S MALL B U S I N E S S NEW craft beer...

Above: Myself, my wife Maria an d our brew maste r Mickele Cartaino

OCTOPUS BEER When I found out that the brewery in Sotira with excellent machinery were selling, I decided to invest.

Where are they stocked? The craft beer is the totally different world of beers. The main differences are non filtration and non posterization which provides natural taste and aroma inside your bottle. So, to keep all benefits, we store beer in cold storage at 5C.

What do you produce and what is the process of making your drinks? We started with the classics; Lager and Weisse. The most important aspect to the

Have you always wanted to open a brewery? Not always, It wasn’t my dream from the childhood, but as a creative person I’ve decided to accept this new challenge.

Cyprus’ first elegant craft beer microbrewery is bubbling up a storm in their village of Sotira. Lifestyle chats to co-owner Taras Lozhenko who bought the brewery last year.

8

What is the story behind it and what inspired you to open it? I`m an artist and graphic designer. And I worked with big beer companies in advertising and marketing sphere. So I know world beer market and world trends in beer. Craft beer has become really popular all over the world, and now it’s coming to Cyprus.

success of a brewer is experience so we invited a Brew Master we know from the Czech republic. Roman Kozak has his own beer school and he launched brewery all around Europe. He brews lager with us in unique recipe special for Cyprus climate. We brew weisse beer with Michele Cartaino. But our “princess” is Session IPA. For craft beer lovers, IPA is most popular kind of beer with particular flavour. We wanted to create the flavours of the Mediterranean. If you didn’t try Session IPA yet, I`m jealous, because a big surprise is waiting for you! We shoot a lot of video about our production. You can find on our YouTube page. Octo Microbrewery.

Was it difficult to set up? Any obstacles you overcame? To be honest, Yes. First time I was working with Custom Department and Excise. It”s a new experience for me. But department employees help to sort out the documents and we strictly follow the procedure. Of course, technical issues arise in production. I wrote above that the equipment on the brewery is of the highest class, so there are no special problems. Beer is a product that will bring back your passion and honour. If you use natural ingredients without chemicals, flavours and preservatives, if you follow the correct recipe and technology, you will end up with an excellent beer. How many bottles do you produce every year? It’s our first year, so we produce around 8 000 litres. What’s your signature product? We will brew it this September. It will be Grape ALE. OMG! I cant wait to taste it. We use grape juice in production. It will be unbelievable taste. What’s the difference between a brewery and a microbrewery? The

main difference is philosophy. We do not make large batches and we want to make unique high quality beer. Exclusively for beer lovers. We will not cover the whole market, we will never be in every store and restaurant. We make unique beers for those who want to drink unique beers. And there are more and more such people. The principal difference in technology is nonpasteurized and nonfiltered beer made from natural ingredients of a long maturation process. For example, we keep our lager for 2 months. Typically a large brewery makes lager in 5-7 days. How has the pandemic affected you? (drinks sales in the US doubled during lockdown!) We are happy for US, but Cyprus is not like this. Tourists are not coming. But we have managed this situation and looked at other areas to attract customers. And high quality beer is working good. Malthouse, Di Capilla are always full. They have unique and quality offers on the market. What are you plans for the future with the business? We created a beer museum about

European and Cyprus beer history. You smile? What beer history in Cyprus? Yes, its 3800 years of history. Welcome to museum and you will know that Cyprus was one of first country in the world where beer was started. Also we plan to made premium and unique kinds of beer. Beer, which possible to brew only in Cyprus. What has been your biggest lesson since starting the business? Reputation in Cyprus is the most important thing. Especially for me, like foreigners, I have to keep good relations with customers. Quality of beer is face of restaurant owner in front of customers. And after good cooperation, our customers become friends. A good lesson was when we tried to meet with bar owners from our area and just walked in off the street. We came ourselves and tried to talk about business. It wasn’t working. Some friend has to introduce you to the owner of the bar, so you can start to talk.

Visiting hours including taster session and museum tour is €20 pp: Tuesdays 4pm - Saturdays 11am Book at http://octo.beer/en/mainpage-craftbeer-microbrewery or call 97 669447

UK Nationals – the UK has left the EU building!

A

s you are all aware, the UK has left the EU and is now in a transition period. To that end, the UK government is working with organisations to help and assist UK Nationals living in EU countries who need residency advice and support. One of those organisations is the Cyprus Residency Planning Group (CRPG) whose remit is to help UK Nationals who may find it hard to complete all the paperwork, particularly pensioners and disabled; those living in remote areas or with mobility difficulties and those needing assistance with language translation or interpretation and who, for whatever reason, cannot respond and help themselves. In other words, people deemed at risk.

slip, alien registration book or a stamp in your passport are no longer valid and MUST be replaced.

MEU1 or an MEU3 – and what the difference is. There still seems to be some misinformation and confusion out there. So, in a nutshell – if you have lived in Cyprus for more than 90 days BUT less than 5 years, you need to apply for an MEU1 and if you have lived in Cyprus for 5 years or more, you need to apply for an MEU3.

All old-style residency documents such as the blue form, pink

Please visit the CRPG website cyprus-crpg.org for more information and for those of you who are considering residency and who might be new to Cyprus please also look at the GOV.UK information site Living in Cyprus Guide. CRPG officially opened for business in April 2020, when the Help Desk sprang into action and began the process of taking calls from people seeking advice on whether to apply for an 11

reathe happy (www.breathe-happy. com) launches their COMMUTER reusable face mask priced just £24.99. Now, with face masks now compulsory in all shops and soon to be more there’s a better, safer, more costeffective, greener alternative to the everpresent disposable paper or reusable cloth face masks that lots of people are now wearing in an attempt to keep Covid-19 at bay.

COVID-19

COVER MEASURES

The Cypriot health cabinet has laid out its measures for tackling cover 19 which will not be revised until January 15 2021.

T

hese include a ban on private gatherings of over 50 people such as birthday, beach and any parties in private homes or public venues. Screenings involving 5000 people will take place every 2 weeks in places where people gather such as bars, restaurants, malls and universities. The screens will initially target

12

people age 18 and 40 as these groups have seen the most rise in infections recently. The maximum number of guests at a wedding dinner is 350 while people at the reception cannot exceed 250 per hour. The maximum number of people in a restaurant is 150 inside and 250 outside. Customers must remain seated and cannot

be served at the bar. Fairs, festivals, and concerts remain banned even if held outdoors. Plays and concerns held in outdoor amphitheatres is allowed provided the spectators remain seated with the proper distance between them. Conferences and general meetings are allowed provided the health and safety protocols are applied. The ministry also plans sample testing in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and other similar places.

H EALTH There’s no quick fix to losing weight but you can get a helping hand from InfraslimX & Solarium Studio in Deryneia

T

his space ship looking capsule is an incredible machine fitted with pedals so you cycle to the beat of the music and you can burn up to 800 calories in just a 30 minute session. Yes really! It’s recommended you book a course of a minimum of 10 sessions twice a week to really see the results. You have to put on a special skirt which trains your waist and helps you sweat as you pedal. The bottom of then skirt is attached to the mouth of the capsule, covering your legs and then red light therapy is blasted on your

legs, boosting collagen which smooths your legs and bum and reduces cellulite. In addition to this oxygen therapy is also applied; as you pedal you wear a tube attached to your nose to breath in oxygen. It’s like having a nebuliser and is fantastic for asthmatics. The best results are when you keep up your pedalling confidently during your session, obviously, to burn more calories. It’s an incredible workout in which times really flies and you sweat bucketloads so it’s essential to bring a towel to lie on and drink plenty of water.

H EALTH

BY REBECCA GRANVILLE

ME & MY TRIATHLON

I

had been running for a couple of years when I went to watch the first ever Ayia Napa triathlon in April 2015. I was captivated and a friend suggested we try it. At 42 years of age I thought these things were only for athletes not novices like me - but there were all ages, abilities, shapes & sizes competing. So off I go to purchase my first ever ‘road bike’, wondering how you even stay upright on those skinny wheels!! Next challenge was learning to swim properly. Luckily, I have a good friend who is a swimming instructor, so she kindly helped teach me how to swim freestyle. I went from only being able to breathe for 2 seconds to actually swimming over 500m continuously. The rest as they say is history and a month later in May 2015 I took part in Larnaca sprint distance triathlon. What a learning curve!! The nerves kicked in & I panicked - I swam it all breast stroke. Trying to run after cycling is also a new experience. Your legs

14

do not feel like they belong to you. Since then I have competed in many sprint distance triathlons where you swim 750m, cycle 20k & run 5k. I have also finished 3 Olympic distance triathlons 1.5k swim, 40k cycle, 10k run. My next challenge is a half ironman before I am 50. It is now my passion, I love it….good to push yourself out of your comfort zone & get that adrenaline pumping. I have made amazing friends & training buddies. It is the best fun and social able at the same time. I obtained my Cyprus sports health card in 2018 so I now compete as a federation athlete and am a member of Keravnos Triathlon team based in Nicosia. I also have swim training at the new Paralimni pool, with the amazing coaches George & Demetra of Nautical Club of Constantia.

My advice to anyone looking for a new challenge – you’re never too old to start!

FITN E S S

GEORGINA BELL

After months of lockdown and restricted access to gyms, you’re probably carrying a few extra kilos around. But fear not! Top Paralimni fitness instructor, Georgina Bell, is ready to whip you into shape. A certified instructor with Les Mills, Pilates and TRX,she explains how Covid-19 has affected the local fitness industry. How has the pandemic has affected gyms and fitness centre Like all businesses, it has had a devastating effect, but I’m really amazed and inspired by how creative local trainers and instructors have been. It seems like every gym has a different solution that works for their clients: some are offering outdoor workouts, others are offering gym time by appointment, I know of quite a few who provided online classes which are still going strong. Most gyms in our area are independently owned and have really suffered financially but are doing their best to keep their doors open and serve the needs of their clients. How has Covid-19 changed the way you personally offer fitness classes? Before lockdown, my classes were held at a fantastic local facility. When gyms were ordered closed, I taught online 5 nights

a week and sent sets of weights and bars home with my members. Post lockdown, I’ve had to find a location with larger floor space to accommodate my members and I’m really thankful that’s worked out. From September I’ll be able to offer my full timetable of classes with correct social distancing and other health measures. It will be different but I’m so glad I get to keep doing what I love. What advice would you give to someone who is worried about money and wondering if they can afford a gym membership? I would encourage everyone to make fitness a priority, especially because of the pandemic. A body which is strong, fit and healthy is better able to fight off illness and recover quicker when it does become unwell. There’s also the added benefit that exercise helps us emotionally and is a great

stress reliever. It’s great to exercise outdoors as well (which is free) but I think joining a fitness centre or attending fitness classes builds in accountability, inspires you to set goals with your ‘gym buddies,’ and gives you access to professionals who can help you get a better and longer-lasting result. It’s true that a gym membership is a bit of an investment, but you’re also supporting local businesses owned by members of the community. Most of us don’t think twice about buying a coffee or takeaway, and a monthly gym fee is pretty much the same! Obviously, I’m a bit biased but I do truly believe that the money we spend on our health is always money well spent. Call: 07800224 www.georginabell.net @befitFunctionalGym

FEMALE LED COUNTRIES' COVID-19 OUTCOMES “SYSTEMATICALLY AND SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER” openness to international

F

emale national leaders locked down earlier and suffered half as many COVID deaths on average as male leaders, according to analysis across 194 countries by the University of Liverpool. With New Zealand now the first country to record zero cases over consecutive days and Germany the first to resume competitive top level sports, their respective female leaders have received plenty of praise, but researchers found that even when outliers like New Zealand and Germany – and the USA for male leaders were removed from the statistics, the case for the relative success of female leaders was only strengthened.

16

University of Liverpool Management School Developmental Economist, Professor Supriya Garikipati and her colleague at the University of Reading, Professor Uma Kambhampati, analysed differing policy responses and subsequent total

COVID cases and deaths across 194 countries for the first quarter of the pandemic, up to May 19.

Professor Supriya Garikipati said: “Our results clearly indicate that women leaders reacted more quickly and decisively in the face of potential fatalities.” “In almost all cases, they locked down earlier than male leaders in similar circumstances.” “While this may have longer-term economic implications, it has certainly helped these countries to save lives, as evidenced by the significantly lower number of deaths in these countries.”

travel and general level of societal gender equality. “And with only 19 of the 194 countries being led by women, the report reveals s that “while women leaders were risk averse with regard to lives, they were prepared to take significant risks with their economies by locking down early” suggesting “risk aversion may manifest differently in different domains, with women leaders being significantly more risk averse in the domain of human life, but more risk taking in the domain of the economy”.

To reach this conclusion, the academics introduced a number of variables to help analyse the raw data and draw reliable country comparisons.

Professor Garkipati said: “Our findings show that COVID outcomes are systematically and significantly better in countries led by women and, to some extent, this may be explained by the proactive policy responses they adopted.

They considered GDP, total population, urban population density and the proportion of elderly residents; they also looked at annual health expenditure per capita,

“Even accounting for institutional context and other controls, being female-led has provided countries with an advantage in the current crisis.”

Whatever the persona, whatever the formula, our most decorated chefs are where they are because of their ability to perform, manage and excel in one of the most stressful work environments imaginable. And Gordon Ramsay is certainly in the melting pot when it comes to imaging, appreciating and respecting the most inspirational food influencers of our day. “I’m the same as anyone else,” begins the fiery Scot. “I’m the product of discipline, bloodymindedness, passion, being organised, being clear in my goal, and perhaps even a bit of selfishness.” “You know, success won’t just fall onto your lap – you’re going to have to work hard for it; but I will guarantee you that with the right amount of effort and a basic requirement that you’re not an idiot, you can get somewhere… anyone can.” Of course, the Gordon Ramsay we encounter away from the pressured atmosphere of the restaurant is very different to that bullish, bulldozing, bombastic character who stomps, swears and curses

his way through various globally distributed television series and concepts. Without for a moment suggesting the 53-yearold is softening in his middle years, in conversation he is reflective, grateful for what he has, loving and funny… although still unapologetically brash. “My advice on this one has always been the same,” he says, addressing his love of an expletive. “If you don’t like it on your television, turn over. You have to appreciate the pressures of the kitchen and that environment. It looks like a lovely serene, woolly, fluffy place front-of-house and that’s the whole point – you wouldn’t want to keep turning up for meals where the staff were ripping shreds off one another; but it needs to be high pressure out the back. And only when you’ve seen that situation do you really appreciate what it is we go through. “ “It’s stress – pure, unadulterated stress. It’s not pleasant for anyone, and someone being offended by an expletive is really going to be the least of my worries!” Through all his crudeness, in 2020 Gordon Ramsay’s eponymous empire is

a meticulously curated, globally renowned brand. Much of that is down to its founder’s measured pursuit of what he is good at – never allowing the lure of expansion to divert him into areas outside his comfort zone, he’s always acted quickly when challenges approach. And never was critical action more required than in spring this year when the Coronavirus pandemic struck. As expected, some sections of the press leapt on his furloughing of an estimated 500 members of staff, but the blanket shutdown of hospitality across almost the entirety of his global portfolio – that’s an empire of 34 restaurants and bars, 16 of which are in London – has provided the greatest commercial challenge in his two decades in business. “We have to imagine these as new openings,” he told the press in June. “Forget the salt and pepper, it’s hand sanitiser. Forget the long-winded descriptions, forget table sides. Temperature checks — all these things are going to come into play.” Tough times are to follow, undoubtedly, but the knowledge that Ramsay will bounce back is deepseated. This is someone

who has the experience to see through a challenge. “The older I get the more resilient I become. People talk about young people having thick skin and always able to bounce back, but personally I’ve found greater strength in my middle years. The philosophy is ‘if it hasn’t killed me so far, it probably won’t now.” Such belligerence is the Ramsay way, and we really wouldn’t want an alternative version of the decorated chef and restaurateur. “I’m Marmite, I know that,” he says. “Some love it, others hate it. Some understand it, but ultimately it’s about working hard, achieving something, getting the job done. That’s not a crime.” And the temper…? “A temper? Me?” He chips back, with a wry smile. “I think the big thing is wanting a job to get to the point where you sit back and savour it. And the fact is, if you have some idiot stood in your way, preventing that, then of course you’re going to get mad.” The phrase, ‘if you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen,’ – Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen, in fact – never seemed so appropriate.

CONTROVERSIAL FOUR-LANE MOTORWAY BETWEEN EVRYCHOU AND ASTROMERITIS PLANNED BY 2023

A

study for a fourlane motorway between Evrychou and Astromeritis has been handed over to the public works department in a bid to ease traffic congestion in the area,. The road, which has been in the works for 50 years, will be a 12.9 km stretch of highway costing €70 million, and is expected to be completed by 2023.

The government has been pushing for this plan as 41,000 cars are estimated to travel on the road every day. They believe it will increase safety on the roads in the rural Nicosia area and better connect the villages of that area to the capital. The motorway is planned as an extension of the Nicosia-KokkinotrimithiaAstromeritis road.

In the environmental studies, part of the road is planned to cut through a protected Natura 2000 area in ‘Atsa- Ayios Theodoros’. However, since the political decision for the road’s construction was made, the government is planning to promote it as a public interest project to better the quality of life, despite cutting through the Natura area.

CALLING ALL INVESTORS IN

CYPRUS LLC is a UK based holiday letting company attracting investment from Cyprus to the UK for the purpose of sourcing, acquiring, renovating, adapting property to create self service accommodation in the UK. Why Cyprus.

Why UK.

One of the Directors is now based in Cyprus with great connections. Cyprus is geographically in Europe but strategically close to North Africa, Turkey, Syria and other Arab speaking nations and is currently attracting inward investment from China as well as the nations already mentioned.

Economically, socially and technically the world is changing rapidly and we believe investors will look to secure their futures by investing in a country that historically thrived under huge challenges, by way of example WW2, whilst at the same time supporting free markets. Though things change we believe a free market economy is a value that the British Economy will not suppress.

LLC has connections with a publication that can serve to attract inward investment to the UK. In essence we can serve, develop, attract and close deals of inward investment to the UK.

Given the government has left Europe as a trading bloc the government will seek to open up new markets from the Americas to Austral-Asia continents which will inevitably be good news for ports such as Liverpool, Hull & Southampton bringing inward jobs and investment. LLC will seek to capitalise on this opportunity.

The Pandemic could justifiably curb enthusiasm for overseas visits making holiday breaks in the UK more attractive. Call +44 151 236 503 or Email Info@lifestylelivingcyprus.com

K E E P CYPR U S TIDY

MEET MAGGIE WRIGHT, CAMPAIGNER TO KEEP CYPRUS TIDY Why did you set up Keep Cyprus Tidy I started a litter pick up campaign around Kamares Village where I live and Tala, as the rubbish left on the sides of the roads was getting worse and I had to try and do something about it. A small group of volunteers, including an 85 year old, came along for an hour on Saturday mornings and were designated a road to pick up the litter. Tala Council donated some huge bags and they were filled after the hour. I occasionally tackled the main road but it was too dangerous as the cars would drive quite close so I gave up especially as my partner was unhappy with me doing it. The number of volunteers dwindled and I felt it was a losing battle but I still keep the facebook page running. What can people do to help People just need to take their rubbish home and recycle what they can as there are so many plastic bottles, cans and cigarette packets 30

which are thrown on the roads. I know Droushia organize litter pickups although they haven’t since lockdown and the heat, but intend to restart soon; their central roads are being cobbled which hopefully will give more incentive to keep their village clean; perhaps each village could do the same. Plastic takes up to 1000 years to decompose in landfills, but plastic bags we use in our everyday life take 10-20 years to decompose, while plastic bottles take 450 years. This is dangerous to our sealife.

his year has definitely been a reset, refocus and rest year. Since spring when everything literally shut down our planet Mother Earth has had a well earned rest, our focus has shifted from taking everything for granted that we had all material needs met by the push of a button (internet shopping), being able to travel wherever and whenever, day to day work, kids in school, trying to balance our busy hectic lives to completely stopping altogether. As we embark on a new season, where do we go from here? September brings us the last harvest of fruits and grain the abundance from the Goddess planet we live on and through this we gather the seeds for next year. The Autumn Equinox is around 21st-23rd of September where the sun and moon are aligned in the sky for the same amount of time then the nights start to get longer.

This is the third quarter of the year so let’s start it with good intentions to ward of any negativity or fears of a second wave of COVID-19. When you feel safe, you feel happier and your immune system will stay strong and not be put under pressure from stress. Start your day with hot water and a slice of lemon in it to kick start your liver. This will make you feel lighter. In the morning light a candle and list 10 things your truly grateful for. To do this open your heart and listen to what really makes you happy, feel yourself glow and begin to write the list. Then place your hands on your heart and say thank you, really feel it throughout your whole body. Then rub your hands together and make an imaginary ball in between your hands, expand your hands and mould the energy in to the size of a beach ball. Then visualise positive energy into this ball, you can make it any colour you like and

even add glitter inside! There is no limits. Ask your Guardian Angel to add some angelic vibes and Archangel Jophiel to add some joy, and the goddess Aphrodite to add some love. Then throw it to someone or a situation or a place on Mother Earth that you know needs healing. This is your service work, When you have done this place your hands on your heart. This is the balance of saying thanks and sending love. Add fruit to your diet especially apples as they are ripe and full of goodness. Take an evening walk in nature, be mindful and give thanks for all your surroundings. This will ground any excess energy from your day. This helps you feel balanced. Then take time for meditation and ask yourself what would you like to have happen next year? Where do you see yourself? And begin your manifestation for the next year with your new energy seeds that you can plant.

“Our restaurant, our life’’

Our dream was to one day create good service for tourists that would make their holidays here in Cyprus, even more special. This dream came true in 1989, where we established a small family business in Ayia Napa, a restaurant, as I (Theo) am a trained chef and my brother (Peter) is a trained waiter. Since then we have tried our best to provide as much satisfaction as possible to our customers.

There’s a reason why Flames Restaurant is listed as one of Trip Avisor’s top ten restaurants in Ayia Napa. Dedicated to providing an excellent service, its winning mix of friendly staff, a great atmosphere and delicious food has delighted diners since it was established 1989. If traditional Cypriot dishes are what your after, Flames is the place to go. You’ll find House Specialities, Steak, Grills, Fish, Pasta Vegan and Vegetarian Dishes on the Menu. Not to mention its fabulous Wine list and homemade desserts - all chosen to complement your meal perfectly.
