button on properly, around two fifths of people cannot alter the length of their trousers and three in ten cannot mend a rip in their clothes. over one in ten (12%) said that if they lost a button, they would buy a new item of clothing instead of fixing it. It has also resulted in residents in the region spending over £7 million fixing or tailoring clothes and £18 million replacing items of clothing due to an easilyrepairable fault last year. around 1.5 million items of clothing were thrown or given away in Liverpool due to a fault that could have been repaired. however, all is not lost as over two fifths (44%) of people in Liverpool wish they could sew and around six in ten (55%) are willing to learn the money-saving skill. the Bhf’s Big Stitch campaign gives people the perfect opportunity to either put into practice their sewing skills or learn how easy it is to personalise their wardrobe. for a whole month, style seekers will be encouraged to put their own stamp on their wardrobe by visiting a Bhf shop and personalising items bought in-store by practising sewing and dressmaking skills. Jax Black, Senior Costume technician at London College of fashion, said, “It is great to see the Bhf championing sewing and dressmaking skills. making alterations, adding buttons, trims, embroidery, and other decorative items to your Bhf purchases is a great way to update your wardrobe this July.” allison Swaine-hughes, Retail operations director at the

By summer of last year the owners had also acquired northgrant, one of the South west's longest established scaffolding firms. now, following large-scale projects in wrexham and Blackburn, P&d Scaffolding has moved its operations to the northwest and has a number of Liverpool jobs in the pipeline.
a blue plaque was unveiled outside mathew Street’s iconic music venue, Eric’s Club today. the plaque was awarded to Eric’s Club by BBC Radio merseyside to commemorate the venue that has played host to a raft of major acts over the years. acts that have graced the stage at Eric’s include Elvis Costello, Buzzcocks, the Clash, Joy division, Ramones, Sex Pistols, wah!, new order and much more. the blue plaque was unveiled outside the venue by Liverpool-born singer songwriter and former front man of wah!, Pete wylie. general manager of the Rubber Soul Complex, part of the JSm group, that owns the new look Eric’s venue, Jimmy Boland said: "Eric's in its new format continues to champion new talent.
P&d Scaffolding Limited was failing when it was bought by James Proudfoot in January 2016. In just a few short months, mr Proudfoot turned the company's fortunes around and welcomed Liverpool based Richard anderson on board as his business partner. together, the pair landed a number of high-profile public and private sector clients, including Lloyds Bank, halifax and virgin, amongst others. then, in June 2016, they undertook the purchase of northgrant Scaffolding, a Bristol company with 30 years of experience and a great reputation. the pair's most significant client win to date has been construction company Keepmoat homes. the relationship with Keepmoat has been instrumental in facilitating P&d Scaffolding's move to the northwest. P&d Scaffolding is currently working on two Keepmoat sites, one in wrexham and the other in Blackburn, playing it's part in the construction of two nursing homes. to support the northwest expansion, P&d Scaffolding has now moved its head office to widnes. Several sites here in mr anderson's home city of Liverpool are in the company's pipeline. announcements will follow soon. for more info see www.northgrantscaffolding.co.uk

A COMMeMORATiVe paving stone has been unveiled in memory of a liverpool docker, a century to the day since he was awarded the Victoria Cross during World War 1. the stone was laid in honour of william Ratcliffe (1884-1963) who was presented with the victoria Cross in 1917 whilst serving with the South Lancashire Regiment (now amalgamated into the duke of Lancaster’s Regiment), on wednesday 14th June at Liverpool Parish Church. william – known as Bill was born at 38 newhall Street in the dingle, and was a pupil at St vincent's School in nearby norfolk Street. when he left school, william worked on the Liverpool docks before joining the British army at the age of 17 and served in South africa during the Second Boer war. after serving, he returned to the docks until the outbreak of wwI when he re-joined his old regiment.
In april 1917, during the Battle of messines, william Ratcliffe was awarded a military medal for gallantry and on 14th June, only a matter of weeks later, earned his victoria Cross. he was 33 years old and a Private in the 2nd Battalion, the South Lancashire Regiment, when his battalion was ordered to attack a line of german trenches on messines Ridge. william Ratcliffe was a stretcher-bearer, following up behind the advancing troops to bring in the casualties, and spent most of the night bringing in the wounded through a heavy barrage. he also located an enemy machine-gun which was firing on his comrades from the rear, picked up a rifle from a dead comrade and single-handedly rushed the machinegun position and bayoneted the crew. he then brought the gun back into action on the frontline. his actions brought the award of the victoria Cross, with which he was invested personally by King george v at Buckingham Palace on the 26th September 1917. when the war was over, Bill again returned to his job on Liverpool docks where he was affectionately known as “the dockers vC”. In 1956, celebrations were held in London to mark the centenary of the victoria Cross and all living holders were invited to be reviewed by the Queen in hyde Park. Bill was reluctant to attend as he couldn’t afford to buy a suit for the occasion. when this became apparent, the South Lancashire Regimental association intervened and a local gentleman’s outfitters readily made him a new suit free of charge, and Bill travelled to London. he never married and later lived with relatives at St oswald's gardens in old Swan. he died on 26th march 1963, aged 79, and is buried at allerton Cemetery. his medals, including his victoria Cross and military medal, are on loan to the Imperial war museum London. the german maxim machine-gun which he captured that day in 1917 is on
display at the Lancashire Infantry museum. his citation in the London gazette reads: "for most conspicuous bravery. after an enemy’s trench had been captured, Pte. Ratcliffe located an enemy machine gun which was firing on his comrades from the rear, whereupon, single-handed and on his own initiative, he immediately rushed the machine gun position and bayonetted the crew. he then brought the gun back into action in the front line. this very gallant soldier has displayed great resource on previous occasions, and has set an exceptionally fine example of devotion to duty." the commemorative stone is part of a national scheme run by the department for Communities and Local government (dCLg) which will see every world war one victoria Cross recipient remembered in this way. the event was attended by Liverpool’s Lord mayor, Councillor malcolm Kennedy, veterans and serving military representatives and also relatives of william Ratcliffe. the Lord mayor said: “william Ratcliffe was a gallant and fearless soldier whose selfless actions saved many lives. he was completely devoted to his duty. “Liverpool is incredibly proud of him and this is why we are honouring him with this fitting ceremony on the centenary of his vC award. the summer holidays are just around the corner and is it me but is everyone feeling a little nervous? at one point I thought about cancelling all my theatre trips but then that would be letting the terrorists win. the day after the manchester atrocity I had to carry on with manchester fashion week, it was one of the hardest events I have ever had to direct but I wasn’t going to let the designers down, all of whom had spent months creating their collections, two had flown in from abroad. my team produced one of the best shows ever, understandably the audience wasn’t there to see it. the recent heinous attacks are still fresh in our minds and sometimes I find myself questioning my route to events and even debating whether to go at all. But I will never let fear become my enemy. my son celebrates the end of his gCSEs with a holiday to Barcelona this month and while I am incredibly excited for him, a part of me is also terrified. But not once have I thought about cancelling his trip. for that is what the the terrorists want. my children are growing up and reaching independent and I am excited for their newfound freedom. I encourage them to venture out and I have aways said since they were born, that for their 21st birthday their present will be a flight to anywhere in the world. I have already travelled abroad twice this year and plan two more trips overseas. I will be spending the entire next month in Cyprus. the greatest gift you can pass on is the joy of travel and adventure. terror is amongst us but I feel it is no different to the days when I was growing up in London. we had IRa attacks, the Lockerbie bombing and individual incidents totalling 13 worldwide in the 1990s. we must always be on our guard, we must always remain vigilant but above all, we must always carry on and not be defeated by murderous cowards who prey on the innocent. Life is very precious and we must make the most of every minute Amanda x
