A

re neighbourhood pharmacies a thing of the past? Not according to Colin Holyk, owner of Kerrisdale Pharmacy on the corner of West Boulevard and 40th Avenue. “We’ve been part of the Kerrisdale community for 35 years now,” he says. “My father Michael, who practiced as a pharmacist for over 50 years, purchased the store in 1981 when it was located on the 2100 block of West 41st. In 1997, we moved to our current location. I have a second pharmacy in West Vancouver called Hollyburn Pharmacy, which we’ve owned since 2001, and will open our third store in October also in West Vancouver.”

of our aging population. “At Kerrisdale Pharmacy, we provide professional pharmacy and prescription services as well as custom medication compounding, holistic nutrition counselling, and organic and natural alternatives, among other innovative solutions.”

Colin graduated from UBC’s pharmacy program in 1990 and has practiced in Kerrisdale ever since. “I’ve been involved in pharmacy all my life having worked after school and on weekends at my father’s pharmacy in Alberta before we moved to Vancouver in 1982,” he says. “Becoming a pharmacist just seemed very familiar and natural to me.”

“As a pharmacist, helping people maintain or improve their health, and really getting to know them along the way, is extremely satisfying. Plus, we have an amazing group of employees at the pharmacy, many of them into their 2nd or 3rd decade with us, who all go the extra mile in helping our clients. It’s a great team to have and be a part of.

Pharmacies today deliver a growing range of healthcare services and that seems likely to increase as they evolve to address the needs 4

Philosophically Colin sees Kerrisdale Pharmacy as a significant part of a patient’s health, “… not just their sickness. We focus on 360 degrees of wellness for our patients offering more than just a prescription filling service, providing as many effective products that are organic, natural, or free from toxic additives, colours, or preservatives as possible.

A Little History of Compounding

Pharmaceutical compounding has ancient roots. Hunter-gatherer soc ieties had some knowledge of the med icinal properties of the animals, plan ts, molds, fungus and bacteria as well as inorganic minerals within their environment. Ancient civilizations used pharmaceutical compounding for religion, grooming, keeping the healthy well, treating the ill and preparing the dead. These ancient compounders produced the first oils from plants and animals. They discovered poisons and the antidotes. They made ointments for wounded patients and perfumes for customers. The modern age of pharmacy compounding began in the 19th century with the isolation of various com pounds from coal tar for the purpos e of producing synthetic dyes. From this one natural product came the earl iest antibacterial sulfa drugs, phenoli c compounds made famous by Jos eph Lister, and plastics. During the 1800s, pharmacists spe cialized in the raising, preparatio n and compounding of crude drugs. Cru de drugs, like opium, are from natu ral sources and usually contain several chemical compounds. The compou nding pharmacist often extracted these crude drugs using water or alcohol to form extracts, concoctions and decocti ons. Pharmacists began isolating and identifying the active ingredients contained within these crude drug concoction s. Using fractionation or recrysta llization, the compounding pharmacist wou ld separate the active ingredients, like morphine, and use it in place of the crude drug. During this time mod ern medicine began. With the isolation of medications from the raw materials or crude dru gs came the birth of the modern pha rmaceutical company. The turn of the 20th century saw greater government regulation of the practice of med icin e. These new regulations forced the drug companies to prove that any new medication they brought to market was safe . With the discovery of penicillin, modern marketing techniques and brand promotion, the drug manufacturin g industry came of age. Pharmacists continu ed to compound most prescriptio ns until the early 1950s when the majorit y of dispensed drugs came directly from the large pharmaceutical companies.

The Art of Science of Nighbourhood Pharmacies

cont’d

“Being part of the Kerrisdale community for 35 years, I am very touched by all of the people in our neighbourhood who have trusted us to help them with their health. In many cases, we’re helping the 2nd, 3rd and 4th generations of families. Amazing really!” He points out that for the last 15 years his driving passion for pharmacy is prescription compounding. “Our compounding pharmacists can personalize medicine for patients who need specific strengths, dosage forms, flavours, or ingredients excluded from medications due to allergies or other sensitivities,” he says. “Compounding is the most satisfying area of my practice and extremely helpful to our patients.” At one time, nearly all prescriptions were compounded. With the advent of mass drug manufacturing in the 1950s and ‘60s, compounding declined. The pharmacist’s role in preparing of medications quickly changed to dispensing manufactured dosage forms. The “one-size-fits-all” nature of many mass-produced medications meant that some patients’ needs were not being met. “Pharmacists used to be trained to compound the preparations that today are made by the drug companies, but they could not do it efficiently on a small scale. It was economies of scale, not lack of skill or knowledge, that produced the modern pharmaceutical industry,” he remarks. “I was extremely honoured to be awarded the Canadian Compounding Pharmacist of the Year for 2015 by the Professional Compounding Centres of America. I am currently the president of the Kerrisdale Business Association and vice president of the Unipharm Medicine Centre Pharmacies Charitable Foundation (UMC Charity).” At this point Colin notes that there is more to him than his 6

interest in pharmacy. “My wife Christine and I have been married for four years. We spend much of our time in the garden and in the kitchen where we both love to cook as well as travelling and going to live music and art events as often as we can.” Christine, he says, is a valuable member of his team. “I lean on her for her computer design skills and business savvy. She is unofficially in charge of our marketing initiatives and our website. “I’m also a life-long runner who loves the challenge of running and the beauty I see along my running routes. I have run too many races to remember and am fortunate to have raced a number of marathons in Vancouver, Seattle, Boston, Chicago, New York and Bordeaux.” On that note he adds: “One of the best decisions I ever made was to form a band. I am a guitar player in a rock band called Line49. We play at clubs and private events around the Lower Mainland. I am very passionate about music and to be in the band playing on stage with these great musicians and fantastic guys who are my band mates makes me feel like I’m living the dream each gig.” Line49 is an 80’s, 90’s and modern rock cover band who play new wave hits, alternative rock tunes, and songs from the giant rock bands “… all flush with a big guitar sound. Our sound and style is influenced heavily by the British Invasion bands including The Cult, U2, Billy Idol, Simple Minds, Tears For Fears, Duran Duran, and the Cure, as well as other popular bands such as the The Killers, Jet, Green Day, Maroon 5 and Blink 182.” For more about Line49, check out their website at line49band.com. Vancouver Art Gallery 750 Hornby St. Known for his enormous contribution to the canon of great art in the 20th century, Pablo Ruiz y Picasso (1881-1973) is one of the masters of Modernism. Examining the significance of the six women who were inspirational to his artistic development, this is the most significant exhibition of Picasso’s work ever presented in Vancouver. Beginning in early 20th-century Paris, the exhibition takes the visitor on a journey through the lives and personalities of Fernande Olivier, Olga Khokhlova, Marie-Thérèse Walter, Dora Maar, Françoise Gilot and Jacqueline Roque, who were all principal figures in Picasso’s personal life and strongly influenced the development of his career. Picasso’s innovations in painting, drawing, print and sculpture are conveyed through recurring motifs such as the seated woman and reclining nude. The exhibition presents major works that dramatically altered the course of European art history. vanartgallery.bc.ca continued on page 10

Heat the olive oil in a large stock pot over mediumhigh heat.

Sautee the carrots, celery, leeks, garlic and sausage with a pinch of salt until sausage is lightly browned and the vegetables are tender. Stir in the tomato paste until it coats all the ingredients.

Turn the heat down to medium-low then add the red wine and kale. Place a lid on your pot for two minutes so the kale will wilt.

Stir in the lentils, cumin, paprika, thyme, black pepper, cayenne and salt, and then pour in the vegetable stock. (Add water if stock doesn’t cover the lentils) Simmer on medium heat uncovered for 30- 45 minutes or until lentils are tender. Garnish with shaved parmesan cheese and serve with crusty bread.
