COLLEGE DAY Young Alums offer keen insights for current students

More than 40 young alums took time out during their winter break to share their insights on life and higher education with Marian Catholic juniors and seniors on College Day, January 9. During an informative session, the students exchanged their views on a wide range of topics including dorm life, class selection, and how well Marian prepared them for their college experience.

Deana Williams ’12, Miami University, OH, explained her take on the day: “I was surprised and impressed with all the questions students asked throughout the day,” she said. “I think we were able to talk about many of the concerns students have when they are thinking about college. Ranging from academic difference compared to high school, to living in the dorms, I think sharing our experiences helped students understand the dynamics of college.”

Stanley Pearson, II ’98 held a personal leadership and motivation forum at Marian Catholic on March 11. The interactive, energetic presentation for students at an all school assembly created a safe environment in which to analyze how they approach personal relationships, day-to-day situations, and their general outlook on life.

“I am glad I had the opportunity to speak with Marian students,” he said. “I personally had a memorable experience as a student at Marian Catholic. I remember being very busy with band and football. The band won Grand Nationals twice while I was at Marian. I had the opportunity to meet many people and create great friendships.”

Stanley began his presentation by explaining his issues with self-identification. In high school and in college, peers labeled Stanley by his appearance.

After soul-searching and reaching a breaking point, he had enough with labeling and was determined to speak out.

Stanley is a professional motivational speaker who specializes in leadership and diversity. His programs present participants with an opportunity to understand one another. College campuses and high schools, military bases, and businesses, have invited Stanley to give presentations.

“Everyday I have a new experience that further shapes my future existence. I am aware that events in the past have shaped my future, so I work towards a better understanding of things that have happened and things that will happen,” explains Pearson. “Acceptance has so much to do with how we handle events in our lives. We deal with accepting ourselves, seeking out acceptance, and being able to accept others.”

Stanley believes that we all have a responsibility to ourselves, and the people around us, to handle situations better each day and grow from them.

“She is expert in relationship building, steeped in the vision of the institution, tireless in bringing people together to accomplish the goal of taking the community to the next level,” McCaughey said. “She has a solid grasp of all aspects of the office operation but her value in engaging the support of major donors is priceless.”

Moffatt looks forward to transitioning her role at Marian Catholic to a successor who will share her passion and continue the Advancement Mission to secure the resources, both human and capital, to help the school realize its mission and vision.

Moffatt’s plans include independent work as a strategist of major gift and capital programs for Catholic education.

Marian Catholic High School says goodbye this month to an alumni parent, longtime Advancement professional and all-around champion for the school. Mary Moffatt, Vice President, Advancement, has resigned her position effective the end of May. Mary Moffatt’s ties to the school are both personal and professional.

She and her husband, Bill, are the parents of three grown children who are Marian Catholic alumni. She has served Marian Catholic in various leadership capacities since 1993, both volunteer and professional.

Reflecting on a career spanning more than 20 years (including a three-year hiatus), Moffatt describes her tenure as an Advancement professional at MCHS as “A great run! Twice.”

A great run indeed. Under her watch, Marian Catholic High School launched two capital campaigns, expanded annual giving programs and revitalized alumni relations and the Alumni Association. In addition to developing and maintaining hundreds of constituent relationships on behalf of the school – a role she describes as “a privilege” – Moffatt facilitated board leadership and partnered with school leaders to spearhead two long-range plans.

In doing so, Moffatt helped generate more than $20 million in major gift revenue to ensure a strong and vibrant school well into the future. Many members of the Marian Catholic family credit the school’s financial stability, beyond the tuition driven operating income, in large part to Moffatt and the board’s stewardship and governance. Her accomplishments include fundraising initiatives that made possible major facility improvements, scholarships and academic program enhancements.

Alumni parent and member of the MCHS Board of Directors, Nancy Rita Kaz, recalls the days before such campus improvements.

Her children attended MCHS in the 1980’s. “You better believe I’ve seen changes,” Kaz remarked. She attributes much of her involvement in recent years to Moffatt’s ability to engage alumni families like hers whose children have moved beyond Marian.

“Mary is very good at that,” Kaz commented. She followed quickly with the statement “Although no one ever really leaves Marian!”

Moffatt is quick to acknowledge the contributions of parent and alumni organizations, the faculty and staff and the Dominican Sisters of Springfield in fulfilling the living mission of Marian Catholic: Teaching Scholars with a Soul. While she helped create and maintain a comprehensive fund development and public relations operation for MCHS Advancement, the staff is an obvious point of pride. In a letter to the board and administration, she expressed confidence in the ability of the advancement team to “continue to serve the school’s Advancement mission without skipping a beat.”

MARIAN FUND Annual Phonathon 2013 The 2013 Marian Catholic Phonathon might be remembered for interruptions by two snow storms and an unexpected school holiday to celebrate the Women’s Basketball State Championship. However, the successful event will go down in history as one that raised more than $55,000 in pledges for the Marian Fund with more “decision” gifts received each day and reaching our goal of $60,000.

Chaired by current parents Kathy and Mike Manno and Dan and Marianne Gregorovic, the Parent Phonathon connected current and past parents. A special thank you to Felicia Dupczak ’04 and Phil Werner ’11 who assisted the 116 student volunteers in the school library as they called alumni over three sessions.

During the Phonathon, volunteers reached out to more than 12,000 members of the Marian Catholic community throughout the United States.

“This event would not be a success if it weren’t for our many volunteers, current parents, past parents, alumni, and friends,” said Pat Trebe, Annual Programs Manager and Phonathon Manager. “The sessions are fun and productive, but it’s the people who volunteer who truly make it special. And, of course, the hundreds of people who ‘answered the call’ make this one of the school’s major fundraisers.”

This course is designed for students with or without programming experience who wish to learn programming techniques. Students will learn Java and explore Java variants. Lab work is required. Some outside lab work is expected.

The Technology/Media Center is fundamental to Marian Catholic’s innovative curriculum offering students the skills needed to be successful in present and future educational endeavors as they build the foundation for successful career paths.

Intro to Video Editing is a semester course which introduces students to the basics of video editing. Students develop camera skills, learn editing processes, and investigate the principles of video documentation and elements of production. Students learn to observe, to express themselves nonverbally, and to analytically solve problems by processing information visually. This course will use Apple’s iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, iDVD, and program suites.

“I heard from previous students that Intro to Video Editing was a great class and I always had an interest in editing videos. Now I am learning the basics and techniques which I find very exciting.”

"My education at Marian Catholic in the ’80s was excellent, but I was an average teenager and found myself my senior year in a few detentions and even lost all of my senior privileges,” recalls Anne Marie Korzenko McNew ’83, owner of AMK Design in Virginia. Reflecting upon her young adult experience at Marian Catholic prompted Anne Marie to commit an estate gift to the school. “In retrospect, my education and culture of [Catholic] faith at Marian was a great foundation for all I've accomplished in my adult life. Although I have no children of my own, in this Year of Faith in the Catholic Church, I realize how important Catholic education is for our faith and our young people. We, as Catholics, share this responsibility to promote our faith for the betterment of all people in this secular world. THE EAST SUBURBAN CATHOLIC CONFERENCE INDUCTS THE MARIAN CATHOLIC 1993 STATE CHAMPION FOOTBALL TEAM INTO HALL OF FAME The 1993 Marian Catholic State Champion Football Team was inducted into the East Suburban Catholic Conference (ESCC) Hall of Fame on March 7, 2013, at the Crystal Sky Banquet Hall in McCook, IL. The upbeat, family-like reunion at the ESCC Hall of Fame ceremony proved to the team that no matter how much time passes, they will always have a unique bond.

“We had a great turn-out, about a third of the team attended the ceremony,” said Terence Marable ’94. “I don’t think football talk came up all night. We were too busy catching up with one another.”

This was no surprise to Terence; these football players were not just teammates, they were friends. The tight knit team was very compatible; together they grew as athletes and as people.

“It’s easy to say that these guys are special,” said Brian VanderLuitgaren ’94.

“The relationships that were formed on and off the field still live on today.

Dana Smith ’94 was the best man at my wedding, and I often see some of my former teammates.”

The State Champs were able to fall in line, develop, and work together because they truly cared about one another and wanted to win.

“Dave Mattio ’66 pushed us to our full potential,” said VanderLuitgaren. “He was able to make everyone on the team want that same goal, to win state.” The players understood what it took to be a member of a team. The Champs learned how to be coachable, push themselves mentally, and collaborate with one another.

“The take-away from the 1993 State Championship Football Team is to make a goal, believe that the goal will be achieved, and do everything in your power to make the goal a reality. As freshmen, we knew we were going to win the State Championship because no one had an ego; everyone listened and did what our coaches said. Current student athletes need to believe that it can be done. Hard work, dedication, and visualizing the goal will result in achievement,” said Marable.

The Marian Catholic community is proud, and congratulates the 1993 Marian Catholic State Champion Football Team on receiving the ESCC Hall of Fame award.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS COMMITTEES Unifying the efforts of a governing body with the daily operations of an institution is frequently accomplished through the effective use of committee work. The Board of Directors of Marian Catholic High School has maximized this strategy by including additional committee members who are not Directors.

When the committees meet with school personnel to discuss topics and issues that impact the learning environment, it is the partnership between governance and management that allows a positive outcome to emerge.

Currently, the following persons give their time and talent by serving as non-director members on standing committees of the Board of Directors that meet regularly to effect continuous school improvement: Dr. Karen Briggs and Eileen Gallagher Daw ’78 have joined the Advancement Committee in an effort to help Marian Catholic secure the resources necessary for the school to realize its mission and vision.

Steve Tortorello ’04 offers the perspective of a past student and a current staff member of Marian Catholic as he serves enthusiastically on the Mission Integration Committee.

Dr. Millicent Borishade and Joe Boesen ’05 help to convey the message of Marian Catholic to the community through their efforts on the Public Relations/Marketing Committee.

Bill Bach ’86 brings technological expertise to a school community committed to integrating technology with core standards and classroom strategies.

Sister Mary Blaise Galloway, O.P. and Sister Dorothy Marie, O.P. promote the Dominican charism by working with the Directors Committee and the President Committee.

Each of these persons play a very important role on their respective committees by offering insights and perspectives for the governing and managerial structure of Marian Catholic High School. Their willingness to serve is a blessing for which we are grateful.

FACULTY MEMBER AND NOVELIST RELEASES THIRD BOOK English and Creative Writing teacher James Conroyd Martin’s third book has been released. The Warsaw Conspiracy is a historical novel combining features of the family saga and thriller genres.

Martin’s thirty-year tenure at Marian Catholic started in 1972-1974 when he was hired as an English teacher of freshmen and sophomores. In 1974 he moved to California in order to study screenwriting; however, he soon began working on a novel based on the actual diary of a countess who lived in 1790s Poland. Shortly after moving back to Chicago, Martin reconnected with Marian in 1985.

Publication came after a long and circuitous road, but the first novel Push Not the River, sometimes described as a Gone with the Wind set in Poland, met with great success in 2003 and is in its ninth printing. St. Martin’s Press called for a sequel and that materialized in 2006 with Against a Crimson Sky, a story highlighting the Polish lancers’ involvement with Napoleon and his fated march to Moscow. The translations of both novels became bestsellers in Poland, selling 60,000 copies.

Martin, of Irish and Norwegian descent, has received multiple awards, including a Gold medal from The American Institute of Polish Culture.

While the third novel completes the trilogy, it stands on its own; one need not have read the other two to enjoy it.

YOUNG ALUM NOMINATES MICHAEL RAFTERY FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR AWARD Marian Catholic High School English Advanced Placement teacher, Michael Raftery, was honored as an Outstanding Educator by the University of Chicago.

Summer Fields ’12 nominated Raftery for presenting her with educational opportunities that challenged and inspired her to pursue higher education.

The University of Chicago asks incoming freshmen to nominate an educator who contributed to the channeling of their private interests into productive paths for intellectual growth. Raftery has received the University of Chicago Outstanding Educator Award three times in his teaching career. His first nomination came when he was teaching

at Rich East High School, in Park Forest, the second from Marian Catholic alum, Alexander Tolish ’08.

Raftery received his Masters in General Studies in the Humanities Department with a focus on literature and history from the University of Chicago in 1980. Today he continues to take courses at U of C on Saturday mornings to ensure he is still learning, challenged, and growing. His philosophy as an educator is to provide students with the tools to think for themselves, create an arena for discussion, and to influence youth that literature is not a problem to solve, but a mystery to explore.

THE MARIAN CATHOLIC Endowment Golf Classic 2013 OLYMPIA FIELDS COUNTRY CLUB SITE OF ENDOWMENT GOLF CLASSIC September 16, 2013 The 24th Annual Endowment Golf Classic will be held at Olympia Fields Country Club and the interest in the event continues to attract nationwide attention. Metro and distance members of the Marian Catholic Community will be golfing at the renowned and historic golf course on September 16.

With the prestigious North Course and a recently renovated South Course, the event will be a dream come true for golfers on either course.

In addition to golf, the Classic will have an option for tennis players with an opportunity to play on clay courts. The $125 cost for tennis will include snacks, prizes, and the evening dinner.

Reservations will be taken online or over the phone. The EGC Committee has worked to keep the event cost at Olympia Fields an exceptional value at $295 per golfer, the same rate as past years, and will include 18-holes of golf, lunch, course refreshments, dinner, open bar, and golfer participation gifts.

Because of generous offers from two committee members who want to be sure the outing stays affordable for our young alumni, they will gift the cost difference for the first 30 Young Alums who reserve at the special rate of $195. This is the same rate as offered in past years to alumni ten years out of Marian.

MCHS HIGHLIGHTS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 4A IHSA STATE CHAMPIONS On the verge of perfection for most of the season, the Marian Catholic Women’s Basketball team couldn’t pick a better time or place to take care of one last piece of unfinished business.

The Lady Spartans had only one loss, a Christmas tourney setback to Rolling Meadows, when they advanced to their first IHSA State Championship contest since 2001-02. The opponent waiting in the Class 4A State title game at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena was Rolling Meadows.

Facing a one-point deficit in the waning seconds of the contest, Marian got three shots at the basket.

Sophomore Kauai Bradley made the third time the charm, as she banked in an eight-footer as time expired to give Marian Catholic a 48-47 title-game victory.

“The team did a great job representing Marian Catholic and the girls basketball program,” assessed Marian Head Coach Annie Byrne, who has led her squad to six Elite 8 IHSA appearances in eight seasons.

“They played a tough schedule against highcaliber competition and were successful and consistent.

They did not dodge any team in the state and were up for all the challenges they had. They learned time management to balance academics and athletics. They grew together and are a very talented, classy, and competitive group of young ladies,” Bryne said.

The team title gave Marian its Ashton Millender ’14, Megan Walsh ’13, third in school history, adding and Kauai Bradley ’15 to 1993 Football (Class 4A) and 2013 Baseball (Class 3A).

A heart-stopping 54-52 sectional final victory over ESCC rival Marist paved the way to the crown, as junior Ashton Millender banked in a 35-footer at the final horn to rescue Marian from a one-point deficit. Millender’s outstanding season earned her first Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-State honors, an honor shared by Spartan sophomore Teniya Page.

In a winter sports season that included a second in State in IHSA Diving and the best men’s basketball campaign in school history, the year was capped off by the women’s basketball brilliant 33-1 record that also included a perfect East Suburban Catholic Conference season.

DIVING Success didn’t end on the hardcourt for Marian, as sophomore diver Joey Cifelli posted some record-breaking scores in qualifying for the IHSA State meet, then scored 443.60 to earn second place in state. The feat added to his 10th place finish freshman year.

MARIAN CATHOLIC SPEECH TEAM FINISHES THIRD AT IHSA STATE FINALS Tiffany Pia Lyander ’13 Crowned State Champion in Poetry Reading The Marian Catholic Speech Team, led by Director Mark Donaway, finished in third place at the IHSA State Finals in Peoria on February 16. Senior Tiffany Pia Lyander won first place in Poetry Reading.

“I was pretty shocked when I heard my name announced,” admitted Lyander. “This year, the entire team really Tiffany Pia Lyander ’13 Crowned came together as a unit to help one another. The third-place win took every member of our team.”

State Champion in Poetry Reading After a successful season, winning first place at both the IHSA Regional Tournament and IHSA Sectional Tournament, the Marian Catholic Speech Team was proud to earn a third-place trophy at the State Competition.

ELLEN CHMURA ’14 FINDS HER PASSION IN THE MUSIC ROOM Ellen Chmura, a junior at Marian Catholic, has taken every opportunity to enhance her music skills. The Lansing, IL resident was accepted by Music for All, Inc., an organization that creates life-changing experiences through music, to march in the Rose Bowl Parade in January where she was able to interact with peers and band directors from around the country. Ellen also earned a Division One distinction and Best in Room for French Horn and Violin at the IHSA Solo and Ensemble competition last month.

“Ellen is one of the finest musicians we have had in our program,” said Greg Bimm, Marian Catholic Band Director.

“She is dedicated, organized, very consistent, and has a great work ethic. It is the combination of talent and consistent practice that has made her such an outstanding performer. Along with being a wonderful performer, Ellen is also a very dedicated band member and a strong leader.

She is definitely one of our go-to people.”

The MCHS Men’s Basketball team shattered several records on its way to the school’s first IHSA Elite Eight appearance. Marian concluded the year with a 29-4 overall mark, topping the previous school record for wins at 22.

A pair of first-time championships came at the hands of crosstown rival Bloom Township. The Spartans defeated the Blazing Trojans, 61-58, to win their first-ever Rich South McDipper title. After winning the Marian IHSA Class 4A Regional, Marian again toppled Bloom, 50-46, to win the Thornton Sectional, the first sectional crown in history. The win also gave Coach Mike Taylor his 150th victory at Marian.

Standout junior guard Tyler Ulis sparked much of Marian’s success on the hardcourt. He became Marian’s single-season scoring leader (693 points) and all-time scoring king (1,612 points). Ulis was rewarded with IBCA first team All-State honors, as well as being named Player of the Year by the Illinois Times and SouthtownStar.

ALUMNI CONNECTION The Marian Catholic High School Alumni Association Networking Gathering was held on January 17, at Aurelio’s Pizza in Homewood. At the event, more than 50 alums enjoyed pizza, drinks, and the MCHS Men’s Basketball game on a cable broadcast. The upbeat gathering brought in alums of all ages and allowed attendees to reconnect with their Marian roots.

“The Networking Gathering was a very nice event, it is always exciting to see Marian alumni and talk about how to grow the Association,” said James Murphy ’05, Communication Coordinator for MCHS Alumni Association. “Events like these reinforce the fact that Marian Catholic has shaped me into the person I am today, and for that I will be forever grateful.”

The Alumni Association offers a variety of roles to members. For alumni seeking a more causal role within the Association, networking gatherings are a great fit; however, leadership roles are also available.

Established in 1988, the Marian Catholic Alumni Association continues the mission of advancing and sustaining the Marian Catholic experience for future generations. Every alum is automatically a member of the Alumni Association. CLASS REUNIONS CLASS OF 1963 REVS UP FOR 50th Reunion

BY TIM O’HEA ’63 Our plans for the weekend include a very casual get-together on Friday evening, October 25. It happens to be on a weekend that does not include a home football game at MCHS because we didn’t want to create any distractions that would keep us from eating, drinking, and conversing. It will take place in the corridor outside the “old gym” (how appropriate) which is where we spent all our time after school “back in the day.” The food will be provided by (who else?) Aurelio’s of Homewood. There will be an open bar and tours of the school will be available for those so inclined. Trust me, there is a lot more there now to see.

Saturday festivities begin with Mass at MCHS followed by our reunion dinner at Idlewild Country Club. We plan on a great evening of fun, filled with surprises. There are even rumors that some lucky attendee may drive home in a brand new car. (Editor’s note: You can’t believe everything you hear.) Of course, you would have to be in attendance to win. But, enough... can’t ruin all the surprises.

If any of our classmates are out there reading this, please plan to attend our reunion in October. We had a wonderful four years together, and it would be great to renew friendships and laugh about those innocent times. “50 years!?! Are you kidding me!?!” That was pretty much my reaction when I learned that our high school class of 1963 was going to be celebrating our 50th reunion this year. So I did the math thing - you know: 2013 minus 1963 = 50. Dang! But still, I thought that just wasn’t right. Fifty year reunions are for old people! Then someone reminded me that a few of us have grandchildren in college so we pretty much qualify as old people.

Actually, I am pretty pumped for our upcoming reunion which will be held on Friday, October 25, and Saturday, October 26, 2013.

The primary reason for my enthusiasm is that our reunion committee has been working really hard to make this the best 50th reunion that Marian has ever hosted. Okay, we know there has only been one other - just sayin’. Our first priority has been to try to contact every single classmate to be sure that they know when and where the reunion will be held. We are determined to make this a casual, fun time for old friends to renew acquaintances and to share remembrances of our high school days. We might even find the time to share an adult beverage or two. As of today, we have contacted 130 of our 187 classmates and we intend to keep working until we contact them all.

Another reason that we are so excited about this gathering is because our class has been participating in an “e-mail reunion” for the past five years. We currently have a total of 115 classmates hooked up in this group. Most have shared a “bio” of their lives since graduation. The stories have been incredible. Our classmates have stepped foot in every country in the world, and have shared many different experiences that have made us laugh and cry. We have learned so many things about our classmates that we never believed possible, and some we have thought “That doesn’t surprise me.” This forum has even brought together some who have lived only a few miles from each other without knowing it.

The excitement of the opening weekend of the NCAA March Madness basketball series was palpable at Marian Catholic High School’s eleventh annual Marian Madness NCAA Tournament celebration. Hundreds of supporters of Marian Catholic’s athletic teams, alumni, and friends gathered in the Sister M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. Leadership Center on Saturday, March 23.

Beyond a great time, where food catered by Aurelio’s of Homewood and an open beer and wine bar were part of the package, the successful Marian Madness fundraiser benefited Marian Catholic athletic teams and the Alumni Association, raising more than $32,000.

“My husband, Terry, and I have always enjoyed being involved in Marian Madness,” said Jane Peabody, Alumni Parent, event volunteer, and Marian Madness Committee member. “It is an event that combines all of our priorities: supporting our children’s activities, with the greatest national sporting event of the year, while enjoying good food and drink with friends.

“While Marian has provided our children with an excellent, wellrounded education, the greatest strength of the school and Catholic education is community. We feel in order to fully experience that community we have to participate in it. It was wonderful to see the Leadership Center packed to capacity for hours with Marian colleagues,

friends, and family all who share so many interests, not the least of which are our Marian students and the road to the Final Four! What a great event to combine both, as it is said: ‘A no brainer! ’ We look forward to doing it again next year.”

Danny was born on November 7, 2012, the same day as his Grandpa’s birthday, Pat Dolan ’72. Kevin recently joined McDonald’s Corporation as a Finance Manager. The family resides in Chicago.

Tim Huizenga ’03, earned a place on the United States Marine Band, “The President’s Own,” this February. Tim competed with over 90 horn players from all over the country to earn a spot on the historic band.

For the past 19 years the group has hit the links in Alabama, making their way through the “Robert Trent Jones Trail.” They are currently playing their way through the “Robert Trent Jones Trail” in Alabama. The RTJ trail is a series of 12 state owned golf resorts throughout Alabama.

LIFE IN FILM PRODUCTION ROBERT VELO ’95

STOCK YARD FILMS

A resident of Los Angelos for 18 years, Robert Velo ’95 took time out of his busy schedule during a holiday family visit this past winter to stop by Marian Catholic.

When the alum walked into the new Media Center and Broadcasting Studio, he was stunned. Media classes and film equipment were not offered when Robert was a student.

Robert Velo ’95 tours the Technology/ “The new Media Center, Media Center with Mark Donaway, Studio, and Editing Room are MCHS Speech and Theatre Director. wonderful tools for students to learn how technology and creativity work together,” explains Velo. “I am very proud Marian offers technology courses which include industry standards software. Students will be prepared for real world opportunities.”

While at Marian, Robert longed for a creative outlet. With help from his family, he was provided with film and editing equipment. He and his friends would reenact Saturday Night Live skits, movie scenes, and create original programs; giving him the opportunity to gain experience with production equipment.

“Life is what you make it,” explained Velo. “I made it known to faculty and staff that film production was my interest, and they gave me opportunities to enhance my creative skills on my free time. I filmed and edited videos for the band, alumni gatherings, and the 1993 State Champion Football Team, as well as Calendar Drive ‘commercials’ with John Perkovich.”

Robert went on to study film production at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Lacking a professional network in L.A., it was vital that he excel in his classes so he would be noticed by professors. His hard work paid off, and he was able to land an internship at Disney which led to a job at Spyglass Entertainment.

“I have done it all in L.A.,” said Robert. “I began as an intern and worked my way up, and am now a producer. It was hard to get started in this competitive industry, but Marian Catholic High School gave me the tools to believe in myself and to never stop trying.”

Robert has worked on and is responsible for financing projects such as Lovewrecked, Black Swan, Wake, and The Ides of March. His life motto is, “If you can shape it in your mind, you can find it in your life.” It appears that this alum had turned a high school hobby into a successful career.

Michael Leber ’93 and Kenneth Czechanski ’97 never walked the halls of Marian Catholic together; yet, they still managed to meet through mutual friends when Mike was a freshman at Columbia College in Chicago and Ken was a freshman at Marian. The friendship of the Lansing natives evolved through their shared interest in film production. Their passion for film production would one day lead the two to form a business together, Stock Yard Films.

More than giving the young men an opportunity to connect, Marian Catholic also taught them the importance of discipline, confidence, and faith.

“Marian Catholic will always have a special place in my heart,” said Ken. “I credit Marian for making me the person I am today. When I walk through the doors, I feel like nothing has changed; the family-like environment still lives on within the current students, faculty, and staff.”

Ken also met his wife, Elizabeth McIlvain ’96, at Marian. They have two children, five year old Molly and 22-month old Owen.

“My belief in work ethic and discipline helped me take the chance at starting a company,” said Mike. “I rely on my faith to give me strength to persevere, something that Marian has instilled in me from the beginning.”

After graduating from Marian, Ken followed in Mike’s footsteps by attending Columbia College in Chicago. There, they had an opportunity to hone their technical skills and build a strong support system and network that would later prove to be one of their most valuable assets. Once the young professionals finished college, they gained experience in the real world.

Mike worked for Hollywood writer/director, John Hughes, starting as his writing assistant and moving his way up. Ken took his talent to Los Angeles where he worked in international film distribution. However, the prospect of starting their own business proved too appealing.

Founded in 2004, Stock Yard Films is a Chicago based, all-inclusive film production house that produces commercial, corporate, and creative film projects.

“The benefit of Stock Yard Films being a one-stop-shop is that Ken and I are able to create a more intimate relationship with our clients,” said Mike. “We see the project from start to finish, making the production process easier and cleaner.”

The entrepreneurs predict that Stock Yard Films will expand in the upcoming years as they have a number of projects in development, furthering their dreams.

Sister Joan Flannigan, O.P. November 5, 1928 to March 3, 2013

The Marian Catholic Community grieves the loss of Sister Joan Flannigan, O.P., 84, who died peacefully on March 3. Sister Joan ministered at Marian Catholic High School from 1992-2009 where she served in a variety of roles, including working in the bookstore, teaching English and religion, and providing office assistance. Sister Joan influenced thousands of students and continuously illustrated the spirit of Marian Catholic High School.

For 42 years, Sister Joan taught and/or administered in Catholic parish elementary schools: Little Flower, Springfield; Our Saviour, Jacksonville; St. James, Irwin; St. Thomas, Crystal Lake; St. Peter and Holy Angels, Aurora; Our Lady of Grace, St. Christina; and St. Edward, Chicago; and Sacred Heart in San Diego, CA. In 1992, Sister was assigned to Marian Catholic where she ministered for 17 years. After suffering a stroke in 2009, she returned to the Motherhouse where she served God's people with her prayers.

COLLEGE DAY Young Alums offer keen insights for current students

More than 40 young alums took time out during their winter break to share their insights on life and higher education with Marian Catholic juniors and seniors on College Day, January 9. During an informative session, the students exchanged their views on a wide range of topics including dorm life, class selection, and how well Marian prepared them for their college experience.

Deana Williams ’12, Miami University, OH, explained her take on the day: “I was surprised and impressed with all the questions students asked throughout the day,” she said. “I think we were able to talk about many of the concerns students have when they are thinking about college. Ranging from academic difference compared to high school, to living in the dorms, I think sharing our experiences helped students understand the dynamics of college.”

Stanley Pearson, II ’98 held a personal leadership and motivation forum at Marian Catholic on March 11. The interactive, energetic presentation for students at an all school assembly created a safe environment in which to analyze how they approach personal relationships, day-to-day situations, and their general outlook on life.

“I am glad I had the opportunity to speak with Marian students,” he said. “I personally had a memorable experience as a student at Marian Catholic. I remember being very busy with band and football. The band won Grand Nationals twice while I was at Marian. I had the opportunity to meet many people and create great friendships.”

Stanley began his presentation by explaining his issues with self-identification. In high school and in college, peers labeled Stanley by his appearance.

After soul-searching and reaching a breaking point, he had enough with labeling and was determined to speak out.

Stanley is a professional motivational speaker who specializes in leadership and diversity. His programs present participants with an opportunity to understand one another. College campuses and high schools, military bases, and businesses, have invited Stanley to give presentations.

“Everyday I have a new experience that further shapes my future existence. I am aware that events in the past have shaped my future, so I work towards a better understanding of things that have happened and things that will happen,” explains Pearson. “Acceptance has so much to do with how we handle events in our lives. We deal with accepting ourselves, seeking out acceptance, and being able to accept others.”

Stanley believes that we all have a responsibility to ourselves, and the people around us, to handle situations better each day and grow from them.

“She is expert in relationship building, steeped in the vision of the institution, tireless in bringing people together to accomplish the goal of taking the community to the next level,” McCaughey said. “She has a solid grasp of all aspects of the office operation but her value in engaging the support of major donors is priceless.”

Moffatt looks forward to transitioning her role at Marian Catholic to a successor who will share her passion and continue the Advancement Mission to secure the resources, both human and capital, to help the school realize its mission and vision.

Moffatt’s plans include independent work as a strategist of major gift and capital programs for Catholic education.

Marian Catholic High School says goodbye this month to an alumni parent, longtime Advancement professional and all-around champion for the school. Mary Moffatt, Vice President, Advancement, has resigned her position effective the end of May. Mary Moffatt’s ties to the school are both personal and professional.

She and her husband, Bill, are the parents of three grown children who are Marian Catholic alumni. She has served Marian Catholic in various leadership capacities since 1993, both volunteer and professional.

Reflecting on a career spanning more than 20 years (including a three-year hiatus), Moffatt describes her tenure as an Advancement professional at MCHS as “A great run! Twice.”

A great run indeed. Under her watch, Marian Catholic High School launched two capital campaigns, expanded annual giving programs and revitalized alumni relations and the Alumni Association. In addition to developing and maintaining hundreds of constituent relationships on behalf of the school – a role she describes as “a privilege” – Moffatt facilitated board leadership and partnered with school leaders to spearhead two long-range plans.

In doing so, Moffatt helped generate more than $20 million in major gift revenue to ensure a strong and vibrant school well into the future. Many members of the Marian Catholic family credit the school’s financial stability, beyond the tuition driven operating income, in large part to Moffatt and the board’s stewardship and governance. Her accomplishments include fundraising initiatives that made possible major facility improvements, scholarships and academic program enhancements.

Alumni parent and member of the MCHS Board of Directors, Nancy Rita Kaz, recalls the days before such campus improvements.

Her children attended MCHS in the 1980’s. “You better believe I’ve seen changes,” Kaz remarked. She attributes much of her involvement in recent years to Moffatt’s ability to engage alumni families like hers whose children have moved beyond Marian.

“Mary is very good at that,” Kaz commented. She followed quickly with the statement “Although no one ever really leaves Marian!”

Moffatt is quick to acknowledge the contributions of parent and alumni organizations, the faculty and staff and the Dominican Sisters of Springfield in fulfilling the living mission of Marian Catholic: Teaching Scholars with a Soul. While she helped create and maintain a comprehensive fund development and public relations operation for MCHS Advancement, the staff is an obvious point of pride. In a letter to the board and administration, she expressed confidence in the ability of the advancement team to “continue to serve the school’s Advancement mission without skipping a beat.”

MARIAN FUND Annual Phonathon 2013 The 2013 Marian Catholic Phonathon might be remembered for interruptions by two snow storms and an unexpected school holiday to celebrate the Women’s Basketball State Championship. However, the successful event will go down in history as one that raised more than $55,000 in pledges for the Marian Fund with more “decision” gifts received each day and reaching our goal of $60,000.

Chaired by current parents Kathy and Mike Manno and Dan and Marianne Gregorovic, the Parent Phonathon connected current and past parents. The Technology/Media Center is fundamental to Marian Catholic’s innovative curriculum offering students the skills needed to be successful in present and future educational endeavors as they build the foundation for successful career paths.

Intro to Video Editing is a semester course which introduces students to the basics of video editing. "My education at Marian Catholic in the ’80s was excellent, but I was an average teenager and found myself my senior year in a few detentions and even lost all of my senior privileges,” recalls Anne Marie Korzenko McNew ’83, owner of AMK Design in Virginia. THE EAST SUBURBAN CATHOLIC CONFERENCE INDUCTS THE MARIAN CATHOLIC 1993 STATE CHAMPION FOOTBALL TEAM INTO HALL OF FAME The 1993 Marian Catholic State Champion Football Team was inducted into the East Suburban Catholic Conference (ESCC) Hall of Fame on March 7, 2013, at the Crystal Sky Banquet Hall in McCook, IL. The upbeat, family-like reunion at the ESCC Hall of Fame ceremony proved to the team that no matter how much time passes, they will always have a unique bond.

“We had a great turn-out, about a third of the team attended the ceremony,” said Terence Marable ’94. “I don’t think football talk came up all night. We were too busy catching up with one another.”

This was no surprise to Terence; these football players were not just teammates, they were friends. The tight knit team was very compatible; together they grew as athletes and as people.

“It’s easy to say that these guys are special,” said Brian VanderLuitgaren ’94.

“The relationships that were formed on and off the field still live on today.

Dana Smith ’94 was the best man at my wedding, and I often see some of my former teammates.”

The State Champs were able to fall in line, develop, and work together because they truly cared about one another and wanted to win.

“Dave Mattio ’66 pushed us to our full potential,” said VanderLuitgaren. “He was able to make everyone on the team want that same goal, to win state.” The players understood what it took to be a member of a team. The Champs learned how to be coachable, push themselves mentally, and collaborate with one another.

“The take-away from the 1993 State Championship Football Team is to make a goal, believe that the goal will be achieved, and do everything in your power to make the goal a reality. As freshmen, we knew we were going to win the State Championship because no one had an ego; everyone listened and did what our coaches said. Current student athletes need to believe that it can be done. Hard work, dedication, and visualizing the goal will result in achievement,” said Marable.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS COMMITTEES Unifying the efforts of a governing body with the daily operations of an institution is frequently accomplished through the effective use of committee work. The Board of Directors of Marian Catholic High School has maximized this strategy by including additional committee members who are not Directors.

When the committees meet with school personnel to discuss topics and issues that impact the learning environment, it is the partnership between governance and management that allows a positive outcome to emerge.

Currently, the following persons give their time and talent by serving as non-director members on standing committees of the Board of Directors that meet regularly to effect continuous school improvement: Dr. Karen Briggs and Eileen Gallagher Daw ’78 have joined the Advancement Committee in an effort to help Marian Catholic secure the resources necessary for the school to realize its mission and vision.

Steve Tortorello ’04 offers the perspective of a past student and a current staff member of Marian Catholic as he serves enthusiastically on the Mission Integration Committee.

THE MARIAN CATHOLIC Endowment Golf Classic 2013 OLYMPIA FIELDS COUNTRY CLUB SITE OF ENDOWMENT GOLF CLASSIC September 16, 2013 The 24th Annual Endowment Golf Classic will be held at Olympia Fields Country Club and the interest in the event continues to attract nationwide attention. Metro and distance members of the Marian Catholic Community will be golfing at the renowned and historic golf course on September 16.

With the prestigious North Course and a recently renovated South Course, the event will be a dream come true for golfers on either course.

In addition to golf, the Classic will have an option for tennis players with an opportunity to play on clay courts. The $125 cost for tennis will include snacks, prizes, and the evening dinner.

Reservations will be taken online or over the phone. The EGC Committee has worked to keep the event cost at Olympia Fields an exceptional value at $295 per golfer, the same rate as past years, and will include 18-holes of golf, lunch, course refreshments, dinner, open bar, and golfer participation gifts.

Because of generous offers from two committee members who want to be sure the outing stays affordable for our young alumni, they will gift the cost difference for the first 30 Young Alums who reserve at the special rate of $195. This is the same rate as offered in past years to alumni ten years out of Marian.

MCHS HIGHLIGHTS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 4A IHSA STATE CHAMPIONS On the verge of perfection for most of the season, the Marian Catholic Women’s Basketball team couldn’t pick a better time or place to take care of one last piece of unfinished business.

The Lady Spartans had only one loss, a Christmas tourney setback to Rolling Meadows, when they advanced to their first IHSA State Championship contest since 2001-02. The opponent waiting in the Class 4A State title game at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena was Rolling Meadows.

Facing a one-point deficit in the waning seconds of the contest, Marian got three shots at the basket.

Sophomore Kauai Bradley made the third time the charm, as she banked in an eight-footer as time expired to give Marian Catholic a 48-47 title-game victory.

“The team did a great job representing Marian Catholic and the girls basketball program,” assessed Marian Head Coach Annie Byrne, who has led her squad to six Elite 8 IHSA appearances in eight seasons.

“They played a tough schedule against highcaliber competition and were successful and consistent.

They did not dodge any team in the state and were up for all the challenges they had. They learned time management to balance academics and athletics. They grew together and are a very talented, classy, and competitive group of young ladies,” Bryne said.

The team title gave Marian its Ashton Millender ’14, Megan Walsh ’13, third in school history, adding and Kauai Bradley ’15 to 1993 Football (Class 4A) and 2013 Baseball (Class 3A).

A heart-stopping 54-52 sectional final victory over ESCC rival Marist paved the way to the crown, as junior Ashton Millender banked in a 35-footer at the final horn to rescue Marian from a one-point deficit. Millender’s outstanding season earned her first Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-State honors, an honor shared by Spartan sophomore Teniya Page.

In a winter sports season that included a second in State in IHSA Diving and the best men’s basketball campaign in school history, the year was capped off by the women’s basketball brilliant 33-1 record that also included a perfect East Suburban Catholic Conference season.

DIVING Success didn’t end on the hardcourt for Marian, as sophomore diver Joey Cifelli posted some record-breaking scores in qualifying for the IHSA State meet, then scored 443.60 to earn second place in state. The feat added to his 10th place finish freshman year.

CHEERLEADING & FENCING The Marian cheerleaders earned a 10th-place finish at the ICCA State Championships, and fencing captured the most medals ever (three) at the Great Lakes Championships.

MARIAN CATHOLIC SPEECH TEAM FINISHES THIRD AT IHSA STATE FINALS Tiffany Pia Lyander ’13 Crowned State Champion in Poetry Reading The Marian Catholic Speech Team, led by Director Mark Donaway, finished in third place at the IHSA State Finals in Peoria on February 16. Senior Tiffany Pia Lyander won first place in Poetry Reading.

“I was pretty shocked when I heard my name announced,” admitted Lyander. “This year, the entire team really Tiffany Pia Lyander ’13 Crowned came together as a unit to help one another. The third-place win took every member of our team.”

State Champion in Poetry Reading After a successful season, winning first place at both the IHSA Regional Tournament and IHSA Sectional Tournament, the Marian Catholic Speech Team was proud to earn a third-place trophy at the State Competition.

ELLEN CHMURA ’14 FINDS HER PASSION IN THE MUSIC ROOM Ellen Chmura, a junior at Marian Catholic, has taken every opportunity to enhance her music skills. The Lansing, IL resident was accepted by Music for All, Inc., an organization that creates life-changing experiences through music, to march in the Rose Bowl Parade in January where she was able to interact with peers and band directors from around the country. Ellen also earned a Division One distinction and Best in Room for French Horn and Violin at the IHSA Solo and Ensemble competition last month.

“Ellen is one of the finest musicians we have had in our program,” said Greg Bimm, Marian Catholic Band Director.

“She is dedicated, organized, very consistent, and has a great work ethic. It is the combination of talent and consistent practice that has made her such an outstanding performer. Along with being a wonderful performer, Ellen is also a very dedicated band member and a strong leader.

She is definitely one of our go-to people.”

The MCHS Men’s Basketball team shattered several records on its way to the school’s first IHSA Elite Eight appearance. Marian concluded the year with a 29-4 overall mark, topping the previous school record for wins at 22.

A pair of first-time championships came at the hands of crosstown rival Bloom Township. The Spartans defeated the Blazing Trojans, 61-58, to win their first-ever Rich South McDipper title. After winning the Marian IHSA Class 4A Regional, Marian again toppled Bloom, 50-46, to win the Thornton Sectional, the first sectional crown in history. The win also gave Coach Mike Taylor his 150th victory at Marian.

Standout junior guard Tyler Ulis sparked much of Marian’s success on the hardcourt. He became Marian’s single-season scoring leader (693 points) and all-time scoring king (1,612 points). Ulis was rewarded with IBCA first team All-State honors, as well as being named Player of the Year by the Illinois Times and SouthtownStar.

ALUMNI CONNECTION The Marian Catholic High School Alumni Association Networking Gathering was held on January 17, at Aurelio’s Pizza in Homewood. At the event, more than 50 alums enjoyed pizza, drinks, and the MCHS Men’s Basketball game on a cable broadcast. The upbeat gathering brought in alums of all ages and allowed attendees to reconnect with their Marian roots.

“The Networking Gathering was a very nice event, it is always exciting to see Marian alumni and talk about how to grow the Association,” said James Murphy ’05, Communication Coordinator for MCHS Alumni Association. “Events like these reinforce the fact that Marian Catholic has shaped me into the person I am today, and for that I will be forever grateful.”

The Alumni Association offers a variety of roles to members. For alumni seeking a more causal role within the Association, networking gatherings are a great fit; however, leadership roles are also available.

Established in 1988, the Marian Catholic Alumni Association continues the mission of advancing and sustaining the Marian Catholic experience for future generations. Every alum is automatically a member of the Alumni Association. The Alumni Association builds friendships by providing a national network for all alumni through publications, programs, and events, serving as a liaison to the greater school community.

CLASS REUNIONS CLASS OF 1963 REVS UP FOR 50th Reunion

BY TIM O’HEA ’63 Our plans for the weekend include a very casual get-together on Friday evening, October 25. It happens to be on a weekend that does not include a home football game at MCHS because we didn’t want to create any distractions that would keep us from eating, drinking, and conversing. It will take place in the corridor outside the “old gym” (how appropriate) which is where we spent all our time after school “back in the day.” The food will be provided by (who else?) Aurelio’s of Homewood. There will be an open bar and tours of the school will be available for those so inclined. Trust me, there is a lot more there now to see.

Saturday festivities begin with Mass at MCHS followed by our reunion dinner at Idlewild Country Club. We plan on a great evening of fun, filled with surprises. There are even rumors that some lucky attendee may drive home in a brand new car. (Editor’s note: You can’t believe everything you hear.) Of course, you would have to be in attendance to win. But, enough... can’t ruin all the surprises.

If any of our classmates are out there reading this, please plan to attend our reunion in October. We had a wonderful four years together, and it would be great to renew friendships and laugh about those innocent times. I know you will not be disappointed and if, for whatever reason, you will not be able to attend but would like to participate in our email reunion, just email me at teohea17@aol.com.

“50 years!?! Are you kidding me!?!” That was pretty much my reaction when I learned that our high school class of 1963 was going to be celebrating our 50th reunion this year. So I did the math thing - you know: 2013 minus 1963 = 50. Dang! But still, I thought that just wasn’t right. Fifty year reunions are for old people! Then someone reminded me that a few of us have grandchildren in college so we pretty much qualify as old people.

Actually, I am pretty pumped for our upcoming reunion which will be held on Friday, October 25, and Saturday, October 26, 2013.

The primary reason for my enthusiasm is that our reunion committee has been working really hard to make this the best 50th reunion that Marian has ever hosted. Okay, we know there has only been one other - just sayin’. Our first priority has been to try to contact every single classmate to be sure that they know when and where the reunion will be held. We are determined to make this a casual, fun time for old friends to renew acquaintances and to share remembrances of our high school days. We might even find the time to share an adult beverage or two. As of today, we have contacted 130 of our 187 classmates and we intend to keep working until we contact them all.

Another reason that we are so excited about this gathering is because our class has been participating in an “e-mail reunion” for the past five years. We currently have a total of 115 classmates hooked up in this group. Most have shared a “bio” of their lives since graduation. The stories have been incredible. Our classmates have stepped foot in every country in the world, and have shared many different experiences that have made us laugh and cry. We have learned so many things about our classmates that we never believed possible, and some we have thought “That doesn’t surprise me.” This forum has even brought together some who have lived only a few miles from each other without knowing it.

Kristin (Lilly) Tortoriello ’99 and her husband, Dr. Paul Tortoriello, welcomed their baby girl, Liliana Marie, born on November 27, 2012. Big brothers Anthony and Christian are excited to have a little sister.

Carol (Yushkevich) Amato ’75 is currently in a marketing career and was promoted to Creative Marketing and Design Manager.

Carol also went back to school to fulfill her longtime passion in the culinary arts and enjoys pastry making as well as cooking for a healthy lifestyle.

Joseph ’00 and Jolene (Karwowski) ’00 Cieniawski welcomed Michael, a healthy baby boy, on December 31, 2011. Earlier in the year, Jolene graduated from Valparaiso University School of Law in May, 2011 and then was admitted to the Illinois Bar.

Annemarie (Goonan) Huyer ’88 is the Finance Manager at Treasury Wine Estates based in Napa Valley, CA. She oversees the Florida, South Carolina, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Latin America markets.

Kevin P. Dolan ’00 and his wife Annie are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Daniel Kevin who was 8 pounds, 12 ounces and 22 inches long! Danny was born on November 7, 2012, the same day as his Grandpa’s birthday, Pat Dolan ’72. Kevin recently joined McDonald’s Corporation as a Finance Manager. The family resides in Chicago.

Toni Chiappini Ruswick ’96 and her husband Aaron are happy to announce the birth of their daughter, Caroline Gabriella. She was born May 6, 2012, and weighed 8 pounds, 1 ounce. She joins her big brothers Jack, five, and Benjamin, four, and big sister Elizabeth, two.

Samantha (Schreiber) Staley ’01 and her husband Ryan welcomed daughter, Danielle Rae on February 4, 2011. She joined proud big brothers Andrew and Colin.

Tim Huizenga ’03, earned a place on the United States Marine Band, “The President’s Own,” this February. Tim competed with over 90 horn players from all over the country to earn a spot on the historic band.

Gia (Fonte) Colunga ’97 has been elected to partnership at Freeborn & Peters LLP, where she focuses her practice on complex commercial disputes and employment litigation. She lives in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago with her husband, Isaac, and daughter Maria, who is one and a half years old.

Celia Mimms ’03 received a Doctor of Dental Surgery DDS in June, 2012 from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry.

Rebecca (Gustafson) Bomgaars ’05 graduated with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree on December 15, 2012, from Southern California University of Health Sciences in Whittier, CA, and was married on February 10, 2013, to Justin Bomgaars. They live in Lakewood, CA. She will work in a sports chiropractic practice in the Los Angeles area.

LIFE IN FILM PRODUCTION ROBERT VELO ’95

STOCK YARD FILMS

A resident of Los Angelos for 18 years, Robert Velo ’95 took time out of his busy schedule during a holiday family visit this past winter to stop by Marian Catholic.

When the alum walked into the new Media Center and Broadcasting Studio, he was stunned. Media classes and film equipment were not offered when Robert was a student.

Robert Velo ’95 tours the Technology/ “The new Media Center, Media Center with Mark Donaway, Studio, and Editing Room are MCHS Speech and Theatre Director. wonderful tools for students to learn how technology and creativity work together,” explains Velo. “I am very proud Marian offers technology courses which include industry standards software. Students will be prepared for real world opportunities.”

While at Marian, Robert longed for a creative outlet. With help from his family, he was provided with film and editing equipment. He and his friends would reenact Saturday Night Live skits, movie scenes, and create original programs; giving him the opportunity to gain experience with production equipment.

“Life is what you make it,” explained Velo. “I made it known to faculty and staff that film production was my interest, and they gave me opportunities to enhance my creative skills on my free time. I filmed and edited videos for the band, alumni gatherings, and the 1993 State Champion Football Team, as well as Calendar Drive ‘commercials’ with John Perkovich.”

Robert went on to study film production at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Lacking a professional network in L.A., it was vital that he excel in his classes so he would be noticed by professors. His hard work paid off, and he was able to land an internship at Disney which led to a job at Spyglass Entertainment.

“I have done it all in L.A.,” said Robert. “I began as an intern and worked my way up, and am now a producer. It was hard to get started in this competitive industry, but Marian Catholic High School gave me the tools to believe in myself and to never stop trying.”

Robert has worked on and is responsible for financing projects such as Lovewrecked, Black Swan, Wake, and The Ides of March. His life motto is, “If you can shape it in your mind, you can find it in your life.” It appears that this alum had turned a high school hobby into a successful career.

Michael Leber ’93 and Kenneth Czechanski ’97 never walked the halls of Marian Catholic together; yet, they still managed to meet through mutual friends when Mike was a freshman at Columbia College in Chicago and Ken was a freshman at Marian. The friendship of the Lansing natives evolved through their shared interest in film production. Their passion for film production would one day lead the two to form a business together, Stock Yard Films.

More than giving the young men an opportunity to connect, Marian Catholic also taught them the importance of discipline, confidence, and faith.

“Marian Catholic will always have a special place in my heart,” said Ken. “I credit Marian for making me the person I am today. When I walk through the doors, I feel like nothing has changed; the family-like environment still lives on within the current students, faculty, and staff.”

Ken also met his wife, Elizabeth McIlvain ’96, at Marian. They have two children, five year old Molly and 22-month old Owen.

“My belief in work ethic and discipline helped me take the chance at starting a company,” said Mike. “I rely on my faith to give me strength to persevere, something that Marian has instilled in me from the beginning.”

After graduating from Marian, Ken followed in Mike’s footsteps by attending Columbia College in Chicago. There, they had an opportunity to hone their technical skills and build a strong support system and network that would later prove to be one of their most valuable assets. Once the young professionals finished college, they gained experience in the real world.

Mike worked for Hollywood writer/director, John Hughes, starting as his writing assistant and moving his way up. Ken took his talent to Los Angeles where he worked in international film distribution. However, the prospect of starting their own business proved too appealing.

Founded in 2004, Stock Yard Films is a Chicago based, all-inclusive film production house that produces commercial, corporate, and creative film projects.

“The benefit of Stock Yard Films being a one-stop-shop is that Ken and I are able to create a more intimate relationship with our clients,” said Mike. “We see the project from start to finish, making the production process easier and cleaner.”

The entrepreneurs predict that Stock Yard Films will expand in the upcoming years as they have a number of projects in development, furthering their dreams.

Sister Joan Flannigan, O.P. November 5, 1928 to March 3, 2013

The Marian Catholic Community grieves the loss of Sister Joan Flannigan, O.P., 84, who died peacefully on March 3. Sister Joan ministered at Marian Catholic High School from 1992-2009 where she served in a variety of roles, including working in the bookstore, teaching English and religion, and providing office assistance. Sister Joan influenced thousands of students and continuously illustrated the spirit of Marian Catholic High School.

For 42 years, Sister Joan taught and/or administered in Catholic parish elementary schools: Little Flower, Springfield; Our Saviour, Jacksonville; St. James, Irwin; St. Thomas, Crystal Lake; St. Peter and Holy Angels, Aurora; Our Lady of Grace, St. Christina; and St. Edward, Chicago; and Sacred Heart in San Diego, CA. In 1992, Sister was assigned to Marian Catholic where she ministered for 17 years. After suffering a stroke in 2009, she returned to the Motherhouse where she served God's people with her prayers.
