2 Hello from The Sherwood Newsletter Editor: Andy Jones a local resident with a local business

Welcome to the June edition of the Sherwood Newsletter. As I type this intro, I am amazed that the warm spell in May has dissolved and it is back to wet and cool conditions outside.... Not what I anticipated, but at least the frosts have finished. We had two competitions last month and the lucky winners are announced in the inside pages. Well done to the winners and thanks to all the entrants - who all got the right answers.

This months big headache is the impending road closure between Blidworth and Rainworth. We have put more details of diversion routes and maps for you below. I think many travellers who don’t live locally will not be pleased to encounter the complete closure of the B6020 through the main street in Blidworth and I expect the A614 and A60 to be quite busy as a result of diversions. The road has needed repair for a long time and it will hopefully be better once it is completed.

The Roadworks will have a day off on the Sunday 22nd June as there is a 6-a-side cricket tournament at Blidworth Welfare

Road Closure Notification at Blidworth

Saturday the 21st June 2014 to Friday the 4th of July 2014 During weekdays the road will be closed from 09:00 to 15:00 During the weekend the closure times vary as follows: Saturday 21st June - Road closure from 07:00 to 19:00 Sunday 22nd June - ROAD OPEN - NO WORKS PLANNED Saturday 28th June - Road Closure from 07:00 to 23:59 Sunday the 29th June - Road Closure from 07:00 to 23:59 No through route Rainworth to Blidworth during hours of closure Out of the hours listed, the road will be opened for vehicle traffic.

Waste collections along Mansfield Rd will not be during the hours of 9:00-15:00 in the week, they will alter their routines to suit.

A permanent Lafarge Tarmac operative will be at the pedestrian crossing to ensure safe passage to the Pharmacy / Surgery for pedestrians in motorised scooters and wheelchairs.

Due to the 6 a side cricket tournament at the Welfare on the 22nd, carriageway resurfacing operations will be suspended for that day.

At the end of the shift on Saturday the 21st Lafarge Tarmac will make safe the site and stand down until Monday the 23rd.

Longer shifts on the following Saturday and Sunday (28th and 29th) may take place to get back onto schedule if needed.

Mark Spencer MP Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt visits Sherwood It was great to have Jeremy Hunt, the Secretary of State for Health, here to visit Pathfinders Specialist and Complex Care Centre in Ollerton. Pathfinders is a facility that provides day care and respite facilities for those aged 18-65 with specialist or complex needs. It is a not for profit organisation which works with Social Services and the NHS. The staff at Pathfinders very kindly showed Mr Hunt and me around the facility and I know that he was very impressed with the way that Pathfinders was working with the NHS to deliver such exceptional care in a professional way.

A Change of Leadership for Blidworth Oaks Primary School

This year, Blidworth Oaks Primary has welcomed a new Head Teacher, Mr Shaun Walker. Everyone involved with the school has been working hard to create a community school that challenges and motivates all of its children in the classroom and out of it.

The school has developed a set of values that we teach the children to live in everything they do.

They are: • Aspiration • Inspiration • Integrity • Responsibility • Resilience • Inclusion • Respect Our children have really taken on board these values and every week teachers nominate a child for an ‘Integrity’ award; for children who have shown good use of the values in school and the community.

We recently gave some community ‘value points’ to local shop owners to give to our children who showed our values whilst out in Blidworth.

This year has seen a new record for attendance at Blidworth Oaks! The children who are the top attendees each term are invited to ‘Attendance Camp’. This is a fantastic reward where the children are invited to camp at school for the night with a team of teachers. We have a campfire, bed time stories and

Brighter Futures Education Feature by Jill Bator Top Tips for Time Management With GCSE and A Level examinations season here, one of the most crucial parts of studying and preparing for examinations is to help our children manage their time appropriately.

This isn’t always easy in a world of mobile communications, social networking and other distractions in the summer such as (hopefully) good weather and sporting events on the television. There are 1,440 minutes in a day which should give our children plenty of time to study in but with so many “time bandits” encroaching on ours and their time below are some top tips with help with time management: • Switch off mobile phones when studying. This also provides something to look forward after an hour or two of studying to see who has been in contact and what is happening in the world.

• Encourage children to get a good night’s sleep. It can be really difficulty to concentrate when tired and learning is therefore disrupted.

• Allocate a set time of the day for studying and stick to this.

• Let others know not to contact or disturb your children when they are studying.

• Work out with your child how long they can concentrate before needing a break. A suggestion is 30 minutes study followed by a 10 minute break.

• Encourage your child to use a record book or diary. Creating a calendar or programme of study will clearly identify the times for work and the times for fun.

• Find out the best time of day for learning for your child and help them plan their study calendar around this.

Remember, we are all individuals and learn in different ways so our children may not find the study techniques you used useful. We have also seen some great sporting victories for our Football, Rugby and Netball teams.

New to the school grounds, we now have a Poly Tunnel in our allotment area which is brilliant for outdoor learning. The Poly Tunnel has been so successful in harvesting some brilliant vegetable plants that we well to the public or to the school kitchen to use in school dinners!

This year we have struck up a partnership with a local charity called ‘Sporting HEARTS’ who have been kindly arranging several free trips for our children and their parents to go and watch Nott’s County Football Club. They have also started using the school premises for a ‘Saturday Sports Club’ which provides coaching in a number of different sports.

This year has seen a very exciting addition to our terml planner, the ‘Big Family Breakfast’, where all parents, carers and families of our pupils join us in the hall for breakfast all together as a community. It is a lovely atmosphere and our staff and families enjoy spending time together.

So as you can see Blidworth Oaks takes pride in being part of the Blidworth Community.

Reluctant Gardener for June June is a great time to plant annuals, perennials and all trees and shrubs! Plants and trees that provide colour in the month of June include Azaleas, Hydrangeas, Rhododendrons, Spireas, Butterfly Bush, Mock Orange and Golden Rain Tree.

Be on the lookout for these pests: Bagworms, Borers, Gypsy Moths, Lacebugs, Scale insects, Spider Mites, Caterpillars and slugs, especially after heavy rain.

It’s a great time to plant strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries.

Time to stake tomatoes and spray them if necessary to prevent disease problems.

After your vegetable garden is well established, June is the time to apply a fungicide to the lawn to control turf diseases such as brown patch, dollar spot and others.

Also look out for Chafer beetles.

Keep the lawn trimmed as long grass weakens the roots. You can move houseplants outside to the deck or patio and enjoy them outdoors for the summer. It is best to gradually introduce them to more direct sunlight to prevent the leaves from being burned. Feed houseplants with a good quality indoor plant food such If needed, re-pot root bound houseplants to a larger pot.

Arthur Radford continues to pour out gems like a prolific poetry machine- particularly about nature. He often slips in a quirky story at meetings of the little Bards group. He is something of a treasure among us.

Chris Pearson, who has already had his first collection of poems published (Entrance to Pleasure) has now been commissioned by Thynks Publications to have a second collection published and has also been writing in other genres such as stories for children.

George Wilcockson continues to amaze us with his lyrical poems. He overcomes his sight and hearing problems by memorising every poem that he composes in his mind. He is truly remarkable.

Gillian Baguley is currently putting together a collection of humorous poems. She is the Pam Ayers of Blidworth Bards!

Jan Bebbington writes very much in her own voice with clear and sustained imagery and delighting in her rich vocabulary.

We are sorry to have lost Stevie-Leigh to Lutterworth but congratulate her on her new teaching post and hope that she will continue to keep in touch. She is looking to produce a book of poems for children These and other bards continue to pour out some spectacular material and I will be looking forward to putting their poems into the Bards at Blidworth and Beyond 2014 book when it has been produced and published later this year.

fter two very good years raising money for charities Rainworth Riders will be setting off from The Venue car park on a cycle ride from Rainworth to Skegness. We will be setting off at 9.00AM on Saturday 12th July. The money raised from the cycle ride this year will be going to another local charity called MIND. This charity is at the top of ST John Street Mansfield.

Riders this year are Phil Alsop, Simon Dickie, Billy Learmonth, Lee Wilson, Jono Wilson, Alic Keay, Mick Trench, Keith Lyall, Steph Fish, Cliff Clarke After the cycle ride we will be having a presentation night at The Venue this will be on 18th October 2014 we have got live music on for the night and will let all the generous people that have supported us over the past few years know how much money they have raised for MIND.

Help Chernobyl Children

R

ecently the Newark & Sherwood link of the Chernobyl Children

lifeline charity hosted 11 children from Belarus. Children age 8 -11 stayed in our area. The children were very happy with the families and were very grateful for this chance to visit our country. The reason they come to us is so they can have fresh air and good food. They live in the Gomel area of Belarus in a town called Kalinkovichi.

They need respite from living in the area because the land they live on is contaminated by the nuclear fallout from Chernobyl in 1986. The children have weak immune systems and as they get older may have big problems with their health. Giving them a few weeks away from the area can improve their health.

We are now looking for hosts in your area to look after a child or two (the choice is yours) in the summer from 26th July -23rd August 2014. You can host for the full 4 weeks or just two weeks and then the child (ren) will stay with another host family. You will see a massive improvement with these children in just the short stay they are with you. They can stay with a family with or without children and also retired persons. The joy on their faces is something to behold.

There is full support throughout the period the children are with you in the way of 24/7 help with anything and a full complement of support hosts. Language is not a problem as we have a leader/interpreter and also learning the basics such as please, thank you, yes, no is fun as is them learning our language.

The child (ren) and you with your family will visit various places in the area such as swimming, parks and a host of other places.

No cost to these visits is made by yourselves for the child (ren) or for yourselves and your family. The pictures in this article are of children this winter enjoying days out with their host families.

Friends of Tippings Wood Volunteers Needed!!! Tippings wood is in desperate need of some TLC! We have a meeting scheduled in the next few weeks to hopefully form a new ‘Friends’ group, possible training courses and how to attract some younger, fitter volunteers The priority is to keep footpaths open and the site free of litter.

Please collect litter, even if it’s not yours. Greenwood will be arranging a ‘hit squad’ to deal with pressing issues.

Blidworth & Ravenshead PPG PPG - We a proactive group, working voluntarily for the practice, organising events to raise awareness of what is available for patients in Blidworth, Ravenshead and Rainworth. Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society Our May meeting on the 6th was a great success with our best ever attendance of members and visitors present to hear Michael Clarke talk about the Pentrich uprising of 1817. This was a time of industrial unrest when traditional work practices in the textile industry were being challenged with the introduction of machinery that could do the work of ten men in a tenth of the time. The upshot of the uprising, which saw an army of working men march on Nottingham from the village of Pentrich in Derbyshire, with the intention of taking the town over, was that three men were hung and beheaded and thirteen others, were sent to Australia for life, as convicts.

During the break, refreshments were served and the audience had a chance to talk and ask questions of Michael.

Local News - Blidworth Focus Rainworth & Blidworth Branch of the Royal British Legion

RAINWORTH VILLAGE HALL This is a final reminder that Rainworth Village Hall are putting on their 4th Summer Fun Day Event on Saturday 12th July 2014; they have accepted our offer of the use of our Stocks and Wet Sponges, I am sure that the younger children and some of the older people will enjoy throwing wet sponges at us poor devils locked in the stocks. To help them we will put on stall where we will have our PA system through which we will play Vinyl Records; these records will be for sale; we will also relay any messages and announcements from the stage in the hall.

FURTHER EVENTS. To remember the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1, the Churches together in Rainworth and Blidworth will be opening a church on the Saturday either side of the day (August 4th 1914) when Britain declared war on Germany. St. Simon & St. Jude’s in Rainworth on the 2nd August and Blidworth Methodist church on the 9th August. The church will be open from 10am until 12am and at 12am a short service will be held at the War memorial adjacent to the church.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Please note that we (Rainworth, Blidworth and District branch) would be happy to come to any event you are holding during the year with our stocks (and wet sponges) and a stall to raise not only money for our Poppy Appeal but also to raise your

awareness of the Royal British Legion. We are also willing to share any donations we collect with you, also our branch has a PA system that we could hire out to you for a very reasonable donation, please contact Jim below for details.

Meadow Road and New Road Pensioners Association - The Monday Club Hi everybody The club and members are all fine. Our recent trip to Retford market went very well and were lucky to stumble on very nice day (weather wise) Monday meetings go on as usual at our HQ at Rookwood close.

Our next trip takes us to Bakewell, market day obviously and on our way back home stopping off for a Carvery meal at The Moorend Pub somewhere in between Chatsworth and Sheffield well worth a visit.

Plans are ongoing to stage our annual summer fare watch this space for details.

The Cornwater Club

Say Cheese!

An expectant audience recently greeted the arrival of Webb Freckingham to Ravens Lodge.

Webb, from the Cheese Shop in Nottingham, gave a lively presentation and demonstrated the many uses of cheese.

He created a variety of dishes including the Blue Stilton Dip and a Colwick Cheese Pudding. The audience were then invited to sample the dishes and treat themselves to the cheese to enjoy at home.

Women’s Institute President , Mary Ledger, thanked Webb on behalf of the Cornwater Club and the Rainworth and Blidworth WI. The evening was a great success and raised £800, which will be divided equally between the two organisations. The Cornwater Club will put this money towards their appeal.

ewark & Sherwood D.C started an Initiative to get people fitter, In 2009.

Blidworth Walking Group started with 6 walkers and now has walked with over 150 people, on average the group have from 10-20 people every Sunday morning.

Overcoming Failure

All of us will have experienced failure at some time in our life.

Some will still be living with the consequences and the hurt of that failure – perhaps wondering whether they can ever get over it. Well, the good news is that your future is greater than your failure. We all fail at times, but that doesn’t mean we are ‘failures’. History is full of examples of people who have overcome failure – for example:Albert Einstein couldn’t speak until he was four years old, and didn’t read until he was seven. He was expelled from school and refused admittance to the Zurich Polytechnic School. Yet he went on to win the Nobel Prize and changed the face of modern physics.

Winston Churchill seemed so dull as a youth that his father thought he might be incapable of earning a living!

Thomas Edison’s first teacher described him as ‘addled’ and his father almost convinced him he was a ‘dunce’!

G.K. Chesterton, the English writer, couldn’t read until he was eight years old!

In the Bible, the apostle Peter, having denied knowing Jesus three times after the Lord’s arrest, must have felt a total failure, but he was healed and restored and went on to become one of the key foundational leaders of the Christian Church.

Maybe, as you read this you are struggling with the effects of failure, and wondering if you can ever succeed again. Take heart and be encouraged! God our heavenly Father is willing and able to help and restore you – with him your future can be greater than your failure!
