Local Broker Goes the Extra Mile By Richard Forsley
Lawrence Kennedy is an insurance broker at Rand & Fowler Insurance Agencies, a community based firm offering insurance products for home, business, auto and life. 4
Most of us have no clear idea of what a broker does so let’s start with a little bit of basic information. Insurance brokers are independent business people who bring customers and insurance companies into a contractual relationship. Brokers manage all aspects of the insurance transaction by advising the client, arranging and invoicing the policy and facilitating claims. “Basically we provide consumers with choice in the marketplace,” says Kennedy, “by selling insurance products from more than one single company. With our experience and knowledge of the industry, we are able to identify and protect consumers from exposure to risk that they face. “We also service the portfolios of existing clients and work with new clients to bring July 2016
them on board. Most importantly, we help our clients deal with loss by ensuring the claims process moves as quickly and efficiently as possible.” What skills does it actually take to make a broker successful? Experience in any one of several areas can lead to a successful career in the insurance industry. Sales: Prior sales experience may be essential to success. Although certifications and/or the Insurance Institute’s Chartered Insurance Insurance Professional (CIP) designation are required for brokers, many employers encourage people with sales experience to apply to these positions, provided they show willingness to go through the licensing process.
Mechanic: Surprisingly experience as a mechanic gives an
individual specialized knowledge of the risk inherent in owning and operating a vehicle and could make them well-suited to help people with their automobile insurance needs. Or you may own your own shop, giving you the entrepreneurial skills necessary to eventually operate your own brokerage. Experience working with the public and explaining complicated repairs may help in explaining insurance policies and practices to clients. Again a broker must be licensed.
Manufacturing: Knowledge of manufacturing with specialized knowledge of the risks inherent in operating a manufacturing facility can help people understand the risks and fit them with the right insurance coverage. Agriculture: Lastly, another unusual asset for a broker might be experience in agriculture with the knowledge of the processes and procedures involved in a farming operation. Specialized knowledge of the risks in owning and operating a farm could be well-suited to help clients choose the right insurance coverage. “Rand and Fowler is the oldest Insurance Brokerage in BC dating Neighbours of Kerrisdale
back to 1883. The business was under family control until 1986 when it was purchased by our current owner,” Kennedy says. “I’ve been involved with the company since 1996, becoming a partner in 2006. “Philosophically we see ourselves as a community insurance brokerage. That may mean assisting a client by staying late in the office or by dropping auto insurance off at their residence, We pride ourselves on customer attention and satisfaction even going as far as driving a customer to ICBC for assistance with the claims process. “I remember once we had a young neighbour and UBC student who had a car stolen. We drove that person to the towing yard but the car wouldn’t start. As part of our focus on service, we waited at the tow yard to make sure they were safe, going so far as to pay the towing bill to get the car home rather than pay for rental space at the towing yard. “Ultimately it’s about good service and helping our clients as much as possible. Some of our best moments have been assisting our friends track their lost pets,” he says. “Sometimes they end up on my front door where we always welcome them with treats and fresh water. These are the kinds of things I enjoy most about my job.” Outside of his job, Kennedy focuses his attention on Zuka, his Rhodesian Ridgeback. “He often spends the day with me and can often be seen sitting in the window of my office. I enjoy my day much more when he’s around to keep me company.” For more information on Rand & Fowler, go to lawrencek@randandfowler.com Do you know a neighbour who has a story to share? Reimagine Azamara. It’s here. By Christine Macdougall Expedia Cruiseshipcenter, Kerrisdale Experience the incredible transformations onboard the voyage for those who love travel. Real authentic travel is at the heart of every Azamara Club Cruises® voyage. With Azamara’s signature Destination Immersion®, guests can enjoy longer stays, more overnights, and night touringSM in exciting destinations all over the world. But with the recent Reimagine Azamara initiative, Azamara’s newest destination is right onboard. Over the past many months, the Azamara team has been working to bring major transformations to their boutique club-like ships – Azamara Journey® and Azamara Quest®. Both ships recently emerged from dry dock with innovative transformations from bow to stern, and the results are nothing short of stunning.
Lose 5-10lbs and 10-15” in just one week
From the reimagined design, to new cuisine, to innovative onboard experiences, the goal of these transformations was to bring the essence of Destination Immersion® to life on the ship in fresh and inventive ways. The design elements onboard drew inspiration from the incredible destinations guests will visit on their voyage as well as the four elements of nature: Earth, water, air, and fire. Stepping onto the reimagined ship and into the main lobby on Deck 4 for the first time, guests will immediately get a feel for the destination-inspired updates. The new carpets and furnishings feature a muted yet elegant color palette of earth tones, evoking a sense of walking along a sandy beach on the shores of Sydney, or

But that is only the first impression, and as guests continue to travel through the rest of the ship, the experience only gets better. Every stateroom onboard has received the reimagined touch, with a similar design, new lighting, fresh linens, updated wall coverings, custom fabrics, and contemporary furniture. The revitalized bathrooms may be the most transcendent of changes, with the rich wood grains and renovated flooring creating a feel of your favorite boutique hotel. Common areas, entertainment venues, and dining locations have all received the reimagined touch as well. The Living Room, Azamara’s space for live music, cocktails, and catching up on a novel with an oceanside view, represents a masterful transformation indicative of the full reimagine experience. Beautiful carpets invite guests into the space immediately and the new contemporary furniture provides plenty of seating options for those looking to lounge or converse with friends. It’s impossible to capture the full Reimagine Azamara experience in a few words and pictures, and nothing quite compares to the feeling of witnessing these transformations in person during a voyage to some of the world’s most intriguing destinations.
