01 The Crossing of Bateq’s Life ... ...

The project of the design studio 6 consists of 3 main projects : Project 1 : thematic research and visual manuscript Project 2 : Conceptual Masterplaning and Building Strategies Project 3 : Final Project ( The Crossing of Bateq’s Life)

Project 1: THEMATIC RESEARCH Theme 2 : Thnographic Sustenance & Societal Inclusion

The site is located at Kuala Koh, Gua Musang. It is also the northern entrance to the Kelantan national park. Aside from the vast richness in flora and fauna species, the national park is also home to the indigenous people, or also debuted as the original people. Amongst these group, are a small tribe of the Negrito family known as the Bateq.

Kuala Koh , Kelantan

The tribal community in Kelantan is known to be the smallest group that is threatened by extinction.

Bateq Tribe The Batek or Bateq people are an indigenous Orang Asli people (numbering about 1,519 in 2000) belonging to the Semang group, who live in the rainforest of peninsular Malaysia. As a result of encroachment, they now primarily inhabit the Taman Negara National Park. The Batek are nomadic hunters and gatherers, so the exact location of their settlements change within the general confines of the area that they inhabit.

DETAILS

In the past , the Bateq village lived in the forest and near to the river. Their lives in the forest are peaceful and full of happiness .Bateq people lives freely in the forests.

This model represents the current situation of the Bateq tribe .

The use of the technologies to solve environmental issues and bring back the green environment and improve the quality of life of the Bateq tribe.

The river water flow to the hydropower to generate electricity and to the water treatment area.

The rivers in the forest are clean and giving bateq people many sources of living for example , water and foods. The forests are full of trees and as the important source of Bateq tribe.

The river is polluted by the mining site, government developments , malay villages and oil palm plantation. The bateq villages are squeezed in the corner because of the deforestation in the forests.

The level of technology that implemented to the site should be suitable and acceptable by the Bateq tribe. The technologies implemented to enhance the quality of river water at the same time protect river and the environment in the forests.

Project 2 : CONCEPTUAL MASTERPLANING Conceptual Masterplaning trategies and Building rategies

“Link By River” The concept of masterplaning strategies is to create the linkage between others communities with the Bateq trribe community at the same time create the awareness to this neglected community . The linkage is created by the river network of Sungai Lebir at the site, therefore the planing is focued on the land nearby river .

DESIGN RESPONSE The masterplan is divided into 3 different zones : tourist’s spot , marketplace / other programs and Bateq’s facilities . Each node of the activities are located with certain range of planning distance to ensure the node of areas are reachable in a reasonable distances. The patterns and languages of the conceptual masterplan are located along the river to link the settlements that along the river . ZONIING The zoning of the area is from public to semi public to private . The public areas are more to the tourist’s spot and others zone that aimed to attract the public to the site . The semi- public areas as the Bateq’s facilities that helps to support and improve the Bateq ‘s living .The private area is the main living area as the accommodation of the Bateq Tribe community .

WATER TRANSPORT CIRCULATION The water transport circulation are along the river and the jetty is located at certain distance along the Sungai Lebir.

CIRCULATION The vehicular circulation is the main road from the zone A (Bateq ‘s village) and zone B (National Park’s office ). The pedestrian circulation is the proposed link bridge to link the opposite areas along the Sungai Lebir.

Bateq tribe community as the most neglected community in Malaysia. Therefore, this Project is aimed to increase the awareness of public to the Bateq tribe community through the exploration of aspects of the Bateq ’s culture with the programs of Barter Trading Marketplace + Ipoh Tree Seedlings Tower (Shaman)+ Cultural Learning Workshop. The Barter Trading Marketplace as one of the way to break the barrier between the Bateq and public . What they could exchange are not only items and products , it ’s also culture. Ipoh Tree Seedlings Tower represents the Shaman ’space that have in Bateq ’s settlement . Cultural Learning workshop is Workshop for Public is to explore the Bateq’s culture to the public like the art and craft and hunting technique from Bateq.

CK+M+S (Community Kitchen + Marketplace + Spaces)

The project of the design studio 5 consists of 3 main projects : Project 1 : Site Appreciation And Response (The Future Vision) Project 2 : Conceptual Masterplaning and Building Strategies Project 3 : Final Project ( CK+M+S =Community Kitchen + Marketplace + Spaces)

Project 1 : THE FUTURE VISION INSECURITY The first board shows the broken building and some historical buildings are destroyed during the explosion to express the sad and homeless feeling. The cannon is facing in and out represent the threat is from the internal of this country like civil war that happened before and the less canon is facing out that represent less threat is from outsider . This board is to show the insecurity of the city and people .

NECCESSITIES The second board shows the new programs that proposed will be the farming space , event plaza and market space for the people. All the new programs are built above the broken building is to have the ideas of uplift and enhance the people ‘s life . The proposed programs give hope and support for the people to continue their live .

FUTURE VISION The future vision shows the ideas of solving the food issues with farming space and all the spaces like parks, marketplace and event plaza are connected by the link bridge , this is to represent after of fulfill the basic needs , build the connection between the humans are the ways to develop the country to have a better future . The intention of the program is to provide basic needs and economic opportunity to people in Beirut to cope with the insecurity. Through the ideas of urban farming, marketplace and green garden and the event space . The concept of urbanfarming helps to fulfill the basic living requirement : foods for the people in Beirut and for self –sustainable living . They can also sell the outcome of urban farming at marketplace to get some income. The idea of green garden and event space is because Beirut is lack of a place for people to breathe and rewind . Solving the issue of the basic needs in the community could help to decrease the insecurity among the Beirut’s people.

02 Project 3

The design intention of this project is to help in solve the issues of foods and provide a platform for the Beirut community to involve in the economy activities at the same time provides the space for the event and as a gathering point of the site . The community kitchen is supported by the urban farming , food processing area , learning workshop and the cafeteria . 03. Roof garden / Green Roof

A roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane. It may also include additional layers such as a root barrier and drainage and irrigation systems

The use of timber frame structure for lobby and entrance to avoid less structure in the space . This allows the flexibility of the whole spaces and less restrictions .

05. Farming Greenhouse

04. Timber structure

The use of translucent polycarbonate panel allows partial natural light penetrate in to brighten the space and reduce the use of artificial light during the daytime .

The greenhouse for the farming is built with the steel frame structure and the tempered glass to allow the natural light penetrate in the space for the vertical farming .

The timber structure of marketplace with the timber frame and bean connected using the joinery for structure

03

Woven Pavilion The design of the pavilion is inspired by the weaving craft, is like the fluidity and freely of the weaving. Weaving is an action that everyone can be involved together . The intention of this pavilion is for people to involve in the activity and enjoy the beauty of the weaving patterns.

04 Project 3

Living Museum The design intention of the museum is to encourage the visitor to learn , involve and love the weaving activities . Besides that , the weaving panels on the facade can be changed once a year and like a festival for everyone to join and do it together during the festival , therefore it is known as the “ Living Museum” .
