“Noi Gardenesi…

…siamo gente curiosa: per noi è importante essere costantemente alla ricerca di qualcosa e anche trovarla. Ciò ebbe inizio nel lontano 14° secolo. Gli agricoltori di montagna della Val Gardena disponevano di campi poveri, i masi a valle sorgevano tutti a un’altitudine superiore a 1.200 m e, quindi, avevano bisogno di una fonte di sostentamento supplementare per l’inverno, che trovarono nell’arte di tornire ciotole e intagliare giocattoli nel legno; oggetti facili da vendere, prima come ambulanti e poi in tutto il mondo. Noi gardenesi siamo ladini e, quindi, non abbiamo una letteratura alle spalle, poiché la nostra lingua retoromanza venne tramandata solo oralmente, così, abbiamo scoperto un altro genere creativo: l’artigianato artistico dell’intaglio che presto ci ha aperto le porte del mondo. A partire dal 16° secolo, le famiglie Trebinger e Vinatzer con le loro sculture e gli altari ne hanno fatto un’autentica arte. Oggigiorno, vivono qui numerosi artisti ed artigiani, che trasformano esclusivamente i loro pensieri e punti di vista, riflettendo la Val Gardena verso l’esterno con uno stile particolare che naturalmente ci contraddistingue tutti, poiché fin da bambini ci confrontavamo quotidianamente con il linguaggio figurato della nostra terra natia, con i presepi, gli altari e le sculture sacre e profane nei laboratori e nei negozi d’artigianato artistico. Noi artisti gardenesi, però, viviamo i nostri paesi e la nostra valle in maniera individuale e con prospettive personali. È una fortuna sapere da dove veniamo, poiché senza le nostre storie non potremmo andare avanti. Amore, vita, morte, fede e giustizia: i temi degli artisti sono sempre stati anche gli argomenti dell’umanità e lo sono ancora oggi. Sono solo gli strumenti a cambiare: computer e video s’affiancano a pennelli o scalpelli e ha già avuto inizio anche l’attività creativa con i robot.”

In Val Gardena…

curiosity trumps everything else. Our curiosity has led us to finding many noteworthy things. We’ve always been a curious bunch, really. Even back in the 14th century we had a knack for finding stuff. Back then, the field’s yield was pretty low, every farm in the valley was located well above 1,200 m. In that dire situation, farmers had to look for another source of income during winter… and lo and behold, they found one: they made keys and carved wooden toys. They were easy enough to sell, to travelling traders at first, and then to the rest of the world. In Val Gardena we are Ladin: literature was a foreign concept to us, and so our Rhaeto-Romance language was only transmitted orally. We may have lacked books, but we did find our very own creative genre: wood carving. We travelled far and wide and the trade slowly blossomed into other forms of art. Sculpting is one prime example, perfected in the 16th century by the Trebinger and Vinatzer families and their beautiful sculptures and altars. Nowadays, many artists and craftsmen live here, who exclusively transform their thoughts and points of view, reflecting their thoughts and perceptions around Val Gardena. While this may be our own point of view, it goes without saying that we were, of course, influenced by the daily art in our life as we grew up: cribs, altars, holy and secular sculptures all featured in local workshops and ateliers. However, it’s also true that we Val Gardena artists experience our village and valley from our own perspective. It’s good that we know where we come from. We can’t live without our history. Love, life, death, faith, justice – the themes of our paintings are the themes of humanity and will always be so. Only our tools change: we have brushes and easels as well as computers and videos. Even the creative work with robots has already begun.’

Aron Demetz si definisce “un classico scultore dagli approcci individuali”. Espone in tutto il mondo e vive in Val Gardena, dove lavora con i materiali della sua terra natia, come ad esempio legno e resina. Dipinge, placca in argento oppure oro alcune delle sue sculture come gli antichi maestri, mentre altre le fa caparbiamente passare per un “cammino di fuoco”. Aron Demetz is ‘a self-proclaimed classical sculptor with his own ideas.’ He’s been featured internationally, lives in Val Gardena. Here he works with the material of his home, wood and tree resin. He paints, or applies a silver or golden lacquer to some of his sculptures, while others are stubbornly subjected to a rite of fire.
