Well I didn’t think we would get such a warm summer so far after the deluges earlier in spring. I love the warm dry days, but gardeners are kept busy each day watering - then there’s a hosepipe ban - then it’s Autumn and more rain - what a cycle.

If you like history, then there is a new book launched this month on WW1 and Blidworth from local authors Dale and John Smallwood. They have attended signing’s in August at local venues and we have a competition to win a signed copy. Sherwood News and Information Mark Spencer MP One of my top priorities since being elected in 2010 has been Job creation.

Employment is always the key to unlock a better and more prosperous life for us and our families. We are seeing more and more good local companies looking for staff, our people definitely have the skills so let’s get the two together.

The government has been doing its part, we have a growing economy, more people employed than ever before and consistently falling unemployment, including youth unemployment. There is still a long way to go and I don’t think the job is over just yet but I think we are definitely headed in the right direction. The latest employment figures for Sherwood show that the number of unemployed people claiming Job Seekers Allowance fell by 503 compared to June 2013 and is 137 lower than in May 2014.

This is all good news but there is more the Gov can do, like raising the tax threshold.

This is why the point at which you start paying income tax continues to be raised so that you keep more of your hard earned

money than ever before. This government is creating jobs and making sure you keep more money in your pockets.

So what can I do? How can I help boost employment in my constituency? Well following the huge success of my jobs fair in Hucknall last year I have decided to hold another, this time in Ollerton.

Jobs Fairs are a great way to meet local employers, find out about jobs or training opportunities and network.

We have several companies that have already confirmed their attendance and I’m sure many more to come. If you are looking for a job, training opportunity, apprenticeship, or maybe just some advice or guidance on your CV then this is the event for you.

Whether you have been unemployed for 10 years or 10 days come along and see what is on offer, you won’t be disappointed!

Sizzling Summer Tan - Quick Tips

o avoid risks when out in the sun and achieve a safe tan, follow these tips.

Exfoliate Your Skin - To achieve the best possible tan outdoors, you must exfoliate before sun exposure. The act of exfoliation removes the dead cells from the uppermost layer of the skin and allows for fresh skin to appear. The removal of dead skin will also allow you to tan more easily because your tan will appear and fade evenly.

Wear SPF Sunscreen - Contrary to the beliefs, you can still tan with sunscreen. Sun protection factor (SPF) extends the time you can spend in the sun without suffering additional skin damage.

Higher SPF numbers therefore provide better protection against ultraviolet B “burning rays” (UVB) rays.

Spending a whole day at the beach may give you a tan look for a day but it may very well leave you with sunburns when you leave. 30 min to 1 hour of sun a day allows your body to produce adequate melanin to build for the next time you tan.

House & Home Crunchy apple and blackberry crumble

This is a healthy twist on an apple crumble recipe. It's made with blackberries; plus muesli, oats and nuts for extra crunch.

Ingredients For the filling 900g/2lb apples 350-400g/12oz-1lb blackberries 175g/6oz demerara sugar 2 lemons For the topping 225g/8oz plain flour 175g/6oz butter 55g/2oz demerara sugar 125g/4oz muesli or a mixture of oats, seeds and chopped nuts Preparation method

1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.

2. Peel, core and chop the apples into small chunks. Cut the lemons in half and squeeze the juice over the apple and mix well.

This not only adds flavour but prevents the freshly peeled apples from discolouring.

3. Layer the apples, blackberries, and sugar in a large pie dish 4. Place the flour in a large bowl and then rub in the butter until it resembles breadcrumbs - leave a few lumps of butter so that the topping is not too fine. Add the muesli or oat/seed/nut mixture and the sugar and mix through.

5. Use a spoon to sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the fruit. Bake for 45 minutes or until the fruit is cooked and bubbling juices seep through the topping.

6. Cool for a few minutes and then serve with custard or fresh cream.

BBQ - Summer Sizzling & Safe Barbecue Safety Advice A barbecue should be a safe and enjoyable experience avoid being distracted whilst cooking. To avoid injuries or damage to property, follow these simple precautions:  General Safety -Make sure your barbecue is in good working order.

Choose a flat site, well away from a shed, trees or shrubs. Keep children, garden games and pets well away.

Never leave the barbecue unattended.

Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies.  Charcoal Barbecues -Use enough charcoal to cover the base to about 50mm. Use recognised fire lighters or

starter fuel and only on cold coals – never use petrol or paraffin. Don’t put hot ashes into a wheelie bin – they could melt the plastic and cause a fire.  Gas Barbecues -Make sure the tap is off before changing the gas cylinder.

Change cylinders outdoors if possible or in a ventilated area and don’t overtighten joints. After cooking, turn off the gas cylinder before turning off at the controls to ensure any residual gas is used up.

Fire Safety in the Countryside Every year fire is responsible for the destruction of thousands of acres of countryside, open spaces and wildlife habitat.

Many of these fires are started deliberately but by following a few simple precautions and showing a little extra care, many accidental ones can be prevented:  Dispose of smoking materials properly and make sure they are completely extinguished.

Security & Safety Thieves Love Warm Weather!

With the start of the school holidays and the hot weather it’s easy to forget that open windows, property such as mowers or bicycles left outside and unsecured garden sheds provide a welcome invitation for the opportunistic criminal.

Please, take a few sensible precautions to prevent you from becoming a victim of crime.

Also the hot weather seems to drive an increase in noise-related anti-social behaviour as people enjoy themselves outside. It’s important that we show some consideration for our neighbours – no-one wants to stop anyone enjoying themselves, it’s just that one person’s party can be another person’s pain.

I know that many youngsters feel there is not enough to do in the holidays, something which is often cited as the reason for anti-social behaviour. However, there are

Dealing with doorstep callers With the arrival of spring there is likely to be an increase in doorstep callers offering to carry out gardening work such as tree cutting, selling of compost also roof and driveway cleaning and sealing.

Whilst these callers may well be genuine callers, we’d like to remind residents to carefully consider accepting work from cold callers who knock on your door. If there are problems with the goods they sell or the work they do you may struggle to contact them again, you could end up paying more than you thought you had agreed to, and are likely to have little recourse.

You should always ask to see some identification from callers at your door. Genuine callers will normally make an appointment first and carry identification from their company with their photograph on. Most organisations have a telephone number that you can call to verify the representative’s identity. We would usually advise not to use the number stated on their card as it could be false, and suggest looking up the company in the telephone book or on the internet.

If you are concerned about cold callers in your area you can call Nottinghamshire Police on 101 or in an emergency 999.

Beware Bogus Green Deal assessors

Reports of a company who cold called a Local Mansfield resident at the door and told him he was entitled to a free boiler replacement under the government Green Deal initiative has been revealed as bogus. The resident was asked to pay £299 for an energy assessment survey and told they would get this money back!

The resident became suspicious after not being able to get through to the company and reported the matter to Trading Standards.

L

ocal authors, John and Dale Smallwood have written a book which looks at life in a Nottinghamshire village.

'Blidworth and the First World War' tells how life in the Parish of Blidworth, that at the time included Fishpool, Rainworth and Blidworth Bottoms, changed during the first thirty years of the 20th century.

The book commemorates the local men who sacrificed their lives in the 'War to end all Wars'. It also tells of how the war might have been avoided if a local shooting accident had ended in a fatality.

We glimpse life as it was through the eyes of bootmaker,

Sam Clarke and hear stories about the daily life of our Parishioners. We learn that Blidworth had the first Cooperative in the country. We introduce the reader to 'Plough Bullocking' and learn the rules of 'Husky Fusky'. We also tell of the revival of the unique 'Rocking Ceremony' in St Mary's Church of the Purification.

The men who returned from

the war faced great changes and some experienced severe hardships. The village became less dependent on agriculture as the mining industry developed and changed completely with the sinking of Blidworth Colliery.

The book is richly illustrated with photographs of Blidworth Parish and its people, many of which have not been previously published.

The book was launched at Blidworth Library on 4th August, the 100th anniversary to the day of when the war started. The book will be on sale for £10 and the authors were available to talk and sign copies if required. The library is open from 9 am to 12.30 PM on Mondays.

Ensure your bike is roadworthy Regularly check your brakes and tyre pressure. Don’t ignore any strange noises, vibrations, or jumping gears – they usually indicate a problem.

Learn how to control your bike Learn how to shift your body weight when making an emergency stop, be able to swerve safely, use your gears properly, control the bike while looking directly behind and confidently ride with one hand.

On the road, ride with at least two of your fingers on your brake levers.

Don’t be afraid to use roads Cycling in parks and on cycle paths is great fun, but being able to use the road gives you the freedom cycling was intended to give you. Cycling on the pavement, even considerately, is against the law.

If you are nervous about cycling on the road, get training.

Know how to position yourself in traffic

Local Business Women’s Group Breast Cancer Charity Event It’s Women’s Business Group, Nottinghamshire, a local professional ladies organisation recently held a fund-raising lunch in aid of the Southwell Pink Ladies on Thursday 17th July at the Oakham Suite, Nottingham Road, Mansfield NG8 4AE. Southwell Pink Ladies are a support group of ladies from Southwell and the surrounding areas who have all experienced breast cancer. Over the last two years the Pink Ladies have raised and donated over £11,500 to relevant & worthy causes such as funding the setting up of the Pink Room at Maggie’s Centre at the City Hospital, a place where cancer patients, their families and friends can go for support and an informal chat in a very friendly atmosphere.

At the lunch, Marion and Pat from Southwell Pink Ladies shared why the support group started and how it can help all ladies who have been diagnosed or are ongoing treatment from breast cancer.

Friends of Tippings Wood

Become a Friend

We are very keen to get a new Friends group together as members have recently retired leaving it a bit depleted. We are looking for local people who have different skills to help guide the work that is done on Tippings Wood and help communicate this to local residents.

A Friends group would meet anything from 4 times a year to once a month and sometimes fund raise themselves for items such as benches and signposts. Typical roles within a Friends group are Chair, secretary, (the treasurer is still active) committee members and practical task volunteers. Also it would be good to have someone who is used to using social media for promoting the group too.

Greenwood are organising task days so look out for information on the entrances to Tippings. Are you available to help to stop Tippings Wood becoming neglected?

Garden Bird of the Month - The Dunnock I often feel sorry for this small bird as I think it is often overlooked, possibly because it is a grey and brown bird and appears drab compared to many other garden birds.

It is a robin-sized bird and if you look closely you will see that it isn’t as drab

as it first appears. It has a blue-grey head and breast, and has streaky brown and black markings on its back.

People often confuse it with the House Sparrow but one defining factor is its bill. The House Sparrow has a thick bill which is used for eating grain and large seeds. The Dunnock’s bill is fine and is better suited to small seeds, insects and spiders.

To confuse matters even more, it is sometimes called the Hedge Sparrow. It is, however, a member of the Accentor family and is not related to the House Sparrow.

Its habit is also quite different to that of a House Sparrow which goes around in noisy groups. Instead, the Dunnock moves furtively amongst the undergrowth, constantly flicking its tail and wings whilst

it searches for food.

One interesting fact about the Dunnock is that it is a common host bird of the Cuckoo. When a female Cuckoo lays her eggs in other bird’s nests, her egg is normally a similar colour to the host’s eggs but in the case of the Dunnock, this doesn’t seem to apply. For some reason, the Dunnock fails to spot the difference between its egg and the Cuckoo’s egg and it continues to feed and rear the young cuckoo. This doesn’t seem to affect the Dunnock population as it can have two or three broods a year.

Do look out for this small unobtrusive bird as it creeps around the undergrowth in your garden.

Blidworth & Ravenshead PPG

This is a small group of patients who represent the patients of the local GP Practice at Blidworth & Ravenhead. All patients are welcome to attend our meetings to learn more about how important patients contributions are to GPs’ in helping them understand their needs in respect of healthcare locally. So as a PPG we try to give local people a voice on healthcare locally. We discuss ways of improving provision at the practice and we are involved in increasing patient’s awareness locally about improving healthcare or managing particular conditions.

This year we will have our own newsletter.

That will be circulated around the villages and in the surgeries. So keep a lookout.

In addition to the PPG we have a virtual Patient Reference Group.

What is this? You may ask. Well, patients sign up and their names are held by the practice as someone they can contact at times for information about performance and developing practice.

Blidworth Local News Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society Our speaker for the July 1st meeting was Ron Stammers.

Ron’s subject was Victorian and Edwardian Seasides and he soon proved that there was very little that he didn’t know about the subject. Our audience was fascinated by his stories of how holiday makers were expected to sleep four to a bed, two one way and two the other way and of how everyone ended up with flea bites. In fact if you didn’t go home covered in bites, people didn’t believe you had been to the seaside at all! National newspapers carried advertising for Blackpool saying they had the largest fleas of any resort; this was in order to sell their fleas to travelling flea circuses!

Ron also told us how people were taught to swim, first, by pushing them under water and then in the second lesson throwing them in horizontally.

Apparently there is no record of what the third lesson was!

Ron earned a great round of applause from our very appreciative audience.

During the coffee break members and guests were invited to view another selection of photographs from our archives and browse the library books.

After the break, Alan Higgins spoke about his own family history. This included his grandfather’s bravery in the first World War, family

connections with U. S. state governors and the first billion dollar company in the States. He emphasised how interesting discovering family history can be.

Ravenshead Local News The Cornwater Club

It’s a new Rotary year and past President Mike Lee’s final duty was handing over to new president Dr Raj Chandran. (photo below) One of Mike’s last duties was to chair a committee meeting on July 1st that resolved how £3100 from the our charity funds raised during the year would be distributed to his chosen charities; Cancer Research, John Eastwood Hospice, Notts Lincs Air Ambulance, Rainbows Children’s Hospice, and Cornwater Club.

We were also very pleased this year to have been able to help many other groups and individuals within our community. One such group being the children of Blidworth Oaks Primary School. Photo right shows Head Teacher Shaun Walker receiving a donation of £1600, presented by

President Mike Lee and Richard Lord, to support the building of a polytunnel, which is already well used by pupils producing hanging baskets and tubs to help Blidworth retain the Gold Medal in the East Midland’s in Bloom competition.

A group of Blidworth slimmers have lost 63 stones over six weeks and have presented Dr Peter Rose, Chairman of the Cornwater Clubs, with a cheque for £198.00.

The group of slimmers who attend the Wednesday Slimming World sessions raised the money through a sponsored slim, with coffee and cake groups and by collecting small change.

The groups’ leader, Caroline Dobson, said “Raising money for community charities is close to our hearts at Slimming World Blidworth Group, and we think it’s something special to be involved in. I’m really proud of my Super Slimmers for pulling together to help the Cornwater Clubs whilst losing weight, getting healthier and having some fun at the same time!”

The Cornwater Clubs, which

support older people from the North Nottinghamshire area and have members from Blidworth, aim to prevent social isolation.

Chairman Dr Peter Rose, said “The slimmers have achieved a fantastic result both in terms of their weight loss and the support they have given our charity.

The money will be used to continue to provide a variety of stimulating activities for our members to enjoy together, helping to alleviate the social isolation of being at home alone” The Cornwater Clubs run four days a week and offer a range of stimulating activities plus a two-course nutritionally balanced lunch. Farnsfield Local News Farnsfield & District RBL The Branch annual BBQ in June, was the most successful ever, so much so we ran out of food and beer! The success of the event meant that we raised over £3,000 for the benefit of serving and ex-service personnel. Our next ‘event’ was at Rufford Country Park where we had a stall at the ‘Trent to Trenches’ weekend which had WWI as its theme, with re-enactment groups giving us an idea of what life was like for the troops in 1914.

A total of over £170 to the Poppy Appeal was raised over the two days.

On 6th July, at the memorial site and 70 years on to the day, together with Nick Linney, DL, a contingent of cadets from 1260 Squadron Air Training Corps and 40 other members of the public, we attended the annual service for the crew of a Halifax bomber which crashed near Farnsfield in 1944 on its way back from a raid on the V1 site at Croixdalle in France, killing all 7 crewmen. For the first time the service, which was conducted by Rev Peter Graves, included the Canadian National Anthem in memory of the one Canadian member of the crew, the bomb aimer Flight Sergeant John Godin.

A new Rotary year, a new President – Laura Harmer our 43rd President with Mary Brown Immediate past President. It is a privilege to be President of the Club. During my year we will continue supporting local organisations and groups. We will put a greater emphasis on building awareness locally of what Rotary is and what it can offer to individuals in society

and to businesses locally.

On Sunday 3rd August, the branch joined other village groups in a procession through the village to a service at St Michael’s Church, to commemorate the start of WWI. The procession was led by the band of the Seaforth Highlands from Mansfield and included schoolchildren dressed as nurses and wounded soldiers.

During this busy month the Club visited the Dukeries Age Concern and left them with the Youth Leadership Certificate that he was awarded following the Youth Opportunities weekend. He took part, with other young people in challenging tasks such as abseiling, orienteering and developing leadership skills.

by Rotary were the SEN students at the Dukeries Academy. They were given a £200 donation to help costs of enabling students to experience new situations on

a cheque for £85. They are hoping this can go towards seating in the garden.

The month of August sees the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War 1. It was called the ‘Great War’ and was hoped to be the war that would end all wars. Sadly that has not been the case, we only have to look on the news or read a newspaper to discover more conflicts are happening. Yet we must not forget.

As many communities gather together to mark this anniversary it is important to note that this is not to glorify the past. We must not forget because there were great sacrifices made, we must not forget because there are lessons that we badly need to learn.

The Jewish people to this day remember God bringing them out of slavery in Egypt over 3,000 years ago and as they remember they are also ‘remembering’, That is coming back together as a
