“I am 5ft 1 and was always overweight. I was always cast as the Roseanne Barr, I have always played fat birds. I have been in Brookside, 12 films, the National Theatre and Shameless. I have been lucky to act alongside the greats such as Ricky Tomlinson and Pete Postlethwaite but it was never about me feeling pressure to be thin. The bottom line is that if you overeat you get fat. There is no other excuse. And being bi polar was a great excuse for me to have my head stuck in the biscuit tin. Now, for the first time in my life, I want to be 7 stones, to be thin in myself and also next year I want a baby, I am having tests for IVF and I would give it all up now if I could have a baby.”

SEFTON PARK GAINS NATIONAL AWARD LIVERPOOL’S Sefton Park has been recognised as one of the most important in the country.

Not only has it been awarded a Green Flag but it has gained Green Heritage Site Accreditation which is sponsored by English Heritage and is given in recognition that it has achieved high standards in the management and interpretation of a site with local or national historic importance. Only about 50 parks throughout the country have been awarded this accreditation And the Sefton Park Palm House has retained the Green Flag Community Award which recognises high quality green spaces which are managed by voluntary and community groups. Sefton Park, which opened in 1872, has undergone a £6m transformation in recent years to recapture and reinterpret the features which made the park design so ground-breaking at the time. Its restoration involved the complete refurbishment of existing

watercourses, renovation of rockeries, a new play area and extensive planting. Many of the landmark features were also restored, including statues and the Eros fountain. The £3m restoration of the Palm House was completed in 2001. It is managed by the Sefton Palm House Preservation Trust. Councillor Tim Moore, said: “This is a wonderful achievement for the city with 18 parks and gardens being able to fly the Green Flag. “But, of course, it is particularly pleasing that the historical importance of Sefton Park has been officially recognised as has the community involvement with the Palm House. Sefton Park really is a jewel in our crown and is not just a magnificent park for Liverpool but it is regarded as a national treasure. “We are very proud of our parks and green spaces and I hope these awards will encourage even more people to visit them.”

A

ctor, poet, writer and DJ CRAIG CHARLES is a a very busy man who took time out of his hectic schedule to chat to us about his forthcoming DJ set at Liverpool Fashion week next month. What are you looking forward to the most about liverpool Fashion Week? I like clothes, I like to look snappy and I like well made clothes so I will be checking out all the new styles on the catwalk. But if I am perfectly honest, the thing I am looking forward to the most is my gig. I am very selfish and I love Djings and playing my music. I love my music, I love the hip vivbe and it goes really well with the fashion element. I can’t wait for people to dance to what I play. Did you think Red Dwarf would ever become the cult status that it has achieved? Never. We thought it was a quaint little BBC comedy that we’re do a series or two and then move on. I can’t believe it was 25 years ago! Last week I was at a Red Dwarf Convention and there were 10- and 11 year old kids living Red Dwarf and I was thinking, :”You weren’t even born when I was in it.”Clearly the mums and dads have passed on their love of the programme. Tell us about the news series of Red Dwarf. It’s going to relight the fire. We’re filming six half hour episodes, it will be the same costumes and some new ones. Each episode will be a stand alone with their own story rather than a continuation of stories through the series. We’ll be travelling through space having a laugh.

was groundbreaking stuff. And I have to pinch myself when I think I am in Corrie, to be in part of a national institution. I am incredibly lucky, I know that, I love my job and my hobby of Djing, I love everything, my house, my kids and my lovely wife. I am a very lucky man. Do you want your children to follow in your footsteps? I will encourage my children to be whatever they want to be. My son is a brilliant musician, he is 23 and brilliant . He is writing his first album now. My two daughters are very academic… I just want them to be happy. What is it like to be on the set of Coronation Street. Not a day goes by when I am not set and I have to say to myself,“I’m in Corrie.” This is very special and I have made a lot of friend, in particular Simon Gregson is my best mate. Corrie is something I watched as a kid, I never dreamt that I would actually be in it. Do you hang out with the cast? Yes we are all very close and it’s easier to go out as a crowd and get gawped out collectively. Then if someone gets drunk and falls over your snapped together and you help each other out,

What are you working on now? I fell very luck to be working. I’ve got Corrie, Red Dwarf and I am Djing every weekend. I’m trying to get sacked but no one will let me go. But I appreciate it, I really do. I’ve been working a long time, I started in TV when I was 17 and I’m 47 now. That’s 30 years of being on TV and still going, I am very lucky. Some people don’t last a series. Do you like being recognised on the street? It’s mixed blessings really. Its’ nice for people to come up and chat to you but then mobile phone cameras are the bane of my life. I hate it when I am having diner in a restaurant with my wife and I turn round and people are taking pictures. I hate that. Would you ever star in a reality TV show? Never. I am an actor and I have trained for this. It is another bain of my life when someone goes on a reality TV show and the next minute they have apart in Eastenders or something. You just need to goon TV for five minutes, humiliate yourself and get a series.

8

What is your proudest achievement? My three children without a doubt. I am proud of lots of things though, I am proud of the work I do, I like doing the stuff I am doing, I like the programmes I made such as Robot Wars, that

How is our autobiography coming along? Well I have written it but it’s not been published. My agent says I can’t because it is too hardcore and rock the boat. It’s something to put out later when everyone’s dead. What’s the best advice you have been given? My dad said,“Live on your potential before your 30 and live on your achievement afterwards.” It gives you good scope to make mistakes and learn from them. What are your plans for the future? Well I am doing the festival circuit with my music, I am doing a lot on the radio- I love the radio- I am doing a Craig Charles no sleep til breakfast 12 hour gig, then I leave Corrie in a huge storyline, go and film Red Dwarf and come back to Corrie.

What do you spend your money on? I don’t spend my money, my wife does! She m buys most of my clothes. To be honest my biggest expense are the kids school fees. They go to a very good school.

Anything else we should know about? I have written some stories called Scary Fairy for children, it’s nursery rhythms with snot, blood and gore all told by little fairies. I am just getting it illustrated at the moment and in talks with a TV company to get it made into a cartoon series.

Butterfly brings fashionable plus size clothing online to the british high street...

ntrepreneur BETH LEGGATTsaw a gap in the market for fashionable clothes for the larger women - and has launched an online store. Her collections are sourced from all over the world and can be see on the catwalk at Liverpool Fashion Week next month.

Beth, 27 from Bootle, Merseyside trained in Visual Merchandising and worked for Lewis'. she said, " I loved it at Lewis', I have always had an eye for fashion and loved sorting the clothes. I have a lot of people in my family who are plus sizes and they were always moaning saying how they loved an item of clothing but it wouldn't be in their size. "Except for Evans there is nothing on the high street for these women. So I did my research and bought stock from all over the world." Beth eventually plans to design her own styles, "I have lots of ideas, " she says, " There is so much scope for expansion of my business. I will draw the designs and commission and dressmaker as there are loads in Liverpool." I want to keep it all local, that's very important to me." Beth studied at Crosby High School and Hugh Baird College before landing a job in retail and she hasn't looked back since. A size 14 herself, she describes her styles as wacky." I like to mix things up," she explains, " I don't do high fashion labels as they don't seem to fit me right and are always made for people with small boobs, I find. So I shop on the high street and accessorize. I love putting different looks together."

Looking forward to her debut catwalk appearance at Liverpool Fashion Week, Beth says, "I am so excited. There's a huge buzz around the event and I can't wait. I am the first independent retailer in the region for women with proper curves and I am the first boutique in Liverpool to provide this service. Liverpool Fashion Week is fantastic for championing proper sized women. The average size in the UK is a 16 and if you go into a shop, all the 14s and 16s are sold out first. There's a reason for that." "I live and breathe fashion, I love it. I can't wait to start work on my own designs." She added, "I hate the phrase plus size". My boutique is for women with natural curves Normal sized women really. Some bigger women don't have the confidence to go shopping on the high street but they can browse my store with ease."

Glamour with Jennie Freedland

Head of Make up for, Liverpool Fashion Week and Lifestyle Monthly’s Beauty Editor

I

t's all go ready for the fabulousness of Liverpool Fashion Week and with A/W 2011 just around the corner (yes I know - sshhh!) we all need to know what to wear on our faces and how to follow the trends (well we already know what's going in the wardrobe), so this month I've decided to showcase some charts of what you can expect down the catwalk at fashion week with the help of Victoria Hooker of ProChart......... There has long been an absence of make-up from the last couple of seasons, however this year it's back with a bang with full on glamour that's got a twist. Nods are given to the siren like '40's, swinging '60's, jewel tones and dominatrix, there is a clear set of rules that makes it easy with double acts. THE trend to follow is a grown up, contemporary Marlene Dietrich inspired look with dewy skin, no eye liner - instead soft brown and golds blended away towards the brows with pared down lashes and a glossy cherry red lip that is pure 2011.......complete with matching nails as seen at Gucci, DVF and Ungaro. Chanel, Fendi and Zac Posen showed metallic eyes with layers of iridescent pigment using cream formulations so no messy fall outthink holographic and texture, flawless skin with lips being kept semi-matt as this is a lip AND eye look. AT Cavalli, D&G, and PPQ the '60's hit town with a winged glossy eye, nude lips and doe eyed lashes - think Leighton Meester or Reece Witherspoon. Brows were well and truly back on the scene with a squared off bold, almost boyish look seen at Burberry, Michael Kors and Prada - Keep your skin minimal with this look to stay on trend. And for those of us that thought we were all on trend, well it appears we've been wearing our blusher in the wrong place....... Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs showed us how to amend this however - blush is now worn low on the cheek to the jawline giving a more natural and womanly flush - top tip.... use a cream texture for a seamless finish. Also this month I was lucky enough to attend the Jacques Townhouse Launch and meet the so gorgeous Keisha Buchanon who is the face of Jacques cider. This is the first year in Liverpool, being already established in London. For those not in the know, the Townhouse is a girlie haven that's open for 10 days a year and you can have your make-up, hair, nails done; dress up and have your photo taken or even have a drink in the bar complete with lush cupcakes. You are treated to the most amazing of experiences with Mr. Flowers (the head butler) meeting you upon arrival and presenting you with the key to the bar!! Certainly look out for it next year as by the time we go to print it will unfortunately have finished, though I for one wish it would stay all year long! This is just a taste of what to expect to see on the catwalk so don't forget your tickets. For any further information on these or any other looks please email me (dibelleza@yahoo.co.uk) or Facebook me (Jennie MUA Freedland).

Celebrity chef Marco Pierre White is set to return to Liverpool Food and Drink Festival on September 3rd and 4th. Back in 2009, Michelin star-winning White charmed more than 30,000 visitors by signing autographs and copies of his books, speaking to local chefs and sampling an array of different cuisines. Marco has also recently teamed up with family brewery JW Lees to launch a new beer brand called the Governor, which Liverpool Food and Drink Festival visitors will be able to try while they make their way around the festival site at Sefton Park. His Lancashire based restaurant, The Swan Inn, will also be exhibiting. He said: “The last time I attended Liverpool Food and Drink Festival, everyone was so welcoming and the food and drink on offer was to an extremely high standard. I liked the fact that some people who may not have the opportunity to go to some of the restaurants on a regular basis, were able to head to Sefton Park and try the food that they serve. “I’m delighted to be attending once again and the great thing about events like this is that they inspire people to cook and to eat well.” Marco will join a host of top television chefs at the event, now in its fourth year, including MasterChef’s John Torode and Birkenhead born star Simon Rimmer, who will both be demonstrating their culinary skills in the festival’s ever-popular Celebrity Chef Theatre.

As part of Liverpool Food & Drink Festival, more than 400 people will descend to Sefton Park to enjoy a selection of German beers, traditional German food including Schnitzel, Goulasch and Frikadellen, and entertainment in the form of a Bavarlan-style Oompah band, which will play a selection of foot stomping, thigh slapping German tunes.

The menu included familiar Mexican dishes such as burritos and fajitas and the like – however Yvonne and I opted for something a little different. For main I had a medium rare T-bone steak, served with fries mixed vegetables and a beautiful garlic mayonnaise. Savina’s unique marinade really brings the meat to this steak alive. ….. thank god I’d starved myself all day. Yvonne opted for grilled prawn and chorizo skewers, which were both succulent and very tasty – these were served with salad and option of rice, potatoes or chips. We also shared a chicken nacho supreme, the flavours of the guacamole, sour cream and grilled chicken topped with cheese were exquisite. Once again, we had eaten so much we could only share a pudding; we opted for a quebradazo! A home-made desert; white and milk chocolate wrapped in a sweet tortilla, then baked and served hot with vanilla ice cream all washed down with an eclipse coffee.

Nestled amid some of the best restaurants in the city serving food from around the globe, Savina Mexican Restaurant on Duke Street is a real asset to this proliferate area of Liverpool. I was joined by my wife Yvonne and daughter Nancy. On arrival, you could tell that we were in for stylish and sophisticated delight unlike the “Tex-Mex” style experience you would have usually associated with Mexican eateries. We were greeted by head waiter Matty, who served us a selection of drinks from the tastefully decorated minimalist bar and offered us the menu with a choice of starters. Shortly after ordering, our starters were served. RED HOT WORLD BUFFET LIVERPOOL ONE www.redhot-worldbuffet.com Liverpool One - 0151 707 9688

Y

ou will find Red Hot World Buffet upstairs in Liverpool One, make sure your wearing expandable pants and you have finished all your shopping before you head for something to eat here, it’s an all you can eat buffet with dishes- as promised- from all over the world, ranging from Japanese, Chinese, Cajun, Tex Mex, Italian, Thai, Indian as well as English, you certainly wont be moving about much for at least the next 24 hours after dining here.

There's a long meandering bar which acts as the buffet and, as the name of the place suggests, it’s organised by country. Imagine the all you can eat buffets that are available in Las Vegas and you won’t be far wrong. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality, selection, and abundance of food. Each station has a dedicated chef waiting to make you a fresh dish on demand from

noodles to pasta to tandoori with freshly backed pita, so even the pickiest of picky eaters won’t have much to complain about. Finally it was time for dessert, I didn’t expect much, but oh boy was I wrong. I stood in awe as I took in the cornucopia of sweet sugary desserts. There was shelf upon backlight shelf of tiny individual delights to choose from, I felt as if I had won the golden ticket tour of Wonka’s chocolate factory. The only problem here is what to choose, from dainty cheese cakes to oozing tiramisu to bubblegum flavoured ice cream covered in hot chocolate sauce, the visit was worth this station alone, and defiantely should not be missed!

Booking is strongly recommended here as it is very popular at all times with hungry revelers queuing out the door, and at £13 per head- who can blame them! 23

CELEBRITY CHEF AIDEN BYRNE

said he is “coming home” with the launch of his third restaurant, The British Grill. By Joy Lewis

T

he Kirkby-born chef, who made his name as head chef at the Dorchester Grill, who incidentally at the tender age of 22 was the youngest chef to win the Michelin Star, has teamed up with Macdonald Hotels to launch his latest venture at the newly refurbished Craxton Wood Hotel. by Joy Lewis

I MANAGED TO CATCH UP WITH HIM ON HIS WAY INTO WORK;

24

Where did your interest in cooking stem from? I was really fortunate to fall in love with cooking while I was at school and it stuck with me ever since – that was a long time ago now mind! What made you choose Craxton Wood for your latest venture and why a British Grill? Craxton Wood is a bit of a sleeping giant, it was once "the" place to come. And I believe there is no reason why it shouldn't get back there. The reasoning for choosing a British Grill is because the phrase "Grill" appeals to a bigger market and it is the larger market that we are targeting, we think that good food should be available for everyone, all purses. What is it about The British Grill that makes you proud to put your name to it? That ones easy, the restaurant was designed by my lovely wife and I, so the style and the food has really got our stamp on it. The British Grill has all the true classics that customers recognise and feel comfortable with. If our customers feel comfortable and happy, we feel happy, and everyone’s a winner! What’s the atmosphere like at the British Grill? Well, It’s inevitable that a hotel restaurant will have the feeling of being formal. However our job is to break down any feelings of pompousness and welcome people into the hotel/restaurant with open arms and make our customers feel at ease, but at the same time giving them the best service we physically can, making each guest feel the most important in the room. I have been told you use a special grill? Yes, it’s called the Josper Grill, which is basically an indoor BBQ, that needs stoking up with fresh coals all day long. The flavour that it gives the British Beef and the whole stuffed sea bass can not be compared to food that has been cooked conventionally in an oven. What type of food can the diners expect? Of course, like with all of our restaurants, regionality is very important to us, we rely on local customers so it‘s only right that we support local businesses. The choice of foods varies quite a lot, but in a nut shell we are cooking Great British dishes the way they should be cooked, with pride and dignity. You are famous for British Classics made with a twist, where do you get your inspiration from? My style of cooking has evolved from working with some of the best chefs in the country and earning a Michelin Star twice myself in the past (so I would say my back ground is purely fine dinning) but owning The Church Green and The Collingwood I have learned to listen what people actually want to eat, so my love and desire to cook British classics has stemmed from this really. What is it about the British Grill that will make it stand out? Craxton Wood was once a serious family gathering and dining destination and that is something that I am working so hard to re-establish. We are not trying to reinvent the wheel here, we are simply trying to cook the dishes that people want but cook them correctly.

GIVE YOR BODY A HEALTH MOT THIS AUTUMN WITH SOME SUPER CITRUS RECIPES GRAPEFRUIT - A DAY TRIAL REVEALS STRIKING RESULTS Eating one grapefruit every day for as little as two weeks can noticeably improve appearance and overall vitality, according to a new trial carried out in the UK. The study, commissioned by the South African Citrus Growers Association, asked 65 women to rate aspects of their appearance and overall wellbeing - including skin, hair and weight, concentration and energy levels – before and after incorporating one grapefruit into their food intake each day for a fortnight.

SOUTH AFRICAN GRAPEFRUIT

recipe by Sophie Michell Chef Sophie Michell has developed a selection of deliciously refreshing recipes – all featuring South African grapefruits. Whether your planning a picnic or hosting a dinner party, these recipes are sure to impress. South African grapefruits are in season from May through to October. Look out for varieties such as Marsh, Rosé and Star Ruby – which don’t require extra sugar as they are naturally sweeter than other varieties.

Chef and author Sophie Michell took part in the South African Grapefruit Challenge*, and said:“Having done it myself, I’m not surprised to see that the majority of panel found that eating a grapefruit every day had a beneficial effect on how healthy and attractive they felt. “Grapefruit is no longer regarded a 1970s bitter fruit, that needs sugar adding.Modern varieties, particularly the red Star Ruby, are naturally sweet, and still taste great either fresh or as an ingredient. These results are another great reason for people to eat this delicious fruit.” For more information and results from this study – and to see verbatim quotes from the people who took part in this study, please visit: www.sagrapfruitchallenge.com

RICK VAUGHN ON WHAT’S HOT & NOT FOR SEPTEMBER

HOT

Semi-permanent makeup Not that I’m an expert with this in any way, but I’m informed by our Nicole that no reputable young lady would be seen out and about without wearing a little bit of this. So check it out for yourself and contact Nicole at the Birkdale Clinic.

TOWIE This month it’s back for a third season and I cannot wait. There is talk of it hitting our screens 48 weeks a year - the more the merrier I say. Where would we all be without our fix of Essex? You’ve just got to love the carry on and the capers it actually makes our lives look quite normal in comparison.

Envi This has without doubt become Liverpool’s premier Saturday night out with Radio City 96.7 and on Saturday September the 3rd Alexis Jordan sings all her hits live on stage. Join the queues on Fleet Street as it really is chock-ablock every week.

Dark Nights Admittedly you could probably put the amount of great days we’ve had this summer on the back of a postage stamp, however September is here now, and the dark nights will start rolling in sooner rather than later. The summer ship has definitely sailed.

Reunions Is it just me, or do we seem to have more and more of these old school reunion nights cropping up everywhere? I love to reminisce just as much as the next person; however the key to a great old school reunion is that they don’t happen very often.

Exchange Rates

NOT

I never quite realised how low the Euro was until a recent excursion in Spain in which I found out it is near enough pound for Euro which means everything is ridiculously expensive. I can remember the days when the Euro was 1.50 to the Pound…Bring back those days!

I hate to say it, and I know it’s going to make me sound really old, but hasn’t this year flown by? It’s September already - the kids have gone back to school and the X-Factor has started. Before you know it, we’ll all be voting for the Christmas number one. I mentioned it above in my hot section but I really do mean it: Saturday nights with Radio City 96.7 at Envi is just the biggest Saturday in the North West. It’s not one of those really cool hangouts but it’s a cracking night out where you’re probably going to leave with your mascara running down your face and if you’re a bloke, I would imagine you’ll be all hot and bothered. To top it all off, the brilliant Alexis Jordan will be singing live there on September 3rd. Bring it on. My training and healthy eating plan (as my trainer likes to call it) continues with Chris Brown and the Get Fit Academy, and I just hope that it is working – no pain no gain and all that! To be honest with you I don’t really notice any difference day by day and it often takes some positive words from someone to keep the enthusiasm up after years of flogging my guts out. But it’s as I always say, if I can do it anyone can, and it’s never too late to start.

Anyway, let me get off the soapbox, other things I’m really looking forward to this month include Jimmy Carr and Echo and the Bunnymen playing the Philharmonic, there’s another big race day in Chester and my favourite will be the Liverpool Food and Drink Festival which returns for two days in Sefton Park. I attended this last year, I just think its amazing how much food plays a massive part in our lives, whether we’re eating it, cooking it, or just talking about it. Last year, the weather was good and it was a great day out, fingers crossed this year it will be bigger and better - weather permitting. Make sure you catch me next month when I’ll be talking about my holiday to Las Vegas and some of the gigs I have planned and back here we can expect to be talking about the likes of Stephen Merchant, Snoop Dogg, Rihanna and Alan Carr as they all come to town in October. And I’ll be hosting the final night of Liverpool Fashion Week. That’s it for this month, stay safe and skinny and don’t forget to catch me weekdays on Radio City 96.7 from 10am.

DJ J DALY

JO BIRCHALL

SPINS A SUCCESS STORY

S

eventeen-year-old James Daly from the Wirral has been recognised as one of the UK’s top new musical talents, following great success when he travelled to Ibiza to compete in the British Student DJ championships this summer. James made it to the finals as one of five acts who performed at the island’s popular venue, Kanye Beach on San Antonio bay.James, aka ‘DJ J Daly’, from Bebington, completed an NCFE Level 2 Performance Skills qualification in Liverpool last year and credits the course for giving him the confidence to pursue his DJ career.

Jo Birchall’s debut single,“Wonderful”, released last month, is a life affirming anthem to brighten up the hearts and the minds of all who hear it.. It is elegantly performed and is a celebratory track about falling in love. It is typical of her debut album, ‘Something to Say’, and showcases a down to earth artist with star quality who knows when to hold back and when to let her emotions come to the fore. With her new album Jo Birchall is putting the finishing piece to a jigsaw that she has been assembling for the last five years. Having originally recorded an album for Decca in the middle of the decade, things seemed to be going well. She toured with Westlife and performed on Children in Need, all the while being mentored by Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy whose production company she was signed to.Then unfortunatel Decca merged companies leaving her with an album and no label. Take That reunited and changed Gary’s priorities. Closer to home as well, tragedy struck with both her parents being diagnosed with cancer. While her father sadly passed away, her mother eventually recovered. Picking herself up and more intent that ever to seize the day, Jo moved to London and a chance meeting in the street led her to meeting two men who used to run Warner music. They are her management, Nick Philips and Adam Hollywood for Smile EntertainmentAnd the rest, they say, is history. ‘Something to Say’is the long overdue emergence of an artist who performs from the heart and is loving every moment, eagerly awaiting what is around the corner. X

Since his studies, James has been actively pursuing his career and enjoyed soaking up the sun in Ibiza where he turned up the heat against 25 hopefuls in the competition. James said:“I was thrilled to take part in the competition. To enter I supplied a demo of my music and was delighted to find out I’d been shortlisted. I met some amazing DJs and was over the moon to make it to the final. “The experience and exposure has enabled me to show off my skills and has boosted my confidence. It was fantastic to be able to perform in front of large crowds and as a result of the competition I have made some great contacts.“I developed a passion for DJing when I was 13 after discovering the American artist, Moby, who I really admire. I bought his album and became hooked on his music, I love that it is multi-genred and he hasn’t pigeon holed himself into one particular style of music. “The NCFE Performance Skills qualification really helped me on my way. I studied for one day each week and the experience was fantastic, it boosted my ambition and showed me what I wanted to do for a career.”James is looking forward to building on his DJ skills and his love of the music industry by producing his own music and flexing his entrepreneurial skills as he looks to start his own record label. David Grailey, Chief Executive at NCFE, said:“James is a shining example of how vocational qualifications can help to further develop the skills of learners and give them the best possible start to their future. “Many young people may find that traditional A-Level qualifications just aren’t for them and prefer the more ‘hands on’ vocational approach. By recognising that every person is different, we can ensure that they each achieve their potential in education and the workplace with relevant qualifications. “Vocational learning can help learners advance and select a career pathway as well as provide them with the necessary requirements and confidence they need to reach their goals. “James’ story demonstrates what vocational learners can achieve with a good knowledge, the right skills and the desire to succeed. We’re delighted he did so well in the competition.” 41

NEW SEASON, NEW STADIUM

I

f you live in the city or consider yourself a Scouser then chances are your chief sporting interest is football. Liverpudlians are, famously, aficionados of the beautiful game and many don’t see past Anfield or Goodison for their action. Yet nearby and sometimes overlooked is a whole world of Rugby League, the most physically demanding contact sport there is. It is played and televised across the globe but the game in England is dominated by teams from towns and cities along the M62 corridor and currently by an axis of three teams from the north west: St Helens, Wigan and Warrington.

Liverpool. In 1780 the 12th Lord Derby gave his name to a brand new horserace in Epsom and a descendant would go on to give the same name to the Rugby League thriller. The current Lord Derby is a keen supporter of the club and often goes to the games. And his family’s historic seat, Knowsley Hall, is involved too, with Knowsley Safari Park a club sponsor.

This year sees Liverpool’s near neighbour St Helens playing home matches at The Halton Stadium, home of Widnes, while a fabulous new ground is constructed in time for the 2012 season. St Helens has a long and glorious history but 2012 is a new beginning for them in a 21st century stadium worthy of a great club. The 18,000 capacity creation – now nearing completion on time and on budget - will provide fans with a brilliant spectator experience as well as becoming a great resource on non-match days for businesses and others to use for events of all shapes and sizes, from parties to conferences in the state-of-the-art surrounds of an iconic new venue. The famous red vee on the team’s white strip will remain, but for the coming season Saints will be boasting a new shirt sponsor in international Wirral brand Typhoo Tea. Family Entertainment

Stadium entertainment has been a mainstay of Rugby League for a long time, some of it appropriated from US sports and some of it appropriated by them: cheerleaders, mascots and pumping music are standard. And teams will often run out in a sea of dry ice. It’s stirring stuff, even for the neutral.

Despite its deserved reputation for toughness, Rugby League players are better behaved than in many other team sports. The complaints levelled at sometimes unsporting footballers are rarely levelled at the stars of League. Perhaps because of this it attracts a higher percentage of family fans than football. The atmosphere at Rugby League matches is often electric. Consider this: the classic fixture, Saints vs Wigan, is the original officially sanctioned Derby. Forget Everton vs

And pricing is part of it too: Saints season tickets are now available for 2012 and family season tickets work out at less than £5 per person per game while for juniors it’s less than £2 per game and free for under 5s. Season ticket renewal prices are frozen for 2012 and 2013 and new purchases made before November 30 cost just £200 for adults. Buy season tickets direct from the Saints Town Centre Superstore, by calling 01744 455 052 or visiting HYPERLINK "http://www.saintssuperstore.com"www.saintssuperstore.com. CALLING LIVERPOOL COMMUNITIES The Run Liverpool Marathon needs he RunLiverpool Marathon takes place in the Liverpool City Region on Sunday October 9.

T

Attracting local runners and many as far afield as New York, Dubai and Australia, the event is all set to have a massive international focus with an estimated 30,000+ participants and their supporters descending on the city for marathon weekend. The 2011 marathon, organised by RunLiverpool, will be the first to be held in the city in over 20 years and is set to be a high-profile annual event in Liverpool’s sporting calendar, in the lead up to the 2012 Olympics. For runners wishing to enter this year’s race, charity places are still open and RunLiverpool are reporting that interest in the event has been beyond expectation - announcing that a number of celebrities have also been keen to get involved, with many acting as ambassadors, as well as backing their own chosen charities. Famous faces in the field of 12,000 runners will include 400m British record holder Iwan Thomas, and Paul O’Neill, British Touring Cars driver. Television celebrities include Wirral actress Suzanne Collins who is supporting Diabetes UK, and presenter Craig Phillips who will run for The Alzheimer’s Society. Speaking about his involvement with the event, Craig Phillips commented: “It is fantastic that Liverpool finally has its own marathon. I will be pulling my running shoes out of the back of my wardrobe to take part in this exciting event, along with my girlfriend Laura and sister Beverly. The last marathon I took part in was in London, ten years ago, and I made the unfortunate mistake of not training. Some very sore muscles later, I learnt my lesson, and will make sure I am fully prepared for the RunLiverpool Marathon in October.” The 26.2-mile RunLiverpool Marathon route has been designed specifically to take in some of the best-known sights on both sides of the Mersey.

Starting in Birkenhead Park - New Brighton, Liverpool Docks, Queensway Tunnel, Princes Park and Sefton Park are just some of the locations participants will pass whilst running the marathon course, along with the captivating view between six and nine miles where runners can fully appreciate the magnitude of the world famous Liverpool skyline. The race finishes in the shadow of the ‘Three Graces’ on the city’s Pier Head. To make the race a success, organisers are inviting Liverpool communities to get involved with the event and join in the fun. Speaking about the event, Race Director Alan Rothwell explained: “ Marathon Day will have a real festival atmosphere and we anticipate that the streets will be packed with the public cheering the runners on at all stages of the course. Spectators are massively important to the race and runners really appreciate being cheered on – it’s a real spine-tingler and a must to help runners get to the finish line. We want to bring the people of Liverpool out in force!! “It would be fantastic if those people who actually live on the route would decorate their gardens for the day to make it a real spectacle. Maybe children could create home-made banners or why not throw a garden party with friends and family and watch the world run by!” There will also be designated points on the route where local community groups can have the opportunity to perform to runners and spectators. Alan continues: “We’re keen to work with Liverpool groups who would like to showcase their talents on the route. These could include music acts, dance groups, cheerleaders or sports clubs. We’re happy to hear from anyone who would like to perform and the more the merrier - the Marathon route covers over 26 miles, which has to be the biggest stage in the world! ” If you’d like further information on how you can get involved in the RunLiverpool Marathon or to take part and run for a chosen charity, please contact the RunLiverpool team on 0151 236 8432 or visit www.runliverpoolmarathon.co.uk

From 7-11 September the Echo Arena will be welcoming Batman Live – a brand new production that has opened in the UK before heading off to Europe & the States. I was lucky enough to catch a rehearsal show last month and it looks amazing! Walking into the Arena, the audience will be greeted with a 3D Gotham City landscape and sounds that set the scene. Full of colour, thrills & spills, the acrobatics and production are spectacular and the show features all of Batman’s arch nemeses which will certainly be a hit with all Batman fans! month on 6 October – can you believe that his career spans 19 years? With that back catalogue behind him I expect that there will be some stomping favourites to hear, including recent track Sweat which at the last count had sold nearly 500,000 copies in the UK. Support comes from Chipmunk so this promises to be one the top shows of the autumn calendar! On a sporting note, the Echo Arena is hosting the 2011 British Judo World Cup for Men which takes place on 1-2 October – we’re delighted to welcome the event to Liverpool for the first time and it adds real depth to our sporting program of events. With ranking points for Olympic qualification up for grabs the guys will be looking to benefit from the support of a vocal home crowd, so make sure you come down to support! I can’t end without mentioning how pleased we were to welcome to the Echo Arena one of music’s biggest living legends – a big thanks to Dolly Parton for performing in Liverpool!

He is also fronting “Face The Mic” in association with Help For Hero’s, this is a national talent search show taking place in hotels across the UK, He said, “Face The Mic is very special, It really is mind blowing how much talent is out there, If anyone wants to get involved, search Face The Mic on Facebook because we will be heading to a town near you.” So what does the future hold for the self-confessed Mr Entertainment? “I’ve got plenty in the pipeline, a guest spot in a new movie called Rough & Ready. With regards to Blackpool, we’re hoping to bring back the legendary Miss Blackpool Show and The Bird Man Competition (where people climb up the pier scaffolding and throw themselves off and try to fly) It’s all good fun, although please don’t try it anywhere else.” 54
