BENDRICK '80 INFLUENTIAL ON NASA MEDIC AL RESEARCH
Gregg Bendrick ’80
With such a strong fundamental educational base, Marian Catholic alumni have many success stories in their professional careers. However, few span the infinite distance of 1980 graduate Gregg Bendrick, M.D. whose travels have included several major U.S. cities and a four-year stint as an Emergency Medical Physician in Japan. As a civil servant with NASA, his work extends beyond the planet, returning to impact many on earth in regard to medicine. As the Medical Director of the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., Bendrick serves as the designated Flight Surgeon performing flight physicals on NASA test pilots. He is also the Emergency Medical Services Coordinator for the Space Shuttle when circumstances mandate a landing at Edwards AFB. In one of his most intriguing experiences, Bendrick handled the Return-To-Flight Space Shuttle (STS-114) when it landed at Edwards. This landing was the first flight after the Columbia tragedy and had problems that it had to overcome on its own flight. Because there was also a Japanese crew member on this flight, Bendrick had a great deal of interaction with a Flight Surgeon from the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency. Along with handling post-flight physicals, Bendrick coordinated efforts with several entities before, during, and after landing. He communicated with the Johnson Space Center in Houston, the
Department of Defense Flight Surgeon in Florida and several local hospitals and emergency response forces. As the Shuttle was prepared to be flown back to Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Bendrick moved to the Post-Flight Science Support Facility where astronauts undergo their post-physical exams. Then he focused his attention on the "Orbiter Turn-Around" operations, where the maintenance crews clean out the Shuttle vehicle and empty all the various rocket fuels. “This turnaround operation was among the most interesting things I've done here," Bendrick explained. Bendrick has certainly done some interesting things. Following his education and medical school at University of Chicago, he entered active duty with the Air Force for nine years and was stationed in Japan, San Antonio, TX and Shreveport, LA. After separating from the Air Force, he worked at the Oschner Clinic in New Orleans. While Marian Catholic has yet to send a graduate into space, Bendrick's work is certainly as important. As Bendrick talks about his alma mater, it sounds as if the preparation created limitless opportunities. "Marian provided me the moral compass by which I could maintain my heading in life," Bendrick recalled. "Were it not for my faith, I would not have pursued a career in medicine or civil service with the government. There are many secular influences that try to lead people in many directions away from God. Marian Catholic provides the moral compass and the skills necessary for young people to make those critical choices that will set the path for the rest of their lives. "The academic excellence of Marian enabled me to become a lifelong learner. Education at the high school level has to go beyond the mere conveyance of facts that will be obsolete in ten years. Education really has to develop the skills of logical and critical thought in order for students to become life-long learners. Frankly, the voice and direction that a Catholic high school like Marian provides is absolutely vital in the development of life-long learners." While Bendrick already possesses a lifetime of experiences in helping others, he remains ambitious with lofty goals. "One of the historians and I want to write a book that looks at the human factors associated with some of the mishaps and close calls throughout the history of the Dryden Flight Research Center," Bendrick explained. There were a number of human factors to consider, and we'd like to get some of these lessons learned down in writing so other folks don't make the same mistakes."

NEW SPORTS STIR IMMEDIATE POPULARITY
In its fourth year, Marian water polo has earned strong recognition by teaching new players like Anna Moorman ’07 the finer points of the game. New in 2005, LaCrosse immediately became popular at marian with both men and women.
Fencing is Marian’s newest sport, but already a very popular one. Mike Muszynski ’08 shows his style.
Despite having one of the strongest men’s and women’s athletic programs in the Chicago area, Marian Catholic isn’t ready to allow the grass to grow under its feet. Or in the pool or at the end of a foil for that matter. New sports continue to emerge at Marian, most notably men’s and women’s lacrosse and women’s water polo. The 2005-06 school year also sees men’s and women’s fencing debut at Marian. All three of the infant entities have brought strong excitement and participation. Lacrosse is the fastest growing team sport in America, and that’s no exception at Marian, where parent Mike McCormick got the men’s program rolling in 2004 and a women’s program is in the building process as well. "What impressed me the most about our inaugural fencing season was how quickly the kids learned their new skill and how much they enjoyed it! With their enthusiasm and dedication, they took on a new activity and progressed substantially in just one season. In the same spirit I've witnessed in other Marian activities, this group of fencers worked together to improve and support one another. I think it's wonderful that Marian has a fencing club. There's something for everyone here. Allowing the students to start up this emerging sport at Marian Catholic underscores the administration's continual support of their students' interests," Michelle Feldner Lancaster ’77 explained. “This high level of interest is nothing but a positive for Marian,” McCormick said. “Since lacrosse is a spring sport and there are not as many team sport options in the spring, more students have an opportunity to get physically fit, compete in a team environment and
perhaps, most importantly, learn new skills that can transcend high school into college and beyond.” After a trial campaign in 2004, Marian men’s lacrosse posted a 9-2 record last spring and will compete as an IHSA “emerging sport” this spring. The women’s squad anticipates building a small schedule and following the same path. “The fact that Marian Catholic is one of the first Catholic high schools in the state to make the sport available to students is a testimony to the commitment of the Administration and Athletic Department to the student body,” McCormick explained. “Because of that commitment, students at Marian Catholic can now be part of “the fastest game on two feet.” With the program less than a half-year old, Fencing has already drawn tremendous interest from participants, fans and the student body. Marian compiled a challenging schedule for men and women, one that has already produced some rivalries and new friendships. Under the faculty guidance of Sr. Dorothy Marie, strong student leadership (and founders) and a supportive group of parent coaches, the Spartan fencers have produced some immediate success even beyond expectations. “Fencing was student-initiated and so a big value was the students took the leadership role in getting the team started and continue to take that role as the team emerges during this first year,” Sr. Dorothy Marie explained. “The students have learned a lot about organization and following appropriate procedure to obtain approval for the team. As the year continued, they met the challenges of a first-year program and learned to deal with setbacks and successes. “We never thought, at the beginning for example, that we would progress to the point of getting invited to championship fencing at
2
Maine West on Feb. 4, but we were. That was an indication for us of the success our students had as first-year fencers. Anything that is new and anything that the students learn is of value. Also, of value is that many of these students would not be involved in a physical activity if they hadn’t become involved in fencing.” Women’s swimming has enjoyed success at Marian for a few years. Now, that has spilled over to the Spartan women’s water polo team. While most athletes lack experience when entering the program, the turnaround from first-time learning to success has been remarkable. “The first year, the team practiced two or three times a week and played a few scrimmages against junior varsity teams,” Coach Sean Scanlon related. “The second year, the team played a full varsity and junior varsity schedule, and by the end of the season, had won its first playoff game in the IHSA Sectional, and earned a Top 20 ranking in Illinois. The third year the team was seeded fourth in the IHSA Sectional and fell to Andrew in five overtimes.” Marian swimmers and water polo athletes also display an added commitment even with no pool at the school. Yet, conditioning often begins at 6:30 a.m. and practicing and competing at all away venues doesn’t seem to concern this group of Spartans. “We start every year by teaching our new players the game, the skills, and sometimes how to swim properly,” Scanlon explained. “This is the first year that Marian will have players who have three years of experience, so we hope to take the next step and play in the sectional finals. This has been our team goal since we started the team–to finish in the Sweet 16 and earn a banner in the gym.”

friends while watching some great basketball games,” according to committee member Ed Ziltz ’80. “For the price, it’s well worth it for the fun and to see so many people. There will also be some outstanding food, great silent auction items and an opportunity for everyone to go home a winner.” Tickets for the event are only $25 and feature unlimited food and drink, as well as loads of fun. Marian Madness is co-sponsored by the Alumni Association and Marian Athletics, and will also feature games of chance and several exciting silent auction items. The fund-raising and friend-raising event will benefit Marian Athletics. Marian Madness can’t ensure the local flavor of a University of Illinois semifinal victory this year, but it can guarantee a great evening of fun and excitement for all.
COERS PIECE PUBLISHED Marian’s own Mike Coers, Director of Percussion, has had an original percussion score for percussion ensemble published. Coers submitted “Swimmin’ In It,” to drop 6 Media, Inc., a music publishing company located in Denton, Texas last fall. “Swimmin’ In It” is the first of several percussion pieces Coers has written. “The melody literally wrote itself in one sitting” he said. “All the elements of the piece were put on paper in a period of two days.” He hopes to have more of his compositions published in the near future. Mike has been with the award winning MCHS band since 2000. 3

ROUNDBALL MEN, WOMEN SPIN RECORD-SETTING CAMPAIGNS Records are made to be broken! The Marian men’s and women’s basketball teams certainly took that to heart in their 2005-06 seasons. For the women’s basketball team, the Spartans became the only school in the state to qualify for four IHSA Class AA Elite Eights in the last five years when Marian improved to 4-0 in its last four Sweet 16 appearances with its 71-58 victory over Sandburg in the UIC Supersectional. The win also improved Marian to a 49-1 five-year record against its SICA/SouthWest Suburban rival schools. The Spartans fell to eventual fourth-place team Maine South in the state quarterfinals at ISU’s Redbird Arena, but completed the year with a 23-10 mark with Maine West and Hillcrest titles to go with IHSA regional, sectional and supersectional crowns. Marian’s state run was led by seniors Katy Clark, Kathlyn McClain and Melanie Moore, while several young Spartans gained valuable experience for some bright future campaigns. The squad was led by firstyear head coach Annie Basic, the older sister of former Marian standout Mary Basic ’03. The men’s basketball squad rewrote the Marian record books as well. A third-place finish in Marian’s own Chicago Heights Classic and a fifth place at the Big Dipper were signs of great things to come. Once postseason arrived, the records began to fall. A regional victory over Lincoln-Way Central, the Spartans’ 21st, broke the school record for wins. Then a regional final decision over Rich East gave Marian its second IHSA regional championship in 46 years and the first in 15 years. “The leadership of our seniors (Vance Cooksey, Zack Stevenson, Steve Udowitz, Mike Brooks, Johnny Jones and C.J. Tuskan) through example and work ethic has meant a lot to our success,” third-year coach Mike Taylor explained. “Our energy and enthusiasm in our practice and game preparation has been a great example to our underclassmen. “The support of our student body has been incredible–by far the best since I have been here. I believe the team and crowd have fed off each other and brought a lot of excitement to Casey Court. In turn we have noticed increased attendance from the local grammar schools, which truly makes it a community event.” Sparked by all-conference players Stevenson and Cooksey (who eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier and moved into Marian’s top five all-time scorers), the Spartans earned a second-place finish in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Wrestling brought great news this year as well. Along with former IHSA state champion and NCAA standout Joe Gilbert moving in as the Spartan head coach, the grapplers converted Marian’s East Gym stage into a state-of-the-art wrestling facility. Marian Athletic Director and football coach Dave Mattio ’66 received great news when he was inducted into the inaugural ESCC Hall of Fame on March 9. Marian’s AD for 31 years and football coach for 30 joins a prolific first class of 16 that includes Joliet Catholic’s Gordie Gillespie, St. Joseph’s Isiah Thomas and Gene Pingatore, as well as NFL standouts Mike Alstott (Joliet Catholic) and Jeff Zgonina (Carmel).

Shonda Rhimes ’87
If you were one of 38 million people who watched Grey’s Anatomy after the Superbowl, what you may not know is that the show’s creator, executive producer and writer is Shonda Rhimes, a 1987 Marian graduate. Grey’s Anatomy has been nominated for multiple Emmys, Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards since it first aired in early 2005, and has garnered both a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding female performance by actress Sandra Oh. However, Ms. Rhimes has other credits on her long list of accomplishments. She researched and wrote the teleplay for Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, starring Halle Berry, who won a Golden Globe and a Screen
As a student at Marian, Shonda was active in band, playing the oboe, various percussion instruments and was in the flag corp. She fondly remembers the impact that Greg Bimm and the band made in her life. “You can’t be in the marching band at Marian without spending an extraordinary amount of time learning the routines. Even if you didn’t want to be (at the school) working three hours a day, you knew what the results of hard work meant.” She applies the same principles of hard work and persistence in her hectic professional life. Trying to balance work and family (she has an adopted daughter) is not easy. “In a lot of ways, you don’t balance. You just try to mush it all together and hope it works. My daughter comes to work with me as much as possible and we spend a lot of time together on the weekends. I just try to make the concept that her mother works a part of her life, so she gets it that that’s what mothers do.”

Julia Rohaly Buckley ’83 has written The Dark Backward, a murder-mystery due out in May. She says that thanks to Sr. Roselle and Mr. Wooddell’s senior AP English class she learned the concepts of writing, revision, adhering to deadlines and responsibility. Buckley, who lives in suburban Oak Park with her husband and two sons, also teaches at Trinity Catholic High School. In her writing, she tries to reflect what the world is with realism. Buckley’s writing includes elements of all other great literature. In addition to The Dark Backward, Julia has sold the first in a series of other stories called the Madeline Mann Mysteries. The second book in the series is under consideration at this time. To learn more about Julia and to read the prologue to The Dark Backward, visit www.juliabuckley.com.

MCHS has been a supportive stepping stone for each of our children as they learn to find their place in the world. VISION FOR MCHS FUTURE:
My hope is for MCHS to continually move forward as a leader not only in the academic world, but also in extracurricular activities. Whether through sports, music, or a variety of club activities, learning and maturing into leaders also takes place outside the classroom. We need to be aware of that and be thoughtful in organizing activities outside the classroom to help mentor our students to become the best that they can be.
LONG RANGE PLAN ROLLING INTO ACTION integration of technology, critical thinking, and curriculum by design. “While Marian’s academic program continues to excel, we continuously evaluate our program to better meet the needs of our students. Currently we are focusing on critical reading skills and problem solving within the curriculum,” explains Sr. Kathleen Anne Tate, Marian Catholic Principal.
PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES An alumni trip to Italy, outreach in and out of the metro area, and a revised reunion protocol are all on the plate of new Alumni Relations Coordinator Gail Young. Young said, "My goal is to try and encourage alumni and their families to attend events, help them reconnect with former classmates, and instill in them a sense of pride and loyalty to their high school that rivals their pride and loyalty to their college or university. I believe that each and every graduate of Marian has received an exceptional educational gift…every graduate of Marian Catholic High School has a story; about a class, an athletic team, a teacher, the band, the Dominican Sisters – something or someone has touched their life in a profound manner that they remember. How terrific is it that there are over 15,700 people out there with stories that have Marian Catholic as a common thread?”
Laura Docherty counsels college-bound Seniors in the Guidance Department.
Eighteen months after the Long-Range Plan and nine months after the development of the Strategic Action Plans to put them in effect, the shape of the future is emerging—in the details. “Choosing to implement those items of the Strategic Action Plans which we could fund through ‘human capital’ and tuition is a matter of justice and gives energy to Marian Catholic’s halls,” notes Sr. M. Paul McCaughey ’67, MCHS President. “The Advisory Board, the staff, and the faculty are on the same page. The feeling is, ‘Let’s do it.’”
FAITH AND SERVICE An emphasis has been placed on reduced class sizes in Theology, the creation of “sacred space” in Dominican Way, increasing the number of Eucharistic celebrations for students, an examination and strengthening of Catholicity in the curriculum, and outreach to local parishes through publicizing opportunities open to ministry in parishes. While many parishes could say the same, St. John the Evangelist in St. John, Indiana responded to the survey with a concrete listing of current student involvement:
Since the approval of the last of the Strategic Action Plans in Spring 2005, these “details” have had an impact.
GUIDANCE/COLLEGE COUNSELING With the addition of Ms. Laura Docherty, who joins us from Loyola Academy, the college counseling staff has grown to three full-time professionals and one part-time professional with a combined 50+ years of college counseling experience. FINANCE
ACADEMICS
Marian Catholic continues to improve current facilities using funded depreciation, and provides student aid through endowed scholarships, emergency aid from the Annual Fund and, most significantly, from the Dominican Sisters of Springfield.
The PowerSchool Program allows parents and students to access a student’s “real-time” grades and, while printed reports are still being mailed, the use of email for newsletters and bulletins hold tremendous potential.
An intense effort to fund physical facilities and the increased need for aid is in process and is essential to the completion of the “capital” goals of the action plan.
Marian Catholic High School continues to emphasize and prepare hundreds of students for A.P. (Advanced Placement Program) courses, and increased funds for professional development have emphasized
“In many ways,” says Sr. M. Paul, “we have truly only just begun.”

SPARTAN HEARTS LEFT IN SAN FRANCISCO...HEADING FOR NAPA
Mary Moffatt, Julie Molander ’70, Sr. Mary Paul McCaughey and Lori Henry Potter ’70 enjoy visiting during a recent California Spartan trip.
When a Board Meeting for the Dominican Association of Secondary Schools called Sr. Paul ’67 to the Bay Area, she "knew Marian had to seize the moment" and contact alumni in and near San Francisco in response to the recent Long Range Plan calling for national alumni outreach. Mary Moffatt, former MCHS Vice President for Advancement, was instrumental in making the northern California connections. "Our alumni were happy to reminisce about classmates, Sisters, coaches and teachers and share their stories about relocation, careers, family life and the lifelong impact of MCHS ," said Mary Moffatt. Most gratifying to Moffatt and Sr. Paul was the alumni interest to focus on the present-day Marian mission and relate that to the global Catholic, college prep educational challenges. In their brief time near the Golden Gate, Sr. Paul and Mary were blessed to be able to touch base with great alums. "All our contacts were warmly received and our alums traveled, they made the time for us, and they gifted us with ideas for the future," Sr. Paul noted.

The consensus is that there is tremendous potential for all the Marian Catholic grads on the West Coast to get together, watch for ideas from this first trip to take root in a fun context next Spring '07 in Napa Valley. In fact, we have new guests for the August 14 '06 Endowment Golf Classic –with many planning to attend or come along for the golf cart ride. Thank you very much to all who answered the call during our 2006 Phonathon to pledge $72,000 to the Annual Fund. This amount does not include “decisions,” those who may yet participate but who are not committed to a pledge amount. These “your decisions” are being received daily (last year totaling over $31,000). Funds raised this year for the Annual Fund will be targeted for Sr. Simeon’s Emergency Tuition Fund and other MCHS programs as may be restricted by donors. Thanks to you, we will surpass our Phonathon ’06 goal of $75,500. Last year’s goal of $72,500 was surpassed with yet another record, collecting $92,507!

CAN YOU PICTURE YOURSELF HERE ON MAY 8, 2006? What is the Career Day Program?
Alumni parent Kevin McNulty, President/CEO of The Chicago Southland Chamber of Commerce (left) looks on as Teri Brenner, 2005 Chairperson of the Board is being honored by incoming Chairman of the Board, Joe Christofanelli, Jr. ’80.
Joe Christofanelli Jr. ’80 was recently named Chairman of the Board of the Chicago Southland Chamber of Commerce, a group comprised of business, educational and municipal leaders covering 84 communities in the Southland region. Christofanelli is no stranger to public service, having served as the Village Administrator for the Village of Glenwood for five years, and prior to that, as City Planner for the City of Chicago Heights. He is currently a manager for Ernst and Young, LLP, working in state and local tax practice and provides economic development incentives advice for clients. When asked about his “Marian Experience,” Joe said he appreciates the impact his well-rounded education has had in his life. “Even though we were forced to take some courses, the overall results were terrific. Being exceptionally well prepared for college and beyond is something difficult to appreciate at the time.” He also expressed his appreciation for the MCHS Administration’s push for service outside the school, a way of giving back without reward. “Service becomes part of who you are as a person, a way of life.”

The goal of Career Day is to offer a variety of presentations that will expose freshman and sophomore students to several career interests. Marian Catholic alumni, parents and friends are able to lend a valuable insight to current Marian students in their career choices, giving them the chance to see inside a prospective career. Each speaker will address three sessions of students, each group for approximately 20 minutes including discussion and questions. Presentations are very informal, considering that this is the first opportunity students have to hear about certain careers.
How Does the Career Mentor Program Work? Marian Catholic alumni volunteer to spend time at their workplace with a junior or senior student who has indicated an interest in their particular career field. A typical day might include a tour of the mentor's workplace, discussion about what the mentor does and how they achieved success in their respective career. In addition, students may have the opportunity to interview with other people in the company and receive some hands-on experience. The Career Mentor visits may take place anytime during the school year that is convenient for our alums. Students are given an excused absence from Marian and will provide their own transportation.
