WW1 Centenary
The 4th of August 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the day Britain entered one of the costliest conflicts in history – the First World War – with fighting continuing until the 11th of November 1918, Armistice Day.
“The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime”. Sir Edward Grey, Foreign Secretary, uttered
these words on the eve of Britain officially entered the First World War. Exactly 100 years later the RBL are inviting millions of individuals, households and companies to join together in a national moment of reflection. The RBL are encouraging everyone in the UK to turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm on 4 August 2014 – leaving only a single light or candle for this symbolic act of reflection and hope. On that night we will remember more than a million Commonwealth Service personnel who lost their lives in the First World War.

2 Hello from The Sherwood Newsletter Editor: Andy Jones a local resident with a local business
Welcome to the July edition of the Sherwood. This issue sees another set of roadworks commencing in our local villages. Most folks who live in Rainworth will be aware of the drainage problems on the Sherwood park estate and the many attempts to fix the problem. Now we have the St Jude’s project that will take 5-6 months to complete and at various stages will close Southwell road. Hopefully the starting of this set of works hasn’t clashed too much with the works at Blidworth we let you know about last month. August will see the commencement of many commemorative events looking back and remembering the 1st World War. It is worth visiting the Royal British Legion site to check out the events locally if you wish to take part in this heart felt look at the terrible consequences that war creates and the reasons we should be thankful of the sacrifices that people made.
Andy Jones, Editor Churches Commemoration of the start of WW1 Saturday 2nd August 10.00am-12.00noon St Simon & St Jude's church Rainworth will be open for quiet reflection with a short film to watch and an opportunity to light candles. At 12.00 noon there will be a short act of Commemoration at the memorial in the church grounds. Saturday 9th August 10.00am - 12 noon Blidworth Methodist church will be open for quiet reflection with a short film to watch and an opportunity to light candles. At 12.00 noon there will be a short act of Commemoration at the memorial on Main Street. Road Closure in Rainworth 30th June for 6 months (Revised) Severn Trent Water - Sewerage improvement System “St Jude’s Way Flood Alleviation” Larger pipes are to be installed in Southwell Road - meaning closures on Kirklington Road, Warsop Lane and Southwell Road - restricting through traffic. It is expected that Kirklington Road will be shut throughout the school holidays (5 weeks) followed by the closure of Southwell Road north of Warsop Lane for 4-5 months into September. Diversion routes are signed and footpaths will remain open.

Sherwood News and Information Love is a Many Splendid Thing! Love is a many splendid thing. It’s a winder that happens in the early spring and at other times too. People have died for it, fought wars over it and written thousands of songs about it. But what happens if you cannot find it? Even worse what happens after years of marriage, you suddenly lose it? It is not easy, you can frequent places of pleasure, clubs, pubs, etc... On your own - if you are brave! Or you can sit alone waiting for that knock on the door. Friends can be well meaning and supportive, but often their efforts wear thin after a time. They will only give so much. There is nothing to replace having that SPECIAL PERSON of your own in your life, especially on your birthday, going to a party, christening or wedding. At EASTER and CHRISTMAS too. These special times become even more special when you have someone precious to share them with. So where can people turn to if Cupid is out of arrows, or needs a new pair of specs to improve his aim? Matchmates could hold the key to unlocking the mysteries of meeting your true love. Margaret has been pairing people virtually all her life and is keen to put paid to the stigma attached to dating agencies.

Dreams Imagine the scene, standing under flashing lights, being deafened by the latest dance tunes, you see what you believe to be the man or woman of your dreams strutting their stuff on the dance floor, suddenly everything becomes a blur, your whole being is focussed purely on this picture of perfection in motion. After hours of deliberation and a few drinks, you make the first move, how can you be sure that Cupid’s arrow has flown the right course? Everything may go fine on the initial meeting, but once outside the security of the social scene, things could suddenly turn sour. When meeting a complete stranger, people have no idea what sort of person they are. They take regular steps, and take a huge gamble based normally, purely on looks, that sheer physical attraction does not necessarily make for a good choice. If you know a bit more about the object of your heart’s desire, it might give you a better and safer way to meet someone. Many people have not got the time to search for an ideal partner. Matchmates offers profiles to members for consideration

NAME THAT TOON! Cartoonist Francis Lowe visited Junior Art Club in June and led a really memorable session. Francis who teaches animation at Coventry University and worked at Universal Studios in Hollywood taught the group how to draw cartoons using simple shapes - circles, squares, rectangles and triangles. Then we created our own characters using these techniques and made a fabulous display wall - pop in to the library and see it for yourself! Junior Art Club takes place on the first Saturday of the month, 10.30am - 12pm at Blidworth Library and is open to children of all ages and their mums, dads and grandparents too. The next session is on July 5th, then we have a break for summer so the next session after that will be September 6th. Hope to see you there. For more information contact jonrea@hotmail.com

Provado Lawn Grub Killer has now been BANNED! Owing to the level of concern across Europe about the collapse of bee populations, the European Commission has restricted the use of pesticides which have been linked to the decline in bee populations.
So how can Four Seasons Lawn Care still treat lawns for Chafer Grubs? It is only Provado Lawn Grub Killer that has been banned because it was a liquid product which was available to the public. When Provado was applied on to lawns, there was a danger it could drift on to adjacent pollinating plants if not applied carefully. As a result bees could be put at risk. The treatment we use is a professional insecticide and is a granular product, only available to professional users, which is much easier to target on to the lawn area only, and is far less likely to drift than a liquid product. Merit Turf is a professional-grade product and is not available to the general public. Our employees hold the Certificates of Competence in the Safe Handling of Pesticides required by law to apply this.
For a FREE, no obligation quotation, or for more information please give us a call on: 01623 402509 or 07738 571971 e-mail – contact@fourseasonslawncare.info www.fourseasonslawncare.info
Reluctant Gardener for July LAWNCARE: Mow the lawn weekly and add the clippings to compost heap. In summer, lawns may be infested by ants. Brush out nests, prior to mowing. Isolated weeds can be removed by digging out or by using a spot-on weed killer. HOUSEPLANT CARE Put indoor plants outside on the patio during the summer. Ventilate and shade your conservatories to prevent sun scorch to leaves. Check plants for red spider mite, glasshouse white fly, mealy bug and scale insect. JOBS IN THE GARDEN Deadhead faded flowers to encourage longer flowering. Tackle perennial weeds when growing. Dig out or apply a weed killer Fill gaps in borders with flowering annuals. Hoe borders to prevent weeds from establishing. Check for first signs of vine
weevil damage. JOBS TO DO IN THE GREENHOUSE Ventilate the greenhouse on sunny days and damp the floor to increase the humidity. Check for vine weevil larvae in containers. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN Start to sow Cabbage, turnips, fennel and autumn-winter salads. Carrots can be sown, beware of carrot fly and thin existing seedlings. Change to high potash feed for container grown fruit.
Water tomatoes and Peppers regularly to avoid blossom end rot. Watch out for potato blight and tomato blight. Hoe off weeds in dry weather. WILDLIFE & BIRD CARE Do not prune roses that produce hips by deadheading. Keep birdbaths topped up with water. Avoid chunky foods that could choke young fledglings – especially peanuts. Use wildlife friendly slug
pellets if chemical control is needed. Watch for adult frogs and toads leaving ponds – certainly when it rains OTHER ADVICE Collect grey water for watering containers and baskets. Hang sticky insect traps in greenhouses. Clear algae, blanket weed and debris from ponds and keep them topped up. In a dry spell treat timber structures and buildings with animal friendly preservatives or paint.larger pot. Happy Gardening, Andy

Musikverein Limbach to visit New Ollerton in August Once again the band from Limbach, Germany will be visiting Ollerton and district as guests of the musicians of the Dukeries Academy. During their stay they will be taking part in a joint concert at the Academy and will perform at Rufford Country Park. The link with the German band has been in existence since 1978 and many Dukeries musicians have taken part in visits to Germany and have benefited from the hospitality given by German families. Homestays are required for the band some of whom are school age and so would be best suited to a family with schoolchildren of secondary school age. There are also a number of adults who are hoping to enjoy similar hospitality. Many of these adults have supported us on our visits to Limbach.

www.haywood-oaks.co.uk New Local Dog Re-homing Centre Opens Having built a specially designed modern kennels which have now been welcoming dogs for eight years, we have now converted our original kennel building (separate from the new kennels) to become temporary accommodation for dogs who have lost their owners and looking for a new home. We started to welcome lost dogs on the 1st April this year and already we have 21 dogs needing a new home, ranging from little lively terriers to big German Shepherds. Sometimes dogs have micro-chips which is great but our hopes to find their owners are soon dashed when the chip details are out of date or maybe the owner has moved or changed their phone number. Tim says “It’s really important if your dog is chipped to remember to update his or her details when contact details change” From 2015 it will be a legal obligation for all dogs to be micro chipped which can be done by vets, the Dogs Trust or we can do it here too. If you ever lose your dog or hear of someone losing their dog please ring us, as we are now part of a comprehensive local network to help reunite lost dogs with their owners. If you are able to offer a new home for one of our variety of dogs looking for a loving home then please give us a ring and we would be very pleased to chat with you. Local News - Blidworth Focus Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society Our speaker for the June 1st meeting was Ian Morgan. Ian has been to the Society before and is always appreciated. The subject was, ‘Within Site of the Gibbet’. Someone found guilty of murder in the 18th and early 19th century was normally hanged but they were not allowed to be buried. Their body was often covered in tar, chained inside a cage and hoisted 30 feet in the air and hung on a post: the ‘gibbet’. Often placed in a position near the scene of the murder but always in a spot that could be seen from a long way away, the body was left to rot away slowly over the years; a reminder of the fate
members and guests enjoyed the session.
awaiting anyone thinking of foul deeds. Ian’s story covered the harsh and brutal realities of children working in local mills, poisoning by jealous neighbours in Derbyshire and other local murders. He received enthusiastic applause after which he was available to answer questions. During the coffee break members and guests were invited to view another selection of photographs from our archives. After the break, Alan Higgins broke from tradition and spoke on the dialect of Blidworth 50 years ago. There was much audience participation and

Farnsfield & District RBL
“We would like to express our gratitude for all those who supported the branch at our recent BBQ at Old Manor Farm, Farnsfield – the branch members who worked so hard to organise the event, the public who attended, the donors of the wonderful raffle prizes, the entertainers and of course Mr Philip Pedley for allowing us to ‘invade’ his garden. Our next “appearance” is on the weekend of 28/29th June, when we will have a stall at the Trent to Trenches event at Rufford Country Park. The event will commemorate the start of the First World War and will include re-enactors who will endeavour to show us what life was like in 1914. On Sunday 3rd August we will join other village groups in a WWI commemoration parade, starting at 3.30pm at The Plough and walking down Main Street to St Michael’s Church where a family service will follow at 4pm. We will then adjourn to Farnsfield
Rotary Club of Sherwood Forest Ferrets we all know run up trouser legs! The reality is a bit different. Neil Rose works with ferrets in his free time related a very different story during an evening with us. Ferrets it was explained play an important role in controlling the population of rabbits so protecting our food supply. Thousands of tonnes of agricultural crops are destroyed each year but with the aid of ferrets and modern technology ferrets are able to search 16 feet underground in rabbit warrens without being lost. These amazingly trained working ferrets Billy & Bruce were fun and very friendly – that is if you like handling small furry creatures!
Neil Rose, President Mary, Assistant Governor Eric & President Elect Laura with Ferrets Billy & Bruce Life for the Internees at Boughton Camp established
in 1941 was vividly brought to life by Irene Miller, Chairman of Ollerton of Yesteryear, when she gave a talk at one of our Wednesday evening meetings. The history and wealth of knowledge about the camp and camp life was fascinating. The War Department camp opened in 1940 and the 50 hectare site was divided in two with German Prisoners of War housed in the larger camp on the north side and Italian, Polish and Irish across the road. We saw pictures of the band the internees formed and the celebrations they had at Christmas. The Italian prisoners made jewellery and local girls would be pleased to wear it. The prisoners were contained within a wire outer fence but were in no hurry to escape back to Germany or elsewhere because they would have returned to fighting. In August Ollerton of Yesteryear are putting on an exhibition at the Dukeries Academy and it would be well worth a visit.
Cricket Club for a BBQ and games. The children are being asked to dress up as wounded soldiers, nurses or even poppies. All are welcome, so please come and join us to commemorate and remember. There is no better time than now to consider joining The Royal British Legion – membership is open to anyone and you don’t have to be ex-service to join. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm at Farnsfield Cricket Club – look forward to seeing you there! “ Trevor Wilds, Chairman, Farnsfield & District Branch (BR0264) The Royal British Legion We meet on the first Tuesday of every month at 7.30pm at Farnsfield Cricket Club and you don’t have to be ex-service to join.” C/O Trevor Wilds, Chairman, Farnsfield & District Branch (BR0264) Royal British Legion. 01623 882521

Church Article I live in Blidworth. As anybody who has driven through Blidworth recently will know, the Main Street is about to be closed for two weeks for resurfacing. The MARR road is also closed as they fill in the enormous holes that threaten to swallow small cars like mine. It’s going to be difficult. The shortest journey will take some planning; just taking something in a vehicle from side of the village to the other. A simple drive to Rainworth to get to school will need thinking about; just what will the traffic on those single track back lanes be like. The traffic lights on the A60 are bad enough on a normal morning, but lots more people are going to be using them now. How much more time do you need to allow to get to Mansfield, or to KingsMill now? Little things we take for granted, simple journeys we can do blindfold, need to be thought about again. We don’t like change. We don’t like our routine, or routes, being changed for us. It’s not too bad when its our choice but we don’t like it being forced on us. Now for the really bad news. Get used to it. My Grandad was born in 1890, just before the car was invented, and before he was 80 there were men on the moon. The world of today is very different from that most of us grew up in. And the rate of change gets faster all the time. So, we hold on to what feels safe. Some try and wish the world back to how it was, even though it was never as lovely as rosetinted memory makes it. Certain politicians like to promise it can be brought back, just vote for them. But it can’t. Or we can welcome the change. The world is more colourful, more vibrant than it ever was growing up in the 60’s and 70’s. We eat food from all over the world, we have more than three television channels, we can see loved ones in Australia on our tablets, we can text and phone, we live longer and healthier…. The churches have just celebrated Pentecost, where God changes us and our lives. Embrace the change. David Greenwood (01623 491474)
