Spring is finally here and the air is sweet with fragrances from the gorgeous flowering trees that line the streets of Kerrisdale. At this time of year, our thoughts naturally turn to all things outdoors, whether it’s replanting your garden or simply enjoying the sun on your face. Even spring cloud bursts feel new and fresh. As a very outdoor-oriented city, particularly in the warm months of spring and summer, it’s time to turn our attention away from winter cocooning and outwards to things reflected in this month’s articles. Find out how to avoid garden pests, how to buy running shoes, what lies in store for you by visiting gorgeous VanDusen Botanical Garden or how to make fabulous ribs on your outdoor grill. With the summer months fast approaching, it’s not too early to think about what to do and things to enjoy during the hottest time of the year. Fill us in on any summer activities for adults and/or children that your group or organization is planning. Send us the information and we’ll publish it in an upcoming issue. We want to be part of your success, so please let us know how we can help make your summer in the city the best ever. In the meantime, enjoy the weather, the birds, the trees and everything that glorious Vancouver has to offer. Until next month, Richard Forzley - Content Coordinator

VanDusen Botanical Garden

The Garden’s History Information from VanDusen Botanical Garden website. Compiled by Richard Forzley

VanDusen Botanical Garden is located in the centre of South Vancouver on land previously owned by the CPR and then the Shaughnessy Golf Course. In 1960 local residents saved the land from development through a shared funding plan with the City, the Province, the Vancouver Foundation and a sizeable donation from W.J. VanDusen. About the Garden

The 55 acres of VanDusen Botancial Garden opened in August 1975 and houses more than 255,000 plants representing over 7,300 varieties from around the world. The plants are organized around the flora of various ecosystems and are intermixed with an impressive collection of sculpture that range from First Nation totem poles to busts of famous Canadians to contemporary pieces by artists from around the globe. Vancouver’s mild winters and temperate climate is fertile ground for a spectacular arrangement of plants, recreating an astonishing array of ecosystems from the Far East, Africa, South America, Europe and Australasia. Among the many gems in the Garden are 4

the Rhododendron Walk, the Sino-Himalayan Garden, separate gardens devoted to roses, herbs and heathers, and an Elizabethan hedge maze tucked away in the western corner. Site features include hills, lakes, and winding paths, all with a view of the city and mountains. Special features in the garden include carved totem poles, large stone sculptures, and a Korean Pavilion at the edge of the Asian plant collection. Children, in particular, enjoy the maze situated next to the heirloom vegetable garden. Other specialized plantings include a Heather garden, a “black” garden, a seasonal “Laburnum Walk”, a majestic stand of sequoia, a cypress pond, a formal perennial garden, a heritage vegetable garden (seasonal), a fragrance garden (seasonal) and a large sino-Himalayan garden. Garden Features

The hexagonal Korean Pavilion was a gift from the Korean people in 1986, at the conclusion of the World Exposition.
In 2005, the Pavilion underwent a restoration, using a team of three artisans sent from Korea who specialize in the ancient technique May 2016

of dan cheong. Dan cheong, a surface decoration style specific to Korea, is used primarily to decorate and prolong the life of wooden structures and involves staining the wood rather than painting over it, retaining the natural grain and beauty of the wood making it part of the design. In dan cheong only five basic colours are used – red, blue, yellow, black and white. The Maze

Mazes and labyrinths have fascinated people since the dawn of history. The VanDusen maze is made of 3,000 pyramidal cedars planted in the autumn of 1981. There is an observation terrace from which the less adventuresome visitor can view the maze. Stone Garden

This area has a landscape stylized on an oriental theme with vertical outcroppings of rock that symbolize “islands” in a dry lake. The area adjacent to the Stone Garden is the second highest point in Vancouver. Scottish Shelter

This structure in the Heather Garden is built of local basaltic rock in a style compatible with the moorland theme of the surrounding landscape. Originally such a structure would have had a thatched roof of heather, but for reasons of safety and ease of maintenance, natural slate is used instead. Neighbours of Kerrisdale

Art in the Garden International Sculpture Symposium

VanDusen houses a collection of several sculptures, including fountains, sited throughout the Garden. Eleven larger stone sculptures were created at the Vancouver International Stone Sculpture Symposium, held in 1975. Additional sculptures came to the Garden as gifts or were commissioned by VanDusen Botanical Garden Association (VBGA). Wildlife Birds

VanDusen Botanical Garden is an ideal ecosystem for birds, offering plenty of water, trees, sheltered areas, open lawns and food sources.
Once a month, the Garden offers a Guided Bird Walk that is free for Members or included in the Garden admission fee. Bees

The Garden is home to honey bee hives that each house between 35,000 to 50,000 bees. On average one hive will produce 60 pounds of honey in a season (spring through late autumn when the hives are winterized and the bees are put to bed.) The cycle starts again in the spring when the first blossoms appear. continued on page 6 5

Urban Wildlife

Not surprisingly, the lushly planted 55 acres offer a wide diversity of habitats well-suited to urban wildlife. With plenty of food and shelter, the Garden makes a perfect home for squirrels, turtles, fish, coyotes and insects, all integral to the overall health and balance of the ecosystem. In addition to pollinating flowers and dispersing seeds, urban wildlife is beneficial in many other ways. Predatory insects prey on plant-eating insects, coyotes keep herbivores at bay, while the fish and turtles help keep the ponds in balance.

Six Easy Ways to Prevent Pests and Other Garden Problems By Phil Beck How do you manage pests and diseases that are the bane of every gardener? Avoid insecticides, opting instead to attack pests with some of these lower-impact methods and avert the problem before it actually becomes a serious threat.

Location, location, location: Pests can become more troublesome if your vegetables are grown in conditions that aren’t ideal. If you plant sun-loving vegetables in shade, for example, the result could be severe mildew problems. • Plant Choices: Find out which diseases are common in your area and choose plants that are infection resistant. • Know the enemy: The more you know about specific pests and diseases common to your area — when and how they spread — the easier it is to avoid them. For example, some diseases can run wild on wet leaves. The problem can be avoided by keeping water off the plants’ leaves or by watering them early in the day so they dry out quickly.

• Keep your plants healthy: Healthy plants are less likely to have problems, so water and fertilize regularly to keep them strong and more pest resistant. Other healthy habits include keeping your garden clean and free of debris, eliminating hiding places for pests and diseases. • Encourage beneficial insects: There are good bugs in your garden that feed on the pests that cause problems for your vegetables. You likely have many beneficial insects in your garden already but you can also plant flowers to attract them. Watch out for sneaky little slugs that slither in at night and eat the leaves and fruit of many plants. Rather than letting them take over your garden, take action with a variety of techniques including lures and traps as well as using natural predators to get rid of slugs. Avoid chemicals and slug-killers because they can have negative effects on your garden, the environment and your pets. • Rotate your plants each year: Avoid planting the same plants in the same location year after year, especially if you are using raised beds. Rotation prevents pests and diseases that are specific to certain plants from building up in your garden. If an insect or disease does get out of hand, treat it effectively with simple control measures such as handpicking and squashing snails, or knocking off aphids with a blast of water from a hose. Buying Running Shoes By Angie Spencer, Running Coach

A good pair of running shoes is worth the investment.

If you're thinking, "Hey, I've got an old pair of gym shoes I've hardly worn that have been in the back of my closet for a few years," think again. Even without use, the materials can degrade and the shoe will not perform as needed. If you've never been fitted for running shoes before, go to a specialty running store where they'll evaluate your foot type and gait. Having a supportive and comfortable pair of running shoes will make all the difference. Making the financial commitment to buy a good pair of shoes will also help cement the decision to reach your goal of completing a 5k, 10k or half marathon.

Understanding Your Foot Type Having a basic understanding of your foot type will help you choose the best pair of shoes. You can evaluate your foot type by wetting the bottom of one foot and stepping firmly on a paper bag. Look at the wet imprint left and evaluate how much of your foot came into contact with the bag. If you have a high arch, your toes, the ball of your foot, and your heel will be imprinted, but very little of the length of your foot will show up. A person with a normal arch will imprint all of the above as well as a two- to three-inch outline of their foot length. If you have a low arch or flat foot, you will see the entire bottom of your foot in the imprint.

The shoe should feel comfortable when you walk. Take it for a short test run. Every serious running store I’ve visited allows customers to jog down the sidewalk and back. If the shoe hurts, don’t buy it. Once you have found a great pair of running shoes, remember that they'll only last for four to five hundred miles. A good way to track how many miles you have run on your shoes is through a running log. After four to five hundred miles, the inner support of the shoe starts to break down, even if the outside still looks good. The outer materials of running shoes are built to withstand around eight hundred miles, so don't be deceived by outward appearance.

Most Runners Fall Into Three Basic Categories: »» Neutral (normal arch): The foot strikes the ground near the outside of the heel and rolls slightly inward to the ball of the foot, which absorbs the shock of your weight as you land. »» Overpronation (low arch, flat feet): The foot strikes the ground near the outside of the heel, but as it pushes off, it rolls too far inward and the weight shifts toward the inside of the sole, causing more range of motion than normal. »» Supination (high arch): The foot strikes the ground in the right place on the heel but doesn't roll inward enough, creating less than normal range of motion.

Tips for Buying Shoes I can’t stress this enough. If you are going to be a serious runner, it is worth it to visit a specialty running store and have a gait analysis. The analysis should be free and consists of you running on a treadmill, while a slow motion camera captures images of your foot strike. You should be able to fit the width of your index finger between the end of your longest toe and the front of the shoe upper. This extra room allows for your feet to swell, which naturally happens when running longer distances. Also, make sure the toe box has enough room to allow for up and down movement of the toes (they shouldn't feel cramped). Neighbours of Kerrisdale

Recipe of the

Month

Hoisin Glazed Barbecue Pork Ribs Courtesy of Chef John at Foodwishes

Chef John at Foodwishes is one of our favorite video food blogs–great recipes and great sense of humor. This is his recipe to a “T” except for the dry rub where we added some Sichuan peppercorns to kick the Asian BBQ theme up a notch. Whole rack of pork ribs Marinade

Glaze

1/2 cup hoisin sauce

1/2 cup ketchup

6 oz. pineapple juice

1/4 cup seasoned rice vinegar

1 tbs sambal chili sauce

1 tbs soy sauce

First cut rack of rib in half and place in large 1 gallon ziplock. Add the marinade ingredients and give it a little massage and marinade for at least 8 hrs, preferably overnight.

Dry Rub 2 tbs kosher salt 1/2 ts 5-spice powder 1 tbs brown sugar pinch of cayenne powder 2 tbs Sichuan peppercorns, pan roasted and then crushed in mortar (our only addition to the recipe)

1 tbs fish sauce 2 tbs hoisin sauce Mix all ingredients well in small bowl. After 1 hour, baste the ribs with a brush, both sides and repeat every 20 minutes, and it will form a nice golden brown/red crust. We repeated this for about 3 1/2 hrs total and the ribs were very tender and slightly falling off the bone. If you like them to melt off the bone, continue cooking it a little longer at a lower tempurature. We served it with some Vietnamese style coleslaw (goi) and spiced candied kumquats. It was fantastically good and the tangy kumquats go great with the sweet hoisin glazed ribs. Definitely give this a try!

Remove ribs from ziplock and dab dry with paper towel. Generously apply the dry rub all over. Roast in oven at 300 degrees for one hour. 14

KIDS Corner!

PICTURE VASE:

By Tori S. Bevens

T

his was a fun way to spend an afternoon with my kids. At two and four years old and armed with their smocks, the painting was by far their favorite part. Take care to spray paint outside, and enjoy their expressions when this project comes to life and they see their little faces in the frame window. Mason jar Interior satin paint Paint brush Colored masking tape

Photo Plastic cup (that fits in jar) Fresh flowers Clear spray paint

1. With masking tape block out a square on the outside of the mason jar the size of your picture. 2. Turn the jar upside down and paint the rest of the jar with the chosen color. 3. Remove the masking tape before the paint dries. 4. When the jar is dry, insert the picture on the inside of the jar into the window created by the masking tape. 5. Secure the photo with tape. 6. Head outside and spray the exterior of the painted jar with clear spray paint to seal. 7. Place plastic cup in the jar and fill with water. Avoid putting water directly in the jar to keep your photo dry. 8. Place flowers in the cup.
