Ulis ’14 Assists University of Kentucky in a Perfect Regular Season The University of Kentucky has a well-known history of success when it comes to basketball. A long list of names that represent Kentucky now play professionally in the NBA, and the Wildcats bolster a number of legendary coaches that have guided them to eight National Championships. This year has proven to be historic for the Wildcats, finishing the regular season with a mark of 31-0 and being crowned champions of the SEC. This task of going undefeated in a regular season has never before been accomplished by a Kentucky Basketball program. Aiding in the success of this remarkable season has been first-year point guard and 2014 Marian Catholic graduate, Tyler Ulis. Averaging 24 minutes per contest, Tyler has made an immediate impact with his court awareness and astonishing skills.

I’ve been trying to prove myself all my life,” states Ulis. “It’s always been there. I’m usually the smallest guy on my team so I’m always the point guard. But I’ve always thought I can do this.”

Tyler has shown his leadership by leading the Wildcats in assists with nearly four per game and also contributing roughly five points and a steal per game. He has shown those around the country that he can play the game with the best of them. Through his consistent grind, daily competiveness, and drive to improve every time he

steps on the court, Ulis has demonstrated the type of player he is and the progress he will continue to make. While at Marian Catholic, Tyler guided his team to over 85 wins, won consecutive Sectional Championships, participated as a McDonald’s All-American, and broke records for most points (2,335) and assists (578) throughout the history of Marian Catholic Men’s Basketball. “I was under the radar for a while, but my junior summer is when I really got recognized,” said Ulis. Tyler and the Wildcats look to finish off their season in a celebratory fashion as they enter the NCAA tournament as the number one overall seed.

Preparing for a time when there might not be a Springfield Dominican in the higher levels of school management, the Leadership Team of the Dominicans Sisters of Springfield asked the President of each of its sponsored institutions to work with the Congregation to establish a Board of Directors that would replace the former Advisory Board. The transitional time began in 2009 and was completed in 2011 when the By-laws of a bi-cameral model of governance were approved. The Member Board, pictured at left, retains the powers of the election and re-election of Directors, appointment of the President, and approval of major legal transactions. At the recent Collaboration Meeting, held on January 13, 2015, Sister Rebecca Ann Gemma, O.P. spoke of the spirit of shared leadership that exists between the Member Board and the Board of Directors. The Educational Mission of the Dominican Sisters at Marian Catholic is firmly grounded in Gospel values and enlivened with Catholic social teachings. This collaborative approach to leadership will strengthen the efforts of both governance and management.

Christine Kowalsky Murphy ’70

Mike Murphy ’70 has plenty of fond memories of Marian Catholic High School – it is, after all, the place he met his late wife Christine Kowalsky Murphy ’70. But one of the most vivid is the Blizzard of ’67, when he and a “couple hundred” other students, along with teachers and staff, were snowed in and forced to spend several nights at the school, “girls in the library and boys in the gym.” “It was an adventure,” says Murphy, who spent two nights at Marian, stayed two nights with a friend who lived near the school, and on the fifth day trekked home to Park Forest. “I walked down Western Avenue and Route 30, and on both I was walking down the middle of the road because there was no traffic.” It is memories such as these that spurred Murphy to create an endowed scholarship in his wife’s name when after a long battle she succumbed to multiple sclerosis in December, 2011. The Christine Murphy’70 Memorial Scholarship is designed to assist a student who is affected by long-term illness or disability. “It could be the student or the family’s breadwinner,” Murphy says. “It could be MS or cancer or a number of different illnesses that can influence a family’s ability to allow their student to continue to go to or be able to go to Marian.” The 2014-2015 school year was the first time the scholarship was presented, to a student who also suffers from multiple sclerosis. Murphy, who met the student and her family and answered questions they had regarding the disease, says it was rewarding to see the scholarship was able to provide such a positive impact.

“ EVERYTHING MARIAN DOES AS A SCHOOL, THEY DO WITH AN EYE TOWARD MAKING A CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIETY, AND I THINK THAT’S VERY IMPORTANT,” HE NOTES. “AS A RESULT, THERE IS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF RESPECT, AND A WAY PEOPLE APPROACH LIVING THEIR LIVES THAT COMES FROM MARIAN THAT ISN’T A PART OF THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM BUT IS EQUALLY IMPORTANT.” Thus it “was a given,” he says, that his daughter Jenny ’00 would attend MCHS. “Marian was an important part of my life at a time in life when we are all going through changes and trying to establish who we are and morphing into adults. It had a very positive influence on me, on my wife and on my daughter, so it’s something that I think should be supported.”

“ I HAVE FIRST-HAND KNOWLEDGE OF HOW DIFFICULT AN ILLNESS LIKE THAT CAN BE FOR A FAMILY AND WHAT IT CAN MEAN,” HE SAYS. “SO I JUST WANTED TO BE ABLE TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR FAMILIES THAT WERE FACED WITH THE SAME KIND OF CHALLENGE TO BE ABLE TO KEEP THEIR STUDENT AT MARIAN.”

A look back at Christine Kowalsky Murphy while attending Marian Catholic, where she met her husband Michael Murphy ’70.

“The school meant a lot to Chrissy and me,” emphasizes the former IBM executive. The couple started dating as juniors, and married shortly after both graduated from college, he from Knox, she from Northern Illinois University. “So establishing something in her name that supports the school and enables people who face some of the same challenges she faced is a very fitting memorial for her.”

Murphy, a resident of Crete, encourages others who may want to honor their loved ones to not be dissuaded by the misconception that “you need to be a millionaire to give back.” “I don’t have a huge bank account. I’m retired,” Murphy says. “I was lucky that the company I worked for has a matching grants program, so I was able to leverage that. The development office at Marian is very willing to work with individuals on a wide variety of things they can do as memorials. They will explore with you, given your means, what would be an appropriate way for you to support the school.”

Murphy’s dedication to the school is exemplified by his long history of service: He helped create the alumni association, served as Advisory Board Chair and as a member from 1999 to 2005, was a member of the Advancement Committee and chaired the Tech Committee. In addition to Marian’s “outstanding academic framework and faith-based approach,” the school’s commitment to service is extremely meaningful to Murphy.

PHONATHON The 2015 Marian Catholic Phonathon was a huge success, reaching out to our alumni, parents, and alumni parents. While we reached many with pledges of more than $37,000, donations continue to be received from individuals and families we did not contact. We have confidence in reaching our goal of raising $60,000. The money raised is used to help bridge the gap between tuition and operating expenses.

LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE

Over seven sessions, volunteers reached out to 12,000 members of the Marian Catholic community throughout the United States. With each pledge, bells rang out and fun filled the library. The event was chaired by current parents Walter and Connie Lolli, and Chuck and Cherie Taylor, who cheered on both the student and parent volunteers. The event could not be possible without the more than 100 adult volunteers and 80 student volunteers who often worked multiple sessions making calls or processing thousands of pieces of paper. Those we were unable to reach, and those not available when our phonathoners called, still have an opportunity to participate. Your gift is fully tax deductible, and can be charged to your credit card. Online pledges/gifts are also an option: www.marianchs.com. Thank you for your continued generosity and commitment to excellence, helping to enable Marian Catholic High School to continue to teach Scholars with a Soul.

PLEASE NOTE: The intentions of those who asked for prayers during the Phonathon will be remembered at Mass on Tuesday, May 12 at 7:05 a.m. in the Student Chapel and will be celebrated by our Chaplain, Fr. Bill O’Mara.

COLLEGE DAY The Marian Catholic Alumni Association, along with the Marian Catholic Guidance Department, presented their annual College Day on Friday, January 9, 2015. More than 40 young alumni returned to the halls of Marian Catholic during their college winter break to speak with the junior and senior classes about their college experience. The young alums, who had a little extra time before heading back to school, came from colleges and universities across the entire Midwest and even some further destinations. The University of Notre Dame, Loyola University, Indiana University and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign were just a handful of the local schools that were represented by recent Marian Catholic alums. Harvard University, Texas Christian University, and the University of Missouri campus insiders were represented by recent Marian graduates. “Coming back to Marian makes me feel at home,” said Sophia Sesto ’14, Texas Christian University. “This is where I was taught so much, it was Marian Catholic that prepared me for what I currently encounter on a daily basis.”

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Hosts Gathering Marian Catholic was delighted to welcome more than 40 alumni and friends who joined the Alumni Gathering held on January 17 at Aurelio’s in LaGrange. The event was hosted by the Marian Catholic Alumni Association and offered a time to reminisce with former classmates and friends. It was great to see so many friends sharing their passion for Marian Catholic and reconnecting with each other during the evening. Future alumni events will continue to strengthen the sense of community that was evident at Aurelio’s. The Alumni Association offers a variety of opportunities to members. For alumni seeking a more casual role within the Association, networking gatherings are a great fit. Established in 1988, the Marian Catholic Alumni Association continues the mission of advancing and sustaining the Marian Catholic experience for future generations.

MCHS ATHLETICS Diving

Joey Cifelli, Olympic hopeful

Adding to Marian Catholic’s record of 15 IHSA Athletic State Championships, senior diver Joey Cifelli gave a spectacular performance on February 28 at New Trier High School. In winning his second straight IHSA Diving title, the Purdue-bound standout became the third Spartan to win multiple State titles, preceded by Casey Taylor in track’s triple jump in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and by Erick Gavin in track’s 110-meter hurdles in 2009 and 2010). Cifelli coasted to his second title by more than 75 points at the state finals. The Olympic hopeful also set a new State record with 555.40 points at New Trier, breaking the State final record that had stood since 1976. His record-breaking score in qualifying for State at Lincoln-Way East Sectional was a staggering 603.35.

Champagne, who was also the East Suburban Catholic Conference Wrestler of the Meet in winning his weight class, concluded the year with a 36-1 mark. His freshman brother, Carlos Champagne, earned State honors with a fifth-place finish at 126 pounds. Other Spartans making the grade at the State level included 120-pound sophomore Josh Jones and 170-pound junior Addison Klausner. Jones, Norfleet, and both Champagnes won ESCC titles in leading Marian to a fourth-place team finish.

Women’s Basketball 10-0 for a third straight perfect league season The East Suburban Catholic Conference proved to be the best of the best in Girls Basketball this year with two State champions crowned from the league (Benet in 4A and Bishop McNamara in 2A). Meanwhile, Marian Catholic proved to be the class of the league in going 10-0 to win the ESCC and accomplishing a third straight perfect league season. “It was a fantastic season for our program,” second-year coach Dan Murray assessed. “With an overall record of 28-3 and to be undefeated in the ESCC again was a wonderful accomplishment considering our schedule is full of top 20 programs all season long.” Behind Murray’s leadership and a senior class of Amanda Blocker, Kauai Bradley (University of Pittsburgh-bound), Jerell Matthews (Stony Brook University),

Aysia McCondichie (University of St. Francis) and ESCC MVP Teniya Page (Penn State University), Marian completed the best three-year record run (89-9) in school history. Bradley and Page were also McDonald’s All-American nominees. “As for the seniors, it will be a difficult group to say good bye to,” said Murray, who was named ESCC Coach of the Year for a second straight campaign. “Their long list of accomplishments, including a 2013 state title and 2014 IHSA third-place finish, will be forever in the record books.

Their work ethic, dedication, and commitment to excellence should be applauded and be a goal for the younger players to strive for.” With a 31-game winning streak in the ESCC to protect, Murray has the program headed in the right direction. “The overall numbers in our program were up and we were able to field a B team at the freshman level again,” Murray explained. “Although both the freshman and sophomore teams were near the .500 level, many players saw valuable minutes that will aid in their continued development.”

Spartans Alumni Basketball Game On Saturday, January 24, 2015, nearly 25 alumni basketball players laced up their sneakers one more time for the first Alumni Basketball Game, slated to become an annual event. The afternoon consisted of a pre-game warm up, a two-man skills competition, and the main event. After the contest, former teammates and friends gathered in the Sr. M. Paul McCaughey Leadership Center for food and refreshments. The gathering involved alums ranging from the Class of 1978 through the Class of 2009. The two-man skills competition saw Joe Barker ’08 and Grayson Mitchell ’09 come away as champions, while the black-color shirts took home the team trophy.

After coming through a rigorous Sectional and having only three entries in the State Finals, The Spartans knew what needed to be done to get their team near the top of the standings. “I was really lucky to have outstanding coaches and supportive teammates. I always let my personality shine through and had fun doing it,” stated Billheimer.

THE GRADY FAMILY

A Solid Foundation at Marian Catholic Family means a great many things to the nine members of the Grady clan of Chicago Heights. For the Gradys, family extends beyond the nine siblings who attended Marian Catholic High School and encompasses the community that impacted them and the friends they have held on to since they walked the school’s halls. Headed by the late Joseph and Neva Grady, the children Geri (Grady) Kelly ’70, Colleen (Grady) Russell ’71, TJ Grady ’74, Patrick Grady ’75 (deceased), Maureen (Grady) Perovich ’77, Kathleen (Grady) Crowe ’78, Janet (Grady) Lexsa ’79 (deceased), Pidge Grady ’80, and Meg (Grady) Finchum ’82, were exposed to a Catholic education at a young age, beginning with their schooling at St. Kieran Catholic School in Chicago Heights. The Grady family realized the sacrifices their parents made to send all of them to Catholic schools. It was this sacrifice that Geri said gave them “respect for education” and led their paths at Marian and beyond. While at Marian, the siblings were involved in a wide variety of activities; Pidge played on the first women’s softball team, Patrick ran track and played football, and TJ played guitar at the talent show. However, the activity that brought them all together was service. Having seen their

parents volunteer within the community, the Grady children began their community service work while at Marian, at such places like SPEED, the special education co-op, and the Oak Forest Hospital. They often did this work together, laughing about the good times they had helping the community and strengthening their sibling bonds. While the spirit of volunteering and community was alive in the Grady family, they also remembered the academic lessons that helped shaped their professional lives. TJ mentioned Mr. Leo Cleary, his geography teacher, as one of his favorite teachers and this sentiment was echoed by Maureen who fondly remembered him as the person who “taught us how to read a newspaper.” Colleen looked back at Mrs. Waller and her home economics class, where she learned how to make chicken à la king, which has made a starring appearance at every Easter meal. In conjunction with their many memories, and all the other lessons taught at Marian Catholic, the Grady family was led to many different career paths. Geri worked as a teacher, and later principal for the Echo Joint Co-op. Colleen, Pidge, and Meg all went on to CNA, where Colleen was Assistant Vice President, Pidge is an operational analyst in the claim department, and Meg is an executive assistant in the

11

claim department. TJ was a Tinley Park police officer, but retired and now sits on the city board. Maureen is an assistant professor of nursing at Prairie State and Kathy is an occupational therapist assistant. Patrick was the Vice President of Treasury for Western National, which was acquired by AIG and Janet was a convenience store clerk. These nine diverse, successful lives were all started with the foundation of Marian Catholic High School. The family tradition has followed in other generations, with Geri’s kids Katherine Kelly ’99, Timothy Kelly ’04, Dennis Kelly ’08, and Brian Kelly ’11 and with Meg’s child Shelly (Finchum) Hunt ’05. This is just another part of the Dominican Pillar of Community that is seen throughout the Grady family. Their strong connections with those around them, and the service they give to others shows how truly special the Grady siblings are and how Marian Catholic has impacted their lives.

Mrs. Barbara Murzyn and Coach Mike Taylor have introduced the Marian Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC). The club is designed for students to experience the outdoors, plan trips, and relish nature. Students will be challenged with exciting outdoor activities that help them grow and develop leadership skills. The participants will develop friendships across the student body as the OAC is open to all four classes at Marian. The club is in the process of planning day trips as well as overnight trips to many new and exciting places. Future activities include hiking, biking, camping, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, zip-lining, tubing, white water rafting, climbing and caving. Overnight trips on the horizon include the Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountain National Park, Smokey Mountains, Yellowstone, Isle Royal, the Boundary Waters, and the Appalachian Trail. The moderators of this club would like to form a similar group for faculty and alumni in the near future.

Schedules of activities, information, and pictures can be found on the Outdoor Adventure Club link under “Clubs and Organizations” in the student section of the Marian website.

As we began a new school year, we encountered many changes. One large change was the transformation of the annual all school fundraiser. As John Perkovich retired, so did the Calendar Drive. In its place, Marian Catholic High School unveiled the Spartan Gold Raffle. We thank John for his relentless efforts during his tenure as “the captain.” John was instrumental in the success of this fundraiser and spent countless hours making sure everything was properly organized, so a big THANK YOU to John. True to form, the Marian Catholic community embraced the new endeavor, and the Spartan Gold Raffle quickly became a success. Goals were set for each student to sell 8 tickets at $20 per ticket. Through the remarkable efforts of students, faculty and online sales, the results exceed expectations. On average, students sold over ten

tickets each and the average net proceeds per student doubled over last year. Winners of the Raffle were drawn at the annual Parents Night Out. First place received $15,000, second $5,000, and third $2,500. The student selling the winning ticket received one semester of free tuition. Because students exceeded the goals, they received an all school holiday. The success was a team effort of faculty, staff, students, parents and alumni which signified the beginning of a new era in a grand (fifteen to be exact) way.

Spartans Raise Money to Assist in Cancer Support

Marian Catholic Sophomore, Kyndal Fletcher ’17, on behalf of the Marian Catholic Community, presents a $5,000 check to Dodi Wians and Mark Matthews of the Homewood American Cancer Support Center.

The Marian Catholic High School Community worked together to assist the Cancer Support Center, in Homewood. The Spartans raised $5,000 through a number of different school organized events and activities. Many male students participated in “No-Shave November,” in which students were permitted to avoid the clean-shaven rule during November for a $40 donation to the Cancer Support Center. Students also took part in the purchasing of pink t-shirts that supported Breast Cancer Awareness. Altogether, Marian Catholic sold nearly 400 pink breast cancer and “Movember” t-shirts to aid a great cause. Cancer Awareness information was provided to the student body during October and November. Marian Catholic representative, Kyndal Fletcher ’17 presented the $5,000 donation to members of the American Caner Support Center in Homewood at halftime of the men’s basketball contest on Friday, February 13, 2015.

Advancement Office Internship Opportunity

ONLINE eDIRECTORY The Marian Catholic Alumni Association is offering a free, private e-directory for our alumni, staff and friends. The directory will list and categorize services and products offered by alumni and help connect those who have a need with those who have the ability to help. It is simply a way to encourage our alumni to use and support each other. Our new eDirectory has three sections: 1. Employment listing - If you are in between careers, browse for job openings and create a profile with your work history. If your company is looking to hire, create a listing to let other alumni know what you are looking for. 2. Non-professional listing - Alumni can offer their services and products. There is a category for members to volunteer their skills and abilities and a category for members to list immediate needs. There is also a place to list items you have to donate, lend or sell. 3. Professional listing - Instead of turning to another referral source, find a trusted professional from our group. Create a business profile which includes your name, contact information, headshot or logo, web address and a brief bio. When a profile is created, it will be sent to the Advancement Department to be approved before it is published. This will ensure that only those invited to join will have access and that all listings are appropriate. You will receive an email when your listing has been approved. Connecting with people we trust is important. CONNECT WITH OTHER ALUMNI TODAY!

http://www.iqonnect.net/directory/marian-catholic-high-school/ The profiles in this eDirectory are made by alumni of Marian Catholic High School who may own businesses or provide various services. A link to the eDirectory is included as a convenience. Marian Catholic High School and its Board of Directors have not screened these business providers and neither approve nor disapprove of the services, products or transactions they propose. Marian Catholic High School, any entity associated with Marian Catholic High School, the officers, directors, staff or members have not recommended or endorsed any of the services or products offered and as such are not responsible for any consequences relative to the transactions and agreements they may generate.

This past summer Marian Catholic High School started an unpaid internship program in the Advancement Department. “We thought this would be an excellent opportunity to give recent Marian Catholic graduates the ability to acquire some crucial experience and build a resume while assisting us,” said Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Vince Krydynski ’81. Two were ultimately selected from a pool of applicants. When offered the position, Emily Longo ’11 and Lisa Belzeski ’10 both jumped at the chance to intern with the Advancement Department. “I really enjoyed being back on campus. One of the reasons I was excited to start this internship was I knew I would be comfortable returning to Marian Catholic,” stated Belzeski ’12. “This internship allowed me to gain valuable real-world experience that I could add to my college education.” The unpaid internship was roughly an 8-10 week program introducing the ins and outs of a number of different responsibilities. Those tasks consisted of Public Relations, Marketing, Institutional Advancement and Alumni Relations. “Overall I really enjoyed my internship experience at Marian. The schedule was sometimes flexible, so I was able to hold another job along with maintaining the internship this summer,” stated Longo ’11. “Everyone at Marian was accommodating and fun to work with.” If you know of any alumni looking for an internship opportunity this summer, please contact Vince Krydynski ’81 at vkrydynski@marianchs.com.
