The site is located at Kuala Koh, Gua Musang. It is also the northern entrance to the Kelantan national park. Aside from the vast richness in flora and fauna species, the national park is also home to the indigenous people, or also debuted as the original people. Amongst these group, are a small tribe of the Negrito family known as the Bateq. The tribal community in Kelantan is known to be the smallest group that is threatened by extinction.

Kuala Koh is near to Sungai Lebir within the Kelantan National Park. The site is near to the Aring 10 which is the FELDA village along the Sungai Lebir . Aring 10 is focused on Oil Palm Plantation.

The site is located at the center of Forest, thus some of the settlements that lived by Bateq Tribe could only going by water transport such as small boat through the river .
The development of basic amenities of this area is slow because of the geographical location.

From the map and the study of the Bateq tribe , river is very important for the Bateq people . They normally moves near to the river . The river that chosen by the Bateq tribe is small because the less pollutions in the smaller river compared with the bigger river.
The picture shows the location of Bateq tribe settlements.
River is the important sources of water for the bateq people . They drink water from river , eat fish from river and move from a point to another place by river .

B E L I E F They believe in animism, therefore they respect and protect the forests and river. They walk bare foots in forests .

HUNTER GATHER
It is a moral obligation for Batek to share food they have acquired. Normally the person who harvests the food item will first give to their immediate family, then their extended family and finally the rest of the camp. If everyone is giving to everyone else, a family who is down on their luck will still have food to eat, although not as much as if they harvested it themselves. The Batek or Bateq people are an indigenous Orang Asli people (numbering about 1,519 in 2000)belonging to the Semang group, who live in the rainforest of peninsular Malaysia.
As a result of encroachment, they now primarily inhabit the Taman Negara National Park. The Batek are nomadic hunters and gatherers, so the exact location of their settlements change within the general confines of the area that they inhabit.
F U N E R A L Body was neither buried nor cremated but left inside a shelter which is then placed on top of a tree, about 40 metres above the ground, deep in the jungle. After some years, we will return to the place to see if the skeletal remains are in the shelter or have fallen to the ground. If they have fallen, then the departed person had committed a lot of sins.

In May of 2019 , there are 16 Bateq villagers died because of the “unknown illness ” caused by the unclean water in Lebir River . Water in River is polluted by the illegal manganese mining site nearby the river .

G A R B A G E They experiences a problem of contaminated river water, being polluted by the garbage from the nearby Malay housing areas.
DEFORESTATION Deforestation causes soil erosion into the river . It polluted the river .
According to the study of (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia) UKM , the water in the river is found contaminated with metals metals, arsenic and chemicals from the fertilisers . Speaking at a press conference at Gua Musang hospital, the health minister, Dzulkefly Ahmad, did not rule out environmental poisoning. “There is a manganese mine in the area, and lung disease could be one of the illnesses caused by mining,” he said. Malaysia’s deputy prime minister, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, said the government would take “stern action” if it were discovered the tribe had been poisoned. Dr Steven Chow, leader of the Federation of Private Medical Practitioners’ Associations Malaysia, said he had visited the Batek tribe in Kuala Koh in April and had found them in a state of neglect, suffering from gastrointestinal and fungal skin infections and without a supply of clean running water.

With many trees in the forests
In the past , the Bateq village lived in the forest and near to the river. Their lives in the forest are peaceful and full of happiness .Bateq people lives freely in the forests. The rivers in the forest are clean and giving bateq people many sources of living for example , water and foods. The forests are full of trees and as the important source of Bateq tribe.

/ Other programs
DESIGN RESPONSE The masterplan is divided into 3 different zones : tourist’s spot , marketplace / other programs and Bateq’s facilities . Each node of the activities are located with certain range of planning distance to ensure the node of areas are reachable in a reasonable distances. The patterns and languages of the conceptual masterplan are located along the river to link the settlements that along the river .
ZONING The zoning of the area is from public to semi public to private . The public areas are more to the tourist’s spot and others zone that aimed to attract the public to the site .
The semi- public areas as the Bateq’s facilities that helps to support and improve the Bateq ‘s living . The private area is the main living area as the accommodation of the Bateq Tribe community .
WATER TRANSPORT CIRCULATION The water transport circulation are along the river and the jetty is located at certain distance along the Sungai Lebir.
CIRCULATION The vehicular circulation is the main road from the zone A (Bateq ‘s village) and zone B (National Park’s office ). The pedestrian circulation is the proposed link bridge to link the opposite areas along the Sungai Lebir.

Marketplace / Flaoting marketplace The marketplace is to encourage exploration of public to Bateq tribe community in order to break the barrier between them and build the connection through the trading activities like barter trading . For example, throughout the exchange activity of barter trading, Bateq villagers can exchange their products like traditional medicine with the other villagers ‘s products like rice and they could know more about the living condition and the intelligence of Bateq tribe. What they could exchange are not only items and products , it is also culture . Necklace & traditional medicine
Ipoh Tree Seedlings Tower Ipoh tree is the special tree for the Bateq tribe . The sap from ipoh tree is used for the poison for hunting and the tree itself is used to build the structure that hanging the death body for Bateq’s funeral ceremony . Therefore, Ipoh tree seedling tower in this project is to represent the shaman ’area that in Bateq settlement and to memorial the death of lives from the Plague incident happened in May 2019. SCHOOL
/
NLÉ Unpredictable climate changes along the world's most vulnerable coastal communities, have produced some fascinating design solutions that test the resiliency of architectural possibilities and the need for adaptation that will produce these changes. The Makoko Floating School and the total planned projects makes use of local materials and resources to produce architecture that applies to the needs of people and reflects the culture of the community. Wood is used as the main material as the structure, support and finishing for the completed school. The overall composition of the design is a triangular A-Frame section.
HOW DOES IT FLOAT? The completed structure rests on a base of typical plastic barrels. This simple solution reflects a reuse of available materials that can provide multiple uses. The barrels at the periphery can be used to store excess rainwater from the catchment system.

The idea of floating marketplace give the flexibility of the marketplace and it can adapt to the flooding condition that happens during raining season . The Bateq villagers (technique taught by local villager )can also teach and bring the visitors experience the fishing activity along the Lebir River .

The accommodation is designed and follow the topography . A building block of the accommodation consists of four unit of room (2 twin sharing units – ground floor & 2 couple unit at first floor )with a small common living zone at the second floor .

The accommodation with the common living area and common kitchen that is designed more open to experience the living condition of Bateq community in reality . Bateq tribe community carries out activities at the center and with the sharing culture . This area is also open for the public to promote the “sharing ” culture .

VENTILATION
FACADE The façade design allow the air ventilation into the space and the building design in the more open space . It also allows partial natural light penetrate in to brighten the space and reduce the use of artificial light during the daytime .

R O O F The use of the glass roof allow the penetration of the sunlight to the interior space. It save the cost in providing the lighting . The site with the tall trees create the shadows to the space and diffuse the strong light to more soft light . The visible of glass roof gives the seamless feelings to the forest.

PLATFROM This floating raft platform could adapt to the flooding condition and the rise of the river water level during the raining season period .

Ipoh Tree Seedlings Tower with 5 planter box and ipoh tree seedlings . The 5 ipoh trees in the planter box keep growing as the shading for the area.
The floating raft platform allows the activities to be carried out without affect by flooding condition.

The canopy roof is maneuver between the trees trunk to avoid cut off trees. The use of materials of the canopy roof is more light weight and the canopy is made by metal wire that allow the sunlight and rainwater penetration .
