W

elcome to this autumnal edition of your Sherwood Community Newsletter. This month sees the clocks go back - booooo! So it gets darker earlier until after Christmas. With the darker nights we get Halloween, bonfire night and of course the Christmas lights.

As a treat this month, not a trick! We bring you the potted history of Halloween with the mixture of Celtic, Christian and Pagan beliefs evolving with tradition and superstition - great stuff.

We had a winner of the Blidworth and WW1 book from the local authors Dale and John Smallwood - see the panel to the right.

Also recently was the 2nd Horticultural show at the Blidworth Miners Welfare. There is a full page of photos and comments fro the event. Next year’s promises to be even bigger.

Also getting a make over is the looking good page. We have focussed on health and beauty, with a small mix of food and fashion to give our lady readers a page to dwell on.

The Sherwood has also launched a new facebook page and a twitter account to keep right up to date and will be maintained by Editor in Chief Diane. More details on later pages.

Local fans of football can keep up with the local teams inside the back page. If you have a team we can add details for - football or other sport - let us know as we like to publicise local events.

There is reported to be a bumper harvest of nuts and berries so get your foraging hats on and venture into the Sherwood area countryside (public land) and pick a free treat of blackberries or chestnuts.

House & Home Reluctant Gardener: October

Now, as summer slips into autumn, we are seeing cooler days and nights, so lots to tidy up and sort in the garden.

Trees are shutting down, so start to rake up fallen autumn leaves once a week. Get the compost bin working full time. Don’t forget gutters should be cleaned of moss and soil. Get someone to help if you are not good on ladders.

Aerate the lawn after the last mowing of the lawns and trim hedges in lightly in protected or mild areas. Rake out moss and dead grass and sow seed over bare patches.

If the lawn is worn out beyond repair, then now is the time to renovate or create new grass areas by laying turf.

Consider a final effort to keep chafer bugs at bay by employing a professional treatment.

Above all enjoy the last pleasant days of the year before the frosts start and we batten down the hatches for the onset of the winter season.

Any perennials that have died down can be cut back to allow for new buds to form ready for next spring.

Divide those rhubarb crowns and perennials you want to propagate for next year – harvest late stems for a winter warming crumble or freeze for a later date.

Lift up frost threatened plants and move them into the greenhouse and frost protect those difficult to move like tree ferns. Remember, close the greenhouse night and the temperatures start to dip. Have a check on the heating to make sure it is serviced and working ok.

Dig over the vegetable patch and plant out spring cabbages – keep an eye on the late broccoli and brussels sprouts as this year the slugs have been busy and you don’t want your crops to be attacked as a pre-Christmas dinner!

Tree fruits and nuts like apples, pears, grapes, hazelnuts and chestnuts can be harvested. Take a trip to pick chestnuts in Sherwood’s local forests – ask locals who will tell you where good trees can be found.

Prune climbing roses and start to cut back annual vines like the Russian vine. Take care to avoid damaging insects or birds living in the old growth.

Put all the ingredients into a pan.

Heat slowly, stirring until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves.

Bring to the boil. Cover the pan, and boil gently for 2 minutes.

Uncover the pan, and continue to boil for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Test by dropping a little of the mixture into a cup of cold water. It should seperate into brittle threads.

Pour into a buttered 15cm / 6in square tin, and leave to set.

Turn out on a board, and break up with a small hammer.

• Praise is a great motivator. Praise their work and their efforts.

• If there are continuing problems with homework get help!

Talk to your child’s teacher. Some children have problems seeing the board and may require glasses; others may need additional support in class.

• Are you unsure of up to date terminology? Do you dread grid methods and chunking questions? Don’t be afraid to ask if these methods can be explained to you. Many schools offer advice sessions for Parents.

Finally, try to make your home a stress free environment and homework nights will be much more pleasurable for all concerned.

Guinness World Record Attempt.

he Joseph Whitaker School Young Engineers Club, on the 4th of October 2014, are hosting an event at the Rolls Royce Site in Hucknall, where they are attempting to beat the world land speed record for a model rocket-powered car, which stands currently at 287mph.

They have been working on this project for a year, building and testing new ideas and have achieved speeds of over 400 mph, so they are confident that they will officially break the record on the day. They presented this challenge and other projects they have worked on to the Prime Minister in March 2013 and again to HRH Duke of York in March 2014. This

Security & Safety Commissioner’s hopes for domestic abuse recovery start to take shape

A series of courses specially developed to help women cope with the aftermath of domestic abuse gets underway in Nottinghamshire last month, thanks to Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping.

Mr Tipping secured £228,175 in July from the Ministry of Justice’s PCC Competed Fund to pay for projects supporting women affected by domestic abuse. He has earmarked £125,000 of that sum to finance the Rights and Recovery project that includes five healthy relationship courses for women survivors in the city and ten in the county.

“Learning about healthy relationships is an important part of helping victims to cope with the effects of domestic abuse and recover from the harm they have experienced,” explained Deputy Commissioner Chris Cutland, who heads up the work for Mr Tipping on domestic abuse-related issues.

“Abuse behind closed doors in what should be the safety of home is traumatic, affecting not only the present but the future for many women who experience it,” she went on. “These courses are designed to enable survivors to reach a greater

Understanding what has happened is only part of the course.

Participants will also be shown how to recognise what is and what is not a healthy relationship, including recognition of the use of power and control.

“My hope is that the women who attend these courses will emerge with greater self-esteem and confidence so that they feel less isolated, more informed and more empowered about the choices they have,” the Deputy Commissioner said.

The Rights and Recovery project’s other groups include five healthy relationship programmes specifically aimed at South Asian women, older women, lesbian, bisexual and transgender women, and women with mental health and complex needs. Ten pilot therapeutic group courses are also part of project.

Women’s Aid Integrated Services was awarded the contract to deliver the courses with what has been described as an ‘excellent bid’ following a formal evaluation process. When the project finishes in March next year, the outcomes will be evaluated independently so that lessons learned can be used in the future. The courses were developed following research last year commissioned by the Commissioner to investigate what kind of help victims need.

Blidworth Miners Welfare Horticultural Show Captured in pictures - lovely weather Great Event

his was a fabulous family event, well organised & well attended throughout the day at Blidworth Welfare. There were over 40 stalls selling a large variety of items, including tombola. Also attending: Blidworth Cubs & Scouts with a Bouncy Castle, Michael Thompson’s Swingboats & Coconut Shy, Joseph Whitaker School’s Rampaging Chariots, Blidworth Fire Engine & Staff and ‘Blood’ Bikers. The Horticulture Show (Blidworth’s 1st ever), was held in the Function Room. After judging, the produce was auctioned off, raising £40, that was donated to Blidworth Oaks School towards their Polytunnel Plant Scheme.

We plan to repeat this event annually.

Hannah Wins Gold at British Triathlon Championships Hannah Shooter showed her pedigree when she took gold in the women’s sprint distance British Triathlon Championships at Liverpool.

The Mansfield triathlete and former European age-group gold medallist completed the 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run in 1 hour, 11 mins and 17 secs, over one minute ahead of the second placed athlete and two minutes up on the third placed woman.

alloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. Halloween is a shortening of All Hallows' Evening also known as Hallowe'en or All Hallows' Eve. Halloween is an ancient festival, which has its roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain (Sah-ween).

The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Celtic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter.

The ancient Celts believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc such as sickness or damaged crops.

The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which attracted bats to the area. It was believed by the Celts that on the night of 31st October, ghosts of their dead would revisit the mortal world and large bonfires were lit in each village in order to ward off any evil spirits that may also be at large. In England, the day of fires became 5th November (Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes), the anniversary of the Gunpowder plot of 1605, but its closeness to Halloween is more than a coincidence. Halloween and Bonfire Night have a common origin they both originated from pagan times, when the evil spirits of darkness had to be driven away with noise and fire.

Part of the history of Halloween is Halloween costumes. Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them. This gave rise to people “guising” or wearing costumes to avoid being recognised by past spirits abroad on that night.

Trick-or-treating, is an activity for children on or around Halloween in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, "Trick or treat?"

The "trick" part of "trick or treat" is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Halloween. It has become socially expected that if one lives in a street with children one should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.

Jack o' Lanterns: It was the Irish who brought the tradition of the Jack O'Lantern to America. The practice of carving Jack-o'lanterns goes back to the Irish legend of Jack, a lazy but shrewd farmer who tricked the Devil into a tree, then refused to let the Devil down unless the Devil agreed to never let Jack into Hell.

The story goes that the Devil agreed, but when Jack died, he was too sinful to be allowed into Heaven, and the Devil wouldn't let him into Hell. So, Jack carved out one of his turnips, put a candle inside it, and began endlessly wandering the Earth for a resting place. He was known as Jack of the Lantern, or Jack-O'-Lantern.

Superstitions associated with Halloween It was believed to be the night when the barrier between the living world and that of the spirits was at its weakest. In the old days people lit bonfires to ward away evil spirits and in some places they used to jump over the fire to bring good luck.

Now we light candles in pumpkin lanterns called Jack-o'-Lanterns. This is intended to scare away evil spirits from the home.

Halloween was also a time to honour the dead, and divine the future.

It is smaller than the latter bird and is a buff-pink colour and sometimes you may notice a very pale blue hue to some feathers. The adults have a black half-collar at the nape, hence its name. Also, look more closely and you will see that this bird has a red iris. Juveniles have a brown eye and their collar is not as obvious.

They are one of our commonest birds but recently BTO Garden BirdWatchers have recorded a slight decline in this species.

This could be explained by the increase of the larger and more dominant Woodpigeon in our gardens or disease such as trichomonsis which also affects Greenfinches. Also, the Collared Dove is often predated by the Sparrowhawk.

Collared Doves share their duties when preparing their nests.

The male collects the sticks needed for the nest but the female actually constructs it. It is usually just made up of a pile of sticks and may be built in a tree or just on a ledge. Only two eggs are laid and the male will incubate them during daytime and the female will incubate them at night time. The feeding of the young is shared.

Friends of Tippings Wood

A

t the moment there are no volunteers prepared to keep the Friends of Tippings Wood group going. Greenwood are organising task days so look out for information on the entrances to Tippings Wood. Recently various agencies had a walk round the woods to investigate several reports of anti social behaviour and identify problems areas to target. Whilst certain reports remain unsubstantiated, there is a small amount of vandalism and litter and of course motor bikes are an ongoing problem countrywide. However, the police regularly patrol which has resulted in several bikes being ceased and youngsters in cars being moved on. New signage is on order with the reminder to call 101, the non emergency police number, if you see anything at all you consider detrimental to our community woodland and its users. The police may not attend but it is important to log every incident so we have a clearer picture. Would you be interested in being part of a new Friends of Tippings wood group.

Tippings Wood has for a long time been cared for and kept tidy on a regular basis by members of the community. Now, due to ill health, members have decided to call it a day. Nottinghamshire County Council has minimal resources to pay for contractors and can only bring conservation volunteers to work on the site once a month. Recently members and a few friends went on a coach trip

into Yorkshire to Scarborough and fortunately picked a nice day. Apart from taking a long time to get there due to various road diversions, we all had a very nice day out with a good dose of Fish and Chips.

Coming up soon is a social evening at our HQ at Rookwood.

Blidworth Local News Blidworth Parish Council (BPC Blidworth in Bloom – Section A - Another successful year – our bloom co-ordinator received lots of praise from the judges for the interesting tour showing off the many activities taking place, with horticultural features, artwork & engagement with residents & groups living/working in Blidworth, with contributions from School, Scouts & the Fox & Hounds. The overall quality of floral displays, particularly at the Memorial Garden, Fire Station, Leisure Centre, Forest Folk Corner & the Fox & Hounds were well received. They were pleased to see that Dale Lane Allotments are still well maintained & also impressed with the individual efforts made at Sherwood Community & Methodist Churches. In the main on the tour route the grass verges were being well maintained & our floral towers were very impressive.

Achievements: Section B. School for their excellent wildlife & natural habitat areas including the pond, bird feeders, wild flower plantings & butterfly garden. They were particularly impressed with the new vegetable garden, poly-tunnel & composters. Once again our heritage shone through with the School Murals, (rockings cradle art work, Pit wheel with town mosaic & the War memorial). Overall the town was generally clean & litter free & was good to see the community getting involved with litter picking etc.

Section C. BJ’s for their hanging baskets, B7Q for their donated plants, school children for helping Christine plant flower beds, Scouts for their wildflower bed @ Dale Lane & our local Lions & Rotary groups for supporting bus.

Future Development: suggestions made – try to show residents gardens, encourage more shop owners / businesses doing their own thing: display a wildflower display outside school or entrance to Dale Lane Allotments or small pieces of waste land / hard to grow area around town. Try to engage local residents / businesses to help look after / water some of the displays and /or developing water catchment sites to make watering easier.

Bards at Blidworth

Recently we decided to have a poetry workshop which was stimulated by tai chi to see what poems might emerge from the experience. One of our bards - Stevie-Leigh Townsend - led us gently through some movements.

Focussing on breathing, as well as making slow movements, was relaxing for body and mind. It is an exercise that can be done by virtually anyone of any age and you don’t have to be super fit to do it - in fact, people in wheel chairs should find it suitable. (People with specific disabilities or conditions may have to check first with their GP.) What I found was that the fluidity of movement allowed for the mind to stop racing round with a multitude of stressful concerns.

It was almost like meditation.

Following the session we turned back to pen and paper and some delightful poems emerged with ease. The following seems to be in de-clutter mode!

All patients are welcome to attend our meetings to learn more about how important patients contributions are to GPs’ in helping them understand their needs in respect of healthcare locally. So as a PPG we try to give local people a voice on healthcare locally. We discuss ways of improving provision at the practice and we are involved in increasing patient’s awareness locally about improving healthcare or managing particular conditions. This year we will have our own newsletter. That will be circulated around the villages and in the surgeries. So keep a lookout.

In addition to the PPG we have a virtual Patient Reference Group.

Blidworth Local News Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society Last Month the Society’s 41 members and guests heard Peter Hammond talk about his career, ‘On the Buses’. Peter worked for various bus companies in the county to becoming a fully qualified driver. He was passionate about buses and although officially retired he still drives a London Route-master bus for weddings & celebrations.

After the break, Alan Higgins gave a presentation on recently acquired photographs of old Blidworth.

During the evening, the Society’s book on the 1st World War was available to members and guests. The book is packed

with stories of the Parish of Blidworth from before the Great War, through the war and afterwards up to the coming of the colliery in 1926. Many of the photographs have never been published before and there is much to discover about life in this Nottinghamshire village one hundred years ago. The cost is £12.50 including first class postage and can be ordered from dalesmallwood@ntlworld.com Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, 7th October, when Mr W Taylor talks about, ‘The Dukeries Railways Routes’. Our own railway station at Rainworth was connected to this system and the coal from both Blidworth and Rufford Collieries went to market via the Dukeries tracks.

New Rotarian Derek Storton & President Laura Harmer Some of your readers may have seen Rotarians helping collect food in Tesco’s for the Foodbank in Ollerton recently.

Lynn Matthew manager of the Foodbank gave a very interesting, informative and thought provoking talk to members of our Club. The foodbanks are set up and overseen by the Trussell Trust who are partners with churches and communities and they are run and managed by volunteers. Donated food donated from schools, churches, businesses and individuals is sorted and checked and packed into boxes. Each foodbox contains a minimum of three days nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food.

A person or family in crisis have been

identified by frontline care professionals who assess individual need and make sure it is genuine.

Vouchers for food are issued by professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers, the police or CAB and this is handed in for a food-box a the foodbank.

Ollerton foodbank is also looking for funding to roll our ‘Eat Well, Spend Less’ courses that teach people how to cook when on a low budget.

The question is do we? Rotarian Stella Herbert a member of our club is a First Aid Trainer and our club members are very fortunate that Stella is now putting us all through our paces. We have now spent two evening learning the basic facts, what to observe and look for if we come across someone in a life threatening position.

Stella gives her training sessions a lighted hearted approach to what can be very difficult decisions that anyone might have to make. Often it is a family member that requires help and club members families have already benefited from this training.

During Stella’s last session we learnt and practiced on dummies how to give cardiac resuscitation and give abdominal thrusts an emergency thrusts for clearing a blockage from the airway of an adult or child over one year old who is choking.

This is also known as the Heimlich Manoeuvre.

Sherwood Forest Brass band, based at Clipstone welfare, offer free tuition to learn a brass instrument.

When you next have a pair that you no longer require, please find an opportunity to take them in to one of these two collection points. They really are still capable of making a big difference to someone’s whole day to day life experience.

The Eco Dresses will be revealed at the Miss Mansfield Final on 11th October, with the best dress being awarded a prize.

The Eco Dress Section forms part of the Miss Mansfield Final and is being supported by the Cornwater Club Charity Shop on Queen Street. Within this section all the finalists are asked to consider recycling and the environment and produce an outfit using a variety of different materials and clothing. The Cornwater Charity Shop has provided all the finalists with a voucher to spend in the shop towards their Eco Dress.

Local Church News Church Article When we were on holiday in Wales we came across this family of swans on the river Dysinni. We saw them several times as we came across this stretch of water and they were always very close and it seemed that they stayed close together all the time.

Now I think I know that swans pair up forever and always remain together throughout the whole of their lives, perhaps some of you bird watchers may tell me different as I may be wrong on this fact. However, what made me think was how close they were to each other. The goslings stayed close and if one of them wandered off either mum or dad soon rounded them up and brought them back into the fold. To get this photograph I had to creep down the bank, and just after this shot the male swan started to get agitated and came out of the water to warn me off. I retreated quickly! It made me think that this is how God is with each of us, he wants us in His fold under His protection but unlike these swans, it is possible to escape from God’s care and wander off on our own. You see He has given us free will and if we choose we can go our own way and try to make it on our

own but it breaks God’s heart when we shun His care and love but how He rejoices when we return under His wing. These swans so obviously cared for their family by their own natural instinct but God loves you each with an infinite and never-ending love. Why don’t you test it and see what God can do for you.

Chernobyl Children LIfeline

revious issues of the Sherwood have told how the charity brings children from Belarus to our part of the country.

This summer 12 children stayed in host family homes.

None had ever left their own area visited another country.

The children come from Molotkovichi in the Brest region of Belarus. Everything we did was new to them including seeing the sea in fact some of the children could not understand why the sea was salty and asked if we had a sea with sugar.

Their comment on seeing the sea was “WOW”. The children come for three weeks for respite and fresh air as they all live within the area of Chernobyl.

We would like to advertise YOUR business if you offer an emergency service.

I am now asking you if it is possible for you to host a child or two for three weeks from 15th February to 8th March next year.

These children will have never been for respite before. If you host you will receive 24 hour support also a support family at any time if you need one. The children go on local visits in our area and you and your own family are encouraged to join them at no cost. All children are aged 8-11 years. The gender of the child will be your decision.

Please see the photographs of the children who came this summer. I do hope you could give some thought if you could host for us as it does give the children a good respite and fulfilment for you.
