The Value of Volunteering “Not everything that counts can be counted. And not everything that can be counted, counts.” Albert Einstein By Richard Forzley

What is a volunteer? What is the value of volunteering?

Volunteering is about giving, contributing, and helping other individuals and the community at large. It’s working with others to make a meaningful contribution to a better community. People volunteer for an endless variety of reasons: to gain experience, acquire new skills, meet new people, or expand their network of contacts as a way to get a new job or start a career. Others just want to give back to their community, to help a friend or promote a worthwhile activity. They do it because it makes them feel good. It gives them a “private smile.” This is the intrinsic value of volunteering. It is not about money and volunteering should not be measured that way. We can add up the hours but not give them a dollar value. This would be simplistic and dangerous because it assumes that only economic measurements are valuable and that volunteer time is free labour. This is a slippery slope. It infers that volunteer work is replacing paid labour. It infers that if work is not paid for, it is not valuable. It reduces volunteerism to hours worked instead of contributions made. It ignores the value of volunteers in creating a vibrant civil society - dynamic, engaged and self-reliant.

4

Volunteering itself is rich and diverse. It’s not just about organizing hundreds or thousands of volunteers for large events like the Olympics. It is thousands of volunteers in minor league sports, shelters for the homeless, giving aid to seniors, holding hands in a hospice or cleaning up a local stream. It is spontaneous acts of kindness like helping a neighbour shovel their walk, coming to the aid of a stranded motorist or helping an elderly person cross a busy street. These large and small acts, given freely, are what bind communities together. Volunteering is helping, not hiring; giving, not taking; contributing, not counting. Some say putting a dollar amount on volunteering does no harm. But this insidiously undermines the true value of volunteerism. Like the term “mandatory volunteerism,” it distorts the meaning and spirit of volunteering. We want motivated, not mandatory volunteers. We want willing, not “paid” volunteers. Add up the hours if you must but do not be blinded by the numbers. The value of volunteering is much deeper, much more fulfilling and much more important in contributing to a healthy and vibrant community than money can ever measure. August 2016

In the end, we cannot and should not put a dollar value on volunteering. How can we put a monetary value on ordinary people doing extraordinary things? The Kerrisdale Community Centre is a perfect example of how volunteers give invaluable and precious time to their community. The Centre has provided recreation programming to residents of Kerrisdale since 1955 after local area referendum agreed to finance it. Beginning in 1983, a dedicated group of area citizens campaigned for funding to build the Seniors Centre that opened in December 1986. Two major renovations were completed in 1999 and 2005, including the exercise room. As one of the busiest Community Centres in Vancouver, it offers more than 1,500 different programs each year, offered to members of all ages and range from fitness to art, languages to bridge and martial arts to dance. There are special workshops on a variety of topics as well as a regular speaker’s series. Through its Seniors Centre, it serves daily lunches to approximately 700 seniors

Retired local resident Melina Hung has lived in Kerrisdale for more than 10 years. Responding to a notice seeking Board members, she was an active volunteer from 2008 and 2013, rejoining in 2015. “One of my fondest memories,” she says, “was being Chair of the 2010 KCCS Olympic & Paralympic Committee working to organize community events to celebrate the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games.” She currently serves as a member of the Needs Assessment, Youth and Finance. “This is my community and I believe that it is important to be involved and contribute towards building a stronger neighbourhood. For me, it’s stimulating to work with members of the board and I value the learning experience.” Melina holds a BA from the University of Hong Kong and an MBA degree from the University of Western Ontario. Prior to retirement, she worked for many years in a marketing capacity in Hong Kong and Canada for both corporate and non-profit organizations.

each week. The Monday through Saturday lunch program also provides baked goods and coffee and tea service to its members. Open every day except Christmas, the Centre serves over 12,000 people who participate in one or more programs every year. The Kerrisdale Community Centre complex also includes a pool and a branch of the Vancouver Public Library. The Centre is operated jointly by the Kerrisdale Community Centre Society and the Vancouver Park Board. All programming and activities at the Centre are the responsibility of the Society which is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected annually at the Annual General Meeting. Here’s your chance to meet three of those incredibly valuable volunteers If you’re interested in more information on volunteering at the Kerrisdale Community Centre, visit kerrisdalecc.com Do you know a neighbour who has a story to share? Don Munton joined the KCCS Board in 2012 after becoming a regular user of the fitness facilities and a firm admirer of Centre activities. “My grandparents settled in Kerrisdale about a century ago,” he says. “My father grew up here and my daughter learned to swim in the KCC Pool and played soccer for a centre-sponsored team.” In his 38-year academic career, Don taught international relations at Dalhousie University, UBC, the University of Northern BC and, most recently, as a visiting professor for a year at Kwansei Gakuin University in Kobe, Japan. He continues to research, write, and publish academic “stuff” on international topics. “I care deeply about Kerrisdale as a community, and about the role of the Centre as a place where people come together.” He has been involved in the struggle to maintain local control of Vancouver’s community centres, and was involved in the group of six community centres that won a court injunction against a City takeover attempt. “When I’m not holed up writing or hiding in the KCC basement gym, I chair the Board’s Needs Assessment Committee, evaluating the Centre’s operations and undertaking a review of the changing needs of the community. The Centre has been good to my family and the community. I am no different in than hundreds of other who do volunteer work here,” he says.

Avalon Bourne has lived in Kerrisdale for just over two years. She joined the KCCS as a Board Member in 2016 and serves as a member of the Program, Community Engagement and Youth Committees. “Currently, I’m the Manager, Administration for Mitacs, an innovation-focused, national not-for-profit organization that designs and delivers research and training programs,” she says. Avalon is also the Chair of the Mitacs Joint Health & Safety Committee, and sits on various working groups. “My volunteer role includes being the Administrator for the Vancouver Chapter of the Women in Leadership Foundation.” Avalon graduated from UBC with a BA in English Literature and also holds a Certificate in Professional Writing & Business Communication from Simon Fraser. “For me, it’s important to be active in my community by giving back and helping to create a true sense of community. I like feeling that I’m making difference in building a vibrant community for all Kerrisdale residents.”

Disney Cruise Line – Cruise Industry “Firsts” and Innovations By Christine Macdougall Expedia Cruiseshipcenter, Kerrisdale Since its launch in 1998, Disney Cruise Line has established itself as a leader in the cruise
industry, providing a setting where families can reconnect, adults can recharge and children
can experience all Disney has to offer.
Today, Disney Cruise Line continues to expand its blueprint for family cruising with a fleet of
four ships – the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.
Guests can sail out of ports around the world on exciting itineraries to the Caribbean,
Bahamas, Hawaii, Alaska and Europe, among others. The homeport for Disney Cruise Line
remains Port Canaveral, Florida, where it has its own specially designed cruise terminal.

Disney Cruise Line was the first cruise line… • Have a fireworks display at sea, like only Disney can do, a stunning entertainment element for the “Pirates IN the Caribbean” celebration. • Implement an innovative rotational dining concept, featuring three themed restaurants, where guests dine in a different venue each evening, accompanied by their same serving team • Have a dock at the line’s private island (Castaway Cay), allowing guests the ease of walking on and off the ship at their leisure, thus eliminating the need to use tender boats. • Have a shipboard water coaster – AquaDuck! • Give inside staterooms a “window” on the outside with a Magical Porthole, a wall-mounted monitor that displays realtime video views from high-definition cameras outside of the ship. • Bring The Muppets to a cruise ship in an interactive adventure game played through the ship’s Enchanted Art. • Allow guests to become animators and see their own drawings magically come to life and dance on screen. 6

• Make the princess and pirate fantasies of young guests a reality, giving them full pixie-dusted and piratical makeovers at the first Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and Pirates League at sea. • Offer movie premieres at sea on the same day a film debuts in theaters – including films in Disney Digital 3-D. • Feature nearly an entire deck dedicated to children’s activities. From Flounder’s Reef and It’s a Small World Nursery to the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab, kids from 12 weeks to 12 years have plenty of places to take their imaginations to new levels. • Offer exclusive spaces just for tweens and teens. 11-13 year olds can hang out at Edge, while 14-17 year olds have their own club, Vibe. • Offer free soft drinks any time of day or night, with a free 24/7 beverage station offering sodas, coffee, tea and water. • Design staterooms with a family-friendly bath-and-a-half. • Provide guests with complimentary use of Wave Phones for onboard communications. • Have an animated character as the godmother of a ship. Tinker Bell is the godmother of the Disney Wonder. • Apply a hull coating that is non-toxic and innovative in reducing surface resistance in the water, allowing the ship to be more fuel efficient and eco-friendly. • Have yellow-colored lifeboats, rather than the traditional regulation color of orange. Disney was granted special permission by the U.S. Coast Guard to paint the lifeboats yellow, in order to keep with the special color theming of the ship – the colors of Mickey Mouse himself. To learn more about Disney Cruise Line or to book a vacation, guests can visit www.disneycruise.com, call Disney Cruise Line at 888-325-2500 or contact their travel agent. August 2016

Recipe of the

Month

berr y breakfast smoothie By Emma Riehl

Breakfast is the perfect time to incorporate as many vitamins and minerals as possible in order to jumpstart your day. If you skip breakfast, you’ll be more susceptible to the temptation of fast food or equally unhealthy choices come lunchtime. Giving your body plenty of fiber, vitamins, and protein before you leave your house in the morning is a sure way to offset cravings later in the day. Time, however, is always an issue when it comes to this crucial meal. Between busy kids’ schedules, early meetings, and a beloved sleep cycle, finding the time to prepare and consume a healthy breakfast is easier said than done. Enter the smoothie: a quick, nutritious way to start your day. The recipe below contains ample protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, omega-6 fatty acids, and various other nutrients. Simply plug in your blender, compile the ingredients, and voila! Nutrition in a cup.

Between the protein powder and chia seeds, this smoothie contains roughly 30 grams of protein, meaning it can easily pass as a meal. The berries and banana offer an ample serving of antioxidants to begin your day, along with the kale or spinach. Chia seeds contain a whopping 11 grams of fiber, which is approximately 40% of your daily value. Fiber keeps you fuller longer, so by the time lunch comes around, you’ll be able to make smart choices without the interruption of hunger or cravings. If you use a fresh banana along with fresh berries, add some ice to the mix in order to thicken and cool it.

ingredients •

1 cup mixed berries (fresh or frozen blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries)

1 whole banana (frozen is preferred)

1 teaspoon of chia seeds

1 scoop of soy or whey protein powder

¾ cup milk (dairy, soy, or almond)

1 small bunch of fresh spinach or kale
