Hello Residents of Kerrisdale, I hope you enjoyed this past month’s introductory issue of your new neighbourhood magazine. A big thank you to Graeme McKenny for being on our first cover in April and letting us see into his daily life as a resident and business owner in Kerrisdale. In this month’s issue, I’m happy to introduce you to Jonathan Sun and his family, another lifelong Kerrisdale resident who recently purchased the home his father built in Kerrisdale and opened a new sports therapy clinic in the neighbourhood. It’s been my pleasure getting to know people in the neighbourhood. As I continue on my mission to showcase the people, places and organizations that make Kerrisdale a great place to live, please join me in my quest by submitting stories and pictures you’d like to share with your neighbours. And if you or someone you know would like to be featured in a future issue, let us know. These pages are yours to fill as you choose. Have a cause to champion, some little known history of the area or other stories you think would be of interest? Please feel free to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you. With thanks, Dave Pagani Publisher

Three Generations of Kerrisdale Life By Richard Forzley

Photos by Sarah Virag Photography

Jonathan Sun and his wife Janis share a home in Kerrisdale with their 15-month-old son Chase and their nine-year old Shih tzu/Bichon Frise Bobbi. “My parents built this house in 1994,” he says, “so it was where I spent a large part of my childhood. Four years ago, I had the opportunity to purchase the house from them. Raising my son in the same home I grew up in, the place his grandfather built, is special and something I’ve always dreamt about.” As well as living in his old neighbourhood, Jon owns and operates Evolution Sport Therapy with locations in Kerrisdale and Richmond. “I completed a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in Athletic Therapy at the University of Alberta,” he says, “and also hold an advanced certificate in athletic therapy from Mount Royal University.” Running his own business offers Jon and his family many rewards. “Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of being selfemployed,” he says, “is finding time for an annual vacation. Since the birth of our son, I’m going to have to start making room in my 4

schedule for more family time.” At the heart of Evolution Sport Therapy is Jon’s focus on helping weekend warriors as well as elite athletes get over sports injuries as quickly as possible. By combining athletic therapy and chiropractic in a multidisciplinary approach to injury recovery, his approach is holistic and designed to address every component of the injury by using the skill sets of an athletic therapist and a chiropractor. “Our main goal is to shorten an athlete’s downtime and to offer rapid treatment that gets you back to enjoying an active lifestyle.” Jon believes that by combining the knowledge base of both types of health care practitioners, his clinic leaves no stone unturned when it comes to finding a solution for physical ailments. He points out that, “the chiropractor focuses on the spine and neuromuscular systems, while the athletic therapist addresses soft tissue treatment and rehabilitation. In the end,” he says, “this hybrid treatment provides fast, effective relief and recovery from sports related injuries.” His May 2015

educational training also includes specific rehabilitative techniques that treat the body as a complete functioning whole. “When there is dysfunction, the entire body is affected by compensation patterns. With objective orthopedic testing, we can pinpoint the pattern and address every facet of your injury. “I’ve been an avid Vancouver Canucks fan since I was a kid,” he says, “and play recreational men’s league hockey in Richmond, so I’m very familiar with the kinds of injuries athletes are prone to.” His experience is broad and includes five years on the board of directors for the Athletic Therapists Association of BC, including a term as president. He has worked clinically since 2004 and has worked with the Canadian National Tae Kwon Doe Team for the 2006 Commonwealth Championships, Canadian Senior Women’s Basketball, Canadian U-18 women’s soccer and BC’s provincial soccer program. “I’m very invested in sports activities for myself and my family,” he says. “Our 15-monthold son just started to walk at the end of 2014 and has already had his first gymnastics class.” Jon and his wife, who works in the insurance industry, met in 2005 and were married at the Sutton Place Hotel in August of 2010. “My wife hates it when I tell this to people, but in 2007 she was a Miss Hong Kong pageant contestant. I have always been proud of how brave she was to do something like that,” he says. “We love living in Kerrisdale. It’s changed a lot over the last 10 years but it’s a wonderful place to raise a family with its welcoming and friendly people and neighbourhoods. As my young family grows, I look forward to becoming even more active with local sports and community events.” To learn more about Evolution Sport Therapy, visit www.evosporttherapy.com.

NEEDED! Stars for Stories!

Do you want to discover new things about your neighbours? Want to be in the headlines? Want to see your pictures published? We’re looking for neighbourhood families, business owners or individuals who have a story to share. That story might be to celebrate an award you’ve won, to share your recent vacation, or simply to introduce yourself and share a message with neighbours. We are bringing local to the next level and want this magazine to serve you. Let us know what you hope to see in these monthly pages.

Here’s how to get started. Use these prompts to fire up your imagination: • • • • • • •

Brainstorm what you would like to see in this magazine and what you’d like to share with neighbours. Has your family taken a vacation recently? Share your amazing photos from the continent and beyond! Do you have any special talents in your family? Do you play musical instruments? Do you have a band? Are you running a marathon? Are you the next Einstein? Do you make and sell crafts? Business owners, the community starts right outside your front door. The family feature story is a great place to introduce your services to those closest to you. Volunteers, are you passionate about charity work? Do you organize a fundraiser each year for a non-profit or walk to fight disease? Your story might motivate others to get involved, too. Are you the leader of a book club or group? Do you organize the dinner club or ladies’ night out? Show neighbours how much fun you are having and invite newcomers to join you with an article and photos. If you belong to a homeowners or ratepayers association, use this magazine to inform neighbours of association events, neighbourhood activities, yard sales, new officers, meeting minutes, contact info for board members or other announcements.

The process is easy. You send us your ideas or recommend neighbours, and we will talk with you, write the article and gather photos. Go to www.bestversionmedia.com and click “Submit Content.” Or, simply e-mail your content coordinator at rforzley@ bestversionmedia.com. Remember, we want stories featuring you and your neighbours! Together we can bring neighbours together, stay connected and create an informative, family-friendly forum through your magazine. As families serving families, we respect your wish for privacy. Submissions are shared only within your neighbourhood magazine.

Honey, We’re Taking the Kids

By Christine Macdougall, Expedia CruiseShipCenters Traveling alone involves a carry-on, a good book and a comfy neck pillow for napping. Traveling with little ones, on the other hand, involves a trunk full of baggage, many coloring books and definitely no siestas. No matter how excited kids may be for their holiday, being stuck in a plane or car seat for hours en route is going to wear on their feelings, not to mention the parents’ sanity. But knowing how to prepare can ensure a stress-free trip so that vacation is nothing but smooth sailing. Preventing boredom is the first key to keeping outbursts to a minimum. Wired. com contributor Sarah Pinault suggests parents bring new toys and books on trips because they will seize and hold children’s attention more effectively than something they have played with before. Allowing kids to watch TV or play games on a smartphone or tablet, even if technology is mostly offlimits at home, is an exception parents may want to make. Kids are also bound to get hungry and restless during travel. The cure for hunger? Conde Nast Traveler’s Debbie Dubrow recommends packing plenty of healthy, filling snacks like string cheese and dried fruit as an alternative to unappealing airplane food. To cut down on the squirms,

10

Dubrow also suggests pre-trip exercise. Parents should take their kids to the playground or encourage them to run and jump around before getting in the car or plane. Another option are kid-friendly cruise lines which promise low stress, big style fun with a wonderful balance of family togetherness, kids-only time and grown-up downtime. Other positives to cruising: getting to visit different destinations without the packing-schlepping-unpacking cycle, and not having to worry about finding somewhere to eat or how much dinner will cost. The first step is finding out what’s right for your family. Consider what you want to get out of your cruise. How much time will the kids spend in the kids’ club? Will you require

onboard babysitting services? Is there a good mix of kid appeal and adult activities? The most family-friendly ships boast truly amazing facilities, quality entertainment and state-of-the-art kids’ clubs. Part of the travel preparation process, however, is also accepting that there will probably be bumps in the road. As Expedia CruiseShipCenters owner Christine Macdougall comments, parents should pack their sense of humor and perspective alongside other travel essentials. Visit with one of our agents in person at the Expedia Cruiseship Center office at 5768 East Boulevard, on the phone at 604-266-1118 or email us at kerrisdale@cruiseshipcenters.com.

Families are Key to Preventing Senior Hospitalizations By Dennis Fancy, Home Instead Senior Care

A conversation with Dr. Carolyn Clevenger, recognized expert in gerontology and healthy aging from Emory University, discusses the importance of families in preventing hospitalizations: Q. How can a caregiver help seniors prevent hospitalization? A. Many times seniors may be resistant to outside assistance. But they should realize support could, in turn, help them avoid a higher level of care. One local hospital partnered with a home health agency to look at re-admissions. They found that if a senior wasn’t feeling well and canceled a visit one day, she likely was in the emergency room the next day. Someone checking in, paying a visit, sharing a meal . . . could help prevent hospitalizations. It’s also important for seniors to have someone to watch for red flags, advocate for them and give them a support system. Q. How much do lifestyle factors We’re by your side so your loved one can stay at home. come into play? A. Research has Companionship Personal Care Light Housekeeping Respite Care shown that people Medication Reminders who remain active Shopping and Errands over a lifetime Meal Preparation 604-432-1139 decline for a shorter span of www.homeinstead.com/3037 Each Home Instead Senior Care franchise office is independently time. The more owned and operated.

The dream of most seniors is to remain living in their own homes. A hospitalization could put this dream in jeopardy. Delaying or avoiding medical care is the most common thing that puts seniors at risk of hospitalization. A survey of nurses who specialize in senior care revealed that the three top reasons that seniors do not comply with doctor’s orders are: unwillingness to change their ways, denial of health issues and apathy. The full results of the survey can be found at www.PreventSeniorHospitalizations.ca. What is the key to convincing older loved ones to take care of themselves? It’s family! Nearly 100% of the nurses surveyed agree that the family’s role in keeping seniors healthy and out of the hospital is as important as that of the medical community.

12

that seniors can be active and doing the things they consider functional, means the shorter decline at the end of life. Seniors who live alone should be intentional about social interaction, because when you go out you tend to be more active. When you eat with others your appetite is better and emotional well-being is improved. Q. How can family caregivers help advocate for seniors’ loved ones who go into the hospital? A. When someone is sick, they’re not focused on individual symptoms and they’re in no mood to talk about their medical history. If your senior loved one goes to the emergency room, medical professionals are looking to you as part of a patient’s support system. In fact, that has a lot to do with whether they discharge someone to go home. ER providers need to make decisions quickly. Having the family member there helps determine what exists in the home, what’s been going on and long-term history. Sadly, less than half of seniors have a medical advocate. If you know an older adult who needs someone to serve as a second set of eyes and ears at doctor’s appointments, or needs help at home with medication reminders and assistance preparing nutritious meals, contact the local Home Instead Senior Care office at (604) 432-1139

FOOD and Wine

Bryan Velve's LAMB MARINADE

By Bryan Velve

Suggested Wine Pairing for this Months Recipe from our friends at West Coast LC - 5503 West Blvd.

Chateau D’Angles Classique 2010 and Chateau D’Angles Grand Vin 2008 are great value and will pair wonderfully with grilled lamb. These wines are made from Syrah for its blackcurrant flavours, Carignan for its personality, Mourvèdre giving them longevity and full bodied tannins and the Grenache Noir adding smoothness. Flavours of chocolate , leather, deep plums and blueberry, a little earth and just plain delicious. The Grand Vin is crafted from selected plots of the vineyard. It is nursed in oak barrels to develop a wonderful aromatic complexity of ripe fruit and spices on a silky structure.”

INGREDIENTS

• One cup of Greek Spice • Half a cup of olive oil • Once cup of Dijon Mustard • 1/4 cup of fresh rosemary chopped • 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice • tsp salt • tsp fresh ground pepper

DIRECTIONS

• Put ingredients into a large zip loc bag and mix together the ingredients. • Place lamb chops or rack of lamb in the bag and massage the ingredients so the meat is covered. • Put in refridgerate for a day. Pull it out 2 hours before cooking. • Place the lamb on your BBQ grill and grill it to medium rare or your desired flavour. • Allow the meat to rest for 7 mins and serve. You can increase the amounts of ingredients for more meat. The important thing is that there is enough to cover the meat. Hope you enjoy!!

PICTURE VASE:

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom! By Tori S. Bevens his was a fun way to spend an afternoon with my kids. At two and four years old and armed with their smocks, the painting was by far their favorite part. Take care to spray paint outside, and enjoy their expressions when this project comes to life and they see their little faces in the frame window.

Some MYTHS about Pet Adoption and the TRUTH As a certified pet sitter, I often counsel my clients on how to find their next pet. Here is my advice: if you are looking to add a furry or feathered family member, start at your local animal shelter. Many folks wrongly believe that their shelter has only mixed-breed dogs and cats. Not only that, many believe those dogs and cats are all sick and ill tempered. This could not be further from the truth. All types of animals find themselves at shelters through no fault of their own. Shelters have not only excellent, mixed-breed, potential family members, but also purebred dogs and cats of every size and type, such as poodles, German shepherds, cocker spaniels, Labrador retrievers, Lhasa Apsos and many others; and

for cat folks, there are Himalayans, Persians, Maine coons, Siamese and many more. Your shelter also has many other types of animals waiting for new homes, including birds, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, mice and reptiles. Most shelters pre-screen all their animals through health exams and temperament testing before clearing them for adoption, ensuring they are ready for new homes. Before you choose a pet for yourself or your family, you should do some research so you understand your potential new family member’s needs. Educate yourself about the animal’s size when mature, lifespan, energy level, diet, health concerns and especially maintenance requirements such as bathing, ear cleaning, brushing and exercise requirements.

Some good sources of information are your pet sitter, veterinarian and behaviorist or trainer. Have patience, it may take some time for you to find the perfect pet – but the reward will be worth the wait.
