State of Disaster declared on floods!

Government has declared a National State of Disaster to enable an intensive, coordinated response to the impact of floods that are affecting Mpumalanga, the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, the Northern Cape and North West provinces.

The declaration, made in terms of the Disaster Management Act of 2002, was on Monday gazetted by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.

The National Disaster Management Centre has, in terms of Section 23 of the Disaster Management Act, classified the impact of current, abovenormal rainfall in various parts of the country – with Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape as the most affected – as a national disaster.

A national disaster may be declared by the Minister CoGTA where disastrous events occur or threaten to occur in more than one province.

The Presidency on Monday said the National Disaster Management Centre has received reports ranging from flooded homes, vehicles swept away by floodwaters and overflowing dams and sewerage facilities, to

the loss of basic infrastructure and damage to roads, bridges and a Limpopo hospital.

“In agriculture, farmers have suffered crop and livestock losses, and anticipate further losses as the South African Weather Service predicts that current heavy rains will persist.

“These conditions have been brought on by the La Niña global weather phenomenon which occurs in the Pacific Ocean but impacts on a country like South Africa with above-normal rainfall,” said Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya.

Forecasts indicate that this weather pattern will remain in this state during the early part of 2023.

The presence of a La Niña event usually has its strongest impact on rainfall during the mid-summer months.

He said: “With the continued strengthening of the La Niña event, the country can expect above-normal rainfall and below-normal temperatures over the summer rainfall areas.

“Taken together, these conditions

National entities, including the South African Police Service and the South African National Defence Force, may be required to play a role in the response to the disaster.

The National Disaster Management Centre continues to monitor, coordinate response and recovery measures by the relevant organs of

state and stakeholders. This further includes the dissemination of early warnings and advisories on weather forecasts by the South African Weather Service.

Magwenya said President Cyril Ramaphosa’s thoughts were with affected communities across the country.

“The President appreciates the way in which entities of government, non-governmental organisations and community-based structures have responded to date.”

Mthembu family needs help after tragic shack fire!

The Mthembu Family from Extension 16 in Tsakani, Ekurhuleni, is in desperate need of assistance after a fire devastated their shack on February 6th.

The fire, which is believed to have started in the early hours of the morning, left the family with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Thandi Mthembu (58) recalls the events of that morning, “We still do not know what caused the fire because there was no load shedding and there weren’t any lit candles. We were sleeping and I heard some noise. When I went outside to check, I found that the shack was already in flames but I was able to break the window to rescue the children that were trapped inside. Our neighbors also assisted and used water to keep the fire at a minimum damage but it was too much.”

Josephine Mthembu (42), another member of the family, shared that everything was lost in the fire, including their ID’s and the children’s birth certificates.

“This fire has really affected our family and this is stressful because we are not working and depend on the social grant. I’m sad that we now have nothing,” she said. A community member, who was moved by the family’s need, took to social media to appeal for help. The family is asking for donations in the form of food, furniture, clothes, toiletries, and bedroom items.

“We would like to request for donations with food, furniture, clothes, toiletries, bedroom stuff,” said Josephine.

In a time of crisis, it is important for com-

munities to come together and support those in need.

The Mthembu family’s situation is a reminder of how quickly our lives can change and how important it is to support each other in times of need. The Gauteng High Court has overturned the council meeting held on February 2, which resulted in the removal of Council Speaker, Councillor Raymond Dhlamini.

In response to the court’s ruling, Mayor Alderwoman Tania Campbell welcomed the decision and emphasized the importance of prioritizing the needs of the residents of the city.

“Now that the court has overturned the illegal outcomes of 2 February 2023, it is crucial that all political parties represented in Council put residents first and allow the processes of council to take place at the next council meeting,” said Mayor Campbell.

The mayor said urgent business of the Metro council, which was delayed twice, can now proceed, bringing much-needed relief to the city’s residents.

The priority for Councillors will be to focus on the adjustment budget to deliver essential services to the community.

The Mayor’s office expressed hope that all political parties will cooperate in the future and work together for the good of the city and its residents.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Gauteng province has welcomed the court ruling and called it

a victory against what he calls ‘corruption coalition’ led by the African National Congress (ANC).

According to the party, the unlawful hijacking of the City Council by the unlawful political actions of the City Manager, Dr Imogen Mashazi, to promote the interests of the ANC, EFF and their accomplices in Council, stalled the ability of the coalition government to focus on service delivery solutions.

“Had it not been for the political games of the coalition of corruption, Ekurhuleni City Council would have been able to ensure swift passage of the City’s Adjustment Budget – passage of which would ensure progress on the road of getting services to the quality residents deserve,” explained Provincial Party Leader, Solly Msimanga.

The ANC Caucus in Ekurhuleni is yet to respond to these developments.

Minister of Electricty to be appointed by Presidency!

President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a national State of Disaster – with immediate effect – as an intervention to the current energy crisis gripping the country.

In response, he also will appoint a Minister of Electricity in the Presidency to assume full responsibility for overseeing all aspects of the electricity crisis response, including the work of the National Energy Crisis Committee.

“The Minister will focus full-time and work with the Eskom board and management on ending load shedding and ensuring that the Energy Action Plan is implemented without delay,” he said

Eskom has been battling to keep the lights on for the past few months, leading to increased stages of load shedding and a devastating impact on lives, livelihoods and businesses.

The President announced the State of Disaster during the State of the Nation Address at Cape Town City

Hall, on Thursday evening (February 9).

“In a time of crisis, we need a single point of command and a single line of march. Just as we address the cause of the crisis, we also need to address its impact. The crisis has progressively evolved to affect every part of society.

“We must act to lessen the impact of the crisis on farmers, on small businesses, on our water infrastructure, on our transport network and a number of other areas and facilities that affect our people’s lives.

“In considering all these matters and the crisis that we are in, the National Disaster Management Centre has consequently classified the energy crisis and its impact as a national disaster. We are therefore declaring a national state of disaster to respond to the electricity crisis and its effects,” President Ramapohosa said.

The President stressed that the debilitating energy shortage in which

the country finds itself requires government to move with increased urgency.

“Extraordinary circumstances call for extraordinary measures. The energy crisis is an existential threat to our economy and social fabric. We must spare no effort, and we must allow no delay, in implementing these measures,” he said.

How it will work

The Minister of Electricity in the Presidency is expected to be appointed to focus solely on bringing the country out of the current energy deficit. The President explained that the declaration will enable government to “provide practical measures” to assist businesses that have been devastated by the effects of load shedding.

“The state of disaster will enable us to provide practical measures that we need to take to support businesses in the food production, storage and retail supply chain, including for the rollout of genera-

tors, solar panels and uninterrupted power supply.

“Where technically possible, it will also enable us to exempt critical infrastructure such as hospitals and water treatment plants from load shedding. It will enable us to accelerate energy projects and limit regulatory requirements while maintaining rigorous environmental protection as well as procurement principles and technical standards,” he said.

President Ramaphosa assured the public that expenditure related to the State of Disaster will be monitored closely by the Auditor General’s office to guard against “abuse of any funds needed” to address the energy crisis.

The Minister of Public Enterprises, however, will remain in charge of Eskom and continue to steer its restructuring and “ensure the establishment of the transmission company, oversee the implementation of the just energy transition programme, and oversee the establishment of the SOE Holding Company”.

Mzansi in serious need of blood!

With less than 1% of South Africans are active blood donors, the SANBS says the national blood supply is significantly low!

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is currently facing a critical shortage of blood supplies, causing hospitals across the country to be in dire need of donations.

The restrictions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic have severely limited the ability of the SANBS to collect adequate blood stocks, especially from schools, colleges, community centers, and corporate blood drives.

In an effort to raise awareness of this critical situation, we recently had a Q&A session with Katrina Makamo, a Donor Relations Practitioner based in Johannesburg.

Here are the highlights of the interview:

Mapepeza: What is the aim of SANBS?

Katrina: The aim of SANBS is to collect and supply the country with safe blood.

Mapepeza: Who is eligible to donate blood? What are the requirements? Are foreigners eligible?

Katrina: You must be between the ages of 16 and 75 years old and weigh a minimum of 50kgs (for platelets, a minimum of 55kgs). You must be in good health, lead a low-risk lifestyle, and consider your blood safe for transfusion. You can’t have donated blood in the last 56 days (or platelets in the last 14 days). Foreigners may be eligible to donate if they have been in South Africa for more than 3 years and have not been to their country or a malaria high-risk country in more than 3 years.

Mapepeza: Where can one donate blood?

Katrina: There are over 81 donor centers nationally and over 7500 mobile blood drives.

site, take a quick quiz to check their eligibility, and then go to a local donor center if they qualify.

Mapepeza: What can one expect when they go to donate blood?

Katrina: You will be required to complete a Donor Questionnaire and have a one-on-one interview with a nurse to ensure you understand the questions and the importance of being honest. Your blood pressure and hemoglobin (iron) levels will also be checked.

Mapepeza: Are there different ways of donating blood?

Katrina: Yes, you can donate whole blood, plasma, or platelets.

Mapepeza: Are there any risks associated with donating blood?

Katrina: Blood donation is generally safe, but some people may feel lightheaded after donating. The Donor Questionnaire and interview are done to ensure you are fit to donate.

Mapepeza: Is there a charge for donating blood?

Katrina: No, medical aid pays for it and the government pays at public hospitals.

Mapepeza: What precautions does one need to take after donating blood?

Katrina: We advise against participating in strenuous activities like running a marathon or lifting heavy weights.

Mapepeza: How long does it take for the body to replace donated blood?

Jele (44) from Bluegum View in Duduza is a self-published author with more than four books under his belt that he intends to utilize in spreading the message of inspiring the youth.

Speaking to Mapepeza, the passion for literature began in the early stages of his childhood. “I started writing as a little boy and I have always loved books and enjoyed mental activities like reading and writing,” he said.

His first book titled, Ifu elimnyama nenkanyamba was published in 2018 and he says it aims to highlight social ills and the scourge of Gender based Violence in the country.

He explains: “My books are informative and for everyone, especially young people. I want to inspire men to speak out and take action against the killing of women and children and for those men who are also being abused to reach out for help. I talk about all the corruption by our government and the unfairness of our justice system.”

Like many many writers, Bongumusa has approached a number of media houses and book stores in an attempt to promote his books locally. “My challenges is that I still want to make a book launch, because I never have, and I don’t have enough support to do that at all. The com-

pany that print my books can’t do anything without me paying first on which that is the huge strain over my shoulder but I am trying as you see, these 7 books, and still five are finished but not published yet. I would like to get more exposure and platforms to sell,” he said.

Jele says he also wants to empower and encourage aspiring authors never to give up.

“To be somewhere you have to start somewhere and to become something you have to start to do something of your own, even if loads are stacked against you. And keep going no matter how hard it is, never give it up if life still allows you to breathe. Lastly but not the end of my motivation stanzas, I believe that a small good frame of mind could save many lives, so as little mistake can destroy many lives too.”

Bongumusa’s books are available on Amazon and he is active on social media where he engages and updates the public about his work.

Mzansi mourn football legend John Moeti!

The South African Football Association (SAFA) and the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts, Culture & Recreation are mourning the loss of legendary Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates midfielder John Moeti.

The news of his passing was confirmed by family spokesperson Victor Rakhale in the early hours of Monday morning (6 February 2023).

The passing of John Moeti has left a profound impact on the South African football community and beyond. His contributions to the sport will always be remembered, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players.

Moeti was part of the Bafana Bafana national squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) under coach Clive Barker.

He had 29 caps for the national team and also played for Orlando Pirates, Dynamos, and SuperSport United.

“It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we inform you of the passing of John “Dungi” Moeti,” said Rakhale. “He succumbed to his illness in the early hours of this morning (6 February 2023) at home, surrounded by his family and brethren in prayer.”

SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan expressed his condolences and offered support to the family. “The South African Football Association and I wish to convey our sincerest condolences and heartfelt sorrow to the family and friends of Dungi Moeti. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones and friends,” he said.
