one mann’s opinion

Hi all and welcome to the October issue of Mann About Town. Alex and I are learning about new areas we can include, and in our search to learn more about equestrian our contact, we are fortunate enough to have met Nicole Mann. She has been an equestrian for 20 years and we are honored to feature her and her success. Equestrian is not something often mentioned, and as you read about Nicole, her passion comes through as a factor in her successful journey.

Naturally, I’d like to thank Mount Sinai for their outstanding content in this issue. They are our most talked about section and I always get calls from all over about their content. I am honored and proud of the relationship we have built with Mount Sinai, and I’d personally like to thank Karen Wish, Brian Miller and Vanessa Gordon for their great work. The hospital has been around since my father’s days with the charities he’s worked with.

In each issue, we get exclusive content from Peter Thomas Roth, and I can’t say enough great things about him. He is a dear friend of mine and monthto-month, I learn more from each article given. Thank you to his team, including Jeff Burge, for being fabulous to work with.

I’d also like to give a shoutout to Alexis and Elizabeth Doerfler over at The Destination Designer. I always look forward to their features on luxurious stays across the world.

As always, I like to talk about the events I attended and there have been some of the best this month. To start off, I am honored to have been invited to Chagit Leviev’s event with Bach Mai over at The Chelsea Factory. It was great to see my wife and I’s good friends Chagit and her husband, Greg Sofie at the successful event alongside the high glamour of it all.

In The Hamptons, I was able to go to the Danielle Olivera event held at the Donne shop. Every day in The Hamptons we see the ongoing creativity from each event, and this one was no different. Nothing shows amazing creativity better than an event like this.

I was fortunate enough to attend the event held by

Amy and Gary Green for their Footprint of Life Gala. The Green Vision Foundation brings support and awareness to environmental challenges around the world.

Lastly, the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation held their annual golf outing at the Fresh Meadow Country Club. The outing was a big success by my friends Dennis Herman and Gary Jacob and very well attended.

This October issue has so many great features from events to dining and more. I hope everyone is enjoying the fall weather and we will see everyone next month!

“Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

- Winston Churchill

Leviev and Bach Mai Bring High Glamour Back to New York Fashion Week with Design Collaboration

Leviev joined designer Bach Mai as presenting partner of the Bach Mai Spring/Summer 2025 “Invincible Summer” fashion show on September 8, 2024, at New York City’s Chelsea Factory. For the jewelry house’s scintillating fashion week debut, Leviev paired fi ne jewelry with eleven Bach Mai runway looks. The collaborators also unveiled a co-designed Leviev x Bach Mai “Le Bal” high jewelry piece at the fashion week event – a remarkable 47-carat diamond necklace featuring a 32-carat fancy yellow diamond center stone. Chagit Leviev, CEO of Leviev Group USA, “It is an honor to be a part of this New York Fashion Week event and to collaborate with Bach Mai, whose sophisticated, colorful and exquisitely crafted fashions pair so beautifully with Leviev jewelry. We are proud to have made our own mark on fashion history with this design partnership and our work together on tonight’s landmark runway show.”

The Bach Mai Spring/Summer 2025 show, presented by Leviev, marked a joyous return to high glamour and bold color at New York Fashion Week. According to Bach Mai, “Leviev’s Beaton-inspired jewelry collection featured in the show perfectly captured the modern spirit I hoped to convey.”

The glamorous closing look of the show featured a dramatic Bach Mai gown and offered a fi rst look at the partners’ co-designed “Le Bal” diamond necklace. The one-of-a-kind fi ne jewelry piece, valued at $5 million, features a 32-carat Fancy Yellow pear-cut diamond center stone, complemented by an additional 15 carats of pavé-set diamonds, all set in 18-karat yellow gold and platinum. Its alluring design showcases exceptional jewelry artistry, a unique Leviev diamond and the feminine, extravagant forms seen throughout Bach Mai’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection.

had a love for fi ne jewelry, and the opportunity to collaborate with the amazing artisans at Leviev and their magnificent gems to create a unique and extraordinary piece of jewelry is a dream come true.”

The event culminated in a remarkable moment, as Bach Mai and Leviev paid homage to an iconic moment in fashion history– recreating Cecil Beaton’s iconic 1948 shoot of Charles James designs. Guests were invited into the tableau to closely admire the models clad in Leviev jewelry and Bach Mai designs.

Leviev, the high jewelry house led by Chagit Leviev and Greg Sofiev, curated a special Beaton-inspired jewelry jewelry collection for the occasion. Each of the exquisite jewelry designs, named after Cecil Beaton and many of the models featured in iconic 1948 shoot, showcase the extraordinary breadth and expertise of

Leviev and the world’s rarest colorless diamonds and fancy color diamonds. Altogether, the Leviev collection presented is valued well over $50 million and represents countless thousands of carats of diamonds.

Saudi princess and fashion entrepreneur Deena Aljuhani Abdulaziz was in attendance wearing a suite of Leviev jewelry. Actor Caylee Cowen, tech entrepreneur Lucy Guo, social influencer Amina Kadyrova also wore Leviev jewelry for the event. Other well-heeled attendees included Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Tanner Adell, Bailey Bass and Jessica Wang. Actor and media personality Liza Koshy was among the models wearing a Leviev diamond necklace on the runway.

Danielle Olivera Hosts the Donne Shop at Sole East in Montauk

Danielle Olivera, of Bravo’s “Summer House” fame, hosted a pop-up shop at Sole East in Montauk. The Donne Shop, named for her first of its kind platform that helps you capture, catalogue and curate your wardrobe with ease, included a group of like-minded brands curated by Danielle herself.

Participating brands included Wyld Blue, personal items from both Sasha and Oli Benz’s closets, Bontemps, East x East, Jaded Vintage/Farmers Daughter, Preloved Montauk, Road to Nowhere and Luxeire, along with Donne App merch!

Donne’s mission is to show people that there is always something to wear by helping users access and think of their clothing differently to ultimately take control of their wardrobe. The platform features two different interfaces for two different types of users: fashion enthusiasts who want to catalog and digitally style their wardrobe, and styling professionals who want to help them do it.

The best of its class, Donne will combine digital closet management and access to professional stylists with a social component for users to interact with each other’s wardrobes. Once a closet is cataloged, they can browse other users’ digital closets to look for inspiration or invite friends to come into their digital closet to help them pick outfits. Users can post daily outfits to the social feed to share with others, creating a further sense of community within the app.

Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation Hosts the 42nd Annual Golf Tournament

The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation’s (SWCRF) 42nd Annual Golf Tournament took place at the scenic Fresh Meadow Country Club in Lake Success, NY. More than 100 participants and numerous supporters raised more than $250,000 in support of SWCRF cancer research initiatives such as the Institute Without WallsTM, the International Network for Aging and Cancer Research, and the SWCRF Women’s Cancer Research Program. Together, these research programs are funding more than 60 scientists across the United States and around the world.

Over the last 20 plus years, scientific advancements have led to a decrease in cancer mortality by nearly 30 percent. However, despite significant progress in prevention, cancer incidence is increasing worldwide. To combat this, SWCRF directed more than $2.3 million in donor-supported funds to some of the world’s leading research institutions and scientists this year alone. Unique to SWCRF, funded investigators must collaborate with labs outside of their focus to help accelerate the pace of discovering new treatments.

Dennis A. Herman, Chairman and CEO of Beekman International Center, Ltd. and Gary Jacob, Executive VP Glenwood Management Corp. co-chaired the SWCRF Golf Tournament. Mr. Herman and Mr. Jacob are members of the SWCRF Board of Directors. The golf committee members included Frederick W. Barney, Jr., Michael Hight, James A. Ingram, Gerard F. Joyce, Samuel Waxman, MD and Ari Zagdanski.

Event sponsors included: The Durnan Group (Brunch sponsor), Dennis A. Herman (Lunch Co-sponsor), Gary Jacob (Dinner sponsor), Lorber Charitable Fund (BBQ at the Turn sponsor), M&T Bank (Reception sponsor), Fredrick W. Barney Jr. (Hospitality Station sponsor), Greenberg Traurig, Glenwood Management and Taub Family Companies/Palm Bay International (Patron sponsors) as well as a very special thanks to the Max B. Cohn Family Foundation.

In-kind donors included: Coty, Johnson’s Popcorn, JP Morgan Chase & Co., Greg Norman, Tharanco Lifestyle LLC, Mindset Wellness, Friedman Rosenthal Team at Brown Harris Stevens and Neuhaus.

Coach Introduces Fall Campaign, “Unlock your Courage”

Coach today launches “Unlock Your Courage,” a campaign starring new global ambassadors Elle Fanning, Charles Melton, Nazha and Storm Reid, and returning Coach Family members Jayson Tatum, Kōki and Youngji Lee. The campaign introduces Coach’s Fall 2024 collection in a series of stories about having the courage to choose authentic self-expression over the idea of perfection and is the newest exploration of “The Courage to Be Real,” Coach’s purpose-grounded platform inspiring people to express the many sides of who they are.

Coach’s “Unlock Your Courage” campaign reshapes the brand’s talent constellation with the addition of exciting new ambassadors —a global group uniquely aligned with Coach’s grounding purpose, the Courage to Be Real. In their own ways, each of these individuals display the kind of authenticity, courageous spirit, talent and style that make them stand-outs in their fi elds, and strong examples of how to confi dently explore the many facets of one’s identity.

The Fall campaign refl ects the ways today’s generation can sometimes feel constrained by their own expectations of perfection. Starting from this initial place of vulnerability, the campaign stories then fl ip the narrative, with each character unlocking their inner courage to break free from their ideas of perfection and instead celebrate their unique self-expression.

“My approach to the “Unlock Your Courage,” campaign matched my design process for the Fall collection,” said Creative Director, Stuart Vevers. “We focused on the tension between something romantic and picturesque and something very real and spontaneous; a sense of the lived in but compelling aesthetic that typifi es the spirit of New York. Elaine’s dynamic shots of our friends of the house all amplify that message of authenticity and the beauty that comes from embracing the imperfections of a well-lived life in well-loved fashion.”

Coach Global Chief Marketing and Tapestry Chief Growth Offi cer, Sandeep Seth said, “‘Unlock Your Courage’ is meant to inspire our consumers to break from that impossible standard and embrace the many facets of who they are.”

“Once Upon a Mattress” Returns, The Queen Has Met her Match

Based on Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Princess and the Pea,” “Once Upon a Mattress” was fi rst brought to Broadway in the mid 1950s and starred Carol Burnett. Encores! opened this play last season and it has since moved to the Hudson Theatre with much of the cast still in tack.

What makes “Once Upon a Mattress” a success, and there are many, is the ability to have Sutton Foster (Princess Winnifred) recreate the role as Carol Burnett herself would have. Foster was deft at giving the very same “business” that Burnett used for decades to entertain her audience. With both children and adults fi lling the theater it was the older generation that laughed the hardest; and this is due to Ms. Foster being in sync with her predecessor.

The musicals plot delves into the Queen (Ana Gasteyer) selecting a princess for her son, Prince Dauntless (Michael Urie). The problem for the Prince is that his mother does not seem to like any of his choices; nor does she want to.

Much like Mrs. Doubtfi re a few seasons ago on Broadway, this show is fi lled with talent, loads of it! From the Jester (Daniel Breaker) to the Wizard (Brooks Ashmanskas) as well as the ensemble cast, the two hours goes by fast with all the raucous slapstick comedy that the original writers had in mind to make this a much received original and now, a revival. Amy Sherman-Palladino is credited with the adaptation to the original

book. “Doubtfi re” delivered the same bold talent and raucous children friendly comedy.

In “Spamelot,” Michael Urie was ensconced to the corresponding genre as “Mattress,” and in kind, he can have much the same banter that he did last season in that Tony nominated farce. Ana Gasteyer of SNL fame is as talented in her singing and movement as she is with her comedic chops. The trio (Foster, Urie, Gasteyer) make this classic a musical to remember. The direction by Lear DeBessonet brings all the talent together, locks it in and then unloads it on the audience! Much like the lighting by Justin Townsend, the costumes by Andrea Hood are broad and wide, however, not to overbearing in that it takes away from the big musical itself. The songs too are memorable: “Shy” sung by Foster was a standout, “Sensitivity” sung by Gasteyer was brilliant and in the second act, “Happily Ever After” by Foster was moving. You even got the feeling that the show was going to be smooth sailing at the prologue, “Many Moons Ago” sung by the Jester. Breaker gave off a warm, humorous and touching rendition that was confidently displayed.

The only real downfall to this show is that Encores! tends to be lazy when it comes to its staging. Here the stage settings were no different. The musical could have achieved greater heights with more imaginative sets, instead, they kept the sets basic and put the orchestra on this big stage.

LEADING CANNABIS BEVERAGE BRAND

NOWADAYS

LAUNCHES READY-TO-DRINK THC CANNED COCKTAILS

Nowadays, the award-winning and first nationally available cannabis-infused spirit brand, proudly announces a portfolio expansion, unveiling today its newest product line: Nowadays THC Canned Cocktails. Launching in a Low Dose variety with 5mg THC per can, the new innovation puts an elevated spin on the ready-to-drink category with a versatile and convenient option, crafted from the brand’s signature best-in-taste cannabis-infused spirit and balanced by perfectly carbonated water with bursts of natural fruit flavors in every sip.

Debuting in four enticing flavors that can be enjoyed yearround—Original, Spicy Lime, Citrus and Berry—these canned cocktails promise a smooth sip and crisp finish. Additionally, the cans are available in a variety pack option allowing consumers to try the full range of flavors. Like its predecessor bottled spirit, Nowadays canned cocktails deliver a light and buzzy experience within 15 minutes of consumption and provide an alternative to alcohol, without the negative effects.

“Expanding into canned cocktails was a natural next step for us,” said Justin Tidwell, CEO and co-founder of Nowadays. “Our bottled spirits have been incredibly successful, and we wanted to build on that by taking everything consumers love about Nowadays and creating a canned version for an elevated ready-todrink experience. With this innovation, we can reach even more people and continue growing the brand.”

Formulated from premium, natural ingredients and a perfect balance of hemp-derived THC, Nowadays canned cocktails are suitable for any taste palate and can be sipped or slammed during any occasion, for an uplifting, controllable buzz. Without sacrific-

ing taste, each 12oz can contains 25 calories or less.

The sale of Nowadays Low Dose THC Cocktails began with Variety six-packs available for purchase on trynowadays.com. Retailing for $31.95 per six-pack of 12oz cans, Nowadays THC Canned Cocktails can be shipped to over 40 states and found on shelves in select liquor and grocery stores nationwide in the coming months. Following the initial rollout of its canned cocktails, the brand will introduce a stronger variety later this year, launching a 16oz option with 10mg THC per can.

This launch marks Nowadays’ first foray outside of its flagship product, Cannabis-infused Spirit and comes less than a year and a half after the brand originally came to market in April 2023. Since then, Nowadays has solidified itself as an industry leader, earning several accolades and awards including: Fast Company’s 2024 Most Innovative Companies, Bartender’s Seal of Approval and Breakout Brand at the 2024 Chilled100 Spirit Awards, Best Cannabis Non-Alcoholic Spirit at the 2023 High Spirit Awards and its Co-founders were named Forbes 2024 30 Under 30 in the Food & Drink Category.

With the introduction of THC Canned Cocktails, Nowadays continues to pioneer the cannabis beverage industry, delivering products that cater to the modern consumer’s lifestyle and preferences. This latest innovation reinforces the brand’s mission to put a new spin on drinking and strengthens its commitment to meeting the varied needs of consumers as the cannabis industry continues to evolve. Photos courtesy of Peter Thomas Roth

Since they emerged over a decade ago, under-eye patches have become a skin care staple—and consumers are more obsessed than ever. The hashtag #eyepatches has accumulated TikTok views in the hundreds of millions, and Google searches have grown at a steady rate over the past several years. Once a niche product focused primarily on hydration with basic ingredients such as glycerin, modern-day eye patches now cater to specific concerns—puffi ness, dark circles, crow’s feet—with optimized ingredients. You can also fi nd skin care patches that target concerns unrelated to the eye area, such as acne pimples, fi ne lines and wrinkles.

As TikTok and Instagram audiences continue to be captivated by patches, we turned to skin care guru Peter Thomas Roth for his expert take on the trend. Over the years, Peter has developed a variety of cult-favorite patches— including his legendary 24K Gold Hydra-Gel Eye Patches, which remain one of the top five buzziest picks according to Launchmetrics Media Impact Value® data.

Peter’s latest innovation is Peptide Skinjection™ Expression Line Hydra-Gel Patches. Although these breakthrough patches aren’t launching in Sephora until December, consumers can get an exclusive preview with his new Eyes in The Sky 3-Piece Kit available this month. Valued at $195, this $85 holiday kit includes a full-size jar of Peptide Skinjection™ Expression Line Hydra-Gel Patches, plus full sizes of 24K Gold Hydra-Gel Eye Patches and Water Drench® Hydra-Gel Eye Patches.

A Legacy of Excellence Continues at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital

Mount Sinai Heart in New York City has been renamed the Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital, in honor of Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, who built Mount Sinai’s cardiovascular program into one of the world’s leading heart centers while advancing cardiovascular medicine around the globe. “This name is a tribute to all Dr. Fuster has accomplished over these last 30 years and ensures that his vision and commitment to excellence will continue to guide us into the future,” Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, MBA, Director of the Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital and the Dr. Valentin Fuster Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Dr. Fuster, a pioneer in the treatment and study of cardiovascular disease, remains President of the Fuster Heart Hospital and Physician-in-Chief of The Mount Sinai Hospital. And with an updated name, Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital remains an umbrella of cardiovascular medicine services, research, and education that spans the Mount Sinai Health System. Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital at The Mount Sinai Hospital is ranked No. 4 nationally for Cardiology, Heart and Vascular Surgery, according to U.S. News & World Report® for 2024-2025. As a research hospital, it is home to some of the world-leading investigators into the factors and mechanisms underlying every facet of cardiovascular disease, and to clinical researchers studying new and emerging treatments. “There’s no question that our teams are doing work that is setting the pace for the field,” Dr. Bhatt said. “We are driving innovation collaboratively, under one roof and all that we do is centered on the patient.”

Patients and their families travel the nation, and the world, for cardiovascular care at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital, due to its excellence in these areas and more:

Cardiovascular Surgery

In a recent recognition of its merit, the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at The Mount Sinai Hospital received the highest possible three-star recognition in all cardiac surgical categories in the 2020-2023 Society of Thoracic Surgeons Database. “It is very unusual for a program to earn a three-star rating across all surgical procedures evaluated nationally,” says David H. Adams, MD, Cardiac Surgeon-in-Chief, Mount Sinai Health System and the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Professor and Chair of Cardiovascular Surgery. In addition, the Department once again received the highest two-star safety rating from the New York State Department of Health and is the highest volume mitral valve program in the state. “Collectively these achievements are not only a testament to the incredible skills and capabilities of our surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, nurses and cardiologists, but they also reflect the incredible multidisci-

plinary expertise available to our patients from a broad range of professionals across the Mount Sinai Health System,” notes Dr. Adams.

In another milestone, a team of Mount Sinai cardiovascular surgeons, led by Ismail El-Hamamsy, MD, PhD, Director of Aortic Surgery for the Mount Sinai Health System, performed 100 successful Ross procedures in 2023—the first program worldwide to achieve this milestone in a single year. The complex Ross procedure is the optimal treatment for replacing a diseased aortic valve in adolescents and adults, because it maximizes the use of their own tissue and restores long-term life expectancy, unlike mechanical or tissue valve replacements, says Dr. El-Hamamsy, the Randall B. Griepp Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at Icahn Mount Sinai. “This is all the more life-changing for women who are contemplating future pregnancies and for patients who lead active lifestyles,” he said.

Interventional Cardiology

Innovation, safety, and high volume are hallmarks of The Mount Sinai Hospital’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, led by Samin K. Sharma, MD, Director of Interventional Cardiology for the Mount Sinai Health System, and Annapoorna S. Kini, MD, Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. For 24 consecutive years, the lab or an interventionalist have received the highest two-star safety rating from the New York State Department of Health for PCI, also known as angioplasty—one of the most common procedures for patients with coronary artery disease. Dr. Kini was the only interventionalist in the state to receive the two-star safety rating in all PCI cases and non-emergency cases, while performing 2,844 procedures in the latest period reported, December 1, 2016, to November 30, 2019. The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory recently pioneered two innovative procedures, continuing its leadership in the field. The first, by Samin K. Sharma, MD, involved employing the world’s smallest heart pump system to provide temporary mechanical circulatory support during high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), while the second procedure treated a patient’s uncontrolled high blood pressure with the groundbreaking Symplicity Spyral renal denervation system.

“Despite taking on some of the most challenging referrals, our Cath Lab has consistently received the double-star rating,” said Dr. Kini, the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Professor of Medicine (Cardiology). “I believe that our efforts as educators and investigators—in our conferences, live cases, publications, educational applications and clinical trials—bring us to the forefront of the field.”

Electrophysiology

A journey that began nearly 10 years ago for Vivek Y. Reddy, MD, with his implantation of the country’s first single-chamber leadless cardiac pacemaker, reached fruition last year when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved of the first dual-chamber device for the treatment of bradycardia, an abnormally slow heartbeat. The AVEIR DR dual-chamber leadless pacemaker, made by Abbott, could revolutionize care for millions of people who require pacing of both upper and lower chambers of the heart. The leadless pacemaker—smaller than a AAA battery—is implanted entirely within the body. “This reduces exposure to potential lead and infection-related complications and offers a less restrictive and shorter recovery period following implantation,” says Dr. Reddy, Director of Cardiac Arrhythmia Services and the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust Professor of Medicine in Cardiac Electrophysiology.

Another game-changing approach has been advanced and pioneered by Dr. Reddy—pulsed field ablation (PFA). This method of treating atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm, offers enhanced precision and speed compared to traditional ablation methods, while significantly reducing risks such as esophageal damage, pulmonary vein injury and nerve damage. Dr. Reddy has studied the PFA system for more than 10 years, and was lead author of the ADVENT clinical trial, which paved the way for approval of the PFA system by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January 2024. The next month, Dr. Reddy and his team performed a groundbreaking procedure at The Mount Sinai Hospital, utilizing PFA technology.

A Leader’s Past and Future

Dr. Bhatt joined Mount Sinai as a leader in cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology, highly recognized for breakthroughs in areas including interventional cardiology, heart disease prevention, vascular medicine and heart failure.

Serving as Director of the renowned Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital provides the opportunity to realize a childhood dream. At age 11, the Boston, Massachusetts, native suffered a ruptured

appendix and was rushed to the local children’s hospital. “The diagnosis was initially missed in the ER, and I became septic and almost died,” he said. “Some people would have been turned off to medicine from that experience. But I loved being in the hospital with the doctors and nurses during the several weeks I was there, and that’s when my fervor for medicine took hold,” Dr. Bhatt said. Later, he decided cardiology would be his specialty, mainly because of the potential to save people’s lives. “I really felt that strongly when I was stenting closed arteries that were causing heart attacks in the middle of the night.”

After graduating as valedictorian from prestigious Boston Latin School, Dr. Bhatt obtained his science degree at MIT, his MD from Cornell, an MPH from Harvard and an Executive MBA from Oxford. He trained in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and in cardiology at Cleveland Clinic. Among his many achievements, Dr. Bhatt led a trial that demonstrated the benefit of a potent intravenous antithrombotic drug during stenting, which led to its FDA and European Medicines Agency approvals.

His work also resulted in the first FDA-approved drug, an omega-3 fatty acid prescription medication, to reduce cardiovascular risk among patients with elevated triglyceride levels already treated with statins—and his research has helped advance the understanding and treatment of patients with diabetes and obesity who have cardiovascular disease.

What’s ahead? Dr. Bhatt’s vision for the future of the Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital prioritizes investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and in cardiovascular genetics. “I think the two disciplines will be very much coupled in the future, where we will use AI to integrate risks that we can get from a patient’s history, as we do now, but also from imaging and from genetics and from biomarkers from blood and urine specimens. We will be able to integrate that vast amount of knowledge to hopefully improve the care of the individual patient in front of us, but then also to improve the care of populations of patients in New York City and around the world.”

UNLOCKING THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH: HOW PERSONALIzED WELLNESS HOLDS THE KEY TO LASTING VITALITY

Focusing on wellness and the pursuit of longevity and vitality is more than a passing trend—it’s a lifestyle. But true wellness isn’t about following generic health advice; it’s about discovering what works best for your body, on a deeply individual level. The key to unlocking this? Cutting-edge diagnostic testing that peels back the layers and reveals what your body truly needs.

In the search for renewed energy and clarity, we’ve all tried the quick fixes—the green smoothies, the detox regimens, the wellness apps and exercise routines that promise to transform how we feel. Yet, for many, those solutions don’t seem to deliver. I was ready for real answers, and that’s when I discovered Access Medical Labs.

Tucked away in the serene town of Jupiter, Florida, Access Medical Labs stands at the forefront of this revolution. A pioneer in functional medicine and advanced diagnostics, this state-of-the-art laboratory offers something far beyond your typical healthcare experience. With next-day results and tests that require half the blood volume of traditional methods, Access Medical Labs is redefining what it means to take control of your health—and, by extension, your longevity.

When I stepped inside their sleek, 25,000-square-foot facility, it was immediately clear that this is no ordinary lab. At Access Medical Labs, every blood sample is treated as more than just a test—it’s seen as a “guest.” This level of personalized care sets the tone for an experience that feels almost luxurious. A ninja phlebotomist took my blood in the most painless way I had ever experienced in all my years of blood draws. She set the tone for the seamless process my blood sample would go on.

My sample was taken on an ultra-modern automated workflow. A system that is designed to eliminate human error, offering precision and accuracy that is nothing short of remarkable. In less than

24 hours, I had detailed, actionable insights into my body’s inner workings.

This rapid turnaround wasn’t just a convenience—it was a revelation. After reviewing my results with one of the lab’s esteemed functional medicine specialists, I learned that some of my long-held “healthy habits” weren’t serving me as well as I’d thought. My food sensitivity panel, for instance, indicated that dairy and eggs—staples in my diet—were not the wellness allies I had assumed. This revelation underscored something crucial: optimal health is highly personal. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, and what works for one person may not work for another.

Access Medical Labs tests offer you a deeper understanding of how your body functions, they empower you to make informed adjustments to your lifestyle—before issues arise. This is the essence of functional medicine: it’s proactive, not reactive.

What’s particularly exciting is that you don’t need to live in Jupiter to access this level of care. Blood samples arrive at Access Medical Labs from across the country, ensuring that anyone, anywhere, can benefit from their world-class testing and insights. It’s comforting to know that behind the scenes, a team of experts is meticulously analyzing every sample to deliver results that could very well hold the key to a longer, healthier life.

In a world that often focuses on quick fixes and superficial solutions, Access Medical Labs offers something far more substantial: clarity. Through their personalized diagnostic services, I have gained the insight to fine-tune my health routine. Through diagnostic testing, you can also unlock your own potential for lasting youthfulness and vitality. A way to keep your body young simply by understanding what your body truly needs to thrive.

Psaraki

TradiTional Urban Greek CUisine, oPens on The brooklyn WaTerfronT

Psaraki, meaning little fish in Greek, is a labor of love by hospitality veteran-owner James Paloumbis, who has opened and operated many restaurant concepts for over 28 years in New York City. Upon stumbling on this waterfront property, his vision came to life, for it reflects James’ Greek heritage, revolving around the calm and simplistic lifestyle of the Greek islands.

Situated on the Brooklyn waterfront, Psaraki evokes the charm of seaside tavernas found along the shores of Greece. It offers spectacular views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Williamsburg Bridge, juxtaposing the tranquility of its ambiance with the vibrant energy of nearby Manhattan. Psaraki is a place to unwind, enjoy a perfect cocktail and savor traditional homemade Greek dishes meant for sharing while escaping NYC’s hustle and bustle.

The interior, handcrafted by James, is minimalistic and reminiscent of Classic Cycladic Greek architecture. It features woodbeam ceilings covered with bamboo, whitewashed stucco walls, white beach stones along the perimeter, a 35-foot-long white marble bar and large marble tables built for comfort with expansive port windows that have unbeatable views of the East River and Manhattan.

The menu is inspired by James’ culinary philosophy, which he terms “homemade,” where each dish embodies the essence of family recipes, traditionally prepared and presented as if you were a visitor in James’s seaside home in Greece. He has assembled a team of chefs from Greece’s finest kitchens to complete his vision. The focal point is an open kitchen featuring a custom grillwork wood-burning fire oven, serving as the centerpiece. This grill is dedicated to cooking the finest freshly sourced fish, 100% grassfed meats and authentic urban Greek cuisine elegantly plated on vibrant ceramic bowls and plates.

The restaurant’s signature presentation is the Fisherman’s Table Experience, where guests can enjoy a sampling of classic Greek dishes and a selection of Greek island favorites. Mezze includes tzatziki, spicy feta, tarama and hummus araka; Horiatiki, with tomatoes, kalamata olives, feta, onions, peppers, cucumbers, basil and EVOO; Saganaki, flambeed with rum, tableside by the waiter; and Spanakopita, prepared using a family recipe James inherited from his grandmother. From the grill: Branzino, wholegrilled Octopus and Calamari.

To begin, an amuse-bouche of Watermelon and Feta Salad with mint drizzled with honey and a balsamic glaze is presented. A-la-

carte options begin with a Raw and Cold Bar that includes East and West Coast Oysters; Crudo made with wild branzino, dill, tomato, lemon zest and EVOO; and Seafood Towers with lobster, lump crab meat, jumbo shrimp and oysters.

Sharable Appetizers highlight the house’s namesake Psaraki Fish Chips, crispy Atherina (baby fish), fried onion and lemon presented in a wrapped paper cone; Calamari, with the option of fried (all fried items on the menu are gluten-free) or grilled, garnished with lemon and herbs; Pan-Seared Scallops, served in a seashell atop a chopped buckwheat salad; and Stuffed Meatballs, filled with sundried tomato, feta and paprika sauce, served with pita.

The Garden features Dacos Cheesecake, a savory salad split into three layers: chopped tomatoes, creamy feta, diced carob barley rusks, topped with oregano, capers and EVOO; and Marouli salad, a blend of fresh herbs with romaine hearts, feta, dill, scallions and extra virgin olive oil.

Main courses are split into Land & Sea: Filet Mignon Souvlaki, a prime cut accompanied by spicy feta and pita; grilled Lamb Chops, served with Greek fries; Vegetable Moussaka, with bechamel, eggplant, zucchini, potato, cheese and tomato puree; Wood Grilled King Prawns, seared over an open flame wood oven, paired with saffron rice and ladolemono sauce (olive oil and lemon); Lobster Pasta, with cherry tomatoes and scallions; and Fish Kebabs, a kebab made of white fish, Greek greens, herbs and almond scordalia.

For summer, a well-curated wine list consists of mainly whites, rosés, reds and natural wines from the Greek island of Santorini and other parts of the Mediterranean. There is a selection of seasonal cocktails, including Santorini Margarita, Tequila, Assyrtiko wine, Greek thyme honey syrup and lime; Sea Paloma, Mezcal, lime, grapefruit and sea salt; YOGO, Lemon Vodka, cucumber vodka, Greek yogurt and lemon; and Greek beer, Mythos and Fix. Non-alcoholic beverages: Sicilian Spritz, grape, ginseng, blood orange, green mandarin and turmeric; and Negroni Sbagliato, pomegranate, gentian, rhodiola and bitter orange.

Psaraki offers a full-coffee program that features two popular Greek coffees, freddo espresso, served in a shorter cup and contains one to two shots of espresso whereas the freddo cappuccino is similar but is topped off with thick layer of cold, frothy milk as well as other popular American brews. Also available is a tea service that is displayed tableside to guests.

The New I N d I a N s peakeasy e xper I e N ce IN

Veerays, the new Indian speakeasy in Midtown, is the brainchild of Michelin-starred Chef Hemant Mathur, restaurateur Sonny Solomon and Chef Binder Saini. Blending traditional Indian flavors and drawing inspiration from the roaring 1920s, Veerays brings a new perspective to Indian cuisine. “I wanted to do something different than what everybody else is doing,” Solomon said. “The best way to describe this place is sexy and sophisticated with Bollywood beats.”

Solomon honed his skills under culinary giants such as Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Daniel Orr, David Burke and Geoffrey Zakarian. His past ventures like Kurry Qulture, Tulsi and Veeray da Dhaba have been critically acclaimed, and with Veerays, he sets the bar even higher. In collaboration with Mathur, the first Indian chef in the U.S. to earn a Michelin star, Solomon aims to provide an unparalleled dining experience where exotic Indian flavors meet the glamor of the Prohibition era.

At Veerays, the interior was designed by the visionary architectural duo Vinciane Albrecht and Anne Carcelen, co-founders of OulipO architecture studio, and cultivates an ambiance that transports guests to the era of Prohibition. The blend of old-world

elegance with contemporary touches creates a captivating atmosphere, enhanced by the luxurious materials used throughout the space. From red velvet booths to cognac leather to brass and mahogany, the space vibrates with the essence of Art Deco yet feels modern and fresh. The lamps, designed and crafted by Maison Paul Bonnotte, further elevate the setting. Each light fixture, created from noble materials such as brass, stone and leather, exudes the ambiance of the 1920s.

Chef Hemant Mathur has crafted a menu that pays homage to traditional Indian cuisine while embracing the spirit of the 1920s. The menu starts with a selection of “Swanky Starters,” including Avni’s Prohibition Bhaji, a vegetable curry cooked in tomato gravy with a soft pav roll, and Vintage Rajasthani Sule, lamb marinated with fiery red chilies, Indian spices, kachri and hung yogurt. As well as dishes like Bootlegger Bison, a modern take on a South Indian pepper fry, all reflecting this fusion of old and new.

The menu offers an array of “Showstoppers” that promise to dazzle diners. The Rogan Josh, slow-braised lamb shank with Kashmiri chilies and Duck Vindaloo, with caramelized onions and coconut rice, are just a few highlights. Tandoor-grilled meats, labeled

as “Prime Picks,” include The Don’s Lamb Chops served with pear chutney, a specialty of Chef Hemant. For those who crave the classics, the Retro Style section includes beloved dishes like Madame Makhani, a traditional butter chicken or paneer in a rich tomato fenugreek sauce. No Indian meal is complete without naan, and Veerays offers creative takes on the classic bread with flavors like Rosemary & Mint and Coconut Naan.

The “Giggle Water” cocktail menu is a tribute to the Prohibition era, with classic 1920s drinks named after infamous gangsters. The Diamond Joe, a refreshing take on the French 75, and Charles ‘King Solomon, a modern Sidecar, are just two of the options.

To conclude the meal on a sweet note, Veerays’ dessert offerings are as imaginative as the main courses. The Masquerade Ball features gulab jamun in a rich rabri sauce, while A Killer Cake offers layers of decadent chocolate indulgence. Solomon’s main goal is to leave diners in a state of happiness, and although the food is exceptional, he also wants to exude a sense of playfulness. “It’s not just a ‘fine dining’ Indian restaurant. It’s a ‘fun dining’ Indian restaurant,” he said.

NICOLE MANN

The Journey of an Adult Amateur

Photo courtesy of Sel Photography Sarah E Anderson

She was nine years old when Nicole Mann fell in love with horses. None of the other childhood activities interested her. Some may think riding horses is some kind of status symbol like a Birkin bag or Louboutins, but that is not what creates the passion. From the connection with her horse, Mann transformed from a casual rider to an obsessed one. In the beginning, lessons on the weekends with random trainers didn’t translate into performing well in horse shows. As time passed, Mann learned the sport and realized a rider needs a good horse and more importantly, a talented trainer.

As an adult, Mann tried some other hobbies, like tennis, but it never took. She bought a horse in 2016, a Hanoverian warm blood named Bea, joined a barn in Westchester and began the journey competing in amateur competitions. The first few years had its ups and downs because Mann and Bea didn’t always understand each other. “The horse knows when you want to jump and definitely knows when you don’t want to jump,” said Mann. “There were so many times Bea would peak back at me because she could feel I was unsure. It’s amazing how these animals can know how I feel, mentally.” Mann proceeded to describe many days where she was distracted with thoughts about her daily life and the horse just wouldn’t do what she wanted. Bea essentially made Mann clear her mind and pay attention to only riding. Once Mann became focused on her horse and the ring, the horse performed beautifully. Clearing your head and maintaining focus isn’t always easy. What makes it easier is having a talented trainer.

Every barn is run by a trainer, not unlike a Head Golf Professional at a country club. They have a staff that tends to the facilities, as well as the clients (riders). Mann owes much of her success to her trainer, Keirstin Scott. Scott owns and operates Trademark Farm in North Salem, NY. Scott has been a professional rider for over 20 years and learned under the tutelage of Brooke Baldwin of Riverside Farm in North Salem, NY. Just over a year ago Scott ventured out on her own and started Trademark. After only a couple of months, all her stalls were full. Now Trademark Farm trains Mann and several other competitive adult amateurs who consistently walk out of the show ring with blue ribbons. This is a sport and standard sports psychology is a critical aspect of the trainer’s repertoire. They set goals for the season, work towards accomplishing them to then set more. “Achieving our goals is the most satisfying and enjoyable part of horse showing,” said Mann.

“Obsessed” may feel a bit like a hyperbole but in this case, it’s not. Mann and the other riders at Trademark ride six days a week and travel three hours for competitions. During the winter, there is a series of shows at Old Salem Farm where these winter warriors bundle up and compete in 20–30-degree temperatures. Mann set a goal of becoming the winter series low adult (2’6” fences) Champion. Not only did she accomplish this goal, but she also won seven shows in a row! Mann and Scott’s new goal is to become the champion of the adult amateur (3’0”) division. As such is life, Bea, is now 14 years old and can no longer jump 3’0” fences. She recently leased a new horse, a seven-year-old Dutch warmblood, gelding named Carrado. Carrado hops over 3’0” fences like bouncing on a trampoline. With only two shows under his belt before finding Mann, they were champions at their first event together at Fairfield Hunt Club in Westport, CT. More recently, Mann and Carrado finished 10th at a Derby in Saugerties, NY and realized they have a lot of hard work ahead of them.

Ultimately, this passion can lead to exciting experiences like end of year final championships. Mann qualified for Zone 2 Horse of the Year championships with Bea but chose to pursue her new journey with Carrado. Just like any other hobby, the obsessed find each other. Many of the riders at Trademark have become close friends and always cheer each other on during events.

Although Mann rides almost every day, the rides last between 45 minutes to an hour. After dropping the kids off at school and hitting the gym, there is still plenty of time left in the day before school ends. “Moms can still have their passions,” says Mann. Horseback riding is a sport and sports require physical fitness. Mann felt she was plateauing as an athlete and realized she needed to become stronger in the saddle. A dear friend of hers recommended a gym that trains Division One college athletes. The gym, Division One, is owned by Karl Pfistner. Pfistner regularly trains baseball, football, lacrosse and soccer players who are recruited from high school to Division One colleges with several athletes who had turned professional in their respective sports. Needless to say, Mann started to train like a serious athlete. To be sure, it is no coincidence that her performance in the ring improved in lock step with her training. Along with Scott, Mann owes much of her success to Pfistner as well.

Mann has incredible support in her life from each of her trainers but the most support came from her mother, growing up through today. “I can’t thank my mom, Theresa enough for being there for me during this journey. If it wasn’t for her, I

Photo

wouldn’t be where I am today. For all things she sacrificed for me to do what I love,” Mann said. “When I was a kid, she was my driver, groom, horse holder and always making sure I had what I needed and my number one fan at the in gate. No matter how old I am to this day my mom still comes with me to the horse shows and I love it! I am so grateful for all things that she has done for me.”

Mann is competitive, but riding horses is more cathartic and almost meditative. Extreme surfers and skiers typically claim their obsession is the clearing of the mind. Either they extremely focus on the task at hand, or they can be seriously injured. Those activities force the extreme athletes to eliminate distractive thoughts. Horseback riding does the same thing, but far less dangerously. The horses demand your full attention and combined with the majestic scenery, a sense of peacefulness always follows. Mann is looking forward to those cold winter series events approaching and I suspect she will achieve yet another goal, becoming champion of the adult amateur division. Mann gives thanks to those who helped her along the way, “A big thank you to head trainer, Keirstin Scott and barn manager Beth Scovotti and the Trademark team.”

Christian Juul Nielsen Debuts his Spring/ Summer 2025 Collection for Aknvas

Aknvas was founded in 2019 by Danish designer Christian Juul Nielsen. This emerging designer brand focuses on thoughtful, well-designed and innovative clothing for discerning and dynamic women and men. Clients can expect luxury level products designed to move seamlessly from day to evening, with a focus on drape, flattering silhouettes, innovative knits and an elevated palette. Drawing from Nielsen’s previous roles at Dior and Oscar de la Renta, the brand incorporates design techniques from his time designing couture gowns with each garment crafted with a similar attention to detail.

The collection, entitled Nordic Midsummer Camp, transports us to the whimsical yet adventurous essence of a Nordic summer, blending nostalgia with modern sensibility. Built around the notion of youthful exploration and nature’s serene beauty, the collection unfolds in three distinct chapters (“Urban Scout,” “Monochromatic Flower Fields” and “Radiant Dew”), each telling a unique story that captures the essence of midsummer. Key looks include signature denim and canvas workwear-inspired jackets, delicate floral appliques on tops and shimmering sequined embroidered dresses.

The collection contains looks for men and women, accompanied by the brand’s first handbag offerings. “I wanted to create a bag that fits the ready to wear Aknvas girl. Feminine and functional that goes from day to evening,” says Nielsen. The miniature bags will be available for spring in a wide array of pastel and neutral shades.

The runway show also continued a continued partnership with Stuart Weitzman for the women’s shoes. The global luxury footwear brand premiered their Emerson Capsule Collection, a range of moto-inspired silhouettes defined by It-Girl energy and lug soles, on the runway in a see now-buy now capacity. “I wanted to work with Stuart Weitzman because their craftsmanship perfectly aligns with the Aknvas vision – creating luxury clothes and footwear that empower women,” says Nielsen. “Their EMERSON capsule collection embodies the strength, confidence and boldness I envisioned for my runway collection.” Men’s footwear was provided by Kenner. Additional support for the runway show was provided by The Travel Agency.

Notable attendees at the show included: Jenna Lyons, Meredith Marks, Lisa Barlow, Erin Lichy, Kat Graham, James Charles, Whitney Port and Julia Cumming.

Cupids Reflection
Little White Lies

From Darkness to Light

Lauren McKinney stands on the precipice of an unseen chasm, in a world where countless artists pursue the fleeting glimmers of light.

As a rising force in abstract art, McKinney’s creations are more than mere paintings—they are a visceral expression of her inner world, each brushstroke driven by the encroaching shadow of her fading vision. Her work is a daring interplay of color and emotion, forged in the face of impending darkness, producing masterpieces that not only challenge but surpass her fate. While the Impressionists captured the dance of light and Leonardo da Vinci marveled at the complexity of the human eye, McKinney’s art boldly redefines these conventions. Painting without the luxury of clear sight, she taps into the profound depths of her inner vision, crafting canvases that throb with a raw beauty, reshaping the very concept of perception.

McKinney’s journey is both heartrending and inspiring. Diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that gradually robs her of her sight, she has turned this looming darkness into a wellspring of creativity. Within this void, her art has found a voice—a voice that echoes with a boldness born of deep suffering and the unyielding spirit of a woman who refuses to be silenced.

Born and raised in Washington, D.C., during the turbulent 1980s and 1990s, McKinney’s early years were marked by the harsh realities of urban life, including gang violence and a pervasive sense of despair within the Black community. Yet, amid this turmoil, a persistent spark within her refused to be extinguished—a spark that would one day cut through the darkest clouds of adversity.

The global pause brought on by the COVID pandemic became a turning point for McKinney. In the enforced stillness, she sought refuge in the warmth of her family and the exploration of passions long ignored. It was during this time that McKinney uncovered her natural gift for painting. What began as a therapeutic endeavor soon blossomed into a profound means of transcending her visual limitations and expressing the depths of her soul.

Despite the daunting challenges of her condition, McKinney’s art

radiates an unapologetic beauty. Her canvases are more than just visual works—they are visceral experiences, inviting viewers to see the world through the lens of an artist on the verge of blindness. Her abstract compositions, rich with emotion and vibrant colors, stand as a testament to her unbreakable resolve and the purity of her creative vision. In 2021, her burgeoning talent was showcased in the Chela Mitchell pop-up group exhibit and the No Kings Collective’s Umbrella group exhibit, marking significant milestones in her artistic journey and cementing her place within the art world.

Her path to recognition began even earlier, in 2020, when a collaborative piece of hers graced the cover of the Washington City Paper. This work, a testament to her collaborative spirit and artistic brilliance, was later featured at Plain Sight, a street-view gallery. The success of this exhibit led to a feature in District Fray Magazine, further amplifying her artistic voice and vision.

McKinney’s work embodies a delicate balance of fragility and strength, a dance between light and shadow. Each brushstroke defies the encroaching darkness, declaring that beauty can emerge from suffering. Her art is not confined by her visual impairments; rather, it is liberated by them, allowing her to explore realms of perception that few others can reach.

As McKinney confronts the daunting reality of blindness, her art grows even more radiant. It is this struggle, this confrontation with the void, that imbues her work with an unmatched beauty. Despite her deteriorating eyesight, McKinney’s resolve to create remains unshaken. Her paintings transcend mere art; they are manifestations of her spirit, reflections of her journey and celebrations of the enduring power of the human soul.

Lauren McKinney stands as a symbol of resilience and creative brilliance. Her story is not just about an artist defying the odds, but about a woman who, despite immense adversity, continues to paint the world with colors only she can see. Her work, born of suffering and courage, is a testament to the profound beauty that arises when light meets darkness.
